The took a few minutes despite not having an appointment to look at it, see that it was not a tick but a probably benign growth to be checked out at a later date. I've had quite a few horrible experiences here with the attitude staff gives to their patients. I'll spare you all the details but I most definitely will never be taking my pup here again. I'd also like to point out the level of abuse their staff provides their personal animals. Never in my life have I seen such neglect! I've posted just a few photos I have of a litter box belonging to the cat that Carlie Gait cares for. You'll find them scattered throughout the google photos of this vet. If this is the kind of care that her personal pet receives. .. Then what is she doing to patients of this veterinary hospital? These are the kinds of people that Hillside Veterinary Hospital chooses to employ. I can't express my lack of trust for this establishment enough! Please, for your pet's sake, find a more suitable care facility.

My 14 year old female cat was having her annual check up. Skylee was taken into the back room for blood work, and a urine sample. Skylee was screaming, hissing, blood curdling screams and growling. Usually indicates fear and threat. They traumatized my cat when there was little wrong with her. By the time I was leaving they talked me into a Diabetes Panel for $282 in which was incomplete. They sent me home with a urine kit to take the urine sample myself. When I arrived home Skylee was acting out of sorts with anxiety, lethargy and making backward sneezing sounds in duress. The sounds were like a yowling noise. A sound that denotes worry and discomfort. I left the vet with a traumatized cat and an invoice for $408 for an incomplete job. I will never return! I pray that anyone who loves their animal will never go to Hillside Veterinary Hospital please....

I first came to this clinic about 5 years ago, new to Victoria and also to having a dog in my life. Raising a large breed dog with joint issues and fatty lumps (and and and... ) gave me the chance to appreciate just how wonderful this clinic is overall. At first I didn’t like having a new vet every time we visited but they are actually all amazing and I like having different views and opinions. Rhea in the rehabilitation centre is a gem both in person and in profession. The underwater treadmill is a key piece of equipment to have and paired with a team that knows and CARES about our dogs rehabilitation is worth its weight in gold! With the support of the rehab ladies and their connection with K-9 orthotics on the east coast my dog can now hike and walk like the good ol’ days, something I will forever be grateful for :)

I went here for an immediate appointment for my cat as he would not open his eye. When I called, the receptionist was very warm and friendly, when I got there, all of the front staff were welcoming. The vet was patient and caring. I want to address some of the responses on here about their prices. Now I have not had much experience, only 2 visits. They did cost $8 more for the visit then the vet I regularly went to. But my experience was 100% better, they followed up after the appointment to check on my cat. Then at the follow up appointment I had exactly the same pleasant thank experience! I will happily be paying the little bit of difference for both of my cats. The treatment my kitties and myself are very worth it!

We've been coming here here for several years and recently had our dog in for dental cleaning/surgery and I was extremely pleased by how responsive and communicative the team was. I had some pre-surgery concerns and Dr. Kristen took the time to phone me a couple times and run through everything in detail. She suggested a few additional pre-anesthesia measures we could take and they squeezed him in for a last minute x-ray to ensure there was nothing going on that would be cause for concern. The team at Hillside is hard working and very caring, and yes it's a busy clinic, but we always feel like we're a priority.

Accupuncture has been good here ... But everything else has been a nightmare, my dog was hit by a car Oct 03 2018 and we have been to three vets in victoria, McKenzie vet (regular) central Victoria (emergency) and Canada west (critical care in Burnaby) and I can say hillside vet is by far the worst place, they got two different invoices messed up going out to trupanion So I had to wait extra long for re emburments, they don't have direct billing and the reception is absolutely the rudest, my dog has been cleared and recommended to start doing hydrotherapy since he was at his 6 week mark of recovery were at almost 11 weeks .. and we'd been waiting about a month or longer just to hear back from they're 'specialized' doctor on getting an appointment so she can check him out and clear him herself? Even though his regular vet took x-rays and saw that he was good to go, after waiting a month just to hear back from this vet oshe got a hold of me over the phone, I tried to say no thank you I want to start ASAP it's crucial to his care and recovery she absolutely refused to book him in for hydro without being cleared and couldn't book me an appointment till middle to late January after we had already been waiting over a month, the only other place to go it chemanus for this type of therapy .. SO unless you absolutely HAVE to come to this vet I honestly wouldn't.. I've been to a few now and I know good treatment .. and so far this place has been very dissapointing.

