This Zoo is classified in the category of Zoo.
My family loves this local zoo and have been members for a few years. It's small but well-funded and what it lacks in grandeur it makes up for with unique areas such as the new nature play area and the always fun zoo train and carousel. Buttonwood makes strides to help educate old and young alike about important issues such as climate change and conservation. We try to go at least once a week- but we admittedly spend more time there in the spring and fall. For a small zoo you can find yourself spending hours wandering through (but even with small kids, you can do a rather quick walkthrough and feel like you got the whole experience without having to dedicate the entire day.) We never feel rushed and it's just a genuinely nice place to enjoy nature. A family membership is very affordable and offers reciprocity at many zoos around the country.
The zoo had friendly staff and its small only a few animals there. We couldnt sit down anywhere to rest our feet and enjoy our water. They had all the benches blocked off. my boyfriend has bad feet n couldnt sit to rest. We still enjoyed seeing all the animals i loved the sprinkler to cool off with.
We brought my 5 month old granddaughter and 3 generations of women in our family and had an absolutely great time.Bonus was how nice all the employees were especially the woman who explained about the lizards to us I know one was named Frankie. We would absolutely come back here when my granddaughter gets a little bigger but no matter how big or small you are it's a great time to spend as a family.
Cute and organized city zoo. It has collections of aquatic, rainforest and farm animals. It does not have large carnivores though. Very family friendly and a good way to spend an hour. The entire park is about a mile loop. Clean bathroom and plenty parking. Excellent
I have been coming here with my children for years and they are finally ungrading! There are lots of new animals like several types of monkeys and a sloth! Really good time!
Cute little zoo. Animals looked sad though.
This was the perfect way to spend half a day with my inquisitive two year old! While it's smaller than other zoos; the animals appeared will cared for, staff was very available and informative, and the train and carousel were a nice addition. It also didn't hurt that there were a few air conditioned exhibits on the hot day we were there. Highly recommend!

What a great little zoo! Don't miss the starfish and seahorses. The Canadien Lynx was super cool too!!
What an awesome zoo, very cool. Animals all seemed very well taken care of and the staff was very friendly and helpful. Will definitely return!
It's a wonderful place to go. The animals are well taken care of. They have really nice habitats of their home land. There's a train and carousel. Cafe with great muniches and a cute gift shop. The best thing everyone who works there is so friendly and caring they go out of their way to tell all about their beautiful animal friend they take care of. There so much more at the ZOO YOU need to see for your self , they decorate for holidays. It truly becomes a magical place if you love animals like I do.
Great place to take the family! My grandchildren loved it.
A great small zoo. They have a small train and miracle rounds. It's 10 bucks for each adults and 6 per child. 2 dollars per ticket to go on rides. It's a great place for kids even adults. The have lots of benches to sit. They are a bit low though. This is a.must stop if you have young kids.
Little zoo however everything was really well kept. The elephants and bear was really awesome. The red pandas are the stars of the show though. Very cool little zoo overall.
My sons and I love this zoo. It is perfect for little ones as it's small in size. You could do the whole thing in about 2 hours. The animals are loved and well cared for. Can't wait to put our membership to use this year!
Had a great time. The animals looked well cared for. Will recommend to friends and will be going back
It's a small Zoo, but it is awesome ! My son and I just love it ????
This is an amazing small zoo. The enclosures are designed well to give good visibility while also being as friendly as possible to the animals. My son had a great time, particularly enjoying the elephants and horses. Truth be told, the place isn't big enough or have enough variety to be a "great" zoo, but for its size and price, they pack an awful lot of love and fun into a small space. We would happily come again.

