My Labradoodle was diagnosed with Bilateral Osteochondritis Dissecans (OCD) of humeral head. Basically he needed surgery to remove excess cartilage in both his shoulders and this place was absolutely fantastic! Everyone was so friendly and informative. They answered all of my questions and helped me understand without making me feel stupid. I would recommend this place for all of your veterinary needs.

Vimmi Singh

Very nice with our pets During covid-19 they're being extremely careful. They're masked and they talk to you about your pet outside of the hospital, then they pick your pet up and take her in.

Ripley was in ICU care for six days. Dr. Dickinson and Sarah are phenomenal both for vetrenary care and owner support! We are fortunate to have this specialized hospital near to home! Much more to do to get Ripley back in good health but we are going down the right path ❣️

Went there yesterday to get a deewormer for my dog because they never asked me for a fecal sample when I brought my puppy. I found out the other day that my dads dog has worms and was scared that my dog had it . So I went and they said I needed to wait if the vet would prescribe it well I waited over 24 hours and heard nothing . My dad told me just to take one in so they could test it , so I did . And I don't think I've ever been so disrespeacted or felt so belittled in my entire life . I walk in and there were three ladies having a conversation clearly saw me and said nothing for about 3 minutes. Then when they did acknowledge me the lady I had talked to the day before didn't even remember anything that I was talking about . And was just being ignorant , tells me that they gave me a cup at the beginning for a fecal sample and they never did . (Which is okay I understand mistakes happen ) But she was getting so short and rude with me . She was like give me the sample - have a nice day rushing me out when I still had questions and wanted to make an appointment to see the vet ! when I'm the client yea I'm only 19 years old but that shouldn't matter , I've never been so shocked with how rude she was . I'm going to complain during my next visit and if nothing gets done I'm taking my dog else where because I don't need to take my dog somewhere with people like that . And telling people I know how they treat people your working with people , you may want to be a people person just a thought .

The best place to take your pet when sick. Our little girl, she is a Labradoodle, had cancer and they have been wonderful with her care. She is very comfortable with the staff and they keep you well updated during procedures. She had surgery to remove the tumor and has been cancer free 2 years now.

Kelly Hemphill

Amazing care and staff! Our puppy went in for sugery and stayed 3 days; we got 2 calls a day with updates! They treated him like their own

From start to finish, we felt taken care of with the staff looking out for us and also our 5 month old Shepherd-Retriever puppy... he had been hit by a car and we had come on referral from our vet because of a fractured hip. Upon a rough quote, we learned that it was going to be possibly $5k-$7K for the surgery. This being in the most financial stressful time for anyone right after Christmas... But we couldn't let our family dog go, and not give him a chance at life. From the front desk staff, to the triage nurse, the doctors, the orthopaedic surgeon, everyone was very friendly, answered all of our questions, and also saved us a lot of money with their honest opinion! They were never out to get our money for their services. Their honest opinion was to not go through surgery, but to rest and heal since puppies are constantly growing bone tissue... WHAT A RELIEF! Thanks to Kendra (front desk), Dr. Dwayne (?), and Dr. Chris for all your helpfulness and kind words to us! 5 Stars! From Zach, Jess, baby Kaeden and Puppy Koda

I can't say enough amazing things about the OVC and the people who work here! Their expertise is impeccable. My 7.5 month old kitten needed a pretty big surgery, and Dr. Singh, Dr. Stine, and Nate (4th year vet student) took such incredible care of my Baloo! Got daily updates and he was receiving the best, round-the-clock care. Nate was awesome with the daily checkups and his skills & compassion when taking care of Baloo - I wasn't nervous at all leaving Baloo overnight. After all that was said and done, the final bill was actually less than the low end of the quote!! I am beyond impressed, and this experience that could have been awful given the circumstances was nothing short of wonderful for me and my little guy. Thank you to the staff! If you are considering OVC for surgery, you will be in the best hands.

My lovely 11 year old cat passed away after their core biopsy to check the cancer. He was totally stable condition before that, they had no idea why he passed away. I suspect propofol they used as it's not recommended for senior cat but no way to prove it. Their student like doctors look so young, I don't think they are good experienced people including technicians. We are totally heart broken, I also don't like their rude tone receptionists. I will never go to this inexperienced hospital again.

Jesse VanHouwelingen

Amazing!! They saved our 10 month old puppy! Will only take out pets here!

REPEATEDLY had to tell the doctors what my dogs medical and drug history was while seeking treatment. Got told several times that my dog's medical history(their records) wasn't filled out, despite my paying a $1000 bill, called back and they still had no written history. If my dog needed to go back they'd have to rely on my memory. For a medical field where I'm sure they boil a LOT of information down when conveying it to the patient/owner, you'd think they'd take care to keep proper records. Absolutely distraught and untrustful of this location now. That and they didn't even fix my dog, we got prescribed a medication that did nothing, when we called to seek help /follow up, after having to verbally tell them my dogs med history AGAIN, they suggested a new drug that was hundreds of dollars every month, WAY outside of my budget. Called my current vet to see about sourcing it for cheaper and he was bewildered why they suggested the new drug when there was X drug available for much cheaper that we hadn't tried and would fit her symptoms. We ordered X drug and now my pup is doing AMAZING. Your mileage may vary but I am very disappointed in the treatment my dog got. 2/5 stars because we at least ruled out some diseases and conditions during all of this. Just unhappy with the lack of care and record keeping

I was referred by my vet because our pup needed a heart surgery. I was well informed of the procedure, risk, cost and so forth. I was given time to think and they were very considerate of the situation. I choose to have the surgery and they were able to give it the next day after the consultation which was a surprise. The surgery was a success and I'm so grateful of the outcome. They called to check up post operation many times to check the status of my pup. Will be going to have the last check soon. Thank you so much.

We are very blessed to have such a resource in Guelph as the Companion Animal Hospital and OVC ICU. The caring specialists in the neurology department here are helping us actively treat and manage our dog’s idiopathic epilepsy and it is reassuring to know that anytime we get into a challenge with a seizure episode, they are available 24-hours a day. Thank you!

