We moved into the area almost 10 years ago and have been clients ever since. The whole team - from the person who answers the phone, to the vet tech who does the initial exam, to the vet who sees our dogs - know us all by name and give lots of love and special care to our dogs. We leave each visit with a good understanding of the issue that brought us there in the first place and the steps we need to do to make it better. We can always get an appointment, call for a quick question, or swing in to pick up a treatment for our pets. From first puppy visits to the last senior dog visit, we've had positive experiences every time.

Newly moved (back) to Halifax after being away for 7 years. Have an 8 month old puppy and wasn't sure where to go for vet care. I asked colleagues and neighbours for recommendations, but there were no real 'stand out clinics'...(though several people DID mention Carnegy on Langbrae drive IF I didn't mind paying a bit more.) Honestly, I wasn't really sure where to go, and my pup needed to be spayed. SO- I contacted a handful of places nearby ( a few not so nearby, for comparison) and requested quotes. I figured, the way they handled the inquiry, who I spoke to, what the vets/techs/admins said, would all factor into my decision. Westwood hills didn't want to email details about my inquiry, but did email back me asking me to call the clinic. When I called, someone explained the base pricing and a very high level around the options for the procedure and then offered a free 'meet and greet' to bring my dog, meet the Vet Techs to discuss our care needs. We booked for the next day (I think) and my fiance took our fur-brat in and was really pleased with the experience. We were happy with the prices, the customer service and professionalism. So we booked our girl in for her first major vet experience. It's been 2 weeks now since my pup's spay, and so far, so good. The drop-off and pick-up were excellent. The Vet tech spent a lot of time with me on pickup explaining and answering all my after-care questions. They also proactively provided me with a number of optional medications ' just in case' which was a great comfort, and I ended up using a few of them, a few times. The vet called me around 10am immediately after her procedure to tell me that it had all gone really well and that she was resting in recovery. Someone also called me the very next day to ask how my dog was doing, which was lovely. The only (very slight) negative was when I called about 5 days later mildly concerned about some off behaviour and the person the phone wasn't terribly helpful/insightful. I mean, I get that maybe it was not a vet tech, or someone with less experience, AND to her credit, she put me on hold and asked someone for input on my inquiries...but it would have been nice to talk to someone who felt confident giving me more concrete advice. It sort of felt like a pointless call...but, I'm sure it's also difficult to give advice over the phone for something like this. Anyway- it all turned out well. I decided to wait and not book a follow-up appointment, and here we are, 14 days post surgery, fully healed and full of beans! Overall, great service! Good pricing compared to places more central to Halifax, great parking space (and easy to find! Very simple if your have a vehicle...not sure about public transit) - overall I would recommend this clinic and I feel confident I will have good care there in the future. :-)

Kayo is sensitive and a little fearful. Dr. Corum has a great manner with him and has earned his trust. Dr. MacDonald saw Kayo on a more urgent appointment because we thought he might have kennel cough.His assessment was very thorough and spot on. Fortunately, it was not kennel cough. Dr. MacCdonald has seen Kayo a couple of times and has always been wonderful too, both clinically and interpersonally.Kayo likes and trusts him too. As do my husband and I. We have been part of the Westwood family since 1997 when we got our first doberman Nikki and we met Dr. Don Rushton and Dr. Pam Malcolm. I was impressed with Don...he loved dobermans and had specialized in bloat condition with dobermans and basset hounds before coming to NS. He got right down on the floor with my little puppy on the first visit I knew we were going to be friends. Don always used to call me Nikki and the dog Brandie back then but after 20 years he remembered. He also joked that we added the extra wing on the clinic with our two dobermans who liked to beat each other up....probably true. We have had quality care for 6 dogs over the years, 2 dobermans and 4 great danes. Even though time passed and Dr. Malcolm passed and Don retired, we had excellent care from Dr. Alex Hare and Dr. Rob Doucette. We have always had compassionate care and end of life care with this group. Dr. Hare always gives me sound advice and Dr. Doucette gave us comfort care in trauma and end of life. We moved this past year and this week I drove 50 minutes to the clinic because I trust them. Thank you to Leslie, Charlene, Sarah and all the new faces as the clinic has grown.

Both you and your non human companion are made to feel like you are their priority. They share in your joy and your grief. We respect and trust the advice they provide and when they don't have the answer, they will go the extra mile to get it for you. While we live far away, we still make the trek once a year to ensure our newest family member gets the same wonderful care all his predecessors did. Before our Retriever passed away we decided to get a new puppy to keep him company and a little more active. Unfortunately he passed away a few days after his 12th birthday , two weeks before Duke, our Karelian Bear Dog arrived. We still live in the Arctic year round, but make Westwood Hills Veterinary Hospital the must visit place once a year for Duke's check up.

