The staff and veterinarian here were just amazing with our wee ratty, Luna. She was initially diagnosed with an infection, which was causing some difficulty for her in orientation. After treating her infection, she was diagnosed with a pituitary tumour. The vet was gentle and caring with Luna and with us. Gave us great options for her care, while also keeping things as affordable as possible. Sadly, our rat passed away this morning, knowing she was loved and well cared-for.

I'm not much of a review writer but I want to recognize Dr. Rai and his whole team at Downey Animal Hospital for the outstanding care we received over the past week. If you're ever in a situation where you need an emergency vet, this is absolutely the place to go. 5 stars just isn't enough.... We had to bring our 2 year old golden retriever in early on Family Day Monday after she hadn't eaten anything for the whole weekend and had been getting sick. We actually went to another vet first (at 1AM that morning) and it was not a positive experience. The vet we met with seemed annoyed to be there, he insisted on taking X-rays that were blurry and didn't give us any information and he gave our dog everything he could think of without explaining why she needed it. The worst part was that after taking the dog away to administer the medication, he didn't return with her to answer our questions and instead, had the VT give us our bill and send us on our way at 2AM. This doctor took advantage of us when we were scared and desperate and I'll never forget the helpless feeling of leaving the vet that morning with a dog that had to be carried into the car. $800 spent in 45 minutes with absolutely no answers or even ideas of what might be wrong with her. This veterinarian DIDN'T CARE! Our dog was even worse in the morning and could barely lift up her head. I called Downey Animal Hospital and was immediately connected to Dr. Ravi Rai. We met with him shortly after the phone call and I immediately felt that I was in better hands. He explained that the situation was very serious and that he was going to do everything he could to save our dog, and that he did, and more. He admitted her into the hospital right away and monitored her closely for 24 hours (with the hope that surgery could be avoided). Unfortunately we had to make the call to do the surgery the next day. Dr. Rai gave me the option to go to the University or have the surgery done at Downey. He explained the costs very clearly to me and ensured that I fully understood the procedure and the risks associated with this surgery. I felt very confident leaving her in his care and I received a phone call 3 hours later that the obstruction in her intestine had been removed and she was expected to be OK. After the surgery, she remained on an IV with antibiotics and pain medication. Dr. Rai and his team went ABOVE AND BEYOND to ensure our dog was comfortable and that we were kept in the loop all along. Dr. Rai was coming in in the middle of the night to check on her and make sure she was comfortable. He also told me to visit as often as I wanted and for the whole week she was there, I was stopping in 2-3 times per day to visit her, always greeted with smiles from the whole staff and welcomed right into the back to see our dog. When we finally knew that she was in the clear, Dr. Rai told me I should go home and get some sleep and that he needed to do the same because he hadn't slept much for 3 days either. Dr. Rai cares more about animals than anyone I've ever met. It was an awful experience not knowing if our dog would make it but we didn't doubt Dr. Rai and his team once. I learned the hard way that there are vet clinics out there that take advantage of desperate people like myself. When I received the final invoice from Downey - which included 4 nights care, antibiotics, pain medication, IV, SURGERY and so much more, it wasn't significantly more than my bill from earlier that week for 45 minutes in the middle of the night. They had even included "complimentary nail trim" and not even mentioned it. Downey Animal Hospital is an outstanding vet offering a level of care that's unbeatable. I feel very lucky to have a healthy and happy dog again and I am so grateful to Dr. Rai and his whole team!

ATTENTION STUDENTS, GO HERE!!! I say this because the prices are genuinely unbeatable. What I have paid here is less than half of what i have paid for similar services at other places in the past. But pricing is only one thing that this hospital has going for them, they are extremely knowledgable, extremely friendly and most importantly in my eyes, they're here for the animals. Some vets you can just tell aren't as interested in the animals as they should be, but this isn't the case here at all. They treat both my cat and my snake with the best intentions at heart and that's why I will continue going here for as long as I can! Not to mention they're super fast! I had a great experience at Downey Animal Hospital... I took my two six month old golden retrievers to the clinic to be spayed in January. I arrived early before the clinic even opened to drop off and Judy still greeted me cheerfully when she arrived to open and invited the dogs and I in. Check-in was done quickly and efficiently and I was off to work in no time. The area the girls were kept in was extremely clean and warm and they had big comfortable pillows to sleep on. The clinic itself is clean, bright and well equipped. I got a courtesty call from the veterinarian to let me know about their blood results and from the support staff once the girls were out of surgery with a time I could pick them up. When I arrived to pick them up they were in very good shape and happy to see me. The girls both healed without incident we had no problems at all with the incisions. All the staff I dealt with were helpful and very nice to the dogs...and to me too!

