REVIEWS OF VCA Canada Calgary North Animal Hospital IN Alberta

Shawn Webber

My kitty had an unexpected accident one evening and no other vet was open. I went to the VCA even though they were moments from closing. They barely blinked before inviting us in. My kitty needed a great deal if help that night and they went over and above. Amazing people and animal lovers, all of them.

I've had to wait insane lengths multiple times but have always been treated with kindness. Surgery prices are fair but basic appointments and medications are very expensive for me as a low income individual. That being said they worked with me to access a charity and to finance what I couldn't fit on my credit card. My dog will need further care and if ever she needs surgery I will be back here again.

Everytime I call the assistant is not very helpful, we asked for our dogs prescription and they said we had to take her in for consultation then the doctor said she is a healthy, happy dog but with her breathing condition that we already know so you didn't have to bring her in since we know what she needs. Well, we spent like 3hrs waiting for the consultation that she didn't need, then the call, wait to pay and get the medication. We got home and the most important medicine it wasn't in the bag! We called, had to wait because it's not an emergency then wait for them to bring the medicine outside. I give 4 stars because the doctors are great but the other people that works around not the best. Well after my review about 2 weeks ago I brought my dog to the emergency the doctor gave tooooooo many suggestions but never went to the point, talks, talks talks, and she won't stop! She is veeeery annoying and it's hard to answer because she keeps interrupting. We have to change or look for a better vet for sure! Any suggestions? My dog has breathing problems...

I am very disappointed in this place. Last time I go. For starters they over-book appointments. Yes, they have emergencies but it is a hospital and you think they'd take that into account. It's at least a 10 minute hold to speak with anyone and minimum 30 minute wait for appt. Usually longer. Highest prices around and little to no interest from the vet. I'm so done. ADDENDUM... My dog got very ill suddenly and my new vet 'hospital' does not take emergencies! Long story short, went back to North Hill. My poor pup was found to be terminal. Feel compelled to say how wonderful they were to us during such an awful time. We were treated with a lot of compassion. While some of my previous experiences did indeed suck, they have my forgiveness and thanks.

The doctor didn't care about the heat exhaustion of my daughter's cat. Upon arrival back at home Ali had another diarrhea episode and my daughter would have to wait 5 hrs for another assessment! Not acceptable ????. Had to go to another VCA hospital on 10 St SW at 18 Ave SW

Aaron Wyman

Doctor doesn’t care unless you choose a more expensive option. Never coming back.

Kate Prescesky

Thank you all at VCA! You are there when needed. Took such fantastic care of my “Bunny”. Would not hesitate to recommend you to any one with pets, from Dr. Weber to all the front desk staff, you’re the best!

Emily Knight

Caring and compassionate. I was thankful to have such kindness thorough a hard time, saying good bye to a beloved pet is never easy

Tevin Straub

The staff was incredibly professional. We had to say goodbye to our beautiful dog and the doctor was very understanding and walked us through all the steps. I want to thank the staff, receptionist, nurses, everyone involved for their hospitality, and making sure we were cared for during our difficult time. Rest in peace, Toby.

Carly Scott

I've had multiple emergencies with my Caique. And they've been extremely helpful, and always treated it seriously. Only one exotics vet. Buts he's been an amazing help. The prices, I found, were not unreasonable. Avian and exotics might be cheaper, but they are now my last choice because they proved to be absolutely useless in an emergency. If you don't have an appointment that day, they don't care. VCA has been an absolutely wonderful help, and at the times I really needed a vet.

Matte Hummel (Angry HEO)

More than beyond happy with the service that was provided. I called 2 nights ago in a panic as my bearded dragon was in respiratory distress and the receptionist that answered went above and beyond to try and get my beardie the care that he needed, and once we got there they saw him right away. Dr. Lam was nothing short of a super hero, and I will forever be grateful for the care she gave my beardie.

Jenny D Laguerre

Even during the pandemic they are providing exceptional service and their staff are kind and courteous despite the additional challenges.

Lori Bothwell

The genuine people here provide the utmost kindness. Thank you for everything.

I had to bring my elderly kitty in recently, shes was knocking on deaths door. The lady's on the phone when I called were super nice and informed me that I could bring her in anytime since they are a " walk-in" basis . Just be mindful of that because you could run into long wait times but that was fine with me. We saw Dr. Matheson I believe and he was very informative. He explained the diseases that come along with older cats ( mines 13) ...kidney failure , diabetes , hyperthyroidism... they ran some bloodwork and we are waiting for the results. Since my kitty was super dehydrated from not keeping food down and diarrhea, he suggested I do at home SubQ fluids ( the assistant who gave me a quick lesson on how to give the fluids was amazing by the way) and I am to keep feeding her wet food. It's only been a day and shes already feeling much better. I'm not sure what the future holds for my little kitty but I know that we still have some time with her to keep giving her all the love thanks to VCA and their team. Highly recommend.

Marilyn Cox

Although I was grateful for emergency treatment of my cat, the doctors use fear to force people to spend money. The doctor seemed more interested in getting us to spend a bunch of money than looking after my pet. Be wary ask questions...lots of questions.

Miss Shelley

We want to thank the veterinary team at VCA for the kindness and care provided to our Lukas during the last hours of his life. We are very grateful for the quality of care, professionalism, and compassion provided to our family and our beloved furry friend. The team was knowledgeable, explained our options in great detail always keeping the welfare of our pet as the most important factor while being aware of our heartbreak with seeing our dog in his most difficult times. They provided a safe space for us to share one last goodbye with our beloved pet

Micki McDonnell

We took our sick bird to this horrible place yesterday. It was in critical condition and they told us that they need to put it down. They charged us about $250 for exam and injection $115 was injection fee. It died even before they injected it. Due to COVID we were not allowed to be in hospital waiting outside. We got a call from hospital that it died even before they gave it injection. We were in very distressed situation and returned home. Today we called for refund on injection fee and the girl over the phone lied to us telling us that they gave it injection. They are very unprofessional and unethical for money. Is there a place where we can launch a complain?

