Staff are very knowledgeable about the insects and I really like the fact that staff approach you to provide you information instead of waiting to be asked. The second floor exhibit is an interesting combination of museum style and live exhibits. Interpreters are on site to explain exhibits and will let you hold a number of insects including millipedes and stick bugs. They also have an functional glass beehive where you can observe the bees working. The butterfly exhibit is nice, though not exceptional.

The leafcutter ant habitat is something to behold, crossing multiple levels of the building. They even have a really really nice (and free!) dog kennel on site for your pups so your pups are safe while you check out the exhibit.

I wouldn't have chosen to stop here, but was with a tour group. Excellent display of butterflies change from caterpillar to flight. A huge ant farm actively collecting leaves. Tarantulas and more.

Absolutely fun place to take the kids. The butterfly garden is the biggest hit! My daughter loved it. Butterflies even landed on her. They have a bee hive on the upper level and the workers can point out the queen bee. The workers will even take out a stick bug so you can get a chance to hold it. If you're driving through NL make sure to drop in and see this amazing place.

The Newfoundland Insectarium is a wonderful place that is easy to ignore on your way to Gros Morne but is a must see location! My family and I fully enjoyed the Insectarium and were amazed by the numbers of beautiful little critters. Well worth a stop.

Especially exciting is the beehive, which can be observed through Plexiglas. The insectarium also offers a relatively large souvenir shop. Our little son (3 years old) was thrilled. Definitely worth a visit. (Original) “Insekten nicht nur anschauen sondern erleben” Das Insektarium verfügt über einen schönen Butterfly Pavillon und über 2 Etagen Insekten, mit welchen man mit Hilfe des freundlichen, hilfsbereiten und kompetenten Personals auf Tuchfühlung gehen kann. Besonders spannend ist der Bienenstock, welchen man durch Plexiglas beobachten kann. Das Insektarium bietet auch noch einen relativ grossen Souveniershop. Unser kleiner Sohn (3 Jahre) war begeistert. Beautiful tropical butterflies. Insects were interesting but the ants were the highlight, their clear tube"highways" ran from downstairs up to the second floor where their colony lived. You could watch them harvesting leaves and carrying it back to their home.

It's a fascinating experience to visit the museum. The guide are very friendly and helpful to answer millions of questions coming from us. The first floor has a souvenir shop, a room full of caterpillars and the butterfly garden. The butterfly garden has certainly opened my eyes with the interactions with the butterflies. Because the butterflies prefer warmer temperature, unfortunately the garden felt like a tropical jungle with high humidity which I didn't enjoy much. Second and third floor are the air-conditioned exhibitions. Spider usually scares me so I didn't visit the third floor at all. Second floor consists of specimens and live insects. My favourites are the leaf-cutting ant colony and the beehive.

Great stop in Deer Lake. You're allowed to hold some of the bugs and the staff are very knowledge about them. The bee hive is neat, and the ants are worth checking out. You can watch an ant carry a piece of leaf from one end of the room to the other.

Fantastic museum with very knowledgeable and friendly staff! Hold insects, see a bee colony close up, watch leaf eater ants in a new installation, check out the live butterflies and more! For only $13 Canadian, it's well worth the stop and not far from the Deer Lake airport.

Excellent exhibits and friendly, knowledgable, and helpful staff make this place well worth visiting. The butterfly pavilion is very nicely designed and features many beautiful butterflies fluttering all over the place - they were landing on us within seconds of our arrival. It is very hot and humid in the pavilion, but the staff prepared us for that by suggesting that we visit it before and/or after visiting the rest of the (air conditioned) exhibits - this turned out to be excellent advice. The bug exhibits upstairs are well laid out with lots of interesting information about all the types of bugs on display. We were even lucky enough to see a staff member feeding crickets to many of the critters.

Excellent spot to stop in! The staff was super friendly and knowledgeable, especiall on the second floor. We had a young gentleman who was FULL of facts. The butterfly garden was beautiful and serene. We held a few as they landed but they're also fun to sit and watch. We held multiple friendly insects, baby scorpions and stick bugs inside as well. Finished the day off with some ice cream! Lovely experience overall. For the record, this isnt just a family spot. We are early 30s and loved it!

If your in the area this is a must stop! The butterfly greenhouse is full of amazing butterflies from the tropics. Inside you will find insects from all over the world along with a section of native species. They also have a small cafe which serves ice cream and drinks.

