Super place with amazing staff. When I had to deal with the loss of my cat the staff were super understanding and didn't leave me sobbing in the waiting area. They quickly moved me to a private room to say my goodbyes and let me use a separate entrance to leave. It was so kind I've brought my other animals for care. Excellent vets willing to go the extra mile so I could save my cat. Took wonderful care and very non judgmental. Costs are really reasonable. Good vet care is just plain pricey but great staff that honestly care about you and your pet are priceless.

My dog decided that he could take on a skunk this morning and found out fairly quickly that it wasn’t a good idea. I brought my 150 pound dog (who can be nasty at times) to VCA to help get rid of the skunk smell. If there is one think my dog does not like it’s baths. I have no idea how they would of been able to give him 3-4 treatments with blow drying. I was totally surprised when I picked him up that there is almost no skunk smell left! Thank you VCA staff for a job well done!

Can't get over the experience I had with my 12 week old puppy at this hospital. At this time pet-parents are not allowed to go in for Covid reasons; the nurse took him in, and he went happily inside. The doctor (I don't want to mention the name, maybe I should...) later called me in the car where we were waiting, to tell me that one of the vaccinations could not be done properly as the puppy was not "civil" and moved, so some drops came out. I did not know what to say as I am a first time pet-mom. Later every pet owner I talked to was surprised that how could a vet not handle a 12 week old puppy. and to complain that he needs to be "civil" is beyond my understanding. I am very disappointed and worried.

Scam clinic, went for a single vaccine for my cat and its overpriced, im only asking for vaccine and deworm (nothing else) and the vet recommends so much things that i dont even need. Got charged for 237 for unneccesary exams. I recommend Simcoe animal veterinary in oshawa is way way better, charged me only 114 for vaccine and deworm for my first visit. This clinic wanted me to do another visit for booster for vaccine to work ???? Dont recommend at all. Unhappy customer greedy.

The only improvement would would be to shorten the wait time when calling in. I'm routinely placed on hold for at least 3-5 minutes anytime I call.

Recently brought my cat in for the first time after needing to take him to the emergency hospital down the street and was advised a vet for followup. The staff at Birchmount and the Dr looking after my little guy were wonderful. Very informative and very willing to accommodate for urgent needs that came up overnight. Start to finish a pleasant experience and would definitely recommend VCA Birchmount to new (and old) pet owners.

Since walking in the first day, everyone on staff has been so friendly and kind. They are always extremely helpful and always go the extra mile. I love that they always follow up with each appointment. We live out in Ajax and find it worth it to make the drive over because the care they give us and our dog is amazing. My dog has a bit of anxiety and can be difficult to handle at times and they have been very friendly and understanding when working with her. Dr.Holland is amazing and I know our dog is in great hands at Birchmount. Highly recommended!

Although this clinic is very good, it has also become very pricey since they joined the VCA. ALL VCA affiliates are astronomical in price. I have 2 dogs and live them to death, but their pricing is almost double to veterinarian clinics not affiliated with VCA. Do your homework, befire going there!

We ordered dog food and were told it would be in on a Tuesday...after Tuesday arrived, we received no phone call or email telling us to come and pick it up, so a day later (wondering minds) and after we sent a few emails we were told there was an ordering issue and they would be getting it in on a later date...thanks for the heads up....when actually picking up my dogs food we had to wait FOREVER after texting and calling the numbers provided. While waiting in the car we watched many of the workers stretching, and chatting at the desk, while other cars waited outside. I understand it’s covid, but we are not impressed and will be taking our dog elsewhere.

This clinic has been part of my family for over 20 years. And thats exactly how they make me feel everytime I walk through the doors. Whether I'm there for an appointment or just for a simple weigh in, even if its just to say Hi.... There's always a warm welcome and friendly staff. There has been days I've had nowhere to go with my animals and VCA allowed me to stay there while I waited, they were quick to offer my dog water and see my cat was able to go to the washroom. When it came time to say goodbye to my bestfriend, the staff was accommodating, they let me choose which doctor and assistant were there with us, they took care of us through the whole process. And it wasn't just a case of bring him in and get the deed done, there was a " Goodbye Tour" where most of the staff came out front to say goodbye to my baby, just like a big family, they felt my pain too... There is no where else in the city I would take my animals, I trust the front staff and the doctors explicitly!!

