I wanted to rent a studio in one of this company's apartment houses and the ad on their web site suggested that in case of long-term tenancy the price is negotiable. I was first accepted by Li-Car's administration and visited the building where the studio was located. The next day I called the head office with the intent to discuss the price with one of their top the managers (Lita) as I planned long-term tenancy (felt entitled negotiating the rental fee – as the ad hinted) but she was busy so I left a message but did not get a return call and eventually ended up walking to the company’s headquarter in Fort St. John a few hours later. This manager (Lita, although never introduced herself) walked out of her office and the first thing she said was "no reduction" in front of other employees without even asking for the reason of my visit or inviting me into her office to discuss this in a professional and friendly manner which is commonly expected from a reputable service provider. My only apprehension was that in such case why do they have the deceiving memo on their web site hinting price reduction for those planning long-term tenancy. She seemingly did not remember that and thought that the offer was only for 2-bed units (which, in reality, was not the case). I felt the rest of the conversation (2-3 minutes the most – in front of the company’s employees) was very unpleasant not because of my failure to get into a discussion of what the ad hinted, but because of the attitude of the company’s top manager toward a potential tenant. A small victory on that day is that the ominous sentence in their ad got removed by my suggestion. I went home and eventually decided to report this incident to BBB. When Li-Car management learned this a few days later (I guess they got notified by BBB), they changed their mind and with no explanation other than my unfavorable review they cancelled my appointment scheduled with the building manager to sign the lease agreement and having me to pay the deposit. In my mind, I did not do anything wrong just wanted to talk about something encouraged by the language of their ad and when I felt I was unprofessionally treated I simply reported the incident. It is obvious that my rejection was an instrument of retaliation because of my report. I am not very familiar with renting companies in Fort St. John and cannot generalize from this experience, but costumers should never be treated like this by a firm which is supposed to provide service.
