Staff is super friendly, knowledgable, and compassionate. They greet both my dogs with love, even the one that screams non-stop (sorry about that, we're working on it!). They are always patient and take the time to both listen and answer knowledgeably. I couldn't ask for more trustworthy people to care for my dogs. <3

Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic We had an incident where two dogs got into a brief altercation and the little one needed some immediate care. We called Dr Hughes Sunday night and he said he would be at his clinic in 15 minutes. Getting the dog inside, he gave her a good look over and explained everything thoroughly. The process involved a number of injections. One for relaxation, antibiotics and some local freezing. His first attempt was to try and correct the damage without having to use anesthesia. Unfortunately the little patient was not cooperating so the anesthesia was used. He told us to come back in an hour which we did. The issue was corrected and he gave us eye ointment and some pills to fight off any possibility infection. A follow up appointment was made to check the eye in a few days. During the entire process, Dr Hughes showed compassion and care for our pet. He engaged in some casual and related conversation to ease our anxiety. Thank you Dr. Hughes.

HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A LISCENCE. and it shows. if you enjoy this phone call at 3 AM- "your dog is dead. (click)" (true story) then go ahead and visit Dr Hughes. I personally recommend paying extra and going to the real vet. he couldn't even nueter my cat without slicing up his leg somehow. Notice how you don't see any credentials on display? because he doesn't have any. I don't know how this animal deathtrap is even still in business

consistently kind, competent care for my senior dachshunds. Dr. Hughes recently went out of his way to help out in an emergency, quite likely saving my little guy's life. And in the midst of it all, he took the time to be empathetic and clearly explain all of what was going on for Cranmer.

Hands down the best vet we've ever used. Informative, kind and caring vet and staff. They went above and beyond for us when our cat was ill and passed and our dog needed major surgery and had follow ups.

My dogs agree, this place is the cat's meow!

Dr. Hughs is not my regular vet, but he agreed to see my sweet darling pup while she was in distress. We ended up having to let her go and Dr. Hughs was very sympathetic and didn't rush the process at all even though it was a Sunday evening. Being from one of the remote communities it's hard to get regular treatment for our pets but we have been able to get them to our "usual" vet annually for check ups and shots. This encounter with Dr. Hughs, when i couldn't even reach my regular vet from Alberta on the phone, has made me decide that I will be switching all of my fur babies over to the Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic. Their customer service was outstanding and that means everything to me when it comes to my fur babies. I am incredibly thankful to their kindness and attention at one of the hardest moments.

The staff at the Yellowknife Vet Clinic are a pleasure to work with. They are very knowledgeable, compassionate and caring when it comes to the health of my pets. They go over-and-beyond when it comes to caring of them. Dr. Hughes and his team was able to save my cat when it had a plugged urinary tract (my fault as my cat was eating my new puppy's kibble) and he lived for several more wonderful years (until my tenant accidentally let him outside when we were on vacation, and he never came home). He was also able to care for my dog through some issues with his thyroid. Dr. Hughes and his team has always kept me up to date of the status of my pets, pre- and post-surgery, and is always available to go over the details of the health of my pets. The staff is very friendly and always provide great service with a smile. Reading through the other reviews, that some say that they were inconvenienced as they had to wait an extra few minutes for their appointment. I disagree with those statements, as I look at it where that Dr. Hughes puts the time and effort to ensure that your questions are answered and that your pet is cared for. He never tries to rush you out the door, so that he can get to the next patient like a revolving door. Dr. Hughes and his team ensures that you are comfortable before leaving the clinic. Thank you to the team at the Yellowknife Vet Clinic for your continued care and compassion of my pets.

A bet that really cares with a modern establishment

The staff are wonderful and generally quite helpful. They and the vets are knowledgeable. However, the vet I saw was extremely tight lipped. He didn't want to tell me anything about the dogs I'd brought in. I had to direct him to do a physical and, specifically, to examine a broken and black tooth. Then, to get his professional opinion on if said tooth was a problem was like pulling teeth in itself. Most importantly, however, was that the quote they give you on the phone does not include their "consultation" fee, in my case a difference of nearly $200. Bottom line, I respect the staff but don't trust the vet himself. Will be taking my dogs to a different vet instead of bringing them in to YK.

Dr. Hughs is wonderful! He helped my Nina when she broke her tooth and gave me a lot of information on how to better care for her! He loves animals, and also takes care of their humans.