They never pick up the phone, send you to voicemail to request a prescription refill, then don’t call back, don’t have the refill ready when you go, and give you the run-around. I have a senior dog with arthritis who has been waiting on her pain meds for over a week. Every time I go in person they say oh the vet is not available right now and we will have to check with the vet so come back in a few days. Why is the vet not available at an animal hospital? Ridiculous

Poor service :( No rationale for the service fee ( they charged 2 x sedation fees for grooming a cat, which was regularly groomed every 8 months with out sedation... ????????????may be they don't know what is the sedation amount for this cat, so gave sedation twice???? ????????) Vet is great and knowledgeable. Only think is they should be transparent and inform us before appointment that there will be a examination apart from the vaccine. We learned at the day of our vaccination there is examination and had to pay extra $$$ which not sure why ,even we have had our puppy examined 2 weeks before. Overall okay experience and all in 1 place where people enjoy taking their little ones

I've been going to this clinic for my beloved cat for years. They always treated her with the kindness and care that one hopes for in any doctor, human or animal. Every doctor and staff member I've interacted with is professional and compassionate. When I left my cat in their care for boarding when I was out of town, they treated her like royalty and kept detailed notes of all of her behaviours and eating habits for when I returned. Yesterday, I had to make the tough decision to put my girl to sleep, and they could not have been more caring, empathetic, and accommodating. They made sure I had plenty of time with her before and after the procedure and allowed time for me to grieve before I had to drive home. Today, I received a sympathy floral arrangement from the clinic with a lovely card. I could not more highly recommend Birchmount to take care of your beloved animal friends. Veterinary care is certainly not cheap, but their service and care make it worth every cent. As long as I live in Toronto and have pets, they will go to Birchmount.

My family and I could not be more grateful for the Birchmount clinic, and specifically to Dr Holland and his team. After my own vet rejected my dying dog and told us to go to the hospital I made the wrong turn and found myself at the Birchmount clinic. Without hesitation they took my dog and instantly hooked him up to machines and helped him breathe. After trying to help my dog Kobie, they suggested we go to the hospital next door. While Dr Holland called the hospital to tell them we were coming, one of his colleagues jumped in my car and under the instructions of Pilar - the technician, she helped my puppy breathe until we got there. She calmed me down while I drove and went over and beyond. Although my dog didn't live, I was so grateful for Dr Holland and his team for helping us get him to the hospital while still alive. I'm blessed to have had my dog in such good hands. If I knew about this clinic I would have treated Kobie there for the past couple of weeks regardless of whether he survived or not. Kobie was in the best hands in his final hours. I miss him deeply and I still cry for him everyday but I'll never forget what Dr Holland and his team of exceptional colleagues did for us. Thank you so much. And for anyone looking for a good clinic...this is as good as it will ever get. God bless.

I am writing about my experience a year later. I had gone to VCA a few times to get my dog groomed to see a specific groomer who dealt with anxious dogs. My dog had health issues as a puppy and therefore was not comfortable with strangers touching him. The groomer at the time was amazing and always did a great job. The last time I went to VCA I was told the groomer had retired and they hired a new person. I was weary of someone unfamiliar grooming my dog, but this new groomer assured me that she had years of experience and that she would be able to take good care of my dog. Unfortunately, that did not happen. I received a call within an hour later from her saying she was halfway finished the grooming when my dog stopped co-operating. At some point during the grooming, she cut off a mole on his face and was bleeding. She told me that she would be unable to finish the job unless they sedated him. I told her I did not want him sedated and that if she was unable to finish the job, I would take him home and do it myself. She kept speaking against taking him home as he was "already half done" and kept insisting that sedation was the only way to go. Through tears I told her I felt there was nothing else that could be done so I agreed. I was upset because the cost of sedation, grooming + vet inspection for sedation was not in my budget. When I came to pick up my dog, I was not met with any warmth or sympathy. The groomer did not come out to speak to me, nor was there any apology or compensation for the cut on his face. I hesitated writing a negative review because I just wanted to forget about this experience. However, I recently was able to find a new groomer at a different location who was completely capable in handling and grooming my dog. She was kind, understanding and professional. I am incredibly grateful I was able to find an experienced groomer who didn't need to sedate my dog. She gained his trust and my dog left her arms with tail wagging. I'm writing this review to encourage other dog owners that sedating an anxious or fearful dog is not the only solution. You just need to find an experienced groomer and unfortunately, VCA did not have one.

