If I could I'd give this place negative stars, I would!
Let me preface that I shop at other Metro Liquors, which are fine.
But when it comes to this one, my blood boils.
I came in here on Halloween night, forgot my ID at home so my wife ended up paying. The clerk gave us terrible attitude when it comes to ID, basically telling me to wait outside like a dog, and REFUSING service to my wife because I gave her my wallet... So we left and took our business elsewhere.
I decided to give it another shot on March 22nd, when I bought a bottle of Kraken rum (amazing stuff) I was having a wonderful day until I ran into yet another grumpy, impolite and frankly RUDE clerk lady.
Who ID'd my wife and proceeded to ID me as well. This time I (as a foreigner) came with my passport and work permit/visa (WHICH is recognized by ICBC as secondary ID) I later confirmed with the ministry of justice that secondary ID must have a name and a signature/picture.
So I was in the wrong here, but what if I did not have a credit card? Or a student ID? The passport is universal and works across EVERY single liquor store I've been to across town. (Because frankly who would go through the trouble of falsifying an ENTIRE passport for a bottle of freakin' rum?!)
It's nice to be thorough, I wouldn't want them to sell liquor to minors either. However when I have my wife with me, presenting both primary and secondary ID and I took the trouble to bring my PASSPORT. Making a fuss about secondary ID just seems like terrible customer service and borderline prejudice against foreign tourists.
In fact the lady was so rude, after I tried explaining to her that ICBC considers a visa as secondary ID, she threatened to refuse sale in a very RUDE manner. I was in a rush and luckily had a credit card on me.
HOWEVER, I must say this is the LAST time Metro Liquor will see a penny from me. This place RUINED my day and my mood. Every other liquor store in town NEVER gives me problems, but these guys would probably give you a ticket for jaywalking and taser you while they are at it.
So if you're a foreigner and hate prejudice and discrimination I suggest you go to ANY other liquor store in town.
