Gorgeous sights, lots of heritage to see. I love that the stables were kept original as well despite half of them being changed to fit a gift shop in. The gardens had to be my favorite part. Stunning to still see folks working on it and they always have some kind of goodie. My seven year old got to bring home Egyptian onions on our last visit to plant in his little garden at home. Lots of room to roam, and lots to see.
My wife and I had our first date here back in the early 90s. It was nice to see that nothing had changed.
Our Team Maxwell Management Group toured Dundurn Castle yesterday and was graciously greeted by Anna. The tour, antiques and stories were incredible. This is a "Must See" and they still have room for Christmas tours and events. Thank you all for your warm welcome and making our Christmas Holiday Celebration so special.
As the guides will tell you, this is not a castle but any large building in Hamilton get's residents excited. Beautiful grounds and home. Well worth the time and money spent for any history buff.
Love the original architecture and furnishings. Friendly, informative tour guides.
Wonderful history. Educational experience.
Good place to visit. museum is open
My niece and I wanted to do something fun and Dundurn was close and looked interesting. The house is super cool with a really nice guided tour. House is amazing and you really get to feel how this family lived in the 1800's. Parking was free and the tour was cheap. Tour was about 45 minutes long and she did a great job. Hard to pick a favorite part, as it was all beautiful, inside and out. I have since been back with some friends for a second tour, and they all have the same feedback...well worth it!
Very fun experience night tour, especially during the this pandemic. We even got baked goods at the end. Recommended!
We enjoyed this very much. The grounds are beautiful and the staff is great and very knowledgeable. The only thing keeping me from giving 5 stars is that the tours are too large, too many people to a group. Other than that a great time!!!
Very historic site with great Canadian content. Visit the graveyard that's across the street, with the remnants of the war of 1812. Never mind, look out into the bay, then imagine the fall of the U.S. Navy!
My mom loves this place! Reminds her of her rich childhood and how things used to be - "children to be seen and not heard".
Great tour and gorgeous place to visit. The servants quarters are super interesting as well. They accommodated with providing a wheelchair as well.
The history is fun but what I did not expect was the natural beauty. It's practically a woodland Paradise over there. There is a ravine and a lot of foliage.A lot of wide open space for kids to run and play. There is also a playground for kids on the grounds. The gardens are like a Royal Gardens of sorts. The castle itself was a little bit underwhelming for my daughter, but the grounds were beautiful and she really enjoyed it. The quaint little chapel is really nice too.
Nice place to bring the family
I've lived in the GTHA for over 10 years and hadn't visited Dundurn castle until very recently. It was a compelling look into Hamilton (and Canadian) history. The guides are very friendly, professional, and informative. They seem like they truly enjoy the place.
Can not believe I have never taken the tour before. What a wonderful afternoon. The young lady who did our tour was knowledgable and entertaining. Cannot wait to go back and see it decorated at Christmas.
Still a wonderful and peaceful place to go, when you need solitude, peace, and quiet along with a long history , a part of Hamilton, for a long time...well taken care if, and groomed.....a favourite place to bring visitors and friends
Interesting history book the one hour tour it's worth it
Dundurn castle is an amazing place for photographers and it is a beautiful piece of history everyone should enjoy at least once!!!
Spent a few hours exploring one of our old Hamilton haunts.
Enjoyed the stories and the tour of the castle. Beautiful place.
I love visiting castles as it gives a chance to see how people lived a Royal life back in the days. Went to Hamilton for a meeting and since I had half day free so I thought of taking a tour of the castle. I took a guided tour. It is worth paying the price as the guides are knowledgeable and will tell you a lot about the history of this place, the family that lived here and other cool unknown facts. I wouldn't reveal any of those facts here to maintain the charm of tour. I also tasted the onion soup that was made in the kitchen and it tasted amazing. Definitely a place to visit with family or if you have kids then they are going to love the tour. There is a shop as well where you can buy stuff such as books or souvenirs. If you happen to be in Hamilton, definitely go check out.
The tour was excellent and the tour guide answered every question.
Great place to visit while in town. Very informative guided tour.
Hamilton's mini Casa Loma, just 100 yrs older. Excellent historic place to visit, I just wished there were not tour-based only. Please expand the food tasting element into a full blown restaurant with authentic decor and menu, it will be a hit.
Enjoyed the tour of the castle. Some very interesting rooms and features.
Amazing history. Love the place. Will come back again.
Restored Historic Building. Tours offered daily and price is reasonable. Neat place to visit, easy walk on paths for the surround park land. Great view over the Hamilton Harbour and free parking.
Beautiful ❤️ Attractive ????
Fun to explore and a great place for black and white photos!
Great place to visit with kids and learn about history of Hamilton and people's living a century ago.
Fun place to go with kids. Preserved the 1800s feel with the tour of an actual kitchen with menu from that time. All staff were also dressed in clothes from that era. Make sure to take the tour.
Holy Molly this is quite the sight! Live entertaining performers in the main hall and a couple hours worth of touring makes this an amazing must see!!
Amazing tour!
Always beautiful grounds to walk through. Great part of Hamilton history.
Visited this place with grandma dearest who had a lovely time. Filled with history, and a lovely gift shop where you buy your tickets, this place offers guided tours. The grounds are well kept and the place borders a lake ( access if through a path)... plenty of parking too. Great place to visit on a cold day!
Only one theme (1812 war), so everything revolves around that topic but from different angles, presenting part of the history of Canada in a very amicable way. The building itself is very impressive and the gardens the same.
It was a very interesting tour, very informative on Canadian history and the daily life of Loyalist in Canada.
Christmas is a good time to visit Dundurn castle.
Fun and educational, especially in the summer. A valuable piece of local history containing 40 fully furnished rooms lit by gas lamps and adorned by nik naks and appliances of the era. Tours are on schedules. A few times daily. No public free roaming of the castle. But your free to roam the beautify grounds for pics... An on site store has plenty of gift choices and souvenirs...
Nice place to explore.history.of Hamilton and Canada...guided tours every.20 mins are informative. The.military museum.is good place if you.like to read history
Dundurn Castle is less of a castle and more of a large Palace or mansion right in the heart of downtown Hamilton. It's a very interesting place to visit if you're into local or Canadian history and it's possible to go on a guided and informative tour of the inside for a reasonable price. For those of you that don't want to explore the inside, the grounds themselves are quite beautiful and it's a great place to spend some time walking around while enjoying the lovely scenery. For an even more interesting walk I recommend exploring the castle grounds and then crossing the street and exploring the historic cemetery as well where you'll find some amazing crypts of famous Hamiltonians. There is free parking at the castle and it's very easily accessible from the Highway that runs through the city. There are some great parks and other hiking trails nearby and it's a great place to visit along with a few other of Hamilton’s more natural and historical attractions.
A gem in the city of Hamilton. Not really a castle, a stately home of a time gone by. There are so stunning spaces in the home. They have holiday events that attract many, and when they are cooking or baking in the kitchen downstairs the aroma is heavenly.
We love visiting historical sites here in Hamilton there are so many amazing spots Dundurn Castle is one of the most interesting of all you love the history you can literally smell it in the building I find myself constantly thinking about how many people have walked those staircases and the lives of the people who lived in those homes in the impact it's had and establishing this great City definitely must see for all tourists or transplanted hamiltonians
Amazing spot to take pictures and very interesting history
Gorgeous area, lots of history
Haven't been here in probably 30 years. Quite nice from what I remember
A beautiful place steeped in history that's only getting better with time. They are constantly trying to improve and refine the castle so one visit in a lifetime is not enough!
Very interesting. Great tour guide. Almost an hour tour in length. Price reasonable. Only complaint...tour group is too large. They take up to 18 people at once. Sections of the house too tight for such a crowd. Smaller tours should be arranged for your admission price and enjoyment.
