This Zoo belongs to the category of Zoo.
Our family had a good time! The staff was friendly and knowledgeable and the grounds were clean. The animal highlights included the polar tunnel, the butterfly room and the anteaters!
We made a spur of the moment trip to the Detroit Zoo early in October. In hindsight, this is probably not the best time to visit the zoo. Most of the animals were sleeping, and quite a few exhibits were closed. It does seem like a very nice zoo, and we will probably come back in the Spring. The Halloween decorations were really cool!

Enjoyed the Christmas light show. Great place for all age groups. Would recommend buying the tickets in advance. Majority of people were wearing face masks.

We went to see the holiday lights at night in December. The paid the basic entrance fee none of the all you can eat or add on tickets. It was beautiful and very fun. Very creative light displays, especially the under the sea section.

My family had a wonderful time at the 2021 ZooBoo. Lots of costumes, staged performances (some interactive) and decorative exhibits along your walk. I was disappointed that there were no treats along the path. We only got a bag with 2 candies. Aside from that, my toddler and 1year old had a good time. We hope to return for the Christmas lights.

I love Zoos, and this one is fabulous! I could spend hours in the butterfly ???? and bird areas. Beautiful! The polar bear and sea otter displays are wonderful.

The Zoo Lights was definitely better than when we visited 3 years ago. We loved the underwater themes & all the new light editions. However, We did miss the Reptile House being open & wish that they would open some of the other indoor animal exbits. Also, waa sad that they raised the prices, especially with Holiday's.
A very "park like" zoo experience. Lots of grass and picnic tables and benches. Most of the exhibits provided good views of the animals. The bear exhibits were particularly good.

I had a wonderful outing at the Detroit Zoo today. Alot of exhibits were not open due to construction, but seeing the beauty of our wildlife is worth the trip. The grounds and gardens are so nicely kept and the staff is so informative, treat your family to an out day adventure and visit here....
I don't remember how many times I went to this zoo but I always loved it. They really take care of the animals and keep trying to improve it. They also have a really good Coney island in the very middle which has the freshest fries I ever had at a Coney Island in this state. Never gets boring! These pics are from before there was Covid.

I've been going here since I was knee high to a grasshopper and loved it ever since! It's still such a magical place. The COVID restrictions (masks even for vaccinated folks, time slots for tickets, etc) are not my favorite things in the world, but not enough to ruin my time here.

Huge zoo and perfect weather today. I love the shades of the trees. Very nice place. Highly recommended‼️????????????
We took the kids and met up with a work friend and her kids for a day out. I had never been to this zoo and only Toledo, but for its size I was impressed by the number of exhibits. Unfortunately due to the current Covid crisis, some exhibits were closed but with what was available we made the most of it. Zoo staff was very friendly and courteous! Thank you Detroit Zoological Society for being able to be open during a turbulent time!!
The staff is great. They were definitely on top of the covid precautions. Great display of the Wild Lights, especially at night. Go after 6pm when it's darker lol.

What an awesome experience. The little one enjoyed looking at all the animals. The penguin exhibit is temporarily closed. Peacocks were prancing about on the common walkways; it was surreal. They had polar bears out in their enclosure and I was just hoping they were comfortable in the heat. The sea otter was not shy at all. Lil dude put on a show near the place where people can view them. We did miss on watching the lions walking around, because we arrived at their area when they were napping. They have a board upfront telling visitors what's a good time to view the animals there, which I've added here. You should plan out the stops accordingly to be able to see all the animals.
What an amazing zoo! The enclosures are so large, especially for the reptiles! So many animals I've never seen in another zoo before. So impressed! Can't wait to go back.

Wonderful zoo! I've been going here since I was young. If you are looking for a great time seeing animals, the Detroit zoo is the place to go. Fun for the whole family! Snacks, restaurant and bathrooms are easily accessible. I love the polar bears, grizzly bears, lions and tigers.

Went with a couple of friends to see Wild Lights. It's great for families or maybe even a date. The exhibit is huge and takes about a hour to walk through, so dress warm and wear comfortable shoes. If visiting with small children, strollers or wagons are advisable as the walk is long. They also have a limited Amount of mobile scooters.

