Some dishes were very tasty, although a little too salty for my taste (beef tartare, foccacia and mezaman). Other dishes were interesting, but would deserve to be reworked to be better balanced (delicata squash with too much walnut "grits", sea bream with cauliflower couscous which gave everything too "soft" in the mouth and therefore was missing. texture, etc.). Il nous amené le riz au 3e service après le lui avoir demandé. Bref, entre ses roulements de yeux incessants et le fait qu'il nous raconte 3x qu'il revient de voyage (son excuse pour son mauvais service), je suis vraiment mitigée à l'égard de ce restaurant.

I don’t understand the hype about this place. We had the ‘famous’ dumplings - I still prefer steamed versions, the ‘make your own spring rolls’, which barely came with enough ingredients to fill the rolls and miso eggplant. 3 of us then burped the dinner the entire night. It cost us 90$ with a drink each, which is exhorbitant for leaving hungry. Go to an authentic Chinese / Thai / Vietnamese resto and you’ll eat much better.

It was my first time dining there and it instantly became my favourite restaurant. I love it so much I almost want to keep it a secret from my friends. We had four dishes, 1 dessert, 2 glass of wine, 2 cocktails, and it was only slightly above 100! What a gem! Relaxed and quietly-chic, Denise felt like the restaurant equivalent of a good friend who happens to have impeccable taste: hip without being cold, and always up for a lovely evening. Highlights include the cabbage and gizzards salad (refreshing), and the beef wrapped in betel leaf (with this incredible pineapple fish sauce).

The food was delicious but the service was terrible. We were a group of 10 people here for my friend's birthday, which means we made up no less than half of the clientele that night (small place, late reservation). Our first question to our server was which wine he would pair with our dish, and instead of answering he went into a long story about how he was travelling for the past 2 months and only came back today and he whole menu had changed and he knew nothing about it and couldn't help us. He told us this story 3 times, basically, everytime we asked for any recommendation. I'm very sympathetic of waiters, but when I'm asked to pay 15$ for a tiny tapas plate, frankly, I don't care about your past travels and how you just started working again. We basically had to figure everything out on our own, which would've been stressful if this waiter hadn't waited 1 ENTIRE HOUR before FINALLY taking our FOOD orders. He never even wished our friend a happy birthday or made any effort to make this evening at all special for us. He just seemed bothered by the fact that we were asking him questions about the menu. It's a tiny place. If your only waiter has no idea what the menu is nor the wines, and can't serve the 20 people in the restaurant at 8 pm, then maybe you should review your staff. It's a shame though because the wines we ended up selecting were delicious and the food was beautifully prepared, but the service really turned me off from the whole place.

Il ne faut pas se cacher que l'endroit est assez petit donc la réservation s'est avérée utile. Pour l'anniversaire de mon épouse, nous avons partagé les dumplings, le poulet ainsi que le boeuf. Cette combinaire s'est avéré parfaite pour deux puisque le poulet était un plat plus petit. La sauce dans laquelle la viande trempait était tellement bonne que nous l'avons bu comme une soupe! Que dire du boeuf? La pièce de résistance, une oeuvre d'art qu'on se crée soi-même en trempant nous-même nos feuilles de riz pour confectionner des rouleaux de printemps. Le vin blanc suggéré fut une combinaison adéquate et la sélection plus que respectable!

My girlfriend and I made a reservation at Denise for Friday, May 3rd. We ordered all of the food on the menu, but did not order any wine or drinks. The food was very good, and probably the most authentic Chinese cuisine in Montreal. I highly recommend the eggplant with rice, as well as the dessert. The price range is affordable, however the portion were quite small, which makes it look like a high end restaurant. The ambiance is not high end as we were seating on small stools and using plastic chopsticks. Nothing of the setting suggests high end restaurant. The server was very polite and the service was quite fast. He offered us a free dessert for waiting at the beginning, which I thought was unnecessary, but appreciated nonetheless. To come back to the ambiance/atmosphere, it is a quite small restaurant that gets very noisy really quickly. It could use fine tuning in the decor department, but I guess you would go there first for their food. We would go back on a quiter night.

As for the food, some dishes were really good, I am thinking in particular of the beef tartare, the beet salad and the mezamen, an Asian dish of meat noodles, others a little less successful, like the delicata squash (which I love!) with a nut oatmeal. Unfortunately, the flavors were badly balanced: too many nuts that masked the taste of the squash which would have benefited from being a little more cooked. The fish over cauliflower rice dish was lacking in texture, everything was too soft, but the flavors were good. The foccacia was crisp and well salted, to take to pick up the sauces. Finally, the overall experience is very positive, I will definitely go back! (Original) Excellente ambiance due entre autres aux choix musicaux, service attentionné et sympathique, très bons vins! SEE EDIT *****Great food, the dumplings and clams were great appetizers. We had the beef wraps, which were kind of disappointing to be honest, but the second main the Udon noodles were amazing. The only thing i didnt like were the benches, really low and had no padding. Will be back again :) EDIT: they changed the chef and menu, food isnt as good as it used to be. The plates are smaller, and lack cohesion. Its too bad because we used to go there every week or so... we left hungry and the bill was the same price as before. Changing chefs and menu wasnt a good idea :(

Don't know what happened to this place... when they opened it filled a gap in the neighbourhood, Park Ex has no other places that offered fancy coffees and delicious lunch (specifically the bahn mi's). But slowly they started taking away everything that made it great. Starting with no more morning hours, no more breakfast, then they changed the bahn mi and no longer had the option for a marinated egg, then they swapped the bread for this weird dry, round bun -then, they were closed every time I tried to go and now they only seem to do evenings for upscale clientele who are trying to show their friends that they're still hip. It's a shame because had I written this a year ago it would have actually been a 5 star review, the food was always great but I took away 3 stars for the reasons listed above (and because the owner isn't very friendly (the rest of the staff is though)).

Very cool ambiance and set up. The food tasted fresh, light and full of flavor. We ordered the cucumber salad and miso coleslaw as our appetizers - both were very refreshing and the coleslaw had a nice lemongrass flavor. For our mains, we ordered the Bun Bo Hue soup which was a generous portion and great for a cold winter day. For dessert, we ordered the pandan leaf tapioca which was delicious and light. Overall the meal was tasty and filling without leaving you feeling like you overate. Prices were also very reasonable.

So i update my review, I literally can't get enough of this food the staff is so friendly the food is exceptional yet so simple. I work just beside them and I got often for lunch. I have dreams about the food. I think this is my favorite restaurant. Everything from the staff to the actual dining room is awesome! Denise definitely dares to challenge our understanding of Vietnamese food by enlarging its scope whitin the context of Montréal’s food scene. Other restaurants are doing so, but few. The decor is fun. It’s chic, but not pretentious. There something unpolished about it. Like, you would turn around to find Anthony Bourbain eating and mumble with his mouth full something about being in his happy place Service is friendly and casual. Cocktails are goooooood. Like I said, the menu is fun. The Bò lá lôt is great. I could eat it endlessly. The fish sauce mixed with pineapple is a freat dip for it. The tapioca was the perfect desert. Not too heavy, and leaves you with a great aftertaste that allows your mind to stay in the restaurant while you go back home in this awful cold.
