We have all the information of people like you who are consuming the products and services of Elk Island National Park (Zoo) in the area close to Banff (Canada).
Right now this firm gets a score of 4.7 stars out of 5 and the score was based on 127 reviews.
As you can see it has an average rating is virtually the best one, and it is founded on a very high number of opinions, so we can think that the assessment is quite reliable. If many people have bothered to rate when they've done well with the business, is that it works.
You know that we do not usually stop to place feddbacks when they are positive and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or incidence...
This Zoo corresponds to the category of National park.
Loved our first visit to the Park. Many different trail options. Will definitely be back soon.
Great place to go for a walk, see some wildlife, or just chill out by the beach, only downside is there's no places to buy food on site
Beautiful scenery, lots of wild life and excellent trails
As per their website, this is a great place for hiking, wildlife viewing and cycling. A visit to this large park is not complete without viewing the bison. This nearly extinct animals have been preserved in this park and the most popular spot where to view them is thru the Bison Loop Road - just a 3 to 5 minutes' drive from the Visitor Center. While at Astotin Lake, we were able to hike thru the Living Waters Boardwalk - a short 30 minutes' walk from where we had our picnic lunch. Climbing thru a short wooden stairway, we were then treated to an above view of the lake (complete with 2 red lounge chairs).
If you want to see the bison and other animals you need to visit at dawn or dusk. The bison are not docile timid animals.. do not get out of your car and walk towards them.
Elk Island is filled with adventures and animals. One of my favourite parks in Alberta! I love the fact they have fire and grill pits EVERYWHERE . It's so awesome you can picnic in so many places and how it is integrated In the park. Run very smoothly in my opinion based on my experience when I went. April 28th-29th/2021
Beautiful recreational place. If you’re at Edmonton,Alberta, you have to see elk island national park.
20 min from Edmonton, huge Park, wonderfull for Bisont photos and physical trainning
Amazingly calm and beautiful park and best part is that this place is just 40 mins from downtown edmonton
I love to visit this place often. Being a nature lover their is a lot to see and absorb. Group of bisons in Bison loop, elks, huge wetland boardwalk, largr varity of plankton and algaes, open theater, hiking, night stars seeking, camping, boating, etc. There is lot more to do with family and friends and best thing is it takes only 30 mins drive from Edmonton to go to elk island via car. If you have extra time you must visit the nearby historic Ukrainian village which is just few kilometers away from elk island national park. I will highly recommend this place if you are a nature lover.
Beautiful, saw some buffalo. But too many mosquitoes. Make sure you carry bug spray.
Very good place to see Bison and Elks in their natural habitat...and so close to Edmonton
Hiked Shirley Trail. Good hike, took about 3 hours. Nice and quiet in spots. Saw bison contently grazing in a meadow.
Took the kids on a 12 km hike and we had a great time. The price of admission for the family was reasonable. The staff were really helpful and pointed out a really good route. The saddest part was that, on a summer weekend on a nice day we didn't meet anyone else on the trail.
Staff was super helpful when a very chill bison decided to have a nap on the trail, trapping us 15 km into the hike. We called and were given several options on how to deal with this and manage to bush whack out safely, without disturbing our friend. (see brown splotch in photo)
Saw several Bison, the gate attendant was friendly, and a map is provided with safety tips for the animals you may encounter. There are well kept bathrooms available, and places for camp fires, and more. There are also two large gazebo (covered ) areas with picnic tables near the large lake. It was a good outing with the family.
Best place to see bisons so close. Near to Edmonton city. Should not be missed
Never been before but totally awe struck on this place. What a beautiful majestic environment. Bison(Buffalo). Roaming free 30-40 feet from you absolutely breathe taking. It was really busy, plus you have to pay a fee to enter per car load. But well worth every penny. Can't wait to go back!
Perfect getaway place near edmonton❤️ Must visit if you want to see bisons ????
Family drive to Elk island, is highly recommended. We took a long walk to look for animals that we ended up finding near the road. It's a must though to walk around the park and see the wild life. At one stop we saw few fireplaces that I think is a awesome idea to finish your day in the park after the walk. Unfortunately I didn't know beforehand so we had no hot cocoa or marshmallows, which had been a great way to end the walk in the forest.
A wonderful place for a short weekend trip. We saw bisons, beavers, chipmunks and other wild animals. Astonin lake is gorgeous in all seasons. Lots of trails and bbq places.
More humans than other animals but nevertheless the nature is wonderful especial the beevers.
No matter what time of the year or time of day, this is a great place to visit! So many beautiful views and lots of wildlife.
Awesome day,not busy, can enjoy your evening
I had a great time at this park. It’s possible to see wildlife through hikes and driving. Personally we only saw foot prints and poop on the Hayburger hike though. We went in August 2021, it was a cool rainy day. Wildlife sighting is best at dusk at dawn so we got there at 8am (sunrise was at 6am). We saw tons of bison from the car, about 7 in the first 30 min. Then in the next two hours we saw 4 more, there was a higher concentration near the bison loop which is a 5 min driving loop to view bison close to the visitor centre. The boardwalk trail near the campgrounds was also great, we saw an elk or deer across the pond. There was ample parking even on a Saturday.
Beautiful and natural, but needs more roadways, very little of the park can be seen by people who use walkers and canes.
Gorgeous park. Came here for sunset and stargazing and would highly recommend!
Great place to get out in God's creation. Fresh air, wildlife, hiking trails.
Elk Island National Park is a national park in Alberta, Canada, that played an important part in the conservation of the Plains bison. The park is administered by the Parks Canada Agency. This "island of conservation" is 35 km (22 mi) east of Edmonton, along the Yellowhead Highway, which goes through the park. It is Canada's eighth smallest in area but largest fully enclosed national park, with an area of 194 km2 (75 sq mi).
Best times to see Bison are around 9-11am just be careful when driving because they are everywhere. Great place for camping, hiking and having some good food with the family.
Absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful trails, well maintained and don’t even get me started on the wildlife. Bring yourself some bear spray just in case. Because you might get a little close and you never know what’s around the corner
My kids they love this place we enjoyed
It's a beautiful, well-maintained National Park. If you are from central Alberta this park is scenically very much like what you'd expect. Lots of aspen woods, native prairie and ponds/lakes. We saw some bison and enjoyed learning more about them, elk, and beaver in a small outdoor presentation. The playground area was the most busy. It is once again well maintained and a beautiful place for a picnic.
Worth the money. Lots of LONG walking trails. Lots to look at even just driving. Saw a few buffalo, tons of ducks.
Nice hiking trails and an okay lake. The day we went it had Blue Algae and beware of leeches but you can't control nature. Way less people on Wednesday I probably only saw 20 people in the park, great for social distancing. Astaton Beach is a good place to picnic and chill with friends. $8 adult admission was worth it :D
this is such a beautiful place with so much nature to enjoy. me and my boyfriend rented a kayak on astotin lake, walked along trails, saw beavers, multiple bison and a deer. highly recommend!
My favourite place to visit once moving to Edmonton ????
Lots to explore by foot, Dawn or dusk are best time to spot animals.
Beautiful little nature space! Peaceful and quite. Trails were muddy in some areas but very wide, clearly marked and rather busy. Nice little camping area with free wood provided is a plus too! Saw some bison, prairie chickens, loons and geese.
There are many different species of birds living in Elk Island National Park that you will not find in the city. Of course there are Bison, Beavers, Muskrats, and other notable wildlife but these animals are active and observable during the early morning or the later evening (Golden Hour) when it cools down. It is a good place to shoot (photography) Wild animals that can not be found in the city. It is also a dark night reserve (4 on the Bortle Scale) meaning it’s a great place to escape the light pollution and do Astrophotography. You can make out the faint Milky Way stretching across the night sky and thousands of stars. The living waters boardwalk is my favourite spot to shoot dragonflies, beavers, and muskrats. I always wear bells so that I do not startle and thus anger any animals by my presence. It’s my understanding that as long as you maintain a good distance from the Bison - you’ll be safe. I’ve heard most people who do get hurt by the Bison got too close trying to get that ‘selfie with a Bison’ shot. It’s all explained on the Elk Island website. Of course this is a National Park, thus no drones, not even kite flying is technically allowed. The staff are friendly and informative. There are a number of bathroom facilities but to explore the whole park - you’ll need a car. If your thinking you can just ride your bicycle - it’s a big big park. Tip - bring mosquito repellent - I always forget. There’s natural trails and paved trails to enjoy. Some easy others I assume may be quite difficult. Last night I paid $15.80 for two people, the time before I remember $15 per person. Off season perhaps? Lots of parking. You will need a whole day at least to appreciate the park.
