Great zoo! Animals are close and active. Not too big so you can leisurely walk the whole thing and then go back to your favorite to sit for a long while. They have Adirondack chairs in front of the enclosures so you can settle it and relax. I love this place, have been back many times.

Felt five again with the pointing at the animals and sights. Lol. Worth the nostalgic trip down loving nature and reconnecting without the dangers of an African safari.

We have a season pass to the zoo and have been 2x already. There is a lot to do but make sure you plan for a wait for the indoor animals, train ride etc. It was also a little crowded for my liking the last time we went but they do mandate masks which is helpful with the close proximity. The staff is so nice and their customer service is fantastic!

Great zoo you can do in a day. Clean, organized, free parking, reasonable day pass rates, friendly, kid orientated, lots of disinfection, masks in exhibits, etc. Loved feeding the birds and the giraffes. Petting the sting rays was the kids favorites. Gets a bit congested with all the strollers, so be prepared to bob-and-weave a lot as you explore the park.

Turtle Back Zoo is a very popular place to visit. Our visit on this day was taking a friend who was staying with us for a week. We certainly had a great time looking at the animals, riding the train and the other areas of entertainment, such as the cages where special little creatures, birds, snakes...are kept. There were many visitors, including families and friends all enjoying themselves, moving from one entertainment area to another. And though the temperature was a bit higher than usual, it didn't stop the visitors from making use of the time they were there. The management and staff are courteous, helpful and attentive to the visitors. I lift my cap to them. My friend enjoyed the visit to Turtle Back Zoo immensely and pledged to be back there again!
My kids had fun, the zoo was clean and organized. Please get there early, we struggle to find parking around 1pm on a Saturday. But overall amazing experience.

Now during the pandemic, there is a tent for temperature screening before you are even able to approach the gate. There are signs everywhere to remind people to not touch the glass. They have one way paths for indoor areas. This place is well prepared for the state's current situation. The animals also looked to be in great condition! I enjoyed my time here!

Fantastic! TBZ has been here for many years and never disappoints. Very clean and very professional staff. Animals seem very well cared for. On this summer day all animals were out and about. Water fountains and vending machines are unavailable due to COVID. Great varied exhibits. The park train ride is a great way to cool off and is included in the price of admission. Full COVID protocols are in place with face coverings required and temperature check prior to entry. Great new signage for exhibits as well as COVID reminders. They really thought of everything. Free covered safe parking. Very nice gift shop.
Deff a great zoo if you want a fun day adventure! A train ride! You can feed the giraffes and some of the other farm animals! Most of the animals are able to be seen !

It’s a nice, small zoo that can be completed in one day. The zip lining at the zoo wasn’t open, and the entrance to the zoo has been relocated so I would recommend following the attendants on where they tell you to park. Tickets are affordable -$14 per adult and $12 per child. Tickets were a gift so I’m not sure if military veterans discount is offered. I would recommend ordering tickets online before going to the zoo though. In the evening during holiday season, admission is free for the holiday lights that begin at 5pm. Park closes at 3pm. The kids enjoyed looking at the animals and playing in the grassy areas as these areas are spacious. There’s even a train that takes you around a part of the zoo next to the hiking trail. There’s a petting portion of the zoo where children can touch sting rays. Amazing Asia isn’t complete yet. According to the signs, it will be open spring 2022. The zoo even has a playground for kids to play in. The kids enjoyed feeding the birds but the food sticks do cost $2. I would recommend bringing some cash as some things do require payment like the bird food and the carousel ride. In the evening during the holiday lights, s’mores and hot chocolate are available for sale. Keep in mind, because evening admission is free, the zoo is more congested. If you don’t want to lose your little one in crowds because it is dark and lighting isn’t everywhere, have your child wear something so that they stick out in the dark and in the crowd so you don’t lose them. Overall, I would revisit the zoo for a day trip again.