A very small zoo with some great exhibits but a little pricey ticket wise for it size. We were able to get though the zoo in about 2 hours. We took our time to admire the animals along the way. Almost all the animal exhibits gave you clear views. The grounds/animals seemed well kept and clean. The animals seemed to like viewing the humans outside as much as we enjoyed watching them play around, eat, loff and sleep. There was an area where you could have a cool hands on encounter with some sea stars, sting ray and little bitty cute sharks. The man in charge of the sea life touch exhibit was extremely friendly and knowledgeable about the animals inside. They cared about helping your kids not be afraid of the animals, teaching them, and telling them funny stories about each animal inside. There seemed to be a smattering of extra paid activities that you could enjoy like the carousel and train. Price wise the food was reasonable and so was the gift shop. They really seemed to want you to have a great time. We did have a great time.
Great place. A bit small but plenty to see and the price is definitely fair for entry.
Was crazy busy with a NB schools event, but friendly efficient clean little zoo. Decent variety of animals.
Love the beavers and otters! The Zoo has a nice selection of animals to enjoy. Wish they had more.
Several things closed due to covid, but still had a nice time.

We went to watch a wrestling match was surprised to find a small carnival. The park is family and pet friendly. There is free parking at the zoo. I got my steps in that day. Had a nice outing.
Small but nice Community sized Zoo. Based on artwork in the zoo it looks like they plan on expanding the size of the place. Wood definitely go back in the future if this expansion occurs. Only real flaw was lack of branded merchandise in the gift shop. No magnet, Christmas ornament, nothing that said the zoo's name on it. Just generic plush animals.
Staff was friendly, animals looked to be taken care of, zoo looked clean. I just always feel so sad for the animals yet I understand they probably would not survived the wild.
Nostalgic for sure, remember coming as a child. Small zoo can make it around in a an hour or so. Some of the habitats needed work and some of the pens are really small. I felt bad for some of the animals.
Great Zoo to take your grandchildren and children to wonderful staff very informative really clean animals are all very well taken care of actually glad to be a year-long member go renew my membership every year

Oldie but Goodie!! Old and kinda scary on the outside, but very updated and nice on the inside. A cool variety of animals big and small in species appropriate exhibits, including the indoor rainforest and reefs exhibit, which is awesome! The indoor rainforest and reefs exhibit has 4 rainforest exhibits with mammals, reptiles, birds, and fish, all living together in natural and beautiful floor to ceiling habitats, and on the other side of the room there's 6 tanks with a nice assortment of fish in them and a touch pool. In all this zoo is very nice and I think underrated. Also the 2 Asian Elephants they have are not in a bad place!(as some animal activists have said) They are elderly which makes them look skinny and they could never be taken from their home where they've lived for almost their entire lives. When we were there they got spooked by a truck and their caretakers came running to comfort them and calm them down, it was proof that they need stay there until they pass away. They also have a big area with toys and enrichment if they want it!
Fun and small great for little kids and adults who can't walk long distance.
One of the wonderful Zoo-place in MA-RI area in terms of spacious, clean, number of animals and affordable price
You gotta say hi to the Elephants. Its a small Zoo easy to walk through in 1 hour with older kids. Plenty of thing for younger kids to see and do.

Perfect for younger kids. Has a good variety of animals. Some exhibits closed or hard to see animals due to Covid-19 and the procedures in place but still a great place to spend a couple hours at out of the house.
I had such an amazing time! Luv Emily the elephant. Saw the bald eagles, otters, seals, and even the bear! The cayote was so beautiful. And the bobcats. Just a great day!

Lovely small zoo that provides healthy stimulating care for the animals! Enclosures are very well kept with lots of therapeutic toys in them! Wonderful size zoo for families wit small children!
Great place in the heart of the city. Great place to take the family.

My kids 3,5 and 8 had a blast. The animals looked well cared for, the park was well maintained and staff was attentive. It was not that busy as it had rained earlier in the day. Overall a great value for a young family.
Small zoo but priced accordingly. Neat little getaway from the beaches. You can get really close to the animals too!
Beautiful and peaceful zoo with well cared for animals. We loved our 3 hour visit!
It's a small zoo, but a fun outing for a couple of hours. The Toe Jam Puppet bands plays there, for little kids. I forget what days, bit it's worth looking in to. The otters were funny to watch ????
Such a great way to spend a couple of hours. It's not massive, but is very easy to get through the whole place. They are working on expanding though, which will be great. Our 4yo loved the train ride around the zoo and the carousel. We also happened to be there in October, and he loved the Halloween decor throughout, especially the small maze they setup for younger kids.
Great small zoo. Take your yourself and your kids. Fantastic staff. Animals range from fish to elephants and lots in between. They also have overnight programs for groups, spend the night at the Zoo!

