Out if nowhere my little dog was throwing up all day, shaking in pain, and not moving. I knew something was off right away and contacted several vets, all of which were busy and downplayed his symptoms. Mahalo got him in within 30 mins of me calling and took a look at him right away. I felt reassured that he was in good hands. They made sure he was comfortable and well taken care of until they found out what was wrong. The team ended up staying several hours past their closing time to make sure he was stable and had a treatment plan. When we came to pick him up, despite being late to go home, they were all very friendly, patient, and thorough when they told us what was wrong and how to help him. In one of the most stressful and terrifying days of my life, the Mahalo team was comforting, reassuring and thorough. I am so grateful for their team for all they have done. I highly recommend their services, and I will be bringing my dog here for future Vet visits! :)

Unfortunately we had to take our dear cat Ginger in to be put down. Dr. Myriam, Rosie and Donna could not have been more kind or accommodating in helping us through this very difficult time. Dr. Myriam explained the process in great detail and made us feel that we had made the right choice in our decision. Dr. Miriam is the best. If you have a bird make the effort to get an appointment to see her because she is AMAZING! She called me in the evening on Christmas Eve because I was very concerned about a bird I have, even as a breeder some things make you scratch your head. After dealing with almost all the vets in town Mahalo Vet clinic is hands down the best care Bohdi has ever been given. His first visit was awesome the Dr understood the breed and behavior of the breed. .. Bohdi has had every test alive for allergies and has been given every possible medication and not one time did it relieve his itch nor odor.. But cost huge dollars every visit and revisit for med's that did little.... After the consultation with the Dr she was able to solve most of his itch issues as well the odor from his skin issues...OMG my Sheba for the first time in yrs slept all night... As for major issues...Bohds had a mass on his rear left leg...noticed and options given in a rational way that made sense... They operated on Bohdi and removed his mass ( turns out he is lucky as it was a fatty tissue mass ) ,,, However they dealt with him so well... he never behaved scared walking into the office never wanted to bolt out the door all nervous.. He was comfortable in the office area. From the front office staff which are pleasant , polite and understand communication to the medical teams who have a calm rational method of dealing with your animals needs to the admin folks who are understanding and again polite...to walking out the door you feel like you have been respected , understood and your friends needs are of concern... If you are considering a new vet or just looking for a vet I would only recommend Mahalo Veterinary clinic in Nanaimo,..They are hands down the best vets I've dealt with in 20yrs....

We unexpectedly had to make a vet visit, and all the vet in the city were booked, however mahalo put us on a wait list and within a day they call and got us right in do to the severity of our situation. After two days of extremely warm and compationate care from the vet sadly we had to put her down. The hole clinic help us through that terrible moment and made it feel like we were not alone after loosing a pet. We then took our other two dogs in shortly after for checkups, and the one has issues we didn't know about and this vet has walked us through every decision and has been very informative and caring keeping our pet and her anxiety, our finances and mental health in mind. The staff have been there for us at every call, I highly recommend Mahalo clinic for your pets!

We were referred to Mahalo’s urgent care clinic by the Central VI Emergency vet when my new cat Forrest got quite sick and we couldn’t get a same-day appointment with our regular vet. The team at Mahalo was helpful and friendly, and very likely saved my cat’s life. They diagnosed him within the same day and then worked with me to come up with a treatment plan that would allow him to come home for the night but still get the treatment he needed the next day, instead of being transferred to an emergency/overnight centre. We followed the vet’s medication recommendation and Forrest is back to his friendly, playful self. Afterward, they filed our insurance papers and transferred the records to our regular vet. The Mahalo team’s care was such a silver lining during that stressful time. Thank you!

