Here you will see the feddbacks of people like you who consume the services and products of Edmonton Valley Zoo (Zoo) in the territory close to Alberta (Canada).
As of day the business receives a rating of 4 stars over 5 and that rating is based on 127 reviews.
You may have noticed that it has an average rating is really good, and it's based on a large number of reviews, so we can say that the valuation is quite faithful. If there are many people who bothered to evaluate when they've done well, is that it works.
As you know, we do not usually stop to place feddbacks when they are good and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Zoo belongs to the category of Zoo.
Amazing place for children, clean, organized, ppl are very friendly, spend minimum 1 hour
Went during Zoominesence, the lights were very stunning. The zoo itself is beautiful during the winter and we were able to see several animals we don't normally see in the heat of the summer. The size of this zoo makes it really great for kids. There are also many newly renovated sections of the zoo with new exhibits, so that made it even more interesting!
It's a good place with Lucy the elephant, tiger, snakes, owls etc...had a good time.. Emerald tree boa and capybara was my favorite...forgot to mention, there are kangaroos too.
Great little zoo, I always enjoy coming here with my family
My kids loved it here! So much to see and do! The carousel was a hit as was the train ride, we got to see Lucy the Elephant out for a walk and the zebras were happy to entertain! The petting zoo was a big hit too!
Nice place to spend time with family.
The Zoo with animals figures lighted up for Christmas, 2021.
Sad place, the tigers cage is smaller than my backyard. And there is only 1 elephant, elephants are SOCIAL animals…
It looks better since I went last time. My 5 year old enjoyed the activities more than the animals.
Nice outing for the family located in the heart of the city, friendly and informative staff, nice exhibits and many activities for children.
I love the Edmonton zoo. They are always making improvements to the zoo. My son and I go at least 3 times a year we do not get bored. He loves to keep an eye out for Lucy.
Wonderful to be able to visit as restrictions relax. Sad that we didn't get to see Lucy but her needs are more important than ours, of course. Was our first ever visit and for sure we will be back so we can hopefully see Lucy, the red pandas, and maybe even a tiger taking a swim. Entrance fee is cheaper than going to a movie!
It seems like not much has changed in the past 20-30 years for this zoo. I visited it recently and felt quite sad and disappointed that the majority of the animals are in such small confined cages. If they could just make better use of the space (vertically or otherwise) so that the birds could fly and the cats could run, etc I would feel much better about this zoo.
Been years since I was there, some nice upgrades done and more coming. The staff is knowledgable and they did a great job given the COVID restrictions. Great way to spend an afternoon.
We had a great time! Nice staff. Awesome animals!
Thanks for a great time when you hosted Pokémon at the zoo.
I've been going to this zoo since I can remember. The renovations and changes they have been making recently are incredible. The animals are better cared for and easier to observe. The amount of information about the animals is also abundant and clear. The best part of their operations is the small shows they put on that allow you to see the animals up close and learn how they are cared for at the zoo.
I give 5 starts to the hard work employees who work here, but Edmontonians deserve better quality.
The zoo was decent. Prices while there for food and drink were quite expensive. The elephant is the main attraction and she is treated with kindness and gentle touches.
This zoo is "smaller" compared to other big city zoos but has all sorts of animals to see (I.e. elephant, red pandas, seals, monkeys, etc). Went to their zoomienscence event and it was really amazing. Lots of lights and animals to see even at night :)
The Valley Zoo is one of my favorite places for outings with my family. The cost of admission is is great value for our family of six for a whole day, and it never fails that there are exhibits of interest to each of us when we go. We took advantage of the free admission on September 29 and we had a blast! Something new or not previously discovered awaits at every visit and it's a pretty cool spot for a picnic too! Looking forward to returning again and again!
Definetly not what i expected. Animals were great. Place was fairly busy and staff was outstanding. Only food choices at the time were 8$ sandwiches, pastries, icecream and vending machine food. (They were in a transition period) sadly we didn't get to see lucy. Overall a decent experience.
We booked a visit online and it was only $15 per person. We came at the end of the day on a weekday, near 4PM, and it was not crowded at all. It took us about 1.5h to walk the whole zoo - there's a lot of area to cover. Unfortunately, a number of exhibits were closed and it was hard to tell if it was closed or the animals were just shy. Lucy the elephant is still on sabbatical ????. The cutest thing here was the red panda ????
I love the zoo and all its finished and ongoing projects! Love the animals and the continuation of upgrades to their habitats.
PLEASE STOP SUPPORTING THIS ZOO. This place is one of the worst zoos I have seen besides Lloydminster zoo. This place should be closed down. Seeing Lucy being neglected is inhumane. Hurts my heart and is on every level unethical. The fact that the zoo was offered free assessments for Lucy who has lived her life in the unfit, subzero temperatures of Northern Alberta with no family is beyond sad. This zoo denied top professional vet help including Cher who wants nothing but the best for this elephant. They would not benefit off of Lucy and only have her best interest at heart. It is the Edmonton Valley Zoo that has denied this help and best interest for Lucy...it is beyond outrageous. Have assessments done outside the people that make money off of her presence in this zoo. Animals have rights.. Lucy has rights. and they do not belong in the hands of people using them for financial benefit. Sad and sickened by the people entrusted with Lucy and all the animals care. This goes to show that Lucy is nothing more than a money maker for this establishment. Send them to sanctuaries where they should live out the remainder of lives.
Very very from what I've expected. Turns out, EVZ is a perfect place to go with the whole fam! I love how they preserved the whole location, they are really pro environment both flora and fauna. Staff are very friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. This is our first time visiting the facility and yes! We will definitely come back, weather permitted and mostly when it is safe (covid safe) 5 stars for Edmonton Valley Zoo ❤
Such an iconic story behind this amazing piece of Edmonton, the early years the zoo was pretty sparse but now that money has been injected into this awesome facility, super modern exhibits , lots of free parking and the staff are always amazing, dont compare our zoo to San Diego but ours is pretty awesome
Although i would love to see more exhibits in Edmonton Valley Zoo in near future- this is still a good one. You can visit the zoo in less than 2 hours altogether. Its a lot fun in the summer than in the winter to visit the zoo. During winter, they have the Christmas zoo lights - good place for photoshoot just before sunset. Visiting the zoo when the temperature outside was -12DegC was good indeed.
We are falling in love with this place. Very food for kids and for family????????????????????
Couldn't barley walk everyone is crowded together like a bunch of animals who don't know what 6 feet means and had to rush through cause if not you have people hovering right on top of you it was a JOKE my poor kids didn't even get to see animals the employees don't seem to care either because I was in and out in 25 mins and that's only because I was being respectful staying back away from people if I could give this NO STAR'S I would! DO NOT RECOMMEND WHILE THIS IS GOING ON!! HORRIBLE TIME AND A BUNCH OF SWEATY CROWDED PEOPLE I mean if you wanna get sick go ahead.
I hadn't been to the zoo in years. I was surprised by all the changes. Admission prices are reasonable will definitely go back next year.
It's nice but could use some work .
It has come a long way and the zoo is doing a lot to improve but it is still mediocre compared to other zoos. The concessions are very expensive but I do always have a great time when I go.
One of the best zoos ever! Especially love the aquatic areas, the red panda habitat, and the goat roof!
Great place for kids, even in the winter. Knowledgeable staff. The really need to gently & gracefully move their one elephant to a refuge with other elephants. Ask Lek elephant rescue for advice. She's very smart.
Well.. attractive and educated but when we went there on Wednesday around 10am, 90%animals were hiding or still sleeps perhaps. I can't find pinguin and hippos there. I missed Calgary zoo since we moved from Calgary to 2hours north of edmonton ..
Very unimpressed. Half the zoo is closed, very limited animals. All indoor facilities are closed but required to wear a mask out doors makes no sense to me. Security asked us to put our mask on and briefly after telling him the rules are manipulated at your facility, he agreed they were ridiculous as well and let us on our way. Good way to waste some time but should be free if you guys close 60% of the place
Was a blast nice low numbers of people the kids really got to spend some good time at each animal and daughter was very happy to spot Lucy out for her walk as we were told we wouldn't be able to see her unless she was out for her morning stroll. Will definitely be back
Impressed with the renovations the zoo has completed in the last few years. Kids LOVED the meltaway area.
They take great care of the animals, and the light show in the winter is great!
Not the hugest zoo ever, but really well laid out. The exhibits are interesting and well presented, the staff are super friendly and knowledgeable. Bear in mind we explored the zoo in the winter and still had a good day.
Had an absolutely amazing experience! Covid friendly & the staff are very helpful & willing to explain things to the kids :)
Just the right amount of zoo for young children. Takes maybe 60-90 minutes to get through which is just long enough for a quick outing. Staff are very friendly and helpful. It is best to go first thing in the morning before crowds. Price is quite reasonable.
Had a great day at the zoo today it was free to the whole city so it was a zoo if you know what I mean lol the only thing that sucked most of the stuff was closed so we didn't get to see all the stuff we wanted
We had a good time! Didn't get to see Lucy while we were there. Couldnt find her anywhere! We visited from BC!
Couldn't see red panda..but it was for my little daughter who enjoyed alot ..worth it
It is a really beautiful place! I always feel complexed when I think of zoos but it makes my heart happy to see these animals have nice safe homes. They definitely do a great job of not overcrowding the animals, very clean as well. It was fun to go! Got to see a lot of animals too!
Had a good time here, was nice seeing the different animals (even though some looked tired or old). Definitely recommend for kids.
Large selection of zoo animals has a cool app
Saw Lucy the elephant on her walk twice today and Zeus the bald eagle . Some areas were blocked died off for construction/ renovation.
Had a great visit, thanks to covid it was almost empty, allowing us to see everything
The 40 Acres restaurant here is a miserable fail. It is advertised as their urban farm restaurant bringing local food inspiration to the menu. The reality is this place is disgusting and very high prices for the quality of food they serve. The staff is overwhelmed and can't keep up to delivery. They didn't have chicken tenders that were on their menu and the bannock for the bannock blt "hadn't been made yet" at 1pm. The pass bar was being operated by a 12 year old who had no idea what they were doing. My Montreal smoked meat sandwich was the texture of beef jerky and served room temp. Avoid this place at all costs, opt for the sandwich place at the main entrance.
Half the zoo was closed for construction, however still charged full price to see a quarter of the usual animals. Didn't offer any signs saying zoo was under construction till after you pay, a little dirty tactic, but still a bit of fun.
Been visiting this zoo for 20 years and while it is not the biggest or best, I'm happy to call it Edmonton's. The conservation efforts and animal care are obviously a priority. The upgrades to so many habitats a pleasure to see. I'm particularly fond of the Red Pandas and Otters. Best time to go is first thing!
We attended the Zooescence this Dec 2021 and had a lot of fun.
Went with my family. The animals looked very stressed and it was a bit upsetting... other than that, the kids had fun and the covid precautions were handled well and it was a good day
Didn't even get completely through the zoo and went to stop for a bite with my wife son and mother at 40 acres and it took them an hour and my son to be screaming for food to come out and when it did come out it looked like hell. Not impressed with the service or quality of the food.
Love all the activities that the Zoo has been having. Makes it fun to go back to more regularly. They always have a daily program of talks and activities that you can attend. It makes bringing there for hours easy.
Still in need of maor renovation and upgrade. A bit disappointing. Animal signage is small. Several areas closed.
it was cool, those ppl had pretty good quality fursuits and it was quite a large venue for a furry convention. Sadly everyone was full RP and did not speak to me. there was one VERY cute wolf though O.O :3 i hope in the future they do live yiff. 4 stars
I always liked our small zoo, but it is far nicer since they renovated!! We went today and had a great time. All of the employees were super nice, but we had a particularly good experience with a guy named Chris. He spent time teaching us about Red Pandas and answered all our questions.
Construction is making it much better. Love the new petting zoo. Those upset about Lucy need to do their actual research and not believe the first thing you read.
We haven't been to the zoo in a few years and I was impressed. It has improved a lot since I was last there. They have good measures in place for covid and if masks are difficult for you. You only have to wear them if you decide to go inside one of the builsings otherwise you don't need to wear them. It was a great place to go for a walk and enjoy the weather.
We really like this zoo. No it doesn't compare to the Calgary Zoo or any of those larger zoos, but it is a great walk for the family. They have a good variety of animals and if your lucky you may see the Elephant too! We bought a family pass so we can go more often to enjoy the animals.
Loved the fact that they had numerous animals with disabilities that they were taking care of and giving them a safe home
It’s a wonderful round of renovations that have been completed at the zoo. The habitats and exhibits are well done and offer excellent views of the animals. The staff to animal ratio seems very high and on top of that the elephant is often just walking around to the delight of my children.
Zoo constantly seems to be under construction.. can only ever see half the animals. And its a zoo... don't understand why these things are still around to be honest. Its depressing as an adult.
it was set up for a short quick day and was set up that kept my young grandson engaged.
I liked to take photos of the animals and learn all about them! The workers there were really helpful and showed us where the animals were if we couldn't find them.
Only outdoor sections open right now. Still a great walk, saw some animals. Kids loved it.
was fun and enjoyable.......food vendors were a little expensive
Always an amazing place to explore.
It’s a wonderful place to go to. Going to ZooBrew, one of their premier events, you really see that the people who work at the Valley Zoo enjoy what they do for a living. Their passion can be seen through the events and overall friendliness. 5 stars all round.
Some enclosures could be bigger, but they're working on it. Otherwise the enclosures are clean and the animals appear to be well-kept.
Oh my God! Love the nature of it, healthy animals and playful. Get here and see for yourself.
PERFECT PLACE TO TAKE THE KIDS TOO.... lots of kool animals and way more then I thought there would be. Staff are super knowledgeable and know their animals. Check this place out!!!!
We went for Zoominecince. There were light sculptures and many indoor exhibits to warm up in. There were many exhibits that either closed by the time we got there like the tiger goes to sleep at 7pm, or I felt we missed due to the confusing layout of the zoo. Additionally it was nearly impossible to see a lot of the animals that were outside, due to the lack of lighting. This event would benefit from a downloadable map with a routing feature and exhibit list. As well as better exhibit lighting. You may consider bringing without heated blankets and a wagon for the kids, and a touque, mitts and a hot coffee for yourself. You will be colder than you think.
Why does a grazing camel have more space to roam than a tiger or wolf? Why does Lucy get walked around the outside of the zoo where nobody can enjoy her instead of having a much larger exhibit where we need to walk around HER (may I add why TF didn’t Lucy get moved to a sanctuary when Calgary sent their elephants, don’t say “health issues”. You’re telling me she can walk around for hours every day but wouldn’t survive a 5 hour flight, or day long transport to somewhere warm with a herd of elephants) This floor plan just doesn’t make sense and these animals are very obviously depressed. (If you know anything about animal behaviour) This zoo is an embarrassment and a sad place for animals to be living. Literally every exhibit is smaller than what you would assume is even legal. I don’t know how people are still supporting it, sure the new infrastructure looks nice but where are the benefits for the animals? The only reasonable reason to be here is to keep a child busy. You literally get to see 20 sleeping and bored pacing animals, half of the zoo is closed, waste of money.
Always fun and educational! Great place to walk and see amazing animals.
Great for young kids. It's a small zoo so you likely wouldn't spend a whole day here but it's good for a morning or afternoon activity. My 3 year old likes the rocks/glacier/beaver dam area and will climb on them for hours (go left at the entrance past the seals). He also likes the train and rides. The train is often in a different area with construction so you might have to look for it or ask someone.