This zoo has come a long way. Very nicely landscaped, it has plenty of exhibits for the size. Very clean, and all of the animals seem well cared for. Nice picnic area. Central bathroom.
What a nice little gem of a zoo. Fair admission price and $2 per person for an electric mini train ride, sweet! Loved the Otters. First time ever seeing an American Eagle, a Beaver, and a Cougar up close. Not all in the same enclosure or that would have really been an unforgettable show. A little understaffed, the guy running the mini train was also in charge of operating the carousel.
Took our Granddaughter there today, same great place we took our kids too.
Great for a small zoo. Perfect for children as the walk isn't too long or too short. Plenty to do, whether you're feeding the ducks, riding the carousel, checking out the farm area or just enjoying the small array of animals.
Great family activity will forever be Going to the Zoo.
Nice clean zoo, on the smaller side. You can see everything in about 1-1.5 hours. Bathrooms are always clean and they have a cafe to buy food which is reasonably priced. You can also bring in your own food and have a picnic lunch. Train ride and carousel for kids is a nice addition to this zoo and there is also an imaginative outdoor play area for children.
Just went to the park but loving taking my kids to the zoo
This zoo is the best part of New Bedford. It should be treasured. It's a great place to bring a kid and it's cheap if you live in the city. They don't have a ton of animals but that's okay. They are always trying to fix up the exhibits and make life for the animals they do have, better.
Really nice little zoo with a friendly staff and good selection of animals for the price. The carousel is fun for younger kids and the small train that runs through the premises is also okay, despite long lines/waiting with wee ones. Our favs were the bison, the bears, the seals and the elephants. The coyote was cool but needed a friend.
Nice little zoo, reasonably priced, and easily accessible.
My wifey took me here and I loved it beautiful spot for any couple or even for yourself..
It was a great small zoo, it was around 80° today so we weren't able to see much but the animals we did see were amazing and the staff were the best, I'd not be able to recommend the place enough for those who love to see animals

Nice zoo, admission is nicely priced at $6 considering the zoo is pretty small. There's a carousel and train ride to keep smaller kids occupied that is $2, so very cheap. You can see everything in the zoo in a little over an hour, but the exhibits are very nice. Horses, elephants, harbor seals, mountain lions are some of the few that are there. There are plenty of bathrooms and vending machines, so there's no long walks to try and find one. The aquarium area has a touch pool to feel some of the animals like starfish and dogfish, and all the staff are very knowledgeable and friendly, and willing to answer questions about the animals.
We love buttonwood park zoo! I’ve taken my kids here for the past 5ish years and every time it’s always special. We came Monday to see the Toe Jam Puppet Band at 11:30 (AMAZING guys! Thank you for all you do for the kids!!) and upon arrival, my son immediately fell running and skinned his elbow/knee. I saw a passing zoo employee & asked if they had first aid. The employee, Kyle, took us back to the first aid area, helped me clean up my sons scrapes and helped calm him down by introducing him to Compass (the office pigeon who wears a diaper) so my son totally forgot about his boo-boos. Thank you Kyle!!! The staff here is awesome, the animals are always well taken care of & the train ride can’t be missed. We will keep coming back.

Great zoo, perfect for family time and birthdays party’s.
Well maintained park/zoo with enough to see and do for the kids.
Biggest little zoo I've been to in years. My son loved it.
Even with COVID 19 restrictions, it was a very nice visit. Not too many people, staff was very friendly.
It's a nice small Zoo. Easy to go through in short time. The kids love the elephants, red panda, otters and aquarium section. they also really enjoy the train ride. Just wished the carousel ride was a little longer. And we miss all the farm animals. The staff is friendly and answers questions about the animals. I've been coming here since i was a kid and now I take my kids.
August 2020... You must purchase timed entry tickets prior to arrival. The zoo has created a one way traffic pattern that makes a large loop around the zoo. We found that just about everyone followed this. Masks are required and most adults and some kids were able to abide by this. We felt safe during our time. We looped around twice, got the opportunity to see everything. The kids play area near the barn was open but we skipped this as it becomes a little more crowded and lots of small kids without masks. They had outdoor grab and go food options and even the store had a small area outside. Enjoy!!

