REVIEWS OF Karl's Cuisine, Winery and Brewery IN Sault Sainte Marie

The atmosphere is really cozy friendly staff. The blackened chicken pasta hit the spot. The pasta suace lacked flavor since the sauce was really had the look of an orange sauce. The side green salad was a great companion to this dish. The chicken was blackened just right.

Casey Donovan

Very ehh. Nice atmosphere, cool to sit up on the deck. Wine reasonably priced. Do not get the spinach and artichoke dip. For being $13 I was something a little more than wheat thins and microwaved dip in a paper bowl. And I had to put separate for food and drinks which is a little inconvenient.

Samantha Campbell

Was a wonderful meal, even in a snow storm with few clients, the food was top notch, and the beer was excellent.

JC

The fish dip was ok. The hamburger was terrible. I knew when the waitress indicated you could only get a hamburger cooked one way, medium well I should have ordered something else. Pre-packaged hamburger, heated up for $13.00. What a mistake eating here. The waitress was vet nice.

Heather Burmeister

We wanted a place to have a beer and bite to eat while we waited for ships to come in. Beautiful sunny day and the upper patio looked perfect. The waitress told us there was no room for a table of 5 on the patio. Seemed weird because it looked like not many people up there...it was 2pm on a Wednesday. She seated us inside. I went up to the patio and there were 5 people up there and an open table for 6. I came down and asked her if she was sure we couldn't sit up there. She said yes no room. I told I can see there is room and she said it was a shift change so that was why we couldn't. We left and spent our $$ at Moloneys Pub. I think she didn't want to go up and down the steps. Bad service.

Sean Hasten (tehseano)

Great service top to bottom. The food was phenomenal and our server Morgan was amazing! First time there, definitely not my last!

Willy Ricardo

Food is very good as is the service. Everyone in our group enjoyed the food they ordered. #localguides

As a chef I traveled all over the world. When I traveled to the Saulte I stumbled upon this restaurant and have to say the food, staff and in house brewed IPA BEER and wine were amazing. Be sure to save room for the home made dessert. I asked for the chef and Karl came to meet me tabel side. The saulte is lucky to have a resturaunt of this calibre here. Thanks for the great food and service and exceptionally clean restaurant. Looking forwards to my next trip and dining experience at Karl's cuisine.

Super accommodating to a larger group. Fun outdoor atmosphere! And good food, especially the whitefish pizza!

Karl's has great food and exceptional service. Many of the foods are locally produced. Fresh whitefish and walleye are great. Food is seasonal with fresh menus by season. Flights of craft brews are a must. Peak times can be a little busy but parking and seating is ample. Appetizers should be shared among the table as they are too much for one person. It's pricey but worth the investment.

Pleasantly surprised. Great food, although portions were on the smaller side. Highly recommend their rueben, and the whitefish spread was delicious. Tried a few beers, all very good. Didn't try the higher higher ABV varieties as they were out of those. We also got a wine sampler. The wines were decent but not exceptional. Cozy setting, and our server was very attentive. Prices were reasonable.

Literally right in front of the locks.. best spot for lunch if you like watching the freighters go by.. Super simple eatery, walk-up service with a small selection, but they have wine slushies! Shrimp po'boy wrap was great and fresh. Staff was extremely nice and attentive.

Chicken wrap was out of this world!!! Very unique and neat place. 5*

i got chicken rice soup here and organic coffee and it was very good!! you also get free refills on the coffee and they have a little spot where you get it yourself so you can make it the way you want and put it whatever you want in it. they were very allergy-friendly and i love how eco-friendly they are. they have bamboo plates and eco-friendly biodegradable cups and lids and silverware which is very nice. it was also very cute inside and was clean. as soon as someone left they cleaned up the table which was nice. i definitely recommend eating there.

This place is a gem. The wife is gluten free and finding decent places that don't ask "What is gluten?" can be tough. The menu features many GF options and my wife got her pizza. She was delighted. I had a Reuben . I was also delighted with my choice. Although we walked in for lunch, and the place was packed on a beautiful September's day, room was found for us and the staff remained friendly throughout. The prices are very reasonable and there are many, many healthy choices.

Rob Franzo

We ate dinner here. The food was excellent. My wife had a walleye dish and I had blackened chicken alfredo. Both were very good. The beer selection was OK and the ones we tried were good. Service was very friendly and attentive.

George Mazich

Service was horrible, was not asked one time if we wanted refills. Also wasn’t asked how our food was until we got our bill. Our waitress asked if we wanted music and I said sure after she said she’ll play any music so I said pop music and she looked at the music and said I don’t like that music I’m not gonna play music. I got a burger and the waitress asked how I wanted it cooked I said medium rare, I get my burger and it’s fully cooked almost over cooked I was very displeased. Then we had to ask the girl who brought our food for refills and she brought us those and then I asked if there was any ketchup and she said “should’ve thought of that before” just realizing what she said I said what and she goes “you should’ve thought of that before I went downstairs” I felt bad for asking her because she wasn’t even our waitress. I will NEVER go to this restaurant again I wouldn’t even rate it a 1 star but there is no option of zero. Worst place I have ever aten.

