I came by chance upon Dr. Spence and this animal hospital full of care and empathy last year when my Daisy started having seizures and was diagnosed with diabetes. I can't tell you how fortunate we both were to have found this haven for animal care. Sadly, my Daisy's time on earth had come to an end, and Dr. Erin Spence helped me through what was the hardest thing I've ever had to do. That was 8 weeks ago and I think about it every day. We brought our 15 year old cat to Dr. Spence and her clinic after having a very poor experience at another vet clinic in Etobicoke. From the moment of booking our first appointment, we knew this was going to be a wonderful place to care for our cat. All of her staff are lovely and friendly and helpful, and Dr. Spence herself is a superb veterinarian and amazingly caring person. We didn't feel the least bit rushed as she took all of the time necessary to do a thorough assessment and answer all of our many questions. Her demeanor with our cat was that of someone who genuinely likes animals (casually stroking our cat's head as we discussed all of our options) as opposed to many vets who seem to only feign interest in the animals they are caring for. We subsequently went back for two follow-up appointments at no additional charge (beyond any additional tests and medications obviously, but the visits themselves were free) and continued to have a great experience. Our cat is now healthier than she has been in years and we are so thankful of Dr. Spence and our experience. We've had 6 or 7 vets over the years (in various cities in Ontario and neighbourhoods in Toronto) and this is by far the best we've been to. Pricing is competitive with most others and the fact that followup visits are free is a huge bonus! The facility is small but very well maintained and the staff actually take the time to do a thorough exam room cleaning and change blankets between animals. Don't hesitate to take your pets there, you won't be disappointed and will receive excellent care.

We brought in our frenchie puppy for our first vet visit today at 12 weeks. The initial receptionist that answered my questions on the phone to make the appointment was very informative and knowledgable. She was happy to share pricing information before going ahead with booking the appt. When we arrived today we were greeted happily and Ruby was treated like a VIP. All the staff were super friendly and showed her lots of love. Dr Spencer Burley was fantastic and took his time to answer all questions and fill us in on how the shots work and gave us a ton of information. He was great with Ruby and was able to keep her calm through the whole process. We will be returning and highly recommend Islington Village Animal Hospital

I'm a first time pet mama and the IVAH staff has been wonderful in explaining things and helping me with all sorts of random questions. I adopted a kitten, whose parents were feral, back in September and I wanted to make sure she was looked after properly, so I asked around and read reviews - a lot of reviews. Islington Village Animal Hospital had a great reputation so that's where I took my kitten. Lola's been seen by both vets since I got her, most recently by Dr. Spence. I was in a panic over my Lola's eye; Dr. Spence and staff were awesome, finding time to see her that day and calm me down. I'd recommend them to anyone with a pet. Thanks guys!

I have been taking my pets to Islington Village for more than 6 years now. Dr. Spence, Dr. Hume, Dr. Burley, and now Dr Garrett - are all excellent. I trust all of them! They have excellent rapport with the dogs, are thorough, knowledgeable, thoughtful, practical and very responsive - they have always provided me and my dogs excellent service. The staff are friendly and over the years I have referred many friends and family members to this clinic for their fur babies and everyone is pleased and now regular patients here. Some are travelling quite a distance too - which in my view speaks volumes. Prior to going to this clinic I had tried mulitple clinics in Etobicoke - this is by far the BEST. A truly wonderful team!

I am happy to finally find great vet for my cats. We had a great experience, one of my kittens undergo neutering surgery, we received so much love and care, doctor called us next day to make sure kitty is fine. All staff members are really nice , we get reminders and emails in time, prices are great. No one is pushing you to buy specialty foods, vitamins, supplements, to do unnecessary tests or vaccines, and not making you feel guilty for not buying them (like most other vets do). I am happy, my pets are happy.

