No fishing license needed since this is a City of Abilene park. Parks and Wildlife regularly stocks both small lakes with catfish (channel & yellow cat), trout, and bass (small and large mouth).

Beautiful park! Great to bring your kids or pets. Plenty of benches and playgrounds for every age. Two different dog park areas. There is also fields to play sports and in the summer a free water play area. A nice trail to walk, jog, or take a stroller with plenty of different trees to sit under. Plenty of water fowl to see and feed. The sound of the water fountains helps create a soothing atmosphere. Watch for info when to bring your fishing poles. Just a lot of fun for every one.

Wonderful place. It's non expensive and you are able to get close to the animals and experience it up close without having to pay big city price. They have a huge variety of animals. My four year old was able to walk all around just had to keep water in had since it was 100 degrees outside. We also brought enough sunscreen and quarters to feed the fish. The train was fun we did that last so my daughter could catch her breath she LOVED every part of it. We also did the swan paddle boat it was okay for $12 we didn't last the 30 minutes my daughter was freaking out. Maybe when she is older she might enjoy it more.

This is such a lovely park close to two dog parks (one for big dogs and one for small dogs) and the Zoo. It has a playground and splash place. Evening walks or bike rides here can be lovely. Gorgeous sunsets. There are also plenty of places for fishing. One of my favorite places in Abilene. Great for families.

The playground is great for kiddos of various ages: lots of ramps provide easy access for younger ones. A nice walking loop, and the pond is available to fish in, or to feed the ducks.

So. Much. Fun!!!!! It was amazingly fun! So many animals. By the way when you go to the camels, their names are Sahara and Dakota. If you call them by their names when they are not eating they will come and talk to you! (Not literal!) The rhinos name is Macho. Hes pretty cool. When you go to feed the fish, they will go wild and fight. (Not really fight but like they will flop on eachother and go wild!) Its a truly amazing zoo.????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Truly enjoyed the Sunset Safari hosted by the Abilene Zoological Society on Thursday evenings. Decided upon a trip to the zoo for "Date Night" and I have to say that this was a great choice. Abilene is very blessed to have such a wonderful zoo available and it is very overlooked by local residents. While it certainly is not like a trip to the Fort Worth Zoo or even Breckenridge Zoo down in San Antonio we are very fortunate to have such a facility here in our own backyard. We arrived just before the 7 pm handler show (Cat Show) which was educational and a joy to watch as the handler demonstrated how and why they work the cats specific ways. As this was also our first trip since the new giraffe exhibit opened. Twiga Terrace is the name of the new paddock and is one of the best that I have seen and is also much easier to climb by elderly as well as families with strollers. Overall the evening was very pleasant with the temperature being a bit cooler than the middle of the day, thus the animals were a little more active. While there were a number of people in attendance, it was by no means crowded so as to be very easy to get around.

I went here a few years ago and there were more mammals like a tiger and an elephant now there are more birds than anything also the drinks are expensive like 3 dollars for a bottled soda jeez and also many macaws and squirrels were in the exhibits plus the lion is alone give him a friend.

I love the setting of this park, beside a lake and across from the Zoo. There is a lovely path around the park with trees shading some of it. Camp Barkley is a dog park there which is well maintained.

I highly recommend stopping in here if you're passing through. There are great walking trails, nice little lake that I see people fishing in a lot, and huge dog parks that are well kept. I've been walking my dog on the trails every day for the last week and a half and I am continually impressed with the maintenance people taking care of the park. It's really nice, and kept clean! Multiple baseball parks, multiple playground areas.

It's a good park not the best park to play ball at but a good place. It's always fun cause your never know what your going to get or have when you play on this fields. Other than that the park is on the other side of the park and not even close to the main fields in the front.

Kind of small. No elephants, The San Antonio Zone was better. And the Goose ride is down. The Front desk staff were very nice but the ones in the park seem like they didnt want to be there. Lots of other cool stuff there too. Lions,bear and several other animal all hid in there caves due to the heat. Overall i think the habitats need more shade for the animal to hang out outside. The poor giraffe's had no shade at all.

Clean and pretty. Well maintained! Right by the zoo. Love it! Fun to feed the ducks in the pond (but don't feed them bread!). Why not bread?! For starters, bread is essentially just junk food. It fills birds up, but it doesn’t carry much nutritional value. That means pretty much the same thing it means for humans: baby birds are more likely to end up malnourished, without the plant nutrients they need to grow properly. A high-calorie, low-nutrient diet can cause waterfowl to develop a condition known as “angel wing”, an incurable wing deformity that usually renders birds flightless. It’s sad as heck, y’all. And then there’s the fact that the constant availability of human-supplied junk food keeps ducklings from learning how to forage healthy food for themselves. Meanwhile, grown-up birds who gorge on carbs are more likely to get fat and sick. Some safe options include corn (canned, frozen, or fresh), peas (same deal), seeds, oats, and rice (don’t worry, it won’t make their stomachs explode). Grover Nelson Park is located right next to the Abilene zoo which happens to the best location, especially when you have kid's who are not ready to leave, you have something to bribe them with. "Hey kiddos,if you come on we can stop by the Park before going home. It works like a charm getting them through the gift shop and out of the zoo without crying. And the Park is awesome with the fort playground and the ducks.