They actually did treat me and my pet like they care for him. It is the small things that make a difference. I’ve been to 2 other vet places prior and this one is the best by far. Vet visits stress out pets. Here I actually felt like they did sympathize fully and want my pet have the best possible experience. Dr. Rai was willing to see our dog last minute after she ingested something she should not have and our vet did not have the required medication to treat her. Dr. Rai was truly fantastic! We called the office right when they opened on a Sunday morning when we noticed our beloved rabbit wasn't eating. They had us come in immediately for an emergency appointment. We were greeted at the front desk by the very polite and helpful receptionist, and were brought into a room pretty much right away. The doctor came in and handled our rabbit very gently. After performing an exam, he knew exactly what the issue was. Our rabbit had stopped eating and the doctor needed to administer fluids subcutaneously. The doctor did a fantastic job of educating us on what was wrong with the rabbit, and answered every question we had. He was extremely personable and provided us with medication to treat the rabbit. Finally, he said he would call us within a few days to check up on our rabbit. A few days later we receive a call from the doctor himself! At the most, we expected a call from the receptionist. This is a doctor who really cares! A month later, we received a post card in the mail wishing us and our pet rabbit well. This is also the most reasonably priced office we have been to. Even though we called the office for an emergency appointment, they only had us pay for a standard appointment, plus the cost of the treatment medication! Between the lovely office, extremely knowledgable doctor, and providing a follow-up call, we can say with absolute certainty that this is the best vet we have taken our rabbit to!

Was very happy with the service I received today. It was an emergency visit on the holiday Monday and they met me at the office within 20 minutes. They gave me an estimate beforehand which was very helpful so there was no surprises. I was reassured that no matter what, there were options and worst case scenario, there would be financial options available to ensure treatment. Fingers crossed that the situation resolves itself overnight, but will know more tomorrow. Regardless, this will be my regular veterinary office from now on

My family has had nothing but amazing experiences with Dr. Rai at the Downey Animal Hospital. He is the single most caring and loving vet I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. He knows all of his patients and it is immediately apparent that this man loves all animals. Furthermore, he and his awesome staff helped us through a complicated administrative process (we moved out of Canada and had to complete a lot of paperwork and satisfy the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to get our pets cleared). They managed to do so much for us while following all COVID related regulations and we are eternally grateful! If you are looking for the hands down best vet in Guelph, this is the place. And to boot, they are not even close to being the most expensive vet clinic in this city. Check them out!

They are so kind and very welcoming to my dog and myself. The doctor will get down to his level and make sure he is comfortable before proceeding. My pup has had alot of issues and I was worried to bring him back a few days after surgery as I thought I would get tagged with another charge. Dr. Ravi had us come in to take a look with no charge just to reassure me and never made me feel annoying. I leave with a smile on my face everytime I am there.

