Beautiful art works ranging from medieval to contemporary. I cannot really expand on the different types of art work present in this museum and compare it to others since I haven't been to much so my knowledge may be lacking on basis. However, I can say that I enjoyed visiting this museum and being exposed to the different styles and techniques of art. Bonus: The streets leading up to the museum were really colourful and are very picturesque! (My friends and I went during the month of August) Note: Not sure if this still exist but we left our belongings behind at the counter for bags and jackets (and were given numbers associated with our belongings). We, of course, took anything valuable like cellphones and wallet with us.

Absolutely one of the best art museums in the world! It's spacious and brings the finest artists to you. And there's often a special exposition going on - including some free to the public, like the Moving Dunes in the summer/fall 2018: see picture.

Le Musee des beaux-Arts (Museum of Fine Arts) was a very cool trip and museum to see. If you love going to museums and seeing very interesting and different types of exhibits, this is definitely one not to miss. When I went, they had a very cool Picasso exhibit going on and a contemporary exhibit of black Canadians that was very cool as well. I would return to see what other exhibits they might have on my next trip to Montreal.

One of the best museums I have ever been. Friendly staff, plenty space inside so you can feel you're almost by yourself. Great activity in Montreal. Would suggest to do the permanent and temporary exhibition.

Beautiful permanent exhibit with some very notable works from Rodin, Did, Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Picasso, and more. Wide range of artistic periods from romanticism and baroque to impressionism and cubism. The visiting exhibits are also of consistently high quality. A membership is very good value at the MMBA

It was pretty good. Art is supposed to get a reaction and there were a few things that made me laugh, like the piece of drift wood with a rope tied to it, or the atv with a bunch of arrows in it. Then of course, there was some classic French art and photography, an exhibit on mummies (I never knew there were so many caskets to a mummy), and just some really interesting/not-every-day art. I prefer just regular sorts of art but I enjoyed the visit and would have been remiss not to have gone.

Beautiful art gallery! Visited mid-week, so was pretty empty aside from school trips. A bit difficult to find your way around at first, but ok once you get past the first building (only passage to the other parts is hidden at the back)

The museum was really cool, it's exhibits were interesting and varied. I enjoyed how many of the art work were displayed and there was so much to see! It can be quite confusing to navigate and see the whole space as it spans across a few buildings, so pick up a map at the door and immerse yourself in art for the next few hours!

The art in the museum was beautiful. They had all types of different galleries. I don't know much about art, so I will save you my opinion on anything lol. I can take you they had an exhibit by Thierry Mugler that was amazing. Growing up in the 80's, I can really appreciate the costumes from George Michaels videos and Vogue magazine covers. If the attraction is still there, it's a must see.

Went there more than three time during past two years. Love it. The first Sunday every month is free entry. Have many events and activities so every time I would find something new. The shortcomings are that the arrangement of different buildings is confusing and some items of different times or types are put together. Would be better if there’s clear classification and arrangement.

Pretty good, no fresh air, no sanitizer for the public, security ???????? I don’t call that security. Parking was a huge issue ???? Information service runs by teenagers ????‍♂️???????? They don’t know how to guide people, especially tourists.

Not a bad permanent collection which includes Picasso some impressionist and an early Gerhard Richter. The temporary exhibits are well curated. Staff is phenomenal and helpful. The guy I came across was engaging, well-versed in the Quebec and international art scene and we discussed some of the pieces and artists in great length.

I was a tourist to Montreal from NYC and I have to say that this museum was one of the best art museums I've ever been to. The exhibits were beautifully curated, the building itself was elegant, and the staff was so friendly and accommodating to non-French speakers. Not to mention that admission was free for students, even international students! There was SO much art! I spent a day there and I felt like I could have gone another day because I did not see everything. Would 100% recommend and return!

Not happy at all. Came to see classics and nowhere on the website does it say that they closed off that whole section. I didn’t get experience I came for, I am not at all interested in contemporary art. I killed almost 2h looking for staff I was excited for and I don’t feel this was worth my money. Deserves 5+ stars at any time of the year! You get a good bang for your buck. For $24(taxes included) you get to see original works of Matisse, Picasso, cezanne, rodin etc as part of their permanent collection. Then they always always have something cool on exhibition. Last summer it was the showcase of impressionism and this October they have Yousef Karsh's portraits of many notable individuals on display (think Einstein, Roosevelt, Bardot). Last but not least, they currently have an interesting and meaningful section dedicated to themes of the current world (wink, well you know the big c) Completely overshadows many galleries/museums of similar nature in other major Canadian cities.