This beautiful park placed next to the Abilene Zoo is a great place to take the kids after visiting the zoo to wear them down a bit more before heading home. The two main attractions near the zoo are the Splash Pad and split playground that accommodate kids of the pre-school persuasion on one half, and elementary - middle school ages on the other. If you're more of the "Let's take a walk" type there's a path around the lake area that's just perfect for a good stride. Even further in you'll find the pavilion areas with even more playground equipment nestled among some of Abilene's best baseball/softball fields. We have had several birthday parties at the pavilion area and are great for hosting all kids of events.

We enjoyed our visit; from the sites to feeding the giraffes to the train ride. By the way, in my opinion, the train and carousel should be stated as being for children only. It was a little difficult to be comfortable on the train. Only a few seats on the carousel are able to accommodate an adult; with weight being considered.

I have played softball at Nelson's Fields for over 17 years now, and although I do not exactly agree with the positioning of teams. Back when I was on a Rec. 1 team for 5 consecutive years, we dominated. Im sure that the fields' owners are trying their best to make sure that softball season runs smoothly, i was wondering if there was a way to get a better lineup for the teams that play there. I was on Recreation team, and the added up how many points you have earned in the career / points obtained by playing the season games, points depending on how you play the entire season. I am sure that I will be making my team a little more higher quality than alot of the teams, only because i have 18 years of experience in the sport and at Nelson among other places i played at in Tournaments. Somehow and some kind of way, there has to be a better system than the one that has been in affect the past few seasons, at least. Also, no more end of the season tournaments. That's due to the fact that really great teams have lost in the past, only to dominate the lower class divisions. Some of the people love to scream and yell at the moment a mistake is made, but they will yell, screaming and fighting as soon as you mention the mistakes/mistake they have made. But most of them do not understand this is a family game for the most part and everyone is wanting to have fun with the game and make friends. That is the hardest thing to do whenever you have a coach or even a "know it all" teamate. Those kind of teamates desert deserve expulsion from the organization or suspended for half a season but and I wanted Nelson you have to argue with an Umpire to get that type of repraminding. The umpires will Kiki from the game AR beginning and end middle regardless of what it is due to cursing donor glove throwing a bat talking bad to the Empire I'm so talking about the other players if he hears you that's reprimandation right there. But I think it would be a good idea to have Recreational leagues again, i have played for 19 years now. I have been playing with the team that makes you feel like you are worthless and completely a waste of time to this person. These people who look down on everyone because they are "SO MUCH BETTER" that they are not, ill tell you why, one instance is that about 6-7 years ago I was playing for a decent team we were not to great, but on the flip side we weren't too bad either about a half half when ratio but the teams that we played were 10 times greater than we were and I went to an Empire and asked him why we were put in the same Recreation and they said it was a matter of points each individual that plays no matter how long you played your number and name I'm sorry your driver's license number and name and the fact that you have so many points do the how long you play and how well you do depends on which rack you go to or League or division or what not I think they should figure out some kind of way to make it even if we're not one team gets out there and gets demolished not one team cheats and loses the tournament just to be in the same Rec because they dominated first year I mean this is ridiculous it's getting to the point to where they just need to start out with the you know even know the team's you know everybody need to sign up a certain sheet at the beginning of the year beginning of the Season or whatnot and those people need to be split up by the points and have each team equal points not everybody has the same point but it will be close and not everybody's going to know each other and then it solves the problem!! Im not a genius, but I can see that it is the best to make the dominate team destroy all teams in their own division, also that cuts back on the males, stepping up in the batters box and cranking out, and every single time. But, they solbed the problem last season by asking coaches to make a decision about the homerun limits. Also, in Co-ed the guys are stacking up the teams as much as possible. Yes, the solution: make a list of all players b4 season start, then even out the teams!!

Great park to take the kids for many activities. They can go fishing in the pond, or get wet at the splash pad. Although the splash pad could be due for an updated. That's just my opinion though. Pretty great playground for the kiddos to run around on. Pretty decent bike and walk way to run, jog or walk. Pretty well kept park and if all else fails the Zoo is just a walk away.