We had to drive over 100Km one way to have our bunny checked up for he was limping on one of his hind leg. Everyone was very professional, well mannered and friendly. Doctor was good too. Just didn't like how aggressively he handled the 4 months old injured baby bunny. Doctor was knowledgeable and recommended the best. Our bunny recovered fully within a week. I recommend this place, especially for bunnies. Not many vets know much about bunnies.

When I found out my fur baby had cancer I knew I had to do everything I could to save him. I wanted the absolute best care for him and that's why I take him to OVC. There were people there from Amherst N.Y, a three-hour drive away so you know they're good if people are coming from that far! Thanks to them he's doing great! Everyone is so warm and welcoming and I have to say they don't drain your bank account saving your family member. Amazing people, Amazing place????????

THANK YOU SO MUCH to the doctors and staff here. Dr. Matt and Dr. Alexandra helped our Grizzly get through his Lepto. It was very scary for us, and he needed quite a bit of treatment. They answered all of our questions, and even us took us back when we got negative results from a local family vet to confirm that he was okay and just healing. We cannot thank them enough.

Crusoe “the Celebrity” Dachshund

Top marks for the OVC and Dr. Singh. Crusoe is likely the most followed dog on social media in Canada. He means the world to us, but also so much to so many of his fans across the world, too. Choosing the right surgeon and institution to do Crusoe’s cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal) was critical to us. We are so happy that all our research and recommendations led us here. Dr. Singh was beyond incredible in clearly answering all our questions and concerns, pre and post op. He is a master of his field, especially in minimally invasive surgery (including laparoscopy). We appreciated the team making Crusoe feel at home for what is a scary time, sending us photos of him and frequent updates. Of course I hope we don’t ever need to look at surgery again, but if we did, I am confident entrusting our little “star” to the hands of Dr. Singh and the OVC ❤️⭐️

I had to bring in my pet bunny in an emergency case. Dr. Omar made us feel right at home. Toto was taken well care of and looked after. We received great service even at the follow ups. Once admitted, the doctor gave us daily updates as to how my little one was doing. It was definitely worth the drive and I won't hesitate bringing my rabbits there for any other emergencies.

We were sent here when no one else was able to help our dog, Sadie, after a cancer diagnosis. They were able to give us some more time, while maintaining her quality of life. They were also there at the end, when there were no other options left. We knew throughout that Sadie was being taken care of my caring professionals. All of our interactions with the staff were wonderful and they took the time to answer our questions and help us in any way they could. Although it was a very difficult time for us, we are forever grateful for the caring and help provided by OVC HSC.

We have had many cats and dogs in our lives. To our absolute delight we decided to ask OVC to look at our recent adopted dog's thyroid cancer. The care, empathy and truly decent pricing has put this facility at the very top of our list. Thank you so much to Dr. Stine and her staff for helping our little Bella survive to live another day, and hopefully many years to come. Exceptional work and treatment, and we truly appreciate it.

Long wait times to be expected. It was a referral from my vet, who sent information to the OVC. The LOST the information and told me I had to pay for exams so that they could know what was wrong with my fur baby. I thankfully had a copy of everything my vet sent them and showed them the X-rays. Then they told me I couldn't do what I was originally there for. Complete waste of time. They did however find an ear and an eye infection and treated that. This is the only reason they get an extra star.

We were sent to OVC by an emerg clinic in Toronto because they were the only clinic that had cat blood and could possibly save my son's beloved cat. Chucky (the Chuckster) was hemorrhaging into his abdomen. We arrived at 2 am, and from then on experienced nothing but the best and most compassionate care from the team. Dr. Rebecca Farmer was simply wonderful. Sadly, Chucky was out of options and my son made the heart wrenching decision to put him down. This photo was taken a few minutes before Chucky was euthanized. Whatever your situation, if it's a serious one, this is probably the best place to do what you need to do to give your pet a chance. Many thanks to the OVC folks. You are all making the world a better place.

Receptionist could DEFINITELY use some telephone manners. In a time like this where I am desperate for help for my dog, she answered the phone in such a rude way. I was uninformed about the process to get my dog help and I absolutely did not appreciate the tone she gave me. Made me feel incredibly belittled and stupid. If she’s a college student, though, maybe she just has a lot learn about manners. Can’t blame her entirely, she’s just a kid ????????‍♀️

I live in Mississauga but drive here for my guinea pigs' care because they specialize in small/exotic animals and I couldn't find a vet in Mississauga who could care for my Muffin. Dr. Claudia is so lovely, she's soft spoken, kind, even sweet. Makes us feel so comfortable and is so gentle with our babies. Always want to keep coming back to see her! Definitely worth the drive. Also the front desk staff are always so friendly!

Amy Ellard-Gray

I really appreciate that they text me a photo of our kitten in his vaccine and wellness appointments for my daughter to see. She's always disappointed that we can't go into the appointments in the COVID context, but this is a really sweet way to work around that. This clinic is on the pricier side, I think, but worth it to us for the exceptional care our animals receive.