We always love The Detroit Zoo! Such good people who work there and it's always so much fun for my little ones! Lots of nice areas to set up a picnic, lots of cool animals (and we had someone hanging out in the amphibian house telling us all about some of the habitants there and using a red flashlight thing to show us where they are!), Dippin Dots, and a playground! We always have so much fun and love being members!
Good zoo but not great. Lots of walking. Only a couple of food places open and most until closer to noon. Lots of walking between exhibits and several buildings were closed.
Great place! It has lots of animals and good for little kids as well. Our favorite animals were the giraffes and the tigers.
This used to be a nice animal filled family fun zoo. The last two times I went it cost our family roughly $100 just to get in and there were less animals than I've ever seen. There also seems to be a trash problem suddenly. Garbage and cups all over the place. I'm not sure if it's a low employee issue or what but we were very disappointed.
Some of the buildings were closed off, loved the tiger, he was very active, we did not see any of the monkeys in their habitat. There is a new baby giraffe. He is so adorable. Many of the drink stands were out if ice or had no carbonation for their pop machine.

Was a really good experience. The lights were great had a good variety. The only complaint I would have would be they had VIP areas I guess they were called, with heaters and drinking areas, that had nobody in them. But we could not use them not even to go walk underneath a patio heater to warm up for a few minutes was kind of ignorant being that it was like 20° outside and there was nobody in these spaces except for the people GUARDING them. I HOPE IT PAID OFF FOR THEM BEING AS IT LOOKED LIKE NOBODY HAD PURCHASED VIP TICKETS. There was other people mumbling about it but all in all it was a good trip to see the lights.

I know Covid has ruined a lot of things -but the zoo! They had a lot of attractions shut down- the train wasn’t even running. We still had fun and we’re able to see a few animals but there weren’t a whole lot to see. Got a few good photos. Kind of disappointed for my sons first zoo trip
Very nice Zoo. I cut them some slack for being the difficulty of the Covid-19 impact. In time I suspect that they will be up and running with more exhibits. Again, it's still a great destination in sprite of a few closed exhibits. You should give this place a visit. The Reservation system didn't work will for me and didn't send me my printable ticket till the next day. If that happens to you, don't worry, the folks at the gate were able to look you up based on the Confirmation number. My wish is for them to reinstate Paper Maps.
We had a lot of fun here, we enjoyed, walked a lot, saw a lot of animals and eat a food food. We spent basically 4 hrs there and we were in love with the animals, good place, in a really good condition, friendly service and food organization there.
Penguins building was closed. Polar bears were too hot to come out to be seen. Most animals were sleeping. Staff was rude, and there was a bunch of construction going on, so in the buildings there was banging while you tried to enjoy the animals.

We love visiting the zoo in the winter. We took the first time slot on a Saturday morning. It's possible we saw 10 other people total. Masks required in buildings. No problem. We got to see the wolves which was great.
We LOVE the zoo. It was a PERFECT day!! The animals were AMAZING!! Don't forget your water bottle. The only water fountains available are the bottle refill ones. Make sure you see the gorillas!! The Gorillas were AWESOME!!
It was rainy in the morning, but stopped in the early afternoon. That made it kinda chilly out, and there weren't many people there. I usually go more during the summer and it is often hot. The big animals were very active. The polar bears, grizzly bears, lions, tigers, kangaroos and wolves were all out and roaming around their habitats. It was great to see them almost playing!

I love this zoo so much! This was the first time I have ever came here and I cannot wait to come back! There were so many active animals and they had large nice spaces to roam around. The animals are very well kept up with and fed. This is a great zoo to take the whole family and there is something to see for everyone! Beware, put on walking shoes because there is so much walking and so much to see.

Love love love Detroit zoo. I haven’t been in a few years. Pros: - big beautiful lush exhibits - app map of the zoo which helped get rid of that old paper map and would show me real time where i was so the exhibits where easy to locate - having timed entrance I feel helps the lines move quick and with the crows, I feel I was actually able to see everything I wanted - lots of good shade and water fill stations - has an air conditioned breast feeding and baby care station if you need a break from the heat Cons: - penguin exhibit was closed - limited food options - could benefit from having more hands on and active exhibits. As well as more photo opportunities.

New to Michigan and have avoided being out much due to the pandemic. Highly recommend "wild lights" here at the zoo. There was plenty of space to feel like you were ok with or without masks. The kids loved the lights, and there was nice ambiance with the music they played. I highly recommend heading off the main street into the "enchanted forest" towards the beginning of the walk. It was nice to walk amongst the trees and the lights, plus they had flashing lights zooming overhead that my daughter swore were fairies. One of my favorite areas for sure.
The Detroit Zoo lights were awesome as ever!! This is a tradition we have started with our family and really enjoy it! Highly recommend for every family to experience the joy of Christmas with the beautiful light display at the Detroit Zoo.

