There is not a single positive thing I have to say about this school after 4 years of attending it. My money and time have been completely wasted. Professors in my department are biased and disrespectful, those I've taken classes with in other departments have often been incompetent. Most buildings on campus are old and not taken care of or cleaned. The new science building, which has been worked on loudly and disruptively DURING my classes, clearly hasn't been built well - the roof already leaks and the elevators are out of order half the time. I should have transferred to UB years ago.

Not a good place, at all. While the actual education is great (great professors, great classes) everything else sucks. A lot. This is because all the money goes to the education, at the expense of everything else. If you plan on dorming, you'll be dorming with "students" who are at an 8th grade educational and emotional level, who look forward to partying Friday and Saturday night and that's literally it. If you are looking to escape your dorm and go to some fun college events or clubs, that's too bad, this place doesn't have them. If you are literally just looking to get a good, normal, cheap education, and don't care about being stuck with boring, uninteresting people doing boring uninteresting things for 4 years, this might be the place for you. However, if you have any semblance of any creative dreams and ambitions, don't really enjoy college style partying (read: get wasted while listening to really bad music), and want to become something truly special, do NOT stay here for more than a year. I only came here to boost my grades to get into a better college, so I needed to come here. However, I did not enjoy my stay here at all, and cannot wait to move on to much bigger, brighter things in life.

I graduated with a BS in the Industrial Engineering program. I kept my head in the books first, then partied *after* I got done, EVERY DAY. I transferred in from a CC with a super low cum, transferred all my points and my cumulative avg started anew, thank God. Lived on campus, learned how to make friends and avoid trouble. I always tried to keep the good times in check. I got my GPA up to a 3.23 and got work in engineering in Dallas, TX. I read a lot of the reviews and feel bad for those who complain about this and that-- if you work and study and put the phone down, you're going to understand what's behind the degree they give you, and THATS why you get a job. Don't be blaming the administration or the post-grad support people.

Graduated in 1976. I turned out alright. Disturbing to see such nasty reviews on this. The school maybe a joke now because the whole country is now. The laughing stock of the world! It's up to you to make it better.

Too Many Gangs, Its like a prison. The police don't Even Care I just Graduated from Buffalo State College, and it was the worst experience of my life . I was threatened continuously by rival gangs in the area, there were drug dealers on campus. It was almost like the security didn't even care about the students. I was also bullied and taunted, I was in 2 fights and one of them I went to jail for (It was self defense). The kid just knew I would react so he just hit me first. This school is also very racial (I'm white)(Most of the students are black). The school itself is in a hood or Ghetto, so there is always criminals on campus, All the students care about is partying and doing drugs. I was surprised, I survived all 4 years. DO NOT COME TO THIS SCHOOL, Especially if you want a college degree (Cause the faculty is horrible and the professors are dumb dumbs) If you do come here, don't dorm, or else the environment will change you (Negatively, and Violently)

If you are from New York City, don't come to this college. This college had been recruiting students from New York City for past ten years because of money problem, if you decide to live in campus, you will be FORCED to charge a meal plan you don't want to. I personally PAID 11,345 PER SEMESTER ( didn't count financial aid). And every time there is break or holiday, the entire campus would be shut down, which means you have to leave the campus and live somewhere else(most of you would choose to return New York City, but the Greyhound bus cost a lot money). Again, if you are from New York City, don't come, this college is not worth of your money,

I tried to call and get a transcript. It was impossible- you can't get a live person, you get hung up on if you try. All you get for your transcript request is a recording that goes too fast to write it all down, and when you try and put in the web address provided, you get a "coding error". Same thing with the links on their website. If their access is this bad, how good can the college be!