Our first experience with OVC was Thanksgiving Day in 2015. Our ferret wasn't urinating due to blockage. After going to the emergency vet of Oakville and getting a referrel, we took him up to OVC. We arrived at about 9pm and he was taken back immediately. The vet (Dr. Claudia Kabakchiev, DVM), gave us a break-down of the tests she thought they should do and the estimated total. And she gave us time to think about what we wanted to do. We went ahead with surgery to have bladder stones removed. The surgery was a resounding success. They analyzed the stones to determine what kind they were and from there we developed a treatment plan of food and meds. Our ferret also has Adrenal Disease, and since OVC offers the implant we took our ferret back a month and a half later to get the implant. He went back a year later for a second implant, then back again in July for a third. We took him in in August on an emergency basis due to him having a seizure, they said he might have insulinoma. But they couldn't start him on the pred because it was a steroid and he was recovering from pneumonia, and we decided against the other med option because of possible side effects. Taking him to our regular vet twice in the following fortnight for testing showed that his blood glucose was normal enough he didn't have insulinoma, but we ended up taking him to OVC on an emergency basis when he had another seizure in early November. A student met with us first to go over what our concerns were, then Dr. Zachary Kline, DVM had an extended meeting with us to disuss possible diagnoses and what tests he thought we should do to determine what was going on. The tests revealed possibly insulinoma this time as well, and we started him on a treatment regimen. With insulinoma we can't be 100% positive he has it without a biopsy of the pancreas, which we have decided against since it's major surgery. He's responded well to the med and goes back on the fouth of December for another recheck of blood glucose. OVC is an hour away from us, but their pricing is so reasonable we are choosing to drive there over our regular vet. What costs $80 at OVC costs $140 at our regular vet. And the care is the same caliber. OVC saved our ferrets life two years ago and is still providing fantastic care. I recommend them to everyone. They are extremely thorough and everyone (from reception to vets), obviously cares a great deal about animals and the well being of your pet.

We were referred by our vet to take our bunny to OVC to have an operation to repair a fractured leg bone. Our experience with this hospital ever since has been a very positive one. The care given to our bunny was amazing. The staff are very friendly and the doctors have been excellent at explaining everything to us in a way we could understand. Even though it was quite a drive out to Guelph from Toronto, it has been worth it with the great care out bunny as received. We would definitely recommend this hospital. We have three dogs and have been to a variety of vet clinics over the years. This is by far the best place to bring your pet. You might think that the costs will be quite high because it is associated with OVC, but that's not the case! For one, they don't charge tax on everything because they are a teaching institution. Even 'special diet' kibble is cheaper here; $35 versus $50 at the vet in the old Reb Lobster. Won't take my pets anywhere else!

My little Mia needed to have eye surgery b/c she had cataracts in both her eyes. We were advised that OVC was the best location to have this done. This was definitely 100% true. Dr Pinard from the Ophthalmology clinic and her miracle hands helped our Mia see again. We knew the risks and details of this procedure, but we knew that whatever she needed to have done here, Mia would be in the best skilled hands. We can't explain how much this has brought our Mia back to life. She speaks to us through her eyes and we couldn't have enjoyed them like this without Dr Pinard. Thank you to the entire staff and team at OVC for making my this joy come back to us. You are all so wonderful. *** Highly recommended ***

This is the best care for animals I have ever seen. The team there are incredible. Our dog Benny was injured and on the evening of December 23rd the had a neurosurgeon team and did emergency surgery. I would give this place a negative star rating if I could. Yesterday Oct.4th my dog blocked off from Kidney Stones he couldn't pee and in alot of pain. Took him to my Vet who tried to unblock him but couldn't and told me to give these guys a call cause they deal with emergency cases and have the equipment to do what needed to be done. I brought him home and proceed to call them. I filled them in as to what was wrong with my dog and what was going on. I had x-rays of the stones and a letter from my Vet explaining everything. The person who I was talking to told me that I needed a referral from my Vet before they could do anything. I explained that my Vet was closed by this point and he needed to be seen that it was an emergency situation and all they kept saying is I need a referral there's nothing they can do. I asked again do you handle emergencies yes they said but I needed a referral before they did anything. They were ok letting my dog suffer and crying in pain thank be to God I found a Vet who was willing to help me and my dog. If you have a pet emergency don't go to this place they would let your fur baby suffer or worse before they would help you all because of a stupid referral. Take your pet to somebody who cares and is willing to help cause these people don't care and are not willing to help at all unless your pet is a patient of theirs.

Christine Wang

Do NOT take your pets here. Maybe they are OK for regular checkups, but on a referral basis, they do NOT have the expertise to help a pet who is extremely ill. I took my beloved dog here when my regular vet referred us for possible cancer. First of all, the "attending" was an intern!!!! Which I get, it's a teaching hospital...... but this also means, they dictate the direction of the appointment without sufficient experience. For me, I did not get answers, it was more like, maybe he has this maybe he has that, cancer most likely. They did NOT do the tests I asked for and recommended something very invasive. After educating myself and talking to multiple vets elsewhere, I knew for FACT there is a simple blood test that would help diagnose him, instead the vet at OVC insisted they need to put him under heavy sedation for a much more painful and invasive procedure. Due to his immobility, we have already taken extensive X-rays at our regular vet which was sent to OVC. However, after reading OVC's report, I realized they still put him under unnecessary duress!! unnecessary pain tugging and pulling at him and which they described in the report "extreme pain"!!!!! with the X-ray already provided this is not necessary!!!!! You already know he is in extreme pain!! Why torture my dog after you already know this????? My poor baby could not eat, move, walk, sit, or lay down after the appointment. It was heartbreaking the amount of unbearable pain OVC caused. The medical opinions I received made no sense. I went to 2 different vets afterwards, both disagreed with OVC, and prescribed the drugs I asked for as the benefits significantly outweighs the risks, and "fingers crossed" my baby is on the mend. I would like to believe this was not due to pure complete evilness, but just utterly unspeakable inexperience as the attending was an intern, who does not know any better. Please please do NOT take your beloved pet here. P.S. the only thing I got out of this was to be told my dog definitively do not have heartworm... thanks ovc...... I knew that before coming here!! Pretty sure my vet and the extensive radiology report sent to OVC would have mentioned possible heartworm if he had any.... utterly unspeakable to have such irresponsible "vets" treat serious illnesses

NIGHTBREED3R

High prices and alot of guess work. Remember this is a teaching clinic. If your pet has something rare wrong with it they will use your pet as a 'guiney pig' and charge you top vet rates, even when students are working on it. Check your bill. They take full advantage of ppl with big hearts and pet insurance, especially if your dog is a very rare and expensive breed.