Want to see what an almost 200 years old building. Built in 1830. Amazingly modern design.
Dundurn Castle is a great spot to visit. Just wish you could see a lot more of the castle. Seems very limited to what they'll show you. Absolutely worth the trip though
Received one of the best tours from the guide Alex. Alex was knowledgeable, patient, and accommodating, and his humor and thoroughness gave life to the history of this place. If you visit Hamilton, you gotta do yourself a favor and have a tour at Dundurn Castle!
A perfect way to spend an afternoon and time travel! The restoration team have done a fabulous job in recreating that Victorian high-class ambience. Highly recommended!
Awesome tour of the castle. The tour gide was great, engaging and well informed.
Took a guided tour with the family. The tour guide did a superb job giving details of the house and answered all our questions. The best part was it was free with a Hamilton Public Library card.
Didn't know about this place! Lovely setting and great history!
A very nice trip to the past , kids age 6 and above may enjoy the tour
Been coming here since I was very little. Not much has changed ????. Beautiful neoclassical/ renaissance Italianate architecture really captures the early 1800s. A beautiful historic landmark for Hamilton and Ontario. The grounds are lovely to walk around too. Just wished they would clear some bush looking out to the lake.
The castle is getting a little tired looking. I even noticed dust on some of the furniture. The lighting was quite dim however this is likely on purpose to show how the lighting would have been in that era. Our tour guide Anna was excellent and McNab family story is fascinating. We went on the evening tour and we had delicious Christmas treats in the kitchen and warm apple cider.
Green grass
The tour guide was knowledgeable & fun. Beautifully built and maintained building. Definitely recommend everyone to visit.
Want to learn how people in the 1850s lived? A great tour of the house and learnings of living back then.
Very creepy at night but worth stopping in!
Beautiful castle. The tours are guided. The guides are very knowledgeable. Definitely worth the time. Lots of parking.
Nice attraction for a quick afternoon trip. People are knowledgeable, and its interesting to see how a house was run at the turn of the century. Plan to spend a couple of hours. No earth shattering moments, just an informative walk through.
Awesome tour guide and we got a very thorough understanding of the people and daily functions of the McNab family back in the day and its historical significance. Would recommend others to come visit for sure!
Interesting and beautiful historic sight. Admission fee should be low.
Amazing tour. Was great to see that most of the mansion was kept intact or restored keeping the original looks. Super interesting and worth it.
good view, go to there at open day, u can visit for free
If you like history this place has it. If you are interested in paranormal this place has it. Inside or outside it is a beautiful historic place. Worth checking out.
More a manor house than a castle
I remember back in the day they had exotic birds. Neat place to take you back in time,I could live there.
Amazing place! It’s only $12 per person! There is no possibility to walk around the castle by yourself, so you have to go on excursion. Our excursion was extremely interesting! The guide was telling lots of interesting stories and it was interesting to listen to him, it wasn’t boring at all! The decoration of the caste is really cool. The castle is pretty big it is very well decorated and shows 1830th in a really great way. We are so happy to visit Dundurn Castle and we will definitely came back!
All dressed for Christmas!
This is the second time I was there. Tour guide keep talking to the same group of people and keep ignoring us. He needs to be more patient
My experience of Dundurn is different from others that have written reviews. I attended my friend’s wedding here. The ceremony was held behind the ‘castle’ under the canopy of the trees. It was a cloudy afternoon but still beautiful. I can only imagine that it would’ve been better if the sun was out and sunlight filtered through the trees. After the ceremony photos were taken on the grounds and a lunch was held in the pavilion by the parking lot. I’m not sure if the wedding coordinator works for the castle or not but she made sure the wedding party knew what order we were supposed to do what at the ceremony and reassured the bride she could contact her with any questions or concerns to make sure that her big day went without a hitch.
Great tours, friendly and helpful staff, 40 rooms to see, surprising and interesting historical facts. Overall, very positive experience for everyone. Definitely a place to see if you are in Hamilton.
A must vist.... another hidden treasure in Hamilton
Dundurn is one of my favorite places to walk. The grounds are large and it has wonderful views of the bay. I feel there should be a longhouse on the site as this was an area used by Indigenous peoples long before European settlement. The original fort wall should be restored to its former glory one day as well. The implementation of more gardens and trees would be a welcomed addition. The tours inside the "castle" are great. The guides are dressed in period pieces and the house hosts a lot of original local works of art.
Really friendly guide, dressed in period clothing
A nice little castle and nice to now about the history.
Absolutely beautiful!! My family loved visiting a piece of Canadian History.
Nice historical landmark, it seem like a castle though
We took part in the Victorian Christmas evening tour last and it was amazing. Our guide Helen was knowledgeable and funny and made the tour an unforgettable event.
A very excellent and well-kept historical location. They have a very interesting and descriptive tour that goes inside and shows you everything and tells you everything you need to know. Although it's not technically a "castle", it still is quite an amazing sight.
It always amazes me that slaves will celebrate their masters. McNab and company are all tyrants. Since the founding of Hamilton as a Police-Settlement the same proprietors have controlled all the wealth. Why do we celebrate the greedy psychopaths??
Great look back to the late 1800s. If you're a fan of Downton Abbey you'll enjoy the tour and feel right at home. The servents area looks right out of the TV show. The tour is a great deal at $10 for about 30-40 minutes, the tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly offering a lot of opportunities to stop, wander around ask questions. You can also wander the grounds/garden and military museum with the same pass. A quick and easy way to spend an afternoon with friends/family. You cant really go wrong.
Beautiful grounds and friendly staff.
Went through the castle this morning with a group. We had a great tour guide; she was sweet and knowledgable. I enjoyed her story telling as we moved through the space. I would definitely go back (kind of want to visit next Christmas to see it decorated for the season)!
The price is well worth it. Beautiful home. Tour guides were very informative! Easy to find. Street signs were marked well.
I really enjoyed the whole place they even have family rates and it comes with a second ticket for admit to the military museum. The one thing I would have liked was to spend more time inside the tour is the only way in and only lasts an hour so once it is done you are done. Visit the garden at the end of the season to really see everything.
Very interesting, knowledgeable guide
This tour can be really great, or really not so great, dont get me wrong the tour itself is great and the tour guides and other staff are great, the thing that can kill it is if you get a large group of others going with you, especially if they are particularly annoying patrons, the tour is long and interesting and worth the price of admission, unless you use a library card in which case its free, but just be wary to try and go during non busy hours, the less people with you the better as it's not as rushed and crowded ao you can appreciate the building and its history, as well as have more freedom to ask questions more easily. No bagels but they do usually offer a period appropriate snack in the kitchen area in the basement so that's fun
Beautiful architecture and great guided tour. Definitely worth the trip and price
Attended a birthday party with my family here and it was fantastic. The kids got to make cookies and have a tour of the house before going back to the clean and spacious private room for food and games. Excellent and knowledgeable staff, beautiful scenery, and the kids had a fantastic time.
Nice place to spend half a day...loved it
Such a great local gem. Luke at the front register was super friendly and welcoming. Our tour guide (other Luke) was also knowledgeable and patient - answering every guests questions (including some that were a bit naïve.) If you want to know the history of Hamilton, this is a MUST DO.
Very good place to visit eh
Went in for the christmas tour at Dundurn Castle, and the staff were amazing!! Great tour, there is seating available in about each room. And you get to take home cookies!!
