Great historical stop on the way through Jasper. Take a break and enjoy a short hike down to the river. Awesome scenery!

Not a bad place to stretch your legs, not too much to see but the info boards are interesting. There is no actual house

This site holds some significance for me. It was the original site for Jasper House, which was a fort for the fur industry. My ancestor worked there and was the right hand man to the chief factor. His name was Jean Baptiste Osime Berland and legend has it, he was a great man to have in the bush. He was often found helping newcomers to the land. In one particular instance, he helped a map maker who was so grateful to JB, that he named two rivers after him that to this day are known as the Big Berland and Little Berland rivers. Both of those rivers are near Hinton, AB. The site itself is a short walk (.25 miles or 400m)to a viewing platform where you can read about Jasper House and take some nice pictures. It sits right on the river and is a nice spot. Lots of parking and outhouses are available.

If you stop you need to follow the trail. The walk is flat and less than 5 minutes. There is no house per se, but there are plaques with historical information along the way to the river where Jasper House originally sat. There is now a raised deck, of sorts, to overlook the Athabasca River, and the view is great. You can imagine boats docking along the edge of the water. Worth a photo or two.

4 star for the eloquently written plaque and the easy access off the road. Lost a point because I couldn't find much other than many footprints and lots of mud beyond that.

Since there is no house anymore, not even a shack or cellar, it is very disappointing to come here. Only a few photos are shown of the place and you can walk to the site where the house has been. Not worth the walk.

Jules

There is actually no house here but a fairly short trail leads to a nice lookout over the river with great views of the surrounding mountains.

Beautiful little hike.

Easy walk to the end of the trail in about 5 minutes. Honestly i dont go through jasper without stopping there. I think most people see the outhouse and say "yup, thats jasper house" and then commend themselves for such great wit and have another handful of chips as they drive by. Theres a few more things to read, and a beautiful view but you gotta go get them yourself.

Eric Lotgerink

Lovely view and interpretive signs but nothing to actually see ( apart from the always spectacular Canadian scenery)

Certainly worth the walk..getting to the end was breath taking

There is a short walk from the highway to a lookout with interpretation panels to tell the story of the 18th C fur trading post called Jasper House. The artist Paul Kane had written a description after his visit. His diary entry gives a sense of what absolute arrogant snobs the First Nations people had to deal with.

Mel G

What a surprising view of the river and mountains! Jasper House is a hidden gem right off the road, a short 10 minute walk through the beautiful forest. Breathtaking views for photography, cool water for dipping toes and rest for the soul. Recharge!

This minimalistic National historic site commemorates a small resupply fort that once equipped travlers of the Athabasca River with supplies they needed to cross the mountains. Nothing remains of the original structure, but the interpretive panels give an ok idea of why the Jasper house was important.

A 300 metre hike to the Athabasca River through the forest and along the river bed. Beautiful views of the mountain vistas. This is an easy hike to do with the family and pets. This area is a formal outpost of historical significance.

asha shiekdon

Nothing here to see, got bitten by a ton of mosquitoes. i would rather spend more time at one of more popular lakes or hiking.

Some of the signs need to be fixed. Otherwise it is a nice short walk and really neat to see the original Jasper house site!

Fantastic scenery east of Jasper. The mountains are farther apart and the mountains just as nice views.Heading east on highway #1. you are leaving the mountains.