Brought my sphynx for cardiology exams every year to check for hcm. Even though the price increased significantly and getting appointments in the recommended time seemed difficult. My cat didn't make it to her appointment (in 7 months) after testing positive February and continued thickening end of May. I felt like I was just waiting for her to die, because I'll miss something and she seemed well, her resting breathing was normal. I gave her all the medicine everyday until she suddenly couldn't breathe. She died 2 months before her next appointment, no changes to her medication.

I have no idea what happened between the time we dropped off our cat and the time we picked him up. Being you can't observe how they are treated, I think they should video tape the interaction. They certainly don’t tell you if they had any difficulty with handling. Or might minimize it so they don’t appear they couldn't handle it. We gave them Rescue Remedy to use, but looks like they didn't (perhaps not recognizing its benefit) and just went ahead with a stressful procedure under sedation causing drooling and panting as a side-effect. This cat’s behaviour changed from a playful interactive cat the day before and the morning of the appointment, to being in flight and hiding mode when we try to be near him or feed him. He came to be evaluated for a hearing loss due to an over prescribed Surolan medication (medical "faux pas" - to be polite - from another vet). He was salivating, almost nauseous and panting on the way home. - sedation rxn. He now wont accept food and goes and hides. I suspect stressful handling or them being insensitive or unaware of how painful his ear was to examine. Although they tout a “no-fear” policy and using pheromones, I have no idea what occurred, BUT I can SEE the effect. It took them 3 hours to do the exam and test, plus the 90 minute drive there and back, so that kitty was cooped up for 4.5 hours. In itself that shouldn’t have been too bad, but something must have happened that traumatized him. Did they try to put an otoscope into his ear incorrectly and caused him pain that he still has even now? They only had a resident (in neurology) on staff who admitted he had not handled or done an ear exam/culture in the past 6 months. Super nice person, excellent communicator – seemed patient and caring - doing his best with what he had been taught. BUT no treatment options or followup was available at the time. All he said he could do was refer on to another specialty. The medical profession is just going to do what they are going to do, as piecemeal as it is, and you can take it or leave it. So sad, too bad, for us and the cat. Worse was that they really did nothing for him other than a test to confirm what we already knew about him having some hearing return after the over-dosed meds and WHICH ear had hearing, but not to what extent. That "really" "meant a lot" to the cat! The only thing that changed was his behaviour. He is still partially deaf from the medical intervention that caused the ototoxicity in the first place, BUT are hesitant to admit is causal, though he went from hearing to deaf in 2.5 days of the prescribed meds. No culture was done for the ear infection and the ears weren’t even cleaned when they saw debris . I am really not sure how the cost managed to be $330 for being no further ahead in getting him treated and another wait for another referral. What should he do about the ear infection in the meantime?? The referral isn't booking until 5 months from now! No answers. And you can't even leave a message as it is on night mode for next two days. We are on the medical roulette wheel - cash $$ and $ur-prize$ ! I STRONGLY RECOMMEND the OVC look at having an Animal Communicator on staff and recognize the benefits of Rescue Remedy applied every 15 min before a procedure/event throughout its length.

My Boxer is in the blood donation program at OVC, it's the very best place for your sick pet, should your vet be out of options. It is one of the top teaching university in the world. If you have an emergency this place is a must if you want fast action to help your pet. My little dog suddenly lost her ability to walk last Tuesday night we took her to the vet and after a quick evaluation she informed us that our pet needed emergency surgery on her back. The following morning our vet called and informed us that she made a referral to this hospital, I immediately informed her to call the hospital to advise them our ETA I traveled 500 miles in 7 hours. As soon as we arrived we where met with prompt service our pet was taken away for tests to determine the course of action. With in hours of our arrival she was diagnosed and was being treated surgically for the problem, we where kept in the loop on everything that was happening, the Dr called us before and after the procedure which gave the feeling of total comfort of this whole ordeal . While in recovery we received at least 2 to 3 updates a day via phone and in person. I still can't believe such a place exists and these people care so much there is no money grab there, like you would normally be accustom to, from most vets, all these people wanted to do is help. So if you pet has a problem and you feel that your vet is confused ask for an immediate referral to this organization , there is no doubt in my mind that you will be impressed and your pet will get the help it needs.

We can’t say enough good things about the service and the staff at OVC. They’ve seen our dog through two major surgeries and have been nothing short of amazing. They took great care of her during her stay and left us feeling confident to care for her at home when we picked her up. They even followed up with a phone call to see how she’s doing and answer any questions.

Dr Glassman was excellent to deal with. He is very knowledgeable and explained everything to me. He always made me feel that Snowy was in good hands . He updated me daily with her progress. everyone at OVC Companion Animal Hospital were very kind. Reception was always friendly and understanding. Lovey group of Doctors and Technicians

The staff at OVC helped us help our sweet bunny Melody as much as we could. Melody recently succumb to her disease but we wanted to thank Dr Claudia Kabakchiev, Dr Brandy Kragness, and Dr Hugues Beaufrère and all the other staff at the small animal clinic that have helped her have a longer life than she would have otherwise and thank you for helping us through our lost and bringing her for her final arrangements.

We were referred by an after hours animal hospital after our little 5 pound Pomeranian got into the garbage and lodged a bone in her esophagus in front of her heart. Our mango was in pain, and wasn’t able to breath. We drove down at 5am for an endoscopy. They saved her life. Kind and compassionate people. We will always be grateful for the doctor that helped Mango, and the staff that was so kind to her and us. Thank you from my daughters and I.

My (really sick) bunny was referred to CAH by his primary veterinarian initially for bladder stone and inconsistent kidney values. But after an extended stay at the CAH and several investigations & tests later it was concluded that he had a rare and degenerative form of cancer in bunnies. We were able to maintain our sanity through this harrowing journey because of the utter dedication shown by the doctors there. I would specifically want to mention Dr. Claudia and April for taking care of my baby in his last days. Thank you for trying everything in your capacity to diagnose what Snowball's real issue was. I know I lost a part of my heart when we sadly had to put Snowball down but Thank You for everything - your patience, knowledge, planning of next steps, updates on how my baby was doing on regular basis was highly appreciated!