I liked all the habitats, I just wished they had a more bright and fun atmosphere. It was in a lot of construction so I can't really fault them for that. The staff we did pass near were friendly and informative
We have been here before and it wasn't all that impressive but the kids liked it and that's what counts. Last time though we went to their zoominescence event, and that, the kids didn't enjoy. It was dark so all we got to see were a couple sheeps and yes they had some nice lights displays but nowhere near enough to wow the little ones. We will return, during the day.
Went to see Zoominesence? and what a wonderful display of Christmas lighting. Absolutely magical. Was too dark to see many animals but the lights and colors made up for this. Walkways, despite gravel down, were very slippy in spots. Will certainly attend this event again as was our first visit during this annual celebration.
Honestly some of the older habitats are hard to enjoy. BUT, I know the Zoo is very busy working on improvements. It has been nice to see this Zoo grow from what it used to be! The food options are so much better than they once were. There is a great wading stream/rock climbing area, and there are lots of picnic spots if you choose to bring your own foid. The more we support this Zoo the better it can improve ????
Online purchase option was a waste of time as waiting in line was lengthy. Otter bubble view is covered in algae and viewing through the window was impossible. Other pools of water and stream ways are full algae and decrepit. Trash and recycle bins were too near some of the viewing areas as they attracted wasps. Some family members are alergic to wasps. Leaving dead carcasses for the birds of prey were deplorable as they layed in the heat untouched. Enclosures for the birds of prey looked unclean. Although leaving one star, Iam extremely dissappointed at the lifelessness in the animals and birds of this continent.
Amazing place to visit!
Lots of good walking and finally got to see the otters!
Nice spot for kids ..one time visit for everyone else. Due to covid everything inside was not open but it was well organized. Rest it was a good experience overall.
We visited the zoo today. My 7 year was on a school trip, and we tagged along with our 2 years old. Mind you it’s spring and the it’s warm but not for all the animals to be out and about. We saw the Leopard, wolves, a tiger, bunch of zebras but could see Lucy the elephant. I would suggest going their April onwards. Great nice place with a cafe, vending machines and an ATM. I wanted to see more animals but it was still cold and the trails were icy and wet. I have attached the map and other important info about the place have a look and enjoy.
This is a very nice place. The place is big, clean and the animal habitats are well maintained. Some places smelled pretty smelly but that's the animal's fault. Like any zoo they have explainations for each animals and "did you knows". The only reason this place lost a star is because the elephant thing was late from when it was scheduled but that wasnt a really big deal.
Emu's foot was huge (wow) nice new facilities!
Save Lucy! The living conditions in this place for not only Lucy but all their animals is horrific, unnatural and inhuman. Change needs to happen immediately! It's disgusting.
Just a lovely sized zoo, plenty to do.
Not a big as the calgary zoo but considerably cheaper and way nicer staff and way less crowds. Got a season pass and me and my 4 year old go there all the time he loves it.
What a fun place place to spend the day! Supporting the zoo supports all the cute animals you would not be able to see otherwise in your everyday life! ???? The staff and the animals are all amazing. I suggest buying your tickets online before arrival and spend the day/ take your time. The poison frogs are my favorite. We can't wait to go back.
Full disclosure, I was considering booking the Otter room for an event but haven't actually booked anything yet, so not too sure on service. But, the facility itself is gorgeous, the city has done amazing work in putting together a visually stunning building. They include tables and chairs in a booking, and I believe you can rent out exclusive after-hours access to the zoo if you book an event there. Its the zoo so tons of parking with tons of standard Edmonton-sized pot holes, make sure to drive slowly , it's pretty brutal. Still, awesome potential spot for a private party.
Sad to see the condition of the enclosures and the animals are visibly depressed..
We just visited the zoo for the Zoominesence Christmas celebration. What a wonderful event. We had no idea what you expect and we were pleasantly surprised. Almost the entire zoo was open. Almost all of the animals were able to be seen (many were markedly more active than during our day visits). There were great Christmas lights throughout the zoo. There were talks feedings throughout the night. There was skating and hot chocolate. And that best thing of all....there was almost no one there. They limited tickets, so the zoo still feels "empty" while you're enjoying the exhibits. Thank you EVZ for a great Christmas event.
A great place to visit with the family. Specially great for kids and animal lovers. All animals seem to be very well taken care of and everything is nice and clean. There are lots of attractions for kids, including Mary go rounds. The friendly old female elephant was walking freely around the premises (with her trainer) Good food and lots of places to sit down with shade and air conditioner. Can’t wait to go back with the kids :) * If you find this review helpful, please give it a like
Zoo's are always a tense experience. Seeing animals who should roam free kept in small cages for our amusement is horrific. This zoo has some of the smallest spaces I have ever seen. I was really disappointed...
Beautiful zoo, prime location. Not too large and wonderfully represented by the staff
It is good value, some amazing animals. The staff have so much passion and care for what they do. Took the time to talk with us and just made the experience amazing. Got to say never seen a house cat a Zoo, hope it's happy. The only thing that really was not great to see is the cow and which industry sponsored it. To me a zoo cow should not be sponsored by the Alberta Beef Producers, I truely believe this hurts the image of Zoo and what they stand for, Conservation. Not being a livestock resource.
Heyyo, the Red Pandas are increasingly beautiful and same with the other animals and there's also a nice farm animal petting area as well as a train ride for the kids. My son really enjoyed our family trip there and there was also lots of parking space so no issues trying to park.
But quiet due on a cloudy Wednesday afternoon. Perfect time to just hang out with the family.
Got tickets here for opening day. They did a good job of limiting the amount of people entering at a time. Masks are mandatory even though access is all outdoors. They have masks available at the door in case you forget. There was not too many animals out and the ones that were, did not have much energy. The otters were swimming around a bit. The Zebras were sleeping, the Tiger was walking around a bit. The Zoo is appealing to kids, however as an adult I'm not generally too impressed. The animals look old and sick. Unfortunately the Calgary Zoo will out-rank the Edmonton Zoo any day so i would rather take the road-trip. However it is a nice picnic area and a way to spent the day outdoors with family and the kids really enjoy themselves so thats all that matters.
The zoo was decent. Prices while there for food and drink were quite expensive. The elephant is the main attraction and she is treated with kindness and gentle touches.
We had such a great time at the zoo! We go at least once a year in the summertime (usually). It’s always good for a couple hours of wandering, learning, and checking out the animals. The ice cream is also excellent - there’s 2 opportunities to get some, and they both take card or cash. The COVID measures were well thought out. You have to pre-buy tickets, and there are only a certain number within each time frame. You have to show up within your thirty minute window as well. Masks are mandatory within the indoor spaces, and the amount of groups allowed inside is limited - you are also not allowed to pass other groups. Overall, we enjoyed the hot weather, the ice cream, and all of the animals we saw! It’s always a fun time at the Valley Zoo. :)
Don’t go here, a lot of the enclosures are not large enough, this zoo clearly does not have enough funding for the amount of animals they have, shame on them for how they treat that poor elephant, they’re social creatures and you keep her alone and neglected, even American celebrities have tried to help this elephant that’s how bad it is.
Lots of fun for all ages.
Zoo's are always a tense experience. Seeing animals who should roam free kept in small cages for our amusement is horrific. This zoo has some of the smallest spaces I have ever seen. I was really disappointed...
Loved our visit!! Haven't been to the zoo in a couple of years. $50 for the family, fairly reasonable price. Everyone enjoyed the gibbon, meeting the Children's Python, following Lucy on her walk, a cramming into the train and carousel.
We went for zoo lights. It was so cold. A nice walk, however the paths were so icy. I think a better job could have been done.
One guy at gates skipped my daughter intentionally while he was explaining about an animal skull to all kids in line up 1 by 1. He have seen us but never wished or even tried to talk to me or my daughter. He was talking to all others, greeting them and all. I am a very friendly person. Was not even upset or angry at anything that time. Because i was excited to see what animals are there, as it was my first visit to this zoo. And me and my daughters are animal lovers. May i know why he did that? Not much animals to see, the enclosures of birds were dirty and please have paved parking, each passing car blew dust in the air and on to the faces of people walking.
Beautiful day at the zoo everything was clearly labeled and lots of sanitizer stations. Definitely fun and safe family outing to do during COVID.
Typical zoo, they have couple of tigers, some other cats, elephant, seal area, and some random animals. Small boating area, and a mini train as well. Small animals like goats, sheeps and calfs are there for petting. You can picnic outside the zoo area in valley river area.
I feel like this shouldn't be called a Zoo but rather a Sanctuary. The staff are always friendly and helpful. The programs and daily schedule is easy to find. My advice is..... don't go there expecting to see a lot. Some days you do, some days you don't. These are animals. They are living and breathing things and don't care if you want to see them. Overall if you make day of it, its worth the price. Buy lunch at one of the vendors or places. or have a picnic on the hill or table.
We loved our visit to the Zoo. Took part in the BOO at the Zoo activities which were well done and very COVID friendly. All routes and markings were easy to follow and well laid out.
Perfect spot for kids…
Great way to spend a day with family and friends.
Some really great improvements over the past few years here. Lovely new exhibits and some great habitats for the animals. Still lots more work needs to be done, especially for the big cats but they are getting there! Covid-19 protocols are in place with a one way path around most of the zoo. Masks mandatory. Take your own hand sanitiser as the stations are few and far between. A good experience for kids and adults alike!
Got to go behind the scenes. It's clear the keepers and volunteers here care deeply about the care and conversation of their animals. The prep kitchen, grain room, and back of animal facilities was spotless, I was shocked at how clean and orderly everything is behind the scenes! Staff were EXTREMELY happy, knowledgeable and helpful.
Excellent Edmonton Valley Zoo. It's an excellent place for family visits and takes in the sights. The Zoo is small but wonderfully represented by the staff. I really enjoy the Zoo. They work hard to provide a good home for the animals.Highly recommend!
Loved walking trails around the zoo, will never forget the look on my son's face when he saw a real life tiger
Really enjoyed the zoominescence experience. Kids really enjoyed being able to see some animals as well as all the light exhibits
Always enjoyed the winter months at the zoo and the functions they put on.
Always enjoyed the winter months at the zoo and the functions they put on.
It's good place to learn about animals..but when we went there recently many places were under construction and not allowed to visit..
Zoos themselves aren't great but the variety of animals are great here. The elephant is always something you should see. Most animals are nocturnal so don't be surprised if you don't see many. Clean and happy looking animals
Visited during Zoomenescence. Will definitely be back as was our first visit during this Christmas light show. Absolutely amazing however not many critters viewed as too dark. Lights were magical. Very icy in spots due to rain the other day and dispute gravel being down.
Very nice light displays in general. Seems very odd to require masks to be worn when there is very few people visiting and everything is outside. No indoor venues available other than the washrooms, and they have added arrows so that everyone goes in the same direction around the zoo. Was a nice evening out with family there is very few animals to be seen as most are closed or blocked off for viewing.
Not that I should compare one animal prison to another, but Edmonton Zoo really isn’t anything to brag about. The facility is quite small in comparison to most other zoos in Canada, the caged areas for each animals seems almost cruel in it’s minuscule sizing, and actually animal attractions are limited. I suppose this park is fine for a school trip within city limits or general visitation if you are unable to go to the Calgary Zoo, but otherwise the Edmonton Zoo isn’t your best option to view local and exotic wildlife.
The zoo was great we took our time and enjoyed the scenery there are 350 animals at the zoo! Lots of space and a mixture of indoor and outdoor habitats.
On the global scope of zoos Edmonton's zoo is small but well equipped and undergoing significant modernizations. I'm proud of their efforts to see the best possible conditions for their charges and won't hesitate to visit again soon!
I've been to the valley zoo around 10 times in the past 8 years. To say the least, it is very unimpressive. I have never gotten to see a lot of animals when I am there. They always seem to be sleeping or hiding and when they are out they look so depressed. Also, the animals are difficult to see because they put up massive fences all over the place and you can only see the animals from like 30 feet away in most cases. This was probably the last time I will waste my money taking my kids here.
The absolute worst zoo I have ever been to. Over half the zoo is either closed or under construction, a fact that the website does not mention. Of the exhibits that aren’t under construction, a large portion are empty. The majority of the attractions are also closed, leaving no activities to distract you from there being no animals. I understand that there needs to be construction sometimes, but there is no justification for charging full admission price when this zoo looks like it currently does.
The Zoo is a classic place to go and how could you not like it! I do wish there was some more info on why the birds are in the zoo, what some exhibits are empty, and why the space for tigers is tiny, but lamas and camels is huge. I honestly miss the Mother Goose / Nursery Rhymes section as well.
Best family weekend at valley zoo, place is clean, animals are lovely and the train its a bonus.
It's a small zoo! But perfect for little kids to see in a couple of hours. If you have a kid who loves looking at animals..they have an annual pass which can be best used in summer in my opinion. They are open late on one day of the week in summer and it's works to be a great picnic spot too
Step up your game Edmonton cause this is an embarrassment compared to Calgary or Winnipeg Zoo.... It be better if admission was free...
Great for families with young kids
Not all exhibits open yet. Great Covid protocol although did see a few with no masks and noone seemed to do anything about it.
It was good! I honestly thought there would be more but overall I had fun!
Always a good experience with my family. The family lead for the summer is very inexpensive and a great day trip with two little kids. The staff is always very friendly, courteous and helpful. I have been here many times and will go back many more!
The elephant Lucy is my favorite character in the zoo!!
I love this zoo! Everything is so well maintained. I will be back when I visit Edmonton again!
Great for picnics and open green areas. However, animals were scarce, many were not even in their cages. Calgary zoo is definitely better.
Had lots of fun here with my family when we took my 4 1/2 yr old Nephew. They are making some renovations so we are looking forward to seeing it when they are done. There were lots of staff around and demo's. The highlight was seeing Lucy the elephant take her afternoon walk through the park...really close.
Very nice place and great staffs. But, need some makeovers for sure...most of the cages are empty and looks like we are walking through a walking trails than in a Zoo. Need more shops and restaurants inside. Parking lots have to paved as well.
having fun in the afternoon. A lot of animals there. Actually it surprises me. I thought it's a really small zoo.they have North american river otter, skunks, kea, makira outpost, red panda, urban farm, elephant, red fox, large carnivores (Amur tiger), satio centre, white handed gibbon, birds of prey, grevy's zebra, bighorn shrrp, honeybees, reindeer, tamin, guanaco, bactrian camel, polar extremes. Red panda is my favourite. they are so adorable!!
Zoo has definitely seen better days. It was ok. That's about the best review I can give it.
It’s a decent zoo. Could be better!!
Attended Zoominessence with the family. We all enjoyed seeing the beautiful light/art displays and some animals - especially the birds of prey. We were also pleased with how they adapted this annual event to adhere to pandemic guidelines.
Please retire Lucy the elephant!!! Elephants should not be kept alone or live in freezing cold of canadian winter or be kept in small cement enclosure. This is beyond heartbreaking
Most sections and enclosure were shut-off due to covid restrictions. But the kids enjoyed the areas that were open to the public.
Nice place, specially for the kids!
Great experience. Disappointed the elephant was off on a walk. Super friendly staff.
Always been fond of visiting zoos around the world. Not much variety of animals but definitely different kinds of (at least i haven't seen few). Urban farm inside the zoo was new experience for me. I went there with my niece and she had …
Half the existing enclosures here are empty. What you do see is nice but more work is needed here to get this to a zoo you can be proud of. My family and I love the Calgary Zoo and wish the Edmonton Zoo would partner up or learn from what Calgary is doing to make the experience here in Edmonton exceptional.
animals are not for entertainment especially the way you all keep yours. absolutely disgusting
It was okay. Had fun. Good for about 2-3 hours of fun. The price is fine for what you get.