The gift shop there is very large with many cool, different items you can buy so you can remember your trip. The butterfly room is my favorite part. This place is fabulous! Even if you're not into bugs the building is worth the look. It is an old barn that has been refurbished, with huge beams and wooden interior. There's a butterfly pavilion with live butterflies from all over the world and you can even watch them come out of their cocoons! They have live and mounted displays of bugs from around the world and a working beehive that you can see right into! A must for young and old!

This was our second time visiting the Insectarium while on an across the island family vacation. The kids loved it as usual and the butterflies never disappoint.

Newfoundland Insectarium convinces with its numerous living butterflies on the ground floor, its bees and similar insects on the first floor and its spiders on the second floor. There is also a huge gift shop at the entrance. Staff is friendly and helpful. However, the entrance fee of thirteen dollars is slightly elevated for what you get. On a side note, check out the wonderful hiking trails behind the building.

Even though I am not a fan of bugs, the exhibits were incredible! The staff were informative and knew the answer to any question we asked. The option is there to pick up and a wide selection of bugs and insects, but they stayed behind a glass during our visit. The staff taught us everything to know about bees and ants, and I cannot wait to come back and see the ant exhibit when the population increases! The butterfly exhibit was amazing, and the butterflies are massive and beautiful! Recommend to anyone, even if scared of bugs!

Very cool! I love that you can hold some of the coolest insects, and the Butterfly Pavilion is soooo magical! I'm sure I only saw a third of the butterflies there, they're hiding everywhere. Some really stunning pictures too. Price is a little high, not convinced it's entirely worth it, but I'm sure it costs a lot to keep this place running so it's probably fair. There's also a nice nature trail behind the building.

Can't say enough good things about this place. Extremely interesting displays, with a good selection of pinned as well as live specimens. The staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and often eager to help. We were approached several times with offers to hold some of the safer specimens and just for general information too! Wait time wasn't bad at all, we arrived on a Sunday afternoon and we were in immediately. Gift shop is cute, but also has incredible variety. The butterfly garden is breathtaking, very very hot and humid, but almost magical. 10/10 do recommend.

We had extra time in Deer Lake and are so, so glad we stopped by this place. The staff is the best part, they're all super friendly and kind! The displays are awesome and you even get to touch/hold some insects. Personal favorite was the butterfly garden :)

Every year we visit the insectarium. Our youngest loves this place and insists on coming. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable. They engage children in conversation and often offer to take out certain insects so the kids can see them interact with humans. Prior to covid my kids got a chance to hold stick bugs. My little loved it. This year the new leaf cutter ant display is comprehensive and well built. You get a look into how the colony works. It's pretty interesting!

If u r in love with insects, u cant ignore this facility on the side of the main road. Nice collection of insects. Live and dead. Butterfly garden is well maintained. Friendly staff. Look for the chief entomologist there. Guy is a super interpreter. Gift shop is kind a expensive but worth the price.

Quite the experience! Tons to see and learn about, you can go inside a butterfly garden, try to find the queen bee amongst thousands of other bees, and lots more, I got to hold a stick bug too! Staff is friendly, admission is fare, and lots of interesting trinkets and souvenirs are available as well, would return again.

The instectatrium is a fantastic way to spend the afternoon, especially if you visit their Butterfly Pavilion. I recommend wearing bright colors for this. Great little spot to explore on a rainy day if have even a slight interest in nature! From the exterior, the Insectarium seems unassuming, but there's actually a lot to see. I spent about 2 hours here, with the bulk of that time exploring the main exhibit (despite only uploading butterfly garden photos). They have a very fun live collection of tree cutter ants, as well as a few arachnids, stick insects, and more. Their beetle collection and "insect as art" exhibits were also quite impressive. Finally, the staff are very friendly and happy to share their knowledge about the collections should you have any questions. Overall, a cool spot to drop by for all ages - not just kids! ????????????????????

Great place to stop with the kids! Staff were extremely friendly, and let our kids release some of the new butterflies into the area. I hope they survived.... We got to hold some critters and see a multitude of different species. The little trail around the back was nice, but wasn't maintained very well though, and we had to turn back around the half-way point. Would definitely recommend a visit here!

Great layout and exhibits. This is one of the only museum style exhibits that is super interactive and a go at your own pace style of environment. The curators are very knowledgeable and eager to show you everything and they even let you handle the insects. This is a must seen in newfoundland. The time it takes to go through this is between 30 minutes to a full day depending on your time limit. Great destination while waiting for flights or just a fantastic family vacation.
