The General Veterinary Hospital has been a literal life saver for our furry family. We foster both cats & dogs and we also have a pair of permanent residents. We've had nothing but positive experiences with this clinic and the care, empathy and sympathy demonstrated by the entire staff had been sincerely appreciated. The fact that they have separate waiting areas for dogs and cats demonstrates that they've gone the extra mile to make any visits to their clinic as stress-free for both the animals and their humans.

Very good vet! The staff are open and friendly. My cat baileys was allowed to wander the waiting rooms with the occasional pet or flattery directed his way. Once he was taken back they were fast and efficient in what had to be done. The vet tech came to talk to me and made sure i understood what was done, why and what they recommended to be done regarding his current health problem. Overall a fanastic and relaxed experience.

Very good staff, can kennel your animal safely, gives them a shower before they go home, prices are better than many other locations Professional caring staff, we have taken our cats and dogs there for a decade we have kenneled cats and dogs, we have gone through the pain and suffering of the death of our companions with them, in the case of an emergency operation they were very kind, empathetic and caring as well as doing all they could to help alleviate the situation including calling in outside help. General Vet has always been our go to vet for over 20 years (two dogs and two cats). They're busy, but for good reason. I have never met a more caring vet than Dr. Abbey. They're quick, efficient, and are able to help us out in a pinch with boarding as well. As long as you are patient and willing to wait to have a conversation with knowledgeable professionals, I would recommend nowhere else.

We always get nervous as we switch Drs for our loved pets. As our previous vet moved away, We are so pleased with our new vet Dr Wink. She was so personal and well spoken on the phone as I dropped off Rosie for the day to get looked at. I imagine her client list will be too full soon with her professionalism and "taking the time" attitude. 2 phone call updates from her and not other staff! I am glad we caught our Rosie's liver problems early by the right tests. She could have easily been passed off as having a "bad day". Thank you always General Vet!

Well where to begin, I took my 3 month old puppy to see them he was totally fine. They don't offer the free 30 day trial that all other vets seems to with Trupanion Per Insurance which basically gives you a zero wait time free 30 days of pet insurance. It so happens my puppy got a virus so like any pet owner I took him to the vet. They told me to give him a bland diet for the weekend and to call back Monday that it was probably his food ( I didn't believe this from the get go ). But I did what they said and come Monday my dog was still sick. I called and they told me to come by and pick up some medication that would help him so I did, by Wednesday ( 13th day of being sick ) you could could his ribs and in fear for him I took him to Vetemerg ( they were amazing ) I had a large bill upon leaving but that was only for test required to find out what was wrong. Under the advisement on General Vet Hospital I was under feeding my puppy. the meds they gave him were actually too strong and should not be given to puppies . I was advised to never give him them again by Vetemerg, that god I went with my gut and took him to see someone else cause other wise my dog would still be getting worse then better. At first General seemed like a decent place to go but after this I wont even be going back for the credit they have on file for me for an overcharge. just as a last note it is a decent indication to go somewhere else where 90% of the cards on the wall were about people who's pets died. AVOID THIS VERT AT ALL COSTS

I've taken my pets here to be cared for several years now, and they've been very good to them. When I had to make a decision to euthanize one of mine, they were more supportive than I ever expected them to be. When I read some of the worst reviews, I understand how painful it can be for the authors to lose a loved one... but they seem to be incredibly extreme cases. If you're the type of guardian that treats your animal's health like it only needs a walk-in clinic, don't expect the health professionals to nail every disease or ailment on one visit. The staff have been great. I've talked to most of the front desk, technicians and doctors many times over the years. The diagnoses and care have been thorough and competent when they're the regular physicians for your pets.

$80 to feel my cats stomach and weigh her and learn nothing. $80 for literally 5 minutes looking at my cat and then she tells me they have no idea whats wrong without getting bloodwork. Then the real bill arrived $500 for bloodwork, getting that done will tell us whats wrong but yeah will knowing whats wrong help my cat at all? How much more money to actually help her? Surgery can cost thousands. Trashy people praying on peoples emotions to make a quick buck.

Terrible customer service! I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone. I was prescribed the wrong medication (even though I told them what medication has worked in the past). They told me they don't keep that in stock anymore. When the medication they prescribed didn't work, miraculously, they had the original medication that I asked for in stock and charged me again. Also, on a separate concern I was told numerous times that I was going to get a call back, but that call back took 5 days after me calling several times. Don't waste your time or money at this clinic. They don't care about your pet or you, they care about the dollar sign.