The staff is incredibly responsive, friendly and patient. We've had to spring last minute requests to them as a result of needing to travel with pets and they did everything to calm us down and ensure everything will get done. All the staff are very kind to all my animals when I have brought them in. You can clearly tell how much Dr. Rai loves his job and loves the animals. I have had to use the emergency services at this clinic multiple times and Dr. Rai is always just a phone call away, it is very comforting knowing he will always come to the clinic after hours to help. We can’t thank enough Dr. Rai and his staff for saving the life and then for the great care he provided for our cat, Basil ! First of all, when I called for an appointment, I was able to get one the same afternoon . When we arrived with the cat, dr. Rai identified immediately that there may be a medical emergency, and he explained why it’s best to do an X-Ray, to make sure we know what we’re dealing with. Basil’s emergency ( blocked urethra) was addressed the same evening , the doctor and one of the assistants performed the surgery late that night , then Basil stayed for 3 nights in the hospital. We were actually encouraged to come and visit the next day , and Basil was doing great . Dr. Rai recommended he stays in the hospital 2 more nights, to ensure everything is ok . All in all, dr. Rai and the wonderful ladies from the Downey Animal Hospital took an excellent care of our pet , and I might add that not only from medical point of view : the proof, Basil DID NOT give us the cold shoulder after coming back home from his stay at the Downey Animal Hospital, and moreover, when we brought him back for a check -up, he was ok and didn’t try to hide when dr. Rai entered the room …. All who have cats know that they express very clearly when they are either afraid, or they don’t like someone …. and this was NOT the case with our fussy pet in this instance  Also, the costs for the care at the Downey Animal Hospital are reasonable : as an example, we paid for surgery plus 3 nights stay the same as for surgery + 2 nights hospital stay in a different hospital …. And the most important thing , after we brought back our cat from his emergency surgery and 3 nights stay in hospital , WE DID NOT NEED to take him back again to the hospital because his problem was not fully solved – as our experience has been previously with another hospital …. Dr. Rai followed up with us with recommendations for a special diet for Basil , and at the same time he did not try to convince us to buy unnecessary medication ,actually quite the opposite . Can’t say enough good things about dr. Rai’s professional ethics as well , we were extremely pleasantly impressed !!! Thank you very much dr. Rai and Downey Animal Hospital Staff for your help with Basil !

I was very disappointed with our visit to Downey Road animal Clinic. It is my understanding that a vet should learn first and foremost how to give a vaccincation. It should not take 15 minutes, 3 tries and a switching of needles to get the the shots into a 7 lb puppy who wasn't moving. I found the vet to be personally unkept and the language barrier a problem. I would not reccommend this clinic to anyone.

I would like to share the wonderful experience my in-laws had with Downey Animal Hospital. Here is the message they asked me to leave: We would like to express our enormous appreciation to Dr. Ravi Rai for saving our kitten’s life. Thank you doctor for your great work and compassion. We would recommend your hospital to everyone. On May 29th, 2016, we took our 11 month old kitten, Hobbes, to Oakville Emergency Animal Hospital since she vomited a couple of times throughout the day. They performed an X Ray and indicated that she needed surgery because she swallowed an unidentified soft object. Her intestines were inflamed and enlarged. We couldn’t afford to leave her in Emergency Oakville Hospital (they charge usually twice as much as a regular vet). With the help of our friend we found Downey Animal Hospital in Guelph. We contacted Dr. Ravi Rai on Sunday. Next morning on Monday May 31, we brought her to his hospital where they performed the surgery. They found a big piece of a plastic bag stuck in her intestine. Her recovery was challenging but with the help of Downey Animal Hospital, finally she is doing great. She is eating on her own and her energy has come back. She is still under a couple different medications. We are very thankful for the great care, patience, and the time spent with us before and after the surgery. DO NOT TRUST THEM WITH YOUR FERRETS I called Downey Animal Hospital to make an appointment for my 3 baby ferrets. I asked whether they had a ferret-savy vet and both the receptionist confirmed and the website said they had experience with ferrets. When we arrived for our appointment, the ferrets were escorted to the back of the clinic and we weren't told anything. I expected an explanation regarding COVID-19 protocols and this was why they were in the back of the clinic without us, but was confused when a dog owner was escorted into a private room. When my ferrets returned with the vet, the vet simply asked us if we had any questions. He didn't update us about the ferrets' weight, overall health or anything. As a new ferret owner, I asked a couple of beginner type questions about their health/behaviour/diet but was met with confusing answers. Basically he admitted he didn't see ferrets often and would need to do some research on their diet and any behaviour questions were met with "well it's common sense". I had to inquire about their current health to be given a very general answer: "they're fine" and inquire about whether they even received their vaccine: "Yep". He felt very impatient and very impersonal and almost didn't want to answer any more questions. In the middle of answering one he starts to walk away and says "if that's all, I'll be going" without actually letting me answer. I had to ask the receptionist if we should expect any adverse side effects to the vaccination since he didn't even mention it. I was very unsatisfied with this visit and his lack of expertise with ferrets that I called Campus Estates to set up a followup appointment. During our visit with Campus Estates we learned that ferrets usually have very adverse side effects to vaccinations and should remain at the vet clinic to be monitored for at least 30 minutes and then monitored at home for at least 24 hours. I am infuriated that Downey Animal Hospital NEVER MENTIONED THIS. My ferrets health was on the line and rather than being professional and knowing about ferrets health when they accepted our appointment, they rushed us out the door without letting us know that our ferrets could have died on the way home. DO NOT TRUST YOUR FERRETS WITH THIS VET