The food seems to be prepared. It is the first time I've had a Greek salad with potato salad in the center. I ordered the Whitefish Pizza it was quite tasty, with a bit of spice. We also had the Greek pizza and that was good with a lot of feta on it. I also ordered a wine flight. The wine was a little on the weak side but then I have found that most wines in Traverse City seem to be a little weak and lacking in body.

We have vacationed several times in Sault Ste. Marie and Karls is our favorite restaurant. Last night we had dinner there and it was even better than I remember. Our waiter, Will, was attentive and described all of the specials so well I wanted to try everything! I tried the special, Chicken Calamatta, and it was so delicious! I have a dairy allergy and Will worked with the chef to accommodate me. My husband had the Prime Rib special and it was the highlight of our trip for him so far. My son loved the pizza, and my daughter had the Ceasar Salad, she said the best part was the plentiful bacon. If you eat at one restaurant in this area, eat at Karl's. The food is so awesome and the ambiance is lovely, the ships going by entertained my son through the meal.

Leah Simi

Had the spinach artichoke dip, followed by the blackened chicken Alfredo, then the turtle cheesecake. Everything was delicious. Pair the cheesecake with the "not your white wine" for best results.

Kristan Ozier

I enjoyed the unique starter with its unorthodox serving style, I also enjoyed the entree most of all which was perfectly proportioned and delivered an amazing burst of great flavor. At last the dessert which was just as fantastic and perfect providing rich taste and just right hints of other flavors. Overall, this restaurant is a must go and definitely is not there to waste your time. I highly recommend it!

Been here a few times with mixed experiences... with a group it's a little less enjoyable as the space is small, but a group up to 6 is doable. If it's you and a friend or another couple, sitting at the bar is great. It's a bit on the pricey side but really good locally sourced food. The service is excellent. Decent selection of beer on tap, and make sure you take a look at the dessert tray - their creme brulee is great

My friends and I stopped at Karl's for lunch. We were not sure what to expect. The beer was good, but I have to give an endorsement of their beef pasties. Best one I ever had and I sampled several on my trip.

Fantastic views with fresh and creative food. It was not stunning, however it was good and the view of the locks was spot-on. They have a brewery and wine making facility upstairs. Unfortunately, we were not able to sit on the patio as promised. All of their ad say patio view. However they did not have enough servers. The service was excellent.

Michael Baumgartner

Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. Thank you. The pretzel and cheese were amazing.

LeRoy Unruh

Terrible place. First they sat us in a corner at the smallest table in the place. Then they were out of beer. A frikkin brewery that's out of beer! Extremely limited menu. Waited forever for our food. When it finally came it was so spicy that we could not eat any of it. Frozen French fries with no taste. Bread was hard and dry. Do not eat here.

Steven Ford

Walking we had high expectations for the quality of the food. No one walked over to offer us any drinks after sitting down for 10 min. Comfort Mac N Cheese is the definition of bland. On a positive note he waitress was very friendly.

Had a delicious meal at Karl's with a great view of the Soo locks. Our server, Will, was friendly, helpful and attentive and made our evening that much more enjoyable.

I went to their grand reopening(covid19), at their particular location they had been open for 12 years, meet the owner(Paula)/co-owner[i assume her husbands name is karl], had a few of their craft ciders, which were amazing! Apparently they have like 25+wines and ciders they brew in house, and pretty nice food as well, their basic wrap has everything i could want on it, i think the amount of chicken i wanted was a little extra but it was just like a dollar more. The upstairs has an outdoor patio, i really hope they have some musical entertainment the next time i go. Ill be definitely having a wine party because i know I'll love half of their in house wines!

Scott Michael

Good service and food. The red wine was good and the flight of 4 beers I had was excellent. Great place to watch the ships go into the locks.

JF Jones

We had a great lunch and I had a glass of blackberry hard cider which I liked so much that I bought a howler to go.

Ali Bazzi

Good food. Great view. I recommend the U.P. Pasty and if you want dessert and love rich chocolate, go for the chocolate cherry torte, you will not be dissatisfied

Wayne Geiser

Very nice experience. I had Elliot's chicken special and it was delicious. I could tell this sandwich was made well with fresh ingredients. I tried the pasty which was kind of a bust compared to the chicken sandwich. The brussel sprouts were a bit dry . The breeze and cute from the roof top dining area was nice.

Nice stop for comfort food and good beer. We didn't try their wine but they all sounded delicious. The pasty was decent.