I have seldom seen a elk at this park, but the wildlife sightings have been anything but disappointing there. I have seen big herds of bison. Plains bison on the north side of hwy 16 and wood bison on the south. I have also seen moose, deer, coyote, the occasional elk, beaver, muskrat, and many, many different birds. If birding is your thing, then definably check out Elk Island. There are some great hikes, both short and long. I have done them all. Also they can be cross-country skied or "snowshoed" in the winter. Canoeing at Lake Astotin is also great for viewing migratory birds, beaver, and the occasional moose.
Beautiful park with some great trails. Trails were a bit mucky the farther you went into the bush but that just added to the fun! Lots of gorgeous views throughout the trails. The picnic areas are well maintained & the washrooms before the gate are spacious & clean! Can't wait for our next visit & check out more trails.
Went to Astotin Lake area on the weekend. The bathrooms were stocked and clean and the playground was wonderful. The roads through the park were in good shape as well. Signage makes navigating the park very simple as well. I have loved Elk Island since I was a child, and still do!
A lifetime of adventure for you and your family at Elk Island National Park
Nice drive to see the Bison and so close to home. The scenery is amazing, with walking trails. They usually have canoe and kayak rentals. It appeared there were closed this year do to COVID-19. Great place for a little get away.
We went on the weekend for an entire day, haven't seen a single animal :( we went up and down, all the lakes, park is very small, also very crowded. If you're anywhere south of Red Deer, skip this one. You're better off going to Jasper or Banff, you bump into wildlife on people's lawns lol sorry, but not worth the trip
What a great place to spend a day! Brings together the wild, the beach, the hike trails and kids playgrounds altogether. Remember to take the loop road when you get there for to say hi to the bisons, not to mention keeping your distance, then hit the road to get to Astotin Lake for a barbecue setup and where kids can play at the play ground or at the field there. Hike lovers remember to checkout the lakeside trails too!
Amazing views, the playpark for the kids was a huge hit, and the washrooms by the Astotin beach were very nice and clean. For such a low cost this park is amazing and I can't wait to go back at a time when having fires in the provided fire pits is allowed, and to hike more of the many trails! And to top my families fantastic day visit there, we finished with the bison loop and got to see SO MANY BISON! ????
Great place to go! Playground there and bathrooms with showers. It’s close to Edmonton and lots of wildlife. Lots of bison, elks, lots of beavers and deer. Amazing landscape!
I wish the shoulders were a little bit wider for road cyclists but what are you going to do? Pretty sure the park wasn't designed for that but an upgrade would be nice.
Really unique and enchanting national park. A bit out of the way if your down south but was so worth it! Fingers crossed you'll get lucky and spot bison, beaver or one of the tons of interesting bird species. Tons of really nice, tucked away picnic spots for families as well.
Well worth the short drive from Edmonton - not disappointed at all - wasn’t crowded at all - gate staff were so helpful and knowledgeable- it was our first time going to Elk Island - it didn’t take long to find the Bison - I saw so much wildlife - birds galore! so glad we discovered it this tear and we will be back soon now that we have a yearly parks pass - or at least I hope it works for Jasper and Elk Island ?? Thanks for a fabulous experience Parks Canada ????????
Love to do biking, camping and boating, you found the right place, that is elk island national park. It has long bike trails, camping ground near every lake ( biggest one is in Astotin lake camp ground) (most picturesque one is west of oster lake camping ground) and astotin lake for real boating delight. Often viewed animals are bison and sometimes elk. But please don’t disturb wild animals as it can compromise your or animals safety and have legal implications as well.
Just a little drive from Edmonton. You can see bisons, forests and lakes with beautiful scenery
Parked at the bottom before the gate , I've a yearly pass for the parks, so I pulled my road bike out of the box on my truck and headed on "up" as had imagined it. Ground out the kms to the "top" as I had thought of it. Took a few photos, all the while looking forward to the free ride down. Then it hit me, a full and hot wind in my face . I laughed but the ride is not just up n down. The vehicles on the road gave me plenty of space but here's a cyclist view... Go past me, don't hover, get through, give me loads of space. I drive a great big pickup too. It's all good.
Loved this park! The buffalo and the beaches were incredible! All levels of hikes and first class day use facilities. Will go back for sure!
Beautiful location just outside Edmonton, there's so much interesting wild life and terrain to explore. The water quality of the lake isn't amazing, but considering it's proximity to Edmonton, it's one of the easiest ways to enjoy an Albertan "Day at the beach". Sylvan Lake is superior if you enjoy swimming and watercraft, but if you prefer biking trails, exploration, hiking and wild life observation, this place is one of the best I know.
Such a wonderful park with so many amazing trails for various fitness levels. Great amenities and service as well. Saw a small beaver today on a walk with my kids- another Elk Island memory they'll never forget.
Beautiful park. Saw lots of bison, birds and beavers. Visited lake Antolin, and the boardwalk. Lake is perfect for kayaking. Nice beach. Went in the evening and there weren't many people or bugs.
I love Elk Island Park. So nice to have a national park so close to the city. Well maintained with a new boardwalk that takes you on the lake. We take our family there for hikes and animal tracking and exploring. Lots of fun outdoors.
Lots to do. The lake looks awesome for paddle boating but the beach needed to be cleaned up, lots of reeds. The kids didn't even want to go in.
No amount of bug spray can accommodate the mosquitoes here in the summer but it is a nice place to go for a paddle on the lake.
Great trails. Great wildlife. Beaches are nice. Wonderful place to see stars and northern lights.
Great place close to Edmonton. Did a mountain bike a trail run and a paddle. The lake definitely had a lot of algae growth and I wouldn't recommend swimming but everything else was good.
Beautiful area, great spot to go for a hike or drive around the park. Expect to see bison, multiple times along the drive to the lakes. They will even stop you in your path so be patient and pull out the camera.
Beautifully Maintained. I am a big fan of the park and enjoy the trails very much. I waked the Shirley Lake Trail with my life-long friend, enjoying the spectacular fall colours and the wide trails of the interior of the park. Always be careful and respectful around the wildlife, we spotted some buffalo at the campground on the shore of Oster Lake, we gave them their space and made sure they knew we were there. Give yourself plenty of time to stop and enjoy the views and wildlife you will encounter. This trail in particular is not extreme, but it is also not flat with occasional rolling hills to climb, it will take you some time to complete the circuit. It took us 3 1/2 hours at a steady pace, with some stops along the way. It is well worth the time.
Lots of hiking trails. Some paved, but most are gravel. We’ve been on multiple of these hiking trails and would typically recommend a hat/toque/muffs if the weather is going to be 10 degrees or less...there’s a decent amount of wind across the water and can be a bit frigid. There are quite a few camping sites for tents and a few for RV. Be aware though, Buffalo can wander throughout the campground and we were woken up to one about 10 feet from our vehicle. Fall colours are stunning and we’ve taken many photos. If possible, take the little buffalo ring road because they can get so close. Also be aware that parking can become tight as groups like to take motorcycles or other vehicles for group photos. Leave early if you want to experience a quieter hike or drive!
Very nice park and beach but we couldn't enjoy that because of Covid19. Very crowded and no social distancing. People don't care neither staff. Most of the trails were close due to Covid19. Trails( number) 5,6,7,10 and 11 were open. People are not even using hand sanitizer to use washrooms. At least we saw one bison near bison loop road. I hope this review helped people plan there trip accordingly. Stay safe and healthy!
Park could use some upgrades in some areas. Other than that, nice spot to get out of the city and enjoy nature any time of year.
Great get away under 1 hour away from Edmonton. Hidden gem with nice still waters. The camping places is surrounded by scenic hikes in the forest. Saw a huge Bison in the park. Washroom facilities with no showers are available. I love the trails, the sunset and beautiful nature of this National park.
Very friendly staff and lots of beautiful locations. The kids love it!
love it here I come often only hakf hour east of Edmonton, great for whole family.Keep distance from wild animals!
The most Amazing place. This was my playground for Winter. I've seen so many things and each time is completely different. From Bison to Moose, Deer, Elk and Coyotes. Also Wonderful sightings of the smaller critters such as Squirrels, a baby Beaver, a very cool Muskrat to a huge Mink, the array of Birdlife is also tip top. There are many, many trails to walk, each is different and catering for all walking levels. In Winter you can hire Snowshoes and in Summer you can hire a Canoe and take to the waters. It's also worth bringing your own food and making a fire, there are many facilities to do so. All in all a Photographers dream. The Sunsets here are Stunning, people also use Bison Loop for some Night Skywatching, I myself watched a Lunar Eclipse near here which was Stunning!! Bring your Telescope or join one of the many events they do for Astronomy in the Summer, where you can Camp all night and watch the Aurora dance across the Skies. If you're driving the road looking for animals I recommend going about 40kmph as it's a great speed to spy something hiding in the Trees! Also don't speed, far too many people do and it's dangerous. Go have some fun I can't recommend it enough!