I thought they were good - did a big dog surgery for me that I couldn't afford and was told to make payments when I could. *Without calling or emailing me* they went to collections behind my back. You could have spoken to me to let me know or told me you weren't extending my payments anymore. Instead you sent me to collections and I had spoken with the office manager and was told "pay when you can". Unbelievable you lied to my face. I had been a long term customer but never again.

First time here and it will definately be our last. Saw their vet with 35+ plus years of experience, Dr. Barrett. He was aloof and constantly trying to sell us on things we did not need. He didn't seem to care very much or was interested in listening to anything we had to say about the history of our dog. Asked if we wanted to do a heartworm test on our rescue dog from Greece. When we said no, he said "well I guess that's fine because there is no heartworm in Greece". Why would you even suggest it then?! All they seem to care about is adding cost to your bill...AVOID THIS PLACE. There are much better clinics in the area.

We have had some good and some bad experiences here. Our cat has been prone to having swelling of his lips/gums, so much so that he once scratched at it until he had a lesion in his chin! The first doctor (male, don't remember his name unfortunately) we saw a few years ago was really frustrating and seemingly scam-ish, he ordered a bunch of tests that cost a lot, ultimately unable to come to any sort of reasonable conclusion. He even blamed us for causing his lesion because of brushing his teeth. We eventually sought a second opinion from another clinic (because he wanted us to do even more tests and then stopped returning our calls!!) and they prescribed antibiotics which fixed our cat up right away. His lesion was then healed naturally. Recently, we came back because he again had a similar issue, and got another vet. Dr. Mariampillai was prompt and accurate with recommending a teeth cleaning, she explained all details of the procedure clearly and appropriately. I think it makes so much more sense that our cat's lip would be swollen because of inflammation from plaque buildup in his teeth which affected his gums (thus why he was receptive to antibiotics previously) instead of a structural problem (i.e., damage from brushing teeth) as mentioned by the previous doctor. It was really refreshing to have a vet that seemed to understand concerns from the owner's side for once. She was really excellent in explaining the issues and solutions, allowing us to make an informed choice in our cat's treatment. Our cat's procedure went well, and in fact better than we anticipated, with prompt updates from the Dr. and great care from the nurses. Unfortunately we didn't have a great experience with the reception staff. First of all they hardly pick up the phone. While I understand they are busy during these times, even when calling to check in and we can clearly see them sitting at the desk not doing anything, they don't return our call. Also, when our cat returned from his cleaning he was limping in his hind legs, which from our perspective doesn't make sense as he had a teeth cleaning and not anything to do with his legs. We called the clinic twice and left messages to ask for a doctor to call us and tell us what to do or if we should come in, no one returned our call!! It's like they just wanted to take our money and then ghost us?! Lastly, we went to pick up some special diet food for our cat today and the receptionist Kayla was unhelpful and sullen (again). Previously she seemed uncaring when we came to pick up our cat, presenting us with the card machine right away, carrying our cat in his crate at an awkward angle, and sullenly retrieving the invoice for us after we had to ask for it. Today she couldn't locate the food tin we picked up only a few days ago, saying that they never came in the large size we said we had picked up before. She said they only had small sizes. Lo and behold, there were actually large cans there on the shelf.. In conclusion, quality of care here seems good depending on the vet and nurses that you receive. However, they are quick to ask for payment without providing an invoice (nurses and reception staff) which is not the most transparent, so be prepared to ask questions and be clear on what you are paying for as services are expensive. Lastly, reception staff behaviour is adequate at best, at times they must be extremely stressed and busy or perhaps are having a bad day most days, which is not the most pleasant for worried pet owners.

This vet has been a fixture in the community now for a decade close to the SE corner of Birchmount and Ellesmere. We took our last dog there for her care as well as their pet resort and we were impressed by their commitment and focus on the care of animals. Now that we have a new corgi puppy after a 7 year hiatus from having a dog, we have decided to still take our new family member to BHA even though we dont live in the area. Their standalone facility was custom made to vet care and their pet resort and glad that they continue to provide great services for our furry friends.

