I've read a lot of great reviews here but also some bad reviews. I'm not sure what people expect from a vet but vets are only human - like human doctors, they don't know everything nor can they help everything. With that being said, I've had some wonderful experiences with Dr. Butler and her team, especially Oliver!! Oliver is so great and patient with my 110 lbs dog. Dr. Butler herself is also always friendly, she stresses the importance of preventative care (brushing, bathing, etc). My dog of 2 has been with her from the start, since he was 9 weeks old. She has done surgery on him more than once, treated him for sickness and loves him almost as much as I do! She's a great vet, she definitely loves to talk and be social with the owner, too. She makes sure you always know what is going on and outlines the course of action necessary for whatever ailment your animal has. She makes bringing my dog in easy every time. I have emailed her a few times with some concerns I'm having with my dog, and each time she replies and offers me her advice and thoughts. In regards to high bills, get pet insurance. Your pet is your family and deserves to be covered as such. Vets have bills too, they need to analyze spending and profit and prices reflect the work you're getting. Pet insurance has singlehandedly saved us thousands on our dogs surgeries and visits. Dr. Butler recommended pet insurance right off the bat and I have not been upset over bills/scared of prices since! At the end of the day, Dr. Butler is knowledgeable, understanding and great with animals. She's a stellar vet!

I brought my cat here a week early by accident. They still saw him and gave him his annual shots. Also found out my kitty has 2 fractured fangs that could eventually cause him kidney failure if left untreated. Also found out that it is not good to give too many Temptations treats to cats as it can cause urinary blockage. I didn’t know that. The staff were all super nice and the vet was very knowledgeable. The vaccines cost me less than what I had paid in Cornwall so that was nice too. Upon leaving, I received a little bag of dental cleaning food and a kitty toothbrush and toothpaste. I recommend them to anyone seeking a vet in Ottawa. The location is central and has lots of free parking. Cat friendly place.

My cat is terrified of going to the vet - Dr Butler (and staff) were very considerate towards my cat and had provided her with a pheremone saturated towel to calm her nerves, there was also a pheremone wall plug-in which was a really thoughtful touch. Dr Butler was very informative, very calm and kind and most importantly, did not give the impression she wanted you in and out. Dr. Butler and her team are incredibly hard working, compassionate and skilled professionals. Each time I bring my very anxious dog for a checkup, they go above and beyond to make sure he's as comfortable as he can be. Arrow just had a tooth extraction and the process was so well managed. He got in and out without seeing other dogs, which is a big stressor for him. He's not a young dog any more, but I had zero worries about the procedure because I know how careful Dr. Butler and her team are with each of their patients. I also didn't walk out with sticker shock, because the estimate was dead on, and very reasonable. I no longer live in Ottawa, but I couldn't imagine finding another veterinarian I trust as much as Dr. Butler. Vanier Animal Hospital is worth the drive!

Dr. Butler is extremely caring, she advocates on your pet's behalf so they have a healthy life and reduce their future vet needs. I brought my cat, Aura, in for a neuter and I was concerned about getting it done as quickly as possible since he was spraying. I appreciated that Dr. B was gracious about scheduling and let me combine my first visit with the procedure. Everyone at the clinic was very friendly and took great care of Aura. I highly recommend this clinic. I got tips for my cats and since the visit, have had zero issues and the spraying has stopped completely.

We took our puppy here and I was a little weary as my last vet’s office environment and staff was cold and unwelcoming. The initial call was professional and friendly and the appointment reminder call was appreciated. Everyone at VAH was so sweet and kind to our little Luna and she was showered with affection. This made the experience much easier on us humans as we know Luna won’t be scared of the vet’s office as she grows up. We received great advice and know we’re in good hands. Not only was the cat docile and accommodating during the exam because they have a cat only exam room full of pheromones, the doctor immediately identified feline asthma as the cause of a number of her ailments. I have recommended this clinic to a number of people and they have all been pleased.

We went there for the first time because our usual vet was currently out of appointments and we had a fantastic experience. Dr. Kelly was very good and professional in handling our puppies. The staff as well were very friendly and accommodating. Price was reasonable and they even gave us a dental kit for each of our pups on our first visit. Would definitely recommend!