Aaron De Souza

Would have given 5 stars if I had not waited in parking lot for 7 hours. Weekend walk in visit was handled well, just unbelievably long and a check in from staff wirh time updates would have been made the wait more bearable. Rates were not high for after hours service.

Carolyn Brown

I had to bring my dog in for an emergency visit, the staff were knowledgeable and understanding and the wait time was very reasonable. Thank you for the prompt and professional service!

Taisha Fugle

Love VCA North so much, Care Club saves me a bundle when we need to go in and they cover a nail trim every month. My girl and I both enjoy our trips to the vet, wild I know! Lol

J D

They are nice, but the prices are insane. They still take absolutely amazing care of your pet, but expect to max out whatever credit card you may have. Rest in peace sweet kitty ???? :'(

I passed what I thought was a dead bird on the highway, and decided to turn around to move it off the road, thinking that it had been too beautiful in life to just get smooshed into the asphalt. When I ran out to pick it up, I realized that it wasn't dead, just severely injured. I was on Hwy 22x, east of the Indus turnoff, about halfway to the Langdon turnoff, nowhere near any vet clinics. I called the Fish and Wildlife numbers, which were closed for the day, and the Report-a-Poacher answering line didn't seem to be the appropriate way to deal with this emergency. I then googled emergency vet clinics in Calgary, and 3 options came up. The first two that I called immediately put me on hold. Not promising. I then called the Calgary North clinic and was answered by a lovely person who took the time to listen to my story, and then welcomed me to bring the bird in and they would take care of it. I wrapped up the bird, a Swainsons Hawk, in my denim jacket and took off for the clinic. They were busy when I walked in with him wrapped up in my jacket, but one of the techs dropped what she was doing and came to help. Within 5 minutes I had filled out the forms and the tech was telling me that a vet was looking at him right that moment and doing what they could to help him. THIS is the kind of emergency care that I would want for my pet, and this will be the clinic that I call if I am ever in a situation where I need access to emergency vet care again. Highly recommend them based on this experience.

Brought my cat in when he had a blocked urinary tract. He was unblocked and sent home safe. Staff was friendly and Dr. Kirby is great!

Jay S

My little Angel was sick and they made her better. Have had very good experiences with this clinic for emergency as well as non-emergency services. They also Bill to insurance for you so it’s hassle free. About 6 years ago, I encountered a large greyhound that had been hit by a car in 14th st. Near the Nosehill overlook. I scooped him up and brought him straight there. It didn’t look good, they took him in right away but sadly he didn’t make it.

Laura Hermann

Very disappointed in this organization. Too many "unfortunately" and not enough action to provide support on humanitarian issue.

Hesam Rezaei

Had to come here due to original vet clinic being booked. Staff was friendly and professional, had proper sanitation stations.

Rasmus Rydstrøm-Poulsen

If you need emergency services they are great. But please don't use them for regular appointments. They cost up to 30% more than the other vets. Also whenever I pick up meds, it takes at least 30 minutes... This is an emergency room not a vet clinic.

Leanne Fulton

I want to say a huge thank you to the staff at VCA for giving our sweet cat Delia a very peaceful passing. We were able to sit with her alone for as long as we needed, and I held her as she died. The compassion and kindness shown to her and to us was a huge gift. Thank you for your incredible care, and for the follow up phone call to check in on us. We miss her so much, and we are so grateful to have had a wonderful pet to miss.

Farmers Market Lady

This place... Is incredible. The staff are wonderful. They took such good care of our cat Wilson when he got sick. They always clear things with you before moving forward with them and i cannot express how thankful I am that this place exists. And wilson is doing wonderful since getting help from CNVH. ????

Viviana Acuña Egurrola

The staff are amazing here!! They are very understanding, kind and informative. Unfortunately their price are ridiculous. I will never go back because they have jacked their prices so high.

Robert Stephenson

We brought our pup in because she was vomiting for more than 24 hrs and had diarrhea and started trembling with pain, breathing really hard as well. They got us in in a timely manner. Dr. Richard Weger was our initial vet and he is truly a blessing to the hospital. I can tell he truly cares for his patients and I would entrust him with my pet. Dr. Jennifer Shutt was also lovely and we felt safe with our pup in both their hands. The vet techs there were also sweet and caring. She came home after staying there for 3 days and Nicola Russell (the operations supervisor) was consistent and kind when keeping me updated about the state of my pup. Though I did had to haggle a bit about our final bill due to one charge of $155 being "professional miscellaneous services" which I thought was absurd, but I know this isn't directly at the fault of the vets/nurses.

Richie Goldsworthy

Brought a lost kitty here the other day. Very friendly and helpful!

T P

Wouldn't see my poor dog in pain had to go to Strathmore amazing vet there

Bryan MacLeod

Went there last night due to emergency with my dog. Never again. They treat clients like garbage. “bUt iTs cOviD” is not an excuse in this case. To the receptionist lady: it’s funny how much of a bully (I’d use another word though) you were initially, but then suddenly you were an angel when I needed to pay. Speaking of the doctors exam: I had to wait outside while the exam was happening. Doctor called me back and said that “the dog is just anxious, I don’t see anything” and suggested to do pricey exams. The dog was clearly not fine and they didn’t even tell me what could it be. Money grab? Most likely. I had to pay roughly $110 for nothing. In fact I went to another clinic this morning and they immediately explained what could it be.

