Very friendly folks here and if that were all, they’d be getting 5 stars. The downside is that poor handling of phone calls in a timely manner. If you call the clinic, you never get to talk directly to someone unless it is a “is your call an emergency or can you hold”. I understand that things are difficult in these Covid times. But after a year and a half or more, people should have adjusted and done what is necessary to keep up with the times. In this case, Northwestern Veterinary Hospital has fallen short in my humble opinion. Additionally, when trying to update your pets meds, they require 72 hours before they will respond. I have yet to receive a call back for “meds are ready”. 72 hours seems extreme, but not calling back is just very poor customer service. Feels like they just don’t care. I’m not trying to diss them, but am calling them as I see them.

Today I had an appointment for my 1 year old cat. My appointment was at 11:30. I called the arrival line at 11:20 when I arrived for my appointment and was told I would hear back shortly to bring my cat in. After waiting for 45 minutes I called the arrival line back to ask what was going on and the receptionist told me my cat was in the exam room. I was baffled because my cat was in my lap and hadn't even been brought into the building yet. The receptionist responded with "Oh, the vet must be busy." They were unable to keep track of which animals they had in the building, and gave me a generic answer when I called. After this call I continued to wait, now 12:10 I get a call to bring my cat inside. After leaving the cat inside I waited in the car for another 40 minutes, when I was finally called the vet told me that they looked her over and weighed her. I was unimpressed that that took 40 minutes for a basic exam, they hadn't even given her the vaccines yet. So either they worked very slowing on my cat or my cat was left alone in her carrier while the vet worked on other animals. On top of all of this, our last two visits to this clinic, our vet gave us the wrong sex of our cat. And the prices for anything more that a checkup are exorbitant. Overall, I would not recommend this vet to anyone and I will be looking for a new vet to bring my fur babies to.

I had only the best things to say about this clinic until my dog needed additional testing done. These tests were done just shy of one month ago and I continue to call for the results only to be told "you'll be called tomorrow at the latest". This was initially first said three weeks ago. I've called well over five times now. To make a patient and their family wait this long to find out what is wrong is absolutely unacceptable.

Called this vet clinic while visiting over Christmas from Alberta. My pup got sick and needed to get a refill on some meds she was previously on. They were of no help with having the prescription chalked into them from my vet and since there was a few of us calling around to find out prices, we ended up all calling this clinic and each was given a different price for a visit ranging for $110-$175! I would absolutely not recommend this clinic to anyone!

This veterinary hospital saved my dog's life. After struggling to be seen by other vets the region (new to the area, covid restrictions) they decided to take my dog in as an emergency case. At the time of the operation my dog hadn't eaten in over 12 days and we feared he was going to die. The doctors and staff were all incredibly sweet and made me feel like my 11 year old pup was in good hands. The surgery went well but because of his age and size we just couldn't tell how well he would recover. I can now say that he is on a steady path to a full recovery! Thank you so much !!!

I see a lot of negative comments here and felt I had to share my opinion about the clinic. I've been bringing get my animals there for a number of years and I don't have much money and they have always been helpful and respectful. They would set up a payment plan to help me pay the bill but if you don't pay on time they will not help that way again. Understandable. 2 yrs ago my 14 yr old Rottie was brought in because she was tired all the time and stopped eating and we had to carry her up stairs. I can't tell you what I would've done if those nice people at Northwestern weren't there to help me through this time. It turned out she had cancer in her spleen and wasn't producing enough red blood cells and there was nothing they could do for her. I had to bring her back a week later to have her put down. I will forever miss my Precious (that was her name) and will never forget the help and compassion of their staff. Thank you to all at Northwestern Veterinary Clinic!

I lost my best friend. She was 9 years old. Went in for a simple problem, came home lame. Never recovered. Three excruciating weeks for this sweet sweet girl. She was a patient for 9 years. Great care up until about a year or two ago. Vets work 4 day schedule then off 4 days etc and you never consult with same person twice. So if your pet has a medical history you have to explain it every time and hope they are listening. During COVID-19...they were ill equipped and overloaded. Lost focus of their mandate.