I have a cat with chronic kidney disease. And I went to the vet after he had took a blood sample and urine test. I had also asked him to take a thyroid test in case she had hyperthyroidism. Have the results, I went to the vet after a couple of days because of my horrendous work schedule. Once I got there, he attempted to dismiss me. He had more important matters at hand because his friend was leaving town and he as I quote "didnt have time to talk to me" I expressed that he could take only a few moments out of his life schedule to speak to me about my cat who was dying from a disease that I (at this time) had no idea how to deal with. Continuing to dismiss me, he finally compromised to a couple of minutes which he made me wait 30 mins to an hour for him to return from him errand. And had I left the veterinarian clinic he had said that I could forget about the chat. Sitting and waiting for him in the clinic, he returned only to give me NO IMFORMATION AT ALL He quickly went over everything as if it meant nothing to this veterinarian, as though my dying cat meant nothing to him. He did not tell me what stage she was in, (that's very important to know for a cat with CKD) he did not say what symptoms I would need to watch for as she got worse. Did not advise any medication or prescribed me a SubQ fluids (which are CRITICAL for a cat with CKD to have because they cannot absorb liquids like a health cat can) nor did he tell me about ANY OF THE RESULTS from the tests!! no. He just told me to buy his products or figure it out myself. DO NOT GO TO THIS VET This veterinarian rather spend his time doing anything other than show respect to you or your animals. He is not a vet, he just wants your money. Do not go to the vet!!

Dr Hughes is the most compassionate man. He loves his job and it shows. He treats my cats like family. He is my favourite vet. The store is clean and staff are always kind.

I'm surprised at all these 5 star reviews, and I'll tell you why. I called this morning to get help for my Grandfather's dog she hasn't eaten or drank in three day and hasn't urenated in 3 days now she is howling in sever pain, I called and spoke to the vet who at first seemed nice but that changed fast. After exploring my options I found out that it could cost anywhere between $1000 to $3000 which is under standable not knowing what is wrong. Now there is no way we could afford that so I asked about euthanizeation, which I was told could be 1000 dollars for a medium dog. This is where things took a turn for the worst which is where my 1 star review comes in. As I sat there loading my rifle getting ready to break my Daughter and Grandfather's heart I got a call from the Veterinarian lecturing me on cost and care of a dog and I quote the Veterinarian saying, "if you car breaks down your not gonna call a mechanic and beg a mechanic". And that's when I hung up. How dare he do that to someone especially when the are dealing with a beloved family dog being so sick and in pain. I will never call this Veterinarian Hospotal ever again and I hope you think twice letting this Bully near you beloved pets.

The vet was 30 minutes late for our pre-scheduled appointment. Then literally spent less than 3 minutes with us administering my cat's shots. While he checked her eyes and teeth he did not weigh her or ask any questions about her behaviour or advise of how she would respond to the shots, whether any further shots would be required or information about the shot he was administering. Then he gives me the bill - $140 ($80+ of which was for his supposed "consultation"). When I called him out on it he said I was free to take my business elsewhere. I responded that I absolutely would and that if I treated client's that way I wouldn't have a job, he then got irate and raised his voice to me in front of my 1 year old daughter. MY ADVICE, AVOID THIS PLACE!

My dog was sick puking and having bloody stools all night. After going to the other animal hospital (thinking they would take us right away), they told us we can only be seen in the afternoon. I called Yellowknife Veterinary Clinic and after telling them our ordeal, they took us in right away. The receptionist Kristy was lovely and supportive. When I arrived, I was impressed to know that they have a separate entrance to their examination room, in case your pet might be contagious. Being a nurse, I really appreciate this detail to infection control which I have not seen in any vet clinic EVER! Dr.Hughes was lovely, very thorough, vet competent. He explained what my dog might be going through. Explained every treatment we had to take. I left thinking my dog is getting the right treatment. Thank you so much! Definitely recommend!!

Dr. Hughes as well as his collague (the pretty brown haired lady whose name i cannot remember, sorry) went above and beyond in their level of care and compassion for my little guy. He puts the health and well being of your pet first and foremost, every time. Saved my dogs life in an emergency and will forever be thankful.