AWFUL!! I would rate 0 stars if I could. My dog came back with lacerations, sick, and extremely skinny to the point where he needs to see a real vet now! They have no idea how to take care of pets and should be shut down! No one even informed us of the lacerations on our dog. For the sake of your pets, DO NOT TAKE THEM HERE!!

I've been bringing my cat, Freya, here since we first got her in 2012 and we've yet to be disappointed in their services. All the staff are extremely nice, outgoing, and helpful when I have any questions. I'm usually brought into the examination room immediately after I sign in but wait times between getting in and seeing the vet do vary (5min to 15min). That said, I actually like waiting a bit since I can let Freya relax in the comfort of an open carrier or let her walk around in the examination room, which usually calms her nerves before any examinations. The room is always clean and has a nice blanket (with extra thick padding beneath it) for cats to sink their claws into as well as a calming scent wallplug. Usually these are enough to calm down Freya once she gets there and hopefully for anyone else who has cats that are terribly afraid of examinations. For people who aren't used to bringing in their cats to the vet, there's also some handy tips on the wall and information pamphlets in the room.

Everyone is friendly and professional but always seem to be rushing. Their COVID rules aren't very organized or convenient. When I booked my dog's appointment, I was not told that I could not come inside. As a pet owner, I would like to be there to comfort my pet and see what is being done. As anyone else, I don't trust strangers with my dog. You really should tell people ahead of time that they cannot come in. Or allow one person in with a mask to watch from a distance and be there to comfort their pet. When I arrived, that is when I saw that I had to wait in my car (they had signs on the window). So I called the number 3 times and no ones answered. I then texted the other number as it said too, and still nothing. Another call later and finally an answer. They then asked me a series of questions (like reason for my appointment AGAIN) and someone came out while I was talking to the receptionist on the phone. Now my dog doesn't like to feel pressure around his neck, nor does he like strangers basically tying him up. I asked the vet assistant to please just use my leash as it was already attached and he is more comfortable with it, she would not. All of that, fine whatever, it's okay. But I came for multiple reasons, and they seemed to not care. I had to continuously ask what was going on and "what about these bumps, what about this, etc". The vet came out about 3x with the same questions. He was only concerned about giving my dog his needles. All in all, this place is like every other vet. Friendly but probably just want your money and don't really listen to you.

I have wanted to write this review for a while. Several months ago I took my very old, FIV+ foster cat here on the fly one night after he I noticed he was panting very heavily. Sadly, I have had many negative experiences with 'emergency vets' in the past-- not only have some seem uninterested in seeing a non-client with a cat with already existing health issues, they also charged a fortune to do very little, and encouraged a great deal of unnecessary testing. My experience at Birchmount clinic was exactly the opposite. My cat was seen immediately, and thankfully the staff did not associate themselves with the common stigma associated with FIV+ cats. They were all genuinely kind to and affectionate toward my cat. He is usually nervous having been a stray, but was very comfortable with all of the vet techs as well as Dr. Holland. Dr. Holland was beyond amazing, not only was he very personable, he showed a genuine kindness and evident love for animals. He was also very forthcoming with his professional opinions - he went far beyond the call of duty when he sought out to other professionals with an x-ray he took of my cats lung before making a full diagnosis. He did this on his own time, and without charging me an extra fee, something I have never seen a veterinarian professional do in the past. I will certainly be back to see Mr. Holland whenever I need honest and compassionate advice in the future. I can't thank the staff at Birchmount Clinic enough for their professionalism and kindness.

Yesterday was Abby's first time at Birchmount. Abby is a 7 year old German shepherd/collie so gets excited but very nervous at the same time. Yesterday Abby was very nervous but because of the environment of the waiting room, she calmed down and was just sitting waiting to be called. We did have to wait about 30 minutes because they were backed up which is totally fine because that's normal when you have appointments for things. I wouldn't expect to walk right in for an appointment. This helped to allow her to calm down and have a little rest! What I loved about this vet was Abby was excellent. Dr. Barrett was so good with Abby, Abby allowed him to check her over plus give her all the needles she needed. Abby went to the back to get blood taken and her nails clipped and we just heard her whine for a few minutes. It was all over by the time we paid and if anyone knows Abby, she can be difficult and stubborn because of her nervousness temperament but not at Birchmount. Thanks!