I was very disappointed when I took my dog here. We arrived early to make sure we were on time for the appointment, but still let them know we had arrived. Once our appointment time hit we were told there was an emergency was asked to come back the next day. We instead agreed on 30 minutes later. We came back 30 minutes later and then was told that they were getting things ready. It took another 40 minutes before we were seen. There were three people at the counter when I asked for an update after an hour had passed. Every step in between tasks at the appointment took way longer than it needed to. It took 10 minutes to get the receipt after my dog received her shots. The doctor looking at my dog also wouldn't stop talking in a cutesy voice to my dog. Even while I was trying to talk to her, interrupting me. A lot of lack of professionalism. Gave reasonable advice on taking care of my dog. I understand emergencies happen. They communication and organization of handling what happens outside of that needs improvement. Advice: Be more honest and give more realistic expectations for how long things will take. It's not fair to the pets that have to suffer the waiting. When you have an appointment with all the details of what's needed have things ready to go beforehand. Be more serious and look at the person talking to you over the serious subject matter discussed.

Words can't express the gratitude I have for the WHOLE team at Mahalo Vet. They were the last vet hospital open, we had never been there before, and we called an hour before they closed because our young cat was sick and started declining. Chris who answered the phone was so gentle and kind. The team ended up allowing us to come by last minute when they should have been gone home- the vet technician Fran was so kind and showed my cat so much love. While we waited in the room with our cat the team checked up on us numerous times to make sure we were okay as the vet was tied up caring for another sick pet. Miriam the veterinarian was the most thorough vet I have ever experienced, she explained everything she was checking and she answered all of my questions and had very good best side manner. This small team of three made us feel so cared for. At no point did we feel like an inconvenience- they were all smiles till the very last minute when we left. Even if our outcome had been bad, the genuine care we received made all the difference to us. We will be a loyal client to them as long as we have pets in Nanaimo.

I called about my cat, explained his situation and how he was feeling and was immediately greeted with empathy and was asked probing questions so they could gain a better understanding; which was amazing because until that phone call I was a mess. He was placed on a standby list, and before I knew it I received a call saying Dr. Myriam would like to offer Walter an appointment. When I took him in, I got to watch through the glass(covid 19 restrictrions) while she asked me even more over the phone. What I appreciated the most though is that before she even started examining him, she pet him a whole bunch to make him comfortable and she always told me ahead what she was going to be doing. The other gem of Mahalo is Chris, who took the time to call me, ask me questions and talk me through my worries about Walt even though the clinic wasn't open and that type of experience leaves a lasting memory. Everyone in my family, social group, and household takes our fur family to Mahalo just because of the genuine care that goes into the animal. Walt may not be out of the woods yet but I can say I am so thankful for all the staff involved!

This vet has been amazing in their care and respect for me and my pets (cat & dog). Dr. Dave went completely out of his way to ensure the care and safety for me and my large dog during an emergency during the peak of COVID. Which included him bringing a large stretcher to my home very late in the evening to help do an emergency transport, and talking my very overwhelmed self down from the panic of the situation. The front office staff are so kind and so helpful, and all the doctors are professionals and honest with care plans. I drive across town for both of my animals due to the quality of care. Mariam and her team are amazing. They take such good care of my little Bentley. Other vets gave us wrong info on his heart conditions and made us prepare for his death. Good but... I picked Mahalo for a very specific reason. I will share that with you if you ask. They are trying to do the best they can but I did notice a very noticeable inflation in price for routine things like x-rays and such. The 50% off was close to what it was full rate a year ago with my other vet. I think they are capitalizing on the COVID-19 and reaping what they can to cover bloated lease costs. Also, please watch for emergency pre-pay exam fees. They don't always remember to deduct this from the final bill, as was my experience . The prepay urgent care fee is $125 plus tax so 131.25

