Very nice isolation of art pieces, especially the Rembrandt collection. Only qualm is the curators choices for the first room that you are forced to walk through. I am aware there is some purpose to it, but it was lost on me.

I make of point of dropping in when I'm in town. The shows rotate fairly frequently. It seems like there's always something new to see. This is a good place to introduce children to art museums -- meaning that the collection isn't huge and doesn't take hours to see it, the admission charge is very reasonable (free for those18 years old and younger), and they often have family friendly events. They also offer classes for children, adults, families, and school groups. See their website for details. They just recently (Nov 2015) won an Exhibition of the Year award from the Ontario Association of Art Galleries (OAAG). The permanent collection contains Canadian historical art, Baroque Dutch art (incl. two previously unknown works by Rembrandt), and African art.

We've been going to the Agnes Etherington for our forty years. Our first contacts centered on renting paintings from its rental centre and then eventually purchasing them. Recent years have focused on attending new exhibition openings and the monthly Sunday music and talks. The Monkman exhibition opened last fall was spectacular and very memorable.

The Agnes Etherington Art Centre is located in the middle of Queen's campus right past the very impressive Theological Hall and Kingston Hall. The entrance to the centre had accessible accommodations and was well maintained (heavily salted!) for the slippery winter weather. Once we were inside, we were greeted warmly by the receptionist. Since we were first time visitors to the gallery, she walked us through a map and told us which exhibits were open or undergoing installations along with a short explanation of what each was all about. There is no admission fee but you can make a donation to the centre with no suggested amount. There is a small area for you to hang up your coats and belongings. There are also lockers with an electronic locking system available if you're here for a longer program. It was actually kind of hot in some of the gallery rooms so I'm glad I had somewhere to hang up my coat. The gallery is separated by exhibition rooms, some of which are curated by the students at Queen's. One such exhibit was the Quest for Colour: Five Centuries in Printmaking that had recently gone up. One of my favourites was the B-Side Agnes Etherington by Paul Litherland. It features a series of photographs of the backs of some of the paintings from the Agnes Etherington gallery itself. Overall I found that the wall labels for each of the pieces to be very helpful in knowing what to look for in a certain piece or to fully appreciate the artists work. The centre also is home to part of the original Agnes Etherington house. There are a few art pieces here as well as a grand piano that can be played by visitors on weekends from 1:00 - 4:50pm on a first-come, first-serve basis. All in all I spent about 50 minutes here taking my time to enjoy each piece. If you're on Queen's campus I'd highly recommend checking it out!

First off, you can go to this place for free. They have really good selection of art. Modern, contemporary, historic. Bader gallery where Rembrandt and company was displayed was our favorite. Covid protocols are being followed, masks and sanitizers are available for everyone. House of Agnes was beautifully decorated. You could easily spend hours here. The whole place was sparkling clean and well appointed. The staff were all friendly and courteous. Can't wait to bring my daughters here.

Agnes has some wonderful pieces of arts. The good thing is that it's free. In my humble opinion, it's a vital part of of queen's university campus.

Its collection of Rembrandts and northern European art is among the world's best, thanks to the generosity of Drs. Alfred and Isabel Bader.

Jordan Prentice

That is OK.

Celia Russell

A great art gallery to check out both work by famous artists and students at Queens.

Petula Thomas

Great mix of historical, modern, and contemporary art expertly curated. Small enough that you can see it all in an hour or so, but quality enough that you could spend several hours across all the works.

A smaller museum, but full quality and excellent curation. Children's programming is adaptive and well done. Beautiful facilities for special events.

Poor use of space I wish it has pieces and was bigger I find it odd the pieces they choose to put in the gallery to display often don't project what they are trying to say.

what a wonderful discovery! I've known about this place for years but had never visited until recently. The Rembrandt exhibit was quiet and marvelous. To be in an empty room with these masterpeices was food for my artistic soul!

Thepeoplesperson

Not a lot of art centres in town. Cool place to bring a date if they're into that kind of thing. Went to the Rembrandt exhibit recently. I don't know how do you review something like this? Well lit, non- obtrusive security, not busy not feeling rushed. Had a good time. Sliding scale to get in as they accept donations rather than charge a flat fee.

This visit was a pleasant surprise. It boasts a collection of 4 Rembrandt's but all but 1 were on tour. The highlight for our short visit was the quality and variety of Dutch Masters, contemporaries of Rembrandt, from the 17th C. It is an extraordinary selection. The staff were helpful and friendly. This collection may only be available until Spring 2022.

Amazing collection and a variety of themes for all. In the heart of Queen University. They have a few Rembrandt paintings. If you go to Kingston, Ontario, don’t miss it. Free entrance. The visit takes an average of 2 hours.

I attended Walter Scott's workshop at Agnes Etherington Art Centre On Sun. Jan 19. It was so much fun! Along with Walter's tremendous talent that he brings to the classroom, he is also able to impart upon his students the believe that they too can create a comic strip. The atmosphere in the classroom was fun, positive and respective of all levels of individual accomplishments. If Kingston is lucky enough to have Walter offer any more workshops I would highly recommend it.