I've been taking all 5 of my kitties to see Dr. Spence since the opening in 2010. The day of our first visit one of my cats had gotten his head stuck in a horrible carrier. After an emotional time trying to get him free, I called Dr. Spence and said I wasn't able to come. She came by my house to make sure my kitty was OK and had no damage. From dealing with my chunky kitty to my previously ring wormed polydactyle, I'll never go anywhere else. In all our visits, she's been very honest and minimalist. No unnecessary tests or options just because. Our most recent visit was with Dr. Garrett, and due to COVID restrictions, everything was discussed over the phone, but he seemed very professional and enthusiastic. I see no reason why we'll go anywhere else, for both of our current dogs, and any future animals.

It was absolutely not the flu and my pup almost died over the weekend until I took her to emergency. If i could give this office less than one star, I would.

Really great vet. The first time we used IVAH was due to an emergency - I called Erin early in the morning and she told me to bring our cat right over. She diagnosed the problem immediately (urine crystals) and after a brief overnight stay, our cat was back to his normal meowy, gluttonous self. Erin and the rest of her staff are really nice and friendly. They earned our patronage after the incident described above and we've been using them ever since (~2 years). Their services are very reasonably priced unlike the other yuppie boutique vets we've used downtown. They're not pushy about "mandatory" visits but rather send nice e-mail reminders to let you know what type vaccinations and check-ups your pet may need. Keep up the good work.

I have an indoor cat (over 19), and when he turned 16 a couple years ago, I needed to find a west end vet for the first time. Reviews of IVAH sounded good, but I am an over-protective cat-dad, so I still had reservations. I should not have. As my little guy has aged (and his health declined), we were in and out for different geriatric cat treatments; dental care, pain meds for arthritis, annual physicals, etc. In this time, I have dealt with multiple vets and techs at IVAH - and can honestly say I have been beyond satisfied with their level of care and professionalism. For anyone looking for high quality care from compassionate people, you will find it at IVAH.

(It doesn’t require a prescription but most vets wouldn’t have just helped me out like that - I had dropped our previous bottle on the floor and couldn’t get to our regular vet to replace it.) Great vibes in the office, staff all super-friendly - will definitely be taking our dog here from now on. Recommended. Big thanks as well to a rockstar team - Lis, Andrea, Linh (who offered up her time to help me understand the deworming process when I called multiple times in a panic), and I believe there is Molly as well. Their use of technology to ensure a smooth customer experience is impressive as well. Definitely helps them stay competitive with other clinics nearby. Post-it notes with your next appointment? Not a thing here. You get an email confirmation with every appointment booked, a reminder email, AND all invoices emailed. If you're looking for a team that genuinely cares for you as their customer, and your furry friend - look no further. If I moved away from Etobicoke, I'd still do my best to go here. That says a lot.

I wish that I could give the Islington Village Animal Hospital and all of it's staff 10 stars. From my very first call, it has been a very supportive, helpful, and loving experience. My fur baby George was sick and getting old. I had taken her to another clinic for her care before this point but was looking for a more loving environment. Well, we definitely found it. George was quickly losing weight and starting not to eat among several other issues. She never liked being assessed by a veterinarian and appointments would usually be quite stressful for her, myself and the vet until we met Dr. Spencer Burley. She seemed to be instantly comfortable around him and let him do whatever he needed to do to help her. Blood test results did not come back with the best of results and a couple days later George seemed ready to pass on. The problem was that I found this out around 5pm Friday when I came home from work and the Hospital closes at 6pm. Dr. Burley called me after he finished with his last patient and the hospital was closed. I would have preferred that he do the procedure since she was so comfortable with him but I did not think she could make it through the weekend and unfortunately his next appointment wouldn't be until Monday. Following one short hold, Dr. Burley asked me if I could bring George in right away and they would keep the hospital open for us. Once we arrived, we were shown to the appointment room and it was clear that George was not enjoying her time here anymore. Dr. Burley gently explained what would happen and gave me as much time as I needed to say good bye. The whole process did not take long and soon my fur baby was gone. I was (and still am) heartbroken and Dr. Burley and other staff let me stay as long as I needed to. I am so thankful for everything they did for us on one of the worst days of my life! Since then I've had a hard time dealing with the fact that my side kick has passed on. Today I received a beautifully detailed condolence card from Dr. Burley himself. He already went above and beyond for me and my baby girl and now even more so. I cannot thank Dr. Burley enough for everything he did and for being such a loving and caring veterinarian. We are so blessed to have found you when we did and I will be back in the future with my other fur baby. If you want the best care for you furry family members, I strongly suggest you go to the Islington Village Animal Hospital and Dr. Burley in particular though I am more than confident that every veterinarian on staff is amazing! Thank you again from the bottom of my heart for everything!