Wade Hayden

I DESPISE GIVING THIS PLACE ONE STAR DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE

Audrey Jestin

Top notch care at any hour of the day! Thank you VCA for figuring out how to provide care to our pets during the global pandemic. Our pets (and their owners) are extremely grateful.

Been very happy with the emergency treatment for our cat. Fair pricing for emergency in Calgary and the staff cares.

everjoykeith

Called this vet hospital about an issue with my puppy and they told me we HAD to bring our puppy in because there was absolutely nothing we could do for her at home. I feel like they only wanted our money and didn't really care to help us with our puppy. I called a friend of mine after speaking to whoever at this hospital and she walked me through some home remedies to help. It worked. I feel that vets and vet staff should have more compassion, especially during these times. While I understand that professionals with educations and businesses are trying to earn their living, but to potentially let an animal suffer and be in pain just to get someone's money, that's wrong.

Scent Mamma

Horrible attention. the Doctor was super Rude ( a female doctor) I waited for 2 hours and nobody checked on us. She pretty much said we are too busy to if you don’t like go somewhere else . TERRIBLE experience so we will never back there .

Helen OBrien

Brought my cat here a couple years ago; service was alright but very costly then too. Today, just because I needed feline food and was passing by the area, I decided to drop by this hospital and omg did I regret the decision; they have a markup of literally 60-80 cents per can of wet food; be it the small 85g cans or the bigger 165g cans… shocking!!! Other clinics in the city offer the exact same vet food for much more reasonable prices. I will never be going here again. Why charge so much money on food when it is a requirement for some patients? Vets take enough money on our Pet’s health check-ups and health issues as is… why so much markup especially in such pandemic times too? Very pathetic. Go to other clinics; they are much more reasonably priced on everything!

K Leo

It is good to know, there is a Hospital, where they help your pet as soon as they can . The patients are too many, so there is quite a lot of waiting, but the veterinarians are wonderful. In this crucial time during the pandemic, they are very patients with the owners, explain everything trough the phone. I was very satisfied with their service. My puppy got better with "Strangles" in 3-4 weeks. Thanks for them!

Lisa

I brought my cat in as she was not herself, the reception staff was great. Chris in particular was fantastic, very attentive and thoughtful to pets and pet parents. The vet was good, he gave a few treatment options and explained what could be going on. I also found it to be very reasonably priced which was great. Hoping to not be back with a sick pet, but if i ever need help they will be my go to.

Mackenzie Anhorn

Our 4 month old kittens got into some grapes today, needless to say we rushed them over to VCA in an absolute panic. Everyone and I do mean absolutely everyone in the clinic were so unbelievably kind and helpful towards us. They walked us through the process step by step and gave our rambunctious grape-thieving kittens lots of love and care--despite the fact that they were all likely very busy and we hadn't even had an appointment! I've never left a review before, but the experience was just so warm and the kittens are feeling purrfectly healthy now as they sleep at home under a sunbeam. I felt like the Doctor and all of the techs really just love animals and genuinely care so much, it shows. Thank you so so much for being amazing and sweet even while having to induce a plump orange kitten's very impressive vomit response. I hope you all have a fabulous day, your kindness meant the world to us and to our kittens!

Shweta Sandhu

I went to this veterinarian yesterday for an emergency for my dog. They were able the get me in right away with no problems. They helped my little dog get better and I definitely would recommended.

Shannon R

DO NOT bring reptiles here. I would give this place a 0 if I could and it truly doesn’t have a thing to do with the prices. Never again will I trust this place with an exotic pet, or any pet for that matter. All I gathered from my experience there is that the staff can’t answer basic questions, and they truly don’t seem to care at all about the well being of small pets.

Cailey Parker

My name is Tim A. My dog "Bailey" had a seizure out of the blue and she was in for an exam within 1.5 hours from the time of the seizure. She ended up coming out of the exam with Normal vital signs. Just like nothing had happened. Thank you to VCA for relieving my stressful situation and giving my dog comfort. Tim & Bailey

Shrenuj Dave

It turns out that there a far less options for K9 Advantix II than the staff here would allow you to believe. It’s only offered for 4 sizes of dog. My dogs weight does not fluctuate enough nor is it on the cusp if two weight classes. But i guess if you answered my question over the phone i wouldn’t have to pay the $105.00 consult fee for one of your doctors to stand there and pet my dog for 15min. Thank you for putting retail ahead of my pets health.

Erin Mandan

I lost my dog because of their poor treatment. It's not like human hospital. I should have known. The name is deceiving. Every day I wish I didn't bring my dog here, when she was sick. RIP my love and sorry. You deserved better care. And they called me to pay the maximum bill.

Shawna Mancini

Like most VCA hospitals or clinics, the front staff are a unique mixture of rude and clueless. We only ever go to VCA as a last resort. You must really dislike your pet to take them to a VCA willingly.

gillian embree

Knowledgeable, experienced, and polite staff. We have never had trouble with this location, I always felt that our pets were in good hands. I feel as though I can fully trust them here.

Jen Ball

My dog had and emergency and needed to get him cared for, drove to the clinic as I have always had great care even though it is not the closed. Had to wait a bit then come back and pick him up later in the day, but had the time and knew he would be properly cared for. Thanks to the front office as well as Dr. Matheson for looking after him and for the clear explanation of how to care for his wounds! He is on the mend - Thanks.

Velvet, Dawn Bernard

I found an injured pigeon on the street and I took the bird there, the staffs were friendly and respectful, the accept the bird immediately and take of it in place of Calgary Wildlife. They say the bird would be ok soon.

