I took my level 1 kayak course with Dave recently, and could not have had a better experience. The pacing of the course was perfect -- not too fast, but not so slow that I ever got bored -- and Dave was a very patient and encouraging instructor. I appreciated the focus on paddling skills and weather, in addition to rescues, and I feel a lot more confident in a kayak now. You can see how much Dave loves kayaking, and I will definitely be back for the level 2 course!

Took Sea Kayak Level 1 Course. What a great instructor! Dave from the very first contact was well organized, thorough and extremely patient. There was enough time to learn all the needed skills and plenty of practice and paddle time. If your nervous and have been putting this off, don't! it's very safe and I highly recommend West Beach Paddle.

Had a wonderful time! We went early April and Dave's experience was key to having a beautiful day. Dunking in the allouette river = frosty but better with the wetsuits provided. Learned a lot with great resources /Paddle Canada Cert. to carry me forward into my kayaking adventures. Happy Paddling!

We recently took our first kayaking lesson with David and it was everything we wanted it to be. He was a great instructor who is not only very knowledgeable but was very good at conveying the various techniques to the class. He provided good feedback and worked with us individually to ensure we got it right. Most importantly he provided a safe but fun environment for us to learn. We look forward to doing more classes soon. Highly recommended West Beach Paddle.

I completed my Paddle Canada Level 1 certification with David as the instructor. It was a great way to build confidence in my sea kayaking skills. David is very knowledgeable and he teaches in a way that is easy to understand. I appreciated that the atmosphere was relaxed, encouraging and un-intimidating. I would recommend this course to anyone looking to get certified.

I appreciated so many things about these lessons! I took the Level 1 kayaking course. Dave is very conscientious about the weather and how that may impact the quality of the lesson. He adjusted the location in both weekends I participated in courses. He also provided wet suits and a fresh dry one when I fell into the water within half an hour of the day (so appreciated as it was quite cold). He's patient and aware of subtle shifts we need to make to do the techniques appropriately and there is a good balance between learning and practicing the techniques. I found his instructions easy to follow and I definitely improved on my paddle skills.

While I was a bit nervous and pushing outside of my comfort zone, I felt that I had enough time and space to practice and ask enough questions to feel confident applying my new skills. My wife and I had taken an beginners course many years ago but wanted to refresh our skills as we had never kayaked in the intervening years. The course was great and we learned lots of new things. The class only had 3 people and the one on one instruction was great. The teaching takes into consideration the “social distancing” requirements of today. Great course, we’ll worth it!

If you're looking to learn to kayak, look no further, especially if you live in the South Surrey/White Rock area, or even if you don't you might want to consider here instead of False Creek as it's much less crowded. David is a great and patient instructor, and after one session I became hooked on kayaking.