The park would be so much nicer if the rules were enforced. There are any number of days where people have big dogs over 50lbs in the side for small little dogs for 30 lbs and under. The water at the park has been broken for the last 5-6 months and again because people are not paying attention to the rules. there's poop being left, even though bags are provided.. Barkley Park is meant for the pets a nice place to to run and play... People are the problem, not the park, and definitely not the dogs... PLEASE BE A RESPONSIBLE FUR-BABY'S PARENT AND BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHRS PLEASR

I love taking my dog here except for the area of mud about 40ft from the entrance and the mud around each bench. Come on Abilene, seriously, you can't come up with a little sand to fill it in. we've been asking for months. Update: i guess the thinking was let's make a hole so when it rains the dogs will have a mud puddle to play in except all i hear are complaints. Most people don't want their dogs running and playing in the mud. Please fill it in, at least in the small dog area. If owners want to let their dogs play in the mud they can take them to the large dog area. At least give us a choice.

Attended the United Way fundraiser, Key City Rhythm & Blues Festival, outdoors in the lovely fenced Nelson Festival Park. The Park provides double slab pavilions with water fountains & restrooms; a large Permanent Event Canopy for table/chair functions off slabs; Shade Oaks throughout playground & along west side of fence; spacious lawn area for stage & audience seating, Vendor Area close to Entrance (easy access, setup/power). A well planned festival park! Large Oak trees around the slab pavilions were wrapped in colored twinkle lights - so pretty & fun. Festival Producers provided: electronic checking for online tickets, HEB Food Tent (smoked & BarBQue brisket & sausage) full Cash Bar & Over 21 wrist bands, Funnel Cake truck, Souvenir-Tee Tent & roving Glow-In-Dark sales, Mobile AT&T Charging Station (really upscale), Access to the Creative Playground for kids, Meet & Greet Table offstage for autographs & CD sales (behind speakers for actually talking), Roving Security in Parking, extra Porta-Potties. Even the Sound Booth was far enough from the stage to ensure great mix of sound - in front of stage was too loud for me, but Tower Speakers projected over crowd to the play ground on opposite end of park. Excellent R&B artists - lots of standing ovations following solos. Great Job! I will attend outdoor events here again!

Big park with a (man made) lake. Nice area with play structures and swings, one for bigger kids and other for toddlers. Lots of grass and trees, but not many tables from what I could tell. There's a mixed group of ducks that hang out at the lake, VERY people friendly as they are accustomed to being fed.

Abilene Zoo is great. Family fun at a good price and alot of new attractions like park train, swan boat rentals(4.00 per person for 30 min.) carousel and more. Animals like the white lion, mountain lion and lions exibit are awesome as well as the new giraffe exibit with feeding area is totally fun. Snacks, drinks and theres a water park next door and more.

A great little zoo! Just be sure to visit in the summer when all the animals are out. We went in February and although a great time, we didn't get to see them all. We'll be back when the weather is warmer! Feeding the giraffes is a great experience. $5 for 5 pieces of lettuce. And other opportunities to donate to the care of the animals. They are also building a new exhibit, with the animals of Madagascar. Kids (and adults) will love the reptile house!

Small put nice zoo Easy to get around. Staff helpful and friendly. I did not see anything for handicap people as far as electric vehicles for rental. New displays being built. No bears or tigers currently available to see. You can get up close to the Giraffes and feed them.

Love this park it's always clean well kept my fur balls love the dog park just don't understand why ppl bring big dogs in small dog park . Some smaller dogs are afraid can't enjoy it do to the bigger dogs in wrong park . But other than that there is so much to see to walk around and have space and enjoy a beautiful day in any season . Wish there wasn't a certain time where u couldn't be at the park wish u could be 24hrs

No goat head thorns in the park which is great, but it's basically just a field, with two trees. Not much for the dogs to sniff around. There is a small dog area too. It's big though, and there is a place to walk around outside the park to get some sniffs. Pretty sure I heard a lion near the zoo. That was cool/sad

Really nice park. Three tanks anyone can fish. Big tank stocked w trout every winter. Bass crappie carp catfish bluegill are year round prey. Nice playground . A few pavilions w grills n fireplaces. Alot of soft ball played here. Many fields . The zoo is on the backside of the park. Jogging path.

Great place for a party. Be sure to reserve your pavilion to be sure it is available. We were in pavilion A which was right next to the playground and restrooms.

Probably the best park in Abilene. Feed the ducks, pay on one of the multiple playgrounds.. Go fishing.. Dog park... All sorts of stuff to do.

Zoo is open 9a-5p hours (stop selling tickets at 4pm), good parking, the "park" area is free, some items for sale were pricey, no electricit scooter rental but they do have wheel chairs to rent.

Great park, small pond with ducks across from Abilene zoo. The trail is breaking and needs repair but overall well attended Park with dog poop bag stations around the trails, and the local dog park is located here as well. Nice trees in summer gives nice shade. At evening you can hear animal growls and some stars show through.