Best vet office I've ever been to. They were very kind and gentle with both cats I've taken there. I've seen two different vets now at this office and have been very impressed by both of them, my mother has also brought one of her cats here and saw a different woman who she was impressed by as well. They knew what was wrong right away, blood tests confirmed what the one said. The more recent time I brought in a pet of mine she had a tapeworm, which I got a pill for and she's all better now. It was refreshing and reassuring to see vets that I could tell deeply cared about the animals they were treating. They were very informative and answered all other questioned I asked, and warned about other things I didn't know about. They also phoned to follow up and make sure that my cat had gotten better, which she has, and with the vets tips and she's also lost the extra weight (which wasn't too bad yet, but was getting there) and is more active and agile. The prices are more affordable than the other places I've been to and I recommend them to everyone I know. I hope that I never have to go to a different vet for as long as I live in this city!

Hillside Vet has caused a sudden decline in our beloved border collie leading to her death. She was given a medication which was to help with arthritis but the vet didn't bother to look over the bloodwork or consider existing contraindications. Receptionist wasn't much better, when I called in tears she showed less compassion than a robot. Now my best friend is gone and I'm left blaming myself for trusting the vet and not researching the med and asking for her the copy of bloodwork.

My regular vet is closed weekends, and my giant breed dog has either sprained or broken his hind paw. We just called to see if we could get him squeezed in today as he is struggling to use stairs and will not put any pressure on his paw. We left him overnight with ice and compression, but his condition didn’t improve much so we called Hillside Veterinary Hospital about 4 or 5 minutes ago to see if we could get him looked at today as the longer he limps,(and tires out) the chance of him getting hip displacia increases, something that should be known by a Veterinary Clinic. They didn’t bother to ask questions, or assist despite the fact that they were full today (understandable), and then hung up on us promptly. In my experience, I’d only ever use a VCA associated Vet like Shaw or Hollywood. They seem to have more consistent quality of service.(With the exception of the 24 hour Central Victoria location, which is chaotic as it’s an emergency facility) I’d also like to update this as of September 13: my dog ended up with a completely torn CCL and required TPLO surgery off-Island a bit more than a week after diagnosis. Had it not been for the thorough and caring action of other veterinary services, I doubt we would have gotten the same turnaround.

Will take my puppy (Boston Terrier) to an AAHA accredited vet where the practice has passed import and critical guidelines in pet care instead of trial and error. Small, caring veterinary clinic that offers owners peace of mind and practical advice, rather than excessive diagnostics or testing fees. We had a young dog who was found to be in congestive heart failure, and from the moment we took him in for first diagnosis to the moment he was finally at peace under euthanasia, Hillside's vets and techs were kind, knowledgeable, pragmatic, and sensitive to our needs. Now, with a young puppy in their care, we're seeing the same level of care and pragmatism. No unnecessary testing or bloodwork, lots of listening to us and offering advice when it's sought. These vets CARE about the animals, and will get down on the floor, or the sidewalk outside in the rain, if that's where your dog needs to be. They'll hand feed wet food to a sick pooch, play with a young and foolish one to distract it, and take all the time us humans need to talk things through. It's amazing care, and the bills are NEVER as high as I expected them to be. Great hours including full weekend hours, and a convenient app to let you manage your pet's healthcare more easily. We find they're great at processing insurance claims, and the front desk team is awesome at keeping everyone moving and ensuring we walk out with what we're supposed to have. The only negatives? The waiting area can be a bit cramped at times, and the back parking lot is quite tight for the few cars it can hold. But really, this is just a testament to the popularity of the clinic!

The secretary failed to advise me that my cat needed flea treatment at the same time as worming medication if I wanted the worming to be successful. This ensured that the next time I needed to get more worming medication (which would be only a few months after the treatment), I would be forced to pay the examination fee ($76) to have them weigh her again. Paying $76 to have my cat weighed is already exorbitant; to make sure that I'm trapped into doing that shows where their priorities are - money first, pet health second. I've seen a lot of happy dog owners both in the building and on these reviews; if you've got cash to burn it's probably a great place to do it.