The absolute best Opthalmologist in the KW, Guelph and surrounding area. Dr. Pinard leads an excellent team who planned everything out to go smoothly. She is also very knowledgable and perscribed an amazing treatment plan to treat my dog's eye condition - the normal vets don't have the required level of expertise. The only downside is the wait list. It was a bit longer than what I had hoped for but that is due to limited number of Opthalmologists in this area. The pricing was really good as well. Less than half of what a normal vet in Guelph charged to examine the eyes.

Outstanding state of the art clinic with world renown staff! My lovely Matilda (pictured in my avatar) was referred to here for Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO) which she recovered beautifully from. Some years later she suffered from a Fibrocartilaginous Embolism and was given the very best of care during her stay, and is now resting comfortably at home. The veterinary staff were very encouraging with her prognosis and helped us feel at ease when we were so worried. Will not hesitate to use their services again, I can't thank them enough for what they have done for my beautiful girl.

My story is long and I'm not going into it here. It I will say they saved my Diezel's life 6 years ago. Had I not made the decision to drive out there from brampton at 11pm in a snow storm in December he would've died and I would'nt have had 6 more amazing years with him. He lived to be 12 with all his ailments and we stayed with the Guelph OVC all the way the way through. In the end he was struggling to breath and coughing so hard so I called Midtown mobile to come to my house for his euthanasia as I found that to be more comfortable for him. He passed June 20/2017 and I'm still devastated. But I will always cherish those 6 extra years I had with him because of all the great vets and vet techs here. He never hated coming to the vet when we drove to Guelph he was happy to see everyone there. Thanks again. ❤️

I brought my Loki here as recommended by my usual vet and I truly thought he was dying. Dr. McLagan was his emergency specialist and I can’t thank her and the rest of the team enough for saving his life. She is warm, calm and compassionate on top of having such expertise. She explained things in plain language and I felt like I knew what was happening with my baby at all times. Thank you to the whole emergency team and especially to Dr. McLagan- to me you are all superheroes.

After unnecessary procedures and $1000 later, my bunny was worse off then when I originally brought him there. After he spent two days at OVC, he was no longer able to get up and ambulate. Apparently, Dr. Claudia Kabakchiev did not know how bad his state really was at discharge and blamed his unsteadiness on his disease process. Sadly, we had to euthanize my bunny after all of that. My experiences have always been negative each time I have been at OVC with my pets - just expensive bills with no progress!

Don't ever take your pets here! I was forced to because I had a severe case with my dog and every other animal hospital I took him to said they didn't have the proper equipment to care for him. They made me put down a $1000 deposit and he stayed in hospital for 2 days and they then told me there was nothing they could do for him and that I should euthanize him. I was so devastated and wanted to keep trying, but they said even if I spent $5000 there's nothing they could do. So I followed their advice as hard as it was. The vet then told me what my bill came to which was around almost $800 and the euthanization was like $150 I want to say... so I should've had more then enough to cover all of that. Then the next day they call me and said I owe them almost another $400!!! I couldn't believe it... I explained what I was just told the night before and they said the doctor didn't say that. I even asked to speak with the doctor and she denied our whole conversation even though i had my dad and sister in the room with me when she said it! I should've gotten a receipt, but my dog just got euthanized and I was devastated... that wasn't even on my mind at that moment. Don't trust them!!! If you have to go there like in my situation get a receipt for every step of the way! They will try and cheat you as much as they can. This happened a couple years ago now... it took me a while to write this because I was too heart broken to keep thinking about it, but heard a horror story from my co-worker regarding this place as well so I had to come on here and tell my story. The reason I didn't want to take my dog there to start with was because I took my bearded dragon there before this when she had a prolapse and they gave her too much anesthetic and killed her. I don't know how this place is still even open they're a bunch of crooks. Please if you can take your animal else where PLEASE DO!!!!

I have had my dog there once before with great results. Unfortunately this visit was different. Paid out 1100.00 dollars for a bunch of test performed by a vet that spoke terrible english an was not good at explaining the purpose if the test. She definitely was not very confident. Our original estimate was 4000 dollars. We pulled our dog out the next morning and took him to our vet and all was taken care of. It just seemed that they want to run every test in their book with little explanation. We left there very disappointed .

Terrible professionalism. I was referred to the OVC from my vet due to my pet being exotic and many vets are unequipped to deal with the type or surgery needed. The individual on the phone was rude not compassionate or understanding whatsoever. I have an emergency as my pet needs to be looked after immediately or they will die because it is a rabbit who is not eating and she continued to say they aren't taking any animals etc. I was considering switching both of my exotic pets to this clinic but I will definitely not be and I would not recommend going here. I understand there is a pandemic going on but if a pet is going to die and they are a vet equipped to handle it why wouldn't they listen to the person in need of help? Update: my rabbit died.

This place neutered my friends cat and lost him in the process (he has been missing now going on a week). After losing the cat, proceeded to tell my friend to rename her cat Houdini and were not at all caring of the situation. Keep in mind this cat just underwent surgery and is in need of medications. Please tell me how an animal hospital manages to LOSE an animal? Very unprofessional and very irresponsible. If I were someone planning on taking my pet somewhere in hopes he would be in good hands, this wouldn't even be my LAST resort. I would not recommend this place to anyone, nor will I EVER trust my pet with these people. I will be telling all my friends, and anyone I know who plans to use this facility to advise against doing so. If they lose peoples pets imagine how they do with the actual procedures at this place. If I could give this place 0 stars I would.

The reception needs to be improved for dropping off a pet. I got there for my appointment and called the indicated phone number at the door. But it went to voicemail. Then, after contacting a person thru the emergency number, I was told to wait at the front door. It was pouring rain and I waited outside for 25 minutes. I talked with 2 staff people as they were fetching other pets. Some how, I was not on their list. Finally, a student took my dog in, 30 minutes after her appointment time. I am wet and shivering in my car now.

