Had a great time staying here for over two weeks. Boutique style interior, very clean, comfortable bedding, friendly staff, convenient location, and does a great job branding itself on social media.
But I suspect the hotel is haunted lol. The door of room 201 has been cracking open and closing itself repeatedly since our first night here. At first we thought it was just a weird guest or wind, but no. It happened almost every night during our two week long stay, and it only happened late at night when it's quiet and no one was in the hallway. It was a bit creepy and annoying to be honest, as the noise caused me unable to sleep a few times at night because it was not far from our room and the wall wasn't soundproof enough.
My girlfriend also heard some strange noise when she was alone in the room once. It sounded like someone was outside our room trying to open the door with a key card. She thought it was me at first, but she looked through the peephole and no one was outside. We have watched enough horror films to know better not to open the door (just kidding), so she waited until I actually returned later. She said she didn't find it creepy at the time, just a bit odd.
Saw another Google review by "Alan Drysdale" who said he's pretty sure it's haunted too. Not sure if he was referring to the same thing.
I'm a history lover so I did a little Googling of the hotel's history just for my own curiosity. Turns out it is a 109 years old building that was constructed back in 1912 as the former Hotel Barron. It's been through a number of renovations and changes of management over the years: It first became the Hotel Belmont in 1925, Nelson Place Hotel in the early 1970s, renamed Hotel Dakota in 1997, a Comfort Inn since the 2000s, then the newly renovated Hotel Belmont since 2017. Attached some archival photos of the hotel's forgotten past below. How fascinating!
Disclaimer: It was just a bit creepy about that door, but nothing crazy or horrifying happened. We enjoyed most parts of the hotel and thought it was pretty good for the price. We didn't feel uncomfortable or unsafe in any way, so there's no reason to avoid staying here because of this review. Just thought it was mysteriously interesting and people rarely talk about these things nowadays :)