I have had positive experiences in the past with this clinic and have always thought well of them, have enjoyed our time with the vet we see, but what has transpired the last few months has left a very bitter taste in my mouth. Preying on customers for as little as $41 is ridiculous, especially when our dog was healthy before she came in to your clinic. We brought our healthy dog in to get her shots on June 26th, 2019 and within three days she was hacking, and a lump was appearing on her thigh. We brushed it off, thinking it would go away, we gave her extra water and made sure to check the lump daily. Around three weeks later, nothing had changed. I insisted that we phone in so that they could have this on file, knowing it was a bad reaction to the vaccines she was given. I only wanted them to know it was happening. On the phone, we were told we had to bring her in so they could put this on her file. We were told that we could be reimbursed. We were told bringing her in for this followup would be 100% free. Okay, I needed this to be on file, so we came in at 9am on July 18th and were with the vet for no longer than fifteen minutes. She checked over our dog and told us that it was a reaction to the vaccines which we already knew, and gave some advice on how to make it go away quicker. Having been told it was free, we left through the backdoor that we came in through. We were out of there quickly with some tips, and the reconfirmation it was a bad reaction (a lump at the injection site from the rabies shot, and a hacking cough due to an irritated throat from the kennel cough vaccine). Well, now about three weeks later she is still sick despite us doing everything we've been told to do. But on top of that, the reason for the two-star, is they are trying to charge us for a "thirty minute follow up". The follow up we had, which did not last thirty minutes, we were assured would be free. I have no idea what changed but the business practises of then being told, "oh, if she's still sick you can bring her in NOW for free!" by the manager does not sit well with me. Even though our dog is still sick due to her reaction to the vaccines, she will not be returning. This vet clinic has lost us completely in this entire event and we will be looking for a new clinic in the future. Telling us you will "speak to the front end staff about a misunderstanding" is not enough. Continuing to make us pay this bill feels like a blatant cash grab and it makes me feel gross about the practises of a vet clinic that cares for the animals brought in to them. We were told we were bringing our dog in for a free follow up, and so the follow up should be free period.

We recently moved across Canada to Victoria. As part of any significant move there is a need to rebuild your health provider contacts and finding a new vet was among them. In our previous city we had a great vet who had cared for our beloved Bouvier, Koda, from birth to now age 12 (old for a Bouvier). We were not looking forward to the change. We found the Hillside vet based on reputation and made an appointment with one of its owners Dr. Chan. That’s when the magic began. Dr. Chan discovered, among other things, that our four-legged guy had developed a liver condition that was due to prolonged use of Steroids. This change away from his medication was significant and difficult but Dr. Chan was there for us every step of his recovery. She monitored, prescribed and continued to take an active interest in Koda until the problem was resolved. Even after his condition stabilized she would continue to call to check in on his condition, and where needed, suggest slight adjustments here and there to ensure Koda’s continued comfort. We were blown away by her compassion and interest. This is a person who was born to be a Vet. Dr. Chan is that doctor that you hope to meet when health concerns are present. She clearly is in the business to practice good medicine and be there for her patience and their families. The clinic itself is clean and welcoming and is staffed by very friendly people at the front desk who engage you in conversation, are efficient, professional and love to give out treats. Koda gives them a huge paws up! The Vet techs are also wonderful. Friendly, caring and highly competent. Clearly this is a clinic that is run by owners who have set the bar high for quality of service and treatment. We highly recommend the Hillside Veterinary Clinic and in particular Dr. Chan

Worst experience at a vet in my 21 years of owning pets. The vet forgot to give my dog the one vaccine and completely missed his mouth for the oral vaccine (and did not regive ). And up sold me on an expensive product I could not afford, I was shocked and flustered at such incompetence. The day after I summoned up the courage to call in. During my interaction with the "Hospital Manager" I was once again shocked by how cold and unaccommodating she was. Still waiting a return phone call. I can understand that mistakes happen, but how can there be no attempt to remedy it? This vet overcharges as it is, I spent $400 at my first visit, can they really not justify regiving one vaccine when it was done incorrectly the first time and they completely forgot about vaccinating for Rabies? if you care about your pets, stay as far away from the place as you can. Wish I would have done more home work before going here, seems like there are good amount of reviews where pets left sicker and actually passed away after receiving treatment here. If I could would give 0 stars, but not an option.

My cat has been a patient at Hillside vet for 4 years, and the staff have always been kind and accommodating. My cat is not always easy to deal with but they have taken it in stride. We recently moved away and before I could find a new vet my cat had some health concerns. Heartless. We are from out of town but were caught in Victoria with a 10-week old golden retriever pup who needed his second set of vaccinations: a single visit, not an ongoing patient situation. We explained the circumstances to the cold-sounding receptionist that our elderly mother was in a very concerning health decline in a nearby facility, meaning we could not leave the city for some days or a week or more. We were concerned the pup's vaccines might end up late. The receptionist refused to consider a single pup vaccination appointment over the upcoming days, simply stating, "We aren't accepting new patients unless you are referred by an existing client or another vet.". So, obviously they did have appointment space. She sent us and the pup away to find some other solution to our dilemma. Don't expect this group to make any exceptions for clients who are in a bind. Perhaps they have forgotten why they entered veterinary practice in the first place.