Awesome place for hanging out with family, friends, or dates. Dark Sky preserve and awesome star gazing. Astotin Theatre has movies about bison and interpretive talks a few times a day during the summer. The hiking is great! We did the Shoreline Trail which isn't especially exciting but super relaxing with some nice views of Astotin Lake. Be careful where you step--there is lot of bison patties about. Bring your bug spray and sunscreen!
Get up close to bison and other wildlife, what an incredibly unique experience. Best to go early or late to miss the lineups which can kill the vibe a bit
Did the Tawayik Trail Hike which was beautiful. We walked through densely wooded areas and plains. Then we saw a herd of bison! It can be hard at times to know where the trail is going because it sometimes isn't well marked. Will definitely be back again!
Nice clean good service. Love to visit again and again, So many activities to do here
Great place to get away enough to see some stars and northern lights even
Have been coming here for many, many years and it is always a pleasure. We discover new things every time we come. Lots to see and do and many paths to walk. Activity Center was open. Can easily spend a day enjoying the park. Prefer going through the week when it is not quite as busy.
the end of autumn... I couldn't say hello to Elk and instead I said hello to Bison. Oct. 7th & 12th 2020 @ Elk Island National Park
Amazing we walked, there are beautiful walk ways. we saw a Bison, it was just walking on the road. there is swimming area if you want. also there is canoeing (to rent is 15$ per person.) there is a theatre with taxidermy animals. so real. we had the best weekend ever. i am so going back.
We made a quick stop on our way back to Regina and we're lucky to see some Buffalo and waterfowl. It's a beautiful park with trails and lakes. It's worth the stop.
The weather was perfect, and the scenery was stunning. We saw a Fox and two Bison, and friends saw some Elk. There were ample picnic tables where we were, and they accommodated the large numbers of families. They have clean washrooms, plenty of parking and, by all accounts, some very good hiking trails. There were people sailing and canoeing on the large lake. Although we only visited one area, the park is large with other sites to visit. Would we go again, absolutely.
Beautiful park. Drove past it all my life was not disappointed when we actually went. Has a hidden gem quality.
Worth the visit. Enjoy a nice sunset walk in the trails, picnic in the green areas or kayak the lake. You'll surely see some bisons and have a good time. Try camping as well
Good place if you want to pass some time … but I think Government is wasting alot of money here , there could be more beautiful and good places managed with the money Gov spends on it
Huge area to walk and hike around and potentially seeing bisons roaming around! You have to pay a fee to enter the park but it’s worth it!
Haven't fully explored the park yet, but with the peaceful and vibrant wildlife—diving beavers, wading baby ducklings, dangerous algae, prancing deer, bear sightings, the park is truly a haven both for animal lovers and animals. Many fun tours and activities the park offers during the summer and holidays. The camping grounds are really limited, which is a bummer. Gonna head for the bike trails next week, rent some boats to cruise the lake, and make some s'mores. Can be done in a day's visit. Let's go and check 'em out!
Beautiful place to go for a date or just to hangout with your friends and family. If you go during the week it's more likely to find bison in the highway and also more wildlife in the trails. Trail #2 is closed until further news. I went twice this month and it was still closed, maybe repairs?
This is the best place near Edmonton for a quick reset. Every time I visit here I explore something new. Sunset in the austotin lake is really amazing. I love driving through bison loop every time I visit here to spot any free roaming bison. Elk island is also the best place to watch night sky attractions like aurora and meteor showers as it is a dark sky preserve.
Best season to go hiking and kayaking, and to spot bison!!????????????
Good place for Hiking, cycling, boating . As for seeing bison, seems morning or evening is best time as we only saw few around noon under sunlight near south entrance. Called bison loop where you just drive along the trail like safari.
Sweet Sweet Sweet! And Bring Your BUG SPRAY if you are hiking. BUG SPRAY is needed on those hikes through Wet Marsh Land, so many Mosquitos. We took a bunch of Bites for Team Human today. Also Bison, and lots of Birds. The Elk seem to be Hiding. Thank you National Government for making this a Park in 1906.
Excellent place for family walks
The daily rate is only $7.80... Go immerse yourself in the best part of nature only minutes outside of Edmonton! You can hike on trails, go swimming, go to the Park and see ANIMALS!
Very nice park with lots and lots of wildlife to see. Great picnicking places to enjoy with the families! Nice sandy beach but I wouldn't recommend swimming in the water. But there is canoeing rentals that would be fun to try next time we are out.
Lots of animals to see such as bison and beavers. RV camping is interesting but nice once you settle in. The lake is wonderful and the trails around are awesome. Highly recommend coming to camp or making a day trip.
You're going to see some buffalo, maybe even a wolf or three, deer, or even a black bear. Definitely worth the trip, you can canoe at Astotin, or hike around some other lakes, and even camo by them.
Dog sledding and campfires make for a great day with just a 20ish minute drive outside of Edmonton! Lots of lake and trails to explore.
If ever wanted 2 get away for a day I totally recommend Elk Island was pretty amazing and pretty cool experience 2 be so close 2 the bison ???? great hiking and pretty cool spots 2 just hang out and sit by the water ????
It's fun and you see a lot of cool animals!
Nice place to connect with nature, park is kept very clean
It's a very busy place. Hiking is easy and enjoyable.
Loved this park! The trails are great with a nice variety of different terrain to hike. You could spend 30 mins or 5 hrs doing a hike. Park staff were all friendly and helpful when we had questions. Ample parking at each hiking start point. We spotted the Bison within 5 mins of entering the park. Bring big spray if hiking!!
Beautiful place, great afternoon. You can walk through the trees or sit down by the water. We also saw 3 bisons just walking by the road, we got out of the car to get a closer look.
What a great little gem just an hour outside Edmonton. I always am amazed at how magnificent those bisons are. ???? They brand new interpretation centre is beautiful and the staff is friendly. Good and easy hikes around the park. Multiples trails of moderate length and mostly for beginners.
Great park and a wonderful place to spend a afternoon! Lots of wildlife. Every time I have gone I have seen Elk and Bison.
A beautiful place to picnic, bbq or just relax. I loved it and my family had a great day. We stayed by Astotin lake.
We were lucky enough to see a young bison at the Bison loop. DO NOT go to the Beaver Pond Trailhead. That trail sucks. Surrounded by a bunch of trees and not much of a view. Only saw a small amounts of the pond.
Had a great experience here. Saw tons of elk some of which we got very close to while still in our vehicles as they just happen to he roadside. There are plenty of trails that are accommodating to those who want short or long hikes, and the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. I highly suggest visiting here if you're in Alberta and enjoy seeing wildlife.
I had an amazing experience, camping was very fun there with a lot of things to do. The weather was perfect.the hiking trails had amazing views and were fun. Over all I loved it here and definitely recommend this place.
I try and go here at least once to twice a year. It's really close to Edmonton, inexpensive and there is quite a bit you can do in a day. Lots of hiking, camping, can rent a kayak or canoe, bbq, and just enjoy nature. If you're lucky you may even see a bison, or as we did a herd of close to 100. Highly recommend Elk Island especially if you want to take your family.
A remote location hidden away from the city of Edmonton, nature's paradise. With a feeling of though your located somewhere on Prince Edward Island, you find yourself surrounded by the natural beauty of land and water.
This is our go to place for the warm weather. The trails are always great! Lots of variety and good for kids and dogs. In the winter time you can walk out to the island on Lake Astotin and it was a great adeventure for the kids. Playground is huge and the kids like it! Just remember to bring a mask for the bathrooms.
This place is one of the most beautiful and peaceful place located just outside of all the traffic and lights of the city of Edmonton. I would recommend to go there at night if you are into star gazing because the sky here lights up with uncountable star of our Milky way galaxy. Be careful while visiting as this place is home of various animals and birds and they usually like to greet visitors by standing on the roads or on the sides
Colors off the fall
Though it's the less awww-inducing NP out of ABs five, it has its own little hidden gems. A wonderful place to view wildlife on an early Sunday morning. Wood and plain bison, coyote, mule and white tail deer, elk, moose, black bear, beaver
Elk Island is great for camping and also witnessing Aurora Borealis if you are lucky! There’s an entrance fee, but it’s really affordable. You can also see lots of elks here (obviously!) and Astotin Lake is also great for picnics and walkings as there are trails. A lot of people also bring their kayak, canoes, bikes here, so if you are into those activities, this place is great for you!