Every year when we travel all over the U.P. in August, we make a special stop here without fail ... this year was no exception. Karl's is a step above most with outstanding food, wine, & service. Every employee goes out of their way to make you feel they're genuinely happy to see you, the food is incredible, and I never leave without purchasing several bottles of Superior Coast wine to take home. Extra bonus...their Blueberry Vinaigrette salad dressing...they even fixed me a container to purchase & take home. If you're visiting the Soo, they're right on Portage, across from the Locks...the bonus is you can enjoy your time there and watch ships from Superior & Huron come through. Don't miss out on this very special place ... lunch or dinner...you won't be disappointed.

J.T. Fischer

Stumbled on Karl's and couldn't be happier. The atmosphere is fantastic. Our server was incredible. William's description of the dishes and drinks made us salivate just hearing about it. Once the food came it surpassed even his description. The food is amazing and the hard cider is the perfect blend of flavor and tartness. I would highly recommend stumbling on them when in town.

This was one of our stops for Tag a Brew. It took us about 6.5 hours to get here from lower Michigan. The gentleman working the bar was super friendly and we had great conversation about our travels throughout the state hitting up breweries that participate with Tag a Brew. He could see my disappointment when we realized that they were all sold out of the tags that had a charm. I keep the charms on my necklace and my boyfriend wears the tags. The bartender took our name and address so he could mail us the charm when they got more in. Received my charm in the mail today!!! This is AMAZING customer service!!!

Hallbilly Homestead

Excellent service, surprisingly good wine (inexpensive, too), and some of the best pasties I've had in a while.

We were looking for a nice restaurant to celebrate my birthday and our recent anniversary. We read the reviews on Karl's Cuisine and it sounded like the perfect place. We were definitely not disappointed. We waited a very short time for the perfect window table. The food was outstanding, our waitress was so friendly and efficient, and the view was very special. We would recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for an amazing dining experience while in Sault Ste. Marie.

The food was fresh as advertised and the staff was attentive and friendly. When the restaurant is full, it's noisy. But I would easily go back because of the relaxed atmosphere and meals.

Visiting Karl's Cuisine was an all around PERFECT dining experience for me and my family while have a full day of fun on vacation here at the Soo Locks. The FOOD was SO GOOD! From the beef stew dish to the chicken Alfredo, and the burgers too! Not to mention the huge homemade pretzel! We were all VERY IMPRESSED with the staff kindness, so much so that we wanted to leave them an extra tip. My husband and I went out on a date night Saturday evening with a reservation for the patio at 7 pm. We were seated promptly and our drinks came fairly fast. However, it went downhill fast from there. On a Saturday night they had ONE server for whole patio area! That’s 8 tables! He was very nice but stretched thin. Long story short we waited an hour and a half for our food and it was cold. Not to mention the order was wrong. He corrected the order then it came burnt. The waiter took my plate off from the bill when I asked. My husband said his meal was just ok but we still had to pay $60 for a bad experience. As soon as we left we got doughnuts. We are locals but unfortunately we will not be back.

Jacinto Arreola

We ate here a year ago. Great food and drinks! Special thanks to waitress for recommendations. Definitely will come back when in the area.

justin zegerius

On the food: 5 stars. Fantastic everything. The salmon cake salad was delicious. Great flavoring in the cakes which stood alone, but add fresh greens and veggies with the vinaigrette, and wow. Perfect. The Reuben was done differently in that the corned beef was one thick slice that literally melted in your mouth. The sauce wasn't overpowering so you could taste the beef. Perfectly grilled bread too.

Laura J

Grew up in Michigan and ❤️ a good pasty. Hit the pasties jackpot at Karl’s. We ate the spinach and artichoke dip as well and it was very good.

Erik Smith

High class dining, incredible service, great wine selection, and overall great atmosphere. The staff make you feel like you are the most important person in the world.

Nick Lawrence

Pretzels so large come with a hanger. Beware Pasties burnt. Great view of the Locks.

Nancy Meadow

Great meal with the family, and catered to a gluten free menu very well. Wine was VERY reasonable too!

Kayla Porrazzo

I love this place, the chef is creative. The food is wonderful! The view of the Soo locks is magical in the evening with snow all around, steam rising and lights glowing.

Eric Straavaldsen

My wife and I were seated at 7:00 pm and got our food at 8:30 pm. Had to wait 1 hour and 30 minutes only for them to get our order wrong. We waited another 10 minutes for them to bring out my wife’s sweet potato fries which they missed on their first attempt and those came out burnt. My food was decent but they give you such a small portion of fries and it’s a $2 up-charge for them. The fries I got were almost cold too. The only saving grace was our server was good and was doing his best but he had the entire upstairs patio to himself which looked to be at least 8 tables. Obviously this place is understaffed and needs help in all areas. I will say though that Brad, who brews the beer, does an amazing job. That is some of best stuff I’ve had.