Vee Zimmer

My sweet little boy cat was not feeling well. Given covid as an issue I wasn't able to be with him but he's bounced back and is up to his usual mischief. All staff were wonderful.

Heather Howden

My baby Jemma was hit by a car on Friday so we had to rush her to emergency. Unfortunately she had a busted pelvis and we had to make the decision no one ever wants to make. Dr. Matheson was thorough, compassionate and very quick with the procedure. As terrible of a situation it was I felt like we were treated with the utmost care and empathy. Thank you to the whole team...

Patrick Smith

They were amazing! I took my little girl in for emergency late at night and they made both of us feel so comfortable. I will be switching them to be my regular vet ♡ I just wanted to update and say I have been taking my dog to Dr. Burns and I love her she is so warm and welcoming with my pup

James Bradley (TheDesertFox95)

Go somewhere else if it's not an emergency. All emergencies are taken above your existing appointments. Very disappointed in the care for the higher cost and LOTS of waiting.

Tressa Jones

Staff are very pleasant. They took good care of my boy

Alyssa P

They are always caring, helpful, and empathetic.

B Jamin

I take both my dog and my cat here for all of their regular medical care, and over the years, have had a few occasions where I've had to bring them in for emergency care, too. Recently, my cat had a urinary instruction and had to get an emergency procedure done, and the staff was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately I don't recall the surgeon's name, but he was super reassuring that, yes, this was a serious condition, but a common one, and that he'd treated it hundreds of times. He prepared us for all possible outcomes, outlining what an ideal situation looked like, what was most likely, and what any complications might look like. While every single person in reception is wonderful, Chris, in particular always recognized us when we came in, was communicative and lovely, and seemed to genuinely care about us and our cat. He was super knowledgeable and lovely to talk with, and helped us out with our billing and our product purchases. Dr. Jennifer Shutt was absolutely phenomenal in updating me on my cat's condition - she called each morning with updates, and was happy to stay on the phone as long as needed to answer any questions. I love that she began all of her calls with "Things are going well" or "Your cat is doing brilliantly", etc, to relieve any immediate anxiety I felt from receiving the call. She is so kind, and a really excellent communicator. For our discharge appointment, we worked with a nurse named Clayton, who was SO awesome. He was super funny, relatable, personable, and positive. And so extremely thorough in answering all of our questions. He has a wonderful approach with patients and is really easy to talk to, and he has an incredible breadth of knowledge. The clinic is awesome. It's not cheap, and it's not that close to my house, and sometimes wait times are long. HOWEVER, I'd never want to take my pets anywhere else. The care and attention is unparalleled. A few more important things to note from my recent experience: - They were ALWAYS available by phone, at any hour, if I had questions, concerns, or just wanted to check in. - They are very considerate when it comes to the expense factor of veterinary care. Their manager went through my estimate with me, item by item, and explained the estimated cost for every single thing on the bill. - They provide very thorough discharge notes at the end of your visit, so you don't have to write anything down or remember it yourself They are awesome. I can't recommend this team/clinic enough. Veterinary care can be so difficult and stressful, but they are the exact team you need and want in that type of difficult circumstance.

CeresOrbit (Faye)

Called in at 7am for an emergency as my bunny was in GI stasis and was told that no exotic vet was in AT ALL that day. Also I would have to wait till the drop in time at 8am. How can they be called a 24 hour vet hospital for exotic animals with no exotic vet on staff. Very unpleased with this place as this was my go to Vet for over 5 years.

Kryptos Rock

Took great care of us! I have had 2 seperate unrelated cat emergencies, both handled very quickly and well. In both cases the cats were treated well. In one case, they treated a cat for an eye sore and I felt like I was given a good price for the walk in examination and medication, then they faxed the report to my normal vet for the check up. The second incident, an infected attack wound, was treated quickly upon my arrival and I was presented with good and fair options. They even added a suture to the sound with no extra cost. For a very reasonable price, he was fixed up and healed under their care, medication and after care instruction in no time! Thanks to the Calgary North staff I have two very happy healthy boys and I'm very happy with my experience!!! Thank you!

Carla Struth

Compassionate and caring in our sorrowful time.

Cheryle Sherwood

Always professional and very responsive. I have a leopard gecko and the doctors here are knowledgeable and caring. I always know steve ( gecko) is in good hands!

Denis Getmanskiy

Had an emergency and never been before. They were great at handling my dog and me being worried. Needed to find a new vet anyway so works out, will go regularly now.

Hanna San Juan

Good customer service. No complaints.

Daniel Lecuyer

I had to take my cat in this morning to get checked out because he was in bad shape. Unfortunately they had to euthanize him but everyone was so unbelievably kind and caring, it made the process of saying goodbye to my best friend so much easier. I can't thank them enough.

Sean Duggan

So thankful to have such a great facility, vets and staff to care for my Louie. He was in an awful accident and the speedy care he received and the compassion the vets and all staff demonstrated was felt even though I never got the opportunity to meet any face to face due to Covid. The vets kept me well informed and provided options. I appreciated receiving he quotes low and high end so I knew what to expect. I did not feel judged when discussing financial limits and found the vet and staff super understanding and their empathy was felt during my phone conversations. I cannot express how much it meant to have a staff member offer to have pictures taken and sent to me to bring me some ease and peace of mind. These little things go a long ways in bringing Comfort. Beyond thankful to have a 24hr care facility available and hope I will not need to access in the future :)

Joanna Iles

Although it was a very sad moment...I had to unexpectedly put my special boy down...I have nothing but praise for this place. Dr. Singh was so kind and straight forward without losing his compassion for both myself and for my fur baby. He explained all my options, the odds for recovery, the costs, etc. He gave me time to process, no rushing. The staff involved were so considerate. They even all signed a sympathy card after and sent it to us. Made my heart full. Thank you all.

