Best emergency animal hospital. Every single time I take any one of my dogs the treatment for my pets and thorough and clear relay of information to me is great.

Took my dog there for an emergency. Called first. No answer. Drove there and there was a sign on the door that said to call (due to covid). Understandable. Called twice. The staff saw me but didn’t acknowledge me. I knocked on the door politely and they looked at me like I had two heads. Took my dog somewhere else but this wasted precious time. Very disappointed.

My dog received the best care possible during an emergency. I don't write reviews very often, but they deserve 5 stars. They were exceptionally thorough and saved her life. They were also exceptional in providing me with the information I needed to make decisions about her care. I can't thank them enough!!
Caring and talented staff, from the RVTs/assistants to the veterinarians. I am so happy we have access to this clinic. I have been there through emergency, neurology referral and internal medicine referral with my 2 dogs, and the care is always amazing. Most recently we saw Dr. Manens for a complex case with our little dog who was declining quickly. He managed to give us an extra year with her through his expertise, patience and world class care. I cannot thank him enough for his dedication to our little one's case.
Pros: The people truly care about the animals and go above and beyond what needs to be done to make them comfortable. Friendly and Knowledgeable staff. Doctors and staff made me feel comfortable through the process with clear explanations. Cons: Communication Price

Read this heart warming story about Canada West Veterinary on Global BC - https://globalnews.ca/news/4693582/buddy-the-dog-saved-b-c/ it tells you everything you ever wanted to know about how wonderful these people are .
There aren't really words to describe my experience at Canada West - the emotions are still rather raw, 6 months after the fact. To be clear, I think the critical care & support staff are absolutely wonderful. They did the best they could for my dog when the scenario I'm about to describe inevitably escalated. I had a frenchie, JL, that I brought to Canada from Paris. He was the most hilarious, sweet, well-mannered dog I've ever known. As with many brachycephalic dogs, his breathing was an issue, especially as he grew into adulthood. We had his nasal passageways operated on initially to try and help, to not much avail. He struggled particularly suring periods of high heat and too much exercise, and our vet recommended we explore the option of having surgery on his soft palatte to remove excess tissue. We were referred to Canada West, and went in for a consultation. Initially both the high cost of the surgery and recovery were prohibitive, so we left the surgery for a year and revisited it this past spring. During our second consult we were told of possible risks - there was a very small chance that our dog would have to have a temporary tracheostomy (breathing hole in his throat) as sometimes it can be difficult to get the dog off the ventilator, but at least it would only be temporary. We agreed that at this point we should get the surgery for the dog to help his comfort down the road (despite the fact we've never had any major distress problems) and so we booked the surgery. After insane complications, multiple tracheostomies, (the final one permanent) my dog died in my arms. Turns out his trachea was so narrow that a) the surgery would never have done anything to alleviate his breathing issues in the first place and b) the trauma of all the surgeries, pneumonia as a complication, etc is what eventually killed him. Canada West did NOT do their due diligence on my pet prior to performing invasive, life-threatening surgery. We spent about $30,000 in ~6 weeks to Canada West for nothing but absolute heartbreak. There is absolutely zero doubt in my mind that had we not opted for their recommended, "safe" surgery, my dog would still be with me today. He was only three years old. Get a second opinion and get whatever exploratory work you can have done before you put your pet's life in their hands. **Update** it’s been five years since this happened. Not so much as an apology from Canada West or ANY acknowledgement whatsoever of their mistake(s). While I’m aware of the problems many dog breeds face, this could have been easily prevented. Beware.
I’ve been here twice and both times I’ve been so appreciative of their care and foresight. I think the price is fair- especially in emergency situations. They don’t push you toward unnecessary costs however they do offer their medical insight and suggestions. I hope to never be back, but I’m very grateful for their quick and excellent care of Bob!
I have had nothing but wonderful experiences at this hospital with my Berner Stella! Dr Saam the oncologist is absolutely amazing!! Stella unfortunately was diagnosed with terminal cancer and my mom and I will be forever grateful to Dr. Saam for her compassion during the whole very difficult process
the receptionist dropped my injured cat on the ground because of their rules and regulations surrounding covid. Go somewhere else during covid if you can.
Incredibly compassionate and professional service. I, unfortunately, had to euthanize my little kitty after he was diagnosed after a one-night stay with lymphoma. They took every effort to make the experience as comfortable as they could for me. Yes, this comes with a hefty price tag but if you want the best care for your pet, this is the place to take them.
If your cat or dog could not pee, do not go to any emergency. I have learned my lesson a month ago and it has traumatized my cat. You get what you pay for in life. Yes it is more expensive but the difference is night and day. Canada west gives me updates on daily expense, everything was transparent. I was so pleased how they looked after my cat with affection and care. Every day I have follow up calls from nurse and Dr on my cats state of health. Overall I'm so happy their service and expertise.
Wow...fantastic staff and vets. Our baby Sir Chester Field earl of lazyboy blew up his knee chasing a crow. We taught if was over for him. They explained the process and where very thorough with surgery and are boy is going to be back to his old self in no time. Gold standard of veterinary care. Thank you so much. Kat and Bernie
I love the staff here. You can't put a price on commitment. Some cases do get expensive but you also have to remember you're paying for a highly trained specialist and they do have state of the art equipment. That's also the reason they're sometimes pretty busy. I see a couple of people complaining and all I can say is; you're always free to go to a cheap clinic with no wait time and your pet will get immediate but questionable, at best, treatment...
I had the worst experience with the vet tech or assistant that brought my cat out from an ultrasound. My regular vet told me that the way she requested the test, they should be able to talk to me directly about the results (because my regular clinic was closed and she was saying that I should be able to get information right away from then). The tech was flippant, and blamed my cat for giving her heck when obviously if my cat was screaming she was super scared and stressed. I was stressed about my cat's health and she was awful. And she had no idea what the results were and seemed annoyed that I would even ask her, and they didn't talk to me about anything. On my insistence, they cc'd me a copy of the report afterwards, but i needed help interpreting what possibilities there were and how severe the prognosis was, so that wasn't helpful. I never even saw the facilities, nor was i talked to in a room. I also never heard from the vet that did the analysis on the report ever. They just took my cat from me in the waiting room and then brought her out later there. My cat was shaved for the test, but before she was shaved, she had nipples, and then she was totally smooth after? The man that took her seemed reasonable, and the reception too. But the whole procedure and that tech was not. This happened quite a while ago, and it took an emergency situation at VCA Canada Emergency Animal Clinic where the staff were all competent and kind to show me how even more disappointing the Canada West experience was. I will not return.
Thank you so very much for trying so hard to save tiny Nano kitten.
(Update: still stand by what all I said in original review, but will say the communication/responses back are really hit-or-miss with them the past year. Often takes multiple follow ups to get an answer from a department, and not just one from reception saying they will be in touch. ) We have been taking our dog here for the past couple of years. Staff and service is all exceptional. I can understand some reviewers talking about "out for you money", as they usually do like to offer up the gamut of testing services on our bi-yearly visits. But if you have a pet requiring referral for their specialized care, then there is probably a good reason they bring up the tests. You are there because you deem your pet loved enough for elective care to give the best/longest quality of life you can. The staff always offer tests and explain why each would be important/helpful, but end of the day they leave decision to us for what is done. Only urging something if they feel it could be critically important.
Took my dog, Roxy, here for an Ultrasound, referred by my dog's regular Vet Doctor. Roxy and I both had a good experience here. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. They answered any and all questions I had before the procedure and they kept me in the loop when Roxy was done. This is a really good location and easily accessible. I wasn't able to enter the unit due to COVID-19 restrictions, but from what I could see from the front window, the place looked super nice and clean. I'd recommend this place. 10/10!
I cannot thank them enough. Dr. Nick and the team of neurologists saved our beloved Bigo-Chan. Yes, It was (very) expensive, but the care they provided was superb. Dr. Nick himself contacted me every day by phone to let me know of the latest developments on Bigo´s condition, including a few minutes after the surgery had finished. Bigo is now recovering and resting at home. And me... well..., if you excuse me, I have to go look for a good pet insurance to purchase.
Always very caring
Spent almost $2000 to get wrong information about my dogs condition. Their wrong information led to a decision against getting surgery which would have saved my pets life. I am so angry with them. I will never take a pet there again.
This is such an amazing facility. The care and compassion that every staff member has is incredible. My dog spent 3 nights with them and she almost died so I spent a lot of time at the hospital. I witnessed constant patience, care and empathy for all their patients and they do all they can to make difficult situations as comfortable as possible.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! First of all, they are no better than other pet clinics, if not worse. They re friendly at the first and they take your dog to the back the minute you walk in, then they become the boss and keeps you waiting if you don't agree to pay their big bill. They suggest expensive tests even though my dog most likely doesnt need it just so they can make money. They will say they are not sure the problem because without the tests. I ended up paid $2000 for 24 hrs hospitalisation and useless tests. They have suggested another day at hospital for another $800-900. After i insisted to take my dog home because he is pretty much recovered, they didn't even bother to call me for the pending results of the tests. No real assistance or help discussing how to do home care except for one sheet about meds. Very unhappy with their service and lack of clarity in how they were going to charge. Extremely expensive and staff was rude when confronted with the issue.
DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE! Staff initially said quoted $1500 and ENDED UP CHARGING AN ADDITIONAL 1500! $3000!!! Very unhappy with their service and lack of clarity in how they were going to charge. Extremely expensive and staff was rude when confronted with the issue.
Covid protocols are ridiculous and not geared to providing the best quality care for the animals and owners. The world is opening back up but Canada west is not allowing you to attend a consult or provide video consults. They will allow you in the doors to hand off your pet, interact with front desk staff/vet techs but not allow you in the room with the doctor because they are worried you may get the doctor sick, this thinking is absolutely ridiculous, so I can come in to the establishment and potentially infect other staff but not attend an important consult with my dog and be able to ask questions and understand fully before agreeing to surgery because I may infect the doctor. Covid seems like an excuse to not have to engage with owners or go into detail about procedures that may be done. Also being able to see how staff interact with my dog is a big indication of the treatment my dog would get when I am not present, not being witness to or having the abilities to set up a video consult makes me think this establishment won’t really care for your pet fully. The way they speak to potential customers when they have such ridiculous protocols in appalling. Time to re evaluate the protocols because they don’t make any sense!
They just did TPLO on my puppo, they were very caring and my dog is doing amazing now. I have found Dr. Kuzma to very intelligent and knowledgeable. I talked to many other vets about this operation before I put my dog through it, all of them spoke very highly of Dr. Kuzma and of can west. I would recommend them to anybody from what I can tell they are some of the best in western Canada and I am very appreciative of the love and care they gave my moose
Provided great care and professional service. Were extremely transparent about pricing and options. Would recommend to anyone.
Saved my cat Zoros life! And helped out Immensely with the $$$$ He would not be here if it wasn't for them.
After reading a few negative reviews I was concerned. But if you are looking for the best care for your animal don't hesitate to come here. It will not be cheap but you are paying for specialist and special diagnostic equipment you can't find elsewhere. We brought our little dog suffering from paralysis into Can West. She was given a full work up. Holly was well looked after while in their care. Unfortunately, the tests were not conclusive for any diagnosis. We came to a consensus it was Coonhounds disease and hoped to nurse her back to health. Our dog's health declined and we ended up rushing her to Can West After hours. Our sweet fur baby did not survive but I feel content in knowing that we got her the best care that we could. Dr Higgins was thorough and caring. Dr Cotter was very compassionate, informative and kind. Can West did not try and force unnecessary test on us. They were straight forward, professional and compassionate.
The best specialists and care that my dog and I could imagine. My 16 months pup had a complicated surgery in Canada West. I would like to say THANK YOU to dr. Tamara MacDonald and the rest of the team for the great work! People from Canada West have big hearts, commitment and love for animals and patient to people (I don't know how many phone calls I made before, during and after the surgery). My pup is during recovery time, and I am so glad that we chose this place.