I took my cat there after he starting acting strange called around to every and any vet and even the 24 hour animal hospital and told it was not an emergency and i finally called this clinic and was booked right away he was diagnosed with allergy and had parasites which started dying right away, I am very happy and thankful to the staff Oliver thought me how to properly clean my bug bug and DR. Dr Butler and her team are caring and very thorough. They squeezed us in earlier than planned for an appointment due to growing ear concerns. She handled our feline friend so well; Frankie wasn’t scared and didn’t feel the need to be defensive like how she felt with her last vet. The team was gentle and compassionate towards her, giving her lots of pets, and the pheromones in the room definitely helped keep her calm as well. Frankie was also allowed to be accompanied which eliminated her fear and allowed her to get a proper and full checkup. Dr. Butler answered any questions we had going above and beyond giving us really good information on how we can give Frank the best care. Overall, Frankie and I loved Dr.Butler and her team. Her health was prioritized and she was handled with love :)

Pros: -Victoria the lab assistant is super nice. -The operation (neuter) was done very well. Cons: -The exam amounted to the Vet trying to upsell me in 4 months of cat toothpaste and suggesting I brush my kittens teeth EVERY DAY (beginning before she even looked at my kitten's teeth. He has fine teeth.) She was relentless, and came off as trying some well worn sales pitch she doesn't believe in, or hysterical. It was weird. -I was never given any opportunity to talk about my cats health. There wasn't even the pretense of caring about my pet. Just rushed through as if I didn't just pay $150 for the Vets time. It felt rude and this was after my previous exam booking was cancelled. Maybe they didn't like me because I asked to just do the core vaccinations and such, to keep prices down during covid. I was given a "covid discount" of $3.40 on a $340 before tax operation. Seemed like more of an insult than a discount. Sorry if that's not the case, but I never asked for any discount nor was told about one. Given the rest of my experience it seemed like it was meant to offend me. Somewhat pricey and rude, I won't be going back.

Dr.Butler and her team are amazing. The staff are passionate about the well-being of the animals and make sure they do everything in their power to help every patient they have. Every time I have brought in my dog they have gone above and beyond to insure she gets the highest quality of care. During emergency’s they have managed to squeeze her in for appointments instead of turning us away to the emergency vet (that would cost twice as much.) I am grateful for this team and the passion and care that they give each patient. 10/10 would recommend.

Can't say enough about the level of care and service provided by Dr Butler, Oliver and Victoria. We now have a dog who looks and acts 4 years younger. We originally brought her in to have her nails clipped (other vet would not do it because she was too 'agitated') and teeth cleaning, but were also concerned about a couple of lumps on her side and leg area. Dr Butler said the teeth and gums were in rough shape and the masses could be removed at the same time. We were a bit concerned about anesthetic given the dogs age (16) but Dr Butler was very reassuring. We were given an estimate (that did not include possible additional costs) and when we came to get our dog after the surgery, the fee was actually less than the original estimate! Oliver was also kind enough to carry her out to the car. Recovery was quick and no complications, and our dog is now taking her regular walks again and is happy, pain-free and able to sit again. Thanks so much VAH!

Misdiagnosis that cost me $165 and potential health complications. Brought my cat in for what I thought was a URI and an ear infection. The vet assistants that saw me before my appointment were unprofessional and didn’t know how to properly handle a stressed cat. When the vet finally did come in she already had decided that my cat had allergies, claiming that most, if not all, cats in the Ottawa valley had seasonal allergies. She didn’t check my cat for other symptoms, rattled off a number of allergy symptoms my cat didn’t even have and hardly gave me a chance to get anything in edgewise. If she had actually listened to me I could have told her that these symptoms had a sudden onset and seemed to be acute not chronic (as with allergies). She sent me on my way with a recommendation for antihistamines, cat shampoo and sedatives for baths. Something didn’t feel right but I gave it ten days, as she recommended and saw no changes which made me anxious. So I looked for another clinic. Glebe pet hospital patiently checked her symptoms and gave her excellent care. Turns out she does have an ear infection and an URI just as I expected. Looking at the reviews for this clinic, I’m not alone in having my pet misdiagnosed with allergies by this vet. I’m upset that this misdiagnosis kept my cat in such discomfort for an extra two weeks and will certainly never recommend this place. As a student $165 is a considerable fee, and that is what this vet’s ignorance cost me.