What a great place to get away for a day trip! Excellent bike paths and we saw BUFFALOS, lots of them!! We brought a picnic and sat by the lake to enjoy the scenery. I think a glamping trip is in our near future, I would love to see the stars at night by the lake!
Excellent place to go for a day hike or explore the backcountry. Especially for those just getting into backcountry camping.
Fair priced. Plenty of parking and a great place to be the old normal, lots of well maintained paths, fire pits, a phenomenal kids park. As a family we feel reinvigorated and prepared for the next lockdown.
A bison was not there, eventhough a beautiful place.
Beautiful National Park with lots of wild animals sighting. There is facilities for barbecuing, camping, biking and hiking. Excellent scenery., and playground for kids. Ample parking available. However, it can be a hot COVID-19 magnet as there was way too much people hanging around with no masks on their face. Zero social distancing.
If you’re fan of astrophotography, this place is for you. Dark sky are the best. When you could see all those stars which are hard to see at night. If you’re lucky you could see Aurora, milky way, meteor shower, comets, and many more astro events. Bisons and reindeer’s could be seen on the roads or at side. Astontin lake is beautiful and huge. Parking is available. Not much traffic. Small hill and many trails in the area Ideal for camping and pet friendly.
This national park is a lovely place, a great park to watch bison herds.
A lovely day trip today. People out here today seem to be aware of social distancing. So that was nice to see. There's lots of scenic trails some were closed because of algae on the lake, but there was still lots of walking to do and some secluded areas. In the last two or three years they have updated this place and done a really good job. As with any national park you need to pay to go in for the day. About $8 per adult so it's reasonable and they use the money to keep the place looking good.
Love going to this lake for a kayak especially in the early mornings before anyone else. I would say come as early as 730 on long weekend or 830 for regular if you want a camp site. But if you're here for the day a walk or a hike or even a kayak still show up early enough to get a parking spot
We recently spent the day here with our dog doing some of the hikes around the lake. While the mosquitoes were terrible (bring bug spray!) we had a lovely time looking for water fowl, beavers and enjoying this beautiful national park that is so close to Edmonton. We can't wait to visit in the winter as well!
Really enjoyed the natural environment. everything is well kept. A bison just walked by our car. Wonderful experience.
Popular place for a nice hike and encounter wildlife. East of edmonton easy drive. The park have camping ground, day use picnic areas with fire pits, roof covered sitting areas , washrooms everywhere. The hikes are of a different difficulties and length for everyone choice. You can kayak or canoe in the big lake.
This is a great place to hike and enjoy the local natural wonders of the area. EINP offers a wide variety of trails and opportunities to see elk, bison, deer, moose, and a variety of bird species - up close. But, please remember that they still are wild, and respectful distance should be adhered to. Brong you camera (and bug spray in the summer).
We cycled from one end of the park to the other and it was very enjoyable. Well paved roads with slight rolling hills and a generous shoulder for cyclists. Saw lots of bison up close, and a baby beaver. Good amenities for stops when needed.
Recommend arriving early, took us 20 minutes in the car lineup to get through the main gate at 11:00 am, we did the Amisk Wuche Trail..it was 3 km and took us 45 mins...it was hard and the trail is more like a foot path in the woods so would not recommend small children. Bug spray is a must. We still enjoyed our day and glad we did the trail
We love heading out to Elk Island. The trails are awesome, the grounds are well maintained and it's fun to be outdoors there! Astotin has a new playground that awesome. It's a great dayseeing bison on the trip! We are not too happy about being charged for wood now.
Very close drive from Edmonton (about 35 minutes) and easy to spot, I was able to see Bison along the highway close to the park and inside the park. Although I did not go on any trails I still had a nice time admiring the peacefulness of the park.
Great.. I saw a brown bear, bison, and elk from my car just driving down the road. Can’t wait to go hiking!
I just visited trail five and had no time for anything else. Was definitely worth visiting. As a tourist from the U.S, this is one of the most beautiful and enjoyable places to hike. It's easy to go just casually, but you should was some shoes you don't care about and bring mosquito repellent. The entire place has great opportunities to see many different animals and wildlife, you just have to make it early in the day and keep your eyes open.
Great place for wildlife watching in the mornings. Excellent for a road ride, a hike or star glazing.
5 stars given for 5 reasons: 1 The wildlife - buffalo, elk, moose, beaver, birds! 2 The dark sky - this is the best place to view celestial happenings. I've seen meteor showers and northern lights in this pristine dark sky. 3 The hiking - easy wide trails everywhere. Perfect for all levels of hiking. Great for kids. I see lots of people biking the trails too. 4 Camping - who doesn't love camping? 5 Easy get away from Edmonton - anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to get to. Perfect for a quick visit or even a picnic. Trails are marked well. Bathrooms easy to find. Firewood ready to use. Picnic tables are plenty. And if you don't want to get out of the car you don't have to. The drive is great.
It's great having a place like this so close to Edmonton. Relatively quiet, even in the peopled places. We went on a cooler day so the bison were in a paddock feeding area, visible for all to see and watch. Several cinnamon coloured calves, great fun to watch.
It’s beautiful here. And getting to watch Bison walk around and hang out is a great feeling. I tried the trails for the first time and they are well maintained. ????????????????????????????????
Visited few days back on one of the Hottest days , but trees around made awesome shade and was not thay hot there. Not too crowded that day. Got good spot. Enjoyed views , sun , lake, bird watching and spot a biason too. Restrooms were clean in the morning its just on usage how people use it. Enjoyed trip as always
Many beautiful trails and sights a short drive from Edmonton. Very peaceful and well cared for.
Amazing experience beautiful clean place and people are very considerate. You can enjoy the beach and the huge playground, and you can enjoy the beautiful long fall trails with beautiful views perfect for hiking and photography. Spotted a herd of bison which was the cherry on top of a perfect trip. Would highly recommend this place for a family trip, perfect for children to learn and see a lot of nature.
I went to this park during my visit to Edmonton. It was really great place to visit, I have a wonderful time there.
Northern Lights here at Elk Island. Great time. Was around 930-10ish then disappeared. A safe close place next to edmonton
Have never been here before , big mistake on my part such a fantastic park with so much history we will be back every year .... one year later I took a nice easy drive out to the park again, so peaceful and relaxing, great walking trails and amazing scenery, if your stressed take a day trip here its unreal!!!
Fantastic experience whether you are within the park or just outside of it. Bison, topography, nature, walking trails. Truly a great place during the day or night.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. Nightime/Daytime. I love it all. Awesome place to watch northern lights or go with family and have a bbq. Lots of ammenities in Astotin lake such as bathrooms. There is an outdoor shower & lots of firepits. Bird watching or just laying in the grass and relaxing is nice aswell. Stay clear of the bison as sometimes they can be a little aggressive- trying to pet said bison is never a good idea. Ive seen everything run across the road in the years ive been going. Skunks, Porcupines,Coyotes,Deer & Elk. The Bison like to sit on the side of road aswell and can scare the daylights out of you if you arent expecting something the size of a small bus to be sitting on the road. They don't like loud motorcycles (ive found that out first hand) and they are very quick when they want to be (Never when I need to get past. Then they pretend like they are slow animals Lol) Really enjoy this place.
Possibly the best place ever to watch the sunset! Plus it's a dark sky preserve, so if you time it right (or get lucky) and go there on a clear night, you'll see tons of stars!
Elk Island has everything to offer for any family. Hiking and canoe rentals along with nightly interperative shows about local wildlife, and dark sky preservation. Campground is smaller but is quiet and has full showers. Recent upgrades make it very easy to get around and enjoy everything. Make sure you travel the Bison loop early to see the Bison.
a nice charter group. BBQ and Buffalo on the same day.
We went to this place today. It is conveniently located just 40 minutes from the West Edmonton Mall. Worth the visit. They offer free admission for youth (17 and under), prices for adults are around $7, and seniors is about $6. Their pay station was finicky--but it finally accepted my card. We were told they had bison and bison they had! There's a loop where the bison graze. We saw a small heard. I'm unsure how many bison reside in the park--there is a visitors centre, I'm sure they have information like that. There are also a couple lakes within the park, we drove around but you need to hike to the lake. Overall good experience. They need to work on their pay machine. There were also no elk to be seen--dissappointed about that.