Its been combined with many galleries and museums into a single accessible building complex and so makes the touring simpler. There are 4 buildings to explore for the price of one. I wish I knew this before spending too much time in the first building. All of the buildings are connected by the lower level. There is a good variety of art spanning several eras. I happen to go during the Picasso exhibition, which was very interesting. If you are in Montreal I highly recommend visiting this place.

Not as much to see as we had hoped. But being the first Sunday of the month it was free so we're not complaining. The glass exhibit wasn't open, unfortunately. We enjoyed the Belle Epoch and the Pavilion of Peace section, and the Era of Annual Exhibitions. The Omar Ba exhibit was also interesting.

Terrible experience, after a rip off cab ride of around $50 from my hotel. Arrived at the venue to discover that you cannot purchase a ticket in person(very stupide). Only online purchases.... so, dumb....I pleaded with them and also mentioned I've been having many fraud issues with my online purchasing, thus, I had to deactivate it temporarily.... still no sympathy and I was refused entry. So, I was denied entry and was ripped off by a shady cab driver.... that was the experience in whole.... terrible display of tourism in this city....

What I like about MMFA is that whatever exhibition they always try to make you feel as you’re a part of that exhibition, part of the art, they make you travel in time, they always make you feel as if you were there. And this time was nothing less of that I was so touched by the amount of work, and the attention to detail in everything that my eyes were filled with tears. Apart from they exhibitions they have their permanent collection which is nothing short from amazingness.

This place has some interesting art. If you know a lot about art and have hours to kill....this is your place. If you don't know anything about art (like me), you'll have a better time at a science or history museum. But overall this is a nice place to spend a day but be warned that chances are you'll be standing there thinking.....I have no idea what I'm looking at.

This museum is near McGill Univ. We walked from Old Montreal to the museum and it took about 30 minutes. The museum appears to span 3 buildings so the opportunity to spendost of a day here is great. The entry was $16 Canadian dollars and that allows you to go into any part of the museum. There is a free coat check. There is a bistro with some good options at reasonable prices. (I had a delicious couscous salad for lunch.) There is also a restaurant for a more formal dining experience with servers. On Wednesdays the museum is open till 9pm. The bistro or cafe is closed in the evenings but the restaurant is open. I attended a special fashion exhibit, a retrospective on the work of Thierry Mugler. He is very well known in the entertainment world as he works with Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and others. I include images from the exhibit which was very well done and presented.

Great museum! There are 3 large buildings to visit. You will need at list 1 day to see all art. The ticket is valid for 2 days, because there are so much to see. Would definitely recommend visiting.

I have always been in love with the MBAM. The musical guided tour through the smartphone application for the new wing is good. I just wished that the security personnel would tell people to quiet down. It was loud to a pint some people were talking louder than the music I had in my earbuds.

The last time I visited the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts was in Fall 2014 for a college assignment. I had the chance to discover the ''Van Gogh to Kandinsky'' exhibit, which was truly inspirational ! When I was younger , I remember the museum having just paintings but now there are a variety of exhibitions. I particularly enjoyed going thru the different cultures and seeing the beautiful objects preserved through time. There was also the Yousuk Karsh photography section. What a remarkable and impressive collection of photos from politicians to actors to renowned scientists (Albert Einstein!).

Went to the museum on a Wednesday for the later event. When getting there it seems only the paid exhibit was open, came all the way so decided to still check it out, and I was very impressed with the current exhibit! Was cool to see so many outfits and they were shown in great fashion. The customers service was really great and spoke both English and French smoothly. Would love to come back during a time when you can view their normal collection.

Montreal's best museum - They have some really great permanent and temporary exhibitions. More than just fine art, there are nice collections of contemporary and modern art. The space is expansive and so there's so much to see, I'd say you probably need a few trips to really experience everything. I also really enjoy the architecture of the museum. It's cool to see the different eras fo the museum and the additions that have come after and how they all fit together while still being representative of their era. In the summer, there's also some great sculptures outside of the museum. I think the MBAM is a world class museum so if you enjoy this type of thing, then it's a must see in Montreal.