Food was alright. I had a blueberry wheat beer and didn't have a second. It was very bland. Service was quick. But appetizer can't out with meal. I can say I've had better and worse. Has a great view of ships

With fresh, locally scourced and sustainable food, except a great meal. You will likely need a reservations and for good reason. Eveything is excellent, from burgers and steak to pasta and fish. Good beer selection and fair prices. Easily the best place to eat in the U.P.

John Cordell

Ok food. Terrible wine. Everything is “recycled” (I am sure for a food cause!) but even the wine flight was served in plastic cups. Definitely overpriced.

Katrina

Great food, great craft beer & cider. Also has a large selection of local wines. Dine inside or on the scenic upper outside deck right next to the Soo Locks.

April vandervest

All the food, beer, and wine is made in house. No complaints at all. Very personable staff and decent prices. Definetly a place to go.

Nathan H.

Moloney's had been recommended to me but it was at capacity when I stopped by. Fortunately I was traveling solo and was able to squeeze in at Karl's. I'm glad I walked the extra few blocks to Karl's. The food and wine were excellent. I had the crab cake naan and a glass of white wine and I'd recommend both. The only thing I will say is go early on Friday or Saturday because if you go too late, they will run out of certain items, specifically the white fish. Additionally, they're a little understaffed (to me) so if it's busy expect a wait. That said, everyone is very friendly so it's worth it.

Just rating this on the pasty I had. After being referred by a local for a good pasty, I was not impressed with it. The crust wasn't flakey, too many carrots that over-powered the taste, little beef, and there appeared to be caraway seed in it, which gave it an odd flavor. The service was fast and pleasant.

Bad. Just bad. Staff was loud and ignored us completely. Food was over cooked and so spicy we couldn't eat it. Sat with empty drink glasses for 15 minutes while the staff talked to their friends and cleaned around us. Wound up eating a pizza that tasted like Bobalie crust with canned sauce. Avoid this place at all cost.

Ericka Kruszka

Such a good place! The prices concerned us at first, but everything is much better than expected. The prices are low for the quality of the food. We were so happy with everything and Erin, our server knew the menu so well and the restaurant. For a casual and humble setting, the food was better than good. It was such a nice place to find on a cold winter night.

Kev M

Great stew & potatoes, good pizza, appetizers we're okay. I liked the pretzel w/cheese better than the chicken "tenders".

The food and drinks are always great. The view upstairs is spectacular (of the locks) and still everyone is "socially distanced".

Every year we come up from Tennessee for a week in Brimley MI. Karl's Cuisine is a "tradition" for us. Lunch is always delicious...coffee is great and the service terrific.

Gia Wilkerson

Just had supper with my friend at "Karl's Cuisine, Cafe and Winery." What an incredible experience. The gluten free selection surprised me; it took me a while to choose my entree as there were so many interesting options. Brianna, our server, was very patient with me and explained the selections available, how they were made and so on. She made dinner that much more enjoyable as her service was outstanding. She also explained where the bread came from as it was the highlight of the meal. Fellow celiacs will understand what I'm talking about as good gluten free bread is hard to come by.

Curtis Sarvas

The special tonight was a Southern recipe of creamy light cheese grits topped with fresh leaf spinach and shrimp. Delicious! My girlfriend had Walleye, mash potatoes, and a mixture of vegetables. Fantastic taste. The craft beer and wine were good. Service was great. We watched the freighters go up and down in the Soo Locks. We would go to Karl's again in a heartbeat!

Their Stromboli’s are absolutely amazing for lunch and we’ve never left disappointed after having dinner & wine. I’m a pretty picky eater, so when they comped us a plate of oxtail on NYE a few years ago, I was skeptical. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was! They have very talented chefs, extremely friendly and professional staff with a great atmosphere.

John Lalik

We dined here 1.5 years ago during the very early spring. It was a great time to visit the area as there were not many tourists and temperatures were comfortable too. My partner consumes a gluten free (GF) diet per choice and we so enjoyed our meal as they offered a GF baguette, yum ????. I don’t remember exactly what we ordered other than the spinach dip, however, it was delish enough that we had anticipated returning during this trip too. Thankfully I called prior to arriving as they no longer offer the GF bread. Per the staff on the phone they just removed it from the menu. Kind of sad as GF bread lasts forever in the freezer and you can defrost it at room temp quickly or cut in half grilled with butter/garlic. Due to the pandemic a smaller menu was offered? Unfortunately we chose to pass this time and perhaps try again next year? Maybe they will have the GF bread choice again that was so yummy with the spinach dip? It is always so nice to share a meal with a loved one when you both enjoy EVERYTHING from start to finish, including something as small as a bread basket. Well, for me/us bread and butter lovers, the bread basket is as important as the meal!!????

Great view of the locking through of ships .Food was good and servers were nice and efficient . Nice selection of beer on hand . On the roof is a camera for viewing ships online ( Duluth Harbor Cams) .Thanks Karl for allowing this camera to add to this awesome website .

