I initially visited this clinic to continue seeing my previous vet, Dr Baer from the Heritage Cat Clinic. My initial visit with her was great. Yesterday, I went to see a different vet to check my cat’s condition, she has cancer, and to possibly put her down as she is rapidly declining. Although I mentioned this when I booked the appointment and the receptionist promised me the vet would examine her before making any decisions, as soon as we entered the examination room I was handed the release form for euthanasia. That didn’t leave a good impression.
After the examination of my cat, the vet explained the procedure for euthanizing pets. He said they would take my cat to the back room to sedate her and then provide the overdose of barbiturates in the examination room. I didn’t think of it at the time but afterwards I realized in the back room where they do the surgeries there are dogs. Which is not a very nice environment for the cat.
Anyway , I decided to do it. After my cat received the sedative she was not relaxed at all. In fact, she was more lively then before and she was scared. She tried hiding in the corners of the room, pressing her face right up against the wall. So I had to find an assistant and request more sedatives. I was told “well after the final shot she will pass away quickly. But if that’s not acceptable to you, we can sedate her again.” Of course that was not acceptable. So I asked for more. Again, she came back terrified. So I told them I was going to take my cat home. The assistant said the same thing to me! “Once the vet gives the final dose, it will be over quickly.”
Unfortunately, that’s not the point of euthanasia; the point of it is to let your pet die peacefully and be free from pain. NOT to scare the living daylights out of them and then finish them off. Lastly, to add insult to injury, they said “we will just charge you for the sedatives today not the examination fee.” Yes please charge me $135 for sedatives that didn’t work. And finally when I got my cat back from removing her catheter, the assistant said “keep an eye on her when you get home because she’ll be very agitated.” Why would she be agitated if you had really given her sedatives?
In conclusion, I do not recommend this vet. I regret going here. My cat has been hiding in the corner of my apartment and doesn’t come out. Our bond of trust is also ruined. Thank for making the last weeks of my cats life miserable instead of releasing her from the pain of abdominal cancer like you promised.