We went when the international arts section was closed for renovation, which significantly took away from our experience. It was bad timing as the exhibits we saw were good but few. Four+ floors in the Canadian arts section seems like a lot but the rooms are small. Temporary exhibits were interesting.

It's an impressive art museum, with free entry for visitors under 30 years old. That's what I call value! :) The museum is fairly accessible even with a stroller - there's a lot of stairs, but there's also always an elevator - somewhere... And there's a lot of staff to show you to the nearest elevator. We didn't find a nursing room, though.

This is a wonderful museum. I visited the Calder exhibition. It is the most comprehensive Calder exhibit I have ever seen. This is a user friendly museum, worth visiting both for their special exihbitions, and for their permanent collection. Parking on the street or multiple parking garages near by.

Some parts were closed due to restoration but there is no discount on ticket. We are still paying the same amount. That is a minus. Another issue was at light orientations. Especially at the 3rd floor gallery (1800’s) lighting placement creates reflections on paintings which makes harder to see paintings on the upper row. Also on some statues there were shadows, which makes negative impact on receiving the artist’s message. I found quite small when you compare Quebec’s diversity and history.

An enjoyable time at the museum exploring exhibits that focus on different disciplines within traditional and contemporary art forms. The main entrance is modern with plenty of natural light pouring in. The building is multiple stories high, and the interior architecture in itself is also engaging. Exhibits are informative and well put together. Well worth the visit.

Mummy exhibit was so packed with people that I wouldn't recommend going on a monthly Sunday-free day . Btw this particular exhibit was not free that day [ 24$ per adult ] . You had to sometimes look over heads at exhibits , with kids running around, lots of noise that sort of ruins the whole atmosphere of tombs, embalming, hieroglyphics... How about SILENCE.? Not a bad thing sometimes. I was disappointed that we didnt get to see under the bandages, the actual skin and bones of the mummies but it was explained that the mummy relics have to be preserved with less invasive handling. These mummies are on loan from the London,UK Royal Museum which I visited and remember seeing their mummies under the bandages which in spite of being macabre was informative with regards to embalming techniques.

The museum consists of three interconnected buildings including a renovated church in Sherbrooke St with an underground tunnel joining them.

Excellent museum. Be sure to grab a map though as it's quite a confusing layout. Also, they make you check your bag in a different line than tickets so have one person wait in the coat check line while the other gets tickets.

Too cramped at its original location, the Art Association strongly considered the idea of moving from Phillips Square to the Golden Square Mile, where the most of the city's financial elite lived at the time. They settled on the site of the abandoned Holton House, on Sherbrooke Street West, for the construction of the new museum. Senator Robert Mackay, the owner of the property, was convinced to sell the house for a good price.[12] A committee responsible for the construction of the museum was formed consisting of James Ross, Richard B. Angus, Vincent Meredith, Louis-Joseph Forget and David Morrice. Most members of this committee offered a considerable amount of their own money for the construction of the museum. This included a large donation by businessman James Ross. The Phillip's Square location was demolished in 1912, and is now a Burger King. A limited architectural design competition was conducted to select an architect among three architectural firms that were invited to apply. The museum committee selected the project proposed by brothers Edward Maxwell and William Sutherland Maxwell. Trained in the Beaux-Arts tradition, they proposed a building that catered to French taste of the time: sober and majestic. Work began in the summer of 1910 and finished in the fall of 1912. On December 9, 1912, the Governor General of Canada, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, inaugurated the new Museum of the Art Association of Montreal on Sherbrooke Street West in front of 3,000 people present for the occasion.

Was able to visit this beautiful museum during our trip in Montreal. Admission was free for people under the age of 30, however, certain places within the museum were off limits. I really appreciated the art pieces displayed in this museum, as well as the varying exhibitions and collections available to look around. This place is great for anyone to visit - families, friends, or by yourself. There was also a coat-check that was free of charge where you could also leave your backpacks, making it much more convenient. Would highly recommend this museum to anyone visiting Montreal to adore the beauty within!

It's a huge museum divided in several buildings, each with different levels, it's like a maze. Each building are interconnected by an underground passage. If you can't find something, don't be afraid to ask for help. There are guides on each floor and at each exhibition hall to guide you to where you want to go. We were mostly interested to see the Egyptian mummies at exploring ancient lives which will only be available until February 2020. If you feel tired, there are benches, lounges to relax. Other exhibitions we saw were The Medieval Nave - Northern and Southern Renaissance, also Baroque to Rococo Napoleon gallery. I don't think we covered a lot but that was a good 3 1/2 hour, almost 4. Go early if you want to cover more. I took a picture of the museum guide.

