Pretty disappointed with the flavours and quality of the sushi, especially for the wait time. We had a reservation but spent two hours there just to be served everything we ordered, which were only 4 dishes. We were excited for the BBQ salmon skin roll, which was cooked over an open flame but completely hidden by all the rice and veggies. The fish was not the shining star whatsoever. The chef was a very friendly man and the server had incredible hospitality, always topping off our tea, but we couldn't ignore how plain the sushi was. Definitely not worth the time spent there. The chef was also very frugal with the spicy sauce on our sushi, which was advertised as this really delicious sauce. There are no other sushi places in town and this one is adequate at best. The other reviews that speak highly of this place and claim it's the best sushi in the world or around is not true, unless their palettes with sushi are inexperienced. There is far better sushi in Alberta.

Is it Michelin Star Quality....no Is it edomae style omakase....no But is it pretty good sushi considering your in a land locked resort 3 hours away from anything that you can call a "'big city"....hell yes! Oka sushi exceeded our expectations in many ways. His fish quality is good, his portion sizes are generous and his pricing is more than reasonable.... especially considering if it's located inside a resort hotel. I especially like his Albacore Tuna Toro (no it's not as good as O-toro or Chu-toro from a blue fin) it's very fatty and full of flavor. His Amaebi and Hotate were both super fresh and very sweet. His chopped scallop Nigiri is great as he cuts up full scallops on front of you and mixes it with Japanese mayo and tobiko, rather than premade stuff.

Have been here 3 times now. Some of the best sushi I have ever had including times Japan. Very authentic.

(Translated) It was the same as sushi sold at a mart. The rice was rice cake and a little fish, whether it was roll or sushi. Serving is slower than expected. Light (Original) 마트에서 파는 초밥수준이었습니다. 밥은 떡져있고 롤이든 초밥이든 생선은 조금 올려져 있었습니다. 서빙 상상이상으로 느립니다. 비추

Mr. Oka is the hidden gem in the Jasper Park Lodge. His food is outstanding. The prices are very reasonable and he is always a kind soul to talk to. He has been doing take out due to COVID19, so I miss having a glass of Sake with him. The restaurant is very small and cozy and I can't wait to visit again.

Oka at the Fairmont JPL is now open for takeaway from 3-9pm. Would be nice if they opened a bit earlier so it could be a light lunch option. Very limited menu of rolls only for now but what was available was decent quality, though I found the rice a bit too sticky for my liking. Otherwise the rolls were tasty.

Who would have thought Jasper Alberta would have one of the best sushi restaurants in Canada? This place is the real deal, an authentic sushi experience. The sushi is some of the freshest and most delicious I have had. Limited seating so make a reservation if you can.

Jeremy Daniel

Fantastic sushi, if you like sushi, and you have time. This is the place to go. Oka is amazing a true master of his craft. 100% will be back again!

Loved it. One sushi chef in front of you. Makes each piece and then serves it to you. Very few seats so make sure you reserve. Super fresh and tasty. Even is you hate eel, if he has it, you MUST try it. I have tried eel many times and always hated it. My friend said this was different. He was right. Super good.

Sorry, but I really don't understand how this place had 5 star ratings. I've had Japanese food all over the world and the freshness and presentation is average at best. I do like that the restaurant only has 12 seats and the friendly service so I'll bump up the rating to 3 stars.

This place is fine, but it's 100 percent hype. The sushi is really not that good. I come from Vancouver and Calgary and the sushi at any place in these cities is better. The rolls here were poorly formed and just weren't very good. It was actually amazing to see how amateur like the rolls looked. Just really rough. Kinda sloppy. But. I won't say this place is bad at all. It isn't bad. It's probably amazing for people who don't eat sushi ever or have never had sushi. But. It will go down as the biggest disappointment I've had at a restaurant I think. High expectations. Very average in reality.

If you are lucky enough to try Mr Oka's sushi you will truly appreciate a masters work. Take your time and enjoy the experience. It is a very small restaurant that only seats 10 people. At the time there was no take out and no wait lists. We were lucky to squeeze 2 of us in to enjoy some fresh sushi. The Toro (tuna belly, not bluefin) was amazing. Considering getting fresh fish in would be very hard, you do have to appreciate this is as good as it gets. Thank you for the experience.

Best sushi I've ever had in my life. Love Oka.