I was pursuing a bachelors degree there for Graphics Design, and through the course of my studies must say this school is perhaps the most disorganized. They have little to no contact/ communication with other departments. Transferring from another college with a 3.98 GPA and an associates degree felt like it afforded me little to no time off the whole bachelors degree. The financial aid department is a joke, literally they will tell you they are not your financial "babysitters" when asking for assistance and clarification on your aid. If you request a review of work being done and you feel was unfairly graded by a professor there are no means to seek, no one to talk to. All in all, don't waste your time. Definitely not a cheap school to attend, as they have hidden fees that cannot be circumvented, even if you don't use the particular activities they charge you for (unlike other schools like UB where they will drop any unnecessary activity fee if not being used). Two weeks to my starting my second from the last semester (after I contacted the financial aid office) notified I need to get a private loan otherwise I owe and be able to finish my last semester, two weeks prior to starting mind you. This college cares nothing about it's students. My experience taught me this.

This school is great. I go here for the combined program of Early Childhood and Childhood Education. The professors in the Education program are passionate with what they do and are always willing to help you out. I know my professors on a one on one basis and even had the pleasure of going to a professor's house to eat dinner with her, other education professors, and fellow students in the Dean's Honors Program. I am in the Elementary Education Club and it is a great resume builder and a GREAT way to to get in touch with the education professors and seniors. They have given me so much advice and helped me out greatly in picking out classes. Every now and then they bring dogs into the Student Union to help with stress. My grades are awesome. If I am struggling, the professors are more than willing to help with office hours. Greek life is huge here. I am planning on joining a sorority once I get a GPA (I am a first semester freshman currently and it is is an honors sorority). There is no hazing with the Greek organization I am trying to get in to. I am also planning on joining the elementary education honor society as well! I love it here! DO NOT believe what people tell you about Buff State. The only people that say negative things about it are the ones that HAVE NOT attended this school and do not know what they are talking about. I am paying way less for my degree than my friends that chose to go the private route. Same degree but I am walking away with no debt. They didn't want to go to Buff State because of what they heard. I did not believe it and wanted to try it for myself. Best decision. Don't pay $20,000 a year for the same degree when you can go to Buff State and have an amazing 4 years.

Andy Hernandez

The staff here aren't very informative. Anytime you need something they'll just send you round and round in circles wasting your time and money. The majority of the counselors treat you like an idiot. I wasted two semesters here just waiting to get out. Plus the campus is far from stores and barber shops. The closest things here are the Tops and the Family Dollar. Don't recommend it if you like to save your money and time.

Clint Bastien

Enjoyed my time here affordable school keep your head in the books.

Good school. Diverse surounding area. Not the greatest academic reputation. Not very expensive to attend. Bottom line; it is what you put in and make it out to be- like everywhere else!

Christopher Boehm

Look, as far as the education goes, it's fine. Their English department was wonderful, and you can't beat their education department. Otherwise, it's a state school where the significant majority of students are commuters. So, if you're living in the dorms don't expect to receive focus (or a parking space) over the commuters. Don't know if it's still the same, but the admissions, student finance, and all of the administrative functions of the school were a mess. Expect to spend ridiculous amounts of time to perform even the most basic of functions and to be treated like an insignificant cog in a giant machine. Having said that, it's college. And at the end, you get a piece of paper that's just as good as one from any other state school, only cheaper.

You will be surprised at how many people you will meet when you are travelling around the country who have gone to this school. Lots of people have gone here. This school seems to have a fun but focused feel to it. I really do think it has a notable party scene. You can expect to see students prowling around the Elmwood area late into the night. They seem to be having fun.

Terrible food is not good, the campus is very mundane no events, they accept more students than they can hold. Had to live off campus for a year. Left and never looked back please reevaluate your decision please!

I would not suggest that anyone goes here. The administration is a joke. They enroll more students than the college can handle. They give the students everything that they need because they love to help the underdog and under-privileged. I know of a student that graduated but couldn't do simple math or comprehend what he was reading. I do not think that admission is based on an SAT score. The students are even a bigger joke. they are not held responsible for their actions and they know it. Property and buildings are destroyed not because of lack of maintenance but because staff is busy fixing everything that has been destroyed by the students. They are disgusting and do not care what they do to the campus, the dorms, the bathrooms and the property. If the students didn't make this a S**thole, it is a great location in a great city with a lot to offer culturally.