Every time when I googled about top things to do & see in Hamilton, the Dundurn Castle pops up, but I just haven't got a chance to check it out until now. I have to say, why is it called the "Castle" when it's more like a mansion? I don't get that part. Anyways, I finally got a track to check this place out, from the outside since during the pandemic, inside tour is closed. This castle is definitely a great spot for people to take photos and videos as it's photogenic and has a nice spacious space. I do have to say that it does have this eerily vibe to the structure and the overall surrounding. It's located across a cemetery and it's just have this uneasy vibe to it, but it is a cool spot to explore and roam around the property. And there is a bridge near it that you can see the view of Hamilton. It's a cool spot.
"... and here's where the servants lived. As you can see they didn't have very much, and it's not very nice..." It's bigger and nicer than any house I've ever lived in, but thanks ????
There is lots of open grassed areas with plenty of shade. Great for your kids, two legged or four.
Fiona out tour guide, was well informed. Kept the small group that day entertained and really took her time walking us through the house. It was a fantastic tour
A trip back in time. Guides know their stuff. They have an amazing garden...sometimes they give you made from scratch goodies.
Lovely for walking and if you hit the secret blackberries at just the right time in the summer... fun treat :)
This is an amazing place for the whole family. Had a wonderful time ????
Great historical site. Very informative.
If you like history and nature... then you'll love this place
I had a complete entire tour of the inside of the Dundurn Castle. I learned a lot about the history of Hamilton and Canada. I would definitely recommend the tour.
Great experience of "Downton" Castle. ????
So beautiful place for relaxing
The staff were nice and we had a good history lesson
Really disappointed with the staff. We had a permit to do photo's till 6 pm and another group wanted to film there. The staff tried to get us to leave and made our group uncomfortable despite having a permit unlike the others. Overall it is a beautiful place just make sure you have proof of a permit and even then staff may be indignant because they prefer film crews with no permit. Ultimately they honored the permit but we felt very rushed as they allowed the film crew to work around us.
It's a very beautiful place.
Beautiful and historic site. Great for a walk around the yards in the summer and don't miss the Christmas tours in the Winter.
Very well furnished with period correct furniture. The person leading the walkthrough did a amazing job.
Great price, incredibly knowledgeable tour guides. Great day trip.
Nice historical place..well preserved..History amongst greenery
Unfortunately it was closed when we arrived, took some great photos.
It's a classic old house, lovingly maintained
A lovely spot we discovered by chance. We were too late to actually go inside the castle but we did get to tour the grounds and experience the kitchen garden. It was great walking through and experiencing all the history dundurn historic site had to offer! Will come back soon.
Beautiful and Interesting! Great place for a walk
I like the property but the restoration work not very attractive as all the coloring is off and does not match. The animals and gardens were well kept though. Not sure why it's called a castle. Overall wouldn't really recommend going out of your way to visit. Maybe inside the "castle" it's better but I can't say as I could not go inside.
Such a great place to visit. The guided tour was awesome. The staff were great with my kids (6 &10) and we learned so much. It was a great hour long tour. And we did another hour looking at museum and the grounds.
We took a guided tour with Alex! He was very knowledgeable. We asked lots of obscure questions and he had all the answers! The tour takes you back in time and felt magical! We were even served authentic from the time shortbread by the lovely cook in costume. I learned so much and I will definitely come back in the summer to explore the grounds! My parents have travelled all over the world and said it was their favourite guides tour ever! Wow!!! Great job! Great place!!
Excellent tour of an interesting building. Twice daily there is a free tour of the kitchen garden. The hour paid your the house is interesting. Our guides were knowledgeable and very friendly. We didn't get food as the end of our tour, unlike other groups.
A beautiful place for anyone..
Situated on the banks of Burlington Bay, this castle was built in 1835 and has a historical significance. The castle with all the original furnishings and paintings is a feast to the eye. The Guide was very knowledgeable and takes you around the house explaining every bit in detail. Worth mentioning is the naturally flavoured apple water and raisin tea – which you get to sample. There is also a military museum and a kitchen garden. There were some plant giveaways on the day we visited, and we could collect – Strawberry and Rhubarb. Nice place to visit at least once.
Beautiful historical site. I spend a lot of time for walks and relaxing on the grounds. Walking through the garden at various times of the season is fun. I always enjoy talking with the gardeners, and learning about different foods and the amazing way they grow. The castle tour is a reasonable price and even though I've been there so many times, I learn more about the history every time. I love the employees and how much they get into character. You can tell that they really enjoy what they're doing.
I booked this tour for my fiancé, who is a total history nerd and he absolutely loved it! The Castle itself is gorgeous and we got some amazing pictures. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and took us on all 3 floors. Parking here is free and there is lots of it. There is also a war military museum, which you get free access too. I would totally recommend this place!
Best tour guide! Very knowledgeable. Really enjoyed our time there.
Beautiful castle with views. There's big space for kid running around.
We were driving trough the town and wanted to sight see the main attractions. Since Dundrun Castle is among the TOP5, we drove just to find it was closed for that day. I'm not sure if it was closed for Winter vacation, or we were just unlucky (visited January 4th). Make sure to check the calendar before you visit :)
Pretty amazing tour about the 1 percent from the 19th century. Historic interpreters are very skilled. There is an amazing kitchen your in the basement with TREATS!
Great place to take a tour. The castle was beautiful with tons of original pieces inside. The only downside was that our tour group was on the larger side, and it just seemed to take forever to get through everything. I think I'd have rather just walked around it unguided. But the tour guide was helpful and knowledgable. I recommend checking it out. Plus you get free entry to the The Hamilton Military Museum with your tour.
Great place for a tourist outing. We walked around the grounds of the castle, it's quite something to see in person. The $37 for family pass is a little pricey in my opinion and we didnt see any ghosts. But the tour was good and so was the guide. You can walk around the grounds without paying.
Visit the Castle in mid October with a tour by City of Hamilton, celebrate Hamilton 175. Must visit place in Hamilton, worth to come.
Nice immersion in the last 150 years of local history.
Small fort with 400 years history, quite small, not a lot things to see. if the price is 5$ instead of 15$ it would make visitors feel better
Didn't go into castle. Outside nice. Not as majestic as I thought it would be.
I always recommend people to drop by Dunedin Castle. You won’t regret it. Probably a great option if visiting Toronto and near by areas. The house of one of Canada’s first prime ministers has lots of original furniture and is well restored. You will feel you are brought back in time. Plus the working kitchen oven is a real treat!
Beautiful Sunday so decided to take a drive to Dundurn Castle. We got lucky and the entrance fee was waived that day to the Castle and the Military Museum. The Cock Pit was open for viewing also and it's only open about 4 times a year! It was enjoyable for us adults and had enough interesting features for my 11 year old Grandson.
Interesting history live
It's a nice way to spend a few hours. The tour is very interesting and informative. I much preferred their format over Casa Loma where you just kind of freely roam.
better in pics, need facade restsutation. a show of the bold riches of the past
We came here on a family excursion. I haven't been since I was a kid and it was another great revisit. The tour was very informative and the guides are well trained. Great place to take guests from out of town and an inexpensive way to learn some history and to marvel at a wealthy family's life 150+ years ago. Buy online- 20 percent off and wonderful senior pricing.
Such a great place to go. We had lots of fun learning about the family and quasi Prime Minister who lived here. And my wife and kids and even I had a blast with the very inexpensive flower arrangement making add on in the gardens. Staff at the venue are amazing and so friendly.
Always Great to walk around the grounds. And it helps living next door. It's a fantastic green space in Hamilton
Awesome place. The house is beautifully restored to give visitors insight into what life was like for the colonial elite in the Victorian era. The best part is the guides, who take you through something like 40+ rooms and recite the history of the house from memory and with great enthusiasm. Easily comparable to Casa Loma but greatly underappreciated.