Museum very mediocre and overrated, some exhibitions closed in summer 2021, which we had not been informed about before purchasing the ticket. The best part of the museum was the Inuit art, located on the 4th floor like a diamond. The amount and lack of a smile on the part of the museum guards made me feel like I was in a prison. I do not plan to visit this place again and I do not recommend it. Disappointing experience.

Amazing! I would go back here in a heartbeat. The exhibits were wonderful, well spaced, and even on a free busy Saturday over the holidays it wasn’t too packed with people. We only had less than two hours to explore the museum but managed to see everything… I would give yourself at least three hours to fully take it all in. One of the best museums I’ve been to in a while. The staff and facilities were wonderful and the architecture made for tons of Spectacular photo opportunities and selfie posts.

This is a spectacular museum complex, among the best I've ever visited. The haute couture exhibit (Spring 2019) was spectacular and deeply engaging. The permanent exhibits were also very fine: we particularly enjoyed the household furniture selection. We spent about four hours in the museum and only skimmed the surface.

A definite must if you are in Montreal. It is free for anyone under 31 and between 31 and 65 it's around 20$CAD. The permanent exhibit is distributed in four buidlings, each of which follow a specific theme: Quebec art history, World Historical Art, Contemporary art and others. There are temporary exhibitions always so better check in their website what it is to see if it's worth paying the extra or not.

I think this is the best museum i have visited in Canada. The works of some of the greatbmasters of modern arts are on displays here, from Monet, Gaugin, to andy warhol. Also features a few classical artworks and some from.medieval period. So basically it has a little bit of everything.I'd love to come again on my next visit to Montreal. Needless to say, wear proper shoes as it is quite big area.

Very extensive museum where everyone can find something for themselves. Well, maybe less interesting for kids. It has several buildings and we spent more than 2 hours then, and could have spent more, but got too hungry. You can renter the same day though. The restaurant was closed when we were there. Pretty nice museum shop. Was a bit too cold in the building. I wish they would have requested all passengers to have vaccination pass. I would recommend checking the map of the museum first and starting what interest you the most, cause otherwise you get pretty tired by the end. The museum had art from around the world (my least favorite part probably) on the top floor of one of the buildings, then several contemporary exhibitions, exhibition about saving the planet, one with art from employees of the museum, and a lot more. I would come several times to explore fully.

Loved it! This is definitely one of the best art museums I've been to. It's enormous! We were there for many hours and I still think we didn't see everything. It's almost entirely accessible, and I saw people in wheelchairs. I highly recommend visiting it. The museum staff members are friendly and helpful.

Absolutely beautiful and fascinating exhibition! I saw the How Long Does It Take for One Voice to Reach Another temporary exhibition and it has some fabulous pieces of art. My favorite was the unison of 40 voices and you could go near a specific speaker to hear one particular choir singer but when you go back to the center, you can hear the harmony of voices instead of a single voice. The Yousuf Karsh photography exhibit was fantastic too; all the portraits were beautifully taken and such stunning works of art.

Fantastic arts museum. It is a large complex, the building across the street is also part of the museum and they have an underground tunnel connecting the buildings. Please know that you are not allowed to eat or drink in spaces where there is art so basically only on the first floor when entering. There is a lot to view I never looked at the entire exhibit as I got extremely tired but it was beautiful.

The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts is an excellent place to experience art and have a leisure afternoon at (The first Sunday of every month is free for all museum goers). The entrance hall is stunning and the indoor sculpture garden (with a glass ceiling) is an excellent place to read or spend an afternoon with a friend. The museum cafe and shop are also worth a visit and rival any quintessential museum cafe or shop. There are a number of excellent permanent exhibits on Canadian and Indigenous art, especially in the auxiliary pavilions. The museum also holds an excellent rotation of temporary art exhibits that showcased in major museums across the world. *Covid only: The ticketing process is online and visiting the museum was a very fluid experience even with restrictions. You need to register online to visit and there are only a few sections of the museum open at a particular time.*

There were plenty of artworks all over the places. I could see many sculptures and artworks not only paintings. But in my personal opinion, they were too many. I could not concentrate at some point because there were too many things within my view. I was lucky of no enter fee. So that is good. Have fun!