The staff at Vanier are incredible. I brought my cat in who was coughing irregularly. Dr. Butler told me it was an allergic reaction to pollen season. She recommended cleaning his coat and some other suggestions and my cat has been much more comfortable since following her advice. She pointed out a tooth that was getting bad and gave me websites so that I could also refer back and see what was the issue myself.

I’m a first time cat owner with a 6 month old kitten. Because of Covid, most vets weren’t taking on new patients so it was a relief to get an appointment. I had lots of questions but the vet was obviously trying to rush our visit. She didn’t try to listen and I walked out realizing I’d need to go to another clinic. I was also out nearly $200 because they didn’t read the kittens medical history and gave him some shots twice.

I brought my 5 month old kitten in due to cough and congestion. The team member I initially spoke with was friendly and professional, and patiently helped me book an appointment around my work schedule. Dr. Butler was kind and thorough. She provided vaccinations, a dental care kit, allergy shampoo, deworming medication, and a careful examination from head to tail, including checking for ear mites. After listening to her cough and examining her with a stethoscope, she prescribed treatment for an upper respiratory infection and encouraged me to contact her with any updates. All of this was done for an extremely fair and affordable price. I would recommend this clinic to anyone, especially those with new pets.

First time taking my rescue cat to a vet; she started experiencing worrying symptoms of conjunctivitis. They were able to fit me in immediately and let me just say this place is amazing. All the staff were incredibly empathetic towards me (I couldn't stop crying from the stress and guilt of not taking her in sooner) and they continued to reassure me that I did the best thing by bringing her in and taking the situation seriously. Dr. Butler was amazing, she was so sweet to my baby and took her time explaining to me my cats condition as well as giving me the confidence and encouragement to be proactive in my cats care. It was a wake up call that was needed but there was no judgement what's so ever and Dr. Butler and her staff took their time with me, answered all my questions repeatedly and just gave me so much support to make sure my cat is at her healthiest and happiest. I’ve been to many vets over many different animals. This is by far the best care any of animals have ever received. She was calm cool collected. Taught me some great tricks on how to control my large jumpy puppy. At no point was my puppy scared. This is huge because she had shots, blood drown, and stuff up the nose. She was good go to the point before we left she wanted to show off her tricks to the staff. Thank you for taking time and not rushing. Keep up the great work. You all are amazing. I walked in as a not confident worry wart left feeling like a got this ????.

I'm a new Mum of a six month old male mini schnauzer. Dr. Kelly (and her lovely staff) have already shepherded me through initial vaccinations, neutering and preventative measures. When my pup had a bit of post operative bleeding (not related to the surgery, but rather he used his neck cone to scratch), Dr. Kelly immediately checked it out and then followed up with multiple after hour calls, mostly to assure me, the nervous Mum. I can't say enough good things about this clinic.