Always something to see and just a short trip out of the city. Well worth an evening drive or a day hike
Absolutely amazing! This big guy walked right by my vehicle! If you are in the area I would recommend stopping by.
Beautiful day, hot & sunny. If planning on hiking the trails wear bug spray and closed toed shoes. Water is extra high & lake is currently not swimable.
What a great place to visit in the winter. There are so many hiking trails and places to cross country ski. If that isn't what you enjoy, there is a hill to toboggan, a shelter to build a fire and have a picnic or go for a pleasant drive.
Natural beauty. Lots of trails to.walk and jog around. See the beauty of the Nature very closely. Although can not see lots of birds however still hear the chirps of sparrows. Can see Bison strolling on the road. Road through the Park is fantastic.
Lovely here. We come here during the day and late in the middle of the night to catch the aurora borealis.
Close to the city but is a great place for hiking or kayaking. Love the views and the tables with grills to cook in for picnicking. Good times for the whole family!
A place with multiple tracking options and for me HayBurger is awesome. Beautiful lake view where you can see the whole sky up & down. And drive through in the park is amazing.
Picturesque and peaceful setting. High likelihood of seeing bison in their natural habitat. Would recommend catching a sunset or sunrise at Astotin Lake if possible - great photo opportunities.
Nice drive to Elk Island and we did see a Bison very close to the road. The weather was crazy coming home as the rain turned into huge snowflakes. Love driving around the park but a few of the roads inside the park area were closed. Great place to visit.
It was a lot more fun than we anticipated. Definitely fun for the whole family and beautiful to boot.
I love Elk Island, just visited Edmonton for 6 days and went 4 days ???? As the weather was nice went for a picnic and walks around, enjoyed going kayaking on Astotin Lake. In the evening when visiting we saw so many Bison and a couple of Beavers in a two different lakes. Elk Island is brilliant, lots of walking trails, lovely place to picnic and too see lots of animals
Super awesome saw the whole herd of bison and they were so fun to watch. Lots of amenities even a couple of food trucks on site. Always a great walk and its easy to move around. Top drawer outdoor experience.
It is truly a bueatiful park to get lost in. With the variety of flat hiking trails, the nearby lakes all around, and, during winter, the frozen waters to explore and traipse across. If you come at the right time, during the night, you can also catch glimpses of the northern lights. The only caveat is that it can become quite crowded and there may be a lot of cars that take away from the natural splendor.
Wonderful place for hiking of all types. Wildlife roaming through the park. Some paths easier to walk than others but there is something for everyone. Bathrooms at the park visitors centre were clean and fully functional. Watch out for stepping in buffalo poop :)
Natural Beauty. With lots of trail to walk and jog. Road through the park is fantastic. Can see bison strolling on the road. Very neat and clean and worth to visit often.
Great place to visit and close to Edmonton. Always nice to paddle Lake Astotin in summer, or walk it in winter.
There are nice trails here. Nothing too difficult. I annoyed my time spent here. Its been quite a while since I've done any hiking on the trails. But I had a good time today. The lakes are nice, it's a nice park to visit and not too far from home.
Elk Island Park is super cool! Free range bison is an amazing experience on a motorcycle. Absolutely perfect place to go for hiking or picnic all around pretty cool place
A great national park to see bison and northern lights in winter. Couple of lakes in the park for kayaking/canoeing. They also have BBQ and fire spots. I have heard there are some good trails for hiking. All in all a great spot to relax in mother nature's lap. 45 minutes away from Edmonton
We rode through the park on bicycle which was absolutely lovely. Cars gave us lots of space and talked to the park staff. Ate lunch at the clubhouse. The views don't get old.
I loved this place, it is so beautiful, and yes you do spot a lot of wildlife in my first visit only I stopped a big herd of bisons, and also spotted some so close to the vehicle just besides the road, did spot elks, mule deers and also coyotes, I am sure if we spent more time there would be more to add to list. There are also so many birds, you'll really enjoy watching them by them lake. The lakes are beautiful, place is very nicely maintained, you have this living water board walk which is really a nice concept. There's also dark preserve sky for star gazing and for those interested in watching Aurora or astronomy. It is so close to Edmonton, so you can reach this place really quick. You must visit this place undoubtedly.
It's such a huge, gigantic awesome park! A great place to hike, to camp, to have a picnic, it's just wonderful. You can also canoe there in the lake.
Great place to see wildlife and go for a couple good hikes. Trails are labeled with kilometres and approximate times that it takes to do each one, along with difficulty level. Nice beach and really cool museum as well as lots of events going on throughout the day. Really cool Bison Tales campfire event in the evening. Definitely recommend going if you’re in the area!!
Love taking the family here for the day. Whether it is for a hike on one of the many trails, a trip to Astotin for a beach or just a drive in the winter to visit the Bison. We always have a great time.
Absolutely stunning park. I went in the winter (as you can see by the white everythingness). Such beauty! There are several herds of buffalo that roam around the park, grazing. Be sure to check them out! If you’re feeling adventurous, bundle up and go on a hike! Totally beautiful! But absolutely cold.
Great place for natural beauty! We had the chance to see bison, elk etc! It was a beautiful evening!
I love this place. Very nice park to spend time with family.
I believe is more like a hiking/biking park but you can also go for a walk or have a nice picnic. Is very easy to get to one point to the other, you can walk or drive there, the facilities are nice and easy to follow and if you get lucky you can see a lot of animals and get very good pictures.
Came here on the first beautiful day of 2019 which happened to be our first time ever. We arrived and paid for our pass and the parks people were quite nice. They informed us that the wood we brought was to not be used, but did advise that there is free wood available. We went to the picnic area which was busy, but not crazy - we found a great spot, lit a fire and had some dinner. We followed some paved walking trails and really enjoyed our time - would highly recommend!
What a beautiful place! Full amenities, fantastic campsites, friendly staff, and all pretty affordable. It's one of our new favourite spaces.
My first visit to a National Park. What a great place to visit. Will definitely come again. So beautiful, and great to see this being protected.
the bison can be hard to see when they hide away, but it's fun to drive right past them when they're out!
An overlooked gem of the National Park System - only less than an hour east of Edmonton - some camping available, wonderful to see the bison herds, they are often very accessible. Also a nice lake to do some canoeing or just relax.
It's beautiful. Not a big park but plenty of things to do. New facilities all arround the park.
Absolutely beautiful national park. This park has it all. Camping, day use picnicking, playground, beach, trails and bison. There is a fee for entry as it is a national park. There are washroom facilities available in several areas of …
Decent amount of trails and ranging from 5 - 16.5 km long. Great for snow shoeing, cross country ski or for just a hike. Will definitely check it out again in the summer.
Really enjoyed stopping in here on our way home from Edmonton. It's a very beautiful National Park. Unfortunately I couldn't stay for the night because they were booked. Lots of small lakes.
So many bison! Made me very happy. Nice walks
Very nice place, fun experience and I had a blast ????????
Not too busy, trails ranging from paved to well maintained to decent condition. We didn't see any bison in the park but did along the highway which was awesome.
Went here the other weekend for some hiking with our baby. Couple trails were doable with a baby carrier and they also had some paved trails which were great with the stroller. Go here before 10am because this placed will get PACKED! We were leaving at around 12 having been there since 9 and it was just car after car piling in. It is outdoors so not as much of a covid concern as if it was indoors but still and massive amount of people were there.
Best to go early morning; you will see more wildlife that way. The hiking and walking trails are great. You can also see a lot of beaver activity on certain trails.
Visited Elk Island National Park on Labour day weekend. Our visit was brief but we thoroughly enjoyed our time there. Multiple trails with different lengths which are mostly easy to walk as the area is mostly flat. Numerous beautiful ponds and lakes. We only encountered two bisons near the road but will definitely go back at dusk to take some pictures and maybe encounter more wildlife.
Great trails of varying lengths, great for hiking during or after rain if you want lots of active wildlife
Beautiful, clean, large, many trail options. Will have to try the kayak rental next time.
The park is absolutely beautiful. Alot of awesome trails to hike on. You can canoes and kayaks and go exploring around the lake to see how far it goes and also check out the islands. Beautiful area to have a picnic lunch, camping, alot of rest stops and taken in nature and the amazing wild life. I reccomend this park for the tranquility it brings and the stillness of the waters.
I love Buffaloes. Right here in Edmonton only 35 minutes drive. Cost is under $10 bucks for adults. A must see experience. Love this place.
Had a great day driving touring around, looking for Bison. Was definitely not disappointed. Great place for a hike and a picnic!