Will Pavlovic

Terrible care. Do not go here. We found a lump on our hedgehog and brought her in. Told us they could test it by putting her under but she might not wake up. They recommended not doing anything and just waiting. We didn't want her to go through that so we said let's just see what happens. About 6 months later, she was not doing well so we took her in again to put her down. They first told us that my sibling and parent could go in. Then the day of, they said only two of us could go in. We were not allowed to be with her when they put her down. We were told that they needed to examine her for $300 even though they told us before there was nothing they could do. Her eyes were lifeless and her lump was massive but they said they had to charge us. We also were not allowed to take her ashes home unless we spent $300 on an urn. If we didn't buy one, we wouldn't be able to take her ashes. I do not recommend at all. Take your pets to someone else. They only want your money, not to care for your pet.

Red Starr

The way I was treated by staff here was disgraceful. I understand wait times and the fact that they are busy, and I have no issue with being patient, but at an ANIMAL hospital where they are treating ANIMALS, you’d think they would be a little more considerate of the fact that a 6 month old kitten can’t possibly sit and wait in a car without a litter box for the estimated 4 and a half hour wait time I was initially given. My home is less than 10 minutes away, and when speaking to triage I specifically asked if I had to stay in the parking lot to wait the whole time, and I was told to “stay close, 5-10 minutes away” which meant I could thankfully take my sick, uncomfortable and understandably stressed out kitten home while we waited to get him in. When I was called again to bring him in, I left immediately and told them I was on my way and exactly how long I would be. I received another call very soon after, and whoever was on the other end of the phone was blatantly rude, impatient, and disrespectful. I was nothing but polite on this call. When I picked up, the woman on the phone asked where I was. I told her I had just spoken to someone, and that I was 2 minutes away at most. Her exact words were “you left, so we will be putting you at the back of the line. People are waiting”. Before I could even get another sentence in, she cut me off in an extremely snappy way, and then immediately hung up the phone. No other information was given at all, so I turned around and went back home. After getting back to my house, I was called yet again and was told they were now ready for me. The confusion was enough to put me off from ever coming here again, but on top of that the way I was spoken to, completely unprompted by me, was horrific. Do better.

Shelley Newby

I had an emergency situation with my Guinea pig in December and rushed her to VCA. They whisked her in immediately upon arrival and started treatment right away. Sadly, despite the best of care, we had to let her go. Every staff member we dealt with was caring and compassionate and helped make such an awful situation as bearable as it could be. This week I received a follow-up call from a counselor to see how I was coping with our loss. I think this is a great resource and really appreciated the call and the chance to discuss our heartbreak. We also received a lovely sympathy card from the staff. We received such wonderful care and aftercare from VCA. I can't thank them enough.

Christine Bennett

Took our Frenchie there for an injured patella after 6pm as our vet was closed and had great service despite being us being a walk in during a busy night. Highly recommend! Thank you for caring for our pet so well.

Chris Boyd

Great experience with the staff and vets. Explained everything very clearly. Fees were fair. Vet even followed up later in the evening to see how our dog was feeling.

Sophie Berg

I am so impressed with the service we received from Calgary North tonight. After being refused emergency vet care near our home we rushed our puppy into Calgary and despite being slammed with other emergencies they got us in and taken care of. We recognize that it was a challenge to accommodate us and greatly appreciate their care, professionalism and efforts.

I have been taking my pet here for the last 1 year. The doctors are good, however their support / techs are very bad. My little guy had diarrhea, took him in and he was given medications and told to monitor how he progressed. 2 days in a row he kept vomiting every time after medication. When called in, I was told we need a tech consult to show us how to give the medication through the mouth, which made no sense to me when he kept vomiting after taking the medication. Booking an appointment with this team is another nightmare. We were always put on hold for more than 30 minutes. And in this instance, we were given an appointment with the tech 5 days out. When asked what to do for 5 days if we are unable to give the medication or if he keeps vomiting. The response from the person over the phone, you can try giving the medication by yourself or wait 5 days. I felt and I believe these people have no regard for pets and this clinic is only in the business of money making. This is not the only time, my experience with them have always been the same at different times I have taken my pet to this clinic. I had to share my experience this time given the same experience over and over. I would avoid this clinic by all means and recommend taking your little furs to much better clinics where they show true care.

My family and I are dealing with a very hard situation with our new 10 week old cane corso . The team at VCA Calgary North Doctor - Richard Nurse - Claire Manager - Randy Did a amazing job at ensuring I felt Comfortable with all the decisions , made sure I had options laid out And also did me a serious favour by helping with the bill . I would recommend this team to anybody !! Please note their prices are high. However they provide 24hour care and provide the best service I have ever seen at a vet clinic ! They are top notch ! Thank you team ! Cheers to a speedy recovery for Bruce !

Rob “Deluks” Schmidt

The crew here at VCA was phenomenal. They took care of Mr Bruce, while he was on the verge of death. And now he's coming home today. Yes it was a little pricey, but what good type of healthcare isn't? Also I was reading some of the comments below. Follow the rules "stay in your vehicle in the parking lot". and do your due diligence in asking questions. And I assure you you will have a great experience! And remember this is a hospital first and a clinic second! My 5-month-old puppy's coming home because of these people! I wouldn't be giving them five stars and telling you to come here if I didn't believe that these people had our animals best interest at heart! They're even willing to let us come see our dog to give peace of mind. That's not easy with a lot of companies shutting down their doors with covid fears. Thank you VCA Staff!