We are very grateful to have found Mahalo Veterinary Hospital. My dog was in critical condition and dying. The staff and veterinarian went above and beyond as soon as we carried him through the doors. They sprang in to action right away to stabilize him. They informed me of the costs with each action they took to get my permission beforehand. The staff were compassionate with us as well as our pet. This place is unlike anywhere I have ever been to – they truly care about animals. The veterinarian took the time to consult with specialists and even contact manufacturing reps (in another country) to provide the best care possible. She explained the results in detail so that we would understand what was happening. She is knowledgeable (30+ yrs experience in critical care), genuine, compassionate, and truly wants what is best for the owner and pet. The veterinarian literally stayed with my dog herself all night to provide care. They came in at 6am and stayed until 11pm (after hours during a snow storm). They said that we could call or visit any hour. They phoned us every night to check in. When we picked our dog up, the vet’s partner was laying with him on the floor providing comfort and then hugged me as he knew how worried we had been. I cannot express how much it meant to us to have such wonderful care at such a very difficult time. They let us know that it was not about money and it showed. We were charged an extremely reasonable amount and yet we had the best service I have ever seen from a veterinary hospital. Thank you Dr. Miriam and staff!

Thank you for being so friendly, and patient with all my questions, and friendly and comforting to my dog, as well. I love that it seems appointments aren't booked up months and months in advance. I feel like I can actually get in to see someone if the need arises, between regular check ups and vaccines. Because the vet had a busy morning, I was offered the option of having my dog stay and hang out, and get her check up and vaccines in between the vet's other patients, and I could come pick her up when she was done. We didn't end up having to do that, but what a nice thing to offer, rather than just having to wait around for longer than expected. I appreciated it. We had a great experience, not stressful and confusing like other places we've been.

My Dog Georgie is a client of Mahalo Vet Hospital. We enjoyed our consult and yearly check up last fall. Georgie is a 9 lb chihuahua who became ill very quickly Tuesday night. It did not settle so Wednesday I called in and told the receptionist the details, she said they were totally booked. But to bring Georgie immediately. The vet tech then took all the details, and Dr., Myriam called me within the hour and made some treatment recommendations which I agreed with. This was amazing service. I had been going to another vet prior to Dr. Myriam's opening and had a similar event during the day at the time they told me to go the Vancouver Island Emergency Vet Hospital, as they were scheduled.Even though I had been a customer for almost 20 years. I brought Georgie home Wednesday about 10:00 a.m. The bill was sent into Trupanion the next morning, and I already heard from them. For something so "stressful" it was so caring by everyone at Mahalo Thank you

This place is amazing, words could never sum up the experience you get here. I have a very sick bunny, and they were all booked up, but they took the time to talk to me on the phone, and get my information, and place me on an emergency call list. Not only did they take the time to talk to me, and try to fit my bunny in, but they continued to called me back to check up on us, as well as comfort me in a high stress time. This vet cares very much about you and your animals, you can tell right away it's not a "money grab". Animals are their top priority, and it shows. The level of care these people put in to their job is a very comforting breath of fresh air in this weird world.

Mahalo Review Good vets are pretty hard to come by these days, especially exotic pet experts, but Dr. Myriam is truly one in a million. On a Saturday afternoon my pet rabbit experienced a severe episode of GI stasis. Of course no rabbit savvy emergency clinic was to be found anywhere on the island. A five-hour drive to a general vet clinic in Victoria would have been the best option, until a friend recommended I call Mahalo Veterinary Hospital. After speaking to one of the wonderful assistants, Dr. Myriam returned my call and offered a phone consultation. She was kind, compassionate, patient, highly experienced, and very knowledgeable. She coached me through the steps of initial at-home emergency care with the option to visit the clinic later on if necessary. Thanks to her guidance and expertise I managed to handle the stasis and save my bunny the additional stress of a six-hour return trip to Nanaimo. Dr. Myriam even called back in the middle of the night to check up on things. I have not actually been to the vet clinic yet but will definitely be a patient in the future.