Unprofessional, ineffective and in my opinion, boarderline negligent. Refused medication for a diagnosed health condition for my senior dog and then berated me for being unable to manage the condition. Without medicating the thyroid issue, I was told to walk him more and feed him less to get down his weight and manage the arthritis. At three appointments I pushed for thyroid medication, and three times was denied. After months of those methods not working, he prescribed more agressive pain medications and still refused treatment of the underlying condition. Within six months of this refusal to treat his medical issue my dog had to be put down, and he suffered needlessly. The euthinasia was over $650 ontop of thousands spent. That's my first issue. My second issue was the care of my youngest dog during the same time. My pitbull has chronic allergies and was put on a usually effective medication. After over a year of the medication she was still chronically itching and red. I was told that was the only effective option despite it being incredibly expensive and not working. No other options were given even when I asked. Her chronic dermatitis was left untreated and unmentioned to me during this year. I switched vets after this. My third issue. Today my now oldest dog needed emergency vet care. After time at the park he was suddenly lathargic, vomiting and weak in the hind legs. Concerned, I call my usual vet, and their emerg line went unanswered. I called here. The receptionist took my information and she had to confirm with the appointment with the vet and would call me back. Within three minutes she calls me back and I can be seen. She was amazing. I show up and explain everything today. Before even looking at my dog I get asked about his shots. I say they're up to date and offer digital copies if he would like confirmation as they weren't done at this clinic. He then tells me I can't switch back and forth between vets and eluded to lack of information in the medical records. Despite this being an emergency, and him agreeing to the appointment, I know legally he has the right to refuse care. I understood his concern and offer the records again but was dismissed. He then asks what my plans are for future vet care, without examination of my dog. I tell him my dog with chronic allergies was given other effective treatment options but that wasn't my concern. He continues his line of unrelated questioning and criticizing the treatment recieved elsewhere. I flat out asked if he was refusing my pet emergency care. He said because I wasn't a current patient of his, despite having a full digital copy of records available, this would be the only time he would EVER help me in an emergency situation even if my vet was unavailable. He treated the emergency while repeating that I could have brought up my prior issues, booked other appointments and he could have offered other solutions. I did just that in the past, so many times, much to the detriment of all my pets. Refusing to treat severe medical issues and blaming me when it gets worse isn't how to win back my business. Leaving medical issues untreated and unmentioned won't either. And finally threating to refuse future emergency care when no one else is available DEFINITELY doesn't make me want to go back. I felt like he was dangling emergency care over my head, much to the detriment of my dogs immediate health and life all because I got a second opinion elsewhere. I would rate this vet a 0/5 if I could.

Dr. Hughes and his staff were always very kind and helpful. He always remembered my dog and the details of his care and always made sure we were both at ease and understood what was going on. Sadly we had to say goodbye to my boy but Dr. Hughes made that process a little easier, and his staff were also very caring and sympathetic. If I ever get another pet I will return to Dr. Hughes without hesitation. Cannot recommend enough.

A vet not to be trusted. His competency is truly questionable. He is biased. He took an x-ray of our sweet little dog and completely misdiagnosed the results as a tumor which would be spreading quickly. And gerne just went ahead instead just went with his recommendation of putting him down right the same day before 6pm without any hesitation of suggesting any alternatives. A bit harsh as a vet! I guess it showed his true colors. We will never use him as a vet again. Absolutely dreadful! We went to the other vet at the clinic and he took blood samples and looked at the x-ray in which he diagnosed an enlarged heart due to the heart murmur condition he is suffering from. This is common among this breed and hence his examination was just and this of course more credible. He also prescribed medication to linder the process. Which he is now taking. And thanks to this treatment our dog is feeling much better. This is just a warning to those Newbies in town. Be on high alert with this vet.

Nothing but positive things to say about this vet. I had to send my cat from Nunavut and was updated at least once or twice a day which helped a lot. They were caring and compassionate over the phone. Since it was uncertain at the time what was wrong with my little guy they only wanted to do surgery as a last resort which thankfully was not needed. I’ve dealt with a lot of vets in NB and AB and he was by far the nicest. Thank you!

marty c

The vet may be fine but the clerk monopolizes you with endless talk and talk and talk and talk. 20 words where 2 will do. In a hurry? Holding a heavy pet? talk talk talk talk talk.

While we have heard the stories, this clinic has done nothing but good things for are dogs. When our cat was sick he brought him back from the brink and he lived another 9 years. My Dog had a reaction to the vaccines this year, and broke out in hives. I called the office and he stayed open late to treat her and within an hour or two the hives were gone and the next day she was fine.

I took my cat in recently after he got pretty sick. I'm new to Yellowknife so took a chance they would be good. They were amazing! It was such a good experience.
