Beautiful campus. Amazing resources available to students in need. Huge library with a number of resources available for students. Great medical facility. Great recreation facility. Pro-green for a better environment, so that makes this institution admirable. This 2 star rating is just for that. I find the staff and admins EXTREMELY disrespectful and racially discriminating. There's an extreme difference in how they treat people from a different race. Parking is overpriced and limited parking passes available for such a huge campus. Food is also overpriced.

I did my undergraduate (2008-2012) and MASc (2013-2015) here. As this is Ontario's newest university it has new buildings and equipment. They are constantly building as the school needs space. The profs are generally pretty good and are very helpful if you are willing to put in the effort to succeed. UOIT (I will always think of it that way) has good ties to industry, at least in engineering. If you are looking for a place with school spirit or a night life though, this is not it. UOIT is definitely for the student that just wants to go to school and get a degree. The cafeterias are pretty bad, though that might have changed in the last 5 years. I know a lot of people complain about the laptops, I certainly did when I was paying for them, but it is really convenient having the engineering software at home rather than having to go to the engineering building labs to work on stuff.

Great school with a very friendly atmosphere on campus. Laptop program was an important tool in my studies. I studied criminology there and the professors are up to date with their knowledge and crafty in integrating laptop use to relevance in our field.

Poor administration makes finding and doing anything very difficult. Scheduling class means that a lab section can literally be during the same time as that classes only lecture. Limited choices of when you can take a class (many cases it only gives one option). Extremely expensive for such a small school located in a cheaper city. The teachers are good and the technology is state of the art which helps engineering students excel

Samer Aldahoudi

UOIT Is great in many ways. The best thing about it is that all students know each other so it connects them together which makes an enjoyable experience to all students.

Gaby De La Cruz

I'd love to give it a five star because my actual academic experience was phenomenal. But to be frank registar office lacks effective and efficient communication, via email. Simple questions like further financial assistance would not be answered or will be answered many weeks later (when registration for courses has passed). When you ask about remaining payments they just past on an invoice and that's it no further information on how to pay it off or assistance. Also no notice is given about payments before registration. This is quite concerning because undergrads have enough to worry about with passing grades , jobs, health and registration for correct classes. Asides from this professor's are phenomenal and so are the activities for student here. This school is more of community then an institution. Yet I hope that the registration office will find a system in which provide effective and efficient communication to students and potential students (this may deter students from wanting to attend this school).

I believe that this university really does have a lot to offer. I decided to go to UOIT not because the standards were lower at the time, but due to the amount of care the professors had shown to the students. This school really does have much to offer however the only thing I really didn't like was the split in the campuses. SSH was located in downtown as supposed to the many other faculties up North.

I am studying mechanical engineering and I love it, it is very easy to succeed at this school given all the resources and help the profs and the T.A provide. I love everything about this school, I love that it is small and easy to get around. It is a school for people that really just want to commute and go to school to JUST study. not many parties, but when studying engineering it isn't really a loss.

Nice university, tuff courses, challenging assignments, they push students to their limits by the end of each course, students really learn something new. I have enjoyed my time there. This university is a great example of how learning should be done, not a lot of things to do outside academic activities.

I am currently an international student studying at UOIT. I chose this university as it is one of the few universities that offer the Mechatronics Engineering program. Even though they are much smaller than other universities in size, they have quite a lot of facilities. They also have their very own wind tunnel. Needs improvement in teaching as some of the teachers are really bad. However, overall the university is really great.

It is very small, the staff are rather rude, and it seems that they are more interested in finding weak students rather than helping them. I took one year and then transferred to a different university, while it is just as hard, at least now I have people who actually want to help me, when I pay them.

Pretty much in the middle of nowhere. Felt like a giant highschool. It was a good transition university for me, I transferred to UofT in my second year of undergrad. Their biology program was very basic, did not offer any room for specialization. On the plus side, the facilities are super new, and the buildings are all close together so there isn't much travel time between classes. The mandatory laptop thing was super lame, though.

Great place. They're on their toes with Covid restrictions too which is a plus to know you have a place to study and still are relatively safe

This university is mediocre at best. Its overall description is as follows: Pros: - Quiet campus which is great for studying. - Relatively newer buildings and infrastructure. - Academic advisors from Engineering faculty are super nice and friendly. - Easiest university admission. Cons: - Extremely expensive because you're forced to rent crappy laptops - You're forced to take tutorials in filthy portables - Doesnt even feel like a university, but rather a giant high school. - They're tuition processing is slow and dont even allow for credit card payments. - The university still hasn't built much of any reputation or connection with employers. Overall it doesnt seem to live up to the standards of a decent educational institution.