My dog had to be put to sleep in May. I was not allowed to be there with her when she took her last breathe. I understand that there were Covid restrictions in place, but when your dog of 12 years is a member of your family. Having to hand her over to a stranger and not being there to touch her and comfort her was beyond devestating. The building has access to a room with a door at the very back. PPE measures could have been put in place. Not allowing people to be there with their family member when they pass is cruel and traumatic, and so very wrong!!! Vet clinics make a lot of money! If they were worried about covid risk within the building, then set up a mobile unit outside that is solely for euthenasia. Precedures could have been put in place so that no animal had to be scared and die next to some stranger. To anyone that says it's hard on the vets too?...there is no comparison to how devestating it is for the person that considers that pet to be a member of their family. There was zero compassion. My entire experience felt clinical and cold. It was devestating. I shared my experience on Facebook on a local public post. It was honest and truthful. I recently discovered that I can no longer find 'Northwestern Vet Clinic' on Facebook. So either they completely deleted their Facebook Page?, or I was blocked. I will never go back to their clinic. And after seeing the many negative reviews about how they have treated other clients, I am disgusted. The way they have treated people, including myself, is shameful.

This veterinarian practice has been outstanding! When we adopted a rescue cat, and after taking her to another practice in town, we sought a second opinion here and I am glad we did! The veterinarian we saw was fantastic! We asked her to check our cats ears for mites (that we had abother hospital check for twice) and found some immediately. Because of this fantastic veterinary service we were able to get the proper treatment for our pet. They have also been more than accommodating with schedules and squeezing us in when we've really needed it. Would recommend this veterinary practice to everyone.

The place seems even more about the money than anything and don't fall for the "we can do blood work to find out what's wrong. It will take a couple days to get the results and we will call you" scam they won't call and it will take longer to get an answer then they will tell you what you already know

Dr maki quoted us 1500$ to remove a small non cancerous cyst on our pup but said if we left and came back the price would go up. Who has that kind of money on hand as if it's chump change? And saying that the price is going to raise once we leave? Just plain unethical. Went to cross roads and not only are they going to do a payment plan, they're also going to do the whole operation for 750$. Almost half the cost. They said it might even be less. Never going back to Dr maki again.

The receptionist who answers the phones for the after hours emergency service has a DISGUSTING tone and attitude. I feel so sorry for anybody who is freaking out about a sick pet and has to deal with her. I called back in 2016 when we had a dying cat and again yesterday for another cat, and she was so disgustingly rude and arrogant. She needs to be fired.

It's taken me a very long time to come to terms with the passing of my dog and to even be able to write my take on the matter. I don't pretend to be knowledgeable regarding veterinary physiology and care but if my dog is diagnosed with a condition that NONE of the several vets are familiar with, I don't expect to have to do a motherload of online research myself to advise the medical staff, on how to feed her, how she needs to sleep, and then have to go rent a piece of medical equipment myself at Shoppers Drug Mart in order for my dog to get the meds/care she needs because they didn't have it at THEIR MEDICAL FACILITY. I was also (impractically) advised I should take this very sick dog to a research veterinary university in United States for tests. She never would have survived a flight, and/or driving in snow storms with a sick dog the dead of winter which happened to be at least an 8 hr drive? Not factoring in other practicality and all sorts of expenses in addition to a variety of accumulating fees I'd have to pay when there, all when there was useful technical research material online including an experienced university research vet in California that was directly/currently involved in medical research of the disease and sharing useful advice, material and findings, via an online forum. (Which I had mentioned). I would have appreciated a more pro-active approach overall, as this could have been handled locally if there had been the desire and diligence. Also for whatever reason one of my dog's crucial blood test never arrived to it's destination (United States) the first time, my dog's vet went on holiday and left her care to someone else unfamiliar with the case, then another day when I brought my SICK dog in for another test - out of all the staff no one bothered to think to listen to her lungs and heart - as it's known that aspirated pneumonia was a side-effect of that condition. That's plainly SLOPPY. In my opinion, theoretically, whatever chances she may have had, were made slimmer and fell through the cracks. The day after she had that test she was so ill I had to bring her back there, and then she died 2 days later from the aspirated pneumonia. I realise with her condition as it was - it was dodgy, however dogs can survive it and with careful, proper care and maintenance can live years. Thankfully I now live in the UK where I feel I have much better access and there is far more professional and pro-active support than what I received. With the odd exception, from my experiences in a few locales - for the most part I think the prices you pay for care in Canada are astronomical for even basic care. I see 'conveyor- belt type' service for big profits and this does no favour to sick animals that need help, and it's definitely no incentive for regular charitable folks willing to adopt shelter animals.