Brought my kitty in because my home clinic was closed and I was I was scared about him possibly reacting to the injection he had gotten / and his URI becoming pneumonia do to struggled breathing, coughing etc. The Vet techs / staff at front were awesome! However, the VDM I spoke to made for a bad experience. He rushed through our quick 3 min conversation telling me my cat had a fever, low oxygen levels and was dehydrated. He then proceeded to say that if I was looking for another antibiotic then he could give it to me but he doubted that it would help, but I could try...and that he should stay overnight and be hospitalized and that would cost thousands of dollars...I wasn’t provided an answer with what he thought was happening, I never got an answer on if he suspected pneumonia, I wasn’t given any steps to take or what to look out for. He left me a bit distraught about the situation and I left with no better answer than I had before. The good things he provided was Subcutaneous fluids and lysine chews, which I was happy about and thankful for. However, the way he spoke to me made me even more stressed because no attempt at an explanation or steps to take were given. I understand the emergency is busy but this was unacceptable. I then brought my cat to C.A.R.E Centre the next day and had a completely positive visit. The VDM was articulate, knowledgeable and understanding of the situation. She reassured me telling me with all the positives she saw in my cat and that in fact his oxygen levels were good and she was not worried about it at all. She provided explanations, observations of my cat from head to toe, and steps to take next. Although my cat is still sick I feel confident after visiting this location in what steps to take next and what to worry about if things progress. Thanks Dr. Lang! Long story short, if you’re able to, take your pet to C.A.R.E instead.

We have been bringing our cats to this location for 48 years. Love Dr. Weger he is the best cat vet He loves cats and does take special care with your cat. However our cats were in the office for 3 hours, while we waited in the car. This.is way too long for getting regular yearly shots which is max 1 hour appointment. Really bad time management' and very poor communication to us about what was going on. We called after 3 hours to see if cats were done and ready to pick up. Front desk said they were and they would call us in 5. After another 15 minutes we called again and they had to put us on hold to see if they were ready. The last two times we took out cats, it was similar but this was rediculous. They are a great emergency hospital. The best in Calgary, the only place I would take my cat if an emergency. But now I wondering about finding another vet just for yearly shots.

Nicole Frechette

Very kind and caring staff that care about u AND ur pet(s). Always comfortable.

KT Bear

The staff here is always nice

K Alder

Thankyou for your help with masu. Won't go into details but I'm grateful for the service I received. It was a honorable veterinarian clinic to visit. I feel they went above and beyond to inform me and offer the opportunies available.

Jackie Jorgensen

I recently needed to check some history for one of my pets, and Calgary North Animal Hospital still had the records I needed from 11 years ago. I was surprised by how quickly they were able to access that information, and extremely grateful!

Allison Vollmerhaus

Our vet was excellent. She asked pertinent questions about our dog and cat. Our pets enjoyed her kindness as well.

Debbie Dekker

We had to have our 13 years old Maddie put to sleep on Jan 20,2020. Dr. Palmer and all the staff of Calgary North Vet clinic are so helpful and have so much empathy and compassion for what we to go thru for the loss of our beloved Maddie. Today, Jan 28 we received a card from them in sharing in our loss. You are the best

Charlotteruthbryant Bryant

Great, friendly staff. Explained options and what was needed and took care of us and our wonderful dog in an emergency situation.

David Hodgkins

Great people excellent service but the price of the vet is getting ridiculous not just here but at all vet's.

Peter Godue

Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Highly recommended.

Kristina Jurak

I have been bringing my pets to this clinic since 2003, but I feel, even before COVID, that the quality of service had been going downhill. There always seems to be a lot of disorganization. There should be a separate waiting room for people with small pets so they don't get stressed out by dogs, the PA and other loud noises. I lost two of my pets in 2020 and did not receiver a sympathy card for either. It's hard to feel like a valued patron :\

Brendan Lewis

Dedicated staff, very knowledgeable and caring. Love this place!

Matthew Batten

Dog attempted to eat a porcupine... They saw her quickly and pulled over 50 quills from her throat, face and nostrils. Very pleased with how quickly her suffering was relieved.

Krysten

The staff are amazing! So professional and compassionate. I had to put my little dog down just a week after I lost my other little dog. The compassion and care they showed me was amazing! And the Vet took so much time to go over everything with me and also made the process as comfortable and painless as possible. It is probably not an easy job they have dealing with these situations because I am sure seeing it so often is hard. But they are all so very sweet and I thank them all so much for the compassion and support they showed me. I appreciate them so much and so thankful to have had them through such difficulty and sadness.

Linda Isenor

They have been a huge part of our family’s pet care for about fifty years and we wouldn’t dream of going anywhere else.

Kris Belenky

Our poor cat burned his feet on the stove so we called this vet since it's the only one open. The first lady was nice and said to bring him in as a walk in. So we got him ready and in the car. Which he hates, he gets stressed and scared and he drools/pants in the car. So we get there and we call again to say we're here and the second lady said that it's a 3 or 4 hour wait. We calmly told her what the first lady told us and she was basically like 'oh well it's a wait'. I am not going to torture my poor cat by sitting in the parking lot in his own drool as he's screaming and his paws are hurting. It would have been real nice to know the wait time when we called so we didn't have to stress out our cat so bad. Also some of your receptionists need to drop an attitude. We're trying to take care of our cat and we could literally hear the eye roll from the second lady. Unimpressed and I'm livid as now we have to wait to take him to the vet we usually go to tomorrow. Which unfortunately can do more harm than good and we don't have a choice.

Kathy Hunter

Fast and friendly service. Staff very polite and they saw us right away. Water bowls for the dogs and even water bottles for the hot owners.