Excellent care and service, staff and doctors helped us throughout a very difficult diagnosis and treatment for our dog. Our dog loved the ceiling art as well
The vets and vet techs in the ICU are incredible people; they saved our cat's life. The receptionist for the internal medicine service however has a serious attitude problem (if she still works there). She is shockingly rude on the phone to clients AND other vet clinics. I thought she was joking at first because I didn't think anyone could be that unprofessional. Unfortunately, her bad attitude sets the tone for the department, which is a shame as everyone else is wonderful.
If you want the best care especially with an emergency, Canada West is the place to go . There are doctors, specialists, nurses 24/7 who are extremely skilled . Canada West is the Hospital for our loving pets. Thank goodness we have all of these amazing people !!! SO GRATEFUL <3
I really appreciate their 24-hour emergency services and the professional staff here. My dog and I were treated with respect here and they offered great care with short notice. The emergency consult of course was pricy but well worth it.
When it was my senior kitty's time, they took good care in a challenging situation. They are very expensive, but their care is top notch. My cat took suddenly ill, and was obviously in pain, and they helped her when she needed it most. They discuss your options clearly, they give you time to decide what to do, they guide you through the process, and they even sent a sweet condolences card afterwards, which meant a great deal to me. They're very skilled with both animals and humans. Thank you, Canada West staff. You're the best.
It was a nice place, professional staff, it was very expensive but didn't want to wait. However the Vet knew our cats were doomed and sent out the nurse to give me some generic instructions. I would say if its a real emergency or if you have deep pockets then go ahead otherwise wait for local vet to open. EDIT, The two cats actually died. I went back frustrated and upset. The vet I spoke to who was different than the one who treated them, read the file and I could see the change in her expression, when she realized what had been written and what we were told. I asked half refund, the vet apologized and gave it to us.
This hospital is the best. The customer service is perfect and professional. They are all knowledgeable and super nice. The way they care about our pet, is unbelievable. I love this hospital and all its staff and surgeons.
Are they expensive? Yes. But all vet care is. Canwest facility and staff are amazing. Period. We've had our dog here twice for major illness/injury and both times they have been fantastic. I get that some people can be very sensitive when they are here, firstly because your pet is in trouble (or you wouldn't be there) and secondly because vet care can be extremely expensive and not everyone can afford it, but that's not Canwest's fault. You get what you pay for and in this case it's first class care. This is why pet insurance or saving up in the event that something happens should be assumed to be part of being a pet owner.
My dog Benny has been a patient with Dr. Cheng, Dr. Kelly, Dr. Adelman, and Dr. MacDonald. He was originally diagnosed with puppy strangles but it was later discovered to be an autoimmune issue. We originally feared Benny's life was endangered due to excessive swelling around his neck, partially blocking his airway. The staff at Canada West has done an excellent job in addressing Benny's issues and treating his symptoms so that he can return to living a normal life again. Everyone has been very friendly with honest and open communication, answering emails at all hours, and it is very clear that the staff and vets care about their patients and are passionate about caring for and rehabilitating animals. I would recommend them to anyone, especially if you are experiencing an emergency with your pet.
It has been over a year since we had our dog in CanWest. Long story short it cost over $14000 for just over a week of care and it didn't save our little guy. Lots of tests and really fancy reports later the conclusion was 'we have no clue'
Great staff and vets. My dog had brachycephalic surgery here and an MRI of his back to investigate back pain. A couple bumps in the road with some minor blips (e.g., given wrong size E-Collar initially - didn’t bother checking if it fit before sending me home) but we are happy with the overall care at this facility. They also keep it really clean which is nice! Also, post-op, our surgeon/surgery team were always willing to answer all our questions or concerns we had.
Wonderful people! I brought them a paralyzed and bleeding racoon that had been hit by a car to be euthanized. I expected to have to pay for the euthanization but they did it free of charge.
My cat Pepper had a blood clot and the only option for her was to be put down. I was a wreck. But if it wasn't for the kind hearted doctors and assistants at Canada West, it would have been even worse. They even sent me a signed card from the staff after. Thank you
We brought our 10 year Schnauzer in for an oncology CT scan. The results confirmed his cancer has returned. We were only given intervention options: a major surgery, and an extremely major surgery. Cemo/radiation was mentioned but they disclosed that it is known to be ineffective. Palliative care wasn't brought up at all. I caution other pet parents to be aware that suggested procedures might not always be in the best interest of your pet. This is a veterinary clinic that offers high quality care but they also operate as a business. I felt like it's not part of their standard operating procedure to volunteer information about things like palliative care or comfort measures. I was disappointed by the for-profit focus of Canada West.
My dog had TPLO surgery at Canada West. He is a sweet, cooperative, gentle giant but he is on Prozac to treat anxiety. (He'd been used for dog fighting before I rescued him and gets anxious if he sees other dogs acting aggressively.) The actual surgery went well and the physical therapist, Sara, is awesome. I highly recommend Sara. But if one of my dogs needed specialty surgery again, I'd go elsewhere even if it means driving to another city. The surgery team had told me I could wait with him until he was sedated. The ward nurse who checked us in was extremely insensitive. First she kept referring to his "aggression" on account of the Prozac. He is NOT aggressive. She made it quite clear that as far as she was concerned, my waiting with him was not an option. Then she literally shoved him into a kennel whereupon he started shaking and panting and drooling. When I pointed out that he was very anxious she said dismissively that a lot of dogs get anxious. Not acceptable! Panic attacks should not be normal. The ward staff should care whether dogs are in a panic. Even if they personally are not animal lovers (which they should be for that job), they are in a service occupation and they should care whether the owner is upset (I was very clearly upset). To make matters worse, when I called the next morning (he had to stay overnight after his surgery) to ask how he was doing, the nurse (vet tech?) on duty said brightly "He's doing just fine!" When she failed to elaborate I asked for details and she said "I'll have to check. Which dog are you calling about?" So she told me my dog was doing well without even knowing which dog was mine! At that point I told her that I was coming over to see for myself and would wait with him until he was discharged. They offered instead to discharge him early. Then they shorted him on medications. Yes, we took into account that he had his first dosage at the hospital. When I called about it, the receptionist said I must have counted wrong. My husband and I both did the calculations independently and both found him short. We can count and subtract accurately. Finally, he had his follow-up x-rays at our usual vet to avoid Canada West. He was so good he didn't need any sedation. We sent the x-rays to Canada West and the surgeon was supposed to call and confirm that all looked good. No one ever called. I have a lot of faith in our general vet and he says the x-rays look good, so I'm not really worried...but it is very poor service on the part of Canada West. UPDATE: When my dog needed a second TPLO surgery, I took him to a tertiary center in the states, at one of their vet medicine programs. The experience was completely different. He was treated with such kindness and compassion that he showed minimal signs of anxiety pre-op or when going back for follow up appointments. They did a great job providing specific details and prompt updates post-op. Both knees did very well long term, and I highly recommended the TPLO surgery...just be careful where you have it done. (Long term was ~4 years; we recently lost him to cancer.)
My experience isn't as severe as many others, be it positive or negative, but I found the staff there to be very friendly and patient. My family vet was concerned about water in my kitten's lungs and had him sent to the hospital where they saw him immediately. The vet / intern who looked after my kitten, Christopher Drolet, explained everything that he did clearly and gave me affordable, non-invasive and safe options for further investigation and treatment. Thankfully it seems my kitten's condition is not immediately life threatening, but he will have to be monitored at home. Dr. Drolet was friendly and didn't push for expensive methods like others have mentioned this hospital does. I really appreciate his kindness! While unavoidable, as this hospital does have specialists that other hospitals wouldn't, the only downside is the price. While it was worth getting the reassurance that my kitten's life wasn't in danger, it still hurt my wallet a bit. Even with pet insurance, paying that money upfront can add to the stress of an already worrisome situation.
The tech/receptionist that called us for our referral was delightful. Extremely knowledgeable, helpful and patient. I think her name was Ashley so Ashley you are fabulous.
Great experience for my cat, very professional and kind, thanks
Thank you to Dr Sharp, Dr Smith and the team for taking care of my little friend Charlie. He's doing well, starting physio this week. Everyone was so kind and understanding
My first experience taking my dog into critical/emergency care. I was concerned because reviews for other emergency care hospitals had some terrifying stories about overcharging and doing unnecessary tests. However, my experience with Canada West was extremely pleasant. From the receptionist to the doctors and technicians, everyone was super helpful. They provided practical advice, explained everything very thoroughly, answered all of my questions with patience, and took very good care of my nervous/sick pup. Yes, it was pricey but I didn't feel that they were overcharging me or offered unnecessary exams to jack up the price. They only recommended what was needed to be done, gave me all of the options to consider, and helped me make a wise decision. My dog is doing so much better as a result! I hope I don't have to come back to emergency care, but if I do, I know that I can trust the team at Canada West!
Brought in my dog who had a ruptured disc, referred by my regular vet. Although not appearing very busy staff was VERY disorganized, and as we waited for a gurney, someone finally noticed we could use one, and so the receptionist plucked up the phone and said "um, yeah can you send out one of those, umm thingies...yeah..", no word of a lie. Incredible. Carrying on... so we fill out the paperwork and shortly afterward we were ushered into another exam room and asked the very same questions by an intern. A few minutes later in come Doctor (Mike) Higgins and two interns, grinning uncomfortably. Tenting his fingers, we knew that the news was probably not going to be great. His (physical) examination concluded that she did indeed have a herniated disc, and that surgery was recommended immediately - he left the room and a few minutes later in walks a girl with an 'estimate'... $7500. I'm a reasonable person, and i understand care costs, but this was insane - shocked I said "we can't afford this" (NOTE: Canada West wants 75% cash up front!). The girl just shrugged her shoulders and said "well that's what it costs" and left the room. In comes Dr. Higgins for the hard sell... "well I recommend surgery" he says, as expected, or you have the other alternative. My wife was devastated. So our choices are pay them the money or euthanize the dog??? Really??? I said we don't even know what we are dealing with as not even a CT scan was done to determine the damage...though Dr. Higgins assured us it was severe enough. I called my regular vet, who told me we could opt for a longer and tougher recovery with conservative therapy (rest and meds) if the injury wasn't severe. I agreed to only do the CT scan first - cash up front of course. $1500. Shortly after we get the results, minor pressure on spinal cord and almost no discernable disc tissue - so we decided to opt for conservative treatment. Not once was this mentioned by the trained Vet, Dr. Higgins as an option - only when we mentioned it since we couldn't afford $7500 and countless other 'extras' afterward, he offered his opinion. If you want to try any non-surgical treatment Canada West will go out of their way to discourage you even if its the only option you have left. I found it odd since in the room we were in there was a pamphlet in the exam room we were in that clearly explained this, we found it, it was never offered to us. We agreed, for another $400 to leave her overnight for observation and Dr. Higgins would meet us the next day for discharge. Picked up our dog, no Dr. Higgins around, and apart from collecting the remainder of the bill $2100 in all, no real assistance or help discussing how to do home care except for one sheet about meds, and another letter from Dr. Higgins basically covering his rear-end. EPIC FAIL. I clearly have no problem paying money for vets ($2100 obvioiusly) but to hold your customers and their loved ones hostage by basically stating its surgery or euthanasia is unquestionably reprehensible and yet another reason why the public is so incredibly cynical about vets and their concern for profit over your pet. We felt pressured into signing for surgery with no CT scan and no full disclosure other than the 'estimated charges'. This is no way to run an ethical treatment facility. Shame on you!!
Our little dog needed knee surgery to fix a grade III dislocation. Dr. Aktay was very helpful and fully explained everything to do with the surgery and what to expect moving forward. The rest of the team responded quickly whenever we had questions and they called to offer a sooner date when one became available (even though we didn't ask to be notified). They took really good care of our little Phoebe during her overnight post-op stay and I knew she was being cared for by the best. I did research other places for the surgery but I am glad I was referred here by our vet. Our little fur baby means the world to us and I wouldn't recommend anyone else other than the staff at Canada West.