This is a really wonderful University. The education is high quality for a low price. The teachers all have varied personal and professional life histories, and want students to succeed. The academic student body is one of the most diverse in Buffalo and actually represents the population of Buffalo. The school offers free admission to the Burchfield Penny and discounted admission to the Albright Knox, the two largest art museums in the area. And with your student fee, the school purchases a transit pass to encourage public transportation. There are gym facilities, a pool, a track, gym courts and an ice rink which is free for students to use. The art program is the most diverse in the SUNY system and is very highly rated. There are opportunities for woodshop, jewelry design, sculpture, ceramics, fibers, drawing, painting and independent exploration. I'm an Economics major and the teachers have all been excellent. Many of my teachers are professional CFAs and CPAs and are networking opportunities themselves. The Art department's student organization offers free figure drawing in Upton hall which is open to the public. The campus is also extremely safe and not only have I never had a problem, but don't know anyone who has. There are so many advantages to this college over others in the area. Please do not turn the college down based on the bad google reviews, they have to be outliers. Go to the school and ask around. Visit for the day outside of a tour and sit in the Union or go to figure drawing and meet current students. Drop by a building and sit in on a class, after politely asking the teacher. Or just look through the library's selection of books. These are ways to tell if you would really like a school, definitely not based on the opinions of another person including myself.

Overall positive experience at Buffalo State College. Yes there are neighborhoods that had been left to decay nearby but they are actually being renovated and cleaned up recently. Also, nobody mentioned that on the other side of the school is a beautiful art museum and the largest green space in the city.

I graduated in 1997. I was originally supposed to go to school out of state but ended up here. I really enjoyed my time at Buff State. I've met and remained friends with numerous people from around the state, and both my academic and personal experiences have prepared me for the path I've chosen. I've only gone back a couple of times but I noticed the changes and they're great. Looking forward to the future. Thanks BSC!

This is thankfully my daughter's last year. Apparently we picked the wrong college. She complains all the time how her professors never respond to her inquires, can't be found and just don't care. I get it, they consider them adults at 18 but lets be real, they are still children who need a little guidance. She almost failed a class because English was not the professors first language and couldn't understand him. When asked to repeat himself, he'd get upset. The school is building more classrooms instead of dorms, knowing dam well most of the kids are from outside of the 35 miles needed to have on-campus housing. Her first year she had to share her room with 2 roommates instead of 1 which caused much ciaos. the next 2 years she was wait listed and stressed because she didn't know if she had a place to stay and this year we signed up for Campus Walk because she was told there was limited room for senior housing this year!! HOW?? Now I'm stuck with a lease for 12 mths even though she will be in school for 10 with no intention of staying in Buffalo. I feel Campus Walk took advantage, knowing they don't get their refunds until October. I was told they would work with the students and wait for the refunds but that didn't happen. They are charging them rent for August and not allowing them to move in till Aug 23. The construction isn't finished yet. They charge a $35 late fee and $5 everyday after. I'm sorry but they know these kids don't read so they tell them what they want to hear, not realizing they are stuck. They have students answering the phones and giving out incorrect information. I could go on and on. I was hoping for more diversity on campus but it's not what I expected. We come from the city and most of the kids are from the city. Had I know all this, we would not be here.

I had a terrible experience. The school is not in a great area a decent chunk of the violence and bad things you here about in buffalo are in the surrounding area of buff state. There is a big drug culture so be forewarned. In addition there are a lot of kids from the buffalo area and from new york city who barely got through high school and attend buff state due to the EOP program due to this some class I felt were dumbed down. I am not saying it is a bad school don't go there because I had a bad time, but why I am posting is to voice my concerns and make others aware before they make their decision if this is the school for them.