Ryan Mitchel

Always amazing...always busy! Won awards every single year for 10 years running, trust this clinic.

John Swalm

Extremelly high vet prices, used to be my regular vet but could not afford their fees, went elsewhere to a vet that is great but about 1/3 less expensive.

Jeremy Bzdega

After waiting 2 hours to see a vet, a staff members announced to the half dozen people waiting with their pets that they had a shortage of doctors and equipment that wasn't working. They announced that everyone had to leave the vet clinic. Heck of a way to run a business no doctors, broken equipment. Very unprofessional. Recommend you stay away until they have enough staff to operate their business

Lori Friesen

Let's just say that I have a cat but I know nothing about them like what they eat and where they poo and stuff, but these people took their time to show me everything around and show me what I need and what I do not need. There was a lady over there that helped me but I forgot her name she is one of the most patient human being I know. Overall my experience over there was top notch my Shassy couldn't feel more like a queen after everything we got over there. And she's loving her food.

Martha H

We were visiting from BC and my pup became ill with a respiratory infection. All the staff - the woman who answered my call, the nurses and the doctor were very kind and thorough. If we lived in Calgary this would be my choice of vet clinics. Highly recommend.

Brent Beatty

Caring staff fast service excellent care

Rob Burnett

We had to take our rabbit in and the staff made it very easy even with lockdown happening. They took great care of our rabbit.

Fabian Palacios

We took our bunny here for a bout of GI Stasis and the staff were very helpful. This location seems to have a bit more knowledge on small animals than some of the other ones, which is a bit more helpful in emergencies.

Marcus Weidler

I just went here recently and was forced to surrender my beloved cat because they don't do payment plans here. And with covid going on who has thousands of dollars laying around when people are being put out of work and business and companies are shutting down. We were going to pay we just didn’t have the full amount and now my family is suffering from heart ache because of these people. I hope your happy for taking an a extremely loved and cherished cat out of a great home to play her into a shelter where if she’s not adopted then she will be sentenced to death.

Claudette Giddings

Extremely caring and compassionate. Our senior cat had an emergency and they did everything they could for him. The vet has an amazing bedside manner and took the time to explain everything. Very impressed with how everyone we dealt with handled our difficult situation.

Tim Anson

Waited 4hrs so far, ridiculous. Do not recommend

One of the saddest day of my life. Most treasured and loved companion fell ill so suddenly. Took Rikki our 17 year old kitty to this hospital. The staff were so friendly and kind. I knew that he wasn't going to make it and Dr. Mitchell was very good and compassionate. His love for caring for animals was evident. At first I panicked and went home with Rikki. I didn't want to loose him. I went back the next morning knowing I had to say good bye but also feeling comfort in taking him back there. I have no regrets leaving my precious Rikki with Dr. Mitchell. I was able to pick up his urn of ashes in a week which helped having him close. I received a sympathy card from hospital with all the staff writing something beautiful and little cards with his paw print. It was so nice to receive and will keep with his stuff. I appreciate it so much and thank you to you all. Now if I could just get through a day without tears. I miss him so much. If your treasured little pet needs a hospital I highly recommend. Thank you again. Michelle

Shout out to Kayla. We thought our dog was badly injured by our other dog. (Looked worse than it was, dog is ok) and my wife was a total mess. We pulled up and she ran out to our vehicle after talking to my wife on the phone who was going nuts. Actually... shout out for being able to understand my wife. Took the dog and calmed down my wife. Such professionalism. Thank you Kayla!

David Susinski

Dr Matheson is fantastic

Serena & Will

They were amazing and took great care of our doggo during a difficult day. We had a horrible experience with the south location, but this one restored our faith in emerg clinics!

Chris

Dr Barton was fantastic to deal with - professional, knowledgeable, friendly demeanor and a great attitude given how busy it was and mentally challenging it must be on a case by case bases and still manage to try and have a smile on your face for the next client is admiral. And for all the support stuff that I met from the front desk to the individuals in the back Mela and Maverick appreciate your kindness and gentle nature! Thank you all!

Jade Pert

Don’t ever seek help from these scammers. I brought my 3.5 y/o cat, Kylo in there two days ago after I had a scare with her dropping tons of weight and not drinking water due to getting sick after eating a mouse. All they did was come up with ridiculous theories (i.e. cancer, a neurological degenerative disease, trauma to the head, or liver failure) while ignoring what I was telling them, and then tried to charge me over $2,000 after telling me she had a seizure in the back area — despite me telling them her lack of balance and dizziness was causing her to panic when on her side. Thankfully, she did get an IV for those 4 hours I waited in the room, which I wanted for her, and that did help. Before signing the release form I was told that she was going to die in the night without their help, but I signed it anyways, and surprise surprise, she was meowing again by the time they brought her off the IV (duh). That night I started feeding her shots of water and kitten milk from safeway with an oral syringe - which I should have just done at the first sign of trouble - but now she’s almost right back to her old self. So, yeah, that was my horrible experience, and I will be telling everyone to avoid your establishment and go to other more respectable hospitals. P.s. I know what hepatic encephalopathy means, and you trying to correct my speech when I can interpret the blood test as well as you can doesn’t make you sound smart, especially when your conclusions are wrong.