My cat died at home while I was at work, seemingly healthy so it was quite a shock. I took her to Canada West for handling the cremation as there aren't many places available for such services at 9 pm in the evening. They were incredibly kind and compassionate. They brought me to a private room to relay the relevant details and give me time to wait with her and think about my options. Once they took her away they let me sit as long as I needed. They reached out to me twice after that, once a day or so later to ask what I wanted to do with the cat bed I had left there, they offered donation as an option which I was glad to go with. A week or so later I received a card in the mail with condolences from a number of their team members. It was very touching and thoughtful, so unexpected and it made me feel better on a day I was feeling pretty blue. I just came across the card today and wanted to leave a review. Thanks for your support on such a tough day.
Cannot put into words how amazing the people are here and the high level of professionalism. They get that pet owners and pets are distressed when they come here. We were impressed with how efficient, respectful, friendly and upbeat every level of staff was when we brought our dog in twice in one week for an emergency. It's the very best care you'll find anywhere for your pet. Yes it is expensive but they lay out all options for you and nobody says you must do this or that. You make the decision based on what the doctor's best advice would be. We paid for several tests and got results back the SAME day. Thank you so much for the incredible service you offer. Going to your own vet is sometimes not adequate: this is pet care on a completely different level. Btw, lesson to all pet owners: get pet insurance.
The staff was incredibly kind.
Forget 5 stars, this is a 6-STAR outfit. Dr. King and his surg. team are absolutely outstanding. Full confidence in this group.
Our cat Nori decided it was a good idea to eat an entire haas avocado bag while we were out for an hour. We came to Canada West because there was a wait of about 4 hours at other emergency vets. We were glad that we got in right away and they were able to induce vomiting and she expelled the majority of the mesh bag before it moved through her system. I was really worried that they were going to need to perform surgery. They are slightly more expensive but they have a great team who helped out cat quickly and because of that, our vet bill was not as high in the end.
It's taken me years to finally comment. The treatment given to my lab was almost insane. My wife was told what tests were needed. After an inordinate amount of money my dogs condition was worse. Couldn't walk. I finally got involved when they suggested a dog psychologist be flown in. I took her to another vet, turns out it was a tick bite. Diagnosed immediately. The antibiotics worked immediately and she could walk again unfortunately her spine was fused from the bacteria growth. My dog's health never fully recovered, and her last two years could have been better. Yup, I never asked how much his recomended dog psychologist would cost. I'm not a vet, but I'm guessing that would have been a waste of money & time, given the fact it was tick bite. Maybe the psychologist could sit with my dog and ask, how does all the work done so far make you feel? They soaked us for a lot of money. They are either incompetent or crooks. Karma has a way of getting them. If they ever have stage 2 cancer, I hope their doctor recommends some psychologists sit and talk to them. How can they sleep at night?!
Was in for emergency surgery for a broken leg August 24th. The service was excellent. Costly but worth it. The reason for only 3 stars is at 6 weeks we had our vet on the Island take xrays and forward them to Canada west. Unfortunately we are on week 8 going on 9 and still haven't heard from them. Our vet and we have called and emailed and still nothing.
We went through a 3 month long ordeal when my puppy had an accident and shattered his wrist, and our regular vet referred us to this specialist. It was a hard and stressful time for us and our baby dog. Despite all of that I am glad we put our trust in these folks at Canada West. Overall we had an excellent experience here, many thanks to Dr. King who performed the surgery, and many others who helped along the way. Our pup is a big boy now but he's still as bouncy as ever.
This facility is a wonderful place. Our little girl had Meningoencephalitis. We are very grateful to Dr. Higgins, Dr. Castel and staff for what they done for DAISY.We would recommend this hospital to anyone that needs excellent care for there love one.
We never hope to come back again soon, but for the inevitable occasions our puppy has required emergency vet services, we are lucky to have been seen here. Everyone on staff has been caring and attentive. Dr. Gendreau was so patient and nonjudgmental, answering all my questions before proceeding with medical intervention. I felt confident that the least invasive steps were being taken to ensure our puppy's well-being and quick recovery. The reality is that ER vet services are expensive, but we've always received a high level of care to match. Thank you!
Staff and service are the best you can dream for.
5 stars for Dr King and Brad the receptionist!!! Dr King is a fantastic surgeon, he saved my cat's life. Brad worked with me directly over the course of three days while I was in and out of the hospital, he walked me through signing up for a loan, he helped me remain calm through a very scary emergency. I am very grateful.
We are really impressed with the amount of care and knowledge from every person we have dealt with here. Our puppy Winston took a fall on Sunday and fractured his arm. We are so happy we took him to Canada West for his hospitalization and surgery. We could rest easy knowing and trusting he was truly being taken care of by professionals. We will not say enough good things about this hospital. It really does make a difference to take your pet to the best place around. There is nowhere else we will take our animals if we ever (hopefully not!!) have any kind of emergency again. Thank you Canada West and everyone involved in Winston's care and surgery. Caitlin Frisk & William Scott
We've had to visit Canada West twice in the last 6 months for emergency appointments. The last of which was this weekend when we had to suddenly say goodbye to our beloved Dixie. On both occasions every member of staff has been incredible, expert and efficient but so loving and compassionate as well. If you need an emergency vet this is an amazing place to go. Our deepest thanks to everyone at Canada West for their amazing care.
I have been to Canada West vets for two surgeries for my dog and an emergency visit. During all occasions they offered me fantastic service, and also better prices than other clinics I have been to in the past.
Very caring vet. My dog went in for a pernial hernia surgery and it went well. Unfortunately he got a new hernia on the other side - not related to this surgery. Very knowledgeable and compassionate surgeon. Would recommend Dr Hoorntje for anyone who has a pet in need of surgery. Much love to Canada West.
They go above and beyond to try to save all lives
Thank you for saving my kitten Shu! Dr Nicholls and her amazing staff were fantastic, well informed and caring. I couldn't imagine a better team to save your animal!
GO SOMEWHERE ELSE UNLESS YOU HAVE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND. Brought our cat in for dry heaving and throwing up clear fluid, had no idea what was wrong with her and it was late at night and this was one of the only places open at the time. We arrive & you can hear the employees just laughing loudly & having a grand ol' time. We wait to register her and stuff and finally someone comes to the front to take her. We spend almost 45 minutes waiting to head what might be wrong & when someone finally comes to talk to us they say she thinks shes fine but wants to send off some xrays for additional cost. They don't tell us how much any of this is or even just bringing her in. It wasnt until I had a bad feeling that we asked the cost because we didnt have the money for thousands of dollars. They give us an estimate of about $600. I start crying because I did not think it would be that much and explain we just dont have the money for that. They want to do a surgery that'll be about ten grand right on the spot and if we don't have the money they want to put her down. She swallowed a string and needed emergency surgery. We couldnt afford it but also did not want to put our sweet baby down either as she wasnt even a year old at the time. $600 and they did absolutely nothing. Didnt fix her one bit except find out she had a string lodged in her intestines & wanted 10 thousand up front before they would do anything or put our kitten down. I refused this and ended up having to surrender her to the SPCA in hopes they could save her. Even though I dont have my kitty now the SPCA told me she got her surgery and was in recovery the last I heard and since I surrendered her I had no right to anymore information. Anyway, when we heard this at the vet we went back out into the waiting room sobbing & can still hear everyone in the back laughing it up and having the best time ever. Like, theres sick animals and stressed out animal guardians in there. I'm just so upset about the whole thing. I called other vet clinica and talked to other cat owners and they all said it was insane how they didnt offer any other options other than a surgery that cost thousands and how they did absolutely nothing and it still cost over $500. Go anywhere else, do not go here. Obviously they're all there for the money not to actually help people. I hate this place, I really do. People like this shouldnt be in the business of helping animals. They should be hidden in cubicle offices away from people filing papers or something. So upset with this place and that we didnt have the option to go anywhere else or that I didnt just call the SPCA in the first place. Not only did we have to surrender our kitty the same night we shelled out hundreds of dollars to this place we also had to deal with the terrible service and the judgemental vet or whatever she was and how they just added cost after cost without even asking us if we could afford it. Looking at the bill I was like shocked at how much they charge for very little. Just sad. This is a millionaire vet hospital or something because nobody I know has just 10 thousand dollars at the drop of a hat. Even got asked to ask family members like 10 thousand is just pocket change.
Thieves and sickos. Run!
Fantastic staff here. We brought our very sick cat in, and the staff were professional, kind and compassionate and highly knowledgeable. After going to some other places, I can't recommend Canada West enough.
I went in to Canada west for a consultation with Dr. King. He was very sensitive to the situation and took time to go over all the options and provided us with his recommendations. It was a very optimistic, interactive, educational visit. I highly recommend Dr. King, I felt that he truly cared for my puppy- he is a very genuine doctor. My expectations were blown, Thank you Dr King!
The veterinarians, techs, and staff here are fantastic. They fought tooth and nail for our little Gallifrey. They provided daily updates from the veterinarian, and we could call almost anytime for a nursing update. We knew she was in excellent hands. A huge thank you to all who cared for gallifrey. She was a very special little girl, and we know you did everything you possibly could have.
Rip off artists. Took my mother in law for over $15,000 on her 16 year old cat. They can smell the money. . One thing after another until the case passed in their facility. Test after exam after overnight stay charges, it was endless. Should have put the cat down as she asked when it was first brought in.....
Our dog (Ruby, a 5 mth golden retriever) was hit by a vehicle and suffered a number of fairly serious injuries. After being stabilized at our local vet, we transported her to Canada West where she remained for 48 hours. The care she received was absolutely exceptional and we couldn't have been happier with the professional attention she received. The two doctors that attended to her (Dr. Royle and Dr Nicholls) did an excellent job diagnosing and treating Ruby's injuries. They kept us in the loop with regular updates and clearly explained the steps that they were taking to care for her. The COVID procedures are completely reasonable but they did prevent us from being able to come into the hospital to see Ruby. However, the nurses (unfortunately I didn't catch their names) really went above and beyond by emailing us videos and Facetiming with us so we could see Ruby. It was clear to us that the staff really cared about our dog and this made the whole ordeal much easier for us. Overall, our experience couldn't be better and we are grateful for the skill and dedication of everyone at Canada West.
They wanted 4000 for cleaning up wounds for my dog. What a deal !
The vets and the whole team here are amazing. They made a stressful situation as easy and it could be when my kitty came here for emergency care. She was here for 5 nights, they continued to give me thorough updates and have checked on her condition after discharge. I'm so impressed with them and am beyond grateful for their high standard of care.
This place is amazing! There are specialists for every issue your animal could ever have. While it does come with a cost, it's nice to be able to have my cat get an ultrasound by a board certified radiologist and examined by a board certified internal medicine specialist in the same visit to figure out what's going on with him. The medical staff here care for their patients like they were their own. Like any medical condition, it's sometimes hard to figure out what's going on but these professionals will do everything they can and work with you and your budget to try and figure out what's going on.
Took our kitten in that ate a toy and couldn't be happier with the experience. Everyone I interacted with was incredibly sweet and caring, made me feel calm in a time of high stress. The doctor took the time to explain everything and give us options for moving forward, as well as a follow up call the next day. It's so important to me to take my pets to a place that will care and love them as much as I do and I felt that here.