Super good food! We ordered ahead and picked-up for takeout. The dining room was pretty full when we came. The takeout hostess was really communicative and even called us back about out order. Would definitely get the whitefish skillet again (but they were out so I had haddock instead)

Kate Perich

Had the stew, and southwest soup, both were good. We tried the wine flight but didn’t care for those selections this time around. The staff and atmosphere were great, and the girl who created their unique and artistic trays was excited to talk about her excellent work. Give this place a visit!

Austin Spencer

OMG. This food is to die for! I went with a party of nine and we all ordered something different and I ended up trying almost everyones food and each bite got better and better. I ended up finishing everyone’s meals lol. I am a coffee lover and their organic coffee is AMAZING, I had 3 cups! They are extremely allergy friendly, their gluten free chicken strips are the best. They are also super eco friendly, all their cups, plates, and utensils are biodegradable. I highly recommend the Karl Salad! Overall, amazing experience, wonderful service, they were super friendly. I am definitely coming back!

We found Karl’s mainly for a place to eat by the Soo lock. Even though the reviews weren’t as many as the other restuarants, I took a chance based on the great menu. The place doesn’t look big in the main floor and it was busy with lunch crowd already. The service was quick and attentive. Petula (wasn’t our waitress) was constantly checking on every customer. He was great. One thing I’m impressed is that they have a sign on the table explaining they won’t give you plastic straws, which heavily pollute the marine life. However, upon request they will give you paper straw. Instantly, i like this restaurant who is making effort for the earth. The menu has wide selections with something from the traditional American food, and something very similar to California or big city hip style menu. My husband and I both so enjoy the lunch here. We had a cup of soup (curry sweet potato) and half sandwich (me: crab cake panini / hubby:.Elloit’s chicken). we were so impressed of how fresh the ingredients. It was April, still snow in the ground. And every bite with the fresh basil reminds us of summer. The curry sweet potato soup is loaded with vegetable chunks too. My crab cake panini, i could taste chunks of crab and the zesty slaw elevate the flavor. The place is simple and clean. The food is exceptional in our opinion. We don’t care how much we spend on food, as long as the food is good. And we travel worldwide and around US (me: 1.5 million miles/ hubby: 2 million miles) for our business and vacation. We have been to many restaurants. I can honestly said Karl’s is high up in our list. We both don’t drink but we believe their local brew beers have to be great too. We live over 2 hours away. We certainly will return to Karl’s if we are in the area. I’m actually concerned if I share our great experience, when we return later we will probably find it hard to get a table. But i have to share how good this place is. Highly recommend to stop by here if you are in the area. BTW, thought we don’t need it, they do have good selections of GF and Vegetarian.,

They have the best dinner in town. They always have good deserts as well. Prices seem to be about $20-25 a plate.

Debra Trinklein

Amazing food, service, and location. Seating outside has a wonderful view of the locks. The burger I had was delicious and the desert was awesome. Put-put golf course right next door makes this a great place to eat and then go have some fun. Magnificent restaurant!

jess maceri

Food was excellent, prices very reasonable....where else in the UP are you going to get roasted Brussels Sprouts with sweetened almonds. Sitting on the roof top patio our family of nine could enjoy Cajun whitefish Reubens and burgers while watching 1000 ft iron ore freighters come through the Soo Locks heading into Lake Superior. This is the place for best food and awesome view.

Debbie LeBlanc

We sat on patio. Nice view of locks and couldn't see foot traffic or street. We have the salad du jour and it was fresh and delicious. We also split a beef pasty that was exceptional. I would highly recommend if you like good food.

Joel Dunphy

The staff here is AHHMAZING if you have children accompanying you on your visit. Morgan our server was super engaging and filled with information about their menu and took the time to chat with us. Petula probably saved the moment for our dinner. While we were just about to have our toddler take a walk outside from throwing something across the table, she came over to introduce toddler busy activities. It was perfection. William was super awesome as well, playing and interacting with our son while he roared and well, yelled like a dinosaur and William played along. Not to mention, the beer is perfectly priced and delicious and while we all enjoyed our meal, I will just say my whitefish skillet was slightly dry but the sauce saved it. A visit worth going! Karl and Paula... Shout out to your staff, because they deserve it. We visit 8/7/19 at 7pm.

Over priced mediocre food and obnoxiously over friendly staff! The food was not the worst food I've ever had but it left much to be desired. I ordered the portabella mushroom dinner with garlic roasted red mashed potatoes. The mushroom was topped with quinoa, spinach, and artichokes and also topped with a balsamic vinegar glaze. The spinach flavor was lost in this dish; I kept thinking kale would have really made the dish better. The garlic roasted red mashed potatoes tasted like GARLIC and nothing else. I wasn't impressed. My husband ordered the maple plank whitefish and it was awful. The only flavor that could be tasted was basil! The upcharged macaroni and cheese side was bland and chewy! It wasn't as spectacular as the server made it out to be, honestly boxed mac 'n cheese tastes cheesier. The extra $1.50 was a complete waste of money. The whitefish dish was not worth $20 and the mushroom dish was not worth $17. The glass of sangria was ok, but I can get a very delightful bottle from Costco for the $7 I paid for a glass here. Too pricey for what was served. Our server was fine but easily flustered, and the server for the table next to us was so gooey and fake we couldn't wait to get out of there. Also they still cart out a dessert tray... how out dated, and they really do not like no for an answer on dessert. Very pushy, I can box one up to go for you... uhm NO THANKS! We couldn't wait to leave.

