*Graduate of the Sound Design program from the US.* It has taken me the most soul-crushing year and a half of my life to write this. I try not to live with regrets, but I can say without hesitation, that I regret the decision to attend this program. First, if you do not speak French, don't consider coming to Quebec and especially not to this program. You won't make it.
You will leave this program with no real experience or clue what you are doing. As a sound design student, you are not allowed to use the recording studio. Yes, you sit behind the instructor and watch. The facilities are run down and antiquated. My most rewarding experience here was when an instructor hired a cello player to play and record music we wrote...with his own money. With the amount of money this "school" charges, you would think this would be something they would cover.
Above all, the biggest failure to come from this place is its inability to support students post-graduation and in employment. I was the only student from my program to attend all of the career advisor's seminars. My grandmother gives better career advice. So, I made an appointment to discuss internships and making connections and I was handed a listings magazine and was told to cold call companies. I called and called, knocked on countless doors, was laughed at, yelled at, and talked down to. Not even considered to volunteer my time and learn or do an internship. Not one of my classmates is working in the field.
So if you feel like plunging your self-esteem down the toilet and settling into a major existential life-crisis, this is a good choice for you. Otherwise, save your money and consider other programs. Ask about their career placement/services. Explore connections any program has in the industry. Make practical decisions.