2nd generation clients. New owners, policies, and customer service have changed. Vet was extremely helpful when discussing the surgery, but after the surgery, we discovered they keep your pet if the bill isn't paid in full. We paid $2800. 3 days later, our dog cant go poo and we call as directed. Their only suggestion: Scans for a blockage, another $500. No blockage, no solution. Today they terminated us as a client via letter because we complained. Unacceptable customer service.

My Great Dane had a large injury which meant we had to go back often over the course of 3 weeks and each time the staff was welcoming, friendly and did all they could to help my girl feel comfortable and at ease. Our experience overall was very positive and my girl has now fully recovered.

Once observed a lady be offered a payment plan on a small bill, and rightfully so, pets are family members. Tried to do the same on a hefty bill for my dog's dental surgery, I was not offered the same option and told they did not offer payment plans. They clearly charge based on what they think you can afford, a complete racket and hopefully some day soon this profession is held to some sort of standard.

I have dealt with this clinic MANY times personally and have brought friends here as well for thier veterinary needs. I have nothing bad to say, in fact it's all good in my experience and that of my friends and family. The staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. I feel 100% confident that I and my pets are recieving the best care possible. I have on occassion had a pet medical emergency during "emergency" hours and they had the clinic opened quickly to address the issues. They have even been helpful about lowering some fees, or combining treatments to avoid additional visit fees. Some have argued that the fees are higher than some other clinics which I cannot verify, all I can say is it's worth paying a little more for treatment that you know is the best. It's not wise to make unfair comparisons, for example if you have dinner at the keg you likely wouldn't complain that you could have gotten an equivalent amount of food elsewhere for cheaper. This clinic is upfront about fees, they will inform you of the total cost and phone you for authorization if something unexpected may increase the cost. I highly reccommend this clinic based on personal experience. I guess it's all about quality of care, what level of quality do you want for your pet? They are also able to help with adjusting costs/options and in some cases able to make payment arrangements. Give them a try and you will not be disappointed. :)

They were very nice and compassionate i called in at 730am on a Sunday because my dog was having a hard time breathing. They got us in at 10 am they did exrays and told me he was full of cancer and at the age of 13 there was not much they could do for him. I choose to let him go. The staff were very good letting me spend time with him. It was very peaceful and sad. Very expensive but they were very friendly the place is clean and comfortable. They could buy a better brand of tissue paper i found it very ruff.

The staff is amazing here, but be prepared for long waits. Both appointments I've had this year have been an hour+ (one for boosters, one for a yearly check up). Keep in mind both the shortage of vets in town and that they have emergencies to deal with and give yourself plenty of time for your appointment.

I have the up most respect for this clinic, the vets and the staff that work here. Carter (Our Dog) has been seeing the vets here since day one. The reception is Always Pleasant and Helpful. Carter was Diagnosed with Diabetes when he was 9, and in 2 weeks he will be 14. They have been prompt on any issues there has been and more then helpful and patient. Carter got a Melting Ulcer in his eye a year ago.... It is uncommon and something that an ophthalmologist (eye doctor ) would look after. The nearest one was 6 hours away in another country... The team at the vets did research and a long story short, they made a serum with Carters Blood. They spun his blood and separated the white and red blood cells. They made a serum with his white blood cells, and also prescribed and antibiotic... His Eye healed. They also offer Laser therapy at the clinic. Carter had a fall and crushed a disc... through the laser therapy they were able to heal his back... It is an Amazing Clinic with an Amazing Team. I am very grateful to have such a great clinic here, as they have helped prolong Our Pets Life more than once.

The service at this Veterinary Hospital is good but their fees for their services are high. They have good qualified veterinarians who try to perform the best services for your pet, however they lack equipment to perform Emergency Services that your pet may need. To compensate for this they refer you to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital. This is not always an option, especially in inclement weather or other restrictive factors. They may be the best and most popular Veterinary Hospital in Thunder Bay and with the fees they charge I don't understand why they can't afford to have all the equipment needed to perform the procedures to save your pet.

Unable to reach by phone for weeks. Spoken to rudely by office staff repeatedly. Dismissed repeatedly. My dog has a chronic skin condition and requires ongoing treatment and food that can only be purchased there .1 refill and must book another appt. By the time you finally get an appt, it is several hundred dollars as skin condition has escalated. I am astounded. The priority seems to be profit at the cost of my pets health. Unecessary appts and costs. I hope more people begin to speak out as I am sure hearing similar stories in the community about this clinic.