Mary Lawson

Stroganoff lacked flavor. Whitefish had too much sauce. Took forever to get our food. Nice waitress but I don't think we will be back.

Daniel Greenspan

Sooo great! We had a trip planned to Sault Ste. Marie and found this place while searching local dining spots. Could not be happier this place showed up to stop because everything was great. The food, atmosphere, view of the locks and service was perfect. Please come here, they have everything you could want. The menu is amazing plus it's a winery and brewery. If you have the option ask to be seated in Petula's area, she is amazing! The best service ever and if the blackberry cider is available and when she recommends it get it. Could not have been better will be back to the locks if no other reason than here while in the UP more than worth the drive.

This place has no right being as humble as they are. The food it great, the staff is refreshing, and the amazing local wine selection is going right to me head. You also get a great view of the locks with the picture windows. Dinner and a show when a massive ship comes through.

Therese Cleary

Very nice little place to eat. All kinds of different home made beer and wine. I had a squash soup with curry and ginger, really yummy. The veggie burger was ok, did not like the pretzel bun. Save some room for desert!

So happy to find Karl's Cuisine open and fantastically surprised by how wonderful everything was. Karl's Cuisine is a must!

Jeremiah Siuda

Great unique food. I imagine none of it is frozen and it's probably all made from scratch. The only suggestions I would have, would be to expand the Gluten-Free menu, especially crafting one around an Auto Immune Protocol. Also, in the winter, the dining room is far too cold with drafts in certain spots. I usually stop dining here when it gets really cold out. I'd put a second draft reducing entry way at the front, and maybe a centrally located gas burning fireplace.

Deb B

Great service. Food was awesome. They worked super hard to work with our food issues we have....gluten and dairy. Fantastic!

sandy Champion

Had a stout, the whitefish honey sandwich and bread pudding. All very tasty and my server was attentive to my needs throughout my meal. Sat at the window.

Jeremy Simms

I really wanted to give Karl's 5 stars, but then I received my entree. I started with their roasted brussel sprouts and they were incredible! The tartness of the balsamic reduction paired perfectly with the slightly charred sprouts. I loved it! The corn and sausage chowder was perfectly seasoned and tasted very fresh. I ordered the Greek salad with my entree, and it is a testament Tampa Bay for sure. The potato salad on top of thensalad needed a little salt and the salad could have used a touch more red wine vinegar. But those could just be my tastebuds as well. The mushroom risotto with beef tips was disappointing. The risotto was overcooked and the cook on the beef tips was uneven (some were perfect, some over cooked). I requested the feature be served with the red wine mushroom sauce the entree is normally served with imstead of the asiago cream sauce it was advertised with. Cheese sause on risotto just seemed like too much cheese. Still, I am very glad I chose to dine at Karl's tonight.

Gina Harman

Great food in an awesome place. Just to be a boat!!! The desserts are a must try. Freshest food around!!!!

Pierre Chammas

Delicious whitefish pleasant wait staff. Great home style restaurant with local staff and atmosphere.

Valerie Leishman

We were told this was a good place to eat by the locals. They were certainly on point. We had lunch and dinner and both were excellent. I was not a big fan of the wine, but overall i am confident in recommending Karl’s. We will return on our next visit.

James Rogers

Enjoyed lunch here during our travels in the UP. My daughter especially loved her "juicy " burger. Nice atmosphere, and personable service!

S Hanson

I love this place. Best comfort food ever. Wine selection is out of this world. And the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable in helping you select a wine that goes with your meal. Do yourself a favor and don't drive by this one. This one's a keeper.

Deliciousness in every area:) I enjoyed my lunch very much! Great service by Bro, she was very accommodating and our Brandy Pecan bread pudding was the best I ever had!

Jason Gould

Great service, wonderful food. When I asked a local where to go for a pasty they said "for sure Karl's" I was not disappointed!

Susan Britz

This was such a great stop! Ciders, crab cake panini, roasted brussel sprouts! Good variety. Will be back next time we're in town!

Just had a delicious lunch here. Elliotts chicken sandwich on herbed focaccia was so good I had to eat the whole thing and now I'm stuffed! BFs Rueben was top notch also, he was impressed with the thick cut of corned beef. Pickles with a kick were a nice addition for him too. The service was fast and friendly. Glad we are here a couple days, we will definetley be back.