If you read reviews, you will find numerous mentions of what I am about to describe. We were put on the spot and forced to choose between multiple thousands of dollars in vet bills or euthanasia. Once having decided, we requested to bring out cat home on pain killers so that our children could say goodbye. We explained our intent to have our cat euthanized the following day by our local vet. This was at midnight. We were then threatened with having the humane society and peace officers sent to our home. We were repeatedly insulted and labeled as abusive. We were told that pain killers would be ineffective and that we clearly didn’t understand the implications of our actions. Feeling that our choices were limited, we elected to have our dear cat euthanized immediately. Our children said goodbye via a brief FaceTime call and the traumatic results are resonating throughout our home. Having gone through the process at this clinic, we were also privy to the numerous sales pitches for additional services they offer as you sit there grieving the loss of your companion. I feel that the tactics this clinic uses to hold clients hostage and wrangle out further fees is reprehensible. I have never been so disgusted with a ‘professional’ organization.

Kim Ost

I bought the VCA care club for my poodle. Awesome people work here. Thank you Dr. Weger!

Went there couple of days ago with my 3 year old dog. Had no choice to go there as my vet was not open. My dog lost his sense of feeling and movement to his back legs. Waited almost 2 1/2 hours in the parking lot before he was called in, only to find out that they did not do a full exam nor did they give me the option of doing an x-ray to find out what had happened to his legs. They basically told me I would have to pay thousands of dollars to find out what is wrong with my dog or put him down. How can you have a heart in saying these things and not try to find possible alternatives to help a family pet. My eldest was balling her eyes out when she heard this from the doctor. Took my pup into my vet the next business day to have a second opinion. They asked if I wanted to do x-rays see what was wrong with him and only to confirm that he has a disk disease and to bulging disc in his back. Glad I got a second opinion and not put him down like they suggested was my option. Don't trust your pets with them. Take them to your vet if they can wait.

Colter Jones

They are doing the best they can with covid, my wife and I trust them with our pets

Mike Vandenboer

Everyone has different experiences but my first time there it had a really nice vibe, so many animals it was so nice to see. I love the staff for showing lots of concerns and care for my hamster and yes they do take hamsters but I would recommend calling them first because if we didn't call Friday and came in we would've wasted our time because they told us the doctor wasn't in that day and to come in the next day. Overall they are so nice and gentle to my hamster and to talk to, I even love the fact that so many of the staff remembered my hamsters name, its just the little things. I've never written a review before but all the medications they gave me for my hamster works great, she's already a little active and moving around after her wet tail incident and yes the medications were high price but honestly if you do have a pet and can't afford over $100+ or $200+ medication do not complain to them but instead just do not get a pet because if they do get sick and they need medication to get better it is and will be pricey. Also would recommend reading the sign in the wait room because they have 3 groups, my hamster was in the third I think because she did not need urgent care unlike if your pet is having a stroke or seizure then they immediately take care of that first which I respect. And since we were in 3 it took a while but we didn't mind since there could have been a pet in need of serious attention because a lot of the staff was everywhere. Overall it was a great first time going there and thank you for being so gentle with my tiny hamster haha

I recently made my annual appointment for my dog. I called in advance of the appointment to mention some of my concerns to be addressed during the appointment. Since we are not allowed to go into the facility, I wanted the vet to check certain things of my concern. I was assured these were noted. Our appointment was for 1130 and my son arrived at 1125. He was made to wait almost 2hrs in the parking lot before being able to have our dog being brought in. I understand emergencies occur but 2 hours is not fair practice. Additionally, any concerns that I had, were not addressed by the vet or communicated to my son. I was very disappointed with this recent visit to Calgary North. I have been using this vet for over 10 years.

Tanya Schaber

Very well organized with Covid and our New Pup. Communication with Doctor was by phone but he pre called, called after exam with recommendations and talked through everything. Referred by a friend so am pleased to have found a great spot on my first visit.

Rich Black

Brought my dog in for 6 or so stiches need from a hunting incident. I asked the staff if they could stitch up a small gash and the answer was yes but 2 hr wait. I waited an hour and got called in. They took my dog and told me I could not be present. Waited anther hour and got concern a simple proceedure was talking so long so went in to see what was up. I got brought in a room just to be shown a picture of the lacerations for $112 dollars. And told they dont do surgery till after 10 pm and it was 8:00 at this time and that estimate for $700 for a couple simple stiches. As for as I concerned these guys are not interested in your pet well being just how much money they can make off you while they keep your pet hostage. Well played and I will never use another VCA clinic again.

Gryta Poon

24 hr open location and the staff is very friendly. The doctors explain every option regarding pets treatment with you and values your choice and opinion. Be sure to take an appointment if it’s not an emergency. Wait times are long especially with the lockdown.

Marlee Fitzpatrick

My senior pup was very sick, today she had seizures and it was her time to go. This vet clinic was kind, compassionate and took their time. They allowed us the time we needed to grieve and say goodbye.

Grade Sixes

I rescued a injured magpie today. They were the only people willing to help. Thank you for your help.

Michael Insole

my dog got into a box of donuts around 4am, and the staff here was really friendly and calmly explained what/how things were going to happen. price was certainly steeper than expected but i think its understandable given the service they provide, and how they saved my dogs life. he's resting at home now safely and happily thanks to them :)

chris chan

Everybody was amazing! They took great care of my cat, and explained all the tests and costs perfectly. No surprises at all; which was refreshing!

Brian Long

Liked the staff they were quick as it was busy but don't know how thorough they were cause I just have to go back the problem wasn't fixed

Ayesha Anwar

The staff are helpful, but you'll be on hold for a while for any booking or questions. The vets rotate, which can be frustrating as the recommendations can vary greatly based on who you get. Overall decent enough service.

Allyson Sales

Very friendly staff. Great care for animals.

Eric Stuppard

Wonderful staff that are always knowledgeable and caring. We see Dr. Burns who always take the time to go over options with you, and does a good job keeping anxious dogs comfortable. At times there can be a bit of a wait, but its worth it. (Thanks Dr. Burns!).