Our camp used the coach house and had a tour of the mansion. The staff were kind, patient, enthusiastic, and put in loads of extra effort. The grounds and buildings beautiful and cared for. Please visit, you will not be disappointed.
Beautiful and historical house, not actually a castle, but as close as you’ll get by Canadian standards. Lots of history, excellent value for a guided tour. Very enjoyable
Absolutely stunning site, a revealing look at how the wealthy lived in Early Canada. The costumed interpreters are knowledgable and professional. A great family outting! Non-flash photography is permitted.
15 people was likely 5 too many for the tour. Nice Christmas display.
Exploring the house on your own would be a waste. The Tour guides really know their stuff! Make sure you go on a tour, its amazing to see what really went on in an upper class house back then. A staff of 15+ to cater to a single family! So yes, Its a really great way to spend a few hours. They stay true to the era and really maintain the house beautifully.
Great tour. Fabulous old home. Great value. Admission price includes admission to the Hamilton war museum. Fascinating history. Friendly staff.
A magical spot in the city. Beautiful.
This place was a highlight of our visit to Hamilton, ON. Steeped in history, our guide, dressed in period correct garb, provided a wonderful hour long tour of the facilities....don't miss this place if you're in town.
Take the tour! Fascinating look into a historic site. There's a cute little gift shop attached, too. I think we got a book for my father there. The surrounding park is also a pleasant walk.
Very good tour... the girls knew it all. The mansion is amazing!
An amazing experience, it was like we time travelled back to the 1800s. Kids really enjoyed it to, lots of crafts and activities . The tour was awesome got to learn more about history in our city.
Really enjoyed the guided tour. Lots of history. Family friendly. Highly recommend it.
History... great tour!
Definitely a place to visit if you're going to Hamilton! The tours are every half hour and admission is around $10 in general. The tour was very interesting and the costumes and fresh shortbread from the kitchen made it that much better. If you love Victorian architecture and design you'll definitely enjoy your visit here!
Spent a whole Saturday afternoon touring the inside of the castle, kitchen garden, military museum and the grounds. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. Admission price was reasonable considering you get a guided tour. Highly recommend this place!
I great place to learn about the history of Dundurn Castle. The people and lives of 1887.
Dundurn was beautiful. My husband and I toured it for our 2 year anniversary. Even though our tour guide wasn't an official guide she did splendidly. It was perfect.
Beautiful Building with a colorful history. Sir Alan MacNab's former residence is kept in pristine condition by a friendly group of knowledgeable volunteers. Highly recommend visiting this 200 year old treasure.
I would definitely recommend coming here if you have a Hamilton Public Library card since it's entirely free to take a tour of you have one. Parking is also free.
Many performances and events to look for here. It offers a chance for visitors to be embraced by nature as well
I love that place. History and fun.
Huge value your with a guide (Alex) who knows the history. Well done.
It had been around 30 years since I took the tour at Dundurn Castle. Always very interesting and well worth the cost!
Right now it is temporary closed. But when it's open, it is really great place to visit. Especially in christmas time, they put special decorations for the season. You also can take a walk surround the castle now although it is closed.
Fantastic visit for going out with friends or family. The instructor Frank described the history of the castle very well.
Gorgeous architecture with a stunning view! Right by the lake! If you are in the Hamilton area, this is a must see!!
Really interested in the history of this place. I had never been there but cool for sure. Some beautiful picture opportunities and something you don't expect to see in southern Ontario
Beautiful place for history. Abut ????????
It is a beautiful place. You should walk around the castle to enjoy the sight and history of the place.
Interesting visit. They take small group of people for a tour of the Chateau and explain how rich people lived at that time. It would have been better in French as all the people in our group were French speakers and they did not fully understand the explanation. Not expensive at all.
Excellent place to go, you will need 1 hr aprox for you visit no more than that. Each tour is around 20 to 30 minutes with a guide. It is very interesting, i really enjoyed a lot and my 4 kids too, they also have 2 exposition like militar museum that is interactive especially for the kids, they can play with some toys and music instruments etc. The mansion was very cool, and the tour is very informative. They also offer some cookies in the kitchen, that was very nice. Great experience! For a very affordable price we paid 32 dolars for a group of 2 adults and 4 kids.
They have guides to show the whole castle.a different experience.
It's a beautiful place to take photos!
The entry fee gets you a nice tour of the castle. There is a lot of interesting history there, which is relayed along with some humour. We didn't go when the gardens were open.
Gun photo spot. Also did an awesome Ghost Walk here. Good times!
Fantastic tour. Highly recommended
Wonderful passive park, very relaxing with great views and history
Wow what an amazing place to visit!! My friend invited my family to visit the castle because I had never knew about it. Wow what a hidden gem. We had the private tour which is what I’d suggest to those interested. It was amazing to experience and learn about how the culture was years ago (1855) for sure will be making a trip again with my family.
I visited dundurn castle in 2019 and 2021. I just love its old world charm. It transports me into another era. The staff there is so cheerful and helpful too. They know interesting facts about the castle and its earlier inhabitants. Loved it.
by far my favorite museum tour it's a lot of fun.
An Indigenous exhibit for MMIWG (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls) going on from September 26th to November 5th, it's to raise awareness for the MMIWG. There's busts in the dining room, and red dresses and stories about those women and girls on the maple trees on the Maple walk path. Its beautifully executed, and emotionally moving.
Dundurn Castle is so beautiful. Beautiful place to take pictures. Great walking trails close by.
Fascinating Victorian castle with a great Canadian history.
Awesome history behind those walls.
Had a great guided tour. Reasonably priced. Gift shop was nice but a little pricey. Beautiful mansion and setting.
Have lived in the area for a while and this was a phenomenal experience. Learned a lot about local and national history in addition to how owners and staff of the house lived back in the early to mid 1800s. Staff are very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended.
I got married there on the grounds and toured the whole castle as a wedding gift from family members it was the greatest feeling to step back into this era of time and witness what our ancestors did day in day out! I highly recommend this place if your a avid photographer and love scenery and early century architecture.
Love the history so beautifully preserved. Always learn new things with the knowledgeable guides. Wonderful place to visit.
Lucas was the first person we spoke to in the gift shop when paying admission for the guided tour. He was very friendly and helpful...we enjoyed chatting with him until our guide came for the tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the house and it's history, we thoroughly enjoyed walking through the castle and even having a treat of shortbread and macaroni and cheese lol. Looking forward to our wedding there next year!
Very interesting tour of the house. The kitchen garden is even better. Very helpful staff
Very intriguing, loved learning about the history here. ???? Wished the tour could have been a bit more self-guided at times.
Fascinating place, would love to be able to wander the building on my own, looking at everything but obviously you can't due to the age and fragility of the things in the room. Staff were very helpful and enthusiastic!
Caught the last tour of the day and really enjoyed it! Highly recommended! Scott was such a knowledgeable tour guide, and as it was a quiet day, we had him all to ourselves... asked him a million questions! (Sorry Scott!) He easily explained everything from the chronology of the family dynamic to the unusually well-appointed servants' quarters... and everything in between. Wandered the grounds as well -- beautiful and very well-maintained. Plan to spend about 2 hours, one for the house tour and one for the grounds and kitchen garden. Add extra time if you plan on taking in the Military Museum on the same day -- tickets to that are good for anytime, by the way. $12 per adult is more than fair for a very pleasant afternoon out!
Nice view
A very interesting castle. The tour guide was wonderful and very informative. The castle itself doesn’t look like much from outside but it a sight to see inside. The grounds are big, leads right up to the lake. They have a large garden, and a war museum as well.
Nice place for an evening walk. Grounds are well groomed. Picnic tables nearby in park are welcome. They are covered as well. Excellent parking. Nice place to park then take a bike ride.