I went there 2 times. And I liked it very much. The second time it was the exposition of the french designer “Thierry Mugler” who is also known and famous for his perfume of all times: “Angel” with a star shape, and also the new perfume : “Muse” which is really strong and charming. The exposition was mostly his dress designs and photos of him and the models or stars wearing his designs. He designed for many famous singers, like Lady Gaga, Madonna, ... The show was awesome.

I'm ashamed to say that I've been in Montreal for 9 years now and this was the first time I went to this museum. Let's start by the staff. I loved them, very welcoming and doing more than just answering questions, giving advices too. Now up to the collections. A lot of stories to learn about all sorts of cultures. Some places are so beautifuly done and appeasing that you just want to stay there and wonder. Overall, great visit. I highly recommend. Next time I'll have to try the guided tour.

Displays were excellent well laid out and organized. Collection was very well organized. Lighting in several rooms is terrible to the point where the art itself is hard to see. Bulbs used were either too harsh, blinding, and other rooms too dark. See the photo of the Dali, the light was gleaming off the oils. The lighting needs to be redone in many rooms.

A little bit expensive ($24 for adults, no concession prices for older people which is unusual) but still a good museum to visit. Usually no "blockbuster" temporary exhibits but I always find the Stewart pavilion/wing the most interesting as this contains a fabulous collection of decorative arts (furniture, lighting, textiles, jewellery etc) which traces all the trends since Victorian times, including art deco, art nouveau and more modern pieces, especially Italian design from the 60 & 70's. On my last visit, I noticed for the first time a large collection of pre-columbian artefacts that I must have missed on my previous visits. The restaurant was inexplicably closed on the Saturday that I visited, although a local resident had recommended it to me as having an interesting menu.

Loiter around this lovely museum! The Musee des Beaux Arts is always a fun place... even with an irritating pandemic lurking. The museum is currently closed to the general public to slow the spread of the covid19 BUT it is open if you made reservations in advance to visit. (A sympathetic security guard let us make a reservation from the foyer today as it was a special child-free day for us.) There was a funky German graphics exhibit that was sold out (because we were trying to buy last minute tickets in the doorway) and some other stuff but we wandered through the permanent exhibits and still discovered new stuff. Most importantly, we saw Chaki's haunting installation of the Shoah. The Holocaust must never be forgotten and Chaki was able to process it in a weirdly mesmerizing way. We also saw happy, funny sculptures and paintings. The guards were helpful as the Covid19 directional paths were confusing for me and they guided me onto the right walkway before i sent up flares. Remember to make a reservation in advance and be prepared for at least three hours of wandering. The Musee des Beaux Arts advertised that they now have an app to help us enjoy our visits.

The museum has a wide range of art spanning across different time periods and continents, and the collection is spread out across five buildings (called pavilions) interconnected at the underground level. I especially enjoyed the level that had the impressionist and post impressionist paintings. There was a temporary exhibit featuring Thierry Mugler's designs when we visited. The museum is overall a very manageable size and appropriately done in a few hours.

Our large extended family (10+ people, including children aged 3-13) visited yesterday for the first time. Wow! We were blown away! The museum itself is expansive and covers 4+ buildings, each with several floors. We definitely did not run out of things to see! I spent 4 interesting hours wandering through the museum discovering many Inuit, Canadian and Quebec masters. The Ben Weider's Napoleon art collection is very interesting as well. This museum is a must see for all art lovers visiting Montreal.

It is never a dull time at the museum, at least not for me! I went to see the Egyptian mommies exhibit and found it absolutely fascinating! It runs until February so I encourage all history enthusiasts to go and discover it; a first of its kind in North America. It doesn't disappoint. I love the MBAM!!

Are you in town for a week or only for the day? This place is a must if you want to see what Montreal have to offer. Big and free admission for those age under 30 for the permanent exhibition. You only need to pay if you want to see their limited time exposition, which is always worth it. My favourite was Mapplethorpe! Go and enjoy.

Riopelle is a spectacular exhibition! Precautions are being taken to ensure the safest visit for all museum goers! The videos, pictures, sculptures, masks etc. helped embellish the experience and I have been left with a deep appreciation of the indigenous people and their contribution to Canada's history through the eyes of a great master and his friends who made this exhibit possible. The canoe making video was a delight to the skill of a master indigenous craftsman!