Loved it here. A little bit of a drive for us but well worth it. Even had the opportunity to feed the giraffes. We'll be back for sure. The big cats were all sleeping, but don't they always?
Saw the Christmas lights experience they had for the holidays. Got to touch a sting ray with my kid and saw a few animals!! The event was free and a nice family outing with my mom and fur grandkid, all in all. Would love to go in the summer when I feel more animals are out and about. Because people seemed more happy to see our Yorkie in her holiday sweater than anything.
This was our first time going to the zoo in the winter. It's true there are fewer animals to see, but there are also far fewer people in attendance and so when you do see the animals that can handle the cold climate, you get to enjoy them for longer with out feeling like you need to step aside to let someone else take a look. This is a great one day or afternoon visit size zoo and continues to be a great way to spend time.

Note: we came to see the lights, but my friend took us close to closing time so we may have missed stuff. Although I lived in NJ, I never heard of the Turtle Back Zoo in East Orange. So glad I did. The Zoo Lights were open to the public. Free parking and admission from 5pm to 9pm. Limited time only. Not sure when it ends, but soon. I had a great time just walking around and seeing the displays, taking pictures, and walking off the pizza. Unfortunately we arrived light. I plan to return to see the animals.
Beautiful small zoo. We spent 5 hours there and loved every minute. Great train ride. Reasonable price $17 for adults. Yay for the senior discount $14 for 62 and up. Beautiful aviary where you can feed the birds. We didn't do the Treetop Adventure but it looks great. Maybe next time.

Beautiful small zoo with varieties of African, Australian, Asian, South American, great plans, our own New Jersey and many animals. You can view some of the wild animals just inches away from the glass. Train ride is a must do not miss and it was free. Touch water animals, enjoy feeding the birdies, giraffe ???? and many more. Ample parking available and they also offer free parking near by… Kids will enjoy, have fun ????
Beautiful zoo! I really enjoyed my Mother's day there. The animal dens and play area were clean and nicely laid out. The giraffes were stunningly Beautiful as were the flamingos. I wish they had elephants and easier access to the bathrooms and dining area. I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of people in attendance due to social distancing guidelines. Overall, an enjoyable place to visit.

Haven't been to TBZ in a while (ya know...pandemic & all ????). I grew up going to this zoo. It's truly a gem in the middle of the 'burbs. The upgrades over the years have been wonderful. So many wonderful additions, animals & esthetically. Mt family and I popped in last night for the lights at night and it was great! We had fun & catching the last train ride was a score!! Gotta do the train ride ???? It's fun for all ages, even in the dark. Looking forward to visiting in the Spring again.

Lots 2 see. Children loved it Make sure u wear comfortable shoes u r going 2 walk alot and bring plenty 2 drink.
Took my daughter here with her Mom and we had a fun time even with the blazing Sun. Key things to remember. 1.) Their strollers are limited in mobility also in carrying additional items. 2.) Bring your own food. Reason for a 1 star lost. Expensive unflavored food that's worse than public school lunches (trust I've eaten those too) nothing they had was even liked by my 1 and a half yr old and she almost eats anything (their food is the apparent exception) bland, dry, lacked flavor. Buy a drink that's re-fillable and keep in mind they close like at 3pm though the Zoo closes later. 3.) KNOW YOUR EXPECTANCIES: This is not discovery channel or the circus so most of the times animals will do what they normaly do and that's rest in shade especially with the sun being hot. I heard a lot of entitled people complaining because they lack the knowledge on what actual animals do complaining about the park as if that was the parks fault. It's natures so give Nature the 1star review not the Zoo for your lack of knowledge and false hyping your kids and being upset at the Zoo because they couldn't pull a miracle for your kids false expectations laid by their parents. Get off your "Karen Horse" Peoples. 4.) You'll probably save a lot of time like we did if you follow rules like no carriages certain places had written very visible yet somehow people missed the few signs then acted upset when they were politely asked to put their carriages in the actual holding den for carriages that we all clearly saw on our way in. Obliviousness or entitlement or both isn't other people's problems who now have to back up bumping people all because of what you as an adult failed to do. (This reflects how you raise your kids btw) #truthhurts You'll also save time if you simply walk the 1-2flights down Vs waiting for an already crowded elevator especially for those who are big boys and girls who can walk meanwhile handicapped or some parents needed the elevator for their actual little kids and especially carriages. I picked up my daughter and went down the two flights of stairs and I live. Those responsible for themselves can surely do the same (I know your names not shirley). 5.) They do have random sprinklers for the heat so set up a gameplan (maps available plus nearly everywhere on location) where you have a direction but also cool yourself off in those special hot days especially the kids. They will dry fast do not deny them the fun and health of cooling off. You'll be the hero/shero later, don't be an uptight douche who took kids to a Zoo yet denies the kids fun because apparently you can't have none or know how to live through others enjoyment. The amount of parents that did that was purely disgusting yet I can't raise your kids so when they grow up miserable and resentful things like this are part of the reason. (You are the problem- [cause & effect). In conclusion: The joy my child had was well worth it when you allow them to have fun under proper guidance because this is a Zoo and can be dangerous yet very enjoyable again once you know what to expect. If you fail to bring your stroller you can rent one but again be mindful the storage and mobility are limited and pack your own food less the drinks since they have unlimited refills until it closes. (Double check the time) They also have snacks but a meal from them is definitely not to be trusted (overpriced yet under size/flavor) and it is hot so keep yourself and kids cooled off especially with the sprinklers to avoid overheating and be mindful what you can barely tolerate is a lot worse for children so be mindful of their indurance not only your own and the family will have a wonderful time where you read and learn while enjoying your experiences as in any place if you plan a head correctly. Better safe than sorry. Live your best inner child especially with your children.
Best zoo for kids. They have so many ways for kids to interact! We had a blast.