????????????????????????☘️
If you are fond of our Canadian history you cannot afford to miss this castle. Ample ground's, lake top view and tall trees provide cool shade all around the building grounds. Also there are covered areas with long tables for enjoying your picnic, next to the car park.
Staff are knowledgeable and dress the part. Almost like stepping back in time; a very educational tour. Scolded numerous time... DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING and you will be golden.
Wonderfully preserved and historically accurate in its furnishings, some of it being original though. Definitely take the guided tour for inside information on the lives of Sir Allan Napier MacNab and his family.
Great tour and beautiful castle.
Really nice guided tour of the home. Guide was fun and very knowledgeable. Loved it.
Great place for history lover to visit. You would understand how things worked back then and technically it was built before Canada became a country officially so it will give you a different perspective about life back then. Overall a great historical site and tour guide was really helpful.
Very cool. Wonderful staff. Take the tour. You will be impressed.
Beautiful grounds!
We did a guided tour for a small group of kids and adults. The gentleman who guided us was brilliant with the kids. He was gentle in placing boundaries (as there are many historical artefacts that could be damaged) and keeping them interested. There is much to see and appreciate.
Amazing tour! Had no idea the history of Hamilton! Very knowledgeable tour guides and a fantastic set up. Great for all ages!
Dundurn is a gem; it is significant as a local Hamilton heritage site but is also significant historically for Canada. The estate is well maintained and considerable effort has been invested to ensure accuracy in historical presentation. I have visited Dundurn numerous times and I learn different things about the estate each time I go. It's great for children and adults alike. I am so thankful that this city seeks to preserve such a magnificent treasure. Definitely worth the time to visit if you are out and about in Hamilton.
Amazing place to visit. Definitely go back and a must see for everyone.
What really stood out about this beautiful place besides the history and what took place. It was the fine little details about the space that were added but you hardly took notice; from an architectural standpoint. In terms of the tour I'd still say the Whitehern tour was far better engaging and worth listening to. However our guide was wonderful and knew exactly what he was talking about. I think if you really enjoy architecture, design and history, this place is really where you should be stopping by.
I do some ghost investigations here. Haven't caught anything as of yet.
Walked around the grounds was beautiful
The place is awesome! You can only visit by joining the guided tour, and it is an excellent experience! The house is well maintained, the tour has plenty of good information about the place, objects, owners and people who lived there. With the guided tour ticket you receive a ticket for the military museum nearby.
Amazing place to visit
Great guided tour! Free shortbread samples too! Military museum included; just a 3 minute walk to the building next door. Free parking. Informative and a overall good experience.
Take the guided tour for the best experience. Loved the explanation and was fascinated by the importance of the place and roles of the people who lived in it
Historical castle and preserved, but it's not spacious.
Wonderful and most friendly staff make the tour a unique experience into pioneer and early Canadian history and how a high class household would operate. Definitely a "must do"!
Beautiful property! The guided tour takes it to another level. A must visit for all ❤
A wonderful park, and lots of history too!
Our tour guide was more an ambassador making the foreign world of local history interesting and come to life. It seemed like TPTB want to push a Downton Abbey but when our group went off script with questions our host seemed to enjoy sharing his knowledge. So much so our tour ran over time, sad for next group but fun was had at their expense. Next time I pull out some Ruth Goldman or Alex Langland cosplay and go full on Victorian Farm on the castle!
It is a nice little place to come and spend some time. Good for wedding photoshoot. Also has a small section which you can rent for a small event of 20-30 people. They have guided tours to the musium too. There is free parking.
The castle is not as storied architecturally as it is historically. The nature and landscape surrounding the main attraction is more...attractive. I didn't see the interior, only the outside, so maybe my review is premature. If you're broke as a joke, as I am, it is a fun place to go for a picnic or just to find a bit of serenity.
A beatifull castle and a beatifull place these photos were taken by a drone if interstead go to youtube and search my name my name is the same as my account name
Step back in time - like visiting Downton Abbey. 40+ rooms of real luxury in the home of Allan MacNab, who was Premier of Canada in 1854-56. Huge grounds on the lake shore. Amazing. Out tour guide was very knowledgeable (she works as a gardener in the warmer seasons).
Ever since i was a kid i have loved Dundarn Castle. I truly have had a exellent learning experience.
Must go to this incredible historical building????????????
A great historic site, I learn something new every time I go.
It was nice and quiet with lots of open space for the kids to run around. We loved that it was a free hidden gem of sorts. We didn't get to go inside but enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.
The tour guide is very nice explained all in castle
A beautiful historic place with lots to see. There's a lot of history here so I definitely recommend checking it out
Nice place for photo shooting.
A great tour that included the entire structure, with some actual appointments from the owner. Very well presented.
Tour guides are knowledgeable and friendly, the ticket prices range but are all fair for the 45-60 minute tour. Grounds are beautiful and definitely worth a visit if you enjoy Canadian history.
A stunning castle, highly recommend the tour
Wet rainy night. perfect for the Halloween venue. learned much about the building, history and the family.
It's a nice clean park, will come back again for sure
Nice walk or to sit and read a book under the Trees
I have not been since covid began, but as i pass it I am flooded with fond memories of many years as well as last visit 4 yrs ago. Similar to casa loma in Toronto there are themes for christmas taking you back to the old days of churning butter and baking cookies. The costumes and displays are wonderful to see for your own eyes. The depiction of that era and how they lived is just remarkable. The christmas displays about the castles is a sure way to feel holiday spirit. The gift shop is also neat having past and present themed items. Worth visiting for open doors hamilton at discounted rate or free. Historical Hamilton at its best.
Really interesting guided tour. Recommend to everyone.
Was good no complaints other than the noise below
great place to visit
Historical house maintained in it’s original condition with furnishings and stuff. Guides explains each and every thing in detail.
A lovely place to stroll and imagine a different time.
Nice place around for a walk or picnic, not much to see or do otherwise.
It sucks that the castle is closed due to covid restrictions so we were not able to see what's inside. I imagine it being as magical as the castle grounds!
Very beautiful castle with interesting history. All the staff are all nice and extremely knowledgeable, and not just the tour guides. The tour is captivating and never gets old. I've been on it multiple times and every guide I've had has made it a memorable experience. The tour is very reasonably priced and included admission to the military museum on site. The garden is open to the public to walk around and it's a lovely walk to take at any time of year. 12/10.
Beautiful castle and a wonder historic experience. The castle gardens are amazing! Regretting not partaking in the coursed meal as the menu looked fantastic!
Great little area for a walk or little picnic
Just an amazing place visit
I enjoy touring the castle around the time they prepare the castle for Christmas ???? So Beautiful ???? The staff are very pleasant and very knowledgeable... Beautiful ????
I've been here multiple times. Nice place with interesting history to it.
Better than what expected. 45 minute tour with lots of details. Very good life behind the sense.
We had a wonderful and very knowledgable tour guide. Learned about the Scottish traditions of Hogmanay. Wonderful history in our city.
I visit Dundurn Castle many times just always ceases to amaze me downstairs got a wonderful old fashioned kitchen that cooks and very into an Old Fashioned foods on wood fire stove I highly recommend it
Wonderful piece of history in our backyard. Good to visit anytime - summer and also enjoy the garden growing. Great to visit at Christmas and see traditions of Christmas past - you might even get to enjoy som home baking
The tour is great! A real piece of history.
Love Dundurn and the Christmas tour. Great info and a beautiful old building.
A good source of information about primitive culture and family life.