Beautiful museum with a quite impressive permanent collection which is free to visit. I went to the Picasso exposition they held 1-2 months ago, it was very well displayed and the flow of the exposition was neat. The museum itself is very luminous, clean and inspiring. I love coming here and am a proud VIP member of the MBAM.

This is a must-see museum in Montreal. The expansion of its premises a few years ago helped to bring its rich collection out of the vaults, but, in my opinion, the museum will have to expand more to accommodate works that tend to be displayed in a cramped setting. Much of the art can benefit from added space. I would rather see less of it until such time that the museum finds a solution. But don't let that stop you from enjoying the exhibits. Come prepared. Expect crowds during summertime.

Great exposition of Riopelle, only drawback is the setup of the museum. Would have been nice to exit the museum instead of having to go down 2 floors down, cross under the street and then back up on the main floor to leave the premises

Loved the featured fashion exhibit on Balenciaga!! The museum is located very central Montreal in a historic building. Although the building is small, there are three levels. The two main feature exhibits are a fair size, and if you go after a certain time (I think 5pm) entrance is half price. You will still have plenty of time to complete the museum.

Lovely art museum. Well layout base on period and type of arts. Lots of descriptions to the painting, and did i mention great architecture? Museum giftshop is also a bookstore, I am sure the museum staff had hand picked some of the material sold in the gift shop. Visited it twice within my visit and did not regreat it (I am a slow museum viewer). Do not forget you can enter museum free if you are under 30. However I do highly encourage you to pay for the current picasso exhibit as it give you a lot of insight on what inspired picasso and his art (and i learned a lot) , and it also displayed different medium of art picasso had created.

We did not anticipate how much there was to do here. If you like walking around without reading or learning too much, 2-3 hours. If, like my wife and I, you feel the need to read and learn literally everything the museum has to offer, then you’d need 5-6 hours to get through it.

It was just simply amazing and very immerssive! Seing the history of the egyptian era, the way of life, culture, ceremonies, etc..just aloud me to connect with the past in a way I never experienced. Extremely well organized..online tkts, staff available to usher you in and provide guidance. Several galleries , well documented information( English and French) on the artists ,genre, the period and influences...can easily spend half a day there. A must visit in Montreal.Parking is tricky and has to be found in the adjoining streets.

Really loved this museum. They had a lot of different works and the set up was really nice throughout the floors. It is quite large as well as it connects into separate floors off of the main level which break off into their own levels with some permanent and temporary exhibits. Came up from Toronto and stopped in here, if you’re going to come more than once you should get the cheaper membership as general admission is $24 but the membership is $35 and it gets you into other museums.

Signac and the Indépendants is the only exhibition accessible to visitors now. Admissions can only be purchased online. It was my first time to visit, I would like to come back to check other exhibitions in the near future. Off site parking is available along the street. Traffic were controlled at the entrance, but showrooms were crowded even though it was 10 am

it's always a pleasure to come to the museum. this is my second visit to the Jean-Paul Riopelle exhibit. there's always something new to see even if you have already seen the exhibit. in addition, there are new things elsewhere in the rest of the museum as well. I saw two new exhibits: an exhibit called Les Impermanants by Yann Pocreau and another one by Caroline Monnet called Ninga Mineh, that i particularly liked for its moving starkness. i also enjoyed Paul Walde's Requiem for a Glacier, a video of a marvelous musical piece played and sung on a glacier in British Columbia.

Large museum with a variety of art types. It is designed very well and entry is free but does not include admission to special exhibits which is $15 for adults. We went here to spend time before a concert we we're going to and we're surprised at how large it was and did not have time to see everything. Great location right near shopping and restraunt on St Catherine.

I really liked the fact that one could take pictures inside. Everything is in both French and English. The building opposite to it is also connected via the basement. It isn't quite possible to do justice to it in one day.

It's got a very few big name pieces like Rodin and Picasso, but mostly 2nd and 3rd tier offerings. The worst was a collection of rubbish done by the staff that took most of a floor. Save your money. A visit to Schwartz's would be more satisfying to the discerning.

This is an absolute must visit place if you like good art. We spent two days but one can manage in half a day too. Parking is impossible so use public transit. There is a path to the mount Royal from the museum but it can get a little too much to pack in a day for some.