I've never rated anything here as a 5 out of 5 before. This place EASILY does it! My daughter who climbs, explores, enjoys nature and fun loves it and couldn't get enough of the place. I haven't been to a zoo since I was 3 and that was the Calgary Zoo so when my daughter turned 3 I decided to take her there and wow! What a well designed place! A great mix of interactive attractions for the kids and wild animals. We had our best day in Edmonton there and we're going back for sure! Highlights were the big predators (for dad/me) and the monkeys, elephants and seals for my daughter ???????? We easily spent 3.5 hours there - 5 stars easily!
It's ok but I feel like it needs more animals. Anytime I visit it seems like the animals are always hiding or napping. They have done some renovations and they are quite nice. They need to give better instructions to people who might not necessarily go there often or have never been regarding where they take Lucy for her walk. We sat by her area and it turned out it was not even there that we should have been but somewhere further away.
Amazing experience! Staff was wonderful (huge shout out to the gentleman on security, he was knowledgable and so friendly) and most everything is open and available to see (Lucy was off for the day). The scenery and paths were beautiful and well kept. Definitely recommend if you're in Edmonton
This facility should get 0 stars because of their poor management of Lucy the Elephant alone never mind the rest of the dump. Disgraceful conditions in which this poor elephant lives, the zoo continues to deceive the public about Lucy's health and her options for transport to sanctuary. She should have been retired a long time ago, keeping her alone is cruel. Where is her pool? As for the rest of the place, it's generally poor as well. The animals housed here are suffering. The only decent areas are those for the general public. Citizens should be ashamed of this so called attraction. Shame on the City of Edmonton.
We really enjoyed this medium sized zoo. Loved the fact that there were lots of places in the shade to sit and rest. We were entertained by the red pandas especially the one that tried to make it's escape up the stairs out the door following the handler. Find the food expensive but hopefully it supports the zoo.
Spent time with my two years old to attend the Halloween event here.
Zoo was great, but it was sad to see so much blocked off for "social distancing". Looking forward to returning when more is open. Felt bad for this hansom guy but glad he is well taken care of.
It's a cute little zoo, about the right size for kids to be entertained and see some wonderful animals. I know zoos can be a bit contentious and I know animals being in their wild habitat is best. But the staff were all kind and caring for the animals. The facility is undergoing renovations that will be great to see down the road and I hope helps the animals that are there have the best lives they can. Worth checking out if you are in the city looking for something to do.
Always a great place to visit in the heart of Edmonton. The animals here are loved and very well cared for. The staff really know their stuff and they have all the covid precautions in place to make your visit safe.
Lovely zoo. Friendly staff with informative signs and clean walkways. You can tell they put in effort into keeping the zoo tidy. The tiger was the coolest animal I saw
I love e the zoo and wanted to give it five stars, but unfortunately a lot of the zoo is being reconstructed, what we did see of the grounds was gorgeous the views were amazing and the petting zoo was great.
Great thing to do on a whim or family outing. Been many of times and always enjoyed the experience, good value with ticket prices. However, opportunity arises in range and variety of animals and 2/3 times did …
Nice place, great directional signs. Most animals were asleep and couldn't really be sighted hence my rating. Otherwise lovely experience
It was a beautiful experience! My kids enjoyed a lot.
Please avoid this zoo. They are refusing to release Lucy to a sanctuary. She is sick and arthritic and been forced to amuse people. Ring/call the zoo to free her so she can retire in peace and warmth.
Excellent time. Very good covid precautions taken, felt safe and most the animals were out and about. My son had a blast
Great variety of animals, birds etc. Fun place to walk around.
Not to many animals were out, but it was hot! Nice walk!
not enough covered areas when it's raining. there isnt a lot of animals. feels dingy
Some nice animals, but a lot of it was Fairly depressing to be honest. Half of the exhibits were closed and a lot of Enclosures could really use some updating. The newer areas are much better. Wouldn’t go back tbh
Underwhelmed. A lot of enclosures were empty. No sign of the elephant for most of the day. The best area is the farm animals, and that's not what we paid to see. Need more animals that kids don't normally see at a petting zoo. The train ride that we lined up for 20 mins is less than 5 minutes. Skip it. Food vendors on site are very expensive..more than at an airport. 3 ice creams...$15. Sheesh. I saw other people bringing their own food. Good idea. ...this zoo needs improvement from the top down.
Great day at the zoo. Thank you to all the great parl staff who made my little guys first trip so fun!
What amazing and magical place!!! I love it!!! Today we went to the ZooMinesence event, funny, well organized and beautiful. This Zoo is a wonderful place, Lucy the elephant is kind and smart!!! Her pictures are kiud. I recommend for everybody, is a wonderful place to go with family.
Nothing special, disappointing, waste of time and money in my opinion. Big space, with almost nothing special to see.
Great little zoo close to home! Best to visit in the summer - but I have gone in winter and spring too. Kids under 2 are free! Currently lots of construction and some animals not out (May 2018). Once construction is complete it will be great again! We still enjoyed our visit.
The zoo itself was nice, but overshadowed by so many restrictions in place for covid scare that some areas couldn't be enjoyed. Staff was friendly and knowledgable. Will be great to see when renovations and covid panic are done.
Awesome covid break. Grab a frosty cold grown up beverage at the entrance
Not that big of a zoo, and most of the animals are not even available to see. Restrictions due to the covid plandemic are even more of a reason to not waste your money here.
I went with 4 kids and I like how spaced out it is kids could run freely and not bother anyone. COVID 19 RUINS ALL FUN with regards to any close experiences with the animals but it is perfect to get out for a couple hours . We went around for about 1.5 hours. The kids enjoyed ????
I love this place, I know that most people don't want to visit because the elephant is in bad shape and it seems that is not getting appropriate care but this time we saw her taking strolls through the paths and taking a shower outside, it was great being that close to an impressive animal. The rest of the zoo was great as usual. It would be nice to have more animals but I'm pretty sure that will make the zoo even more expensive
3/4 of the staff I spoke to were very unfriendly and not cheerful, the enclosures for some of the animals are too small (especially the bird cages) The elephant was not around, when I asked why not they said she was out for a walk or out of public view. The only reason we really wanted to go was to see her. There is a huge variety of animals to see, and a petting zoo which was great.
The zoo exhibits are very nice. Cleanliness is okay. The restaurant, food quality and eating area need some serious work. It took half an hour for the "fast food" type food to be placed on the pickup counter after ordering. We had an egg skillet, a salad and a kids burger, all pretty quick stuff to make. There was only one highchair in sight and it was being used. The rest were found outside later on. When we finally received our food, the egg skillet was not hot anymore, and we got an extra whole salad (which we threw out because we didn't need it). The indoor seating was completely full, and every table outside was not cleaned off. We cleaned a table off, wiped it ourselves and finally sat to eat. A few minutes into our meal an employee came by to clean the windows on the restaurant. There were 5 tables full of people in front of the windows and she said "maybe if I need to make you move I should come back another time" but then proceeded to go in behind us (barely any room to stand there) and wash the windows a couple of inches behind our heads. It was very unprofessional.
Lots of animals. Nice place for a walk! Got to see them take the Elephant for a walk through the zoo!
Could use better planning and design, the animals look sad and there are so few of them you forget you're in a zoo. Turns the whole experience into a philosophical under taking vs its intended purpose, entertainment. The Edmonton Valley Zoo fails dismally at its mission and almost convinces you, it's very existence, and places like it is faux-pas to nature.
They keep animals in the basement you wouldn't expect to see in a zoo
We had a fun filled family afternoon seeing all the animals at the zoo. Didn't get to see the elephant because it was supposedly out for a walk so that was disappointing. It would have been good if they had a schedule time for the elephant' s walks and relate that schedule to visitors so a person could plan around it.
Great place to go during the pandemic, booking online was fast and easy! ????????????
Nice place for kids
I was there a little early for spring and summer this year and most are under construction. I believe before summer everything will be ready and it will be exciting!
Quite a small zoo tucked away in a residential area. Nice zoo though
Zoo trips are always a fun thing to do as a family, even when they are disobedient it at least drains excessive amounts of energy, so they're a lot less difficult, come time for bed!
It's a fun place to go if you have kids, nieces or nephews but the construction work going takes away from the ambience of the location. Hopefully, once all construction work is finished we'll see the beauty of the venue.
We went on a night after the rain when all the animals came out. The work they are doing to upgrade the zoo is impressive and I am excited to see the final outcome. The new urban barn is excellent. Well thought out and a delight to visit.
Pretty lame light display. Come on Edmonton! We need to do better. The one at Calgary Zoo is 10 times better.
It is a wonderful place to visit on a very nice day or looking for a short walk while seeing some animals. I feel the time of day of your visit is very important; i went late in the afternoon and most of the animals were tired and sleeping. But the walk was definitely worth it
Very nice place to spend a day with the family. 4 stars because currently has a lot if construction. But I am sure once construction will be done it will be worth the wait.
Pretty good with the lights and animals. We enjoyed it
Great place to take your family. Very enjoyable venue. Food services left aittle to be desired.
Cute zoo
Nice little zoo. Great place to spend a couple hours outside with the family.
We had a good afternoon at the zoo. The kids love it here. The beaver dam climbing gym and merry-go-round were a huge hit. The kids love seeing all the animals. We went on a Thursday afternoon. Sadly the train was not running on this day as it was being used for staff training, this was disappointing. Also a few areas were blocked off, I assume for renovations? The Valley Zoo is great and the recently renovated parts are wonderful however some parts of the park show their age.
Probably my favorite happy place in Edmonton! I have always loved the zoo, and I'm so happy to see progress, new buildings, the animals are very well cared for, loved and in great shape. I even adopted the tiger(s) this week, and will most likely adopt more animals. These pics were taken March 12, 2019. I have over a thousand pictures of all the animals there...it's absolutely a lovely place to go for the entire day. Great gift shop, a nice café to eat and a lot more on site....and the parking is free.
I visited early morning on a weekday, expecting it to be relatively low action and likely would miss out on some displays. BUT, not the case! It was bustling with activity and zoo workers to educate me and my daughter about the animals!
It's was ok nothing exciting most of the exhibits were closed or either shut down for maintaince.
Always enjoyed the winter months at the zoo and the functions they put on.
My favourite place to take our two year old. So much fun. Staff are great. We especially appreciate when they mention that Lucy is out for a walk. Hidden gem of a place in Edmonton. Highly recommend chicken fingers and fries for lunch from 40 Acre. Feeds a family of three!
Love taking the kids to the zoo- great place to have a picnic and explore. Lots to see and do!
My bf and I visited this place. Even though it was quite a lineup, the line did move pretty fast, so I was happy not standing still in the hot sun for too long. Great place to spend along walking with friends / family / kids / everyone! Reasonable admission prices - I would recommend buying tickets online if need be - though we did moves fast , the long lineups itself could've been avoided if tickets were bought online. ????????
It is a small zoo, more of a local or regional attraction than a tourist attraction. It doesn't have a lot of big exhibits or showcases but I will give a plus rating for the staff, the cafe, and the programs that they put on. Perfect for a family and/or friends outing. The 2019 expansion/additions are really well done. The staff are great with kids. The food and drinks at the cafe are really good. It also does not take a long time to go through everything, an hour or two of walking.
A perfect inexpensive date day with animals that definitely will make your significant other 'daww'
It is small for a zoo, strolling from start to finish should take 2-3 hours. My kids enjoy it.
This Zoo is just getting better and better. It has been a long time since I was here and though the improvements are ongoing, so many new exhibits have opened and I look forward to seeing some the older exhibits get bigger and better. New ones are awesome, seals and otters especially. Definitely kid friendly and kids love it, even the big kids that take them. I sure would like to see the parking lot paved though, dusty and messy! ????????????????????
It's a medium sized zoo. Our weather makes it difficult to have a greater variety of animals or birds. Its clean. Kids will love it.
This was my first time at the zoo in a number of years. I love the renovations that have been done. I look forward to when they have completed the renovations. The staff are really helpful and fill of information. Lucy was out of her enclosure, eating fresh grass and her keepers were very good at answering my son's many questions.
The zoo itself is okay, I think with covid it has completely changed the whole experience of seeing the animals. There isn't much of a selection of animals to see compared to the Calgary zoo, but it is definitely a nice place to go with family on a nice day.
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a wonderful experience for young families. Not as fancy or as wide a selection of wildlife compared with other major city zoos, but a very Edmonton centered selection. Glad to have this facility and those that support it nearby. Wildlife, diversity, and our understanding and respect of the same are important parts of global citizenship. Would highly recommend a visit to all young families. I would note that about a whole third of my time was spent with the kids rolling down grass hills and exploring the rock maze area. The kids also spent a large amount of time looking at and laughing about young chickens, goats on the roof, and the mooing cows. Book a visit now. Support this great facility. Help it grow.
Lots of animals and unique play areas. The rock maze was a huge hit!
Kids enjoyed they're time as well as the adults. Friendly place to bring the fam jams.
It's a nice zoo, but i think it's quite small. There are few amount of animals.
Currently under construction with multiple renovations. This is a great zoo to take your little ones too. Love all of the climbing structures.
Lots of beautiful changes since the last time we visited but disappointed that many of the sanitizer stations were empty and the handwriting station had no soap. When I asked the custodial staff to refill soap, they said its not their area.
I don't normally go to the zoo but my partner wanted to go. This zoo definitely confirmed why I never go to this zoo at all. So many animals weren't seen, lots of closed down areas, the animals themselves didn't look healthy or well taken care of. Such a shame.
Looking really good after the face lift. I enjoyed the new urban farm area.
A zoo is all about animals. They have built a great place fun to visit and all but it needs more animals. Half the zoo is empty and even local animals like moose, deer and bears would be great.
Was a beautiful day, just wish I could have seen the elephant. They had pretty good covid protocols and hand sanitizer all over. Very kid friendly and stroller/wagon safe.
Positives: cheap admission fees, great gift shop, clean grounds and washrooms, new urban farm looks good and the entrance to the zoo is very modern and appealing. Negatives: small cages for animals, lots of closed sections in the zoo, hardly any animals outside on "display", the fencing is old and makes it difficult to take photos, saw no staff on our visit after we entered the gate, all of the rides were closed.
It's always good to take the family out to the zoo! Edmonton is a nice small zoo for little ones to not be too overwhelmed or worn out. There were a few....I'll call them oddities though. Why call it "polar extremes" when you don't have anything more then art structures and one animal? You have Arctic wolves and snowy owls but not in the polar area? Kind of a giant let down walking down that path thinking there would be more then that. Then your zebras. There were three when we went. One was off playing by himself. The other two were ...Well they looked like they were playing an adult only version of leap frog and hide the salami ....if that was clear enough the one was hung and wanted to show the world right before he mounted his friend and proceeded to traumatize the park with grunts and screaming!
Great place, even if the parking lot is busy it doesnt feel too bad once I side due to lots of space and outside exhibits. Advance tickets are great to skip the line on busy days. There are lots of information sessions for different animals through the day. The new urban farm is spacious and a great way to see different "farm" animals. The number of people with the animals are limited and the animals have inside areas so they can great a break from people which is great. We are looking forward to the rest of the new houses being completed.
Experience was great as a foreigner... Though quite a few exhibits were out of order, including the Arctic zone
Was here this April, not many animals out. What we seen was decent, but maybe not for the price we paid. Probably would be awesome in the summer!! Seen some new development/habitat being built. Would go back if ever in Edmonton in the summer time.