Great place to take photos
Clean park, great place to walk the dog
Amazing place to learn something about history The guide was having sound Knowledge and he guided us along the castle. A must visit for people who love exploring history
Every Hamilton resident should visit here! Tourists will of course love it too. The guys are so knowledgeable and make any tour fantastic. The grounds Are So beautiful to walk anytime
My SO quite enjoyed Dundurn and the guided tour which offered plenty of history on her home town
Beautiful estate! A great spot to walk around and take some pictures.
Did you know that weddings are held here? Our violin and cello duo, trio and string quartet has performed at a location on the grounds called the Maple Walk, which is a lovely pathway surrounded by maple trees and looking out onto the bay. Recommended.
The castle was very interesting, worth viewing. However, our guide, Erika, was completely useless. If we had not visited this castle before we'd have hated the tour, since she rushed through the rooms and couldn't wait to finish, telling us absolutely nothing. When you arrive, ask for the name of your guide and if it's Erika, just wait for the next guide (20 minutes later). It'll be worth it.
The tour in the castle is definitely worth it. The tour guides are quite knowledgeable and take you around the entire house. They are also constantly trying to update the museum and make it more like the house it was in 1850 so it's great to go again and see new rooms or items they have.
Not too expensive and a great place in Hamilton to check out with the family. You learn a lot of history that took place there and the tour guides are very knowledgeable. Very cool to walk through and see everything and how it has been maintained or redone.
Like going back in time, beautiful Architecture.
Was here for a beautiful wedding ceremony for my niece, the grounds to Dundurn Castle is awesome
Awesome tour. Will definately be back again. I hear that it is a little different everytime.
The tour was more than I had anticipated...they brought us to every room in the castle. Our guide had described what living in that era was like for each individual working and/or living there. It was interesting, informative, exciting and memorable. I really enjoyed it! I highly recommend a visit.
We really enjoyed this tour, fascinating history of the family who built the castle. Knowledgeable staff and a really nice gift shop. Good to wander around the lovely grounds too.
Lovely historic museum. Excellent guided tour! Beautifully decorated interior. Very enjoyable and informative! Highly recommend for an afternoon outing!
Amazing place to go with family or friends. The staff there give you an amazing tour and explain a lot of rich history behind the architecture and MacNab family that you'd never really learn normally. Tours are free if you've got your Hamilton library card which is a pretty sweet addition! Overall fascinating and beautiful, and a fantastic place to spend an afternoon!
if you like history you have to go it is quite and has ah lot to see
Well kept by the city and good tour guide. Maybe it was weather but some of the site could be explained better from the outside. Learned lots about a time and people not known to me.
Nice place for a photoshoot!
Interesting structure, no public washroom though. Outside could be maintained better.
So sad that Dundurn Castle is closed right now because of COVID. This is one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Hamilton. I can't wait until it opens again.
Beautiful Sunday so decided to take a drive to Dundurn Castle.
We love this castle. Its beautiful and very historic. Our guide was awesome and played her part very well.
Beautiful villa built in 1835
Awesome place to bring family from out of town. I've been countless times and there is always something new to look at. The food samples are great too.
My family went to their free Canada day event. I enjoyed it but glad it was free because 30 dollars for a family is pretty steep for what we saw. The staff were also strict and I felt not that friendly but I wondered if these were volunteers for the free event. The house is very dark and for some with vision impairment they may not find it easy to navigate. They dont allow food, drinks, strollers or flash photography.
In 30 years so much has been done to this place. Lovely!
Loved the castle tour. McMaster University's students get free entry pass.Infact, any person having Hamilton's public library card gets free your of the castle.
We had come with school children and had a great time. Also attended with Haunted Hamilton for a ghostly tour. Highly recommend the tour but too noisy to get any worthwhile evidence. Still hoping to conduct a TRUE paranormal investigation there.
Great guide. Lovely history. Because it's a historic building there is no access to the second floor besides stairs.
Beautiful grounds didn't go in the building.
Sidney was an amazing tour guide!! She is clearly so passionate about the history of the castle and the MacNab family. She answered all of our questions with enthusiasm! I would recommend this tour to anyone!!
It was an extensive tour, some 40 rooms. Our guide Jennifer was very knowlegable and answered every question. You get a good feel for the era and family who lived there. Unfortunately, due to Covid we weren't able to view all 3 levels of the Military museum. I want to make another visit.
Loved the visit back in time & our tour guide was great. Look forward to going back at Christmas.
Great place for a walk
Was there in a school trip, amazing day! Our Guids were incredible!
Very good in history. In the year 1912. The war.
The grounds are well kept. Did not go inside the castle. Walked around outside.
A lovely guided tour. Highly recommend it for any lover of history and historic mansions. Our guide, Phillip was wonderful, very knowledgeable, full of historic facts, and very witty. I encourage young and old to visit Dundurn castle. We love visiting it. Thank you
Beautiful place for a walk, picnic, or even check out the vintage old barracks. And its historic relics
Visits are intended for small groups with guide. New group is going every 20 min. Great Castle, great guide.
I have been going to Dundurn off and on since I was a child. I took an American friend to visit the mansion for his first time. I can honestly state I was ashamed of the state of the estate when we toured the grounds. There was a homeless person in a sleeping bag on the porch at the entrance hall and the lawn was badly unkept. The overall condition of the house has deteriorated greatly both inside and out. The tour guide needs to wait for his party before explaining the history of the house as much of the information was lost to those people in the rear of the tour group. I was enthusiastic to show this landmark off to an American but it will be the last time. Canada really needs to treasure these architecture works of art but sadly it is not practiced much these days.
Beautiful place to see. Knowledgeable guides. I recommend trying to go with a smaller group so you have a bit more time to look around. There is generally another group following behind, so they have to keep you moving. With a large group, it can be tough to navigate the smaller rooms for everyone to have a look before you have to move on. Unfortunately, once your tour is complete, you have to exit, so the only chance to see things is during the tour.
Beautiful place to have a wedding.
Beautiful grounds
Interesting tours. Be sure to check the Garden when in season. Great care has been taken to keep everything authentic. Lovely staff and guides.
Interesting tour with the bonus of a complimentary fresh baked hot cross bun!
Great house and great Shortbread in their Victorian Kitchen! Great gift shop too where the tours begin.
Great historical site. Filled with rich history of the area. Tour guide was very knowledgable
The master bedrooms were under construction and empty I wish they advertised this because that was my favorite part and I wouldn't have wasted 1.5 hrs driving there and paying almost 30 for 2 tickets not knowing until the very end that they're not included. Very sad. Also the guide kept mentioning a film that took place a few days or a week ago so rooms were very empty and not decorated the way they should have been:( tickets should have been discounted or make it accurate before people arrive.
An amazing historical place. You really feel like your going into the past when you go inside the castle. It's huge also, so there are many rooms to see and enjoy inside the castle. Also the outside of the castle and the scenery around it looks beautiful, so it's both a good place to enjoy sightseeing and to take pictures (including family and wedding photos) in my opinion. I also like how you get a guided tour around the castle (which is included in the admission). And the museum beside the castle ( admission to the museum is included with the price of the admission to dundurn castle) it is quite nice with an amazing collection of antiques in it. The only reason why I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 is because I don't think the hours for the museum are good.
Very enlightening tour providing the history of Sir Alan Macnab and what life was like in the 1850s for the rich and for the servants. A lot of effort has been spent to provide authenticity.
Such a great tour!! Thank you!
Nice place but staff is extremely rude and unfriendly towards patrons. Would never visit this place again. Or recommend it to anyone. It costs nothing to be nice. They need training with their manners. They are all unemployable people that work there. Miserable Sad they live their lives like that. Would remove the one star if I could. Considering a formal complaint with the city of Hamilton
A fascinating place to visit. Take the tour to understand life above and below stairs.