I love visiting local museums when I'm traveling, been to many in Europe and Asia, and this exhibition was one of the worse when it comes to communicating to its guest. I left not only feeling disappointed, but extremely frustrated when I learned after leaving from OTHER reviewers that there were underground passages that lead to adjacent buildings with more artwork. Apparently, I had completely missed out on 75% of the exhibition (which I hear is amazing!) because there was no map, signs or the staff to help inform. Even the exterior of the adjacent building was confusing, the doors were sealed shut as it was closed with no signs telling you to cross the street to enter. I paid $50 (for two people) at the front desk and was left to figure the rest out. Visiting their website, I also don’t see any map that I don’t have to dig for. To realize the extent the lack of communication is that we once stood in their dark elevator having to guess which floors would work because there were no signs to let guest know which ones are closed. Overall, I took time out of my schedule to visit this place as it was highly rated, but I left feeling dismissed. I don’t like writing bad reviews, but reading other low stars reviews - I think other guest have had the same experienced I did without realizing it (notes are saying the museum was small) – it’s warranted.

Wish that the website was a little clearer on the fact that not all the museum is open for visit. I bought tickets to go today for myself and my husband and was disappointed to find that the exhibits that we were interested in to see were not open. We don't like contemporary art...and that was mostly what was open so, we were not happy. I'm sure for those who like that type of art they would be pleased though. I just wish that the website would have said which of their permanent collections were not able to view...cause I would have saved my $45 or $50 :)

Great place to visit. I went late morning, so it wasn't that busy, but as I left art 15:30 there was a lot of queue to get in. The Egyptian exhibition was great. There are some surprising pieces scattered all over the museum, no matter what your taste in art!

This place is amazing!!! EAT before you go and DRINK a lot of water .There are fountains throughout the buildings so don't bring water to load you down .Three buildings of glorious art,past ,current and beyond. I strongly suggest getting a map at the front door. The buildings are colour coded on the map to make it easier to navigate. Lots of bathrooms to use. Wear comfy shoes! You can check your jacket for a fee .

This place is a gem!!! Located in the heart of downtown, I got to immerse myself in culture and explore my own views through the lense of the artists. It was refreshing to an activity other than taking yet another walk with a friend. To be honest the limited entry set due to covid made for an ambiance to truly enjoy each collection without over crowding. It was peaceful. The works were enlightening. I bought the avant garde pass and I will be going back!!

Great free exhibit! Beautiful, thought provoking art. The permanent displays are the ones that are included without a fee. Easily accessible. Elevator for every floor, so stairs are optional, which is great for those with less mobility. The walls of windows by the staircases on every floor show sides of Montreal we don't take the time to stop and admire, not to mention the street art it happens to highlight. All in all a great experience.

Overall a very disappointing experience and collection.The staff were remarkably rude to us our entire visit. Be warned that you have to enter into the exhibition side (older building) within a half an hour of arrival, which no one told us. There are two entrances, so be careful of this. When we arrived (within the half an hour) we were literally chastised by a staff member for almost being late. We wouldn't have been if there were any indication of this rule! Their online booking system is a confusing and convoluted mess, also why aren't these expectations explained on the website? Their collections are overall disappointing, save for their collection of Canadian Nationalism which was lovely. However, this was a small section of the museum. I imagine it would be more worth the visit depending on what their visiting collection is, but at this time I would suggest patrons stay clear. I recommend you save your money and check out one of Montreal’s other museums.

I found the facility to be very clean, welcoming and beautiful. Staff was helpful and kind regardless of my lack of French and despite it being very busy for a large event. The Museum was organized well for tourists or locals visiting. Close to shopping, food and other amenities. Other patrons enjoying the art were extremely respectful and quiet which helped me to enjoy the art that much more. Great experience overall.

If you are interested in the permanent collection, don't go right now as everything is closed. There is a Riopelle exhibit, which is good if you are interested in this particular artist, there is a small but high quality exhibit of Canadian art, and a small amount of contemporary art. I wish they had made clear on their website that the vast majority of the museum is closed because we wouldn't have bought tickets if we had known that. You can't see most of what is shown on the website, so the experience does not live up to what is advertised.

This museum is absolutely amazing and never ceases to surprise. They have new exhibits every 6-8 months and the permanent collection is superbe. I've been going for many years and I love to go back for special exhibitions and to re-visit their collection. This is an absolute must if you visit Montreal (or if you live here!).
