My husband and I were given a bottle of River Myst's Black Tonip... but let me first start out by saying that we love wine. Especially dry reds. We're both from well known wine regions, I have an uncle who's a sommelier and I've worked for wineries in the past, so we know wine pretty well. Not to say we're snobs by any means (we don't discriminate!), but we know what we're doing when it comes to wine tasting. That being said, Black Tonip may be the worst wine we've ever had. I'm pretty familiar w/ the small, novice winery operations that are common in the region. We've lived up here for yrs and we really try not to be too critical. Wine making is hard! But it wasn't just that this wine wasn't our "style" (on paper, it's definitely our style: dry red). This wine actually tasted and looked watered down. It was like they added water to a medium body, dry red. I thought maybe it was just me, but my husband said the same. Then we checked the bottle and the ABV % almost seems to validate that. A typical dry red is usually between 12-14% ABV, this one is 11%. It also has almost nonexistent legs (the wine that clings to the side of the glass after tilting to one side). I'm all for a small local business doing their best, but don't desecrate the art of wine making to make a few extra bucks. Work hard to make a good product that you can be proud of! Not just something to pay the bills. Two stars instead of one because we haven't tried all of their wines or visited their facility, but even two seems a little generous for an unpalatable wine.