Buffalo state is in the middle of the ghetto, there was about 5 on campus robbery! A female was sexually harassed the first week of school here. The students are VERY rude and IMMATURE the dorms are DISGUSTING as well as the bathrooms! The students are bullies and there is no sense of security at this school. UPD doesn't do anything to ensure the safety of the students as well as Res life. Just spend the extra money and go to UB, Buff state is a HORRIBLE school and is NOT worth paying for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Granted, I was enrolled in the online graduate program so I cannot comment on the location, facilities, or undergraduate offerings. please, don't do this to yourself, there are good teachers, but the god awful admissions, registrations office, networking, and high probability of getting mugged, stabbed and or sexually assaulted greatly outweigh that. the dorms were made the same year as my parents and are in much worse condition, if you like comfort, on campus housing is not for you. Buffalo State is a joke that isn't even funny. It is located in the middle of the ghetto, there have been several students mugged on campus. The campus is very ugly and looks like a prison, contains no grass, just concrete and snow, it also happens to be directly across from an abandoned pych ward. Student population is awful, mostly kids who barely have a command of the English language which results in classes being dumbed down. Also a large returning student population so yes there will be plenty of single moms who bring their babies to class! There was a student in the 1ST WEEK of classes who threw a tantrum and slammed the door and went into the hall kicking garbage cans over, there was also a huge brawl involving DOZENS of students in the dorms that week... i did not see anything like this in over 2 years at UB. There are a lot of friendly and knowledgeable professors but the the programs lack structure and clarity--you can take the same class with a different professor and it will be a COMPLETELY different class. One professor refused to learn how to use a computer... another one literally had 14 cancelled classes in one semester! Many professors are not PhD's but just random Buff State/UB grads who stuck around so long they got a job. Requirements for programs are often vague and change depending on who you talk to. Almost EVERYONE at buff state has to end up staying longer due to some "hidden requirement". For those living on campus, the school has serious overcrowding so they have several 2 person rooms with 3 people living in them..not at a discounted price! If you are just looking for an easy degree, or want an inflated GPA to go on to a professional school then Buff state may be for you, but if you want to actually be educated and have a quality college experience--then I would imagine this is the worst SUNY one could attend considering the educational quality and the fact that living near campus is risking your life. Just spend the extra coin and go to UB or start out at a community college.

Buffalo State is honestly what you make of it. Every school has their flaws and room for improvement. I enjoyed my four years at Buffalo State, learned a lot, met friends that will last a life time and been apart of different student orgs on campus. Yes you have some professors that want to just collect their check and leave (thats at any school), but you have many others that you will encounter always ready to help you when you need help and want to build a relationship with you outside the classroom.

Will be attending here in the Fall of 2020, as a transfer student. Sent my application and documents in August to get an early start on everything. Decided to check the status of my application since they have a rolling admission and saw that they didn’t receive documents that I have already sent months ago. I called a hour before their office closed and spoke to a woman named Tracy in the admissions office, who was phenomenal. She took 45 minutes of the end of her day and found where all the problems had occurred, and fixed them! She transferred everything in the appropriate places and went out her way to figure it out. Hands down best service I have gotten from a school official. She told me step by step what to do next over the next couple months. Can’t wait to be apart of this school. Thanks again Tracy!

Buff State is a terrible school! Do yourself a favor and go to UB. A lot of the professors are a-holes who like to lie about historical facts. The Master's in Math program is a scam! I got accepted to get a tuition waiver and stipend money but mid way through the semester the professor running the program drew up stipulations for me to receive the tuition waiver. It said among other things I would have to maintain a B average or I'd have to pay back all tuition and stipend money plus interest. Stay away from the Applied Math Master's program, it's not as great as it seems. Stay away from this joke of a higher education institution!

Awful school… immature peers, if you are a person who is motivated and determined to succeed.. this isn’t the place for you. My experience was awful! I was picked on, got bullied on and when I reported it nothing was done. It was so bad that a woman who was by the name of Ms. Marshall did nothing to reprimand the students who were bullying me. Instead the lady waited for me to leave the school to turn back and put a stay away order in my file and made it seem like she was doing her job before I left the school but blamed me for everything. Horrible experience…. I would never ever come here again ..The public safety is also uneducated, instead of understanding the facts. Their first impression that you and your roommates and their friends is fighting over a guy…. Horrible place Met the worst people here..