We had a great time, enjoyed a lot of the animals. Everything from the baby chimps to the butterfly garden. Two drawbacks were the seemingly overwhelming amount of exhibits that were closed, as well as the lacklustre food. Half of the food options were closed, and the ones that were open had incredibly slow service and some were sold out of food at 12:30. How do you sell out of food on a holiday weekend when lunch time just started, that is some poor management. No warnings on website when getting tickets, no warning of closed exhibits when entering, no information given until you get to the closed exhibits or closed food options... We will definently come back and try again, hopefully exhibits are back up and running, food options are open. But in the meantime, bring your own food/snacks/drink. And expect lots of closed attractions.
The Detroit zoo is a hidden gem of the metro area. One of the best zoos to see polar bears and penguins! The special events are unique and a lot of fun as well. The staff are friendly and the food services are really good. This is fun for the whole family!

We bought our times entry tickets for 10am. When we arrived at about 10:05am, the line was very, very long just to get in. This is one of the reasons for only 4 stars. It moved rather quickly but it was wierd considering we bought our tickets ahead of time. The other reason for only 4 stars was because of a few closed things. Im sure they were discussed on the website which I didnt check ahead of time...so this could be my fault. Other than that, it was fun! Oh! And if your kids like to get their faces painted, plan on paying $15 to $19 per kid. They did a good job, but quite expensive. Overall, it was a great day at the zoo!
I have been to the Detroit Zoo innumerous times since the 1960's, able to enjoy this zoo from a child's perspective, and now a grandparent's viewpoint. The zoo has had its ups and downs over the years, and I'm pleased to see a quality family experience exists as never before. The Zoological Society has made this "Vitamin Z" encounter as much about environmental preservation as it does about the animals and their habitats. Special attractions throughout the year to include the spectacular "Wild Lights" display that my wife and I attended last night, are exactly what makes this attraction a first-class family adventure. I usually complain about the price, but I can't imagine trying to properly care for the residents of the zoo, and the picturesque surroundings on less. Hopefully, we'll soon be able to visit the penguins again!
Wild lights winter event was amazing! Although I do wish some of the winter oriented animals would have been open. Although being later in the evening I do understand. We did however get to see the otters!!! Wonderful family experience overall!!!
My son had an amazing time. We took a ride on the train. We walked and walked and walked some more. We had fun seeing all the animals. We didn't get a chance to see the butterflies and polar bears. Their sanctuaries are open, it was just too many people in there at the time.

It was a hot day but enjoyed walking around seeing all the animals. Drinks $23 for 5 dinks and no kids or straws, kids ended up spilling half of their Gatorade. Woman who waited on us (pizza restaurant) was extremely rude.
Beautiful day at the zoo, most of the animals were active today, saw most of them. Not too many of the cafeterias or eating areas to get prepared food other than snacks and drinks were open. They were selling the dippin dots and ice cream, not sure what other snacks tho. We Did not have a membership or have to make reservations today, we called the zoo before to make sure. The upgrades they made are awesome! Wish there was more then one place to smoke in the entire OUTSIDE AREA lol. However I understand it of the respect of others who don't smoke or who have kids! We enjoyed getting popcorn to takes home but due to the weather we did eat or drink there but were excited to see hot chocolate stands and other warm foods.

I'll start off with my one big qualm about our last visit- The Arctic Exhibit wasn't open, but there was no sign indicating that before we trekked the whole walk through in 90°F weather. We would have passed that area if we knew that was going to be the case. We always pack our own food and drinks because the food and drink prices are absolutely unreal. I get it, it's the zoo, but you can get a cheaper and bigger soda from the movie theater, and that's saying something. They do have places to refill your water bottles for free though! The only great thing about the place is seeing all the animals. The grounds and exhibits are always clean and well maintained. The animals appear very well cared for and we do enjoy it enough to return at least once a year.
Fun place to spend a few hours. During the summer season you'll have plenty of animals to see on your walk or if you go in the winter they have their annual holiday zoo lights to enjoy. I think the cost for the public zoo lights is only $10, btw.
$11–15
Always a great place to go with the kids to get out. We use it for the Pokémon stops and exercise or take the whole fam and dip out for a few hours. Kids enjoy the animals and learn about them Everytime. We bought the family membership so all we gotta do it reserve our free tickets for the day we go and we're good.