While visiting from Victoria, I brought my golden doodle in on short notice as he was limping due to speargrass in his paw. Dr. Myriam El Mouldi took us that morning and promptly treated him. She’s punctual, professional, compassionate runs a what appears to be a very positive work environment as it looks like she treats her staff very well. Her fees were reasonable, especially given the immediate appointment and she didn’t oversell us on aftercare product. I’m happy to have my pet as part of her caseload before she gets too busy and will consider the drive up from Victoria for routine care.

My experience with Dr. Louis has been phenomenal! For the last 11 years I've cared for two special needs dogs who had their own specialists. Finding a local vet willing to take on the challenge of caring for Dante was a concern for me. Dr Louis listens, researches and is willing to reach out for a second opinion when necessary while offering great communication. I think she's exceptional. In the two times I dealt with this vet they wanted to rip me off with a 100$ emergency fee on top of the 90$ examination fee. The first time I was completely unaware of this, until they has already taken my animal in. The second time they said it was a possibility I might get charged the 100$ emergency fee. When asking for an exact answer I was told I would be charged the emergency fee as the reptile vet works on their own hours and was only around today so it was considered an emergency. If the hospital is open and there is free time to look after my animal which there was, why am i being charged this crazy fee, when i had originally asked to book in for the next day. I am done with this vet and do not recommend unless you have deep pockets.

I've had pets for my whole life (over 40 years). And pets I was solely responsible for financially, personally and emotionally for about 28 years. I've had Cats, Dogs, Rats ( yes, Rats. And they make excellent, intelligent, trainable and affectionate little friends), exotic reptiles, sugar gliders, ferrets, a crow and a raccoon. So yeah.. I've dealt with my fair share of veterinarians and vet clinics over my pet owning life. From surgeries to "she seems weird today" situations. And I felt a loyalty to my vet that I now see, was undeserved. One visit to Mahalo changed everything. My usual vet couldn't take my ferret in an emergency, because it was getting late, so I called Mahalo and they took her in immediately. From the very first second I walked in I was impressed with the caring way they treated us both. The vets assistant's were so caring, gentle and loving towards her. And when I had to make the hard decision to have her euthanized, they were nothing but understanding and caring. I walked out of there bawling my eyes out, but so unbelievably happy I chose Mahalo. I'll never go anywhere else again¡)

There is always some sort of problem here . I’ve tried to give them so many chances and they’ve let me down almost every time. My first appointment i ended up waiting for 5 hours past my booked time. Most recently they failed to give me the correct amount of medicine (I’ve been administering it for 5 months with no issue) and they blatantly said it was all my fault and I accidentally measured out double the amount for everyday... these are just a couple of the issues I’ve had here, I do not recommend bringing your animals here.

Our cat, Mama was acting a bit off, Mahalo Veterinary Hospital saw her within 10 days, assessed her and determined she needed dental surgery. After they assessed her, they sent us home with pain meds and antibiotics pre-surgery to make her more comfortable and scheduled her surgery within a week. They followed up with us once she was home post surgery and kindly took all my anxious calls allaying my fears that I was doing all I could to help her recover. We had her looked at by another vet who gave the same assessment but didn't give any pre surgery meds and told us it could be 3-4 months before they could do the surgery. We just couldn't stand the thought that she would be in pain that long so we are very thankful we found Mahalo!!

I took my budgie, Molly, to see Dr.Miriam today due to rapid respiration’s.. I had called my usual Vet clinic but was told I couldn’t get in to see an Avian vet until Tuesday. It was suggested that I take her to Courtney or over to Vancouver via plane or try Mahalo vet. I could not imagine taking a small bird to Vancouver in a plane or driving an hour and a half to seek help for Molly! From the time I spoke to Rosie on the phone,to meeting Dr. Miriam, I felt Molly was in a special clinic. I went in as an Emergency visit, it was very busy and we were there for about 2 and 1/2 hours, but everything Miriam did was explained thoroughly and respectfully with care and attention to the fragility of a sick bird. She dispensed medication in single doses for accuracy of administration. I have had sick birds before but this care was special. I am very happy that I took Molly here today. Also knowing that Miriam is on call 24 hours is very reassuring. Thank you to the team at Mahalo!