The university is still young, which entails more need for expansion and growth as a school and campus community. Program wise, I can only speak for the Engineering program. Professors are generally pretty good. Course load can be difficult at times, but manageable. In terms of school community, it is simply not all there yet. Exciting events such as ski trips, bubble soccer, and various clubs are available. Additionally, productive functions such as co-op workshops, engineering society, networking events, and job fairs are present. However, many students commute which means after 5pm, the campus will be less lively and there isn't much environment where you can just go to hang out with friends between classes - a lounge type setting. The facilities such as the library or gym are generally good. However, especially during midterm or exam periods, there is a major lack in places to study. The university is expanding bit by bit in different aspects, such as: adding a new building for classes and registrar's office, and more residence building development.

This is not even a library, this is place where apparently everyone comes to just hang out and chat. What happened to a quiet and respectful place to get homework and studying done. The security that works here is an absolute joke and should kick students out for being loud and disrespectful just like any librarian would. I come here because I cant focus on homework at home and the library should be quiet but its not. The staff and admin do not do anything to change it and its beyond frustrating. Get better staff or security or implement better rules and regulations.

The campus is very nice with very modern designs and modern technologies. I had originally attended the school for the Game Development and Entrepreneurship program but later dropped out for my own reasons at the start of the third year. The laptops given as part of certain program vary on quality and performance depending on what program you're in. They're all Lenovo ThinkPad which is a very reliable and trusted brand overall. The Game Dev laptops are some of the best given out and was adequately used throughout the program.

Though I never had any in-person courses here during my time as an OTU undergraduate, I did come up to visit this campus location for their library (as a DC student because Durham College is lacking lol), events and activities that occurred here as it is the main building. A few of the professors and staff I have encountered here are all friendly and informative in helping guiding all their students here. There was an annual Lanwar-X for gamers, and workshops for first-years orientation that I recall going to. I remembered fondly of the tables set up at the huge field, that were introducing the various clubs and events for students to engage in. I recall attending the medicine pouch workshop, to make my own. That was a culturally eye-opening experience for me. There are many assistances, such as finances, career, and other advisors that are available here both in-person or virtually to assist. The building itself isn’t difficult to navigate either, as each section is categorized with a letter. Outside of classes and other commitments, their student association is great at managing events, and you can always check their social media (FB, Twitter, etc.) for future events! Hope you enjoyed this school to graduates, and may you have a joyful program to first-year students!

This University is what I would call a mediocre University. Pros: Mostly great professors. Small classrooms means you get face to face time with the Profs a lot. Beautiful campus, and lots of parking. Courre material is not too heavy, and not too light. Mostly all the lectures are available in PDF format online. Cons: Terribly small. No room to sit and study. You can look around for an hour and not find a place. Many exams and midterms scheduled on Saturdays and Sundays.

This has honestly been one of my worst experiences ever, with being in contact with a registrar office. They have been as helpful as a speck of dust, which is nothing. The transfer credits department has been 100 times more helpful with my questions and but this sour taste that the UOIT connect department as left behind remains. The website for choosing a course is horrid and their guides are full with just as many twist and turns. When I asked about their guide the only response they can bother to give me is to read guide OR they would not even other to ask them when I even showed them a screen shot of what I did not make sense. Would I honestly be sending you an email if I haven't read the guide and it made sense to me? I'm starting to regret even accepting this school offer.

Axel Soos

I've attended a few schools, including Dalhousie, University of King's College, and now Western. If you're interested in a really vibrant campus life (especially if you're into activities in the arts), I would suggest going away to another school; Ontario Tech just isn't quite set up to provide an ideal, social first year experience like other schools will offer. However, educationally, I have had an excellent time here. Versus larger schools (like Dalhousie), the experience is much more personal. For example, instead of being matched to a different advisor every time I need an appointment (and waiting two weeks), mine is always available and knows me and all of my individual concerns without having to constantly start from scratch. When it comes to the professors, I have felt that the vast majority are truly invested in my success. The program (accounting) is no easier than any other I have taken, but there has been support every step of the way from both student services and faculty. Ultimately, this approach makes sense; the school cannot simply coast by on a well established name, and it's therefore in their interest to see students build their reputation through actual career success! I don't regret coming here at all, and have had an experience that compares very favourably in many ways to the others schools I have attended. It depends on what you're looking for and what your priorities are. I honestly came here because it was close to home and the most financially sensible choice when I switched programs, but knowing what I do now after four years, I would happily make it again.