DO NOT LEAVE PETS ALONE WITH TECHS!! ASK TO HOLD OR ATLEAST BE IN THE ROOM WITH YOUR PET DURING TESTS I brought my cat here for a checkup after health problems last sept. I strongly suggested i should help hold him during the tests and the vet said no hes relaxed, he'll be fine. He WAS always relaxed in vets, i walked him in on a leash. the techs took him away and 30 minutes later came in complaining how strong he was and he ran up her arm so they trimmed his claws he is now TERRIFIED of vets and i suspect he was dropped or thrown, the techs got very angry and defensive when I asked why my cat was behaving differently. my cat has been changed for his LIFE due to 30 minutes alone with these techs. My cat was also given a bronchitis med that made him stop eating, cost me 3k in emergency and i have to work EVERY day to get him to eat enough to survive. they suggested a feeding tube immediately, which i did NOT let happen. PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE PETS ALONE WITH TECHS HERE

Like any Vet clinic they are expensive, but the major thing is that they care. The Vet I see explains everything in detail, and answers any questions, and are very care to not only the animals but to the owners as well. I will most definitely keep bringing my dogs back!

We adopted a senior dog 10 years ago. We immediately brought him to Dr. Abbey because he was the absolute best. He was our previous dog’s vet and a godsend. So glad we had several years with Dr. Abbey. Felt so warm and wonderful there under his ownership. ESPECIALLY loved the kennel service. What a complete relief to kennel your dog where his beloved vet and vet staff worked. Our boy loved it there. Then VCA takes over. Suddenly the prices skyrocket. The vets we go to are accusatory, incredibly harsh, and bordering on abusive if we don’t do bloodwork or urine tests every few months. Which is completely nonsensical for a dog estimated at 15 years of age. Every visit costs a minimum of $400 and not much is offered. There is no familiarity, warmth, or connection with the vets on site. You can’t express concerns or opinions regarding your pet’s health and be met with reasonable responses from the staff here. Unfortunately, we stuck it out for a few years but the last straw was when we began getting calls about appointments being booked for mandatory bloodwork and diagnostics. At this point it was laid out to us quite coldly that we were thought as cruel owners if we didn’t bring our boy in for bloodwork several times a year. This dog that we cherished above all else. Whom we spent countless thousands on for daily meds and at the UofS for eye surgery so that our boy could continue to live the rest of his limited days with near full eyesight. Anyhow we switched to Parkland Veterinary and met some of the kindest and caring people ever. They even offered laser treatments for arthritis which kept our old boy comfortable and ambulatory until the day he passed last week. They understood how much we loved our old pup and they supported us and were kind. So glad we got out of VCA. Our boy had joy and quality treatment at the end of his days...as did we. Was so nice to have vets and vet staff that understood geriatric pets and cherished him and treated him like the golden oldie he was.

We've taken our cats to the General Vet Hospital for all check ups, vaccinations, treatments and boarding for over 17 years. I sincerely do not believe you will find more compassionate or caring veterinarians anywhere else in Alberta let alone Edmonton. The care our cats have received has kept us coming back even after we moved out of the city, and will keep us coming back for years to come. On the day I accidentally closed a door on my dog's tail, I phoned numerous local vets. No one could get us in on such short notice. But they all had one thing in common. They all recommended that I take my dog to the Guardian Vet Hospital. The people at Guardian calmly explained their procedures for the visit. I was to go there, phone them when I arrived, they would then send out a triage assistant who would evaluate my dog. After this assistant's assessment they would tell me how long I would have to wait for a vet. (They assess pets like an ER, the most serious case goes 1st.) A friend drove us to the vet. It did not take very long before the triage person to come out. She examined my dog and quickly came to a conclusion. What really impressed me about this vet hospital was not only how they quickly and accurately assessed my dog. They were also willing for us to wait inside if I had to take a taxi. Of course, I had to to wear a mask. This way I didn't have to wait outside with the meter running. Before the triage person came out, they were upfront with how much the visit was going to cost. They also asked what they were supposed to do in case of a cardiac arrest. I found this forthrightness very reassuring. You knew exactly what was going to happen and how much it was going to cost. I was very lucky not only to be referred there, but also with the triage person's assessment. I did not break my dog's tail! I could take her home as long as I watched for any changes in her behaviour.

This vet clinic has provided excellent medical care for my family's cats for years. They are good people who do the best job possible under the circumstances. I credit them with saving our little guy M - he developed pancreatitis, and it was touch and go for weeks, but the care he received at the General Veterinary Hospital made the difference. They were also wonderful to us, and allowed us to spend a lot of time with M while he was getting treatment, watching bird videos and listening to his favourite music. Two years later, our little M is going strong.