Nice experience with young kids. They had a great time. On such a hot day it was awesome to find water sprinklers for the kids to cool down. We saw all the animals, got to feed goats ($.50), feed birds ($2.00 each stick), and touch stingrays. Peacocks roam around freely so it was nice to see it open its feathers. The train ride is free but you don't really see any animals. Well, you may catch a glimpse of the giraffes. The pony ride does have a height restriction. The carousel was not open when we passed by it. Free parking garage also available.

My godson and I went to this zoo a couple days ago for the first time and we both had a great time! The zoo is larger and has more animals than I originally thought. Along with just being able to see all the animals my godson also rode the carousel and train, fed the goats and birds and touch the stingrays and sharks. The bathrooms and the zoo itself were very clean. The price of admission and the additional price to ride the carousel and feed the goats and birds was reasonable in my opinion. We will definitely be returning. P.S. - the peacocks roam free at the zoo so don't be alarmed. Lol.

Fun place for the kids. Wish some of the animal enclosures were bigger. Lady working near the goats was a bit rude. Last time we came was 5 years ago and they have changed many things since. Feeding the stingrays was the weirdest experience! Felt like a slobbery vacuum but pretty cool.
Excellent, 1st class zoo, very clean, very well maintained, modern infrastructure, many new exhibits in top condition, very good proximity to animals—usually from multiple vantage points, great train ride for kids at no additional charge, wonderful walking loop around the zoo with lots of options and turn offs. Delightful water touch tank where adults and kids can pet and feed small sharks and rays. Excellent new giraffe exhibit where guests may meet and feed the giraffes at eye level. Overall, the zoo is very well designed and maintained. It’s evident that the County of Essex has prioritized the funding this wonderful zoo. Deserves more than 5 stars!

Very attractive zoo for family. Very clean and very huge zoo. We didn't even get to see a lot. This was voted as number one zoo in New Jersey and we can see why, there's a lot of good photo p opportunities in the zoo for the kids. They try to maintain social distance signs everywhere. sanitizers I wish there was more of around the zoo. There is also train that goes through the forest since it's part of bigger park and a Lake nearby. Definitely recommend a good day trip with the kids but closes early at 3 o'clock and we didn't know that
Great place to visit and see lots of animals. Giraffes, Lions, Penguins, and more animals. Definitely a place to spend a good 4-6 hours with the family soaking in the sun and enjoying watching your favorite animals roam. They also have a playground area as well for the kiddos to play as well. Some of the attractions are closed (pony ride) but hopefully they open up in the summer. A great zoo to visit, I highly recommend.