Good little zoo. Couldn't see the elephant due to covid, but otherwise almost everything was open. Pretty clean. Fun fact, we're from the west coast with seals and harbour porpoises 5 minutes away, but seeing them in the zoo blew the minds of my kids.
Lots of improvements to this zoo and some great history. Great place for kids and family.
Excellent family entertainment. The staff here work hard to ensure it's a different experience each time you visit. Rental strollers available for the young ones and loaner (free) wheelchairs for anyone not able to get around so well. Excellent new petting zoo area along with several food vendors at reasonable park prices.
Decently priced. Renovations were needed and definitely have modernized the look. There's a decent variety of animals... caught Lucy out and about and got some good close ups... well as close as we wanted to be to an elephant. Love the red pandas and their exhibit is quite impressive and expansive now. As my husband put it it's definitely the best zoo in Edmonton. ????
Good but with covid I thought people could have distanced a little more felt I had too distance myself from crowds pressed against animal habitat. Otherwise amazing they have goats on there roofs no joke pre cool
This zoo keeps animals in inhumane and disgusting conditions. Animals like Lucy should be in sanctuaries. It should be a crime to keep an elephant in such a small space and in our Canadian weather.
Found the set up for COVID kind of frustrating. The one way system kind of defeated the purpose where crowds easily formed trying to go through. Was also frustrated with bathroom access. My 4 year old nephew needed the washroom and of course he mentions this when we were quite far from one. We made our way to it and there was a worker there stating we needed masks. I understand for adults as I could easily put one on. But she insisted he have one too even after I stated we were rushing him to the washroom. The only mask they had was an adult sized one so she made us take the time to tie knots in the strings so it would fit his little face. We finally got into the building which again was another one way and had to wait for crowds to move out of the way for us to get to the washroom. We luckily made it and then had to continue following the one way through two buildings and more crowds just to get back out. Was not the greatest experience.
First time at Edmonton Valley Zoo. It's a nice facility. Quite a bit of construction going on and a few empty exhibits, but that's expected at almost all the zoos I've ever been to. The staff was friendly. More than enough shady areas and places to sit and take a rest. Gravel parking lot, but plenty of space.
Great small zoo, great for families and date nights. Looking forward to the next phase of development. Only zoo I know where they let an elephant walk around the grounds openly.
One more place in Edmonton to feel alive. Real natural walk. Here you'll feel the breeze and meet the animal. Not just a zoo it's a feeling of freshness. A Bird from NZ. Someone came from oceanic. The endangered species is also staying in peace here. The Eagles and the honeybees stay together.
Easy going place, spending quality time with my family.
Great place to spend summer time in nature with kids! Their collection of animal is wonderful, although we weren't luck enough to meet Lucy, the elephant!
Despite the frigid conditions, we had a really good visit. Lights were plentiful and colorful. Most pathways well maintained.
It's pretty good, but not the best zoo. They are slowly updating exhibits so that it does not look so dated.... But the Zoo still has an old feel.to it... But the staff and events do a great job at offering interactive and fun events.
Very organized and clean zoo. Amazing animals, helpful zookeepers, and friendly visitors.
Awesome place, it was my first time visit the Edmonton Zoo. It's been a great experience
Awesome place, it was my first time visit the Edmonton Zoo. It's been a great experience
Could have been the time of year, but there was very little animals to actually see and enjoy, other then monkeys and otters.
It was great to be outdoors. Told that the Calgary Zoo is nicer but I had fun.
The zoo itself is improving a lot. And has many good exhibits. My family and I had a good time. However! That being said. Avoid the sandwich and sons restaurant. We spent $47 for a turkey cranberry sandwich, a blt, grilled cheese and a bowl of soup. All except the grilled cheese went to the trash can. The mocha was poorly done. The whipped cream from a can saved it. The chai tea was ok. 8/10 wouldn't recommend.
We went during May long weekend. We had our annual passes so the line wasn’t something we had to worry about getting in. They are doing some construction on new structures but nothing that got in the way of seeing all the animals. It’s better to get to the zoo early as the day got warmer more of the animals sought out shade. Our little one loves seeing everything.
Cheap price for a whole variety of animals. Took 2 hours to see every exhibit. Many interesting facts for the animals.
The zoo was good. There is a lot of stuff under renovation but for the price it was good. Just bring your own snacks!
Way cheaper than I expected and a very chilled out way to spend a sunny afternoon. Not too crowded, even on a sunday
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is hot, without much to do in it. The zoo is clearly lacking funds, city council needs to give them more money to bolster the facilities and attractions.
Nice place to spend time with family. Unfortunately the elephant section was closed when we visited.
It was nice but didn't see Lucy as she was out on her walk. The zoo is now one way walking due to Covid. My grandson was disappointed. Will have to go back again!
The staff are super nice, nice modern buildings have been added, good selection in gift shop. There aren't as many animals as there once was, some you can't see anyway because of covid but the ones they do have are active. Go on a cloudy day! Animals are active when it's not hot out
Can't be compared to Calgary Zoo, it's good thou but not just much to see.
Awesome day at the zoo. A lot of improvements in landscaping and building since I was last here. It is sad that herd animals like zebra are in such a small group. It's so hard to winter them over in this latitude so I'm guessing they can't keep any herds. Nice to see the Takin have started to create a small group.
Disappointing, most of the zoo was selected off but there was nothing on the website and the staff didn't say anything when we purchased tickets. Seemed understaffed and dirty. Only 1 or 2 places to grab a snack were open with lines up and the vending machines were mostly empty. The inbuilding had a strong foul smell. They also didn't have any strollers or wagons to rent for small kids. Kids had more fun at the free park down the street. It's a pass for me.
Perfect spot for kids…
Staff awesome. Animals are ok. Defs not Calgary or Toronto zoo but good enough. Did a corporate event here and it went so smooth; great pathways; beautiful renos.
My husband and I go to the zoo almost every week, and we LOVE the time we spend here. I've been to many zoos in the US and Canada, and the Edmonton Valley Zoo is definitely one that we are happy to have so close to home. The animals seem happy and the enclosures have many forms of enrichment to keep the animals engaged in their environment. I also appreciate that some of the animals are rescues, and not simply plucked from the wild for our amusement. The staff are very knowledgeable and always happy to answer questions or discuss the many animals under their care. There are also conservation efforts being made here- most recently there have been 3 healthy baby Sichuan Takin (a vulnerable species) born. I visited a few days after one of the births and the Keepers seemed absolutely giddy. You can tell that the people working here truly care about animal welfare, which is such a refreshing sight after a few zoo visits in my youth left a bad taste in my mouth. There have been many updates to the zoo over the past few years, so if you haven't visited recently, I would highly recommend coming back and seeing the new exhibits.
Wow it's amazing. I love the new buildings they have added and the animals. It's worth the money. Great day out
I haven't been for a few years and was delighted to see all the new changes. It was a good hike around. Note, if you are pushing a wheelchair it is a little tough going up and down the hilly path.
Good experience! I saw red panda for the first time. Clean and organized. Friendly stuff.
The route is set up quite easy to follow throughout the different habitats. We had a great time and everyone was friendly and helpful.
I loved going there as a kid back in the 70's. Nota very big zoo, at least back then it was. Once when I was only 2 years old. My Mom and her side if the family went to the zoo for the day. Well me and my Mom, my auntie Maggie and I got locked inside the zoo. My uncle Gary and uncle Danny as well as my Grandparents. We're on the other side. Luckily my Mom and Maggie found a spot that they could climb over and out. So we set up the plan to get me out They readied me for my flight and launched me over the fence to the safety of my family members. One of the funnest times I can remember us all having there. As a Family. Together. Muss those days the zoonid great for families and kids. Highly recommended.
Need a new map to follow, Calgary zoo is way better but way more money, only $45 for a family of 7,I understand they are under construction but very unorganized.
I really enjoyed going there with my mom, but the only thing is that some people were not following the rules. They were bringing there whole family and jumping and climbing over things they were not supposed to be climbing on. But other than that we had a great time!
Neighborhood store. Great points system though the PC Financials credit card
Great experience. Not many animals to see at the moment. The whole trip usually takes about 2 hours max.
Love the Zoo but their Zooinescence event wasn't really well lit and there were a couple of pinch-points / missing signs to ensure Covid Distancing. Not a bad effort .... Something to improve on next year would be more animal sculptures from Canadian Tire.
Not a bad place to bring the kids....animals hide when it’s hot so keep that in mind. Lots of ice cream and snack shops with outside eating areas, this was my first trip...it took me an hour but would be longer with little ones. I would go again...
It's quite sparse right now due to covid. Many things are closed, Lucy the elephant is kept in a back lot, we weren't even able to see their red panda. I know they don't have much choice in the matter due to the pandemic but I would avoid the zoo until now things are reopened.
Nice place to spend half a day! Check their membership option if you plan to visit more than once a year
They keep poor Lucy the elephant in a concrete room 2/3 of her life that is painful and stressful, refuse to give her a coat residents made for her to keep warm and so much more. Don’t support this abusive environment, this poor elephant needs to retire for any small amount of quality if life.
Good area for animals and very nice to see for small children's as well as adults.
We have been coming to the Zoo for many years and have always enjoyed it. It has become dated in some areas but in the last couple of years with new funding it is now being updated. I do think that it would be so much nicer if there were a time when there is no zoos. I contemplate that if I was in a cage how would I feel. Not to nice I think. But in the meantime it is nice to see a better thinking of treating the animals better and providing more space and a more natural experience. I look forward to a time I believe there will be no zoos. The Valley Zoo will always have a soft spot in my mind and I feel there are good days ahead for it.
Went during winter on -30 windchill conditions so a large portion of the outdoor sections were closed. Even then its still worth checking out for the indoors/climatized areas and see some cool af bearded dragons and pythons. If you want to see the birds of prey, bring multiple layers. It will help tons
*sigh* it's not the magical Story Land Valley Zoo of my youth. It's improving. There were a lot of blocked off areas when we were there and the buildings are all terribly hot inside. Not too exciting for a two year old.
I must admit that I was a little bit disappointed with my experience at Edmonton Valley Zoo. Numerous animals were nowhere to be seen and I was especially missing the elephants when I visited. There are several ongoing renovations which is a terrible idea for the summer time as those renovations should take place in the spring or in the fall when less tourists visit. On the positive side, the location is well-maintained, staff is helpful and public transit to other places in town is acceptable.
Nice outing for family and friends need about two hours to see everything I recommend going in the morning or early afternoon so you can see most of the animals while they are awake as later in the day the animals tend to hide away.
Very clean Zoo. Animals looked really well cared for. I specifically went to see the Elephant, but she was resting in the back :) I get to see her anyways when I walked around the back. I saw a bird inside the Fox enclosure which I don't know was meant to be its food or the bird was just hanging out there. The tiger is very gorgeous! In terms of snacks, the Ice Cream portions were very generous for 1 1/2 scoop! Washrooms are very clean. Staff are very knowledgeable and nice about animals.
Better than I expected, we enjoyed it. Some of the exhibits need cleaning.
What to be expected during a pandemic. It wasn't a bad time at all we really enjoyed . Kind of hard to go to a place and not have kids touch.:) Some had mask some didn't so if your pro mask only I wouldn't suggest going.
This zoo is fun to go for the family
This is a bloody Circus, not even a Zoo! Just to make money from her misery! Sorry Edmonton residents, but if you don't get out and 'fight' for Lucy's freedom, then you are equally culpable for her distress.
Set up like a maze due to covid alot of walking in large circles alot of animals not out due to covid alot of bathrooms closed due to covid and only 1 open so every one had to use the same ones !! Great ice cream shop just past the reindeer exhibit i recommend the monster cone !! Great gift shop something for all !! Good time over all . the play places for small kids were taped off or posted not sanitized due to covid . but good time the day after my 3 year old said momma we go back to the animals again So great time had!!
It is a great place to spend weekend with family...... Not expensive and even vehicle is available for old people for $12. Place to relax and eating hub is there, ample of space for kids to play and have fun. Also have joy rides for kids. They have a section of petting animals, where kids can go inside and pet them. Many pre wedding shoots are also done there. In all good place to have fun.
Definitely a different vibe from the Calgary Zoo. The renos are pretty great, but I think there is room for improvement in the ungulate loop, like shade trees/structures along the walk ways. The glacier melt play area is amazing! Lots of free play for kids.
Nice day trip
Very safe place to take the family. We had a great time!
It is a really beautiful place! I always feel complexed when I think of zoos but it makes my heart happy to see these animals have nice safe homes. They definitely do a great job of not overcrowding the animals, very clean as well. It was fun to go! Got to see a lot of animals too!
First time visiting the zoo we didn't get to see as much as we'd like, due to Covid 19 most of the family stuff were closed and some animals were kept in. What we did enjoy was the experience and atmosphere, we will have to return when things are back to normal hopefully soon.
Wonderful little zoo. All the animals looked healthy and well fed and seemed to have good enclosures. Kudos to the staff and facility for keeping proper distancing measures and having hand sanitizer available all through the zoo. Staff were all friendly and polite with happy attitudes.
Always a great experience. The seasonal pass is worth it if you go a handful of times in a year. They have a good mix of indoor and outdoor exhibits. The cafe at the entrance has really good hand made potato chips. The staff are really kind. Some of the disabled door opener buttons do not work. It's been like this for a while. I struggle with my double stroller however there are usually really nice people around that can help keep the door open.
My son attended Story time at the zoo here! The camp was amazing! I love how many caregivers they had working with the children! Even though the air quality was poor, my son was able to experience the zoo, for 4 days! He learned so much!
Lots of fun. Well done by all the staff to maintain Covid safety for everyone. It was great :)
Its nice experience after covid 19 restrictions are over. Lucy , the elephant, is vary smart. Red panda is as usally sleepy and on the tree branch. Reptiles are good one. Over all good experience
It’s a pretty good zoo. The information staff and zoo keepers never seem to know where the elephant is. If the elephant is staying out of the public eye today, just tell us; don’t shrug and say maybe she’s walking around out back. Covered the whole zoo: no elephant today. ????♂️
It’s an okay zoo, not a lot of animals but hard to expect anything too different with our weather. Our daughter had a blast. They have been doing a lot of work to make the zoo more fun and exciting, and it’s working!
The Valley Zoo is such a magical place this time of year. The Zoominesence festival going on with the lights is amazing. It's a great place to go with the family and take in the sights. Take the kids, learn about the animals and get a little festive. Can't recommend this enough. As an added bonus, they have meeting rooms for smaller get together and parties!
Significant improvement over the last ten years.
I think the local Edmontonians are little biased when it comes to their reviews for this Zoo. Yes it is small. Yes they have been making improvements to it and I'm sure it's way better than it used to be. But many of the enclosures are small for the size/number of animal inside the cage. Now this is not the worst zoo I have seen by far but it is also not the nicest. However, the otters are quite enjoyable to watch.
Its a nice zoo. They are slowly modernizing it and the new exhibits are fantastic. It isn't big big and doesn't have a lot of exotic animals but is a decent size and great for smaller kids. Plus probably one of the only places you will get to see an elephant out for a walk (sad story in a way).
It was a pleasure to visit this zoo. Although this zoo does not have a lot animals, but still it is a decent sized with common animals. I liked the white wolves, and I captured some auspicious moments. This zoo has only one elephant, her name is Lucy. She is very adorable and also at the center of main attention. She is 45 years old and loves to eat popcorns. I would definitely recommend this place.