I was referred to this office by the nurses registry as It was an emergency and they were the vet on call,I went to their office and they refused to see my pet and gave excuses that are irrelevant as it was after hours, they told me to call the next day and they can see my pet during office hours.called in the next day and they changed the scenario saying they are not taking any clients,I explained the situation to the receptionist and told her that I was told to call in the day next during office hours,again irrelevant excuses.If you don’t want to see emergencies then just don’t be part of the on-call services,very unprofessional and unethical behavior.Not to mention when I presented to the office the receptionist were not wearing any masks at the front desk and were not following covid-19 regulations .it’s sad that these people are called healthcare professionals when they clearly know nothing about compassion,ethics and. Professionalism.

My dog had her first seizure so we made an appointment, but since she had a second one they made sure to get her in next day. We have a plan of action now, nothing was pushed medication/treatment wise that wasn't explained why they recommended it and gave me choices. Thanks guys! - Update after dealing with them and being made to make unnecessary appointments my dog is now on a medication that will lower her life span and will cause seizures if you try and get her off of them. On top of that they wanted to drop me as a patient due to their error of filing my dog under the wrong name even though I have a receipt with my name on from our first visit there. Due to a name change on the other person's part the other name doesn't even exist anymore. I was also told if I wanted a copy of my dogs record they would drop her as a patient. I've found another vet and I won't be going back.

I have been trying non-stop to call and book an appointment for my dog that has a bad ear infection. The line is constantly busy and there needs to be more lines set up so people can actually book an appointment. I have tried to book my dog elsewhere, but no other place will take him because he normally goes to this place and the other places don't have his records. This clinic really needs to step up and find a way for people to get through to make appointments, or at least have voicemail to leave a message This is very poor customer service. I know there is a pandemic going on, but if other places can answer their calls, why not this place too?

Seen 5 different vets for the same problem for hots spots and during a pandemic can’t just prescribe the same medication for my poor dog. I’ve spent over $8000 at this clinic in 3 years and no help from any of the staff. When I asked to Speak to a vet was told they will leave a note but doubt that anyone will call me back. Please go to any other vet: terrible service

I thought a veterinarian took an oath to help animals?? My dog started to have seizures and they refused to see and help him because he was not a patient. Told me to go to my own vet and I told them it was 16 hrs away. Acted as if I was bothering them. We drove 16 hrs to get to my vet and by that time he had 5 seizures and it was too late and we had to have him put to sleep. We are devastated and disgusted in this place.

They are the only vet clinic open today, so we called because our cat is going into acute kidney failure. They declined to see him despite my partner explaining how serious this is. They don’t care about the animals or the owners. If they cared, they would have seen an animal who is in this much pain.

My dog, Sheriff, had nose and eye irritation and they took him in the same day I called which was very much appreciated. He ended up having allergies and I was giving a plan than seems to be working. The bill was very reasonable. The new dog food is a bit expensive but that’s not the vets fault and it is well worth it if it helps. I even received a follow up call 2 days later. Had been a good clinic for many years (10+). Treated VERY RUDELY by a female Vet Student working there on an Internship. Seriously considering another Vet Hospital now. Don't need to be treated disrespectfully by some entitled GenZ'er with an arrogant attitude problem. Very unprofessional. Don’t call yourself a vet hospital if you refuse to take pets in emergencies. Your inhumane is what you are. Tried to get my dog seen who’s in a great deal of pain and having a great deal of trouble walking and even going to the bathroom and they refused us and told us to drive to Winnipeg to the closest vet hospital. YOU’RE CALLED A VET HOSPITAL.

Massive thumbs down to Northwest Veterinary hospital. Had our dog in Sunday for a cold and was told if his mucus changed colour to bring him in. Today it changed colour. Dr he saw isn’t in again until Monday and no other dr would prescribe based on dr notes. Apparently it’s a legal issue and they need to re-examine if they haven’t seen the dog in the past year. So I asked a dr who saw him about three weeks ago to look at the notes and prescribe and apparently she’s too busy and is leaving early. Not to mention he’s probably seen four drs there in the past year. I guess that shows what the priorities are at this clinic and the clear money grab mentality that exists.