The staff and quality of service at the Hillside Veterinary Clinic are excellent. We never had just one vet assigned to Charley as each took great care and attention to his overall health for at least 10 years. In his last year, they gave us great advice and they always kept our needs and his in check. Recently, and for our toughest day, the team was exceptional sharing our pain and providing the support we needed. Their commitment didn’t end that day - they followed up with a card of genuine individual messages of sympathy signed by at least three vets...impressive. Judy and family.

They are very helpful but I am disappointed that vets no longer sell Revolution. I now have to pay for an appointment to get just one and it comes to the amount that I used to pay for one box which would last me for months and keep my cats healthy and flea free and dewormed. So I was forced to buy Advantage which isn't as good because it only covers fleas. A LOT OF PETS WILL SUFFER DUE TO THIS BECAUSE OF THE HIGH PRICES. This is just another way to force customers to HAVE TO MAKE VET APPOINTMENTS and SADLY many customers cannot keep up to the HIGH PRICES. It's NOT about helping animals, it's about MONEY. PETS can no longer get the help they really need. So sad

Took my dog there for a follow up after a trip to the emergency vet and during the exam the vet said he had really great teeth esp for his age, less than a month later he had to go back for a different reason and a different vet told us he needed $3000 in dental work! Obv one vet there is honest and another is crooked and only out for cash. Didn't get the dental work and he was fine after some antibiotics, definitely won't be going back as I can't trust them.

I loved my vet at Hillside. I negotiated a price for neutering my pup, but she pointed out that she would not be doing the surgery. I wanted no tattoo or chip, just neutering. The day of the surgery, everything went well until I received my bill. It was more than twice the price I had been quoted. I refused to pay, and insisted that they check the file for the agreement I’d made. They honoured the price, but I have never returned. I am sorry that I had to leave my vet, but no longer trusted their business practices.

One of their vets misdiagnosed a sarcoma tumour on my cat's tail in the early stages when it was a lump. I took it to another vet some months later after it grew larger and they diagnosed it as a sarcoma. The cat died after surgery failed to completely remove the tumour. I can't help but think the cat would have lived if the Hillside vet had done a proper diagnosis in the first place when surgery was likely to be more successful. Sarcomas are common in cats, so there is no excuse for this. I'll never go back there.

HORRIBLE !!!Take forever to book, do not respond to our concern., I have a large dog who needs ongoing therapy and could never book it, and they had no problem letting the medical situation worsen while they did nothing.. If a technician is not available they just cancel an appt when waited months for.( more than once!) And when we had to go elsewhere for a specific treatment they would not let is keep our chiro treatment at their hospital - again disturbing our dogs schedule and treatment plan. The one who rally suffered was my dog but they could not care less. Its about Money.Money Money and really nothing else. And I spent THOUSANDS.If you want passive aggressive unreliable, money driven care - this is your spot! Just awful and cruel with a smile!

I raced down from Nanaimo when my dog suddenly had a violent emergency . She couldn't walk or stand, and they refused to see her because they were booked. I might add that she had her annual exam here about 2 weeks prior, which makes me wonder what the hell they examined her for as she is extremely ill and has serious stomach issues that should have been detected. They sent me to the horrible Central Animal Hospital which is the worst place I've ever been in my life. I will never go back to Hillside or the Hospital. A word of advice: Get yourself a vet with a hospital who does emergencies.

DO NOT GO TO Hillside Vet!!!!!!! REALLY BAD service they won't examin the dog to put vaccines but they will make you pay for it as their protocol says you have to pay for examination in order to have vaccines. First time I went my dog has an alergia reaction for the vaccines they put to my dog, and when they checked on the dog they didn`t even know what vaccines they put. For sure will never come back.

I had a bad experience with them. I encourage people to look around at other places to take your pets. They are extremely overpriced and they have all these hidden fees they don’t tell you about it so you go and pick up your animal. And when trying to talk to them I got yelled at. I also was lied to and said I wouldn’t be able to take my animals files or take them anywhere else.

Disappointing experience and would not recommend. The staff were unprofessional and did not show interest in helping as they were very chatty amongst themselves and couldn’t be bothered helping customers. Brought my cat in who was having renal issues only to have the vet dismiss her. My cat proceeded to pee in pain, her urine containing blood. The vet took a sample for which was inconclusive as it contained bacteria from the table. I was charged for this test along with medication such as an antibotic injection which was given without knowing the prognosis. There was no explanation as to the next steps to take or what exams would be appropriate. After an expensive vet bill there was I was left feeling more confused as to my cats health and how to help her.
