Everything is so fresh and tasty. A must-stop on every trip to Nelson. They have a selection of homemade hot sauces of varying degrees of intensity that you need to try.

I really wanted to like this place, it is quaint with nice outdoor seating. The servers were not very friendly. The food was not real Mexican and questionable. You have to order, go outside, and pay attention for them to call your name. If you do not hear your name, check back inside. Be sure to try the various sauces, they do help the food.

Great little restaurant, they have mentioned that they can make their food gluten free for a celiac - however, I had some cross contamination at some point in the weekend when I was there and cannot confirm if it was this restaurant or not. If you do not need to be gluten free, it's a great place to pick up quick food. I would only say that I feel it just needs a few more spices for flavour in the food and it would be a 5 star!

The tacos we're delicious and they give you two shells and so much filling, it's basically two tacos for 4 bucks. The place is old and quirky, but the bathroom was clean, the staff were nice, and the food is yummy and super fast. Would recommend for a quick bite or grab and go.

We loved this place last year. And of course, we came back this year to eat some awesome tacos, but what a disappointment! Fish taco is tasteless with small soggy code inside. Other tacos were just ok, nothing great. I agree with some the below reviews that guacamole is now just a green blend without avocado taste. We won’t be back again till I see the owner taking action to bring food quality back.

Good. But not a 5 star. I had the pictured bowl. Which seemed small compared to other reviews and the burritos I saw. Service was indifferent And didn't tell me the plate had a hidden compartment where corn tortillas were. I paid a 15% tip at order time only to find out I had to get my own meal and clean my own table up. Sauce selection was great.

Simple, tasty food. Burritos, tacos, enchiladas quesadillas and salads. Small at the best of times, no indoor seating due to Covid pandemic. Busy enough to make the place feel a bit cramped while waiting after ordering. Many order by phone ahead of time which is a good idea. Tables outside are still somewhat cramped and busy, so I recommend take out. A person wouldn't have to go very far to find a nice place to eat. El Taco is one of the more popular value restaurants in Nelson.

If you're on a budget, maybe worth a consideration, but if you're seeking a flavourful meal - skip this one. Guacamole and chips was a joke - it didn't even resemble guacamole, more like some gross, runny, green dip. Burritos were bland and forgettable. Music inside is so loud it's hard to think let alone make a decision what to order, and btw been to Yelapa and their food actually has taste. And to add insult to injury they expect customers to sanitize tables with a spray and a dirty rag as they leave, ridiculous.

The food was fine, but absolutely awful customer service experience. This happened a few years ago, in the Before Times, but I figure the owner is likely the same. Here's the full story, you be the judge. I was in town for a few days and planning to have a small party. I don't live in the area and I'm not white, so I don't look like a typical Nelson local either, but I have extended family in the area. So I went in and placed a large take out order, about 20 burritos to go, to be picked up 24 hours later. I paid in advance, and as he rang me up, the guy at the counter said there would be an automatic gratuity added. I told him I thought that was strange because it was a take out order. He shrugged and said it was their policy. I asked if I could discuss it with someone, as an automatic gratuity for a takeout order seemed strange to me. He directed me to the owner who was just arriving in the parking lot. I explained my confusion about the automatic tip and the owner was openly contemptuous that I wouldn't want to pay this. He snorted and practically rolled his eyes and said, "Well, you know, these kids really don't get paid much. If you don't want to pay it, I can't force you, but come on...."...I wonder who isn't paying these kids enough...the owner, I suppose...? I didn't say this. But I was frustrated by the disrespect. I didn't want to go elsewhere because I'd already talked about the food we were going to have at the party with my guests. I went back and told them to ring through my order without the tip. The next day, I went in to pick up my order. The 20 burritos were sitting on the counter individually wrapped, not in a bag, and the service staff glared at me then totally ignored me. I couldn't carry 20 burritos without a bag so I stood around for a while waiting to ask someone for a bag as they all ignored me. Finally a waitress who had NOT been around the previous day saw what was happening and was clearly confused about why her colleagues were pretending I didn't exist. She was very nice and offered to get me a bag when she learned I was there for the takeout order. As I was walking out, one of the girls who had witnessed what happened the previous day said angrily: "you know, it was a lot of work to label those burritos for you." (They each had the flavour written on the outside wrapper in sharpie). Honestly I don't really hold this against the wait staff. I believe they got caught up in the rude and retaliatory attitude promoted by the owner. But this is the customer service dynamic at this place.