Awesome experience. Many animals, a good place to visit and bring kids
What a complete joke. Worst zoo ever! Half of the zoo was closed and the other half had no animals to be seen. We will never be coming back! Actually that's a lie we saw a zebra a bird and an umu! If I could give it less than 1 star I would!
Went for the ZooBrew event on a Friday and it was a great time. The animals were a lot more active after it started getting dark. Lots of Indy beer vendors and well laid out.
Was a bit chilly this time of year, but the light displays were definitely worth it!
I really enjoyed the different views just around the zoo being in the valley, but I think the zoo needs alot of work to really fill it in. There was alot of spots under construction, empty spots all over with no animals, you have to really walk around to find an animal. I do think Lucy the elephant was amazing to see, once the red panda exhibit is done it should be nice, the carousel ride was really great for small kids, kangaroos were neat. But still found it overall expensive for what you see or lack there of.
Very cute zoo, and affordable even for our big family. There is a large variety of animals and lots to see
Good experience on our last visit, very clean and well kept for the most part.
I’ve been going to this zoo since I was a kid, and have always enjoyed it for what it is. It’s not a huge one with tons of animals, but a smaller one with a good feeling. I can tell that the keepers really care about the animals. They are undergoing some very needed renovations, and I’m looking forward to what it will be when complete.
Always wonderful to come here . Vast area, animals a taken care of. Multipke sitting areas. Couple of places to purchase food or snacks
Born and raised in Edmonton the Edmonton Valley Zoo has always been one of our favourite places to visit! Especially in the winter time when all the lights are set up! My photos definitely can’t do them justice and I would 100% recommend coming to check them out if you haven’t experienced them for yourself yet! ☺️????

I don't like that they handpicked the 1 out of 11 experts that said Maggie the Elephant from the Alaskan zoo, couldn't be moved. She was eventually moved and has really recovered in a sanctuary. Still, EVZ insists on using Dr. Oosterhuis, even after he approved of elephants being beaten over the head in California, and commended the treatment of animals somewhere that was shut down days later due to their inhumane treatment. He hasn't diagnosed a problem with Lucy's trunk either. Elephants are intelligent social animals. There are regulations that say Elephants must be kept with at least two other Elephants, among other things that this Zoo doesn't do. All the animals are kept in really small areas, but I think Lucy is the worst example.
Covid puts a damper on visits to the zoo: many exhibits are closed and the times to see the elephants (for example) are severely limited. $75 for us to take our elephant crazed daughter (and other kids) only to literally see the tail end of one twice. Luck of the draw I guess! Otherwise, this zoo is beautiful and fun to take our kids too! We enjoy the many areas to sit and enjoy the views! Our kids especially enjoy the little stream with the rocks for hopping across.
Staff was knowledgeable and very helpful. Seeing Lucy on her walks Definitely made the kids day
Wonderful place to visit with your family for some socially distanced fun. While some exhibits remain closed, Edmonton Valley Zoo has an assortment of well maintained picnic areas, food stalls and timed entry so you never feel crowded on your visit.
Fantastic zoo! Great staff and awesome picnic spots! A great way to spend a day with the kids or by yourself. There is some construction as they are upgrading the zoo so not all of the exhibits are open. Bring big spray and sunscreen!
This was a magical day for the kiddos! It's been a long while since I've been to the zoo. Protocols for masks were in place and explained quite well with staff at every building entrance with extra masks. Very clear path layed out to follow (one way). Lots of animals to explore and some wicked structures and play on sculptures for the kiddos. Will definitely make this a yearly trip ????
Great experience! Enjoyed my visit. Their work went into the covid prevention is outstanding! And deserve a praise! Remember to order your tickets online, and enjoy the zoo without crowds! Nice to actually see the animals than people!
Thank you for keep the place safe and take care of the animals so thoughtfully. So we can go back to enjoy the wonders of nature
Great first zoo experience for my daughter. Well set up to deal with covid protocols and well designed to see all the animals in a safe manner. My daughter loved it.
Took the family to the zoo. The staff were very informative and they took all the safety precautions needed. My family enjoyed it, everyone wore there masks when needed, there were plenty of places to sanitize your hands as well. You also have to book online and pay online before you go, they will ask you for your info when you do go through the gates.
Lots closed but they are doing renovations so not much they can do. Cool stuff still though.
My family enjoyed our trip to the Edmonton Zoo. We were a bit surprised of the size as we had prepared for walking around for a couple of hours like the Vancouver Zoo and spend majority of our day there. Instead we were able to enjoy our time within less than two hours. Overall it was beautiful and visiting the animals was an awesome experience. I would definetly visit again. Learning about different animals and being able to see them in reality versus looking up pictures online is a different but good experience. ????
Very unimpressed. Half the zoo is closed, very limited animals. All indoor facilities are closed but required to wear a mask out doors makes no sense to me. Security asked us to put our mask on and briefly after telling him the rules are manipulated at your facility, he agreed they were ridiculous as well and let us on our way. Good way to waste some time but should be free if you guys close 60% of the place
Wow! I didn't know that the entire facility was renovated. The food and amenities are quite impressive. A few minutes after we arrived I completely forgot we were still in Edmonton. If you haven't been to the zoo in a while, definetley recommend a visit.
Beautiful zoo. Has a red bear, seals performing, tiger and an elephant they are carefully monitoring due to health issues.
I loved this! We've come at the time of covid, so some features are closed or limited. We walked through and saw all the animals. We went through at 11, and a lot of the carnivores were awake and active.
The Valley Zoo has done a great job during Covid. I highly recommend visiting while the Christmas lights are up (if you can get tickets).
Lots of fun for the whole family. Some enclosures are still small and not up to the new "standards" we expect in 2021. Overall very fun and definitely recommend.
The upgrades and renovations are looking great. Enclosures are well landscaped looking lush and full.
The zoo is the perfect size for an outing with little ones. There's lots to see and do without being overwhelming. My kids love the train and petting zoo. The new additions and feature areas look great and I can't wait to see the new changes as the zoo continues to upgrade and improve.
Excellent place for kids in Edmonton... everyone should visit not only for elephant lucy, there are still more amazing animals...
I want to commend the zoo on the great job managing traffic flow and supporting social distancing and hygiene during this second phase of covid relaunch. This was my first time attending the zoo, and I knew it was a smaller one, and it exceeded my expectations. It was a lovely walk (less than 2 hours with a stroller). Great for little kids. There is a revitalization going on and you can see a lot of care being put into the changes. Of course if you're comparing it to the Toronto or Calgary zoo you might be a bit disappointed... this isn't a large zoo like those that draw in huge crowds and funding. But if you manage that expectation, abd appreciate the zoo for what it is, it is a pleasant way to spend an afternoon with the family.
Too early in the year to see any significant animal life, most enclosures had either sleeping or hiding animals. Inside buildings still had heat on when mean temp outside was 28, was cooler outside. My grandson had fun running around still. Park was relatively clean.
Lovely place for the kids. Would be nice if more exhibits were open. Gift shop had lots of stuff and the restaurant served good lunch food.
So much fun for kids. Even though we kept missing Lucy the elephant, we had a fun time on our class field trip!
What a great little zoo! We all had such a blast
My son enjoys going to the zoo. We always have fun. They have done lots of upgrades and it looks so nice they have a really nice petting zoo area we even saw goats eating grass on the roofs.
I visited the zoo on April 7th, it was so fun, felt safe, they were following the covid guidelines greatly. They also brought some animals outside, that I think they usually only have inside. Hope I can visit again ????
There have been a lot of upgrades from when I remember coming as a kid. Great place for kids. It's not a huge zoo but still lots to see. My son and I took part in one of the zoo school for preschool programs and I was really impressed. They incorporated a lot of hands on learning which was really fun and the instructor was able to keep control of a room full of 3 year olds. A perk of taking the program is you could go into the zoo after class and explore on your own.
Lovely seeing all the animals. Renovations looking great.
with the new additions and changes our zoo is getting better and better, if I had won the lotto I would have donated to get more of the referb done quicker. Great place to spend part of your day then hang out by the river.
A lot nicer than I remembered it being (I haven't been in a few years). The new entrance is great, and it's nice seeing the raptors have been moved into larger spaces. I also think moving towards mostly northern species is a great idea conservation-wise! Seems like they're continuing to upgrade exhibits as well, so that's great! Go Edmonton Valley Zoo!!!
This small to medium-sized zoo is great for families with little children. Unlike a big zoo where you need to walk around the whole zoo to get your money's worth, this place is more like a sit-down place where you can just relax while watching the animals. The zoo has plenty of trees that provide shades during hot summer season and you can watch elephants walk around the zoo occasionally.
We loved it. We took our 20 month old daughter and she has never been to a zoo before. She loved seeing all the animals she sees in cartoon alive. She still talks about them all the time
Zoominescence at the Edmonton Valley Zoo. Must book your entry time online ahead. Bring a pair of ice cleats snow grips.
It is a great place.for the kids, small, fun reminds me of my childhood at storyland Valley zoo
I visited the zoo on April 7th, it was so fun, felt safe, they were following the covid guidelines greatly. They also brought some animals outside, that I think they usually only have inside. Hope I can visit again ????
Awesome Instructors and so many choices for My biggest explorers. We would like to return here again and again.
Awesome outing and the snow never bothered us anyways ????..
The gift shop featured a lot of interesting items, and the restaurant served tasty meals.
Friendly staff and a great place to visit. Lots of room for those concerned with social distancing.
Not that bad I guess, especially we saw the red panda, a good climber indeed.
Nice day trip
Nothing to spectacular. Makes for a decent few hours and the kids enjoy seeing the animals (when they're out).
Today was the first time I had been at the zoo in many years. It was also the first time I have ever brought a child. First impression is that quite a few animals seem to be hiding or not visible, more or less because there are extra barriers in the way to prevent patrons from touching the glass or being to close as per covid 19 health guidelines. Second impression is that there was not enough hand sanitizer available at entry ways, exits and if there was hand sanitizer, it would only give you a small amount, not nearly enough to completely sanitize the hands. Also, the gift shop is extremely over priced. 20 dollars for a 4 inch by 6 inch stuffed animal is excessive. Did I have fun? Sure, as long as my son is happy. Would I return? No. Would I recommend, yes! Do I think the admission price for 2 adults should equal 40 dollars, for what is available at the zoo at this moment in time, no! The zoo is over priced, the food is over priced, the gift shop is over priced. At the very least, increase what types of attractions are available if you're cost is this high.
Great experience. Not many animals to see at the moment. The whole trip usually takes about 2 hours max.
You remember when they closed the giant door on our elephants nose and cut off last two feet of her trunk?
Was a little disappointed in the zoo. Did not have as many exhibits as a thought they would have. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. But as far as going to a zoo I guess maybe I expected too much. But there was not an abundance of animals too see.
The zoo is a joke. The animals’ enclosures (especially the big cats’) are beyond deplorable. Lots of wasted space and lots of empty enclosures. Kids enjoy the rather simple things ( sheep, goats, chickens, toy train and water feature outside). Very disappointed with this zoo. If possible drive and hour and go to the discovery park which is family owned and more enjoyable.
Love this place. Can see the animals up close. Just awesome
This was the first time I took my son (almost a year old) to the zoo, and we had a lot of fun walking through and seeing all the animals. We went with some friends, and it was a lovely activity for the morning.
This is a small zoo with lots of features. For the price, it's worth getting an annual pass just to go for a nice walk and play on their awesome climbing structures. I think we enjoy the grounds more than the actual animals, but I never give up a chance to see the seals and sea lions (and a hidden gem climbing area in that spot). The cafe is nice and I love the outdoor seating by the fountain. It is very wheelchair friendly and has accessible bathrooms, though their change tables do not accommodate anyone larger than a toddler. I would love to see an adult change table near the cafe. That would put it over the top for me!
Very Nicky laid out zoo, friendly staff! My boys love the monkeys!!
My daughter and I had a great time. It was not so big that I felt overwhelmed, and there was a good variety of animals to see. If you're very well traveled and have seen a lot of exotic animals before, well, this isn't going to impress you much. But for children and families who just want a fun day, this is perfect. One of the best features was the petting zoo for kids. Even my timid girl had fun actually touching the animals. Another thing I noticed is that the exhibits are clearly made to show the animals and NOT to sell you merchandise. At a lot of other zoos, including Calgary, San Diego and Shanghai, it almost feels like the exhibits are merely there to get you excited about the gift shop, which is the only Exit. It's almost comical how obvious their strategy is. Some advice: Bring lots of water, Bring lots of hand sanitizer or wipes, Bring snacks and bring a stroller. There is still a lot of walking from one exhibit to the next.
Loved it. Compared to calgary zoo it was small. However, the variety of animals was great. The elephant, lynx, and servile cat were my favourite animals to see. I also loved playing with my son in the little glacier. Price was reasonable as well.
Great quick fun times out with the family!
Lots of fun for the kids, not too much walking. The Tigers get real excited if you're dressed as the Marshmallow Man from Ghostbusters.
Good place to send some quality time with nature.
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is definitely a good place to spend the day with friends or family. The animals were great and the enclosures were nicely maintained and clean. Moreover, I love how cheap the admission fees were, especially the annual pass! There were a couple of vendors who sold ice-cream, drinks, etc.. which was nice also. It also takes awhile to adventure around the zoo itself, and it was nice to see the animals out and about. It was also delightful to read the little informational cards which came with each exhibit. Overall, I would highly recommend going here especially when you have not already! They also do certain themed events around the year. You can find out more on their website.
Stop exporting depressing videos of the horrible state of your elephants.
Great place to spend a couple of hours wandering and seeing the animals
Nice place to visit during summer season...kids are welcomed Ticket prices are: 1. Adult: 11.75 2. Family: 37 $ (7 members)
Horrible waste of money I will not return back sadly. I will be driving to Calgary next time I want to take my family to the zoo. 45$ later and we saw otters, seals, one elephant, some birds,a fox,two tigers, two wolves, wild life that I can see on the side of the highway.and some other animals. Half the stuff was under construction or closed. If they are building a better zoo why do we still have to pay so much?
It's very disappointing experienced for us today. (September 23, 2019 13:40) not much animals you can see as advertised. We only see Elephant, Chicken, goats, Linx and Zebra before we go home and left the zoo. Not much to see here. I can not say, I wasted money but time we spent here. It's ashame when you know that Edmonton is the Alberta's Capital but compared to Calgary Zoo this is nothing. It's better to drive in Calgary.
Great staff. Lots of updates. This is NOT the 'storyland valley zoo' of old. Much needed upgrades and updates make it a great day with the family. Cost for 4 adults and a tot plus food was 70 bucks!!! Wicked price!
I love the new upgrades! There is so much room for little ones to run around and a lot of the exhibits are more interactive. There's multiple structures for the kids to climb on, a little splash park at the entrance, and paddle boats. Although part of me still misses the storyland zoo.
Spend at least 2 hours. Not too many animals too see. Prefer to go 2 hs before they close as not to many people. Went there in the summer and fall this year... Fall colors are just so beautiful there.
Edmonton Valley Zoo seemed alive even in May. I just gave it a try thinking it would be less busy as summer was yet to come. Well, the place was full with different kids and student group and there were several talks scheduled at different times. We didn't get to see Lucy the elephant and forgot to ask the zoo staff before leaving, I suspect she is sick. All other animals were present
Good fun for the family. Some of the exhibits were closed due to covid but was still fun, none the less
Our family rented the Otter Room for a Christmas party and thoroughly enjoyed our time. The kids (and adults) loved watching the otters play from a large window right in the room. We also had a zoo attendant do animal presentations, she provided interesting facts and then brought small animals around the room to be looked at closely and even pet, if you were brave enough (one animal was a snake). We had an opportunity to walk around the zoo as well. It was a very memorable experience.