I could not love this place more. I discovered this clinic when going through a tough time with my last cat and Dr. Spence was absolutely wonderful. She made me feel comfortable during a difficult time, never tried to push anything I didn't want, and took the time to explain anything and everything to me. Fast forward a year and a bit later with 2 new fur babies in the family and this is still the only vet clinic I would ever considering bringing our pets to. My partner and I started going here when we got our first dog (we also brought in our bunny in). Dr. Hume is absolutely fantastic and my absolute favourite. We had a few negative experiences in the past at other vet clinics and were quite hesitant with trying out a new one. We didn't want to go to one which was too pushy and would guilt trip you into spending too much money on unnecessary procedures. Dr. Hume made us feel very comfortable and not once did she pressure us into doing anything we did not feel comfortable doing. She also has gone above and beyond trying to help us figure out our dog's recent "mystery" diagnosis and makes sure that she involves us very closely in developing a plan of care for our not-so-little guy. We are very thankful for her and Dr. Burley, Dr. Spence and the vet techs!. They rock! Oh and Blue is the cutest creature in the world <3

Such a great find. I feel very lucky to have found these guys and have been going with my cat, Meezie, since she was a kitten (now roughly 2 years old). The entire staff works extremely well with pets and is exactly what I’ve always been looking for in a clinic. Communicates extremely well what their treatment plan is with pros/ cons and the various options so it’s easy to make decisions that don’t have surprises, just outcomes. The bills are always very reasonable (hesitant to use the word cheap but it’s always less than what I’m expecting it to be given the work being done). The clinic is new, very clean but comfortable. have been to a number of different Vet’s looking to find the best care for my senior cat. I honestly believe that I have found the best clinic in the city. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable and caring. Every time I had an issue with my old boy I would get daily follow up calls asking for updates or to just discuss the situation and providing recommendations. They genuinely care and always handled him in the most gentle and calming manner. They outline all options and cost and have never pressured me into a more costly solution Once I sent a picture of a cat that had a medical issue from a friend in the USA that was suspicious of some of the advice she was getting. Dr Hume wrote back to me in less than 30 minutes with her thoughts in well thought out thorough email. I have to utmost respect for her and all the staff. If you want the absolute best care for your furry family member look no further, because there is no one better!!

I've had great experiences with all of the vets, techs and staff at this practice over the years, but I want to give particular mention to Annie, Dr. Garrett, and Dr. Hume. Their compassionate care of my cat Noogi saved his life, and enabled him to regain his health after an intestinal illness. He was so lethargic and ill that we initially didn't think he was going to make it, but Dr. Hume encouraged us to do an ultrasound (in the least pressuring way possible) and I'm so glad we did as that decision turned his life around. From this point, right up until a month following his surgery, the staff checked in about his condition and my husband and I could feel the genuine concern for Noogi's well being rather than him just being another patient. 3 months following his surgery, Noogi is the healthiest he has ever been. He's a good weight, eats well on his special diet and is bursting with so much energy he wants to play constantly. All thanks to Islington Village!

This clinic is unlike any other I have dealt with. I've visited 4 different clinics prior to this one and none of them compare. The staff is unbelievably empathetic and compassionate. Dr. Spencer Burley is amazing.. I had to put my cat down and he was just so down to earth and so nice.. I've never had a vet really take the time to understand my story and my fur baby's story. He listened. He understood. He gave me reassurance. His bedside manner is incredible. He also took the time to send my family and I a hand written personal note to give us some hope as we cope with our loss. Who does that? No one! Take it from me.. souls like his are so rare. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to meet him and that my cat Leo went peacefully under his care. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart. I will only recommend this clinic to my friends and family.