One of my favourite places to grab lunch or dinner. Hefty burritos with all sorts of fresh and delicious ingredients. Broad kids menu too. Casual, comfortable and friendly atmosphere with lots of seating indoors or out, and a popular kids play area. Our usuals are the chicken mole verde burrito and the dulce pulled pork burrito. You can tell they make it all in-house. Also nice is that they're licensed and you can enjoy a Nelson Brewing Co beer on the patio.

I must admit that this isn't for me, but having said that El Taco is incredibly popular with families, groups of friends and couples continuously flowing in and out and the place had a lively buzz to it. So although not to my tastes, El Taco certainly seems to one of the places that warrants a visit.

Phenomenal mexican place in Nelson. The atmosphere is unmatched, super friendly, and lots of locals to chat with. Adorable street side, covered patio, perfect stop before or after a ride. Their burritos are at the top of the local competition. 1.5 lbs of pure heaven, wraped in high quality dough. You leave here full, satisfied, and it doesnt break the bank. Highly affordable, especially for what you get. I cannot reccomend the turkey chorizo enough. Can choose how spicy you want it, and choose if you want hot sauce as a side. Taking a bite, had the same feeling as the first bite into a piece of pizza. Its so good, everytime. Ive been to El Taco a lot, and never regret it. If youre hungry, and want some good food. Call El Taco, and get a burrito, your stomac will be happy you did. Fantastic location too. Easy street side access, right off of Victoria. So you can get in, and get out, without having to brave the Nelson bottleneck.

Wasn't happy with the chicken or pork tacos, really soggy. Same with the chorizo and beef burritos, also avocado wasn't listed for the beef burritos, which im allergic to. Was excited as I'd heard good things, disappointed. Ended up going to the pizza place across the street.

One of the best quick cheap and delicious lunch spots in town. Hands down better eats any of the "Mexican" franchises- which aren't likely to be opening in Nelson anytime soon ever anyway. Yay local +&AND&+ I can even afford it sometimes!

Never will i eat here again. A beloved favourite of mine was the chicken taco salad.. but twice i have gotten SO SO extremely sick from it. the last time was last week, my co worker got the beef taco salad and was fine...but me on the other hand, AGAIN, food poisoning from the chicken. Not sure if it was left over chicken from the day before and wasn't stored correctly, or possibly not prepping correctly on counter tops not being cleaned, but that is it for me and El Taco. poison me once, shame on you, poison me twice... well.. we know the rest. Sep 19th 2020. Wanted to buy more food/drink after getting my burrito. Not one, but TWO employees looked at me directly in my face while I was waiting to be served. I was IGNORED both times. When i told the girl making burritos that i was upset with being ignored, she said "Oh Well." Also, their new guacamole SUCKS. Its watered down, runny, garbage. ????????????????????

El Taco is bad. So, so bad. Shredded beef had zero flavour. Mole chicken had no mole. Tortilla Soup was tomato soup. The tacos have more water than sauce. Guacamole was just... confusing. Just really not good food at all. I could have gone to Save On, bought a bag of tortilla chips and Old El Paso salsa, and had a more satisfying meal.

I was craving some Mexican food, and was disappointed with the tacos at this restaurant. The chicken ‘mole’ taco tasted like boiled chicken on tasteless beans and loaded with wet lettuce and tomatoes. It was not mole as most people understand, which is a chocolate-Chile sauce. To their credit, they offered a refund. If you have spice hunger for some Mexican, I suggest you won’t find it here.

The atmosphere is lovely and the service is causal. I would be a returning customer if it weren't for the fact that the chips and guac served here are comparable to the kind you would expect at an arena canteen. The guac is a bland puree that I can only suspect comes from a frozen bag. Not to mention that the chips were served cold and stale. The price is right but at the cost of authentic Mexican taste.

Cute cozy ambiance, though it’s really stuffy on a hot day. Patio space was nice, but the tables were sticky even after a good wipe down. Staff was friendly. Came here on a Tuesday evening. Had the Veggie Taco ($4) and Margarita ($8.5) with tamarind tequila and watermelon slush. Margarita was good and refreshing. Would want this on a hot day. Except for the sticky syrup rim they put around the cup. It slowly dripped down the sides from the heat, making it impossible to hold without getting red sticky syrup on my hands. Just get rid of the rim. Not worth it. Veggie Taco had no flavour. It was black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, and guac. Guacamole is just mushed, liquidy avocados. Couldn’t even taste the lime. Black beans tasted like it came from a can. Could have really done with some seasoning, lime and cilantro. Tastes like a white version of a taco.