Worse place ever. My dog was diagnosed with cancer at the Emerg at Toronto VEC. Their assessment was sent here as I had transferred my dog’s file to this location over 6mths. I even called them to get a follow up from his vet after the recent diagnosis. I was told he would call me back. Two weeks go by and no return phone call, yet they are sending me emails of what vaccine is due. My dog dies and I am getting an email of what vaccine is due, but don’t receive a return phone call to discuss a treatment plan regarding my dog having cancer? They do not care about the welfare of animals. They are ONLY concerned about how they can take your money without having to actually do their job, such as save the life or even try to save the life of your pet!!! Save your time and money, and secure the well-being of your pet by bringing him or her elsewhere. Your pet’s life literally depends on it.

I recently started attending this vet as I am new to the area. I brought my two dogs in for kennel cough vaccines and wellness checks on Friday March 15. I was advised to monitor my one dog’s breaths per minute due to her having congestive heart failure. After finding the number to be high, I phoned in the following day. I was told the doctor would call me Monday. No phone call. Then, the same dog had started coughing Saturday and her coughing increased. I went in to the vet Tuesday and told them. They advised me the doctor was sick Monday and would call me Wednesday. I phoned Wednesday morning in desperation as she had been coughing all night. I had to leave a message as no one answered the phone. The doctor finally phoned me back mid afternoon saying that my dog needed to come in for more tests and to call when I had a chance. Luckily, I had already made an appointment with a different, much more attentive vet! Turns out my dog has somehow gotten and infection. I wish I had acted faster on going elsewhere because it had festered for 5 days of me waiting for a phone call from Birchmount VCA. I will never return or recommend them to anyone I know.

If i could give this place no stars i would.. steer clear of VCA. They just take your money and don't care about the animals. I took my puppy there in July after being referred there by my dad and a few other friends of the family. Waited outside for our appointment for over an hour our appointment was at 10am.. I tried calling them multiple times and they didn't answer. Multiple cars/clients came after me and got seen before we did. Finally at 11 i went up to the door where they were taking the animals in and asked the vet tech what was going on. She said they were understaffed (mean while i was sitting there and saw 4 employees get dropped off and walk inside), she said we would be seen next. Another half n hour goes by and he still hasn't gotten taken in ( two other dogs got taken in and came out after she said we would be next. Finally he goes in for his second set of shots. The vet tech let me know that this would be his last set and he wouldn't need anymore until next year. I took him to another vet a month later. Found out that VCA didn't give him lyme vaccine and he needed boosters of other shots. NEVER will I recommend this place to anyone. They are a waste of money and don't care about their customers nor the pets.

If I could give negative starts I would. HORRIBLE PLACE, DO NOT GO HERE. Bunch of scammers they are. I went here 2 weeks ago to start the process of getting my cat a haircut. They required updated vaccinations and examinations from the vet as the pre haircut procedure policy. But yet NO ONE mentioned that my cat's hair is considered "short hair" when in fact, the vet actually said he has "long hair." I paid around $150 for that process, and then proceeded with scheduling the grooming. The day of the grooming they called me at work and said "oh, you're cats hair is too short for a cut so we can just wash and brush him instead" ABSOLUTELY NOT. The entire goal was to get a haircut because my cats sheds a lot in the summer and ALL STAFF MEMBER'S THAT ASSESSED MY CAT FAILED TO MENTION HE DOES NOT QUALIFY FOR A HAIRCUT. This place was a horrible experience and they just rip people off! WASTE OF MY TIME, MY MONEY, AND INCREASING STRESS ON MY CAT. I NEVER WILL RETURN. Hope this place goes out of business or gets slapped with a nice lawsuit in the near future.