My dog had had a battery of test at the vet to try to understand why his feet and legs were degrading with no real conclusion. I was referred here by my vet and ended up speaking to the head surgeon. He was able to identify that my dog had a very rare and unnamed condition as he had seen it in a few Jack Russels in the past. Although there was no treatment or cure it at least gave me the peace of mind identifying his condition. I'm so glad I brought him here.

I am so glad the Ontario Veterinary College exists, and it's such a great place, relatively close to home. Years ago I took one of my birds to a Toronto vet emergency clinic with a torn bleeding toenail because it got caught in one of his toys, and they wouldn't even touch him, didn't know what to do with a parrot. Had I known of OVC then, I would have taken him there. Thank God it wasn't a life and death emergency. Having taken my birds to a GTA exotic clinic, including specialising in birds, for almost 20 years, I took one of them to my regular clinic a number of times over 5 years for a recurrent infection. All they continued to do was give Baytril (seems this is ALL they EVER give for ANYTHING), and do nose flushes. Over the years it got worse until finally I was referred to OVC for a diagnostic CT scan. Finally! Competence and wonderful care. While expensive, OVC is worth it. Caring staff and amazing Dr. Kline. Dr. Kline, relatively a new vet, not only skillfully treating my bird's issue, also diagnosed another minor issue which should have presented obviously at her regular yearly visit with her regular vets, who are significantly more "experienced" with more years under their belt. Not so. Even I noticed something was wrong with the skin on her foot but attributed it to aging (in her 20s - middle age). I was thankful to Dr. Kline but angry with my own vet clinic for not diagnosing (not even noticing it) something SO basic during a PHYSICAL exam. Dr. Kline provides detailed and extensive followup emails, and phone calls as well. Time is not a factor, his care for your pet is. He is honest and does what is best for your pets. Wonderful doctor, wonderful clinic. I may just pack all my birds up at once and make the trip once a year to make OVC my regular vet clinic. VERY impressed.

Came in Christmas night after a refferal from the animal hospital in Burlington. My 8 yr old miniature dachshund was in an incredible amount of pain and losing the ability to move. By noon the next day he was out of surgery and recovering. They diagnosed a depression on his spinal cord caused by a disk in his neck. I get calls each day in the morning and night with an update on his recovery. This weekend I came in for visits and saw first hand how much the doctors care and how professional they are. They fully explain everything they do in terms of the treatment, and recovery. As of writing this, my little man is still there. But he's in great hands, and will be returning home this week. Can't thank the doctors enough for everything they've done and continue doing.

I had a bad feeling from the beginning. Had my bunny's teeth removed. I was hoping to get an older more experienced doctor than all the brand new young ones. After spending over $1300 and my bunny not eating for 3 weeks he went through hell. His teeth grew back 2 months later. It's a system set up that is just not right. To re-do the surgery it should be free since it was not done properly, because if it was and all the bacteria was killed the teeth wouldn't grow back. But, you have a piece of paper backing you up that nothing is your fault. If you do the job properly the first time this stuff won't happen. You put my bunny through hell and there is nothing you do to help instead say oh ya well we're just gonna charge you more money and put your pet through more hell only to have you come back again and again ... I wish I never brought him to you in the first place.. My gut feeling was right..

My dog has been here so many times in the past 3 months, most of the receptionists and vets know him by name. I’m so lucky to live so close to this amazing facility!! When your dog takes ill, it’s completely horrible. But these folks really know what they’re doing. The first time he was almost discharged and one of the interns noticed neurological symptoms. Had he not caught them, I may very well have lost my best bud. I booked an MRI the same day as my dog- mine was 3 months later and his was the next morning. They have every tool under the sun to help your pet, and I wouldn’t recommend anywhere else!!

We were referred to OVC by our Vet in Elora. All of the staff here, from reception to the students techs, student vets and Doctors are incredible individuals. Our Shepherd is reactive and was admitted to ICU and Internal Medicine and they were quick to make him comfortable and relieve his anxiety. We had to say goodbye to him and they made the incredibly difficult decision and process just a little bit easier. I was very pleased with the doctors and assistant when we were there with our dog Bella to have a TPLO surgery. They were very informative, they told us step by step what was going to happen, what potential risks involved and post op care. They have called me everyday since we brought Bella home just to check in on her. Super happy...although one lady at the reception area needs to step up her communication and people skills...she was pretty rude and given the situation on how nervous my family and I were she was not helpful at all. So very disappointed with initial contact of ovc reception...just one lady the other lady was very nice.

If your pet has a problem that your regular vet can't deal with or figure out this is the place for you. All the staff I have encountered were very empathetic and professional when dealing with pet owners who are often very upset. The vets the owners deal with are graduates working and conferring with an experienced vet. I felt I got the best of information and treatment for my cat. Although I was able to take my cat home fairly soon after treatments, I meet a women whose dog stayed for a longer time. I was impressed that she could go into the kennel and spend time with her animal. Soooo important for both the animal and owner. Two things I didn't like was that I received no notification that the vet I worked with was done with internship and left. I would have liked to wish him well. Also beware that the costs are higher than in a regular vet practice but I guess it is a specialist type clinic with higher expenses...just saying.