A great way to spend the afternoon, the story and history behind the castle is amazing. The guided tour was 30 mins and I would have wished it was longer because the museum has 40 rooms! So there is alot to see, there is also an adjacent small military museum which is also worth a visit. Just visiting the exterior grounds without actually opting for the tour is also wonderful.
My wife and I had a really informative, thorough and conversational tour of this really interesting historical site (thank you Scott). While the somewhat austere construction of the building might dissappoint some at first, it is a fascinating glimpse into the enormous leadership and impact of the McNab family on the economic development of Hamilton and indeed the defense against the Americans during the War of 1812. The interior is so well reconstructed and preserved. From the first flushing toilets to formal reception rooms to intimate bed chambers to the skillet in the basement...all worth seeing. We enjoyed all the details of life portrayed and will return for the adjoining military museum included in our admission.
A nice place to see some local history, and enjoy some excellent scenery! Great tour guides, and a lot of fun for the family!
Amazing place and out tour guide was so much fun! (He even does cooking classes in the castle!)
Spectacular architecture and grounds
Such a beautiful place to visit. Free parking. We stopped for a quick look, although the castle was closed for inside tour. We walked around the castle which was also worth it. There is a picnic pavilion close to the parking lot. Castle is right beside parking lot.
Beautiful place for walk and chili ...
nice walk
Extremely informative. Great and knowledgeable tour guide. Fantastic historical building. Very reasonable price. Closes at 4:p.m..
Amazing guided tour lasting around 45 minutes of this historic mansion. Our guide was super knowledgeable and passionate about the house. Kids loved the stories about beer drinking 8 year old servants and the innovative flush toilets. Interesting to see how people lived in those days. The house is packed with interesting rooms to discover, each one with a unique story and creepy basement that had a life of its own. Kitchen garden is enjoyable with options to pick berries. Would definitely recommend this if you are looking for something to do in Hamilton. Tours run every 20 minutes or so.
Very interesting tour, the guide was very knowledgeable. Small group was great. Perfect mid-week activity to learn about the heritage of Hamilton.
Had a wonderful tour of Dundurn! Our guide Jen was outstanding and provided a wealth of information. At the Hamilton Military Museum Kelly was very welcoming and answered all of our questions. Highly recommend checking out the site if you're in Hamilton!
Very pretty for family fall-leaves picture taking. Free parking and tree looking. Smaller space, but all families doing the same were very respectful.
Have great tours of 18th century life.
Everyone needs to come here and take a tour. Learned so much coming, and love that it’s free with a library card! Loved my experience here
Very well looked after historic structures and gardens. Guided tour and its not too expensive. Your admission covers the Dundurn manor (castle), war museum and the gardens. The manor is furnished and well maintained in era authentic furniture and knick knacks. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the history of the area, structures and inhabitants. The war manor is small but has a lot of artifacts. There are activities for kids and the rest of the family. This is worth the visit if you're at Dundurn. The garden is also quite impressive. The was a gardener there who was also very knowledgeable and helpful. You can pick some of the fresh fruits and vegetables as indicated by the staff and signs. We would recommend this stop on your journey. Allow 3 to 4 hours to see everything. You can squeeze it all in 2 hours if you're tight on time.
Beautiful area to take the dog for a walk.
Great time. Guide, Jennifer, was wonderful and handled the little kids (that weren't really watched by their parents) very well. Great cookies in the kitchen too. The gift store agent was a little grumpy, but we only briefly interacted with her.
The staff was incredibly friendly and fun alex was our tour guide he was so knowledgeable and smart and told us everything there is to know inside and out about the house and family we had a wonderful time and would absolutely suggest if you get the chance to go and see it go its truly amazing.
Took the tour and it was a great learning experience. The guide was very nice and knowledgeable. It was very interesting to see how the people lived back in those days.
This is a great place for kids and adults. Our son had a school trip to Dundarn Castle and he couldnt stop talking about it so we decided to take him and our youngest again, and we all loved it. The Castle as well as the grounds are well maintained and you do get a feel of the history. Its not huge for a museum but its just perfect in terms of how much you get to see and experience, without getting tired. Would recommend to anyone and go back again.
One if my favorite photo spots is the grounds kf Dundurn Castle. There is plenty of beautiful background and space to roam around and take pictures at.
Well worth taking the tour, we loved it!
Located on York Blvd. and bounded by lands belonging to the Royal Botanical Gardens, this 19thC house is one of several historic homes in Hamilton. Fully restored now with furnishings of the period Dundurn Castle, offers a glimpse to life in the pre-Victorian era. The main staircase was originally designed to be a hanging staircase but one of the civic minded building authorities decided an unsightly supporting post was required to insure against possible liability from any incidents arising from use by tourists. The home's past uses including a zoo, aviary and also contained a bowling alley. Guided tours begin downstairs in the kitchen and it's a world of difference to see life below and above stairs. A good family outing on bad weather days. Outdoor garden and walking trails in this area once the shoreline of glacial Lake Iroquois 13,000 years ago at the end of the last ice age. Casa Loma in Toronto, is also located along the same proglacial shoreline approximately 100' above the current Lake Ontario shoreline. Check out the neighbouring houses on Rolph's Gate and Inchbury Street and the castle's outbuildings. Convenient parking.
Dundurn is a great place to go to take in part of Hamilton's rich history. They have a lot of great events throughout the year and it is a great place fo all ages. The guides are generally very knowledgeable Dundurn's history. Additionally the military museum up along the past is great for adults and children. There is a room special for children upstairs and kids are able to understand what it would be like back in 1800's for soldiers. It is a very interactive venue.
Omg this was well worth the money. Learned alot today.
It is a fun activity. There is a guided tour to explore the rooms of Dundurn Castle. It takes almost 50 minutes to finish the tour. There is also a military museum. I would recommend anyone who loves history.
Dundurn Castle is an amazing place to tour. Lots of history. I enjoyed the tour so much. Tour guides are very knowledgeable.
I'm a member of "Head of the Lake Historical Society & we had a meeting tonight @ the great coach house!
Beautiful historical place for the whole family. Tours are possible. Or just site see and walk around.
Very interesting tour! Lots of beautiful antiques
So warm outside, the city of hamilton should put the AC on in the park. Other than that it's very cute.
Not a castle, but a well maintained mansion built in the 1830’s. The 1 hour tour was really interesting and the guide was very knowledgeable. The grounds are beautiful and it is worth viewing the gardens.
Beautiful, clean and we'll maintained park ...with a castle! Open spaces with lots of mature trees, ample parking and usually not crowded. If you like local and Canadian history, this is a good place to start.
Beautiful.....so old yet so keenly built....if u wana go for a half day trip without getting tired but still feel pleasant & relaxed then this will be a good visit. Also, make sure to visit the Spencer Smith park near by...totally good combo!!!!!
Beautiful grounds, well done historic tour.
Great tour of the Castle
I was only on the outside and this castle is a beautiful backdrop to any pictures or moments you want to capture in a camera or your memories ????
Guide was great! Loved the Castle!
All the staff were very knowledgeable and entertaining. Great activity for a rainy Sunday
Amazing. Staff was very friendly, great service, and lovely tour. Great opportunity to learn some Canadian history and feel connected to the past. The grounds are lovely and perfect for a family outing. 10/10 recommend.
Very nice historical place. Guide was very knowledgeable.
Nice Museum to visit. Tour guide is very informative, I will definitely return for another visit!
A beautiful place for a wedding
Lovely day to utilize the lovely grounds, part of Hamilton's history. Quiet and peaceful. Soon to be busy, hopefully.
Great tour. Engaging guide and lots to see.
Very beautiful except the box with the used needle behind one of the buildings ???? i made staff aware.
Great location for wedding photos. We were here for my brother's wedding. Lots of great shots from all over the property.