Kathryn Frick

Delicious, exceptional homemade food!

Alex Lu

Great food! We had the beef pastie, which was seasoned perfectly, the whitefish chowder, which was equally delicious, and an amazing slice of Italian wedding cake. It was all wonderful and the service was great!

Ryan Shelton

We greatly enjoyed our dining experience at Karl’s Cuisine in Sault St Marie. A generous serving of their delightful Beer Braised Beef Stew and a delicious craft beer was the perfect tonic after a long day of driving. Well done!

Mike Van Haitsma

Sooo yummy! Great soup and sandwiches. Creative dinner specials. Local and fresh food made from scratch. Awesome service. Great atmosphere. House made wine and beer. Awesome!

Eric Rosset

The service here is very good and they try hard to make your visit great! The quality of food is fantastic. The view of the Soo Locks is perfect. Overall it is a pleasant experience, although I wish they were open on Sundays and Mondays. They have a great wine selection to compliment the many seafood options.

We had an excellent lunch on the patio yesterday. Service was great, didn't have to wait for a table at 12:30 pm, menu choices were quite varied - Whitefish sliders and mushroom soup for my hubby, Crab cake panini and peach sangria for me. I noticed potted herbs growing on the deck, assumed they use them in their food. It was a very relaxing lunch watching the ship in the locks and eating a delicious meal!

Enjoyed a beer and yummy chicken sandwich on the roof top deck. Good service, friendly bartenders and servers. Worth a stop!

Found it kinda mixed. No notes that ítems were missing off the menu. Limited beer choices. And some of the dishes were trying for experimental but were a little confused in flavor.

Linda Gruber

This place is awesome. I'm glad we decided to eat here on our first trip to the UP. The food and the beer are excellent. I recommend trying both the chicken and beef pasties, although I wish they both had had more meat in them. The Whitefish Pizza was the best thing we tried, though. It was fantastic.

Arris Sullivan

This place is amazing they use only organic ingredients, their food is decadent but not overbearing, and great customer service! Also recently renovated! Ask for the maple planked white fish and Italian wedding cake.

Carrie Cryderman

The food is so good that we ate there two nights in a row while vacationing. Took suggestions from our wait staff, thanks William

Visited Karl's last year on vacation and loved it. Came back this year and it was not so delightful. Waitress was Petula. We had to wait an unusually long time for our menu's, and could not get refills on our waters. My husband got a burger with bbq sauce, there was almost none on it, as well as he only received about a dozen French fries. Waitress never asked if our food was good. We waited and waited for the bill as well. Petula was not busy, she was very leisurly standing around, so there was no reason for such underwhelming service. Finally they are schiesters who added the tip amount to the taxes total, not the food total, so be mindful of that. I had the walleye skillet, and it was extremely delicious. The atmosphere is very pleasant, we sat on the deck upstairs.

Excellent view from the rooftop patio and a very kind and responsive wait staff. I loved the BlackBerry Cider and the Whitefish Flatbread was amazing!! However, our main courses were disappointing. The Chicken Pasty had a nice flakey crust but was dry and bland.. the gravy offered liquid but no added flavor. OMG the Whitefish special dish... was disgusting... it was literally some pieces of fish floating around on a snot like substance with a few cherry tomatoes and some. croutons. I knew there would be sauce, I never expected soup... I recommend the Flatbread and next time ... ????

Caroline Marvin

One of the only restaurants offering delicious and different vegetarian items! The cauliflower burger was amazing and the Brussels sprouts were too! The best part about this place was the impressive view of the Soo Locks! We sat outside and upstairs and watched two giant ships come through with an amazing view! We also enjoyed the wonderful waitstaff and felt they did a great job keeping it clean and masked!

Suzanne Belcher

Excellent food, service friendly and efficient, desserts to die for! No wine this year for dinner but in previous visits it was high quality. Definitely a restaurant to try... order the grilled cheese and cream of tomato soup for lunch!

Although a bit more expensive than the regional average, they make up for it with a delicious and interesting menu that tends to rotate, cozy ambient, and staff that is hospitable, friendly, and noticeably passionate about their food. Their beer selection is small but good, and I heard great praise for the local wine.

Mary Carroll

Awesome pumpkin soup on Thursdays. Very friendly wait staff everyday!! Nice view of the locks too!

Dan Wightman

Awesome location where you can watch freighters pass through the locks. Service was friendly and knowledgeable with good recommendations. Had a glass of the pale ale which was crisp and fresh. Boyne the pulled pork Stromboli special and pasty were delicious, good portions, and reasonably priced. Dining room and bathrooms were very clean. Highly recommended.