One of the best zoos ever!! As an animal lover and animal care professional, I've been to Zoological institutions from Miami to San Diego and everywhere in-between; and this zoo is hands down my absolute favorite. The animals are healthy and the exhibits are beautiful. The staff is friendly and absolutely dedicated to the well-being and enrichment of every individual creature in their care. You can see it in the way the animals are bright and curious even with guests they've never met! They will interact and exhibit species specific behaviors especially if you visit early in the day! Truly an amazing gift to the community!
I always loved Buttonwood Park. Whenever I want to just park and relax, I always want to go to Buttonwood Park. Specially the pond area. I'm so very disappointed of how our once a beautiful pond are now a total mess! Even all the birds that we're once there, they're no longer there or they've chosen to go to the other side of the pond. The grass are long! There are very little beautiful flowers left around. With all the work that had been done to beautified New Bedford, I'm very proud to say, I live in New Bedford! Buttonwood Park, specially the pond area are in so badly need of extensive renovation! Truly Cares!
The animals are so cute!!! We loved the seals especially. Please consider adopting (sponsoring) a zoo animal to help fund it! Would love to come back after quarantine to see the full zoo in action! Right now most of the animals on display are mammals, the fish, amphibians, etc are closed off for safety reasons.

The animals are so cute! I love them! The jellyfish are interesting, and the fish display is very nice!
Trick or treat for the younger set is awesome! We'll be back. I'd say under 6yrs old overall with or without the extra Halloween tables. A small, intimate zoo not too overwhelming.
I arrived close to closing time, which equates dinner time for most of the animals here. The Covid protocols in place were clearly defined and to keep the visitors AND animals safe. Big thumbs up for the job that the staff and volunteers do in this small beautiful treasure in the middle of the city. I was super impressed with the enrichment toys each habitat had and the volunteers were so sweet about answering my multiple questions. There was a 1st birthday party going on and the staff were super diligent about cleaning up in order to ensure AGAIN the safety of the animals. Awesome job!!

I love taking walks around Buttonwood Park, but as a Zoo it is just ok. It is a nice, pretty inexpensive activity and walk for young children but they don't have a ton of exhibits so all in all it takes about an hour or so to see everything so it is for sure not a full day activity!

I had good time with my lil girl. Very enjoyable.
It is a great little zoo. Just enough especially for the younger kids. We go often with our 3 year old grandson.
We visited as part of Free Fun Friday. What a pleasant surprise! It isn't a large place and I had prepared myself for a huge crowd. The way it is designed the crowd was spread out and seemed much smaller than it was. There were a number of interesting animals. My favorite was the elephants. We spent a few minutes chatting with one of the keepers and learned quite a bit. There are a good number of tables around to have your picnic lunch.

Nicely landscaped with a great menagerie of animals. The elephants Emily and Ruth have a huge enclosure with lots of visual and tactile stimuli. The new red panda family is a must-see, as are the New World monkeys. Their Boo at the Zoo event is the highlight of the Halloween season for Southcoast families.
I don’t think this city should continue to operate this zoo. They seem to not have the funds to properly care for these animals. The animals are clearly miserable in their small confined spaces.
I just cannot believe there's a whole zoo in the middle of New Bedford. Many animals including some of the oldest elephants around here! Will be going again next time I'm in town!!

Went on a field trip with my sons kindergarten class Perfect zoo for younger kids, not to big but still lots to see and do. Great play area, clean bathrooms, and a good cafeteria. They even have a train and merry go round to ride! We had a wonderful time.
My kids love this zoo. My son's favorite is the Red Pandas. Zookeepers are nice and full of fun facts about the animals .
We love buttonwood zoo and have been members for years. It's perfect for younger children, but our almost 10, and 7 year olds love it too!