Tour guide Scott very knowledgeable. Very interesting tour.
Very cool. Came here on family day, so it was a little busy and we had a wait of an hr or so for our tour but we spent the extra time viewing the museums. The gift shop here has some unique items that you wouldn't find at most Canadian gift shops. The tour guide was friendly, and knowledgeable.
It's a National Historic Site. It is very well maintained and the history behind the grounds that you learn from the tour is amazing
My oldest recollection of Dundurn castle was the micro zoo adjoining the castle. Here you could find a large bird cage and a monkey cage. As a child these were a small connection to a foreign world. My greatest fascination though was for the guard house at the corner of Dundurn and York streets. As kids in the early 50's we discovered that if we went to the kitchen in the basement we could access a tunnel that took us directly to the guard house. This was a regular event for us that was as exciting as the adventure movies of the day. We created our own identities and set up security for the castle. We never fired a canon but we successfully protected our castle from invaders.
Gorgeous landmark. Quiet and peaceful area for nice walk.
I can see myself living there in the museum and just hear the history over and over and over is awesome. And the rooms are and the furniture is out of this world. So if you haven't seen dundurn Castle you need too
Great history, if you are interested on the early days of the golden horseshoe. It's worth seeing.
Great castle! Beautiful art works. Need a little more on organizing skills
Best place for our history. Great for kids.
It was an awesome historic place to visit . With some knowledgeable guide for your tour.
We enjoyed the heck out of this tour! Hubby doesn't usually like old houses and old house tours but he was caught up in the fun.Okay...It's a mansion not a castle but it's very Downton Abbey. We started in the gift shop where Luke was amiable and fun. He assured us that our tour guide (also named Luke) would make it a great tour. He was correct! We spent about 90 minutes touring all three floors of the home. A lot of the furnishings and accessories are not original but it was still a great tour. The house could use a little landscaping but it was cool to see it and the surrounding grounds. Luke was a wealth of information. Both Lukes could use a raise! Great customer service! Thank you both!
Great price for a tour. The tour guides are always very knowledgeable. I also saw that the prices for room rentals were very reasonable, although I did not end up using that service.
I have many great memories from visiting as a child. I look forward to going agian in the near future. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and make the castle come alive. I really enjoyed a recent tour of the garden, it is gorgeous and well tended.
Great piece of Canadian History. Informative guided tour. Beautiful gardens.
Over the years, I have been at Dundurn maybe 5 times, this time visiting with friends. This mansion got slightly renovated and looks really impressive. The old luxury. Our guide this time was Alex, who was by far the most knowledgeable guide Ive met in Dundurn. Learned quite a few new things about history of the place. And pickled carrots in the kitchen were also super delicious :)
A good educational experience. A glimpse into how households operated and how the lives of wealthy compared to their servants.
Tour was great, but this is only a castle if you're the size of an ant.
The tour was good but would have enjoyed a self guided tour so we could have looked at things longer.
It was a nice historical site!
We went for a tour this past Saturday and absolutely loved it - learnt so much and it was such a beautiful building. At the end of our tour our guide (whose name I can't remember) told us it was her first tour ever. Would have never guessed. She did a fantastic job with lots of interesting stories and historical tid bits.
We had a "new"tour guide. She did a great job she seemed like an expert to me. The tour was informative and the castle was great. The tour guides make the tour personable and take you back to the time period. My family enjoy it The tour is about 90 mins and gift shop is good Remember to support local History and Sites to There is not too many left
A must see in Hamilton!!!
Beautiful home, intimate tour of entire house. Staff were very informative. Great way to see how people lived 160 years ago.
It was a wonderful experience to understand what a Victorian Christmas would have been like. The Castle is filled with period pieces and authentic reproductions. The tour guides are very professional. One of the best facilities that i have ever toured. I highly recommend the tour. Hamilton should be proud.
Exquisite historical location. Take the tour inside!! Christmas is quite nice inside the castle. Help support this landmark that protected Canadians from invaders and has so much culture and significant lineage.
Nice park but not very cared for.garbage bins are few thus ones in place are always overflowing
Very cool, knowledgable staff. I would go back in summer.
Great tour, we did the ghost walk, enjoyed the Christmas one more, but still good
Great look back at Canada in 1800's Well worth the admission fee.
Go check out the tour. It's an hour long, and you can see the inside of a really fancy ???? in Hamilton!
Awesome! Really enjoyed the history lesson and learning what life was like at that time. Great place to for the entire family.
Both my 11-year old son and I really enjoyed the guided tour. The guide was very knowledgeable and informative. We learned about Canadians' lives in that period of time. It is a beautiful house to see to say the least.
Great place, nice big parking lot for instore shopping.
Having the archeologist doing the tour was an added benefit. Doing the Christmas tour was the best. Job well done
Victoria was our guide and she was fantastic. Great place to go for March Break. Free admission with Library card
Very fun place to visit staff is very friendly. Great for kids.
I luv Dundurn Castle. It is sooo peaceful there. I would recommend u go there urself. Great 4 walks or castle tours.
This is truly a wonderfully preserved piece of Canadian history. The tour guides are also very knowledgeable, kind and very enthusiastic. The whole tour is very interesting and I especially loved the basement part! It's definitely well worth the visit!
Nice date activity worth the $12 tour charge.
Beautiful, fantastic and definitely worth the trip. Such a wonderful example of architecture, every angle of it is stunning and the elegance is captured just right
Have been here numerous times and love it everytime. Our tour guide was fantastic.
The sites here are fantastic
This place was stunning on the inside. Although most of the things were dated, it added to its character. While on the tour we got to see the front foyer, the main living room the study and the dining hall as well as the bedrooms. I was more intrigued by the downstairs. How there was a whole other house down there. While in the kitchen we got samples of short bread cookies as we visited during the Christmas season. The staff seemed to be knowledgable about the history of the castle and tended to answer our questions. If you are looking for something fun and quirky to do for the day, I would recommend coming here.
Fun outing to see an historic house of the lawyer who got all the paperwork done for Canada's independence from England. Interactive tour
Beautiful scenery and always kept clean. Love going for walks here.
Nice place to relax and walk . I love the history around the place.
A fantastic place to go for a walk. The grounds are so beautiful. I highly recommend taking the tour inside.

1st time to Canada, this was stopping point for us..well worth it..our guide was very knowledgeable and my family learned a great deal about the history of the home and those who lived there
Lovely walking paths and garden. Plenty of picnic space and parking
Great, Informative visit. Our guide knew the answer to every question. Well worth the visit.
The guide was very friendly, funny and knowledgeable.
Such a great guided tour i’ve more then i can count on one hand for tours and cooking classes and every time i go i learn something new about history! The staff is incredibly knowledge and they make the tors and classes a lot of fun!
It's a gracious elegant home. It gives you an insight into how the people lived in that era. You are given a tour of the home by guides wearing clothing appropriate to that period. You see so many interesting and fascinating things. There is also a museum on the grounds as part of the tour. Also there is a beautiful flower garden and large vegetable garden. There were staff in the vegetable garden harvesting organic fresh tomatoes when we were there. We were given samples to take home. We had not been to Dundurn Castle in a long time and our visit was like seeing it for the first time.
What a fantastic experience! Definitely recommend coming for a guided tour of the castle; it is interesting and educational for both adults and kids. Big appreciation to our both knowledgeable and passionate about his work guide. The photos are nothing without the story behind them, such attention to details! We’ve enjoyed the tour so much! Check out a little gift shop, and bring you lunch/tea to have in a nearby park with picnic tables. And make sure to book online; it gets sold out pretty quickly.
Great historical place...how the elite used to live...and the lower castes... tour guide was most helpful...put everything in perspective..