I have to echo the reviews of so many others at this place. What people at this place do is called extortion. Beware that if you enter this place you might exit it without your furry friend or with a very large hole in your pocket. I truly hope no one has to go through the experience what we went through here. My husband was referred here after our kitten fell from our balcony on the 9th floor. We were in shock with what had happened, not to mention ridden with guilt as relatively new pet owners. Thankfully our kitten had nothing broken but had a punctured lung. Long story short Dr Woodbury told us our kitten would need to stay at the hospital for 3-5 days on oxygen due go his puctured lung otherwise he might die at home. The cost would be $1,000/day. When pressed, the dr couldn't even explain what the cost would be for. When my husband told him this is not something we could afford the dr said the cat is in pain and so he should be put down. What kind of vet offers this kind of option to a suffering person?? When my husband asked to have our cat back to take him elsewhere the dr refused and said if we can't afford the cost we should give him up for adoption. How is it possible for a clinic to take your pet - YOUR PET - and refuse to give them back to you unless you agree to their procedures?? It took my husband getting VERY firm before our kitten was returned. The dr then threatened to call the SPCA - which he did, contributing extra stress and anxiety to a situation that was already so difficult! We took our kitten to our regular vet who offered us a much more reasonable treatment plan that we could carry out at home. Our kitten made a full recovery and we didn't need to spend thousands of dollars unnecessarily to hospitalize him. I am extremely disappointed in the lack of compassion at this clinic. The moment you walk through their doors, you're at their mercy. And that means your wallet! I am thankful that my husband kept his cool otherwise we would have spent thousands of dollars here! If you walk through their doors be prepared to spend A LOT of money, have your pet taken away from you and have the SCPCA called on you. Horrible!
Without a doubt one of the best animal hospitals in the world. The treatment, communication and compassion here are second to none. They're absolute pros at dealing with animals, and fur-parents. Thank you Can West for all that you do.
I spoke with multiple receptionists over days. They were all very helpful and lovely. The doctors and nurses had excellent communication. Although we did not find the cause of the problem and it was very expensive. The communication was so good in making decisions in what procedures and tests to do together. It was easy to understand why we were doing the tests and the expense regardless of not knowing the cause. Also our cat was in good hands to recover with electrolytes etc to gain strength to get the chance to safely come home and recover. Everyone was amazing. At no point did I feel it was "a business trying to take my money" I felt like we were well cared for and the intention was to get are cat stable so they could move on to the next emergency just like it should be. Also I was impressed with how quickly they got the file to our regular vet for follow up. Thank you so much!
You can count on the team. Dr. Spencer Burnett and the team r awesome. Many thanks again
Dr Manens in the internal medicine dept was extremely thorough and really took his time to discuss our options moving forward with our dog. We really appreciate how kind the staff is. This clinic is huge, I have taken other dogs there in the past and have always received excellent, compassionate care and know they are always in the best hands. Thank you.
Amazing doctors and staff. Took great care of our dog for four days when he was quite sick.
They care about your pet here but it is unbelievably expensive and I have not had better results here than anywhere else. I have spent close to $10,000 on my dog over the last week and a half and we still have no idea what is causing any of her issues. I just keep repeating and paying for the same tests over and over with no result and almost no insight into what is happening. It may be because I have seen a different vet nearly every time I went there and it is difficult for them to communicate, and I know you can't expect to have results when it comes to medical fields, I just have a hard time reconciling what I have spent and what we have been through to essentially be a few steps back from where we started.
Took my bird to them with no appointment. They informed me that they do not handle birds. The staff was amazing, a vet came and took the bird and stopped her bleeding. All at NO CHARGE. I will be back with my ferrets. Thank You
I took my bulldog Romeo to Dr.King and he was amazing and sensitive to my situation as he needed a very expensive surgery but did not over charge me. He saved my boys life as well as the staff cared for him top notch. I will forever be grateful to them and promise to give the highest recomendation for any special need treatments.
My dog Blue had his hip replaced and the professionalism and compassion shown by all the staff at Canada West was exceptional. Thank you Dr King and the staff for taking care of my boy Blue.
Pros: - Very nice facility - Extremely knowledgeable specialists - Staff that truly cares about your animal's well-being Cons: - Extremely expensive - Poor communication The biggest con for me is the poor communication. On several occasions I asked for a follow-up on my requests and did not receive one. I was told the wrong time in my appointment reminder and ended up showing 30 mins too early (which sucked because they were 30 mins late for my appointment). They neglected to tell me an appropriate pick up time and when I went there after work they said he'd need a few more hours to recover from the sedation. For me, communication is very important because I'm very busy and can't spend an hour waiting for an appointment.
Such kind and knowledgeable staff, I am so grateful that they are open 24/7. Highly recommend Canada West Vet!
I want to thank Dr Ashleigh and the rest of the Canada West staff today for their professionalism and care. Obviously nobody wants to come into the emergency vet, however my cat Renfrew was taken care of in her last moments. We got to say goodbye in a dignified and comfortable manner.
Wow, what a great place!! Have taken both my dogs here, first older one and now my 2.3 year old. This last experience, me in panick over cutting nail too close with bleeding not stopping, regular vet not available, so phoned and they just asked how long to get there. 20 minutes later took her right in, sat down filling out paperwork, before even finishing paperwork, say maybe 15 minutes, I look up and there is my dog and they give me wax sticks tell me how to use if the bleeding starts again. Then to top it off they tell what a great dog I have, how good she was and there was no charge!
AMAZING! You and your lovely staff were so supportive and empathetic to us during a very hard time. I have no idea how you guys do what you do. You are like animal angels!!! Thank you for taking our little princess and making her last few days the most comfortable that they could be.
Possibly the best veterinary hospital in Canada. Unparalleled standard of care, compassion, honesty and ethical care. 5 star all the way and many more. Today I was giving a client directions to Canada West when I noticed a cluster of 1 star reviews on Google. As an emergency veterinarian who regularly refers many of my most critical patients to Canada West, and also as someone who used to work at Canada West and knows it from the inside, I can honestly tell you that this is an absolutely amazing veterinary hospital, and that the medical team is truly inspiring. We are all so lucky to have this exceptional facility so close by. Any 1 star reviews of Canada West Veterinary Specialists can only come from 1 star clients, who either do not acknowledge that medical care is a fundamental responsibility of pet ownership or who have no concept of the financial reality of medical care. It saddens me that the amazing team at Canada West has to deal with these types of 1 star pet owners and their nasty reviews. Their job is hard enough as it is and they are nothing but excellent. I am proud to know them and am nothing but inspired by their incredible work. Dr. Melinda Lopez
Called from the interior of BC where we have no 24 hour vet. Our Pom Chi had eaten a corn cob and we needed some advice on what to do. They were happy to help even asking the doctor on call for advice. Thank you so much!!
Incredible service. You are well taken care of here.
We brought our dog into Canada West after he felt sick. This was not before we went to VCA Canada on Alberta Street where we had a horrible experience at (couldn’t diagnose our dog’s problem, prescribing unnecessary medication and losing our health records). Our dog had a high fever along with a few other symptoms of illness so it was important that we get him treated ASAP. So, we decided to go to Canada West after being referred there by our home Vet. Canada West was by far the better hospital. Their receptionist team and doctors were very professional and helpful, from drop off to pick up. They quickly came up with a treatment plan and informed us of the estimated costs. Their pricing was very fair and their estimates were very accurate to what we actually paid. Dr. Kelly was very helpful and professional. Our dog required an overnight stay at their ICU, and Dr. Kelly kept us updated throughout the 2 days. Canada West even had a “virtual visit” for pet owners to have a zoom meeting with their pets while they’re being hospitalized. After the 2 days, our dog felt much better and his fever was no longer apparent. Overall, we had a very good experience with this company, and recommend you bring your pet there if they’re feeling sick. Fair pricing, professional staff, and very organized!
Couldn’t be more happy with our experience at Canada West Emergency Vet. The staff and doctor was so informative and so sweet! The doctor knew what she was doing and I’m forever grateful to the doctors and the staff there for taking care of my dog :)
Great and caring service. Had my 17 year old cat put down here on June 14.
Took our sick dog there to emergency. They were so kind and helpful. Dr Shannon Kelly was amazing. So communicative and sweet. Treated our pup as we would want her to. Called with timely updates and provided a well written detailed summary and home care instructions. She popped in to say goodbye on discharge. Wish she was our regular vet. Expensive, yes, but everything was detailed and options were discussed. I never felt pressured to spend unessesarily. Would definitely take her back if needed. Hope we never do tho!!!
waiting 3 hrs in the EMERGENCY hospital for no reason!! The receptionists who were sitting in the back of room "extremely rare" show up in the front during the 3 hrs. They randomly put other people in front us without any good explanation. of cuz I don't mind someone cut lines front me because of serious issues. But I came here for EMGENCY issue as well, my cat were high possibility broken the paw. No explaining just waiting. Guess after 3 hrs waiting, kids were extremely tired and sleepy and we were finally seen another night shift doctor. We got the answer from her "was not too sure, and needed $700 for just further x-ray etc". They will charge you thousands of dollars for "extra care" even you might not needed. Well, basically charged us $249 for doing nothing but wait 3.5 hrs that night. I mean at least she could tell us it was swelling, break the bone or what. Luckily, I finally booked another vet in Richmond after two days, although it's really far to drive, they provided us much details about my cat situation and the price was not vague at all compare Canada West Vet. Well good luck for people going Can West Vet, even though it takes me 6mins drive there, but I'm not gonna waste my time going there anymore.
Vausch passed away peacefully at 12:35 am May 29th 2018. Its an understatement to say how wonderful staff at Canada West was when Vausch was there.
Let me begin by saying I am overwhelmed by the HUMANITARIANS in Dr. Chris Kennedy and the HR Staff person "Ellie" please forgive me if the name is incorrect. I want to also thank Dr. Annie Lin. There sadly was one female vet that made me feel like my feline daughter was being held hostage because in the middle of the night, they were unable accept the only way I could pay them due to a personal issue, was etransfer. I did meet some of the obligation however, I left them at least $50 plus in change. Let me reiterate, Dr. Kennedy broke all of the rules and knew my personal situation and went FAR ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR ME AND MY FELINE DAUGHTER and I will FOREVER BE GRATEFUL, and will - like he was also raised ...pay this gesture forward. Why? Because every life is more important that rules, money and policy. I know this why, I served my community as a first responder and put life on the line, broke the rules and policy...in favor of the patient and their families. To the rest of the Veterinarians that may not believe in this, or to the owner of this organization, it is because of Dr. Kennedy and the HR Person and the kindness in (again I apologize for incorrect names) Riley and the gals that brought me a blanket and water, you are leaders. You are true care givers. My girl and I are forever in debt to you for your pure kindness that you showed Vivienne Rose and me. So many can learn by your example.
My dog was referred to this hospital and they did everything they could for him to recover. All doctors and nurses and vets and receptionists were amazing and I can’t say how thankful I am for everything they did ????
I really appreciate their 24-hour emergency services and the professional staff here. My dog and I were treated with respect here and they offered great care with short notice. The emergency consult of course was pricy but well worth it.
Our vet made an appointment to bring in our cat. At first I had a great impression of the place and confident they could find a solution for her. We arrived on time and after about 10 minutes someone at the reception told us they were running behind and apologized. I took this to mean a few min more like max 15. But no, over an hour later a technician came out to take my cat.( if I had been over an hour late, I feel confident they would have dismissed our appointment or maybe even charged me a no show fee) I wasn't even brought into a room to meet the specialist or person seeing her for them to explain everything. They informed us it would be anywhere between 30min- a few hours. And could be anywhere from $600- $1000 and we had to sign permission of that upfront. Which is pretty big. We decided to stay. About an hour later the tech came out again with my cat. Saying her leg is bruised from the IV and that the Dr. took a sample in the test but hasn't decided whether or not to send it off but would send their findings to my vet for them to tell me what they found. I was a bit miffed they may or may not send out the sample for testing yet it was on our bill (over $100) that we had to pay for. The Dr. Never came out to see us, nor did I even get their name. It felt very impersonal, considering my regular vet at Amherst is so wonderful and they make you feel valued and heard and not just a number. I'm sure everyone who works there are top notch, but like being in a hospital, 'bedside manner'when you or in this case, your pet, are distressed is the difference between an excellent experience or a horrid experience. I understand they are an emergency/speciality facility and sometimes delays happen but it would have been nice to meet the vet, be made aware of where things were at through the process and at the very least be called in advance when they knew they were running behind, to let us know to come a bit later as we came in an EVO and were paying for it sitting there for hours. Anyways, it took me 4 days to get my cats test results back when I was told I would get them the next day. When your pet is sick, it's pretty awful waiting and waiting. They did in the end send the sample out, so at least I didn't pay over 100 extra dollars for nothing.. Lots of little things that could be addressed to make the user experience that much better in my opinion. Wanted to love this place, maybe a future visit will be better?