I don’t usually leave google reviews but this one is a little overdue as every interaction I have with this veterinary hospital has been amazing. I brought my small senior dog in for a very last minute emergency appointment as she was extremely lethargic and was not herself at all. She’s an unspayed senior dog with mammary abscesses. This unfortunately means she’s prone to infections. I brought her to this hospital in a panic and despite how frantic and last minute my visit was, the vet techs were nothing short of amazing and compassionate. They squeezed me in for an appointment not too long from when I dropped in unexpectedly. I then met Dr. Garrett, who similarly to the staff, was also very compassionate and comforting. He laid out all of my options clearly and genuinely wanted to do what would be best for my dog. He tailored her medication and treatment very carefully, considering her age and condition, which I appreciated. It has now been approximately 2-3 months since our visit and unfortunately my dog experienced an infection again a few nights ago. Due to the fact that it was the weekend and around midnight, I had to take her to emergency hospital. They took care of her and all was well but the reason I’m bringing this up is because I also gave Islington Village a call to just ask a technical question about cleaning my dog’s abscesses and Dr. Garrett took the time to give me a call to check up on my dog and talk about her recent emergency visit. He took his time and gave me more insight on her condition despite us not even coming in for a visit. I know this is probably a long winded review but I know that when I google veterinary hospitals, I appreciate detailed reviews to know what I’m walking into. Long story short, if you’re looking for a very caring veterinary hospital who genuinely looks out for their patients, this is it!

I have a very shy, skittish young calico female cat and I really appreciate the thoughtfulness that we were shown by the staff. As quickly as possible we were put in an examining room and the door was closed to minimize strange noises and bodies. When Dr Spence wanted to examine the cat she moved slowly, gently, stroking her to try and alarm the cat as little as possible. I've been fortunate to not require many visits to vets with my cats, but my "baby" was having some issues that required a trip to the emergency clinic. I was lukewarm with the past vet I had used and the emerg clinic told me to check out a vet rating site which is how I ended up coming to Islington Village for the follow-up visits. I am totally satisfied, Willow has been seen by both vets, Dr. Spence and Dr. Hickman. I didn't feel rushed and I have been called at home for follow-up. Their care is gentle and concerned. The staff is very friendly. Glad I made the move! We were back to see Dr. Hickman two weeks ago for Willow. A sudden issue with breathing which may have been caused by cancer that might have been developing for awhile. Dr. Hickman was kind and gentle. We had to go to the emerg clinic for the oxygen cage and more tests and sadly had to have Willow put to sleep. Love you to the moon and back, Willow, forever. I adopted a new cat four days later, Bailey, and will be in to see you with him when he's due for checkup.

Even ignoring the contrast when comparing Islington Village Animal Hospital to my previous vet (which feels like we have moved from a tent in the woods to a 5-star hotel), every visit to date has been a pleasant experience. My 3 month puppy had a swollen eye that was pretty bad they took me in right away! I was really scared about the eye. Dr. Erin Spence is a vet that I truly trust with both of my cats well being. I left a vet that seemed to push unnecessary, expensive surgeries for my cats that really were not needed. Last December, my cat Rajah got really sick from a bad can of wet food. He wouldn't eat for days, he was drooling intensely and looked like he was in so much pain. They worked with him over days, having to resort to surgery where they found his intestines were very swollen. They took the bile and bad food out and gave me medicine to give him. He healed really well and I am so grateful that Dr. Erin Spence and her team was there, I really feared that he would not make it. Not only have they dealt with emergencies, our other cat, lily, has hyperthyroidism and asthma. They consistently help keep these disorders in check with blood tests, medication and puffers. She is 15 and still going strong. Really happy to have a vet that cares about my pet's health and wellbeing and is always there for guidance.