It was a small clinic, but even then the atmosphere was family oriented and I knew how much Dr. Malcolm and Dr. Rushton cared! Fast forward many years later and many dogs later, and I am still a dedicated customer. My pets and myself have had the best, most caring experiences with Dr. Hare, Dr. Corkum, Dr. Doucette and Dr. McDonald. The vet techs and office staff are also great - Leslie and Charlene - thanks for listening to my rants and getting any of my pets in there in a expedient manner when there was a problem! They are always available to answer questions and analyze all methods and explain all of those methods for helping my pets when needed; and they all know how much that has happened! Thanks guys! We went to Westwood Hills to get a second option and I will be staying there. We saw Dr. Hare, he was so fantastic with Chloe, and he seemed to have solved our issue in one visit. Not to mention two days later we received a follow up call to see how she was doing, which meant a lot to me. The office was so clean, normally my dog Chloe won't stand on the scale to be weighed but she was fine here I think it was less anxiety because it was so clean and less animal smells. Great office, and staff. So happy we are there now, highly recommend them.

"POCKETBOOK" FOCUS..more like it. If you enjoy a hostile, condescending environment with doors slamming and belittling service...this is your best choice. You are better off putting a vacuum cleaner in your pocket and sucking out all your money than patronizing “pocketbook focus” You will be farther ahead and you pet will thank you. Avoid at all cost...there a lot of pet care providers that will serve you better in the Tantallon area. Caring for your pet shouldn’t be a difficult a process with numerous visits for minor health issues.

Dear family of pet owners, My 8 year old Pomeranian mix, Teddy, who for all intents and purposes is adorable. This past weekend, our beloved, collapsed while walking. It seems that every veterinary clinic we contacted were unable to assist. After realizing that our own vet, was open we were temporarily relieved. They have treated cuts and bruises, looked out for their health and were such an invaluable empathetic source of comfort when it was time to say goodbye to our furry friends. Drs Corkum, MacDonald, and Doucette treated our pets like kings and queens. As did the vet techs, especially Jennifer. I would call the vet office to arrange a pick up for food or medicine and upon saying who was calling, they would ask about Chase and Zoe immediately, without being prompted. I cannot say enough good things about Westwood and its people. We continue to bring our beagles there today and will do so far into the future!

I took my 5 month old puppy there as she was showing discomfort and weakness in her back legs. She also had some swelling around her pelvic area. After the male vet Hmmm’d and haaaa’d and gave a speedy assessment he concluded it was maybe possible trauma (oh thank you, I didn’t know) gave some topical antibiotic cream (no skin abrasions or open wounds) and some anti-inflammatories(which were helpful). 2 days later the tech called to see how she was doing. I replied with she’s still uncomfortable but I’m out of pain medication for her, So they gave me more. Another week passes and puppy showing no signs of improvement so I decided to take her somewhere for a second opinion. Within seconds the vet recognized through his very BASIC HEALTH ASSESSMENT SKILLS that my sweet pup had a dislocated hip!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Talk about feeling awful. I must say, Dr. Hare who usually cares for her is a wonderful vet and the techs are amazing and knowledgeable. Otherwise, for the doctor standing in, absolutely not recommended.

I used to take my dog here all the time, it's close to where I live and it's very clean. However, on more then one occasion they have tried to charge me for things that my dog did not need. When I wanted to get my dog fixed they told me they had to do a blood scan that was going to cost almost $100 on top of the regular fees and when I said I didn't want it they told me my dog might die during the procedure. When I called three other Vet clinics they told me no such scan was needed. Westwood hills clinic was playing on my emotions as an owner to make money. I went back again to get his shots and they wanted to charge me $70 to have the doctor pick my dog up and put him down, calling it an exam before they would give him his shots. I will never again take my dog back to this place.

I was a brand new client when I called on a Friday evening about my cat's scratched eye. By 10:30 Saturday morning we were seen, had antibiotic eyedrops in hand and were on our way home. They called on Monday or Tuesday to check up on the kitty's recovery. A few weeks later, I remembered the insurance claim form needed to be completed by one of their staff. I walked in, my claim form was completed without question, and I was provided with the correct receipt with which to submit my claim without even asking. Great staff, bright office, convenient location, and I have to repeat, I got an appointment in less than 18 hours on a Saturday. We'll be coming back.