Dr. Sevima Aktay is truly amazing! We're very happy how patient, professional and helpful she was. Top notch operation!
We cannot say enough about Canada West! Our dog started having seizures 3 years ago, we were originally referred to a different specialist and were not happy with the care we were getting. We asked our family vet to refer us to Dr. Sharp at Canada West and it was the best decision we have made! Dealing with epilepsy and seizures is far from easy but we are so thankful to have Dr. Sharp on our team. Our dog cannot be taken into clinic because stress induces his seizures which makes everything that much more difficult and stressful but Dr Sharp has worked with us via email or phone calls to help care for our sweet boy. He goes above and beyond and you can tell he truly cares about animals and their well being. We are so grateful for the time he spends communicating with us to help our fur baby! We are so lucky to have such an amazing team of professionals help us in what is easily the hardest thing we deal with on the daily. Thank you Dr. Sharp and Neurology staff for all that you do! Tyler, Kylie and Cooper Wong
Best Doctors and care! They really surprised me with their professionalism. Front desk, Nursery and all the staff are fully trained and know what they are doing. Very efficient in reports, invoices and follow ups. 100% recommended. Thank you for helping my little Bella everybody! We do appreciate you working in there!
This is the best place you could ever take your dog, especially for something that isn't routine. My small dog (13 years old) got diagnosed with oral melanoma cancer with a routine dental cleaning. My vet Dr. Dhot noticed a small lesion and sent it out to be biopsied and it came back positive for cancer. I was devastated. I researched Canwest and Dr. Saam (Oncologist) and I read all of the wonderful reviews. When I took my dog to see Dr. Saam the care and treatment that she gave my dog went above and beyond anything I could have hoped for or imagined for my dog, who means the world to me. Dr. Saam is such a wonderful lady. My dog had surgery by Dr. King who was also an amazing doctor. Before the surgery he explained the surgery and the CT scan very thoroughly. This is how all veterinaries should be, like these two doctors. Dr. Saam and Dr. King explained things so thoroughly and were so kind and caring towards my dog. After having had lower jaw surgery (removed lower right mandible) and melanoma vaccines, my dog is doing so amazing. He is exactly like he was before the surgery and his pathology report came back super positive yesterday. His little tongue sticks out the corner of his mouth but it just makes him cuter. I am so glad that I found Dr. Saam and all of her team and they saved my saved my Bear!
DO NOT COME HERE FOR AN EMERGENCY FOR YOUR PET Why can I walk into a HOSPITAL for an emergency but I can’t walk into an EMERGENCY VET HOSPITAL? It makes NO sense. This has been the most unprofessional and insensitive experience I have ever had. I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. When I arrived at CanWest Hospital I had to call the reception in order to have someone come outside to grab my dog - I was on the hold for 3 minutes. *IN AN EMERGENCY YOU DO NOT HAVE THREE MINUTES!* We had a brief conversation over the phone and a lady comes to take my dog. At this point I have handed off my dog without giving full information of his problems and history. I received a call back 40 minutes later from the vet to talk about options. She said this is an emergency surgery but he wouldn’t be able to have the surgery until Monday/Tuesday. They wanted to keep him here for 2-3 days then do the surgery. ($8000) It makes NO sense for them to not recommend me find somewhere that could take him immediately. Talk about a money grab?! If it is an emergency it needs to be addressed immediately! I found another Vet Hospital that would let me GO INSIDE to do a consult/exam and would do emergency surgery immediately at the 1/4 of the cost. They sent me updates via text about him throughout the night. THAT is the kind of service I am looking for when there is an emergency. To be honest I decided to write this review not only because of my own experience with my pet but because I watched how everyone else was treated and the stress/impact it caused. Watching a frantic women run up with her limp dog and how long it took for them to pick up the phone and grab the dog and it was the most heart wrenching experience and I don’t wish this on anyone. Please do not go here if your dog is in a time sensitive emergency.
This is the most caring vet I have ever visited. They were professional and friendly. They even provided me with an email breakdown of the tests they ran, answered all my questions, and explained it so it made sense to me. Don’t hesitate to give them a call. I can’t recommend them enough.
Want to say how well run this place is. My dog had surgery and chemo there. I keep thinking that I wish our medical system could run this well. ( i am an MD). Very generous with their time, extremely organized, compassionate. They are expensive ( and we did not get insurance , so were paying). but give out clear written cost estimates before you agree to anything,
They helped, nothing special
My little Dana was in here due to pancreatitis, she also had diabetes and during her 15 day I was able to visit all the time and she loved her nurses. During her stay she had a heart attack , I was notified right away was able to go in and visit as she pulled thru. Dana was able to come home but her little body could not take anymore. Her nurses and doctors were wonderful. Thanks for everything. Love dana
Amazing care and attention has been given to our puppy. They follow up, and check in for days after surgery. It feels as though they genuinely care.
We have read the different comments that people have put on this website regarding Canada West Vet and don't understand how anyone can complain about the people at this facility. We recently sent our dog to them by air in a very bad condition including have seizures, between Dr Nick Sharp and Dr Aude Castel they saved his life, we think these people are absolutely superb in the way they tested, treated and cared for our dog. They treated our dog exactly like any human would be treated in any good hospital and kept in touch with us many times daily to give us updates on his condition and although at several times were close to losing the fight to save him they never stopped trying to the point where our dog has pulled through and will soon be coming home. Yes, it may have got expensive but these people certainly earned their money and as our dog is like a child to us it was well worth every penny, what would you do if your child was sick would you complain about the money spent, I don't think so! If you really love your pet you will pay for experts and these people are certainly experts and we cannot thank them enough. We would not hesitate to recommend that anyone take their sick pets to Canada West Veterinary Specialists. We were never concerned for one moment that these people were not doing everything possible to save our dog. We send all our very grateful thanks to everyone at Canada West.
This place is professional. They get right down to the point, there are no hidden surprises, and they inform you about every test or procedure and ask which way you would like to proceed. I've been here twice under unfortunate circumstances with different pets and this is by far the only place where I feel they actually know what they are doing. After a bad experience with VCA emergency, it makes me appreciate how great they are at Canada west. For future pets, this will be the only emergency I will step foot in. Thank you for the professionalism, compassion, and service.
We came here with our cat through emergency. When we arrived they took Onyx in right away. They were super thorough and attentive. She showee us his XRays and gave us so much information of what each organ should and shouldn't look like. I have been to other veterinarians before and none of them treat you and your loved one with so much care and respect. 100% switching to this vet. My boyfriend and I are extremely thankful of this practice.
The staff at Canada West is top notch. I am very grateful for their skills and knowledge. They did an amazing job with Lexus and now I have my bestfriend back! Thank you, once again!
Veterinarian’s sales pitch was gross. We had to wait outside with a baby in the car only to be told that she had no idea what could be wrong and would need to keep him overnight for 3k. Receptionists were cold. We waited for a call back from the vet and when we finally said forget it we had to go back home and to release our dog suddenly the vet was available to try to sell us on more. Waste of our consultation fee, we got absolutely no where and now I see they are on commission no wonder.
I would like to thank Dr. Francis for his dedication and his wonderful job. Charcoal, my cat had a femoral head fracture in September 2012. Dr Francis put a few pins and fixed the femoral head to the rest of the femur. This avoided future limping and gave Charcoal the chance to have a normal life. Now, Charcoal is a happy cat, hunting for small birds and mice, jumping from the floor on the top of my stackable washer and dryer (7 feet). There is no limping, nobody could guess that he had a surgery in the past. Thank you again, Dr. Francis and your team for your wonderful job.
I am giving a one because the receptionist was quite nice. Went there in the middle of the night because my dog was limping in pain. She had been limping for a week and we were waiting to hear back from xray results from our vet. We went here in the middle of the night and the vet told us most likely its a tumor in her nerves. Nothing we can do but she would have to be put down. We cried took her home called our vet in the am and said that was insane. She is now walking again. SO NO THANKS
We brought our lab in because she wasnt eating and was very tired. They first gave us the option to keep her at home for the night and monitor after giving some anti-nausa meds and fluids. She wasnt eating the next morning so we brought her for blood work, ultrasound and 24 hours on IV and meds. They found she had a bad allergic reaction and her instestines werent working properly. She is currently at home on medication to recover. All the staff that helped us were sooooooo caring and friendly. We could call or visit whenever we wanted for an update. I feel so grateful they were able to help our pup and that they are there to help others.
Only met staff for short visit late on a Sunday afternoon but all were excellent ! Our Cat Percy thanks you all !
Came here looking for pet food which they sell but they wouldn’t sell to me because I don’t take my pet here. First time that’s happened, I’ve been able to buy at all the other animal clinics!
My boyfriend and I brought our cat to Canada West last night after my cat had an unusual episode. Dr. Bahlmann was incredible and took great care of Cleo. Due to covid, we weren't allowed in the clinic but the Doctor called me multiple times with updates and explained everything very thoroughly. She told me exactly what needed to be done and provided the cost - which was extremely fair. After 3 hours Cleo was discharged and we were able to take her home. The staff were nice, professional and the drop off/pick up went smoothly. Would highly recommend Canada West to anyone! Thank you so much to the staff who assisted with Cleo.
We brought our 11 year old girl in and they gave her 50/50 chance at survival. Their proffessional compassionate service gave her back to us like nothing happened. Our chihuahua is back running and playing again. Thank you all so much. Brian and Diana Frid
My dog has been admitted here four times in his 12 young years. Twice for CCL and twice for pneumonia. I am waiting for him to be discharged as I write this review. Each visit, the nurses and specialists have been knowledgeable, kind and caring. They call me with updates and they’re extremely thorough with the treatment given and what they plan to administer with treatment moving forward. It’s difficult to see your pet in pain because they’re a part of the family. You want the best for them. I know my pup is in good hands at Canada West and will receive the best care at their facility.
Took my German Shepherd Oliv there in 2013. Phoned into to book a followup as it was included in the cost of my visit. The receptionist kept referring to me as mam (I'm a male). I corrected her more than once then just hung up on her. Dr. Micheal Horowitz yelled at me for being rude to his receptionist (are you kidding me?) and told me not to return. Essentially took my money and ran.
Dr Katie Walsh in the internal medicine department was excellent. Dr King in the surgery department is exceptional. They're both extremely knowledgeable, took the time to answer my many questions and concerns, identified concerns I wasn't aware of, and were honest about the future unknowns. They gave me all the various options and scenarios together with their expert opinions and advice which was much appreciated. They also solved a mystery regarding my dog's recent bloodwork results and recommended additional testing which was helpful as well. Thank you Dr King for saving my little girl, I'll be forever grateful for you. The after surgical care was excellent as well, despite how busy Dr King is, he was always there for us. We will use you again in the future for all our specialist needs. Thank you for everything.
The staff at Canada West is exceptional, knowledgeable and professional. They're attentive and was very respectful of the entire process including the end of life care and showed a lot of compassion during the very difficult times. Excellent service.
Thank you Dr. Manens. Very knowledgeable and easy to speak to. Spent a lot less on a proper diagnosis on my cat Fritz, then I already spend at a different regular vet. Very clean and organized facility. Won't take my pet anywhere but here from now on. Not sure why some people complain about the price. It cost less for the same tests here than I spent elsewhere. Also thanks to the other staff, everyone is so friendly
Dr. Annie Lin is fantastic. I’ve never experienced a vet who took so much time to care for our pup and explain his test results. All the possibilities. She was kind and gentle, very caring. Put us at ease. Very grateful for her patience in handling all our questions and bear is doing well!