I have been very happy after every visit at IVAH. I started taking my first cat here 3 years ago and, even though we now live downtown, I still take both of my cats here. Dr. Spence has always been accomodating and answers every question to the best of her abilities.. she's great and I have never had any issues. I also just had an appt with Dr. Burley and he exceeded my expectations completely! All the vets are so great.. great personalities and you can tell that they truly care about the animals in their care ???? I would say prices are definitely affordable compared to other vets in the city as well. Islington Village Animal Hospital.I have a nineteen year old cat Maxwell and a three year old black lab Sadie. It is very organized- you park in a numbered space out front so they can easily identify you. I have brought my dog here since 2015 and will continue. Dr. Hume is very knowledgeable and truly cares about my dog. She has a caring and compassionate approach and shows a genuine interest in the welfare of Benjamin. My dog is ill with heart disease and Dr. Hume follows up with me regularly to see how he is doing. I drive 1 and a 1/2 hours to go there since a recent move. It is a convenient location and I never have trouble with parking. I recommend this clinic with pleasure!!

Excellent hospital, fantastic care and customer service. I recently switched my 9 month old puppy to the clinic. I got an appointment within a couple of days. The wait was only a few minutes when we got there. Our first exam was with Dr. Hume who was incredibly kind, knowledgeable and patient. A week after that my puppy got very sick and was vomiting excessively. They took him in right away, examined him and it was determined that he had an abdominal blockage. They performed the surgery right away and took incredible care of him. Dr. Spense kept me informed with everything that was happening and I was confident he was in good hands. Phaedra is also absolutely fantastic. She took the time to take all my calls and answer all my questions. I can't thank the entire team at Islington Village Animal Hospital for taking such good care of my little man and for being so kind to me. I definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a vet. Thank you to the team, they are very friendly and took the time to sit with me to answer my questions regarding both my pets - a 10 year old Jack Russell cross (Riley) and a 6 year old Jack Russell cross (Max). Prior to our initial visit, Andria, the Practice Manager, answered my questions via email in a timely fashion. I left their office very comfortable/satisfied with the information I received and the treatment plan we discussed. Both pets received a thorough hands on exam, along with their annual vaccinations. At the end of the visit I was surprised to find out that the cost of going to the vet annually with two dogs was no different than it was in Spruce Grove Alberta. Good value! Both Riley & Max left with report cards with their pictures on it and a squeaky toy each for the ride home. Moving to a new province can be daunting enough, coupled with finding healthcare for all involved even more so, Dr. Spence and Practice Manager Andria made the transition to a new vet much easier than what I had thought it was going to be like. Wouldn’t you just assume that being compassionate and caring are probably the most important traits anyone that works in health “care” should have ? Especially working at a vet that supposedly “cares” for your loved pet ? Today i made the mistake of confusing the working hours of the clinic so i showed up 20 mins after they closed to pick up my dog’s prescribed hypoallergenic food because i ran out and he has nothing to eat (again a mistake for me to leave it to last minute). I got to the clinic, the door was locked but people were still inside so i was super happy that i will be able to pick up food for my dog. My dog is super allergic with digestion issues so I really had no options (partly because the vet that works there never helped me figure out what’s wrong with him but that’s another story) A lady opened the door for me and I explained to her my situation and that I’m here to pick up food that i called 2 days ago to have set aside for me so nothing too hard really. She wouldn’t give me the food because the people that work the cash register have left for the day. I explained that I really didn’t have anything else that i can feed him but she still refused to let me buy the food. I said if its a problem of cashiers I’ll take the food and come back the next day to pay and she still refused. I spent hundreds of dollars at this clinic picking up this food for my dog because it’s the only thing he can eat. Regardless of this being my fault to begin with, the fact that they have a heart to let a dog not having anything to eat and be okay with me feeding him something that will most definitely hurt him is beyond me. With no doubt, i am never stepping foot there again. This is the most bizarre vet experience i have ever had. I left speechless. I don’t want an owner to reach out to me to apologize. I don’t want an owner to reach out to me to tell me they’ve talked to the staff and they will handle it better next time. You don’t talk people in to having common sense and empathy. Especially ones that their whole career is based on “caring” for animals. Just wanted to share this with everyone out there so you have a better judgment on how far this place is willing to go for your pet’s wellbeing :) After the response all I will say is keep running you “business” Erin, that was the one point I was trying to make :)