Sushi was made fresh and was very delicious. The staff were friendly and the prices are very fair for the area! Wish we had ordered sooner during our stay at the Lodge!

This is the best Sushi place in Alberta. Fresh, tasty. The place is so clean. His wife cleans from 8 till 2. She cleans every surface, every day. He's amazing to. Love this place so much. Not the best in the world, but jasper isn't by the ocean. It's great for where it is. Don't listen to the haters.

Incredible find. Didn't know what to expect from a hotel sushi joint, but this place completely surprised me. I expectee it to be decent, but it was exceptional. They put so much care into their craft, including how they made the sushi rice (and it's rare to find that in Canadian sushi places). The fish was fresh and the spices used were delicious. Melt in your mouth good. I've been to Tsukiji in Tokyo a few times and these rolls are right up there with the best I've had. Well done Oka, this is an absolute pleasure and I will be back. If you're staying at the JPL or even just have a hankering for sushi in Jasper, this is a can't miss.

(Translated) If you want to eat sushi in Jasper, there are not many choices. The ingredients are not bad but the rice is sick. (Original) 재스퍼에서 스시를 먹고 싶다면 선택지는 많지 않다. 재료는 나쁘지 않으나 밥이 질고 떡져 있음

This is a very delayed review of Oka sushi. We visited Oka early last year when we were in Jasper celebrating our anniversary. Seeing the high rating and the rave reviews of Oka Sushi, I thought that I had found a hidden gem of a place. We grew up with sushi in Vancouver but have been living in Alberta the last few years and so our expectations were somewhere in between. We made a reservation months in advance and were happy that they had a spot left for the night that we wanted, as it seems reservations are hard to come by. Once seated at the restaurant, the experience soon began plummeting like a never-ending one directional rollercoaster. Oka is a small restaurant. Aside from us, there was only one other group of about 5 people sitting at the bar seats. We ordered about half the menu items (it was a small menu) quite promptly after sitting down, and our first dish came out after about half an hour of waiting. At this point, we were starving, and quickly went to town on the California roll. Now normally, I would never consider ordering a California roll, because let’s face it, it’s not authentic Japanese sushi. However in this case, the Cali roll was overpriced enough that I had believed it might be real Dungeness crab. I was wrong, it wasn’t. It was imitation crab. But whatever, no one ever made a bad California roll. Except this day... What really threw me off and sealed the deal with Oka sushi was not the price nor the wait. It was the horrid quality of the rice. I would have otherwise been willing to wait for all our other dishes to come out, and given them another chance. Oka’s menu consists mainly of rolls or nigiri, where the sushi rice can make or break the sushi as much as the quality of the fish. The rice in the California roll we got was undercooked and mushy. I glanced over and saw the large rice cooker and knew at once that even if the fish is of the highest quality, all of our remaining dishes would have the same sushi rice. That is absolutely unacceptable for us, especially after waiting for so long and having somewhat reasonable expectations for a well made meal given that it was our anniversary, given Oka sushi’s high ratings, and given all the fantastic reviews. This may have been an off night for Oka sushi, and I felt so bad given Oka’s age that I didn’t post a review until now. However I think that consistency is important for a sushi restaurant, and the night of our visit it was disappointing. This was the first ever Japanese restaurant where I paid the bill after the first dish, canceled the rest of the orders, and walked out. I’ve never done that in my life, I felt terrible, but I couldn’t afford to waste any more of my time on waiting around to be more disappointed in a meal.

Can't wait to go back on my next trip to Jasper. Very good atmosphere and the food was excellent.

Sophie

Great food and an even better experience. You can enjoy your food as you watch Oka make the sushi in front of you. Try making a reservation as there are only 11 spots. It is located in the lower levels of the fairmont hotel.

Julia SG

Had to line up a bit before they opened at 4pm to ensure we would get to place an order that night. Very fresh fish and rice. Enjoyed the spicy tuna rolls. However, rolls were smaller than expected and tuna roll and salmon roll lacked flavour. All of the rolls came packed in a small styrofoam container- not a very appealing presentation.

Bo Lee

Very disappointing. If you ever have experienced good Japanese (or sushi) restaurants before, this place shouldn’t be your option.

J Roos

Thanks for having takeout sushi at JPL. Fresh and delicious. We had the spicy tuna, mini oka and the Jasper roll.