Our first visit to the Vanier Hospital this week couldn't have gone better. I'd taken my cat to the emergency vet a few days earlier and he still wasn't right after, so I desperately want to have him rechecked. They were able to take me on very short notice and the talked me through everything. Dr. Butler was able to quickly diagnose my cat's breathing issues as kitty asthma and he's now on the mend. They provided me with a ton of reading material to help me better understand how to help him going forward. Vanier Animal Hospital is a reliable and trustworthy vet clinic run by Dr. Butler, Oliver (RVT) and staff. Dr. Butler is extremely passionate about veterinary medicine and genuinely cares about your pet's health. She makes a sincere effort to "check in" on all of her sick patients, even days later. Her experience in preventative medicine is clear, as she takes the necessary time to explain proper pet care to new owners (to prevent future vet bills). Oliver and Dr. Butler work behind the scenes, in order to provide clients with the most cost effective treatment plans. In addition, Oliver ensures that all pets are cared for on surgery day and that they should always remain under supervision. (With warm blankets and lots of cuddles). First time around about two years ago, I came in with my kitten who was extremely sick and dehydrated. I was very nervous, and Dr. Butler barely even took a look at my kitten and told me she was a lost cause, and that if I really wanted to spend money, to go to the ER. I left to the ER, they gave her simply fluids and anti-biotics and felt much better not even a week later. If it weren’t for my girlfriend convincing me to go to the ER and see another vet my pre mature born kitten who simply needed fluids would have been dead due to her negligence and lack of ability to treat animals. Never wanting to go again, I had no choice as my cat now had caught ear mites and I wanted her to get treated ASAP. Hoping they would prove me wrong, I went to them again and had to tell them I was there for my cats ear mites about three times and not vaccines or because of “allergies” that she tried convincing me of constantly. I had to almost convince Dr. Butler to give her a mite test “just to be sure”, even though she was telling me it was allergies. Sure enough, they had found mite eggs in her ears. She seemed too surprised, and told me, “We all learn something new everyday” ... Had a bad experience. Be wary before your next visit. Not trying to be petty; literally for your animals sake. For reference, this is my cat who she claimed was a “lost cause” who is perfectly healthy despite her ear mite situation.

I brought my older cat here for his care, and he always comes home happy and relaxed, and absolutely loves both the vet and the staff here. I made the mistake of taking my younger kitten elsewhere due to an emergency, and really regretted it, but was able to switch to Dr Butler who did an amazing job. Vanier Animal Hospital was incredibly helpful and accommodating when my cat needed an emergency refill of his meds when my normal vet was closed due to flooding. They were able to work with my vet to fill his prescription when no other vet in the area got back to me. The staff were lovely to work with, they were communicative, quick and professional. 10/10.

My dog has PTSD when it comes to Vets. We had to switch to this location due to restrictions on travels from and to Gatineau (which is where his original Vet is at). We newly adopted our cat Mimi and this clinic assisted us with everything we needed to help her live her best life. Dr. Butler is very knowledgeable, thorough and has a high level of respect for her veterinary team who are also all very kind and excellent at their jobs. Our cat has received additional vaccinations, has a weight loss plan, and has been treated for her sudden carpet scooting. We feel equipped for managing any further symptoms and will be back for further care and for when she needs a tooth extraction in the future. Updates: -Our cat had her tooth extraction here. It went very well and we are glad we could trust this clinic with her -We are graduate students with part time jobs and consider the prices extremely fair. This vet team puts a lot of effort into educating families about preventive care and how it saves money + extends the lifespan of your pet -When we initially adopted our pet, the vet she was taken to the week before we got her said she had NO problems. This was completely incorrect - our pet was overweight and obviously needed a diet at minimum, never mind all her other issues. I am skeptical of the (few) reviews where a second opinion on a pet being "fine" are mentioned because of our experience...There are definitely vets in Ottawa who will let you pay them to say your cat is fine. Dr. Butler is not that type of vet! She and Victoria will make sure everything is being done for your pet to be healthy. Update 8.15.21: we have been continuing to see Dr. Butler a few times this spring/summer for our cat's allergies. Every time we take in Mimi, she has been extremely happy when she gets home due to no longer being uncomfortable. One week this summer, Mimi got very blocked up with allergies, to the point that she was requiring a lot of coaxing in order to eat. We were able to see Dr. Butler almost immediately to treat her. We knew that Dr. Butler had solved the problem because the second Mimi got home she ate a full meal and was acting herself again. We are completely committed to following the preventive care and advice that this clinic prescribes, especially when it is so obvious that it elevates the quality of life of our pet. Again, this clinic knows their stuff and we are so thankful! Dr. Butler and Victoria have been fantastic to communicate with and are stellar at their jobs. We are lucky to have found an amazing vet hospital that cares so much for animal wellbeing.

My pup had an eye infection and they made room for me to come in right away and get it checked out. My dog loves going there and the staff are so good with him.