Great zoo. Small enough to get it done in a few hours, but big enough to spend a good chunk of a day with the kids. The train ride is short but it's good to sit for 10 minutes or so while catching the view of the lake.
I really enjoyed this zoo, great variety of animals, it’s not too big that after the whole experience of zoo you are dead tired because of walking; and it’s not too small that you feel your money is not worth it. Everything is so close to each other, and many places to sit and rest. Lots of trees for shades, loved it! And free parking garage! One thing, remember to bring cash to feed the animals, or to go to the carousel. Things you need to pay are: 1. feeding animals -giraffe ($3 per feeding with two leaves of lettuce) -bird ($2 per feeding stick) -stain Rays ($3) touching them is free -goats ($0.5 per handful of goat food) 2. Pony ride ($2) 3. Carousel ($2) 4. Train ride (not sure how much, it was closed)

Another great day at the Zoo, even though was a 100 degrees today. Animals were very happy, touch tanks are open and plenty of water showers around to cool off. Perfect day for the zoo, all of the animals were out and about with the cool but sunny day. Cannot wait to go again. Even had the opportunity to watch the lab and cheetah companions.

This is a great little zoo that has a huge heart for its compact size. When you enter the Zoo you are met with the feeling that the staff care about the animals and that the animals enjoyed their life. The big cats had plenty of room to roam and the smaller exhibits had plenty of enrichment to keep their occupants entertained. The primates were our favorite. They were running around playing with each other and taking turns chasing around each other with a. 5 gallon water jug filled with their snacks. The turtle recovery tanks were well maintained and the cameras added a sense of closeness while still allowing the low stress environment necessary for the animals to recover from their ailments. We absolutely loved watching the cheetah and it's Labrador buddy chase each other around and then enjoy a good nap while cuddled up. You can really tell they enjoy each other's company. It was very sweet. Parking was super convenient and free so no argument there. This really is a must visit zoo for anyone capable. I may modify this in the future to award the 5th star but that won't be until I see how the construction finishes and the remaining animals return to their exhibits.
Amazing experience! Must visit for kids , well maintained and clean too. Lots of different varieties of animals for kids to explore and enjoy!

I love zoos and I love love love turtleback zoo! It is not as prices as the bronx zoo but also have a lot to see and explore! We did giraffe feeding and it was a fun experience. You'll see that most of their animals are sociable a good sign that they are happy and healthy!

The zoo is really nice but it was so hot that most of the animals stayed hidden. It was 90' in June, not normal temperature for NJ. Overall was fun for everyone.
It was amazing! We came for vacation and I would definitely recommend coming here as a stop. My daughter had a great time looking at all the wildlife and really enjoyed the train ride and gift shop.

The animals enclosures are always nice and clean. The animals look healthy and well taken care of. Many places to eat outside with your own packed lunch. The restaurant is clean with a rooftop overlooking the zoo. The train ride is really fun (and free) and goes along a beautiful lake. The only thing I will say is..there wasn't enough anti bacterial stations. The soap was empty in the bathroom. With covid, they should be more on top of it. But it was the 1st day of spring and Beautiful out. I'm sure staff was overwhelmed and not prepared for this many people. Overall, i love this zoo and uts fairly priced. I highly recommend

Great local zoo - very family friendly and well kept. Go early when they first open before the crowds show up.
Great place to bring kids, lots of animals to see, pet and even feed the birds. Affordable and if I lived close by definitely worth a membership to go many times in the year. The thing that stops me from making it a5 star experience is that they had closed off the second floor seating at their cafe/restaurant, which is outdoors and covered and they had a full restaurant of patrons eating indoors. I don't like that people act like the pandemic is over, but when businesses aren't taking it seriously when they can and out wouldn't affect their profits, that annoys me. I would love it if the pandemic was over, but with the behavior we are seeing a second round is around the corner and this cycle will continue till people take this seriously. So for an outdoor experience, this is great, just plan to bring your own food.
During the cold months not all of the animals were out. It's a fantastic zoo, though. Very walkable with little kids! Staff are courteous and friendly.