I have been going to this Vet for a couple of years now and the staff is incredibly friendly and great with my pup. I continue to rave about this place to any dog owners I know. Earlier this year we found out my morkie had cancer and the were beyond supportive. They walked me through what my options were, explained everything, did check ups via calls and genuinely cared about Juliets recovery. Safe to say she is cured and back to her happy self. Thank you Islington Village Animal Hospital & Dr Spence.. keep up the excellent work and know that your clients appreciate you!

Simply the best. My new fur baby has been coming here for about a year now and words cannot even describe how great this place is. If you are looking for a vet who genuinely cares about your pet, not just the money, this is the place for you. I wish I knew this vet earlier for my other two beloved dogs, whom I had the pleasure of having for the last 14 and 15 years of my life. I can't say more positive things about Islington Village Animal Hospital. I've been taking my standard poodle there since I got her. It feels like each member of the staff genuinely love animals and want what's best for them. Dr. Spence is knowledgeable and spends the time to get to know both you and your pet to give the best care possible. Today was the first time I've had to take my pup in for something other than her annual checkup as she broke her dew claw. Dr. Schuilenberg was fantastic, removing it in less than 5 minutes. I easily could have been told that she needed sedation to make it a more extensive (and more expensive) procedure, but like I said, this team really is in it for the animals, not the money. Would 100% recommend this clinic.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Garrett and Andria, who made a very hard good bye to our beloved dog Kelly one which was very peaceful and sympathetic. Words cannot describe how pleased I was with the service provided during this process, care and compassion from the amazing staff. Andria was very sweet, helpful, understanding and accommodating. Care has shifted from a focus on animals to a focus on money. Definitely not the same clinic as it was a few years ago (Im sure many 5 star reviews are from when things were different in the clinic). Keep this in mind when reviewing the ratings and deciding to take your fur baby there. It is not the same place anymore.

I have had pets all of my life and can honestly say that Islington Village Animal Hospital is by far the best Veterinary Clinic I have ever dealt with. I have two dogs and two cats who are lucky to have Dr. Spence as their Vet. Dr. Spence and her team (Andrea, Phaedra, Rikki & Amanda) are truly amazing. They make you and your pet feel very welcome and go beyond the call of duty. Dr. Spence takes time and care with each appointment to diagnosis my pets or to give them their annual check-ups. I never feel rushed at an appointment and she always gives me plenty of time to ask questions. Dr. Spence and her staff truly love animals and care about the health of your pet. I can't imagine taking my pets anywhere else.

This place is awesome! I've been taking my pets to IVAH for over two years now, and I'm not over exaggerating when i say my dog loves this place. He gets more excited for his vet visits than the park. My dog loves dr. Spence and the vet techs especially amanda and she genuinely loves him too which is awesome. All the staff is very knowledgable, friendly, helpful, and understanding. Everything I've mentioned makes me feel very safe when i leave my pets here and very confident in my choice of veterinary clinic. I highly recommend.

The price of the vet visit itself is a bit on the higher side but everything else from tests to medication is VERY reasonable. We've been to 4 different vets at this hospital and they've all been amazing and so nice. They never tell me I HAVE to do anything, they explain why we might need to do a test, or take a vaccine, or give medication but they never push for us to buy anything and always offer alternatives if I'm not comfortable. I've since moved to another province but I'll still make a stop to this vet whenever I'm back to visit. They even have the friendliest receptionists, and even guest cat receptionists that want all the pets. Lovely place :)