Zoodle Bug

We brought our sweet boxer here at just 7 years old when she started having seizures unexpectedly and uncontrollably. The staff took immediate care and control and provided wonderful medical care to our pet. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with a large lesion in her brain and is no longer with us. They even sent us a card expressing their sympathy ..further demonstrating they are simply great people! We are forever grateful !! Thank you ovc

Refuses to treat my dog with radiation treatment because they are not taking new patience during this pandemic. All other vets and hospitals do still look after animals in need, but not OVC. This review is a little late in coming, but better late than never. Let me say first that I treat our dog like one of my children. When it came to have her spayed and her stomach tacked I wanted it done laparoscopically. In case you’re not aware, this is operating through several small incisions using a camera. When a procedure is done this time recuperation time and pain is greatly decreased. Our vet actually recommended UofG because to have these procedures done our dog would have needed an incision the length of her abdomen. Yes, it was more expensive, and our dog was gone overnight. When I weighed the pros and cons we went for the extra cost. I was really impressed with the care our dog received from the moment she arrived, right up to post discharge. We were contacted several times while our dog was in their care. Not because of a problem but to provide us with updates and current status of our fur baby. The only negative I had was that they do not allow you to be with your dog throughout the time they are in their care. On one hand I understand the extra responsibility needed to do this (they say it’s for insurance reasons), but if you take a wholistic approach I feel it would be less stressful for your pet to have someone there that they know and are comfortable with. I believe studies show that animals (and people) often require extra medications to compensate for the extra stress they are under. That said I can also see the problems of having to deal with a pet parent who passed out at the site of blood and now staff need to divide their attention. That’s why I think it should be a case by case situation. As a healthcare professional I understand the need of maintaining a sterile field and the site of an operation would not have been a problem. In the end I was extremely satisfied with the care our baby received, and would not think twice of using their services again. Thank you, our baby continues to be fine with no complications.

It is broken hearted that I write this. I brought my sweet, innocent Charlie here thinking he would get the best care possible. Charlie was diagnosed with a mast cell tumour on his leg in December and he needed to see an oncologist. I chose OVC thinking they are supposed to have the best equipment, staff etc. My first video appt was Feb 4, we discussed his situation and they repeatedly told me that mast cell tumours are very unpredictable. From Dec to Feb, his tumour grew significantly and timing was of the essence. On Feb 12 he had an MRI and all his blood work were done, along with other testing to ensure the tumour was contained and had not metastasized. His results came back and everything looked good for surgery, the tumour was contained, his blood work was good and they even ruled out chemo. They booked him for surgery on March 15... he had to wait another month because his condition was "stable". By Feb 22 his tumour was significantly larger but I was told to keep his meds as they were as anything could trigger his tumour. On Mar 1, he started favouring his leg and I contacted OVC and was basically told to sit tight. On Mar 3, Charlie was in so much pain, I was told to give him gabapentin and to bring him in the next day. On Mar 4, I brought him in and he was examined and returned to me within the hour. His surgery was moved to Mar 8 from Mar 15 (I suppose his worsening condition justified moving up his surgery), they gave him a 3 day slow release buprenorphine injection to manage the pain until his surgery. Charlie's leg had swelled to nearly double within 36 hours and was yelping of pain. They apparently didn't have any beds for him so I had to wait until Mar 6 to bring him back in, at this point he was too unstable to do surgery and my poor sweet Charlie died on March 7 at the hands of people who were supposed to help and save him. In February, Charlie was too stable to have surgery and then within 3 weeks he was too unstable to have the surgery..... when is the right time then? We are heart broken and devastated. Charlie died at the hands of a surgical team who didn't think his life was worth saving. Rest in peace my sweet baby... you deserved so much more <3

OVC HSC Small Animal Clinic saved my little buddy Nacho's life. I have a Yorki 8 months and he is me and my wife's best friend. For 2 weeks my little buddy was feeling sick and after going to see 4 veterinarians 3 of them stated he had a neck injury and I was told to just let him rest for 2 weeks. That was a bad idea, WRONG Diagnosis! 1 of the veterinarians the last one I saw Dr. Amany Ghali from Aquitaine Animal Hospital diagnosed my Nacho right. He knew something was wrong with the little guy and gave him an antibiotic shot which later proved to give my Nacho sometime to live. This was important! At around 2:00 a.m my Nacho was getting up sitting down getting up sitting down moving all around the place like he was confused. He was also moaning so went right away and brought my buddy to Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Animal Hospital. They diagnosed him for about 4 hours and we were told that Nacho was in critical condition and needs to be transferred to Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph. I had to pick Nacho up and drive 1 hour out to Guelph. When I arrived in Guelph at Ontario Veterinary College I was greeted at the front door and he was put right away into the intensive care unit as he was in critical condition. He couldn't even move on the way up driving to Guelph it was like he was dying. After a while we received a call to do some tests on Nacho. They did a CT Scan and found Nacho had a bacterial infection in his brain. He had Bacterial Meningitis in his brain which is EXTREMELY RARE. Ruby Ng from Ontario Veterinary College whom is very polite and knows how to take care of your dog told me the amount of pus in Nacho's brain surprised everyone there that he was still alive. I had to make a decision to operate on my buddy and it was a 50/50 chance as they had no studies for this surgery and they needed to admit Nacho in quick to stop the spreading of the bacteria in his brain. We decided to go with the surgery as I was told my Nacho was fighting for is life. So we decided to proceed with the surgery even though this was a high risk brain surgery that needed to be performed. Me and my wife want to thank Ontario Veterinary College for their expertise and all the staff that helped save my dog Nachos life. This surgery was extremely difficult as it had to do with my dogs brain. Ruby Ng and Gibran Castillo was extremely helpful, very detailed, comforting and very informative keeping us up to date on Nacho's outcome. Fiona James the supervisor who operated on Nacho along with Ruby Ng and Gibran Castillo saved my Nacho's life. Nacho is doing extremely well now and is recovering quickly. This was also over a weekend so I want to thank Ontario Veterinary College for rushing my little buddy Nacho in and performing surgery with perfection and excellence. No other animal hospital could have performed this procedure only Ontario Veterinary College had the expertise to perform this type of brain surgery. Thank you Ontario Veterinary College for saving my Nacho's life. Me and my wife's best friend. 5 stars for Small Animal Clinic OVC HSC along with Fiona James, Ruby Ng and Gibran Castillo. Thank you for saving my best friends life!