I graduated from Buff State in 2005 and had a very positive experience here. Besides the infamous parking, which is the worst you can say about it, the classes for the most part were challenging but not impossible, a very good staff of professors (thanks again, after all these years, Dr. Ron Stewart) and a sociology degree that helped land me my career job within one year. Buffalo State has a lot of potential, but Buffalo is not a college CITY... Buffalo State is one of the most diverse colleges in the SUNY system. However, the school needs to be more progressive and inclusive. Why not implement more peer mentorship and leadership programs to enhance the campus culture and climate? Also, this school is not the most transfer friendly. A lot of the students were not open to making new friends, lacked substance, were very obnoxious, territorial, and/or judgemental (improve recruitment efforts). Few support services were in place for transfer students. Personally, living on campus was overrated and overpriced. The dorms were a microcosm of New York City. In other words, the majority of students were from downstate. Moving forward, a typical suite had three rooms and one bathroom... (6 girls+1 bathroom) = chaos. On the flip side, upperclassmen had the option of living in Moore Complex, which was nice and spacious. In regard to academics and student/career services, both areas need improvement. Students would benefit tremendously from practical instruction/examples and business writing as a writing intensive. Lastly, the importance of networking and professional development was not stressed upon enough on campus by the staff. >> Play a greater role in helping students find jobs after graduation. Most importantly, student life/res life needs to conduct more outreach and plan more on campus events such as battle of the classes or concerts. Students should be emailed once a week about sports events, as well as on-campus and off-campus events. Collaborate more with local colleges and universities, there are an abundance of schools in the area. Also have more discussions about mental health, sexual health, and sexual harassment in the dorms. In addition to hosting more events, feed the students at events! Moving on, lets talk about food. This is not your mother's home cooking :)... The food was mediocre at best. They need to switch things up a bit. For example, add themed weekends and special events to the menu. Bring a major chain restaurant such as Wendy's or Chick-fil-A and Starbucks to campus! Furthermore, the reception after graduation was subpar. They had fruit punch and a sugar cookie display for parents and students... A senior luncheon or a senior trip to Canada would have been nice--school traditions are always a plus and will entice students to give back more! Overall, there are lot of job and volunteer opportunities for students on campus. And, the school is in a decent location. I enjoyed walking down Elmwood Avenue and having access to public transportation to take me to and from the store or mall. ***Always VISIT the school before attending. Also, remember to always keep an open mind, be respectful, and develop yourself in college. P.S. I miss going to Wegmans, and the food in Buffalo was good. Lastly, be prepared for the winters in Buffalo. :)

Went in with prior college experience and thought it would be a good option for the price, I mean how bad could it be? This school is a joke. Most (not all) of the teachers are un-motivated and lazy. The past 12 classes I've taken here have been repeats of themselves. Even getting classes is a joke, I walked around for 4 hours and called about 20 people on the phone before I finally just went to the dean to give me my classes because not a single person on campus knew anything about registering. The staff is non-existent, clue-less and hate their lives. The library is a joke, they never have any books, which if they do they are all out of order or better yet lost on the 4 floors of library shelving, and you can't even use a computer because all the mouse's and keyboards are stolen. The dining hall sucks and food selection blows. Although they do have an ice cream and grilled cheese stand available at 8 am though, because that's what we all eat for breakfast right? They have people triple rooming in 2 person dorms, and they hold absolutely no events for anyone that goes here, even though you are charged a pretty high student activity fee. Actually I lied, they did hold a fried chicken give away that got out of control real fast one time which was pretty entertaining. There are no gatherings/parties or even students actively in general on the campus so good luck meeting people. Every other week it seems like someone is either getting stabbed or mugged. The place is over crowded with bike cops who constantly pull people over and write tickets for cars even though they have parking passes.(I know at least 5 people this has happened to personally) But hey there weren't 2 stabbings and 2 rape cases in the first month of school making it the most hostile campus in the country last year or anything...oh wait...parking tickets are more important than people dying. Overall you should steer clear of this place if you are considering it, even community colleges are years ahead of this embarrassment of an institution. It's really sad honestly, I wish it was better. Go to NCCC, ECC, Medaille, UB or better yet home-school instead. One good thing I can say about this place though was it is very culturally diverse. It's probably 10% white, 70% black and 20% Hispanic.