This is the best veterinary hospital I have ever been to! I was traveling with my dog in Canada and needed to send her back home (Belgium). I had the hardest time finding a veterinary clinic that could give me an appointment and the once I found were unable to help me. Mahalo hospital made time for me the very next day. They helped me with all the research and took great care in filling out the necessary documents. To top it all off, they had close contact with the federal vet who had to sign off on my paperwork. When we realized something was wrong, they gave me another appointment and re-did everything! Nothing was rushed and I felt really cared for! They made time for me twice very last minute and I was able to send my dog home with on time and without to much stress. They have a big heart for animals and treat the owners absolutely fantastic!

From the Vets to the front and back staff, ALL have the same philosophy (known as the Mahalo Way) where the animals ALWAYS come first. There are no quickie 5-10min appointments here, expect 20-30mins or longer if the situation is complicated, and remember emergencies ALWAYS come first - annoying perhaps if you're in a rush, but incredibly comforting when a crisis strikes. In a perfect world our pets would receive "Gold Standard" care, ALL the time, regardless of cost. Sadly, financially, that is not always possible. At Mahalo you are NEVER made to feel there is only one option (assuming there are others) and no one here makes you feel bad when diagnostics or treatments must be tailored to your budget. Aside from regular appointments they also offer Urgent Care appointments, and maintain a wait list (just like in human medicine). Every Vet here also seems to have a "special interest" be it in medicine or exotics: skin, allergies, avian, reptile, rodents etc., so expect to see different Doctors depending on each visits circumstance. I cannot fully express how comforting, compassionate, educational and professional these docs are. When you're ready to be a full partner in your pets health choices, you are ready to call MAHALO.

On Wednesday September 26 we brought our little dog in for a emergency visit with diarrhea and blood in it. They fitted us in and provided excellent care and even with the Covid-19 restrictions kept us up to date through the process. This was even with them having a number of emergency cases. This was after we went to the Central Island Emergency Hospital and wasted 3.5 hours sitting in our car and being told he was next and then 1.5 hours later being told they didn't know when he would be getting looked at. They didn't contact us we had to keep calling them. Our poor dog was left in a kennel with diarrhea and came out stressed and needing to do his business after we said enough and had to argue to get our dog out. Mahalo is the best Veterinary clinic we have ever taking out pets to. If you are looking for a good vet this is the one to call. Thanks Mahalo for giving a very important member of our family the care they needed.

You’re not going to find another clinic like this that can help all your species with compassion, quality, and highest standards of animal care. They aren’t cheap because quality health care is expensive. Mahalo Veterinary Hospital provides multiple avenues and options for all incomes. Animals need more veterinarians like this. I am biased because I am a past veterinary nurse, tech, Mgr and instructor, employed by the some of the best facilities including Ontario Veterinary College and Foothills Medical Centre. Dr Myriam brings new age technology with highly attentive veterinary care for all species and will research best complementary and or specialist care for referrals. Providing GP and Emergency Services is a rarity these days. Your veterinarian is as important as your family Dr and it is a good investment, esp when an emergency could require several hours travel and wait time before your pet can be seen. Invest in pet insurance. These days it makes sense. Trupanion is very good. Excellent veterinary medicine combines diagnostics, knowledge, experience and Mahalo has it all. My dog was also a recent patient and as a nervous and often demanding pet parent, Mahalo made it a great experience for us both. Many thanks.

My vet told me I would need to wait two + weeks before they would be able to see my dog. My dog was very sick and I wasn't about to put her health in jeopardy. I called Mahalo Vet and they were able to get me in the same day. All the staff were absolutely amazing!!! My dog was diagnosed immediately. After a week of antibiotic she is now happy and healthy. Mahalo followed up with a genuine check in call. I will be switching vets to Mahalo:)