Great place for stargazing, Northern lights, and bison!
Elk Island is such a quick drive from Edmonton - only 20 minutes from the east side of the city. The creatures are what bring us back again and again. There are moose, bison, beavers, pelicans, ducks and all manner of birds. I have never seen and Elk though. We kayak and have hiked a couple of the trails with many more to be seen. Summer, winter, spring and fall all have something to offer
I usually enjoy coming here but this weekend it was an ice rink. I ended up falling and cracking my head open and now have a concussion. They need to either A. Close the park or B. Take care of the hazardous trails. What are we paying $17 for?
I have been to Elk Island park many times. This is a very beautiful place with many walking trails and lakes. Having the chance to see a Bison up close is always amazing, this might not happen with every visit but when it does than it makes the park that much more enjoyable to visit.
This park is amazing, it has so many things to offer!
We got lucky, we were able to see pretty much every animal active in this area. Time stamp: May 20th, 2019
the best place for Northern Lights in Edmonton Area
Elk Island is superb. Great trails for hikers of all levels. Coming across bison is spectacular. Make sure to keep your distance as this is their park.
Its on my biannual Alberta to do list. The place never disappoints, specially if you are a nature lover and like to see animals in their natural habitat. The place also has a golf course, multiple trails and camping sites and lakes of all sizes scattered on the park land. Ample parking available.
Hidden gems near Sherwood Park. This national gives you a different taste than the famous Jasper or Banff. It is a must if you have time and in the Edmonton area. Great for a day trip or camping. Bring your pooch. They will love it.
We visited the park on a very windy Tuesday, a perfect day for a walk. The young man at the visitor centre was extremely helpful, and provided great information about different hikes/walks. Beautiful spot, highly recommend!
Ok, if you’re planning to visit elk island you should search elk island visitor centre as the google map will lead you to the main road(highway). We arrived there past 7 in the evening. Entrance fee are self service (machine). On your way to the lakes, you’ll be seeing lots of bison and exotic birds! The best scenic spot is at the astotin lake, this was featured at visit alberta advertisement.
I love Elk Island National Park. There are more programs here than you realize and it has something for everyone. Hiking, snowshoeing, camping, Stargazing, kayaking, etc. And you can rent a lot of equipment too. Also a great place to chase the Northern Lights.
Worst camp site ever. Online booking screw up my reservation and camp site won't give you refund. No staff is available after 7pm. Never again will book for this camp site. ????????????
Love it here.....such a beautiful place.
Love this park. I've spent alot of time here. Great for my photography. Beautiful clean, well kept park. Beautiful scenery and trails to hike. Overall just love it, and enjoyed my quite time spend hanging with the bison. I have however witnessed some people in the park not respecting nature..getting too close to the bison, getting chased by them and they ran back to their car. Did not like seeing that at all. We need to respect these animals and view from a distance. If someone gets hurt I hope the animals aren't blamed in a situation like this. It's their home and we are just the visitors. Maybe a better eye should be kept on that, but overall enjoyed every stop at Elk Island. Hope to visit again soon!
Great trails for walking, many doable with small kids. Lots of fire pits and picnic tables at specific locations for a great family day out.
I've now visited the park two times this year, I live in deep south Calgary so this place has had my curiosity for a few years now but since its far away I've never really been. It is absolutely worth the 3.5hr drive saw a TON of Bison and other wildlife including two Moose in April. I've only got 3 trails left to complete and planning to do them in September and October this year!
The park is beautiful but the water in Astotin Lake was REVOLTING
This place is the perfect escape from the hassle and bustle of the city... just a 20 minute drive from the city and you are in the essence of true nature... An amazing wildlife experience the sound of the frog's and the possibility of seeing Buffalo makes it a bit of an adrenaline rush too!!
Best place to see bisons so close. Near to Edmonton city. Should not be missed
The water, stars, amazing sky's and a big fire what more could you ask for oh yeah and the wild life .... absolutely beautiful!!!!
We saw our first Aurora in this park. The place is huge, beautiful and one of the best places to see the event. But it gets crowded which can make a bit harder to see the Aurora.
Its always worth the drive out. The northern lights are great to see when there aren't too many people out there.
Got a chance visit this national park of Canada in the 2021 summer, a few unique ones for sure, the cool scenery of bison right next to us, the cutting skill of a number of beaver engineers, natural botanical gardens.
Great place to go both during day and night. During the day it is an excellent place to wade and BBQ. At night it makes for awesome night sight seeing since there are zero artificial lights in this area. We went during coronavirus season and there were still plenty of people here at 2am.
I love this place. There's always new places to explore within. Be aware of the wild life, because it aware of you. We use bells and attach them to our zippers as well as our napsacks. Even our dogs. Yes nature is beautiful but remain aware don't go around with head phones. Your not in a rural area. Pay attention to where you are. People forget just because there used to humans doesn't mean they won't react. I've been coming to this park since I was a child and thank goodness I have never been endangered by any animal. Heard, seen we have even come across many animals going off path but you just need to be alert. Your never alone in the park, ever.
What a great spot to get away from the city for a bit, located not too far from Edmonton, about 30 minutes, allows for great hiking and sight seeing.
Elk Island is a beautiful oasis of pristine parkland wilderness - less than an hour from Edmonton. Great hiking trails and a chance to see wildlife up close and in abundance. In an hour and a half visit on a mid September evening I saw four bull elk, half a dozen whitetail deer, a bull moose and upwards of 60 bison. Also took a short walk down the beaver pond trail and saw numerous beaver and muskrat up close. Just driving through the park you're guaranteed to see bison. Other wildlife is hit and miss depending on the time of year but if you slow down and spend some time you will not be disappointed.
Wonderful park to visit, beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife to see. A great place for a pleasant drive or a relaxing walk. Almost guaranteed to see some Bison out in the field or right up close on the side of thr road.
Went in for bird counting for the first time. Twas a great time, people at the conservation center were very friendly and knowledgeable. Not too mention all the great chilli available.
Even though it was quite cool the paths were clear of ice and slush. We were even able to walk the complete boardwalk, though there were a couple of areas with shallow pools. The ice was beginning to melt on the pond edges and the beavers' work was very noticeable. We enjoyed our couple of hours of fresh air!
Amazing place so beautiful. Great price to get into the park and the people at the front gate are super polite. Has a ton of animals from elk to bison which are always great to see. The forest rangers maintain the park well and it is always clean and green.
Beautiful Park. Lovely sunset
Always a great place for an evening paddle
Place is under some repair, but over all the hiking trails were in excellent shape. Great place to see buffalo! It's nice and close to Edmonton but I'd still bring some snacks and water along.
Fun! Fun! Fun place!! So many activities. Camping, walking, hiking, cycling, kayaking, canoeing. It's a long list. I went kayaking on Lake Astotin. Was super fun. I'd recommend that for everyone.
I really enjoy going to Elk Island Park. It's such a quick drive from Edmonton, and I just love getting to see the Bison. They even have about seven resident Black Bears now! The park staff are friendly and very knowledgeable, and the park is kept super clean. I love taking my dog there, as he's not discriminated against because he's a Pit Bull (which I love). Just be mindful to keep your dog on a leash and pick up after them. They also have a strict no kites rule, after they found tons of kite string and garbage left over from people not cleaning up after kite fights (who knew?). All in all, a great place, but could use another place to eat other than the golf course clubhouse.
Beautiful , love the roaming Buffalo ,beach area and great walking trails. Wish the water was swim safe.
The park is beautiful and well maintained however the staff is rude. Sorry not the staff, just the curly haired lady supervising Astotin lake area today. We have an extremely friendly dog who doesn’t wander more than 5 feet from us... apparently it was necessary to yell at us and threaten having a warden come remove us if he wasn’t tied up? Let’s focus on people littering/disturbing the peace a little more maybe and leave people who are minding their own business alone :)
Beautiful scenery and live buffalo just roaming the park like part of visiting guests. Get your picnic on and even start your campfire to relax with friends and family. I loved the experience wished I seen an elk or moose but to be fair was there for a short hour or so glad to had taken the buffalo pics. If ever in Edmonton take the time and visit this beautiful landmark....
Very up to date and clean park with lots of camping and trails,
Awesome! Is really big and beautiful there, you can have fun and enjoy a walk with family.
Relax with the nature! Nice spot in Edmonton to visit.
A remote location hidden away from the city of Edmonton, nature's paradise. With a feeling of though your located somewhere on Prince Edward Island, you find yourself surrounded by the natural beauty of land and water.