I would put 0 stars if there was an option. MONEY MAKING MACHINE that what it is. They care about your animal as long as you pay their BIG bills. They hold animals hostage until you agree to their EXTREMELY expensive services and treatments. They didn't want to give our puppy back for home treatment. I had to insist and signed the care refusal form to get my puppy back. After that, the doctor only agreed to bring the puppy back to us after we pay the bill. She also threatened us to report to SPCA as an animal cruelty case, and she DID! The SPCA officer came to our house to make sure the dog is OK and getting recommended treatment at home. Poor service, insensitive doctor, overpriced procedures. Do not recommend
My dog wasn't feeling well but by the time I got to the vet she seemed much better. I decided i would go into the clinic and let the girls take a look at her and see what they thought. They said that they would check her vitals. I told them I didn't want to pay for 157 consultation fee if she was ok. Which it was apparent that she was much better and the girl told me that they would just check her vitals and I could decided from there. But once they took her into the back they wouldn't let me see her or go get her and Forced me to do a consultantion with the vet and didn't give me a choice because if I wanted my dog back i had to talk to the vet. Just so they could charge me 157 just to get asked questions.
Two years ago they operated on our dog. She was a compassion foster that we adopted with 2 months to live. We think of their crew and Dr Sakals every day!! And we are on our way for our annual card and donut drop !
I have a similar problem with my cat in neurology area as in previous review. Many visits and tests with no any result. The local specialist is unable to help at all. It is a pity and shame if a doctor with a diploma cannot help a struggling animal.
We are so grateful for the care our dog received from veterinary surgeon Dr. Michael King at CANWEST in Burnaby, BC. Our 1 year old lab Layla had bilateral TPLO surgeries (a few months apart) earlier this year. This procedure was life changing for our pup and she has been able to run, jump and play with other dogs again since healing from her surgeries. We want to extend our greatest thanks and gratitude to Dr. King and the staff at CANWEST, all of you were wonderful. We had to travel several hours to get to CANWEST but the team was very accommodating and helpful the whole way through. Even though we were not able to come into the building due to Covid restrictions we felt the staff did an amazing job of keeping us involved by calling us for check ins and frequent updates. Dr. King was very thorough both pre and post op and we couldn't be happier with the results. We are pleased to report that Layla is now able to run around pain free. Thanks again to all at CANWEST! Kristine & Mike Powell River, BC Canada
Best Tex-Mex in the Lower Mainland.
They took amazing care of my pompom... I can always trust them anytime. Their price is fair to what miracle that they can do. Although he passed away eventually I believe their job was immaculate and I appreciate their care and judgment. Thank you so much.
Taking your dog to the emergency room is an awful experience for anyone, but this place was better than we could have hoped for. The people here were kind, thorough and empathetic. Every single person we spoke to was amazing. Although I hope never to need to come here again, if we were ever in a position to need emergency care, I am so grateful that we know of this place and that they will care for our dog in such a wonderful way. :)
Although we were very sad to take our cat to the emergency we were especially delighted with how we were treated and how our furry loved one was looked after. This place deserves five stars and more . The entire staff was at our service despite that they were handling all sorts of other emergencies.
Nurses in this hospital have very bad service! I had an emergency at 4 am and by covid 19 they did not let us in, I understand perfectly but it was very cold and they did not even have a chair outside. The nurse told me to wait in my car, but we don't have a car so we waited in the cold floor for almost 2 hours. They had to admit my dog, the doctor was excellent and they called me a few times to give me news of my dog. They told me that I could pick it up earlier,so i call to advise that i'm going by taxi and I want to make all the previous arrangements before to get there, the nurse said yes and proceeded to make payments and everything by phone. When a nurse arrived, she was very rude to me and she had no idea what i was doing there although I had already spoken twice to pick up my dog, when I explained, she told me that she had to check my dog again. I had to tell the taxi to leave, but she came back with my 2 minutes later, she opened the door and they gave me my dog without contact and the nurse proceeded to throw to the floor hes medications!!! I understand the security measures by Covid but this was ridiculous and very disrespectful. I started asking questions about the medication and she was just saying that i should call if i have any questions as if being at the front door was dangerous. i'm happy with the Doctor but i can't believe the nurse's attitude.
Dr Cotter was highly professional and sensitive to our concerns. He handled a very difficult conversation with compassion and sensitivity and provided us with our options in detail and without judgement as to our decisions. He was very thoughtful and considerate of our daughter who brought our pet in for an emergency exam. highly recommend them
my cat dave 17 years old ,head a problem breezing ,the doctors did a super job saving his life.very profeshenal, caring, this hospital and staff ar the best highly recemend to all thank you so match zohar
I must say, this hospital is above and beyond. I took my 4 month old Blue Heeler who has extreme separation anxiety here as an emergency patient. She came down with some type of acute bacterial infection and was declining rapidly (high fever, lethargy, listless, green nose discharge). Their professionalism and kindness towards me put my heart at ease and my worries to rest once I knew I would be leaving Kaia there overnight. Kaia is in great spirits today and is very thankful that she is feeling much better. We hope to not have to see you again but we know we are loyal to this hospital if we do. A huge thanks to the wonderful ladies who had a hand in her care. xo
Keeping it simple, nothing more
We found Dr. Kaitlyn Bahlmann to be kind, compassionate and more than willing to listen to all of our concerns without attitude which is something that frankly caught us off guard. Our society lacks compassion these days. We asked many questions and with some back and forth, collectively we worked together to the best treatment plan for our boy. We couldn't be happier to bring our beloved Charlie to her care when we were concerned for his health. Thank you to the whole team you made us feel like we did the right thing. And we did. Sincerely, Justin, Jessica and Charlie ( woof! ) ♡
Outstanding service, caring and compassionate. We had a difficult day of saying goodbye to our 15 year old Australian terrier “ Lily “ Dr. Pham along with her assistant Ashley were nothing short of fantastic guiding us through this most difficult process. The level of care we received was second to none and we had never set foot inside their doors prior to this day. Truly impressive and we will be forever grateful. The facility is also perfectly set up to grieve privately which was a great comfort.
Every staff member was so kind and wonderful to deal with our dachshund Sophie who was rushed there for IVDD surgery. They were more than willing to give good updates at any hour and the neurology team was a pleasure to work with
I can't say enough great things about the staff at Canada West. They took such good care of my dog Kobi while he was still alive, and did everything they could to try and save him. He unfortunately died of an aggressive cancer and he was older, so there was not much that could be done, but the staff and doctors got us in as quickly as they could for testing so that we could find out as soon as possible what was wrong with him. When the awful results came, the doctor that called to tell us was so kind and empathetic, and although it was very difficult to hear, it was nice to have our pet in the hands of doctors who truly care about their pet patients and their owners. Thank you to all of the staff for trying your best, and for always calling in to check on Kobi when he was home from the hospital. We appreciate all of your kindness and support.
Very caring staff. Transparent with cost and provides a detail clinical summary with every visit.
My girl, Baby, spent about 7 nights at Canada West, not including her return for surgery. She suffered a horrible accident after a game of fetch (never use sticks....). The night we left Baby at Canada West, I was convinced I had lost my best friend--we had left her and she honestly appeared lifeless. When she made it through the night I was so relieved I never questioned anything, including the bill. I visited her everyday and saw her slowly get better (which even the staff were amazed to see given her initial condition). The staff were amazing and I cannot express enough thanks to them. Not only were they able to give me my Baby back, but they were simply wonderful when I was there--constantly checking in with me, letting me sleep next to Baby in the cage and genuinely reassuring me that I did nothing wrong (which to this day I have a hard time believing). You can imagine that my vet bill was quite large having spent at least 7 nights in ICU but I could never put a price on my best friend's health. Staff told me they even checked up on her on their off-days. No where will you find staff that love animals as much as they do there. My parents have since had their dogs at Canada West and were blown away by the kindness and love the staff at Canada West have for animals. I would highly recommend Canada West and while I pray I never have to go back (for obvious reasons) I know that if I do, it is the best decision by my animals.
Our family is so very grateful that we have this amazing place in our city. Our dog just got home after being in ICU for a week and lived to come home to us. Everyone is professional and kind. Thank you. We are forever grateful.
My dog was badly bitten by another dog, and I rushed to the nearest animal hospital. I count myself lucky that it was this one. They were so kind to my dog, who was very afraid, and gave her life saving treatment. They walked me through the surgery plan and costs. They were open about what was necessary, and what could be monitored. I really felt that they had my dog's best interests at heart. While I hope to never have to go back, i wouldn't hesitate to trust them with my dog's care again.
Some observations first. Scanned through the negatives. The 2 doctors mentioned by name aren't on the roster - so that's something assuming the site is updated. They let you bring your own food & meds. They don't have a policy requiring sedation for ultrasounds. Easy cash grabs. 4 years ago they cleaned out both elbows. He went from being lame for the better part/year to having 3 very active years. My mistake was waiting too long to escalate things. This week, they removed a kidney stone & apparently it couldn't have gone any better. They had a couple of options going in. They contacted my family vet, reviewed our history & made an informed decision. My mistake here, forgetting they're also a 24/7 Emergency option (went Vancouver Animal Emergency first). IMO, they did a good job of explaining everything & answering my initial questions & follow up questions. Coincidentally, we had Dr. King both times. If time is on your side & you're a skeptic... hit the forums. Do some research. Fact check them. I'm a very happy, satisfied dog owner.
My oldest female Samoyed has had UTI's her whole life and suffered from only having one functional kidney from birth. The internal medicine team was so dedicated to helping after she was partially paralysed from an antibiotic prescribed by another vet (who knew that could even happen, extremely rare), they stayed hours late to help figure out a plan that literally saved her life. I'm no stranger to high prices but they were considerate and receptive as I indicated she was uninsured due to her long history of problems (uninsurable). She stayed a few days only as it was critical for her to get I.V. and 24 hour care. I was able to take her home and follow up as her condition improved. I can't say how amazing the recovery was and how sure I am of the dedication to appropriate care and overall professionalism of this team. Thanks so much Dr. Manens and everyone else for proving to be one of the most elite groups of practitioners in a very crowded and difficult to navigate industry.
Dr. Nick Sharp and Ruby Ng were absolutely amazing. They did extensive testing on my dog and although it came out to be idiopathic. They did all that they could. Even though they have new protocols due to Covid-19 and owners are not allowed in. They were quick on sending us reports and providing us detailed updates in regards to my dog. Highly recommend this place!
They took amazing care of our young cat when she was very sick. Gave us all the information we requested and now she is healthy and happy. We thank them in our hearts every day.