The elephant, Lucy, is so incredibly cramped in a literal jail concrete cell(which is bad for her feet), with only painted trees, and without other elephants to keep her company. She is also forced to endure cold temperatures (despite her being an elephant which come from warmer clinates). She's overweight, most likely suffering from depression and suffering without the love from her fellow animal species. Elephants are social creatures and she needs that. Please send Lucy to a retirement sanctuary with other elephants. It's where she belongs.
Great place for kids to run around and explore! Saw Lucy the elephants show and it was awesome. My son loved watching her kick the soccer ball, very informative as well. Also reasonably priced, especially if you have an AMA membership.
I've been visiting the valley soo for a little over 50 years and have some of my fondest memories visiting there growing up as a kid. The storyline characters were always fun and entertaining. But of course the highlight for any Young fella would be the train the tour through the little people village of the zoo Unfortunately with all that gone it's nothing more than a big persons petting zoo, but you can't pet the animals We took our granddaughter there and the only thing that interests her and the rest of the kids were the kids themselves there's really nothing there for little kids It's a beautiful park but friendly people working there I think it has a lot of potential but nothing special right now
Animals and Christmas lights. So much fun! The zoo has come a long way in the past few years. Now featuring the red pandas and the new urban farm.
Went here for mothers day 2018. If it wasn't for friends and family, this place would have been a total bore. Only few animals were out, which seems to be the norm for this zoo. I can pay same price in Calgary and have tons more fun. Either this zoo needs more grants or they need to be audited to find out where the money is going cause it doesn't appear to go to preserving more wildlife
Not as big as Calgary but still a good size to send a good few hours with kids
If this zoo cares so much for its animals then Lucy, their single lonely Asian elephant would NOT still be there! Elephants are NOT solitary animals. She should never have been housed alone all these years. Let her retire to one of the sanctuaries that have offered her a place. People have failed Lucy :(. Shame on this zoo!!
They've really stepped up their game over the last couple of years to make the habitats more enjoyable for the animals. A really pleasant surprise if you haven't been here for a few years.
Last visited the zoo over 10 years ago and it has vastly improved since then. One of Edmontons hidden gems. Go visit I think you will be pleasantly surprised.
I haven't been to the zoo in 15-20 years, however, with the pandemic still going on and the fact I have a 22 month old now, I was looking for something to do, we ventured out. First off, the COVID measures that are in place are great. Lots of helpful staff, social distance signs, and hand sanitization stations. Masks are not required outdoors but required in the indoor facilities, so definitely pack some for the family. Second, my wife and I had lower expectations for the visit, but we're pleasantly surprised on the quality of the facilities and the variety of animals. Our daughter loved it and the army of other families there all seemed to be enjoying themselves. A pre-booked timeslot is required. Registering and reserving was easy, and once we arrived, they had a full list of everyone for the day so we just provided our be last name and were ushered in. Would definitely recommend.
Good value. Great experience
This zoo is great however when we were there this summer they were doing some renovations and half of the zoo was closed off... Lucy was incredible they took her for her afternoon walk while we were there and it was amazing to be so close to such a huge majestic animal!!!
At the Edmonton Zoo, my family and I had a fantastic time. For the family, the price was quite fair.
Best part of my experience at the zoo was the ice cream. The parking lot is overgrown and dusty, the animals enclosures are WAY TOO small and NOT NATURAL IN ANYWAY. I seen one or two enclosures with actual trees in them, the rest of the enclosures had branches tied together and twisted together and set up to kind of be like a tree. The kookaburras had one natural tree, and their enclosure was maybe 10 feet tall and no wider then 6 feet. One of the pelicans had a weird growth on the top of their beak and was just swimming around in circles around the pond. The bald eagle had one wing…her sign actually asked to watch if she falls over and to see if she gets back up, if she doesn’t then to get a worker. One of the monkeys had epilepsy, so he was segregated by himself away from his regular enclosure. One of the goats was breathing heavy and clearly in respiratory distress. The branches in the enclosures had dead leaves on them, clearly from being cut but it just made the whole situation really sad for these animals. Paint is peeling from the outside of the enclosures. Lucy, the elephant was out walking and on top of a hill eating her grass but her enclosure was very sad. Edmonton Valley Zoo needs a hardcore renovation and their animal enclosures need to be redone. The injured and sick animals (eagle, monkey and the pelican) need to be moved to a rescue and rehabilitation centre to live comfortably and not stuck in a cage.
We had a small group with us and we enjoyed it. The urban farm petting area was good for the kids and the worker made sure to put the animals first so when they got overwhelmed the worker pulled everyone out to let the animals calm down. We got some ice cream near there as well and it was a nice walk around with that. One thing I would suggest is possibly a warning system when the zoo is closing? We ended up getting out quite late 5:10 because we didn't realize the time. On the one hand I'm grateful we weren't rushed out and could get out at a leisurely pace but on the other I had a dinner at 5 that I was very late for due to losing track of time (my own fault) but overall everything was wonderful and we all enjoyed it
I was there with my girlfriend today, kind of sucks having to follow arrows. Too hot for animals to be active on a hot day like today. Had a nice walk through there though.
The animals were not all out there so even the birds were sleepy but kids like the rides.
The zoo's refusal to free Lucy the elephant shows how little compassion and care they have for their animals.. it's all about profits after all. Lucy has multiple health issues including depression (due to inadequate environment and conditions in which she is kept) yet, the zoo and the local authorities refuse to allow Lucy to retire to a sanctuary so she can enjoy the little life she has left after 43 years of service this cruel organization. Shame on you
Wonderful staff, great renovated areas since I was there last. I would have liked to know that the Red Panda house wasn't open but other than that it was a great experience and my daughter was thrilled to get waved at by dear Lucy. Can't wait to go back
A lot was under construction but how often do you see an elephant having an afternoon stroll with you ❤️❤️. It was great
Haven't been in years and it's way better than I remember it. A few animals were not available to see, but for the most part they were visible and active. Kids loved it. I will say it seemed like all the animals that were hiding were at the start of our day so when the elephant wasn't there the kids almost lost it. But everything after that made them happy little future zoologists.
This zoo is a great place for everyone to go too. Their facilities are definitely up to par. There is a ton to see. Everything from the petting zoo, to the reptiles. This zoo has everything to offer.
Many spots were closed because of COVID. Many animals were sleeping inside because of the heat. Nice place for a walk, but very few animals to see in summer time.
Kids had so much fun staff was super helpful,
Had a wonderful day with the family. Reasonable prices so much fun love family time can't wait to visit again soon
Their maps that they hand out should have better photo quality . They're hard to read because they're very blurry. The photo is enlarged, so on a computer it probably looks fine but the hand outs are no good. The zoo is well kept and clean. Went there for mother's day and there were lots of activities for kids, plus live music playing in several areas. Fun day!
Love the light displays! Dress warm! Wear solid footwear as the paths can be slippery.
good time for the kids, can`t wait for it to be back to normal.
This place is a an animal's prison. Definitely not a fun place when you see all these poor creatures locked up and forced to live in such a sad environment. Avoid this place if you're expecting a fun time. One star is one too many. Only a heartless person would enjoy this depressing place.
Great place, great learning. Good exposure for both young and old. The zoo is well maintained and well laid out. I seen the addition of the urban farm animals which was very pleasing. Loved every bit. However, there's need and room for more species.
Decent Zoo, love the animals here though.
We had a season pass this year starting after the reopening (closure due to covid -19). It is a great place to spend some time. My 2 year old son loves it! We only spend a short amount of time at the zoo because of nap time, but we are able to see and do a lot of things. The zoo is part of the vaccine exemption program, so you must show ID and proof of vaccine to enter ( for those old enough to be vaccinated). Masks are currently required only in the buildings, but when you are outside you can be mask free. Canteens and bathrooms are open. Lots of animals to see during Zoominescence this year! Beautiful light displays.
Love this Zoo! The management and the staff make the best out of their limited budget. Our family really enjoy going there!
Zoos may be the thing of the past..it is hard to compete with the internet for viewing animals in action and their natural habitats. Sadly zoo animals are usually sleeping or lazy in midday .
A lot of animals were in their enclosure so we were not able to see most. My niece was extremely disappointed that Lucy the Elephant wasn't around either. They blocked off some houses like the lemurs so you can't even see them unless you zoom on your camera. I understand that they have to keep the animals safe as well as practice distancing, however, they could still limit the amount of people allowed into some of the enclosures. It was a disappointment to see so few animals.
Always best experience. We were able to see all animals. Loved our visit.
It's always a good experience, a little hot today so alot of animals trying to stay cool
There is an Asian Elephant pictured on a Care2 petition, standing in the snow and the Zoo authorities have refused an independent assessment of the Elephant's state of health - why? Asian Elephants originate from a warmer climate compared to the Canadian winter climate and don't waste my time telling me that the Elephant will adjust to the climate because this is just not true.
Great flow to the crowd. Not too busy on indoor displays
My family and I had an amazing time at the Edmonton Zoo. Price was very reasonable for the family. They had a one way direction for viewing making it easy to keep groups separate as well. We did two loops that day and had a whole different experience on the second one because different animals were more active. So neat! Plenty of places along the loop to rest and get refreshments as well. All and all a great family experience.
The EVZ has physically come a long way in the last decade. It provides a better quality of life for the animals then in the past. Its a fun, engaging and informational experience in a very pretty setting. The staff are very nice and care a great deal about the animals.
It was ok but not a place to spend alot of time, it was over in a hour
We did Zoo lights. The kids loved it despite the cold (which is beyond their control). Their set up was beautiful. And the fire place was a nice touch
Loved it! First time ever.
The zoo is great, this review is about the new restaurant at the urban farm portion of the zoo. It was terrible. It is crazy expensive for what amounted to food a 12 year old could prepare. It was disorganized and slow, and the quality of both the ingredients and the preparation was barely competent. After a long wait we got supermarket smokies on plain white buns and chips that were not crispy. They got crispier when left in the sun for a few minutes. We also got pierogies and sausage, which were barely warm, even after the long wait for them. For the price, I would have expected something unique or particularly well done. However, even if the quality had been significantly better, the portions did not justify the prices. It is brand new and only offering a preview menu right now, but given that they struggled to produce very basic items in an edible manner, I would not recommend trying anything once they are faced with juggling the full menu.
Still not in full swing due to covid but quite enjoyable. Great place to bring kids.
The value zoo is a staple of edmonton. Bring good walking shoes as you will put a few miles on. Be patient and watch the habitat's as often the creatures are just hiding out and take some time to see. Being able to catch the elephant Lucy on a walkabout is pretty special as well. Lots of shows and new centers built. Worth checking out again if you haven't seen it lately
Such a fun time.
Nice little zoo. Main attraction is Lucy the elephant. She even paints pictures for sale.
I love the zoo! The reptiles were great!
The zoo is kinda of depressing great for the little ones but as an adult you can really see what's going on. Especially if you just look at the way they treat Lucy the elephant. They clearly care more about money then animals and it sickens ones heart to see something like that. Aren't we as canadians always trying to show the world that something can be done better.
Although better than the last time I was here a few years ago with some updated buildings, today's experience was pretty poor due to the lake of animals available to see in their habitats enhanced by security doubling as the mask police that followed us around ragging on us to put our masks up whenever we had them down to drink water as it was about 25 degrees today or down when no one else was around us. I have no issue wearing a mask mind you, but it's pretty silly in mind how even when we were 25+ feet away from the next group and we took a breather we were still being rudely hounded.
Shame on those who support this place! Maybe in your next life you'll be locked and starved in a cage for display. Karma is real
Went to Zoominescence with the grandkids. Was pretty cold at -18 Celsius but still doable for all ages including little one in a stroller. Very pretty light displays, everyone loved the animals both inside and outside, lots to see for the kids, even saw reindeer! Bonus!
For the most part the zoo was great. Unfortunately tried ordering the family lunch at the lunch bar by the farm exhibit. The sign said 15 minute wait. The cashier said 20 minute wait. After a wait of 35 minutes I decided to cancel my order. I was told mine was next up. In the next 15 minutes I saw 2 other people get their orders. Then mine was finally ready. Horrible wait and lied to. I would rate that a -2.
Beautiful zoo! The animals all looked very happy, energetic, and well cared for. We were able to get close to Steve & Beau the otters while keepers did an up-close-and-personal demonstration and we were able to see Lucy the elephant who regularly gets to go on walks all around the zoo. They obviously really care about their zoo and we were able to explore the West Edmonton mall and the zoo all in one day because they're wonderfully close together. Highly recommend!
Very bad experience. Food restaurant closed at 2 45pm. Elephant exhibit closed. Sea lion closed. To see the tiger it's impossible , he located up hill ... Toy store over priced! 1 small toy inside metal box 75$!!!?? Everything under construction and the cashier didn't mentioned any of this. Bad experience.
Barely saw any animals. Definitely not worth going here again.
Lots of neat exhibits and a solid collection of animals that seem well cared for.
Absolutely heartbroken about Lucy the resident elephant here. She had to endure bitterly cold winters, and is completely alone which is not natural for an elephant. There is an option to let her go to a sanctuary, please, use your voice to implore these people to let this animal be happy
A small zoo but fun to walk around. Has a great petting zoo for the kids. Toy train ride a few food concessions, along with the animal displays. Relatively inexpensive admittance, $11 for adults and you get 10% of with CAA and they offer 2 for 1 specials,m family for $45 etc and best of all free parking. Located in the River valley right beside lots of bike and walking trails. A real nice way to spend a sunny afternoon.
Zoominescence....a lovely evening for a walk. Friendly staff and very helpful. Great way to start the Christmas season!
Visited before the season officially started so I'm assuming it would have been a better adventure had all the attractions been opened. The price seemed steep considering only half the exhibits were open. The zoo was reminiscent of a large petting zoo ... Although there were wolfs roaming around and tigers the enclosures seemed very small and not suited for these magnificent creatures. Do yourself a favour and pack a lunch. The food stand was disgusting and unorganized and very expensive definitely gauging.
I live in the area and have visited this zoo most of my life. I was shocked to see the new renovations. Well done! You are on your way to being a more world class zoo. We were fortunate to see Lucy on her walk. I especially liked the seal enclosure although I did not see any of the sea lions that you used to have. You are definitely on the right track. One suggestion that I would like to see is more information on the individual animals. Do they have names, histories? Also is the zoo involved with captive breeding programs? You do have some animals that I had not seen before, are they endangered?
Not the best zoo but it’s great for kids. We got the year pass, which is very reasonably priced, and found that coming here was our go to activity last Summer. Will be buying another pass this year. It doesn’t take too long to walk around the zoo so kids don’t get too tired. They’re also updating the petting farm, can’t wait to see it when it’s finished.
They really need a better map and signs to get around! Very old buildings and enclosures, poor animals seem bored out of their minds. Need to do better taking care of these animals, I understand that this place is small and old a has no money. Should have been shut down instead of renovated, just my opinion.
Zoo seems to be the best/look the best it has in the past few years. Very clean and reasonable prices
A very reasonably priced zoo. If you haven't been in a few years you should really check it out, enclosures have been improved. There is a distinct lack of food services, so pack a lunch. The merry-go-round and train are fun for little kids and are included with your admission.