A great place for hikes and getting away from the city. Be aware of the elephant sized mosquitos that swarm like locusts. Wear armour. Or bring an extra pint of blood with you if you decide to go on a longer hike. Should be called Mosquito Island.
Love this place! Great place for family's, spend the day or spend the night. One of my favorite's.
Absolutely stunning area located east of Edmonton. A great place to get outdoors go on an easy hike and even spot some wildlife. They have a camp ground, golf course and even canoe rentals in the summer. It's nice to have an outdoor escape so close to the city.
Beautiful park very close to the capital of Alberta. You get to see some wild animals too. Also a good place for canoeing.
My advice is to go early. There are lots of trails to walk. The information centre has lots of information.
Love this 9ark. A short drive east of edmonton with so much to offer. Make sure you go early morning or late evening to see the bidin
Beautiful national park, love the trails, vast water networks.... And a great knowledgeable staff... Thank you
Always enjoy coming here. Close to Edmonton with fascinating nature. Nice playgrounds and recreation areas. Boats for rent and accessible washroom. I highly recommend comming herr esprcially for kayaking or watching the sunset or gazing the stars or catching the aurora through the night.
Great place for hiking. Enough trails to spend all day in here. Views are great, ypu can see bison and kids can play on a playground. If you have family, there is enough space for picnic.
Great place to ho for winter jokes or cross country skiing. A lot of space to social distance, especially beautiful with the frost on the trees.
Good for a day trip from Edmonton. Easy to spot a group of Bison just by driving by. They have good lakeside beach, camping ground and walking trails
Just around half hour drive from Edmonton driving towards east along Yellowhead Highway. Lots of easy hiking loops. Lots of fun for children. (Don’t forget Insect repellent spray. Lots of mosquitos and bugs during summer) Been there during winter but only could see few bison only. But the roads inside the park were pretty good for a front wheel driven minivan.
Lots of fun, great trails and lots to see. Best time of day to see wildlife is early morning or right before sunset
Almost 70 Kilometres off Edmonton, there sits Avery nice, picturesque and elegant family picnic spot; a hidden gem. Huge open space near beautiful lakes, with lot of parking spaces, sitting arrangements and abundant kid activities space, the spot is one of the nicest place for family getaway, get Together and picnicking. Canoeing, Kayaking ,rowing, boating facilities are available at very reasonable prices along with life jacket and nice welcoming helping hands. A small Theater, tracking and newly installed over-the-water wood way, just make your stay a pleasure. First class Clean wash rooms, shower-after-lake water activities and dishwashing facilities are available. Once you are there, you sure will come out with a promise with yourself: “ Sure, we will be back”. Did my review help in any sense! If yes please say so????
Nice place to bring the kids, great walking trails
Big park nearby Edmonton. 3 lakes with nice beaches and canoeing. Short trails for hiking and camping places. So sad that I didn’t have enough time to spend my entire day there so I didn’t do any activity or see any animals. Didn’t have the chance to see bison in the loop.
Situated close to Edmonton, on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place, travelling route and home for many Indigenous Peoples. Elk Island National Park offices a diverse plethora of opportunities for all to explore. Any season offices an escape to nature's exploration. Wildlife can be spotted throughout the park, and one should be especially cautious during the twilight hours. Peaceful walks can be had walking the floating boardwalk while potential spotting little muskrats moving about in the water. Whether visiting for a camping trip, peaceful stroll on floating boardwalk, a float on the water, or experiencing a beautiful sunset you will be blessed with expanse natural that surrounds you.
A lovely park. Bison roam free inside the park. Lots of other animals as well. There are beautiful lakes and trees as well as flowers and other plants. The staff I talked to was helpful and pleasant.
Beautiful spot to visit. Lovely trails. Lots of wildlife. Signage could be better though.
Very nice place to go for hiking or even just a walk by the lake. Not a lot you can do other than walking/swimming, but it’s beautiful to see.
Very refreshing and family friendly national park. Love it!
Many trails and the walk by the lake was phenomenal. There is canoe rental but call in advance as they might be closed. The best time to see the bison is around dusk.
Second time here and it was absolutely amazing. I went here this summer for backpacking training and its the perfect spot. I camped at astotin campsite and walked to moss lake and it was a perfect place to start my training as well as oh so beautiful.
It was fantastic! Beautiful day of kayaking with an absolutely stunning woman.
Nice place to spend a day watching wildlife, boating, hiking or just have picnic beside many lakes .
Really enjoyed the day trip. Sat on the car and watched 3 bull bison walk past us within 5 m.
Good place for a day trip with kids.
I went to watch a show of Auroras. I was not lucky enough. But then the lake was beautiful in the moonlight
You are almost guaranteed to encounter a big boi on your excursion. Many big bois roam the park, well worth the $16 family pass. Do not approach the big bois but do say hello and gently call to them that they are indeed bigboiz.
Great picnic spots. Amazing to see close up of the bison. You can capture something beautiful sunsets here too. Only disappointment was that the water at Astotin Lake smelled really bad, almost like sewage water.
What a surprise! Go early morning and see bison galore! Then hang out with the parks staff making bannock and chatting in the activities in the park.
A welcoming spot with a few good hikes, nothing too difficult, beautiful scenery. We even caught site of a few bison on our way out.
Astotin lake has blue green algae. I didn't see anything posted until I drove out to the park and unloaded my kayak. If you have a dog do not bring them!
Great hikes! Beautiful scenery!
Awesome hiking trails for all levels. Knowledgeable staff that keep the kids engaged with projects to help them learn more about the world around them.
It was very cold but we got to see the bisons in different spots. If you want to see bisons then visit bison trail in the evenings only.
Love visiting this park each year I am in Edmonton. One of the few places that you get to see the bisons up close. Dawn or dusk is usually the best time to see them but sometimes they may just not come out and be at other area in the park. Obviously the herd here is much smaller compared to Yellowstone but it is still a sight to see the huge beasts roaming around. Do bring bug spray or you will be eaten alive by the mosquitoes, especially if you venture out on the trails or by the lakes. One thing I have not done is to camp out there and enjoy the dark sky for stargazing.
Only saw one buffalo and it didn't look that healthy. Saw more beaver dams than anything. Alot of algae in the water. Not good enough to even kayak in.
Got to see Bison from the main highway but not within the park. Its a busy place with lots of traffic. Mostly day use and camping areas. Hikes are ok.
Close drive. Pack a picnic, some firewood and snow clothes. The washrooms are open (need a mask). Great day!
The lakes are gorgeous, it's really meat to be able to get comfortably close to bison without getting hurt :) I always have a great time visiting the park.
Awesome place to kayak, canoe and picnics too. Bisons spotted quite frequently around the bushes or by the roadside.
It’s about 30 mins drive from Edmonton. Worth it. The first time I saw a bison. It was beautiful and overwhelming. The tress, lakes and the space are incredible. I really enjoyed the walk and the talk !!!
Beautiful place for a family picnic and worth your time…. Unfortunately, not much animal to see or get closer…. But, don’t lose hope, they will appear in a place and time of their liking…. It is a great place to bike and hike. Enjoy!
Beautiful park. The trail system offers short to full-day hikes. Mostly scenic loops around the lakes and ponds. So much wildlife.
This park is a nice, clean and safe place!
Extremely good place to go with lots of lake sight viewing and hands-on interaction with the environment. Be sure to bring bug spray during mosquito months. If the weather is cool, there will probably be wood bisons in sight around the trails when driving into the park. The beach portion of the lake next to the parking lot is usually filled with sea gulls and very beautiful in sunny days. Most of the hiking is within forests surrounding the lake. Paths is rather narrow and hiking is limited with seniors. Recommended for highschool biology IB field trips due to its diverse ecosystem and unique wetland organisms.
Best for a day picnic. Lots of options. Its not at all boring. If you go in group or solo...visit the museum ( spend 15-20 mins) and then you can see the place where bisons are treated. Then you go to Astotin lake where you have bunch of options like Kayaking, Canoeing, and even a standing Raft. Its roughly 17-20$ per person per hour for the water sports activities. You can spend a day trip here ending up with some cheerful moments with the family. People who love trails can go on trails but should wear full sleaves and track pants as there are mosquitos on the trails.