There are also lots of photo ops & a park for small children! If you go into the bird exhibit, make sure to buy the stick of bird seed they have! Feeding the birds is an unforgettable experience!
Great zoo and nice variety of animals. It def is more worth the visit during spring months since some animals were not there, some were hibernating etc, the train is closed and the carousel is closed during the winter months. Still a great experience and certainly was worth the visit.

Fun place to take the little ones. We went for president's day and it was super packed. I think on a regular day it wouldve been more quiet. Some animals weren't there because of the weather (i think?) And also the train wasn't operating. However, it was a pleasant experience. Would come back.
Went 2021 for Christmas lights this time and loved it. Park & Entrance were free. Lots of fun things to do with my kids. We smoked marshmallows $6 in the fire, ride the carousel for $2 and Train $0. So much fun! My #1 to go during summer.

I loved this zoo very much as my kid enjoyed here a lot. Kids do love to see the animals there. The map provided at the entrance was very good and you can follow it to visit the zoo easily. The zoo was clean and there was no bad smell that means it was hygienic as well. The animals over there looks healthy and calm that makes me to believe they were getting food on time and also taken care properly by the staff. I have visited so many zoos but for the first time i was able to find and see snow leapord so it was definitely a great experience. The space provided to animals were big and clean so that they can roam freely and have fun. One of the best section was touch tank where my kid had an experience to touch the fish. At the end we had an experience of toy train, the queue system was good and the queue was moving fast. Total trip time of train was around fifteen to twenty minutes and covered some beautiful scenic views around lake. The zoo is pretty well connected with all eligible modes of transportation. Also the zoo is having o much space to accomodate all cars in parking alongwith reserved parkings. So long story short, get up and plan a quick weekend trip with friends and family. You will not regret. Get the experience. Have fun. Ciao!

The employees really do a good job of keeping kids in line, especially inside the aviary, where budgies could easily be kicked, grabbed, or stepped on by an unsupervised child. That goes to show how much they care. There's also a rich assortment of flowers, grasses, vines, trees, etc. Here are some of the plants that I found most intriguing.
Nice zoo, went on a cold day and it was not too busy. Would visit again, when it's a bit warmer.

It is a great place to go with families on the weekends. You can buy food and feed some the goats. Got some chance to see some cute penguins, giraffes and big cats. This zoo is not as crowded. I had a good time there

Perfect size zoo for seeing everything in an afternoon. Loved it so much. Animals were very lively
It pays to take a trip from anywhere in the Tri-State area to this wonderful Zoo, very well kept area, extremely friendly staff, shaded benches and well cleaned restrooms all over the place, they offer more wild animals than almost any other Zoo in the NY-NJ metropolitan area, and especially the fun fact that most wild animals here you can meet face to face through the glass windows facing the animal habitats, overall its very impressing, the animals, the amusement attractions that they offer as well.

We had such a wonderful time here. We got to see so many animals. It was fun to feed the giraffe ???? and see the butterflies ????. We also loved the petting zoo and the train ride. Enjoyed the sprinklers they had set up at certain spots for a nice little cool off. The Cafe was nice also and good selection of food to pick from. This is definitely a all day event because there is so much to do and see. So I definitely suggest getting there first thing when they open so you can pace your day. Also make sure to have sunscreen the sun will beat you down without even realizing it. Have quarters handy for the petting zoo to feed the animals. Definitely grab a map. The signs are not posted to well around the park so you definitely want a map to help guide you. The restrooms were kept very clean while we were there. This was such a great place for kids to come because there is so much for them to see, do and touch. We had so much fun here today and the staff we encountered were extremely pleasant ????
This zoo is very small. There's not alot of animals there. The price to see animals isn't that expensive. This zoo is good for small kids for a quick visit.
I was a member for 3 years at this zoo. I spent many wonderful days here with the children. My term of membership has expired and I wanted to extend it today. But what I saw here today changed my mind. Half of the zoo was closed and the most interesting things for the kids as well. The train, touch tank, playground and much more are closed. Much dirtier in the park than usual. Even the water in the pool with the sea lions was so dirty that nothing could be seen. Green muddy Friends - You have something to do in the Zoo. I should not have spent my money here.