We brought my dog into Canada West in hopes of answering our concerns about him eating a corn cob that evening. He was acting completely normal, we just wanted a professional opinion on whether it was dangerous that he ate the corn cob since our regular veterinarian was closed at that point. Despite a normal physical exam, an X-ray which revealed no obstruction, and absolutely no negative symptoms, Dr. Nair highly recommended that he stay overnight in case anything happened and if an obstruction were to occur, they could do surgery immediately. Dr. Nair described the possibility for invasive surgery the next day and had us feeling that our dog was on the brink of emergency at a moment's notice. He convinced us an IV was needed to help any blockage go through. I was in tears. In hindsight, we have researched it, and have found that I.V's actually do not aid in clearing out blockage or moving material smoothly through the intestinal system. This dishonest decision on Dr. Nair's part added a totally unneccessary charge of $549 as the overnight stay included a blood test, medication, catheter, infusion pump, I.V. fluids, and blood gas. A completely healthy dog exhibiting no negative symptoms does not need any of the above, and we are finding it impossible to justify this veterinarian's decisions and actions other than instilling fear and acting on greed. 3 X-rays later, they still only saw material in the stomach, and corn cob in the colon, there was no indiction of blockage or obstruction. This time, Dr. Bandt's professional opinion was to keep George yet another night (and charge another $549) for more I.V. therapy and monitoring. At this point I am no longer worried about my dog but more frustrated and decide there would be no difference between me watching him at home and technicians monitoring him. He instructed me not to feed him at all until we examined results from another X-ray that he pushed that we do the next morning. I questioned the need for this, as George had already received 3 costly X-rays in less than 17 hours. I asked why I could not just go home at this point and watch for any symptoms and bring him in if he did anything unusual. Dr. Bandt was adamant that a 4th X-ray was necessary to catch any blockage before it caused a grave state of emergency or a situation with a lower prognosis. Scared again with the thought of emergency, I agreed to his professional opinion as he acted like I was putting my dog in danger otherwise. My dog had to miss a full day of meals for this highly recommended x-ray. I obliged and later called in to set up an early appointment to get everything done so as to not starve my dog any longer. I was told no Doctors would be in at 7am, and the earliest I could come was 10am. I came at 10am and was told to wait for 30 minutes only to have Dr. Chang come out 30 minutes later and tell me that they were too busy to see my dog. She said that I could leave him there for an indefinite amount of time until they got around to the X-ray, or I could wait with him for an indefinite amount of time. When I told her I had called earlier to set up a time to come, and was confused because I was told this X-ray was really important, she explained that they were an emergency hospital, and if George had been acting himself and normal all this time, that he was fine, and that the X-ray was not a pressing matter (unlike what Dr. Bandt convinced me of). She said to go home and watch out for any negative symptoms and to bring him in if anything happened. This is the only doctor who might have been forthcoming with us and I seriously wonder why I was not told this same advice initially when I brought him in with zero symptoms, only my own concern. After being turned away, told that he's been fine all along, we were confused and angry at why we were made to spend a total of $1497.27 for a healthy dog.
We took our 14 year old Westie Cross Connor to the hospital ,he had an abscess appear and Burst literally overnight. He is Also a Cushings dog which can be tricky to deal with. Dr Kennedy and Dr Cheng were both amazing and detailed in there diagnosis of Connor. He was admitted overnight and we feel was the best care away from home. I would recommend this hospital if you have a pet emergency. Also big virtual hugs to all the support/ reception team.
My first time visiting this vet for an emergency was not the best. First of all, I was unable to be with my dog while the vet did their assessment. I was told to sit in my car and wait which could be up to an hour before the vet calls me. Once the vet called me I felt overwhelmed with everything they were telling me (they were using lots of medical jargon) as my dog was very sick and their suggestion was to leave my dog overnight in a oxygen chamber for $3500 while they ran tests. I understand my dog was not well, but this cost is ridiculous to me. And then add that to the tests they would run and the assessment fee, this is not something that I could afford and have a hard time thinking many could. The cost to just walk in the door was $200 which again, seems ridiculous to me. I chose this emergency vet over the other one I used to go to because of the location but these costs will not having me come back in the future. I will drive the extra kms to get better quality of care and more cost effective treatment for my dog. Once I took my dog home I was asked to sign something acknowledging I wasn't following their medical advice, which I have never had to sign before. It felt to me this vet was more interested in my money and covering their butts than helping my dog.
I was not pushed to do any unnecessary tests or anything. Yes, the waiting time was long for us but they go by priority and our case was just a diarrhea for 6 days while other pets were in for very life threatening and unstable conditions . The doctor prescribed antibiotics and probiotics to my dog which worked the next day. The only thing I didn't like is that they don't let you in the exam room and you don't see what they are doing to your pet even for mild cases like ours. (((
The entire team has been amazing and I would highly recommend to any pet owner wanting the best for their fur family. Dr Saam and Annie from Oncology are amazing, this place is top notch and it starts with the team.
I must say I am very happy with my experience here. My Scottie Barney had been to a couple of other clinics that could not nail down what was wrong and referred me here. I confess to be terrified of what the bill would end up being but the Vet correctly diagnosed him in the 1st exam and only then did he give me a list of 3 tests we could do to confirm. @$600, $ 1200,then $2000. I chose the $1200 battery of tests and sure enough that was it. I had already spent more than this not to mention 3 months til my dog was nearly dead. He is now back to his old self and I can't thank Dr Manuss and his team enough. He was diagnosed with a fungus I can't even pronounce . Common name Valley Fever. I must say the drugs are crazy expensive $200.00 a month for a year not there fault . Getting from Shoppers drug mart. Sandy
Dr Mannens has been nothing short of incredible in helping my cat. His knowledge, care and attention to detail has been a god send in helping my cat make a recovery other vets told us we might never see. The quick actions and emergency care Canada West provided absolutely saved my cats life and I'm permanently grateful to them for everything they've done for us.
Honestly the peace of mind makes the bill worth it. The clear communication I had with the vets regarding testing and how far I could stretch my finances made decision making, well not easy, but helped balance the pros and cons. How well they dealt with my case makes me wish that I had came sooner
Thank you so much for all your loving care for my little family member “Duncan.” Could not have had such excellent treatment in my darkest hour Doctors and staff where right with me and understanding with warmth and insight .. Thank you Duncan is now Resting in Peace with no pain
Everyone from the receptionists, kennel staff, technologists to the specialists were all amazing. They were very nice, professional and patient with my dog, my myself as well as with everyone I saw walking through the door. The specialist ( Dr Sharp) took the time face to face with me after my dogs procedures to go through the results and treatment options. They were upfront with the estimate charges and worked with my insurance company (Trupanion, who I also recommend) so that I only had to pay my portion of the bill and Trupanion would pay them the rest. They kept my stress to a very minimum! For everyone who complains about costs...you're paying for top of the line facilities, equipment and staff. Yes, it can appear expensive but it's a fraction of the costs if you compare human medicine! They're not actually making that much after paying off all the overhead. As for wait times...I have no problem waiting, knowing that behind those doors, they're trying to save another animals life. They're an emergency and referral center, you can't really schedule the emergencies coming through the door. My wait was a fraction of what you wait at a human emergency center or specialist office in kamloops. They were very good at keeping an eye on my dog and started his monitoring in reception when there were no rooms available. They have very comfy chairs and complimentary tea and coffee just in case. I would highly recommend Canada west to anyone looking for top quality service.
Didn't answer emergency call
Good experience there. They are doing so good during the CoVid-19 situation. They are patient and thoughtful. Dr. Annie Lin helped with my cat. She explained everything in details. Friendly staff and professional doctor.
The Vet working here had no idea how to talk to people. Was cold and emotionless and had no bedside manner. My friends cat had to be put down then he tried to convince us not to, Despite telling us over the phone it was necessary. Then argued with us when i told my friend she had done the right thing for the cat. I was trying to comfort her as she was crying unconsolably. Really wanted to let this person know how bad he is at his job. Sad that people like that can be employed as a vet.
My cat, bobo lee was rushed to this hospital on Aug 28/17 for congestive heart failure. Dr Bandt and the supporting staff were very compassionate and caring to me all the time. Dr Bandt welcomed all questions with patience and staff even sent me a card with their signatures after BOBO death.....you know, that is not an easy job for a busy clinic like this one. Surely, I got some comfort from it. Thank you, all staff, God blesses you all . Well done!???????????????? maria
A huge thank you to Dr Enberg and the staff who helped care for our bulldog Tater, and pretty much give us the best news ever that he didn't have cancer. Everyone was so nice and we would recommend them to anyone needing urgent care for their pets.
No reservation required! If there is an emergency, see a doctor directly! And the advice given by the doctor is very reasonable, there is no situation to fool you to do more inspections! Really happy to meet such a good doctor! Saved us money and eased our worries!
I have taken few of my dogs here in the past few years and I have to say these guys are incredible. My dog broke her spine and couldn't walk, they performed surgery on her and she started to walk within few weeks.. These doctors are so smart.
If you care about your pet DO NOT TAKE HERE!!! After 2 hours waiting I simply asked one of the staff my pet is in pain, has the vet looked at him yet? and she explains how they are busy and will be another hour for the vet to see us. Finally we get to see the vet and as soon as he finished introducing himself he (BRAD COTTER) yells at me for being rude to their staff (For asking after 2 hours being concerned about my pet) and he said that MY PET IS NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT PET THERE! and he said he will be back in 10 minutes and he just left the room!!!!! WOW ... I just took my pet and went to another 24/7 hospital at 9pm!!! What a WASTE!!!! and clearly HE DIDNT CARE ABOUT MY PET BEING IN PAIN!!!! I understand even if my pet isn't the most important but other people who came after us they were looked after, not only they're not fair they don't care about animals. The vet was yelling that we weren't even there for an hour which was a lie. IF YOU REALLY HAVE AN EMERGENCY READ THE OTHER REVIEWS AND DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET THERE BECAUSE THEY DON'T CARE AND IF IT'S NOT AN EMERGENCY SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE this place is extremely expensive AND STAFF are rude I read a very similar experience as mine.
We took our dog Zoey here for a specialist referral, and while we were worried that she was going to be nervous and anxious because their covid protocols had called out that we would not be able to go in with her, we had a good experience. We called them when we got there, and a vet tech came out to meet us outside. She spent some time giving Zoey ear rubs and patting her while telling me what they were going to do after they brought her in. When it came time for Zoey to go in, she went willingly and didn’t even look back to see if we were coming! After about 15 mins they called us to do a medical history while the doctor was going through the physical exam with Zoey. We later got a call from Dr. Saam who spent a good 45 mins going through the results of her physical exam, the diagnosis and what our options were. She was super thorough and knowledgeable. They later on sent a detailed report in addition to the consultation as well. Shortly after the phone consultation, they brought Zoey outside and she was as happy to see us and was in good spirits - not at all anxious or stressed. We had a great experience with them and so did Zoey.
After almost a year, I am just now at the point of being able to talk about our horrendous experience at this clinic. I am in complete agreement with other posters citing poor communication regarding diagnosis, prognosis, treatment options and the outrageous cost, or "money grab" as another poster put it. The neurologist examined my dog and said she seemed to be getting around reasonably well. (She had a gait problem). Instead of the vet simply saying, "you know, I don't think she really needs anything done, she seems to be OK" and recommending we just watch her, he gave me a laundry list of tests he "recommended" totaling $5000. I agreed to an MRI only. Thank goodness I am in the medical profession myself and had the presence of mind to say NO. I can completely understand how other people without medical knowledge would be totally overwhelmed and probably agree to everything as we all want the best for our beloved fur-babies. And, we are at the mercy of the vet who we hope has our pet's best interests at heart and is considering the entire picture. Unfortunately, as an anxious pet parent, my emotions got in the way and I didn't have the presence of mind to run for the door with my dog. She had the MRI of her hip, or so I THOUGHT that was all they did. When they brought her out she could hardly walk. She was in so much pain for days after and was never the same. The vet did other tests that I did NOT give permission for, including a needle aspiration, an invasive procedure! Who knows what sort of damage could have resulted from that! He had NO RIGHT to perform tests I didn't authorize, not to mention the added time she spent under general anesthesia! I couldn't believe it. I feel like they experimented on my beloved dog and I am disgusted with this vet. Why couldn't he have just left well enough alone? Of course, I am upset with myself for having not listened to my instincts and just taken her home. As they had no permission for the additional tests, they didn't charge me for them, and I wouldn't have paid for them anyway. To sum it up, my experience at the clinic was disturbing, at best. I wish I had listened to my gut and just left. I've also realized it's really important to look at the whole picture. If your pet is younger and has a diagnosis that is reasonably treatable, then go for it. It's all about their quality of life and are we doing all these things for them or for us? And is it really fair to them? I finally had to put my sweet girl to sleep last month as she was in constant pain and having so much difficulty getting up and down. I absolutely regret having taken her to this clinic and I truly believe she would still be with me if I hadn't.
understanding staff. Did their best to help. recommend them for any specialist treatments.