Dr. Alex Hare is a compassionate and genuine vet. The care he has offered to my pets has gone above and beyond. When I had to let my 18 year old cat go over the rainbow bridge, he was so nice and his understanding of my pain helped me let go. In addition, my dog Luna is very anxious when she goes to the vet and he always takes the time to put her at ease, he never rushes and gets down on her level to make her feel more comfortable. After 20 years you turned away a patient in distress, she needed your help and fast. The 2 young ladies that contacted you needed your help. There was no way she was making it to Dartmouth and they knew that, that’s why they called you for help. I can’t express enough how extremely disappointed I am with how my girls were treated. Although Abby didn’t spend a lot of time visiting the vet, (she was a healthy dog) she wasn’t just a dog off the street, she was your patient. A patient in extreme respiratory distress. Shame on you for saying no, for refusing to help a patient. Any why? Because you were short a doctor? Really- my daughter begged you to help her. Imagine how she felt watching the pet she grew up with suffer in pain :( Animals are just as important as people. They have the right for emergency medical treatment too. You had an obligation to help my poor Abby but you chose not too. You turned her away when she needed you the most. ***Thank goodness Tantallon Veterinary Hospital welcomed them without a second thought. Our beautiful Labra Doodle, 14 year old Abby passed away Wednesday June 30th. I will be forever grateful for the immediate care we received from the kind, caring staff at TANTALLON VETERINARY HOSPITAL, who met us for the first time 5 minutes later when we arrived in their parking lot. They only had 1 doctor on staff but still made time to help a family and their beautiful fur baby.**** Update: Follow up to your response. Thank you Tracy. I'm glad we had a chance to discuss things and thank you for confirming that the situation wasn't handled the way they should have been. I know we can't change the fact that Abby is gone but the moments leading up to her passing could have been much different. I have to say I'm very disappointed to hear that after you spoke with all staff on that day, not 1 person owned up to speaking with my daughter. I believe people make mistakes, and I believe this is a mistake to be learned from. What I can't believe is the dishonesty. Unfortunately that is something that I can't forgive.

Jiggs had a great first visit with Dr. Doucette. The Doc’s love of lab puppies was absolutely evident right from the start ???? The tech was excellent as well, they answered my questions and the experience was very positive for my pup. Kudos to the staff for the way they handle the covid protocols. Living in Westwood Hills, we thought it was a no-brainer to go with Westwood Hills Vet upon getting our new puppy. Fast forward four months later - for the third time we've been charged substantially more than the quoted amount for standard items. We now know this choice was a mistake. If a higher price was given upfront, we would gladly pay it, but the lack of transparency makes it a bit harder to swallow. When the receptionist saw my husband and I looking confused in regards to the bill, she asked if I had a question about it (after it was paid). I informed her that once again, the amount was much higher than was quoted. We were told that two extra teeth were pulled, and that was the reason for the charges. If we were contacted, we would have informed them that our puppy's litter were all a bit slower losing their teeth, and each of them still have teeth falling out. The two additional teeth were not a concern of ours. I was told the vet tech would explain the charges. From there we were met with defensiveness and hostility. The vet tech did say that we were over charged, but tried to justify it with the fact that other vets charge more for medications - and that other places she had worked charged more for these things. She consistently spoke to me in a condescending manner, berated me, and acted as though she wouldnt give my dog to me, as if I were refusing to pay the bill (which again, had already been paid). My husband and I were very uncomfortable being stuck in a room with this technician, and I lost my patience when we were not being able to leave with our dog. She then sent Dr. Hare into the room, who had the audacity to tell me that I owed his technician an apology. I cannot ever imagine saying that to one of my clients if one of my staff had made them to feel like a low life who was trying to rip off the business. I see a lot of great reviews, however it seems that my experience was much more in line with the negative, hostile environment others have experienced. To be fair, it could have been just the one technician. However, the vetrinarian's quick response to accuse me of treating his technician badly after my husband and I were made to feel very uncomfortable by her was the last straw for us. The immediate defensiveness over the bill with bizarre justifications certainly made things seem very suspicious, and our family will not be back.

I lied to about receiving a call back after my second visit. My dogs lens fell out of her eye and when I called back after 48 hours to see why the vet had not called I was threatened by the Secretary that they would call the SPCA on me for neglect. This was extremely unnecessary and cruel for a family grieving for their dogs condition. I expressed this weeks later after receiving proper care at the Sackville vet. Westwood probably prescribed the wrong meds thinking it was just glaucoma, I told him it was an infection but he said it was not. It turns out it was. She is now on antibiotics and recovering, we took her off what he prescribed despite him saying it would be a lifelong requirements. The manager basically called me a liar when I told her what happened.