Terrible service. Did unnecessary testing on my dog without my consent or knowledge. They will rack up your bills without even letting you know about it. Also very bad at giving updates. Did not even heat from an intern until 2pm. Updates should be done in the morning

We were referred to OVC by an emergency vet clinic in the late hours of the evening. Our dog had an adverse complication from a routine procedure and was in dire need of attention. OVC was extremely thorough and attentive with our needs. While we were there, they gave us all the possible options for our dog. The staff was kind, caring, and knowledgeable. They were straightforward about what each option would look like for us and our dog. After we left our dog there, they kept me updated constantly through the touch-and-go hours. If I didn't understand something, they took the time to explain it to me. They asked my consent before doing anything and advised me of the approximate cost, when asked. They were honest with our costs and we experienced no surprise costs upon leaving. They have been there to answer any follow up questions we may have and to provide and follow up care, if needed. We have experienced amazing care at OVC, we can't say enough great things about all the staff there!

Not a very pleasant experience. I find they take advantage of your vulnerability to save/help your pet.

I took my dog Bridgette here on the advice of my home vet. She spent approximately 9 days here in the ICU. Dr. Phillips and her team are amazing, and took great care in ensuring that I was updated with my dogs recovery and what the next steps were. Although my dog sadly passed away on the 31st of December, I am greatly humbled that she had the opportunity to be cared for by the best veterinary team in the province. Because of Covid, I was unable to be with my dog while she was in the ICU, but the team gave me updates multiple times during the day letting me know how Bridgette was doing and helping me to understand her condition. They also let me FaceTime with her which was such a true show of empathy. They made everything make sense. I am saddened to write that Bridgette has passed, but I will forever be grateful to OVC - truly wonderful and talented people who will do everything they can for your beloved animals. Thank you OVC, for everything you do.

Almost a year ago our Greyhound (Hannah) ran head-first into a post in our backyard and fractured her scapula. We got a referral to OVC for $3500 after receiving an initial referral from Oakville Mississauga Emergency Veterinary Hospital for $8000. We chose to go with OVC because they had better google reviews and we're very glad we did! From the moment we arrived, staff were waiting outside to help us bring her in and get her settled in an exam room. They had already received the x-rays from our vet and sent a surgeon in to speak with us within 20 minutes of arriving. The surgeon got down on the floor with us, patting and talking to Hannah, while she explained the surgery and recovery process to us. The vet technicians and reception were all very friendly, knowledgeable and comforting in what was probably the scariest week of our lives. Most importantly, all the staff were gentle and kind to Hannah during her stay. They were transparent in everything they were doing with Hannah, provided cost estimates up front, and even came in UNDER cost estimate at $3300 for the surgery. We got two calls a day while Hannah was in their care to update us on how she was doing and they allowed us to come visit her the day after her surgery. The post-surgery care was exceptional - we were able to call any time with questions for the surgeons and vet technicians and the cost of ongoing x-rays was reasonable ($230 each time). Hannah recovered fully from her fractured scapula and she doesn't even have a scar or a limp to prove it! Hannah is our whole entire world and we accept nothing but the best care for her, which is why we wouldn't hesitate to bring her back to OVC for any further emergency veterinary care. BIG thank you to all of the OVC staff for taking the best care of our little girl!!

they take all your money and give you false hope.. my pet passed on with all the different types of chemo they gave her and got so sick..worse than what she was before we went there and cost over 10k... do not put your pet through it!!!

I think they do the best with what they can but they told me my dog was fine even though I knew she was not and 2 months later she was blind. They ran tests, said everything was normal but I could tell something was wrong. They then had the audacity to ask for more money for more tests once the damage was done. Their prices are really fairly high as well, save your money.

The neurological staff at OVC are the best of the best. We had been working with them on my dog’s epilepsy for several years until he passed away and they always went above an beyond. Not only did they do everything they could to help my dog but also put me first and went out of their way to make sure I was okay at the same time. They are some of the most caring and wonderful people and we were lucky to have had them in our lives. Jenn (Neuro tech) and Dr. Castillo especially almost became family to us. Thank you for everything.

They have the best emergency care at this place. We called ahead to let them know we were bringing our dog in late on a Friday night and they paged internal medicine specialists to make sure they had the right vets evaluating and treating out dog. Their primary concern is treating sick pets and not lining their wallets. Highly recommend to everyone.

Caring and compassionate doctors, technicians and staff. Although the outcome was not what we were hoping for, the doctors did everything they could for our little pup. They were so professional and called us every step of the way with updates. They allowed us to visit her when they were worried about her prognosis. They helped us to make the best decision for her. A counsellor reached out after to check in. We are grateful that we have such an amazing hospital so close by. Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts.

They took very good car of my very sick rabbit. The staff is very knowledgeable and friendly.

Wonderful, friendly, caring staff. Undoubtedly a great place to bring your pet. Unfortunately the billing and invoicing is not very good. I settled my bill when I picked up my pet and there was a zero balance owing. Two days later I received an invoice for $300 in the mail. When I called to inquire they said there "may" be an additional $300 owing but I should wait to pay it and call back in a week as all invoices go through an internal audit. When I called back after a week they said there was a zero balance. Two days after that I received another invoice for $300 in the mail... massive confusion.

We recently had to deal with a difficult and terminal diagnosis for our 7 year old westie. She was cared for in her final days by Companion Animal Hospital and the doctors and nurses were amazing in our difficult time especially Dr. Shaw. She was so supportive and understanding and helped us work through the difficult diagnosis we were facing that ultimately led us to the difficult decision to let our girl go.

I have brought my pets here for a number of health conditions and they have ALWAYS been extremely helpful, and treated me and my pets wonderfully. Over the years, they’ve treated one rabbit for ~3 years with chronic dental disease and helped him through numerous abscesses. They spayed another rabbit that a different clinic attempted to spay but was unable to because she didn’t do well without intubation (OVC always intubates rabbits, as they SHOULD, but not all vets do). They diagnosed one of my dogs in late stage cancer and were very compassionate and helpful when explaining what our options were (we ultimate had to euthanize her). And most recently, they have been working with me to help diagnose my puppy with a rare neurological condition. We’re still working on this most recent diagnosis, because she has very unusual symptoms, but I’m confident that if anyone can figure it out, it’s OVC!