My poor Uncle paid $5600 for his blue nose Pitbull Finnegan's leg surgery. The dog had been breathing hard and low on energy for months. The veterinarians at this hospital assured my Uncle that, other than his leg, Finney was healthy. 5 weeks after the surgery my Uncle brought Finney into a different Veterinary clinic in White Rock to find out he was full of cancer in his lungs, back, neck and head. The Vet at this clinic was absolutely astounded that your hospital didn't do a thorough check on a sick, 8 year old dog. Through your negligence you essentially stole over 5 grand from my Uncle. My Uncle is a beautiful human being. He's rescued dozens of cats and dogs throughout his lifetime and given them lives full of love and away from abuse. He is close to 70 and is disabled due to his ailing back. And he isn't rich. Far from it. Yet he still found the money to try and improve his dog's life. 3 weeks after Finney's cancer diagnosis my Uncle had to put him down. I'm absolutely disappointed in your conduct and am in disbelief that you would have missed the cancer. It's either negligence on your part or straight up theft.
They are incredibly expensive, but I wouldn't trust the life of my best friend to anyone else. The specialists there REALLY know what they're doing. Six months ago my family vet told me my dog wouldn't make it through the night. Thanks the Canwest, he's still here and doing great.
These guys saved my little cats life. We had taken her to another vet and they gave her IV fluids and sent her home with us, but something still didn't feel right. Can West was so helpful and patient with us over the phone offering us advice before we even brought her in. We ended up having to rush her there early in the morning, and they got her in right away. They communicated everything with us along the way including pricing and financing options. I have nothing but great things to say about this vet, not only did they give our cat the best care possible, they were still there to answer any questions and concerns we had after bringing her home.
Our little Japanese Chin had 2 bouts of back problems. After seeing our regular veterinarian, we were referred to this animal hospital. Dr. Sharp looked after Chin, thoroughly examining him and gave us advice on how to handle what was undoubtedly a disk problem in the back. Today our little guy is back to his normal self. This Vet Hospital is highly recommended!
2 years ago my sweet 1.5 year old cat had basically a chronic genetic disease that resulted in having to put him down. The staff at Canada West was amazing and compassionate and helped my boyfriend and i come to terms with the decision we had to make. They made Onyx very comfortable and let us spend as long as we wanted before it was time. It was a horrible experience but thank goodness we had such a wonderful vet to walk us through it.
Dr Saam and the oncology team have been taking really great care of my dog. They are very thorough and have found some other issues that her previous oncologist did not even check for. They are really great at communication and Dr Saam always has time for a quick chat before every chemo treatment.
My dog was treated by Dr. Gendreau and Dr. Adelman. Both were extremely knowledgeable and had excellent communication. I appreciated them explaining complex issues in ways that I could understand, and for having a plan in place for me to follow once my dog was back home. I am thankful for all of their hard work in getting my dog back to her normal self!
This facility is top of the line. My heart-felt thanks to Dr. Atkay for the surgical work on my old dog. He pulled through and is happy to have a new lease on life. Kudos to the intensive care staff.
Dr. Kelly and the rest of the staff at Canada West went above and beyond with their service during my final moments with my beloved dog Cocoa. I will always remember the kindness and warmth I experienced there and highly recommend their services to anyone who wants their pets to be treated with the highest standard of care and love.
I brought my 7 pound toy Maltipoo in today in a state of emergency. My experience with Canada West Vet began with a frantic call to their reception. The woman that picked up was so friendly and in control our our conversation. She asked me where I was and told me exactly how to drive to the clinic and stayed on the line with me the entire way. Once I arrived, I was met at the front promptly. I was a bit frantic and rude to the woman that took my dog, as I just wanted him to be looked at and fixed ASAP! Even though I was speaking in a bit of a rude tone, the woman taking my dog met me with kindness, telling me her qualifications, what she was doing with him/where she was bringing him.. The doctor who checked my little fur baby gave me a call about 20 minutes later and told me he seemed great and commented on not only the health of my dog, but also the spirit and character of him. I felt like she really cared about his wellbeing beyond reading vitals. Once all my next options were clearly outlined to me, I was able to choose which option I wanted to go with and didn't feel pressured at all. She gave me all the info I needed to make a decision that I felt okay with. Once my dog was stable and I was able to leave/pay ($200 for my dog's emergency exam fee, but maybe this price varies), I was making small talk with the receptionist who originally took my call and I asked if her day had been okay. She mentioned that it has been a tough week and tough day and that they try their best, which made me think that the team has probably had to deliver unfortunate news to some owners. Hearing that made me even more impressed with their level of professionalism, friendliness and attention with my case. Luckily, I was able to take my baby home today. Feeling very thankful! I'm not much of a reviewer, but in this case I was absolutely compelled to write one. And of course I will continue to write more because I know how much of a difference it makes. Words cannot express how happy we are with the team at Canada West. Our chihuahua Mio, whom is in his prime years of 13. One day suddenly his breathing dramatically changed and he was losing energy fast. He went from zero to hero. Days passed by and he got to the point where he can barely get off his bed. We took him to a local vet (I wont be naming the clinic.) This Doctor did an X-Ray and looked at him. She concluded he had an enlarged Liver, and said it straight "He's got a couple days left to live." We wanted to do an Ultrasound to figure out the true cause but she deemed it unnecessary, so we didn't. Suffice to say Mio out lived her two day predicament, in fact he went a week over. By this point he was getting a lot worse, but we could see it in his eyes that he's got a ton of fight in him, and wanted to live so badly. We did not want our beloved family member to go out this way. He had massive fluid build up, and we really wanted to find a way to remediate the issue. We called the local vet again, again she stated it's pointless he's not going to make it. So we frantically called around, asked friends, families. One of our friends brought her dog into Canada West awhile back, so as a last resort we brought Mio here. They took Mio in did an ultrasound and deemed that he had massive fluid build up around his heart, chest, and abdomen which severely affected his breathing. Now this could be due to heart disease, heart failure, or some other unknown cause. Their treatment was to extract the fluid out around his heart. We agreed with the surgery and came back to pick him up the same day. They ended up extracting fluid from three places, heart, chest and abdomen. Our initial bill was about $700 for the single extraction, was now $1500 due to multiple extractions. Understandably they went above and beyond to help him. Immediately the day after surgery, he was slowly regaining his strength and speed. day by day he was looking so much better than he was before. We went in for a checkup a week after they did another ultrasound on him and concluded everything looked good. Update: Mio is now stronger than he was before, his body has shrunk to its original size. He can run up and down the stairs like a young stallion. His appetite is also voracious. 13 is the new 5 for dogs (chihuahuas)! We understand that eventually, everything has its time, and we too will pass. But we wanted to make sure that we've done everything humanely possible to give our family member Mio, the best care he can get, so we'll have no regrets. Its already been almost a month, since we had the local vet give out the predicament. Our advice to other dog owners, always seek a second opinion, whether it is at Canada West or not. If we were to listen to our original vet, Mio wouldn't have been able to live out his days. Initial cost: Ultrasound + Surgery = $1400 Check up: $130 Total: $1530 Satisfaction level: 100 We know it isn't cheap to care for your pet, and it can get expensive. But we believe Canada West is quite fair in their pricing, especially because they have a state of the art facility for pets. Come and you will see for yourself like we have. We want to thank the team at Canada west and also especially Dr. Jennifer Gamracy, who worked diligently on Mio! These guys are a 24 hour hospital, so you know that they deeply care. If it was about money, opening a clinic from 9-5 and closed on weekends would not only fetch you a pretty penny, but give you less of a headache. Below is our beloved Mio, first picture is post surgery where he looks like a chipmunk, thats how much fluid he had built up. Second photo, you could see where they extracted the fluid, third photo him present day! For pet owners out there, my blessings go out to your loved one and all the best!
On one hand, it is with great sadness that I have to write this review but on the other, I hope my pain could potentially save someone else's pet's life or at least make the end of life transition the best it can be. I am taking the time to write this review because I know there are people reading the reviews just like I would. The helicopter parent whose dog is just as cherished as a human child. Let me begin by saying if there were ten stars I would give Canada West twelve stars. I called them in the middle of the night and explained my dog likely had a partial block (X-ray) and I felt like the other hospital wasn't taking it seriously. They said I could bring him in right away. I drove to the first hospital to transfer him to Canada West. The first hospital told me he was fine and could wait until some time tomorrow for an ultrasound and that he was stable. When I arrived at Canada West they quickly did an examination and came out roughly 30 mins later to tell me my dog is was in critical condition and they have been working on stabilizing him. This is something I saw with my own eyes. I carried my limp dog into Canada West and within the hour his eyes were open he was looking around and acknowledging us. Canada West is extremely well staffed (we have all been in the situation of what feels like it's one doctor to 50 animals). All the doctors were so kind and walked us through everything step by step - different ways this could go. Even though the prognosis was extremely low they walked us through what could be done and if we wanted to operate they would do it right away. We chose to give our son every chance possible and decided to operate - unfortunately for us, he was too far gone and didn't make it. This was the most traumatic 24 hours of my life. My dog went from 100% to deceased in 24 hours. The doctors listened while we cried, they stabilized him to a point where we could say a meaningful goodbye. I am eternally grateful to the doctors and staff at Canada West. They made the most traumatic experience bearable. When I said goodbye to my dog I never felt like he was in better hands than I did at that moment. I cannot recommend this hospital enough.
I wanna start by saying that the staff are absolutely wonderful and really well trained in having difficult conversations with you when you're experiencing super emotional decision making with your pet. The problem is the cost. This is an emergency vet hospital, so they charge a premium, which I understand, but that premium is actually 2-10x higher than a typical cost. I also found that they didn't give me alternative options (like taking my pet home to heal with me rather than forcing ICU overnight charges on my bill). My pet had bladder stones that were partially blocking his ability to pee, so he needed bladder stone removal surgery ASAP. He's a 9 lb dog, the quote for 3 nights of monitoring and the surgery was $8000. For reference, in vanderhoof it would be closer to $2000 (as per a vet tech there). The vet at Canada west pushed back his surgery a few times as more urgent surgeries came up, at a cost per night to me (this made sense considering it is an emergency hospital, but not that my pet was not being prioritized so I had to pay more), so I ended up paying $2400 for overnight monitoring for 2 nights + diagnostic testing. The vet also gave me the option of trying to find another vet to do the surgery. I tried to shop around and was continually told by other vet techs not to do this (DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM). I finally found another clinic that charged $2800 for the surgery, compared to the $5400 Canada west quoted (this quote started as $4-6k for everything, but ended at $8000 minimum inc the tests n overnight monitoring up until that point). My two major problems with Canada west were that they misquoted me several times and literally doubled the original quote, the other was that they never gave me options for alternative solutions. I did really appreciate how sensitive the staff were and that they happily transferred my dogs care to another vet. I really wish I'd been able to find advice to try other clinics, you will pay a high premium to have anything done at this clinic, and if a few thousand dollars is meaningful to you, I'd suggest shopping around and looking for non emergency clinics outside the city to do the work. It ended up saving me $3000 and a ton of heartache from my pets surgery being pushed back. Good luck out there!
Dr. Imlach, Dr. Enberg and Dr. Bandt tried diligently and compassionately to save our dog Boss, but unfortunately his little body gave out. We visited Boss often during his five night stay at Canada West and found everyone there to be quite helpful. The technicians were constantly monitoring the patients and the staff we encountered were warm and knowledgeable, particularly Nicole. (I'm sure Boss would want to offer thanks for her kindness as well as the servings of beef baby food.) On our boy's final night we noticed that he had come to recognize the technicians as servants to feed him, scoping out what was on the meal trays being brought into the room. While the outcome was not what we wanted, it was not for lack of trying by the staff at Canada West and we appreciate them making our boy's last days as comfortable as possible.