Small but enjoyable zoo. Well maintained and animals seem to be all in a good spot. Was able to see Zoominescence: A Festival of Light, nice light displays throughout the zoo
I feel so sad when I think about Edmonton Valley Zoo and poor Lucy locked up, alone and cold. She has been given TWO chances for freedom in a warm sanctuary but the zoo refuses to let her go. Please EVZ do the right thing! The world is watching and we wont give up. Send Lucy to sanctuary so people can believe you actually care about the animals in your care. #FreeLucy
Day well spent here with kids.. It's totally worth the money. My kids enjoyed a lot..
We enjoyed seeing Lucy the elephant up nice and close on the elephant walk. The kids enjoyed the petting zoo. There is a decent amount of animals to see. Some favorites are the Tiger, snow leopard, red pandas and Lucy the elephant.
Fun place, some construction but all kinds of cool animals
It was okay. They should have a mist spray as it is hot towards the end of the walk wich is very hot. No shade at all. No bathrooms , only at the entrance
The Zoo was great for everything we saw, we went in the winter so some animals were inactive and some seemed to be hiding. Lucy, the lovely Elephant, was napping so we didn't get to see her. Overall it was a good experience, just a bit disappointing because of the time of year we chose to go. In the summer it would be wonderful.
It was very hot when I went so most of the animals were hiding. Didn't get to see Lucy the elephant either. The zoo has undergone many upgrades and it looks nice.
Honestly theres not many animals to view, it was good to get out for a few hours and walk around. The sprinklers was my best highlight of the day????.
Do yourself a favor and hit the Edmonton Zoo... It is fantastic!! They have added so many exotic animals and the zoo keepers are so knowledgeable and clearly have a passion for those career and show so much love to the animals. Can't wait to go back.
It is the best place for kids to see animals that they have not seen before
The zoo was nice and clean, unfortunate that some of the animals (nocturnal and reptiles) can't be seen due to covid, even Lucy the elephant was inside her building.
We went in the afternoon and alot of the animals were napping, Lucy the elephant wasn't in her own and nowhere to be seen. The new buildings were very nice and there is alot of places to sit. I found the map was abit confusing to get around not to miss anything. If they painted the path it would be easier.
Love the zoo, favourites are Lucy and the Meerkats. Peaceful walking through the grounds.
Good time under construction but still pretty good for the kids
Great place to go with family! Definitely recommend going to see the lights show
Very nice service during Covid 19. There are marks on the ground so it minimize the risk.
Went for light special yesterday. Not much lighted places as expected but my kid enjoyed the animals. Good for young kids.
That zoo is absolutely nothing special it was our first time and the last one
Underwhelming. While the zoo hosts a beautiful space, the grounds are unkept and the enclosures are to small for the animals.
First time there since covid started. Everything is sort of blocked off so you need to follow a set path through the zoo. It kind of takes away from the fun a bit but a safety measure I'm sure due to covid. Would still visit again and looking forward to future expansions at the zoo. Definitely needs more exhibits and animals.
Had such a blast. Thought there was more animals than that. It was sad not seeing Lucy. But we had a great time!
If you don't know too much about elephants, please take the time to learn. Elephants need warmth and an area to graze. Elephants are not meant to be alone. They are herd animals and need others of their own kind. The winters are very unkind to elephants. The elephant at this zoo should be move to a sanctuary in a warmer climate where it can interact with other elephants and live a life where it's not on display for monetary gain.
Great displays, colourful. Only one observation in that there could've been more low level lighting along some trails, like garden lights at ground level. Very dark on some trails with icy patches difficult to see.
Easy to social distance. Limited animals in outside enclosures due to weather and no access to indoor exhibits.
The Edmonton Valley Zoo is a small facility but is a great zoo for its size. The small size makes it feel more personal than some of the large zoos where you feel like you are just shuffled through.
I love the animals here. And although I always end up coming in the winter time there is always a decent selection. I find they are concentrating more on the "merchandise" and "retail" stuff than working on the exhibits and animals. I see some areas of the park getting attention while others are bland. I will still continue to visit the zoo but would like to see greater things and excitement around the exhibits.
Although many attractions were closed the staff exceeded expectations with their knowledge and courtesy......the Tigers were always the main showcase and did not disappoint
It is a great Zoo to visit! I got lots of great pictures of the various animals!
always a fun place to take the kids, just went for boo in the zoo
Had a great time, layout is good. Unfortunately we didn't get to see Lucy but overall had a good experience.
Lots of things weren't available thanks to COVID but the Zoo did a great job of making sure there was plenty of space to distance from other groups. We got to see the new lynx cub and the tigers!
Small but special. Always enjoy a stroll around this zoo. Hoping to catch sight of Lucy on her walks and the birds of prey.
Several exhibits were shut down, yet they charged full price... honestly overall it was OK. One of those you could take it.or.leave it kind of experiences.
this zoo needs to be shut down. way to small of cages these poor animals are in.
My heart breaks for Lucy. Elephants are family animals and shouldn't be kept in isolation. While their hides look very tough, they are in face very sensitive and bull hooks cause much pain. Please release her to a sanctuary where she can be with other elephants to live out her life.
The natural park sold us on coming back. Layout was great and animals looked well cared for. Friendly staff, too.
Awesome lots of animals and a great way to spend a day
Great zoo. Easy to get around. Family really enjoyed the 2 hours we were there
Clean, well organized, easy walk. It seemed that a variety of animals were sick.
They have banned toddlers, special needs children and the disabled - anyone who can't wear a mask - from entry. This is discrimination and against human rights. They could accommodate, but choose not to. Shame on them and shame on the staff who sit by and don't stand up against this discrimination.
We visited the zoo on August 13th, 2021 and we spoke with a very nice young lady working there by the name of Dallas. She was very good at interacting with my son who is almost 5 years old. The animals were really cool to see but I felt bad for the larger animals. They looked bored. The lemurs, meerkats are the red panda were our favorites.
Good zoo. It's quite small so not a full day out.
Hadn't been here in 25 years, went back recently and wasn't overly impressed. lots of exhibits closed. 25 yrs ago there was camel rides, pony rides, a train tour, a petting zoo....its pretty lame now.
It was good to bad cause of covid we couldn't get into some of the exhibits.
It was a great day!! Clean, well organized. Staff were polite and informative. Not a fan of having to wear a mask outside but with the crowds it's understandable! Seen quite a few animals in their outdoor exhibits.
A very good Zoo that is maintained with animals even from tropical places. Has well maintained zoo with facilities like ticketing centre, restaurant, toy train, wild animals like Tiger, elephant, chickens, cows, pigs, birds of various species, reptiles, zebra, etc. Has wheelchair accessible parking and entrance too. Edmonton city to be congratulated for upkeeping of this Zoo for visits enjoyable by kids, youth, adults, old age persons, etc.
Edmonton Valley Zoo is a great place to bring family. The Zoo is well maintained, and the personnel are friendly and answer any questions about the animals.
The price for getting in was not bad but the cafe is expensive for what you get. Bring your own snacks is my recommendation. Also a lot of the exhibits were under construction or the animals were hiding. The playground inside is cool though and we got to watch them walk Lucy the elephant.
Great little zoo for a family outing. Nothing big or fancy but honestly its a well run facility with amazing staff who care. Go for the day and pack a lunch.
Location is super surround by inner city nature! Employees are friendly all across the zoo. Because of the weather, some theme sections are out of services. But, still they well open and maintained the other places at the same time. It was pleasant visit!
Price is good for what you get but it's nothing out of this world. Considering we have the WEM I thought we would have an awesome zoo. This zoo is quite boring. Most areas they cut off because of covid I'm guessing, so for example the lemurs, you could only see them from the outside view but they cut off the section to get close and look at them so we couldn't even see the good action from them. They don't have many animals so I'd expect to at least see the cool ones better. Every year I want to go and then every year I forget how unsatisfying it is. Our favourite part was the serval cat.
Great exhibits, animals looked happy, healthy and lots of keepers around to educate guests. Concessions nicely spread around the zoo, along with washrooms. Only thing that would make it even better is a larger selection of wildlife.
So much to see, and great for kids. Loved the interactive shows!
The day was a waste of time. Took 15 minutes to go through the entire zoo, there is very few animals. I take care of a girl with down syndrome who is EXEMPT from the mask mandate because of her disability, she does not wear a mask because it causes her to have a panic attack. I explained that to security and the other staff. We were treated with such disrespect, I’m disgusted that grown adults would treat a disabled girl like that. Will never go back and wouldn’t recommend to anyone, it’s a waste of time and money. Will only go to the Calgary zoo.
Will be better when all exhibit are open and you can wander freely again took less then an hour to get thru it. And hardly any animals out
Went here for the Christmas lights and really enjoyed it. The lights were very well done and got too see a few animals as well.
All elephants have basic physical, psychological and social requirements that must be satisfied if they are to experience a high level of welfare and well-being in captivity. They require very large spaces, complex natural terrain, pasture, activities that keep them physically and mentally stimulated, a proper social environment and an appropriate climate that allows them to be outdoors most of the time. Lucy's life at the Valley Zoo is deficient in many respects. She is socially isolated, lives in an enclosure that lacks space and complexity and she is forced to live through Edmonton's long cold winters. Lucy has also experienced a number of ongoing health issues that the zoo has not been able to resolve and that may be exacerbated by her captive circumstances. Lucy came to the zoo in 1977 at age 2, still a baby separated from her mother and family!
Cute zoo, nice views and landscape, fun petting zoo and some nice cute new interactive enclosures. loved being able to see Lucy the elephant and see her up close as we ran into her as she was on her daily walk
Really enjoyed the zoo today. Easy to see animals and was fun meeting the reindeer and Lucy the elephant. Very friendly staff and beautiful park. Enjoyed an ice cream at the ice cream shop. The weather was also fantastic.
The zoo has kept the elephant Lucy prisoner for 43 years and refuses to send her to sanctuary. A tropical animal doesn’t belong to a place keeping her in a cement box in winter. Free Lucy. Whoever paid to visit this zoo is accomplices to a crime.
It's great. I love seeing the animals. I do wish they were treated better. But they do look healthy and they are all so cute.
Had a great time here not long ago. I love that they are doing time slots, ensures that it’s not too busy. Quite a few attractions were closed, with renovations and covid I assume but still had a decent amount of things to see. Awesome that you can drink alcohol in the zoo now! Pro tip: buy the alcohol at the cafe before entering the zoo, once inside there were no places to buy alcohol.
This Zoo is rated worst zoo for years now because they are keeping an Asian elephant in horrible conditions for the last 42 years. Please do not support this crime against life. They are torturing Lucy and letting her die slow and alone. Its absolutely shameful.
We went Sunday june 30, we came around 12pm and it was already busy with a long line but surprisingly very fast. Forgot to carry my sunscreen and needed it for my baby, fortunately the zootique shop had some sunscreen available but it was a bit overpriced for its tiny size. Most of the animals was hidden or asleep when we went but we saw Lucy the elephant, the star of our day.
I loved the new open air red panda and lemur enclosures. Always nice to see the animals without the cages.
They have an elephant by the name of Lucy, that needs to be retired to a sanctuary. The poor baby looks so sad and lonely.
Great way to spend an afternoon. Some of the exhibits are in need of updating though.
It was a very fun and exciting experience. a fabulous place for both adults and children. Thank you very much to everyone who contributed.
Took my daughter (6) here today, she had a blast. We burned 3 hours here and my daughter would have stayed longer if we had time. My family is moving to the area next month and we will be strongly considering buying an annual family pass as my other children will enjoy it just as much as my 6 year old. The only criticism I have is the hot dog I got from the food truck, It was not great but I saw lot's of people with their own food and drinks so next time we'll pack our own food.
Nice place and well maintained ! Couldn’t see Lucy, the elephant. Some of the areas were closed . Maybe summer should be the ideal time to visit. Most of the animals and birds were sleeping and inactive. Hope they are waiting for summer too !
Not as big as the Calgary zoo but still had a lot of animals to see. There were a few enclosures we didn’t see the animals listed. Thought some of the enclosures were small for the animals especially the bigger ones. Got to see some animals I’ve never see in person up close. Great for young kids have a few play structures.
Not an adult experience. Impossible to photograph birds animals. Layers layers of cages .glass dirty for photos bring your own tissue to wipe them. Hard to enjoy with layers of cage and hard to find things like ped pandas. Lots entertainment for kids and they love it. Me i was disappointed compared to other zoos with visibilty to photograph. Did enjoy Lucy on her walk through the zoo. Pacing bored tiger made me see impact of confinement which disturbed me.
Not much to see. I found 1 ferris wheel and 1 train ride that my son could enjoy... but the zoo is pretty small. You could walk through it in 30 minutes. Dont plan this as an all day thing..
Great way to spend a couple hours with the family outdoors the season. Nice light displays, music and some wildlife.
I was surprised at how large it was considering its reputation. Although many animal sites were under renovation it was still enjoyable to explore with our grandchildren. We hope to explore again when it is warmer.
A small zoo, but still enjoyed by the little ones.
It is heartbreaking to see the conditions in which Lucy lives. Elephants live in the wild, have close-knit family ties, and mourn the death of members of their herd. Lucy is alone, suffering severely harsh weather conditions, and zoo officials refuse even basic care such as helping keep her warm. She is an Asian elephant and should not be kept in such cruel conditions. Lucy suffers from arthritis and symptoms of the constant boredom she endures shows up in repetitive habits like bobbing her head and swaying side to side. She is enclosed in an area with concrete floors, which exacerbates her arthritis and pain levels, and lacks intellectual stimulation, which science has proven elevates stress hormones and damages and even kills brain neurons (see work done by the Department of Neuroscience, Colorado College). Zoo and city officials attempt to explain away their inaction as regards Lucy’s welfare with specious arguments which have been debunked by various examples of older, ailing elephants successfully being moved to proper sanctuaries in places like Tennessee, where the climate is more suited for mammals such as Lucy. I can only hope that the good sense and compassion of the residents of and potential visitors to Edmonton prevent them from spending money at the Valley (Edmonton) Zoo - something that will only prolong Lucy’s suffering and be used to justify her continued captivity. Elk Island National Park is a successful example of care for wildlife in a natural setting, of which the City of Edmonton can take pride - not the captivity in cruel conditions of a such a highly intelligent creature like Lucy in this zoo.
The Zoo is in construction so not the easiest to get around. It is a small zoo and easy to see all the animals. There are great attractions for kids.
Poor Lucy. I am heartbroken just reading about her story - she is lonely, cold and in pain, I just cannot imagine what she has to endure on a daily basis. Can everyone see the terrible bull hook that is used to lead Lucy around by her ear? It's brutal. It doesn't matter how much the zoo claims that she is well cared for, she is enduring freezing cold winters, hardly normal for an elephant, with no relief for the pain in her joints due to the lack of a half-decent pool for her to use. Her keepers may indeed be very fond of Lucy, but if they really cared, they would allow her to go to a sanctuary to live out the rest of her days peacefully, with the freedom to roam with other elephants, and the best physical, mental and emotional care. Can you imagine being so alone for so many long years? I can't, it's unbearable to even think about. I have just read on here too that Lucy isn't being allowed to wear her warm coat? Why? What an absolutely terrible thing to do. I see that the zoo also has a Species Survival Program, which does sound very positive when you read it. I wonder, though, what sort of success has been achieved with large animals like Lucy? We see it over and over again, elephants born into captivity very often die in infancy, or a few years later from one of the diseases that can affect young captive elephants. It's heartbreaking. Animals aren't on this planet for our entertainment, to be locked up and stared at for a few minutes before moving on to the next. They deserve to be free, just as we do. Let Lucy go to sanctuary.
My wife and I went there for the first time in about 8 years. We couldn't believe the positive changes that have been made. I would say, visit our zoo.