The newest university in Canada, the school is fresh, high tech, easy to commute to, and is open 24 hours a day. Great facilities!

I am studying mechanical engineering at this school and the applications through the use of technological software are fantastic! However this school has a very high dropout rate and is one of the most expensive institutions in the country. Great co-op and internship opportunities, while the school takes pride in employing incredibly intelligent professors. You are given chances to perform your own projects and collaborate with other students. Many people are not satisfied on the subject of the mandatory laptops. Personally, I find it very convenient to have all of my simulation, MATLAB and NX CAD software, Microsoft office etc. always with me. The course load is very challenging, they want you to excel and absorb the most amount of knowledge by the time you graduate so you are ready for the work place, or academia. I think what is key to note about this University over others, is to keep in mind that it is a STEM school. The term implying, Science - Technology - Engineering - Mathematics. The employment rate for graduated students is impressively high within 6 months after graduation, speaking in terms of the entire school. If you are interested in engineering, I recommend this exponentially growing University, that has ten folded in population since opening. The research being done here is inspiring, and students in their fourth year get to participate in CAPSTONE projects, work that is being supervised under a faculty member. This institution is under rated. Many schools don't take on 6 courses a semester, but here you do at least half your degree. The school is hardly over a decade in age and it has already accomplished so much. One improvement the University needs is an increase in overall school spirit. The campus isn't large and has pretty well two pubs. Not entirely feasible for an engineering student to attend those weekly pub nights with a demanding course load, but if you work hard enough you can participate and have fun. The school is located in North Oshawa, so it's important to understand that walking distances to many places is not the most ideal, and all the bars are downtown Oshawa..but you are here for an education right!

critical reviews

Had an unpleasant experience at my time in this university. During my second year in the Bcomm program, specifically during final exams, I was hospitalized for 3 days. I was very ill during the whole period of my second semester but still put in effort. I wasn't able to make it to some exams which were a few days before I was hospitalized and diagnosed with a chronic illness, and still am, I was practically fighting for my life at this time. After I recovered which was about 15 -20 days after exams, I went back to see the academic advisor. Her name started with a C from what I can remember and it wasn't Cyndi. I explained my situation, provided her with an admittance form from the emergency hospital. She took the form put it on the side and bluntly said that I passed the 10-day appeal period without any remorse or concern and said there was nothing I can do. Pretty shocking experience after being diagnosed with a chronic illness at the age of 19. I wasn't able to come back for a year. I was determined to finish and came back 2 years later and finally completed my Bachelor's of Commerce. Glad I have a degree but I can't believe I gave my money to this school without taking legal action. Was I really supposed to contact the school while I was in the emergency? Maybe if I wasn't a minority things would have been different. I will never recommend this school to anyone. Regardless of what life has in store for you, never give up, be humble, and succeed. Do not give your hard earned money to this school.

Admin at the school is a joke. Academic advising is a waste of time, trying to get in touch with academic advising individuals, transfer credit individuals or LOP administrative staff is next to impossible and once you do get in touch with said individuals, they have little to no common sense in relation to their job and are NOT knowledgeable about their department. I’ve been given the run around many times from all these departments, referring me to one another to answer questions. I will say there are some hidden gems that I have been able to get in touch with that can actually directly answer my questions, only one or two in my experience. Profs are good (depending who you get) campus is decent, the food situation is not great at the school but they do seem to be putting in some effort.

Note.. The name changed in 2019 to "Ontario Tech. University". The University of Ontario Institute of Technology is a relatively new university. The university was founded in 2002 and took first batch of students in 2003. The univerdityvhas two campuses... The msin campus in the northern part of Oshawa and it houses engineering, science, health and information technology programs. The other campus is atbthe downtown of Oshawa. It houses the programs of social sciences and teacher education. The university is becoming a defining part of the city of Oshawa. Although it is a new university, it is ranked among the top universities in Canada. It has strong research outputs. It houses the ACE Climatic Wind Tunnel, which is one of the biggest wind tunnels in the world.

