Disappointing improvement - $125M???
As zoos go, I suppose our zoo is above standard, so did $125 million buy as an average zoo? I begrudgingly write this review, so will present facts & photos. A zoo usually is a "better" option for many mammals coming from lower standard zoos. I don't agree with captivity in any scenario, but if we're providing a healthier, safer and to some extent, "enriching" environment, than, yes, zoos are the necessary result of human abuse, greed, neglect. etc to innocent creatures.
FACTS: METRO owns our zoo.
METRO has an annual budget of ~$400M
For nearly 10 yrs, OR zoo was under construction with a $125M budget.
Adult tickets are $25 pp
There are 2-3 places to buy food and be seated at tables outside to eat/drink. The new Growlers eatery is larger than most enclosures, ie. the cougar enclosure. There is more space for people to eat/sit/consume than the elephants have to roam. WHY? I was able to see fencing from every angle in each enclosure - WHY? Their will never be enough room for wild animals who travel up to 100 miles per week, but I cannot support a zoo that has not evolved, especially with a substantial budget, and a VERY expensive reconstruction to overlook this. I was sick - especially the cougars, who's enclosure is about the size of my townhome - 2,500 sq. ft AND overlooking the condors - which is just cruel. NOT EVEN SURE WHY cougars or big horn sheep are in the zoo - these can be found in the mountains in the wild. The polar bear, Nora, was just plain lonely - I believe a friend has arrived, but she was just playing with her empty plastic pool and hiding from the laughing crowd.
The black bears seemed sad too, and a group of mom's and their young kids were screaming at them and laughing - I reported them. PLEASE HAVE RESPECT. THEIR LIVES ARE GRIM ENOUGH WITHOUT HUMANS TAUNTING THEM. Disappointed, METRO. I cannot support this zoo and will continue to keep my animal advocacy eye close to you.
On a positive note, the animals did look healthy and weights seemed appropriate for their species.