My family and I have been going here for years and always brought every animal we owned here. I recently had 2 of my animals pass away and Birchmount Vet most especially the lovely receptionist/vet assistant Cassandra helped me and my family tremendously with the whole transition. This is the second time we boarded our cat there, and we were very happy with her care. We no longer have someone to care for her in our home when we are away, and I trust the staff at Birchmount. There is someone there 24 hours a day, plus it is a veterinary hospital, and our cat has early kidney disease, we need to feel that she is in good hands. There is a webcam to watch her in the front boarding room, and we like that too. We know that boarding is stressful for cats, and of course our cat would love to be at home, we want her to be safe, and know that her schedule is getting followed as close as possible, cats hate change. This place was amazing! My baby Franklin was hit by a car and needed emergency surgery to remove his leg. It was extremely traumatizing for him and me but the folks at Birchmount took incredible care of him, allowed me to visit on the weekend and did a great job in keeping Franklin as comfortable as possible. But I now have to price check to save ever dollar. As much as i really like the staff and Dr.s at the clinic. They are now owned by Mars (a Co. That must provide it's investers a dividend for their investment), their duty is now to Mars...that is ultimately and unfortunately going to cost you and me more money. Like I said, I really like the staff here, they are awesome...I will miss them.

Honestly I would not give a star if that was an option. I had an appointment booked last week originally at 4pm which they changed to 5:30pm. I get there for 5:30 and call to check in and was told "your appointment was for 4pm" I did not have the time or the energy to argue so my mother goes with the email which confirmed that the appointment was at 5:30 pm. They said "We are sorry, and gave us an appointment today for Dec 7th at 4pm. I get there at 4 pm and they said you do not have an appointment. Save yourself the time and the frustration, and take your hard earned money to people who value your time and money. Very unprofessional, did not pick up my number to talk, but when I called from my second cell they picked up lol. Either front desk is extremely incompetent, or this is how they are ran from the top down. Take a look at others frustration, with them being unprofessional. What a Joke.

I have been a client for many many years, my only complaint is that you cannot get through on their phone lines. They give you the option to leave a message, however they do not return the calls. I have spent 2 days leaving messages this time with no luck. My dog had a mass removed more than a week ago and sent for pathology to determine if it was malignant or not. Needless to say very stressful waiting for the results, how ever I cannot get a return phone call. They charge more than other clinics just to walk in the door, surely they can hire a receptionist.

Specifically booked an appointment at this place for after work on Sept 4th @5pm. Arrived at 5 only to be told that the appointment was at 12:30pm and that I've missed it and the doctor wasn't in. We wouldn't have booked an appointment at that time as my wife would be home with the kids and she wouldn't be able to take our dog in at that time. They didn't even care to rectify the problem and told me to book another appointment. Now my dog doesn't get his shots ????

I arranged to have my cat boarded. When I brought my cat in, they said their cameras were no longer working and could not view my cat as they advertised. Could no longer change my mind. After being away ,5 days my cat was in terrible shape when I went to pick up. He was so scared and upset. Wouldn't let anyone touch him. I had previously taken another of my cat's here and he too was very upset. This place gives me the creeps and I will never take a pet here again. People make sure you keep a close eye on things...cleanliness, your pet's mood, etc.Remember our little guys can't talk and it's you they count on to keep them safe!!

I am rer-rating my original post. I have been with this veterinary for a long time and overall the service has been excellent. There have been a few administrative issues but the care given to the animals is very good. My dog has had two surgeries and he's able to walk thanks to Dr. Barrett and his teams excellent work. My last rating was unfair.

We took our new addition (American Eskimo/German Sheppard/Blue Healer puppy) Bolt to them on Oct 2nd 2015 to get his first shots and deworming. From the minute we entered we were greeted by an amazing staff who actually wanted to get to know Bolt. They were super friendly with him and asked a lot of questions to get to know all three of us. The vet who examined him (clean bill of health - just saying) was very attentive to our needs, questions, and concerns as well as interacted with Bolt with patience and professionalism. I cant say enough how happy we were with our first interaction with this clinic and, so far, would recommend anyone and everyone to go see them for their own additions in their families!! Service is good they care about the animals but expensive. One thing I didn’t like at all was when they called and asked how my dog was doing and I said she hasn’t gotten better, they asked to come in for a fallow up on my dog and charged me again..... a follow up should be free special since you told me to come in to take a second look at my dog.

Dr. Peiman is a versatile character and he is really a well-experienced, caring, and dedicated vet. His prudent diagnostic or thorough treatment plan is amazing.