Love this place, super friendly staff and great exhibits. Feels like you can reach out and touch the tiger but it's far away and safe. Really well done. Red Pandas are fun to watch and if you go here on a weekday in the winter there's a chance you can have the whole zoo to yourself! Just wish they had the penguins on display, they keep delaying the opening of the exhibit and won't give an ETA which is very frustrating for my kiddo who loves penguins.

September 2021 - because of the hot day not that many animals were out. But my daughter loved it when it snowed and the warm weather. Many things back open. Somethings have been moved. Penguin exhibit still closed. They had a bat and something else near the rhinos. I went to the zoo on January 2, 2021 with one my children. A lot of exhibits were closed. Penguin, amphibian, reptile, butterfly building, and one area was under construction. We still got to see some wonderful animals. The Tiger brothers were playing. One of the red pandas was high up in a tree, and we enjoyed our time.
Beautiful facility with well kept animals from all over the world. The Detroit Zoological Society does some amazing educational and conservation work and runs a top-tier zoo experience for all ages, so much so that my wife and I are considering becoming members. They also run special events, for example, we just visited for the lights and were blown away. Great zoo! Will come again soon!
Always enjoy a trip to the zoo. Pictures are from"Wild Lights" exhibit. Great light show. No viewing of animals. Good management of capacity.
We took 5 yr old grandson. Love the Detroit Zoo. More indoor exhibits are open than last year ( Covid ) . However, giraffe house , education center and our favorite the Penguin house were still closed ????. Also, make sure you schedule tickets in advance ,because they are still restricting capacity ( which is nice, not crowded at all ). One concern is the only indoor restaurant that was open to get out of the heat to eat is the pizza place , restaurant near back of zoo still closed. Train and carousel is running.

So many wonderful memories and great memorable trips to the Detroit Zoo, with friends & family! Especially when my dad would take my sister and I on Saturdays when we were really little! I'm so happy Metro Detroit has this historical zoo and it's renovating and updating attractions all the time but still feels the same as it did 30 years ago. I applaud their efforts for animal conservation and making choices based on the animals needs, not the interests of the public. It was sad to see them send the elephants Winky & Wendy off to a 30 acre habitat with many more elephants, but to have them stay in a 1 acre holding pen and indoors all winter was detrimental to their emotional well being and physically harmful to muscle deterioration & bone mass loss. Great Zoo SIX Stars!!!

This was the second time I've been here, I had a wonderful time. All of the staff was incredibly friendly and the animals were seemed happy and healthy (including the squirrels who decided they were part of the exhibits).
The Christmas lights were magical. There was hot chocolate stands which was nice because it was so cold. There was also food available, the fries were tasty.
All star ratings are for the bathroom, not the establishment. To be precise, this review is for the bathroom just west of the Penguin house. For a place with hundreds, if not thousands, of visitors each day, this bathroom was amazingly clean. It smelled nice, looked nice.... probably sounded nice(I haven't really been paying attention to sound qualities) There were quite a few stalls, as well as a fair few urinals, including the short guy for kids. If yo have really little ones with you, there is a "family" bathroom with tiny toilets and shorter sinks. The air dryers went working today, but there were two. And the door had a foot pull so you don't have to touch a handle. If you're at the zoo, it's a good place to poo.
You are lucky if you get to see the lion awake. Visit the zoo when the weather is cool. Otherwise, you will end up looking at sleepy animals. The walking trail goes around the zoo and at the end of your visit you’ll be at 10k steps. Make sure to visit the Kangaroo, the butterflies and the penguins areas.

We had the unique experience of filming at the zoo for a About Royal Oak & Zoo Video. It was a great experience! Lines for everything we’re short, the staff is very friendly. The new restaurant Table 28 (the letters look like Jurassic Park) severs the very tasty Great Lakes Crossing coffee (I had a nitro brew) local sourced honey & foods. The BBQ Mac & cheese was delightful. It replaced the Arctic Circle Cafe & did not disappoint
I had an amazing time. It was clean and organized. They had two baby bears on display a grizzly cub and a polar bear cub and a beautiful tiger and grey wolf.
Great day at the zoo! Gate access was quick and staff friendly. Buildings & grounds should of been alot cleaner since it was an extremely slow day do to all the freeway flooding. About 5 animal exhibits were closed. A couple of the smaller business's were closed as well. It's definitely not as nice as the Toledo or the other Ohio zoo. We absolutely loved the peacocks having free run of the park. I was able to get some pics of one showing all his gorgeous feathers. But all in all any day spent with animals is an amazing day in our eyes!