We recently boarded our diabetic cat at this establishment for 10 days. We came back to find out that they did not give her 8 or 9 days’ worth of her insulin, so 16-18 doses. We provided her history and a detailed scheduled of when she needed her shots. After 2 days of being away, we received a phone call from the vet saying they could not administer the injections that day as she was being a little difficult. Understandable as she is in an unfamiliar place and 1 missed day would not be the end of the world. We were also told we would get a call back if the problem persisted, which we did not. As we did not receive any more calls it would be very easy to assume everything went ok for the remainder of the duration. That was not the case. Only when we picked her up we were told they did not give her any of her required injections after the day of the call. The reason advised to us was that she was being cage shy and aggressive and they came to a consensus and deemed it necessary for their safety and the animal they do not try anymore. I dropped off an 11 year old diabetic cat that has a meow way bigger then it is capable to backup and not a 500lb Tiger. They did not bother to call my emergency contact which is absolutely unacceptable, not to mention bother calling us again. Our regular vet has no issue properly handling my cat to administer any type of medication or for any kind of examination in a safe manner even when she is being difficult so their apparent "struggle" leaves me questioning their actual willingness to even try. Our regular vet, unfortunately does not offer boarding service, so I looked to this clinic anticipating appropriate care for a cat requiring daily medication. I was fed nothing but a bunch of excuses from someone I can clearly tell is unqualified to be in a profession that involves the well-being of something that is living and breathing. If I wanted someone to just feed my cat I would have left her at home and had someone visit. We paid good money to have professionals look after our animal while we were away but instead we got back visibly worn and weak animal because she was not properly cared after. The last thing the vet told me was "Oh no need to test her levels, just give her a lower dose for the next couple days. It's ok". Would it be ok if it was your animal, "Doc"? I am beyond upset and this and it is absolutely unacceptable. Not only will I never be returning, my recent experience has also prompted a friend to no longer return as well. I have also posted a comment on social media and I hope others will follow. Absolute shame.

We followed Dr. Zhou here when VCA downtown closed and we will follow her wherever she goes we are so comfortable with her. She is so talented and caring! We couldn't be happier with our experience!! They do an amazing job of keeping you updated with text and picture messages during procedures. The first update we got was that our Husky was not getting sleepy before here dental even after being given more medication they said they had to cuddle her before she would get sleepy. The staffing levels at this clinic are horrible. They often have only one vet on site so it is difficult to impossible to get timely treatment when needed. When Dr. Abbey owned it, it used to be so good, but the place has gone to heck in a hand basket since then.

So I've taking my dog there for years. All of a sudden the last 2-3 visits they've finding new fees and test and checks up that is mandatory before they can refill my dogs ALLERGY meds. He's super heathy nothings wrong with him, if I've I noticed anything strange I would of got a check up and paid for it with no arguments. Now they WONT REFILL for my dog with out charging me for non sense. I've found another vet that had NO problem refilling. Every time I walk out of this vet its $$$$$$$$. Not my fault there losing $. I have been bringing my cat Taz to the clinic for over a year now. He went in for a laceration on his back, and I ended up finding out that he had pretty severe hyperthyroidism and an issue with his heart. All of the staff at the clinic from the vets to the techs and the front desk staff are extremely kind, welcoming and highly professional. Taz is not always the easiest cat to care for but month after month when he comes in for bloodwork, they always handle him with absolute care as though he was one of their own. I would highly recommend this clinic to anyone looking for veterinary care for their animals.

We have been going to General Vet for many years for our various pets, most recently our cat who Dr. Dhillon had been treating for kidney disease. This week it was time to say goodbye and the staff went over and above to have us booked in immediately. Dr. Dhillon stayed late to accommodate us and both he and the staff were kind, caring, compassionate and extremely patient as we said our final goodbye. Understandably we were a bit nervous when the clinic had transferred hands and we started seeing Dr. Dhillon after Dr. Abbey left the practice due to medical reasons, however the transition has been seamless and the standard of care we receive from Dr. Dhillon is outstanding.

Rude staff. I can only comment on that. In the clinic and on the phone. It was enough to send me running from this clinic. I will drive further to get better treatment for myself and my fur family thank you very much. How on earth are there so many positive comments? There was another lady in the clinic with me and I asked her what she though of the place. She has been going there for over 20 years and was happy with them. I saw her being ignored aswell! ??? Maybe it's just me but if they treat ppl that way how do you expect them to treat an animal that can't comment.

Took my 9 year old dog to the vet because he had bad breath..staff said they couldn't find anything and said to brush his teeth...charged us and gave us simparica trio...gave the medication to our dog..a few days later he just was not himself...brought him back and asked to get his ears checked as he was leaning to one side and shaking and whining...the staff took him back and said they couldn't check his ears because he was aggressive and did blood test and a urine test without running it by us first. The vet said that she thought it was something neurological, a leision on the brain or tumor, and that we would have to pay a couple of thousand to get an mri...we didn't know what to think and wanted to get a second opinion which we advised the vet...what we didn't expect is that my fiance would get a call basically saying that we didn't care about our pet if we didn't come back and get more tests and pay more money. I am convinced that my dog did not need the simparica trio at 9 years of age and it is the reason we took him to another vet, who in the long run decided that it would be best to put our dog down...NEVER let the vet do or give your pet anything before you do your research. It might just save their lives.