Just a hidden gem, a take everybody should see. Just the right size for young family's. Very kid friendly not a lot of walking between animals
Wonderful small / medium size zoo. Super natural playground for kids of all ages.
Should be called Buttonwood Farm. Very small and limited animals. But perfect for a day trip with little ones 10 and under.
Great zoo and a lot of fun. Check them out for a fun afternoon!
Although one of the smaller Zoos in the area its a great place to go with the young ones and get them out of the house. They have a decent array of animals or all kinds for the kids to see. Recently went there this past week and I don't know if the stars aligned but all the animals were out and about interacting with all the visitors. Especially the otters they would see people coming and run up to the window and stand on their legs and look at you basically saying Hi. It was really awesome to see and my 1 year old loved it also!
The zoo has gotten better every year especially this past summer they have added a lot of new exhibits to see. Very nice zoo and a smaller area for sure. Definitely check out the Asian elephants.

Such am awesome place to take your kids..worth every penny.
a crying shame about the elephants. they don't get along, live most of the time in a tiny space in the barn. they need to be freed to a warmer climate and sanctuary. they don't belong in MA for a brief "entertainment" for humans. saddest sight ever!
Love this little zoo. Great prices wonderful staff and some well taken care of animals. Recently went to red, white, and brew and it was an amazing event! I am excited for their long term plans of slow remodels and improvements.
Very nice... my kids loved the little Choo Choo train that gives you a tour

Great luttle zoo convenient to rt 140. Easy walk around central pen and eatery. Have some wild cats, bears, rainforest and fish. Elephant and red panda was a big draw. Not bad cost of admission either.

Loved it ! Great for little kids ! Was not over crowded & just big enough with enough animals for them. Also had mini train & carousel all can ride for $2. Clean bathrooms & cafeteria too.
Animals looked miserable. Theyre cooped up in tiny cages and a lot of them are by their selves. The cougars, bobcats and coyote were just doing laps on the perimeter of the cages. You can see the worn tracks right along the cages. Don't support zoos.
Wonderful small zoo. Our favorites are the Red pandas, but loved seeing all your animals.
It's December, the zoo is fairly quiet. Some of the animals went somewhere warm for the winter. The others stayed here and kept us entertained. The Park is clean and well maintained. The staff is very friendly. It was a good visit. My daughter and I had a good time.
Great little zoo. Loads of parking. Easy access. During covid, there is a one way walking path, but you can circle as much as you want. Wide variety of animals. Great prices. The Zoo always has something going and utilizes social media. We buy a membership yearly.
My family and friends had a birthday party at Buttonwood Park for a 1 year old and a 7 year old. What a great time! The kids loved riding on the train and carousel! The party room was set up really cute and it was zoo themed. Everyone enjoyed walking around to see all the animals and the aquarium. A great time was had by all. I would strongly recommend having children's birthday parties here. The staff were all so helpful with drinks and pizza! They made sure all the tables had coloring pages and crayons and were very attentive. Again, I definitely love having parties there!
There are many different animals from all over the world. It isn't a lot of walking either. Great for taking young and old for a couple of hours. The staff are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Great attractions, staff was friendly, and the zoo was empty. Good experience all around.

This is a great spot to bring younger kids. I brought my two four year olds here this weekend for an Easter egg hunt that they were holding for Easter. it was a really cute thing that got the kids outside and excited gave him a little bit of candy. We did the same thing on Halloween for their boo at the zoo event. The kids always have a ball we always get great photos of them and when they come home they want to learn more about animals and how to protect them. As far as for families I can't recommend this place highly enough.
Awesome day! Very clean and friendly! We will definitely be back!
So many beautiful creatures! Very clean, but if you want ice cream i recommend going somewhere after because its $4.50 so a tiny cup of ice cream! but apart from that, its a great place for kids
The zoo keepers are very knowledgeable and were ready to answer all our questions. It's a pity covid has decreased the amount of attractions to see but it was exciting to see Emily and ruth (elephants). Hopefully next time the kids will be able to go on the train ride around the zoo. ????

It was heartbreaking to see how the animals are treated. They just look sad and mistreated. The elephants are so dry, with lack of water. Animals confined in their tiny spaces, without consideration of where their originally from. I wish someone would do something about it.