Wonderfully quiet...no trains or highway noise. Dry-camping only in a former parking lot, which is okay. I much prefer writing positive reviews but this one takes the cake! Bless the camping staff for trying but the federal government has surely screwed up simple camping management, beyond belief. In 30+ years of camping, this one rings as the most mis-managed of them all. We phoned twice in the morning to ensure there was space, which we were told was easily available. Upon arriving at noon, no one could be found to check in, with a sign saying they'd return at 2:45pm. On the building is a sign indicating self-registration but no way to do it, so we found a spot and set up our trailer. At 2:45, my wife went over to check in and was advised that we couldn't have that spot because someone else had booked it (yet the spot remained empty last night) so we have to move to a different spot. At the campground is another sign indicating self-checkin but no way to do it. When we return, someone is already in the spot we now are supposed to occupy, which meant another trip back to registration. In the end we both had to move because this management couldn't fight their way out of a a wet kleenex. What a colossal screwup that only could be orchestrated by too much government interference. We're out of here and we won't be back.
This national park is closest to Edmonton I believe. Its vast. The entrance fee is very reasonable. The staff here are very helpful and friendly. It's a great place for family and friends to visit . There are many activities to be enjoyed like going on the canoe, trekking, camping, barbecues, seeing the beaver dams etc. Its a very pleasant and peaceful place. It's very well maintained and clean. Its great for a day trip too. Canoes are offered on Rental basis. Most people come and barbecue, enjoy the man made beach etc. If you are lucky you can see the wild life like the Bison and Beaver . The park is close to the Ukrainian village on one side and The town of Lamont which is about 10 kilometers on the other side. It's a beautiful place to visit.
All time favourite park as its closest to our home. Lots of things to do. And presence of staff that monitors the cleanliness of the area. Lots of portable toilet around to avoid crowding of lineups. ???? thumbs up for the effort to minimize gathering and avoid getting covid19. An ice cream truck and a korean food truck was just a plus. We only did a day trip and it was an awesome day for my 4year old. Tables are apart from each other and gives enough distance to the next neighbor. Suggest to be there early specially on weekends as you can get caught by the long lineup getting in on the entrance gate. We went early and we had a pass so we didnt have to wait. And lots of good spots for your picnic table depending on your taste. Kids can play sand by the lake , dont forget to bring your sand toys. Barbecue grills have changed its now protruding out of the ground like a mailbox not like the old big circular metal from the floor. Overall a definite awesome place for family bonding time ????.
Buffalos show up quite often. Nice trails for short hiking. Recently they installed EV charging stations.
Great place to camp. Nice playground for the kids. Hiking trails. Water sports. Lots of wild life.
Beautiful place to go for the day, hike around or just chill at the beach, you can also rent canoes to take out, next time we're there, that's defiantly what we are going to do
Today I visited Elk Island National Park. The Visitor Centre had informative displays and helpful employees. It helped me know where I wanted to go in the park. Bison Loop Road was as advertised: herds of bison close to the road. Great photos! I then walked the Living Waters Boardwalk at Astotin Lake. Itajes you over marshes right next to the lake. It's a short walk but peaceful. I saw different types of ducks and also egrets. Beautiful day!
Staff was very helpful, provided guidance and answered all our questions. We even got to see a bison. Beware that if you do a trail by the water, you will see millions of black flies swarming above you.
Amazing beautiful peaceful park!!! Close to town! Water, forest, different hiking options -everything you need in one place to escape city!!! Lots of animals and birds around you! Real nature, very clean, and you can see bisons love it too!!!????
Had a great time with the kids lots of trails to cycle ???? and hike ????♂️ kids loved it. Friends of ours had some problems with their car and park staff was there to help in any way they could to get them going again. Thank you EINP Staff.
This place is great for day trips but is a tad far for what is actually there. There is a few bogs/lakes here but they are small and overrun with people. If you are looking for zen or quiet this isn’t the place for you. There is a free range bison herd loose in the park but they are really hard to locate. Overall a good spot for those who wants to see nature but don’t wNt to drive to a real national park. Not worth the entrance fee
Close to the city but is a great place for hiking or kayaking. Love the views and the tables with grills to cook in for picnicking. Good times for the whole family!
Pretty decent park, it was snowing and so cold, we went just to see the bison ???? everything else was white and cold
This national park is a few minutes west from Edmonton. Easy to get to and drive through. When we went today, one lake road was closed. We went to Moss lake which is a moderate hike. There are free roaming bison, which is super cool just be careful you don't get too close. There is a golf course and a campground. I will have to go back to check out the golf course.
Very well maintained national park Great to see the bisons! Also many other animals. Waterland birds and insects! Brrr leeches in the water! Good information centre, safe and fun to visit at any time of the year
Great for young families! We stayed here 2 nights for our first camping trip with our kids. It's close to the city, has new hot showers and bathrooms very close to the campground. We enjoyed hiking the Lakeview trail (4km) and watching for bugs, birds, frogs... The staff is very kind and friendly. Thanks to their knowledgable advice we were able to go to the spots where Bison. Also, there's is a nice playground and the theater. Recommend the "flying Bison" movie. The campgrounds aren't very private, being so close to each other but we didn't mind it. Elk Island is a great park even for a day visit. We recommend it and would definitely be back.
What a fantastic area, I haven't been there for 20 or more years. Wishing we had brought kayaks out, the water was perfect. We went for a great hike around the trails, we couldn't have asked for nicer weather.
What a great place to visit in the winter. There are so many hiking trails and places to cross country ski. If that isn't what you enjoy, there is a hill to toboggan, a shelter to build a fire and have a picnic or go for a pleasant drive.
Elk Island is great for getting out of the city and driving through nature. I have yet to see any elk there but bison are a common sight on my visits. Looking forward to stargazing at Elk Island in the summer months.
Lot of picnic tables and a big picnic lot...Lot of parking.. Good place
Awesome. Did not disappoint! Saw about 10 buffalo. Close & far away. Interpretive center very impressive. Found some Red Chairs.
Good park and near the city
Nice park and lake hopefully will do camping soon this year. Just celebrated Canada day ???????????????????? with family members ❤
Excellent place to visit for a hike or a picnic or even stay the evening and gaze at the stars. Awesome outing and you may encounter a buffalo or two on the road. Remember this is their home so be kind and respect all wildlife you encounter. You won't be disappointed.
Elk Island Park is beautiful! If you live in Edmonton it is the perfect day trip. Bike, hike, gold, swim or sightsee you won't be bored. There are a number of animals to see, a drive through the bison paddock won't disappoint. The park is equipped with number of picnic shelters, washrooms or food trucks and a restaurant.
Was able to see a big bison up close during our visit. This is such a good quick getaway place.
Great picnic ground. We went there second weekend of September 2019. Weather is a little bit cold So we didn't try swimming but there are still people kayaking . It looks amusing. We also drive around the Bison loop to watch the bisons eating. Its an unforgettable experience. Bisons are roaming free!
Beautiful park for quality family time. Lakes, playgrounds, trails, washrooms...etc.
My favourite place. It’s close to Edmonton and lots of wildlife. Lots of bison, elks, lots of beavers and deer. Amazing landscape.
Nice little national park, a good place to catch the northern lights when they are strong enough to view them from Edmonton. I have yet to experience that greatness.
Tawayik lake trail is gorgeous! Still don't know why kite flying is such a big issue that it needs a sign!
So beautiful! Many hiking trails of all levels and a great lake for kayaking!! Everyone on the trails are always super nice and usually lots of puppys for petting! Lots of wildlife and the best part is how close to the city it is!
Amazing park filled with so much plant and animal diversity! Great hiking trails close to Edmonton. Get here early in the morning if you want to see some Bison! Remember if you’re going to Astotin Lake, it’s about another 15 minutes down the road from the entrance to the park.
Second oldest national park in Canada. Great wilderness areas, lots of trails and lots of water to see wildlife. First visit, but definitely visiting again when possible.
If ever wanted 2 get away for a day I totally recommend Elk Island was pretty amazing and pretty cool experience 2 be so close 2 the bison ???? great hiking and pretty cool spots 2 just hang out and sit by the water ????
We came through in the fall. Saw a few buffalo. A few years earlier we lucked out to come during the rutting season. It was fascinating watching the bulls challenge each other. It’s a park that invites us back on a regular basis.
It's always nice to get out of the city and into this park to recharge the batteries :-)
Location is fairly close to Edmonton, just right off the Yellowhead. Nice place to have a picnic or barbecue with family and friends, and it even has a beach you can go kayaking or canoeing on. Dogs are also allowed in the Park so feel free to bring your furry friends. Keep in mind there is a fee to enter National Parks again – so it's a much better idea to carpool there if you're going with friends.
Awesome place to unwind and reconnect with nature and see the sunset. There's boardwalk over a swamp, a good place to spot aquatic animals nesting around. There's also a rental place for kayaks, canoes and paddle boards for those who wants to wander around the Astotin lake.