Lots of animals, indoor and outdoor attractions. The farm animal section is very cool for the kids. Concessions and food on site for purchase.
Lots of animals, indoor and outdoor attractions. The farm animal section is very cool for the kids. Concessions and food on site for purchase.
Very few animals visible but outside ones were good. Can't wait for more areas to open
Lots of new guidelines in place to make sure that everyone can visit the zoo safely, yet everything went very smoothly and we still got to see all the animals. They let you stay as long as you want, you just have to book the entry time. Great time!
Enjoyed the masked staff. They were very friendly and informative. Also like the timed entry as it seemed so much easier to get around as the zoo was much less crowded. The new tiger exhibit was awesome
Some of the enclosures are almost inhumane, especially for the bald eagle. this is sad, even bald eagles need some room to stretch their wings. atleast try to hop and fly. There are some steep hills which can make it hard to push a manual wheelchair up. Some of the displays were tough to see over small walls for those in wheelchairs also. Food at the small restaurant was fantastic
I do not mind a Zoo when it's for conservation but this Zoo is not that. There has been a fight on for years about Lucy the Elephant's living conditions and her health issues. The City of Edmonton and the Edmonton Zoo refuse to let her retire after 46 years of service and drawing crowds for profit. They have refuse cries and offers for an independent Elephant vet to examine her, all to see if she is fit to travel. This is the excuse they give for not letting her go to a sanctuary. When money was raised to buy her a winter blanket, they gave it away saying she doesn't need one. Since when does it snow in Sira Lanka. She also stands on cement all day long. ELEPHANTS are social animals and travel many kms a day in herds with family members. She has been alone for years and years. The try to say her keepers are her companions, how would you feel being locked in a cage and the only interaction you had was 8 hours a day on another planet, not knowing the language, customs, or behaviors that keep you from being beaten or grabbed by a hook dug into you to make you move. It seems to be an Edmonton mentality. Look at West Ed Mall not allowed to buy dolphins anymore. Animal welfare in this city doesn't seem to exist if it is for Profit! Shame on you Edmonton City Council and Edmon Zoo! I am now boycotting you.
Its not the greatest zoo, but for the price I think it is! My son absolutely loves the zoo. I gave 4 stars and not 5 because a bathroom at the end of the zoo (by the elks and treat shop) would be amazingly helpful.
Layed out nice. Was a good day out. Nice walk. Had a cool interactive river rock type thing for the kids to splash in aswell. Was awesome so nice to have this in Edmonton. Was years since I've been and was so cool to share it with my daughter
Indeed a great place for a family trip
Too many empty cages and buildings. Calgarys' zoo is so much better.
Not alot of animals. Super skinny and sick looking
Great zoo
Great place for a family outing. Not to big or overpowering for the kids. Nice job on the renovations.
Not expensive a great outing . a nice walk outside.
Nothing to compare to Calgary's Zoo, but still is a very nice place! The barn yard has a cool design! ???? It would be wonderful, if explanations were put next to adapted animal cages! Where an animal was found, its name etc. Thank you!
Coming from a city with a large zoo, it was very surprising how great this zoo is. Everything is clean and the animals seem well taken care of. If you come at the right time, you can see an elephant being taken for a walk. The seal exhibit is wonderful. The red pandas have a great space too. I will definitely come back to this zoo. My only problem with this zoo is the area that the birds of prey are kept. The don't seem like they have enough room to spread their wings.
We went here for a birthday party and were part of a zoo safari. We were given an awesome guided tour of the facility and animals. The kids got to interact with a rabbit and an armadillo. It was a joy to see their reactions and excitement at the zoo. A good time was had by all.
Many caring people (including Bob Barker - host of The Price is Right) have tried to convince the Edmonton Zoo officials to release Lucy to an elephant sanctuary for many years. Poor Lucy having to endure the cold Edmonton winters and living all alone for years with no other elephants. We all know that elephants are very social animals and nothing about her current living conditions is natural for her species. Lucy has more than paid her dues and deserves to be retired to a warm weather sanctuary where she can be with others of her kind for her remaining life. I implore Edmonton citizens to make your voices heard for Lucy. Insist that she be examined by independent vets and sanctuary representatives so that she can be moved from this cruel situation. People from all over the world are sadly watching Lucy's situation while cheering for other older elephants that have been rescued from other zoos and bad situations. It is now Lucy's turn. Please help her. From Colorado, USA
Overall good experience for me. Now i know the actual size of the red panda, the squirrel monkey and some other small animals that i only saw on pictures. Most important part washrooms are clean.
Nice place to visit with family and their ice cream is yum
Well it's a zoo. Animals, fresh air! Staff has always been nice when we have gone. Worth the time. Sometimes there are events so check their calendar before going to get the right time. During COVID-19 I suggest wearing a mask. ????
We went at night, and it was about 615ish and the wolves were howling when we walked in so cool! Felt very safe through COVID. The red panda was out and super cute. It was fun to spot the animals in thr dark!
Went here with family Monday 20 and bit disappointed about the price during this construction going on, some of the exhibits are empty but what I love the most is to see this elephant out of her/his cage, freely walking around but with two attendant making sure that everyone is safe. Have a great spot to take a picture
Nice visit to the Zoo. Lots of construction going on so it's a little bit to get around right now. The kids love seeing all the animals inside and outside at all the enclosures. Was able to see Lucy out for a walk.
Great place to spend the day with family. Arrows placed everywhere to maintain distance with Covid. Even got a chance to see Lucy the elephant! Only complaint is construction going on throughout and it seemed like certain areas were shut right down due to this. But will be back again and hopefully everything is open.
Excellent attraction for the whole entire family. The zoo has gone through some renovations and it definitely looks better than before. This zoo is not as big as the Calgary zoo. Free parking and short walking distance to the entrance.
Was very disappointed they took the little train out. Pace needs a lot of upgrading looks very run down. Enclosures seems very small felt bad for the animals :(
The Valley Zoo has an excellent selection of animals and the grounds and facilities are very well maintained. To see everything at a moderate pace takes around 2.5 hours with a group of adults which feels about right, you aren't left wanting more or feeling exhausted from walking around all day to try and see everything. The price is also particularly friendly, at only ~$15/person. If you're there in the early afternoon there's a decent chance you'll get to see the handlers taking Lucy the elephant out for a walk along the paths.
Not bad. Easy and quick zoo to do. Walkable for kids. Spent about 3 hours.
Nice for a stroll through with baby. Kids also love the playgrounds and red pandas. Lots of things to do regardless of the lack of animals.

The zoo had a number of exhibits and areas closed for our visit, but it was well laid out for social distancing. The new community farm looks like a great area and the diner there serves up some really good food.
extremely cheap and such an amazing time for family, dates, really any experience/ situation ! would recommend definitely going after lunch hours so the animals are not sleeping and hiding amazing place !
The new exhibits are great, upgrades are very well done.
Very nice little family zoo. Perfect for Sunday walk... Employees are friendly and knowledgeable
They keep their elephant, Lucy, alone with no other elephants, in too-small enclosures, and neglect her health. She has been there for OVER FORTY years. Lucy deserves to go to a sanctuary, and the zoo and city council keeps pulling strings to stop that from happening. Please do not support the zoo, they are actively torturing this creature. If you do go, demand that Lucy is sent to a sanctuary for her remaining years.
It was nice. Due to covid they have a one way path basically which took some of the fun away. My kids really enjoyed it.
They have updated the farm area and red panda area. Lots of covid updates as well. We really enjoyed spending the time there. You have to go in a clockwise direction to save people from doubling up but it was ok and didn't limit us much to what we saw. Just missed out on the indoor lizards and bats.
Zoo Lights is fairly quiet and very easy to distance with other patrons. Saw several animals including tiger and wolves. Hot chocolate and snacks available.
Nice place to spend a morning or afternoon. Many wild creatures on display. A must see.
Enjoyable visit. I'll definitely return.
Love the zoo. Wish they had a bear and a lion. Kids love it. Always fun to go back.
On a nice warm day like it was today, many of the animals will be sleeping, or hiding in their dens to stay cool. Try to visit on a more temperate day perhaps to see more critters playing about. We did get to see Lucy the Elephant go for a walk though, which was quite neat. A relatively small zoo, so you won't be spending a long time here unless you give every enclosure a good many minutes and stop to enjoy the scenery more than once. Give yourself 2-3 hours tops, give or take depending on the person.
Would have loved to see the sloths today, but everything was great otherwise our favs were probably the Red Pandas and the goats of the roof! Everyone who works there is super friendly too, but I found the Gift shop lady kind of rude. We quickly checked it out upon leaving the Zoo and as we got in she said "you have five mins" then a moment later..."bring your stuff to the front" um, no thanks, we won't buy anything at all in that case.
Covid safety was good until the foolish line up in the middle of the zoo right where everyone is eating, so you're standing together and family's are all running around and eating. What's the point in limiting capacity if you create pinch points where everyone is forced together. Zoo is ok for something to do but not worth the risk.
There were too many wasps for us to enjoy our time here. My wife was also stung. I'd stay away until they address the issue!
It's a nice zoo. Most of the animals have almost enough room. No signage for disabled parking, and the lot is gravel. Should sign that there is disability parking on the paved area...
The zoo has done a great job of allowing people to come and see the animals, balanced with keeping physical distance and putting health first. Arrows and lots of sanitizer stations as well as people to answer questions and ensure people are following guidelines.
Great service from staff, experienced and knowledgeable handlers. Great outing for the family to learn about the animals of our area and around the world. Usually great interactive actives for visitors. ( obveously with covid this has changed the zoo experience for now as too be expected.) That being said not all indoor areas and activities are open for that reason. But never the less its still a great way to get out and spend the afternoon. ????
I went here with my wife and daughters last weekend. I was really disappointed by this place. Half the animals weren't even in there enclosures and the other half were sleeping. Barely got to see anything. They really need to revamp the place. Calgary zoo is much better in comparison.
Has covid restrictions in place, but because we live in Alberta and its December, the masks are dual purpose and keeps your face warm too lol. Wasnt busy, but we had prepaid tickets. No indoors, except bathroom. Lights are nice and kids enjoyed. Roughly 25 mins to walk through light display, 5/5 would recommend for 3 and up. Too cold for babies I feel though. Have fun, and stay safe ????
We visited August 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic. It was actually more enjoyable this way because they limited the number of people and family groups travelled through the zoo one at a time. We actually got to see all the animals without trying to see around other people the whole time. Everyone was very courteous and patient. The zoo has adapted itself very well to keep people safe during the pandemic and they have some recent upgrades that are fantastic too. This zoo gets better every time we vist.
Enjoyed the zoo, safety messures in place seem to be followed by most people. Fortunately I was there on a day when most of the animals were out and about. Will definitely go back. It is a little difficult for hearing impaired people to understand what the staff are trying to communicate.
If you are expecting exotic animals and amazing interpretive displays don't bother with this zoo. However if you want a local and affordable outing for your family I think it is great. My two year old absolutely loves the petting zoo, the "train" and watching the seals. I think she would be content going daily all summer. Considering the cost of the naturally Edmonton pass (which includes the zoo) I think the zoo is great value for families with small kids. And the petting zoo really is amazing compared to what I expected.
Spent quality time with a toddler visiting the farm animals. Unexpected bonus was Lucy the elephant taking her daily 2 pm walk. Gosh, she's huge. Free merry go round ride capped off a perfect visit. So much to see to keep kids busy. I bought a season pass. Very affordable.
Great price for what you get. Plus there is a CAA discount. Lovely red panda exhibit and great location for the zoo. Sadly the elephant wasn't available for viewing due to some construction but there is enough for the family to see and do!
Our family loves to come here for outdoor time. Though there aren't as many animals as we'd like, there are so many other things to keep kids busy like various climbing areas. We can easily spend most of an afternoon at the zoo!
Go with your family and you will enjoy the Zoo. Location is a plus as it has other parks around it. Lucy the elephant was one of the main attraction at the zoo. Staff is courteous and feiendly. Gift shop has some interesting accessories for kids and adults alike.
Everyone enjoyed the 4 hour visit to the Zoo today. There were eight of us from ages 18-55. I haven’t been for a while and there are some lovely new facilities. We attended three presentations put on my Zoo staff and they were really informative and worth the trip. The Zoo keeper scattered food all around the lynx’s enclosure. The cat came out and found all the treats. She was beautiful. The Seals love their new pond! They were so happy jumping and playing. The Red Panda’s are in a temporary enclosure where you can easily see them - SO adorable. Even the sloths were active. There were only a few animals hiding so we saw almost everyone. The Zoo is worth the money.
I hadn't been to the Edmonton Zoo in over 20years and was curious to see what changes had been made. I was not disappointed. Great lay out, lots to see and enjoy. We went first thing in the morning and saw lots of animals - we were pleasantly surprised to see Lucy out walking around with her zoo team. The kids really enjoyed the barnyard area; especially the goats on the roof. Kudos to the zoo staff for providing a clean and socially distant opportunity for us to visit. Great visit and we will definately be back!
Very friendly staff. A very laid back atmosphere. I have taken my children there since "the stroller" days, and will continue long into the future. After finding out the fiscal restrictions placed on their operations, I now understand why its not very "flashy", but just a quality afternoon of zoo animal watching. As a side note, I recommend animal watching while eating ice cream. :-)
So where to start .. we waited over an hour for lackluster food that was not cooked properly and we maybe saw 10 animals in total that brought a smile to our faces . This place needs a major boost in the manager department I see a lot of potential if it was to be properly taken care of but as it stands terrible I would not go again
Very impressed with their protocol for screening for Covid on entry to the zoo. I felt very safe. Overall was lovely, lots to do, to keep the kids busy.
I was actually disappointed with the zoo. Has been awhile since I was there and it is not that great. Not much to see and thought after all these years it would be better.
We visited with our two kids on a cold Thursday. Despite the construction we had a great time and stayed for 4 hours. The kids did spend almost an hour petting the goats and sheep in the urban farm. The large cats were active and very enjoyable to watch. At many times we felt like we had the zoo to ourselves.
One way traffic is great, it's nice to be able to go inside the buildings now too. Rarely see Lucy, she's usually behind buildings. Would be nice to be able to see the night creatures and for the train to be running.
Visited the zoo yesterday with grand children, 2 are 10 years old and 1 is 8. Many of the animal enclosures were empty with no animals to see. Have to admit for 5 people to visit the zoo with minimal animals present we felt the admission was more expensive than it should have been, we were lead to believe there were way more animals on site then were actually there as per website. Staff were friendly and concessions were expensive. Have to admit I would not return.
I like the zoo. I don't like finding out you have to wear a mask. it's all outdoors. there's no reason for this. there's no science to back up outdoor masking. save your money. not worth it
Went later at night. Nice light display but not alot of animals to see.
Not worth the price to attend, alot of construction and developments taking place. Once all of that is done, will try and go back to see if it is more interactive and engaging for the children
Haven't been in years. My son loved all the animals. The renovations look amazing. Always a fun place to spend a day.
Fairly small, several attractions were closed when we were there, fairly pricey when it took us less than an hour to see the entire place. Wouldn't go again.
I am very sad for Lucy, living her lonely life in this bone chilling space. She looks so sad surrounded by concrete and fake trees! They don't even give her a pool. Don't bring your children to see such a sad spectacle. Instead tell the zoo to send her to the sanctuary that waits for her and then our kids can see pictures of Lucy thriving and happy!
This is a great place to take the family on a nice day. Some spots could use updating but it seems like theyre adding new attractions every time I go there.
Great experience. Disappointed the elephant was off on a walk. Super friendly staff.