Nice roof top dining area. Friendly staff. Good craft beer. All down hill from here... Food was marginal at best. We both had the portabella mushroom burger, one with the regular fries it comes with and one with the "up-grade" to sweet potatoe wedges. The mushroom burger was way under cooked, the sweet potato wedges were served cold and limp, potato chips came in place of the regular fries, and the condiments did not arrive until well after the food was served. The waiter said "there was a mishap in the kitchen and the fries would be right out". It took awhile but they did arrive, unfortunately, very under cooked. Did not eat them. Quality of the food was overall very poor and the $30+ tab, well, just say it was a waste of money. Eat here again? Not a chance.

soooo sad that the portabella cap was made strictly vegan with no option to order the previously amazing, creamy version... normally amazing food, this falls short of the expectations created by previous visits.

The food and service at Karl’s is outstanding! Morgan was an excellent server and can’t wait to visit here again! I would recommend this place again and again!!

This response is 100% correct; The review was intended for the Lockview and I have no earthly reason why I was put under Karl's page. Probably my error, but regardless, they are completely correct and I couldn't apologize enough for it.

Did our research and since this was almost a five star restaurant with all great reviews we thought we would give it a try. I think everyone that wrote a five star review had a few too many drinks before they ate here. Our appetizer was the spinach artichoke dip. Pepper jack cheese was substituted in it making it the first spicy dip I've ever had. I tried something new and tried the crab cake panini. The coleslaw on it was slimy and disgusting and the crab cakes were probably taken out of a plastic bag because they were not crispy. They were rubbery. My husband had the stromboli. The bread was so hard it cut the roof of his mouth. Both dishes were very greasy! Certainly not worth the money we paid for this horrible food! Seems like this place is trying to be gourmet but using substandard products. Even Made the comment that Gordon Ramsey needs to do a takeover of this restaurant. On one good note, the service was great!

Karen Vocke

Quite the surprise in this town. My wife and I loved the wines, the atmosphere, and the beef pastie set a new standard for me (granted, out of 2).

The wait staff is great, really good wine by the glass or bottle, great BlackBerry Cider, fresh homemade meals, the Italian Cake for dessert was perfect, and in the location to local site seeing, and the unique building I can't see why one would not stop by for a drink, a small bite, a meal or dessert.

Carmela Jacobs

Wonderful place. Great View. My daughter and I had an awesome lunch and had the best pasty. Out waitress Mallory was so nice and we had very interesting conversations. I would highly recommend the food and service.

Underwhelmed. The spinach dip and the fries were good. Veggie burger not so much. The party was not good. I didn’t care to eat more than enough to tie me over. The rooftop view was prettt cool.

Great view, great food, great service! The chicken pasty was phenomenal, as well as the home-made Arnold Palmer. Bonus points for being environmentally friendly and composting! Highly recommend.

Natalie Yoviene

The food was good. My walleye was great. My friend's Pastie was tasty. And the coolest thing that will bring us back is watching a long ship come in to the Soux Lockes, sink, and move on through. That was awesome!

Cathy

This place is a gem in the Soo, despite the quirky location right next to the mini golf place. Really delicious food (lunch is my personal fav - their chicken salad is delicious) and friendly service. ALSO...they fill a very big gap in the Soo for good Gluten Free food - great gluten free options including breads and desserts. I always make a point to eat at Karl's when in town.

Amy Burchman

I thought the menu looked too fancy for my tastes, but was pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the meal was. Great Caesar salad, perfectly cooked steak, and the most amazing chocolate mousse cake. Absolutely great meal and service.

john doty

We did not have a good experience. We were served the wrong food, drinks and they dropped the desert tray at my feet with glass hitting my leg..then tried to charge us the wrong price..no apology from management or offer to reduce price for such a poor experience!! prices were high! I would not mind the prices if we would have had a good experience.

Gehard Torkelson

Excellent food, excellent view on roof, excellent and personable service.

Becky Doepker

From the outside I thought this place would be a dive. But after going in I realized it's completely opposite. So glad we walked in. Awesome food. Plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options.

Jeremy Gager

Food is fantastic. Had their ooey gooey blueberry lemon dessert and homemade coconut sorbet. Food made with love and care. Terrific service. Ask for Petula. She is a wonderful waitress and has great tips and info about the area. You can sit upstairs on the deck and enjoy the ships coming and going. Worth a trip of you are anywhere near the area.

Robin Pokornowski

Karl Cuisine food is awesome! Two thumbs up! Everything is whole made with love you can taste it in every bite! Our waitress was so sweet and gave us tips on where to visit throughout our stay in Saulte Ste. Marie. If your passing through I highly recommend you stop by Karl's for a bite to eat!

Shawn Lange

We just ate at Karl's for the first time during a vacation, and we're going back again tomorrow night. Nowhere else in town comes close to matching their quality, value, and especially gluten free options. We have three celiacs in our family so that's extremely important. Especially for such a small city, Karl's has an outstandingly wide gluten-free menu. They have excellent GF rolls for sandwiches, very fresh vegetables and fruits and good meats. We had four different items plus the GF flourless chocolate dessert and everything was very good at a reasonable price. Plus the service we received was excellent as well!