I'm going into my 4th year of studies at UOIT for Automotive Engineering, following a successful 1 year internship at Siemens Canada. It's cool to see that UOIT has hosted Siemens Canada CEO Robert Hardt speak on campus on the subject of "The Future of Advanced Manufacturing." Two of my closest friends of mine here at UOIT have held internship positions at Honda Canada Manufacturing (Die Cast Department), and Canadian Tire (Maintenance Engineering). Others have went on to work at GM and General Dynamics to name a couple. I've also talked with students who have collaborated with Bombardier Aerospace and General Motors for their Capstone projects. Another friend of mine has done research work in the ACE wind tunnel for Mantis Racing as part of a Summer work placement. Despite what some people have suggested earlier in my experience I have met some brilliant students; a couple have even co-founded a 3D printing company. Having said this, for such a young University it is actually quite well known. I like that the campus is small and easy to get around. The software that is included on the laptop program is great, meaning you can work from your home with a license (NX, Carsim, Matlab...). Nothing on Teamcenter for the Engineering students to my knowledge, but there is a course in Durham College which deals with Teamcenter. Professor quality is reasonable, you have some that are more difficult to understand than others (especially in higher years) but generally everyone is willing to help you. The only thing I guess which bothered me was that there could be a tad bit more study space, sometimes during exams it is difficult to find a comfortable working area in the library. However, there are a few other spaces on campus, like the DC buildings and ACE.

I am an engineering student at UOIT. I chose to go to UOIT because of it's program and campus. It is a smaller university compared to many other big names in Canada and USA, but It's quality is none less than other reputed universities. The faculty members do a lot for students and make sure the university offers a great learning environment for students. I would definitely recommend UOIT to any student. It's full of quality without a famous name as it's a new university. There are many alumis from UOIT that are making their mark in the industry and I am confident that 10 years down the road they will be in admirable positions. There is always room for improvement in any institution, and UOIT is expanding their campus to accommodate more enrollment.

Best university by far, local feel. My class size was not huge, profs were very acssessible and provided good feedback. Learnt a lot here including good research and presentation skills. Very high tech campus, good library and very diverse student body. Proximity to Durham college is good (more facilities), but also bad in some ways. The only two negetives are: the campus, including the library, closes at midnight at the latest. School changed names since I graduated. I should be provided new gear for free.

Lovely university with a good sense of community. Definitely have enjoyed my time here in the political science program and will miss it when I graduate.

I would come for computer science if they didn’t do physics.

Tech is one of the best University in Ontario. The University is very talented and brand new professors. Awesome facilities and study material. overall great!

Low quality of electrical engineering education. Don't even teach soldering, let alone any practical design skills Bloated administrative system throughout the school Unheard of by anybody outside of Durham region. Zero credibility or recognition anywhere I do not recommend anybody to waste their time and money at this university. Go to any other school

Where do I begin with this school.... They call themselves the University of Ontario Institute of TECHNOLOGY but can't process payments via credit cards, and if you get help from OSAP you can't do monthly payments they want the money all at once but yet other colleges and universities offer that option, hell, even Durham College located right next door to them take credit card payments for tuition and just about anything else. The staff of the institution are extremely rude. The list goes on with that school. The one thing they actually have going for them is the profs outside of that I wouldn't bother with this school.

UOIT students without coop experience don't have the work experience that other Ontario students do. UOIT makes many efforts trying to tie its graduate research to industry. However this very difficult. Without graduate coop students to hire, industry must use other people to turn research into practical implementations. As result there is limited benefit to be gained by industry cooperation with UOIT. The very students most able to contribute and help turn research into practical implementations are not available to gain practical work experience.

I don't agree with that reply from "mrchi mrchi", This is a university, if you want to study soldering, you can directly go to college, any university is to teach in-depth knowledge. So far, most professors and students are very nice and helpful. I am very happy to study here.

Loved my experience at the university. I have nothing but positive memories. Really new campus and many quiet places to study.

All they want is money. The people at the registers office are so rude. 10/10 would NOT recommend. If you're looking at moving to this school. You shouldn't.

School has one of the highest drop out rates in all of Ontario for Engineering. I mean, what else to be expected when they let in students by the truck loads with 60-65% Grade 12 averages. Poor students are fooled into thinking that the same level of effort that got them 60's in high school will become engineers with the same amount of effort. What the school doesn't tell you is two fold: 1) In order to keep their accreditation, they have to maintain academic standards, so students who got 60's in grade 12 cannot possibly keep up with the academics. And students with 60's and 70's make up a bulk of the newly admitted students at UOIT. and 2) Even at 11 years old, the school is so new that engineering firms in and around the GTA, still ask "UO...what?" when hiring. Common theme among UOIT graduates, is having to tell people about what/who/where their school is. Do yourself a favour, work/study harder and go to an established school. Majority of my nephews friends who graduated UOIT with engineering degrees are working in non technical/menial labour jobs, while his sister who went to Queen's for engineering had 6 job offers even before she graduated. Ironically, he graduated with higher grades from UOIT than she did from Queen's. Now, I am not blowing smoke here, but basing this on my 23 years as a technical recruiter for some of the largest engineering firms in Canada. I have no affiliation with UOIT or Queen's or any other university.