Dr.Rai and Mikayla, the vet tech, are some of the most humble, caring and compassionate people I have ever met. Recently I have had to put down my two beloved childhood cats, and while that experience is an overall negative one, Dr.Rai and Mikayla have made the process easier to deal with and in someways made it pleasant. I elected in both cases to use their at-home service, I knew it would be more expensive than going to the clinic, but for everyone it was easier to do it at home. Within an hour of my call to the clinic they arrived at my house and entered with a respectable demeanour, I could tell that they took this part of their job very seriously. They explained the procedure, gave us time to say our goodbyes and only progressed with the procedure when we were fully ready, never making me feel rushed or pressured. After the procedure they gave us time to let go, while they waited in their car outside, only coming in when we were ready. They never pressured us for payment or how we wanted the remains dealt with, in fact they waited for almost a week for me to come into the clinic and deal with the business side of things. Even then I never felt like I would be pressured to deal with that until I was. I really cannot express how grateful and indebted to them for how well they treated my animals and myself throughout this whole process. I will forever be a client with my future animals. 5 stars is not enough of rating for this clinic.

It was our first visit with our 6 yr old, very high energy, boxer. The atmosphere and staff were warm and welcoming. The vet was thorough in his exam and he provided just the right treatment. We have prior experience with another animal clinic where we spent $1400 in tests and over night stays, when the final solution was just antibiotic.

We took our older dog in to get fixed and all the girls there are great, knowledgeable and very friendly. I also phoned around for pricing and Downey Animal hospital was by far the most reasonable. I would definitely recommend!

We stumbled across Downey Animal Hospital when desperately searching for a second opinion about one of our dogs. We had become frustrated with our current clinic who kept telling us the same thing was wrong and pushing more and more of the same medication that just wasnt working. Dr. Rai and his team were amazing, they spend countless number of hours trying to figure out exactly what was wrong with our girl. Running an animal rescue, we rely on our vet to help us give the best care and that is exactly what we got when we walked in. Its wonderful to have a vet clinic who is dedicated to the animals, who answers and explains everything in detail over and over again until we are 100% confident that we understand. Most clinics have very strict hours and refer to a after hours clinic once the doors are closed. Not Downey Animal Hospital. No matter what time we call, we get help, doors get opened and our animals receive the care they deserve day or night. Any animal we have brought in have been 100% comfortable the second they walk in, even the animals who have trust issues. We will never go to another clinic again, no matter what. Fair prices, amazing service. If your looking for a new clinic, or just want the best one for your beloved family members, Downey Animal Hospital is the one for you!

Had a great experience with Downey Animal Hospital! The clinic was recommended to me by a few friends of mine and I was very pleased with their service. Their 24/7 Emergency Line and house calls are very helpful, especially for where I live. I have been with quite a few clinics in the area, Dr. Rai has a plethora of practical experience and takes the time to explain things to you, coming from an academic background myself I was impressed to find out he held a PhD. The staff was very honest and their pricing was far beyond fair. I dont usually make reviews but I think they deserved it, but dont listen to me, give them a try and see for yourself!

Dr. Rai was amazing!!! We rescued a little cat today and wanted to have her checked out before bringing her home to our fur family. He made time to see us same day and he was incredible with her.