My children and I enjoy this zoo because it's the only local zoo in our area.. I have nothing to complain about except for the size of the actual animal enclosures. Bears, lions, tigers, ect. Shouldn't be kept in such a small box. They all appear to be lethargic, almost like they've just given up and accepted life as is in these small clear boxes. Food is obviously over priced, as any tourist attraction normally is. The whole zoo is a little over 1.5 miles, super clean and family friendly. They also have these water mister cool down stations that really help during the hot summer days.

Went to the zoo boo October 9, had a blast! Got to see all the animals and some of the zookeeper's were feeding them which was an awesome sight! Great for all ages! They also have a new restaurant "table 28" and my family got chicken tenders, chicken Mac n cheese and the truffle fries, definitely worth the price you pay! The souvenir cups are also worth the buy! I was surprised with how many animals were out today since it had been raining all week and in the morning but by afternoon all the animals could be seen prancing around! The butterfly exhibit is open now as well! This zoo is doing great! Keep up the great work guys!
We visited for the first time on July 4th. There is a great assortment of animals. Enclosures are interesting, natural looking, and clean. I liked the selections in the gift shop, and appreciated that they weren't trying to sell things on every corner of the zoo. Even with the heat that day, we were able to see at least one of almost all the animals. The penguin exhibit was closed for renovation and the train was not active. They're only losing a star because several times we were unsure which way to go or what animal was in an exhibit due to lack of signage. We were told we could access a map by scanning a QR code but were unable to find the map on the website. We would visit again.

I love it every time I come. I just wish the penguin exhibit was open the past two times I've come but I hope the next time we're here they'll be open and have a great closure for them! Zoo boo was amazing, my kids had a blast. First time coming to this and it didn't disappoint. Thanks for being open and a friendly environment!

Gorgeous zoo! We enjoyed the gardens as much as the animals. Bathrooms were also clean, which is a plus with kiddos. The kids also liked the roaming peacocks. We are visiting from out of town and were disappointed to find the penguin exhibit closed and the butterfly/bird exhibit closed to a private event. Some of the snack shops closed early (3:15pm) with no posted hours and guests standing by ready to order.

Such a fun place to visit with my family! It was a real treat to see the baby chimps interacting with the elder chimps! And, observing the mother polar bear interacting with her cub was just awesome! Her attentiveness was impressive! She had her eyes on her cub the entire time, especially when she went swimming. The Detroit Zoo was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone! Take your family or go solo, you'll definitely enjoy it!

Great exhibits that make it seem like the animals are in there natural habitats. Train ride is a must! Artic Ring of Life is a must see.
This place is amazing to go to if you like animals, and amazing customer service. I suggest you ride the train to the back because that is where all the cool animals are. If you go on the train you have a really nice view to see. Me and my family loved walking and exploring animals, I totally recommend! ❤️????
We didn't get to explore the whole zoo but to what we got to see it was a nice zoo. Kinda was chilly when we went so we will come back again hopefully to see the whole zoo next time.

I was talked into going here for the lights... WOW I was amazed at how cool this was, for $ this was worth it I would come back again for sure... they put allot of effort into making this very enjoyable. The detail was amazing on these displays
I went for a private event from 6 to 9. So alot of things were closed which I expect could happen. But didn't see alot of animals. Never could find the gorillas not out at all, no grizzly bears in sight or the rhinos either :/ just didn't see as many animals as we thought we would. 2 hour drive with a 5 year old for the little we saw not fun lol
$16–20
Went for the light show. Was done very well and we all enjoyed it ????

My fiancee and I went to see the Zoo Lights for the first time. The hot chocolate was much too sweet, and the weather was pretty cold, but the lights were beautiful.

It was nice! I didn't buy tickets in advance and it was sold out online but when I showed up,, they still let me get tickets and enter. There was a good amount of animals. The few indoor observation places all had lines because they limit the # of people inside at a time, per covid protocols. Penguins Observatory CLOSED! I was there for the Penguins but couldn't see them, sad. Not sure if its because I was there on Memorial day but only 1-2 concession stands was open. There were very long lines because there was only a single person working each spot. Bring your own food and drinks. If you have children, bring a wagon. My two little bros were definitely wiped out by all the walking.
