Fabulous time whale watching, many thanks Captain

Hi

This tour takes you up the coast to see the beautiful scenery and then out further into the Atlantic to find whales. We got to see TONS of pilot whales, a porpoise and seals! The captain is very knowledgeable and super friendly. He told us to walk around the boat whenever we want and come up to ask him questions anytime! It's an authentic fishing boat which makes the experience that much better.

Ted T

Got to see some pilot whales years ago. Friendly staff.

Closely observed a group of whales! It was a rainy day but the experience was great undoubtedly.

David Heffernan

It is a family business and the Captain and crew (his daughter and son) were all amazing . Saw some views of the coast as a bonus to the pilot whales we saw right next to boat!! Highly recommend this folks !! Dave H

It was a slow start but we saw pilot whales surface at a distance and Captain Fraser then steered us so that we floated towards and alongside the whales (without scaring them with engine sounds). A calf surfaced many times with the rest of the family! Very cute. We also saw curious seals and a large flock of sunning cormorants. Captain Fraser is knowledgeable but doesn't offer up a running commentary so be sure to ask him questions if you're curious. Great value for a whale tour but a bit of a drive from the Cabot Trail. Great photo ops since we got so close.

Fantastic experience! We saw lots of pilot whales, seals, and assorted seabirds, as well as being taken close to shore to see the amazingly beautiful coastline and rock formations. Our captain was so friendly and helpful, pointing out various details and even letting us hear the whales communicating underwater via the use of a hydrophone. They were also very forthcoming and helpful in advising us which day(s) to come out for our tour, as we had a long drive from where we were staying and didn’t want to make the trip for a sub-par experience. 10/10 would absolutely recommend!

S. M. JAFAR Sadek

Great experience. Underrated. Best service in this area and cheaper than their competitors.

Kate Taylor

Too rough for killer whales but we did catch sight of some pilot whales and bald eagles. The crew are very friendly and determined to see a whale! The sight seeing is breathtaking.

These guys are fantastic! The captain was wonderful with our 5 year old. He let him sit in a chair and look out the front window, entertained all of his five year old questions and let him steer the boat for a while! Oh and did I mention the whales! The captain obviously knows what he doing and we saw 3 or 4 pods of pilot whales! One of the whales swam under the boat and came up on the other side close enough to touch! We also so a seal and a bald eagle! Highly recommended!

David Goldberg

Friendliest staff and beautiful scenery and wildlife.

Margaret Arndt

Took this tour for a better view of the coastline and as a bonus saw two varieties of whales, some seals and a bald eagle. Staff are fabulous and views are breathtaking. Special thanks to Cyril!

Shanda Chavez

The Captain is friendly and funny. His daughter is very knowledgeable. Saw tons of whales and seals. The landscape and scenery were gorgeous. A+ overall.

Al Khan

Loved my tour. When you got there, they were honest about the weather condition and us not being able to see the whales and etc. If we wanted we can buy the tickets or not. We did anyways, and it great. Got to see lots of dolphin whales and other sea creatures. The staff and everyone was great. I would do this agin

The Captain and his Daughter did a great job Saw the beautiful north coast of Nova Scotia with many forms of rock and water falls. We were able to see seals and a pod of Pilot whales which became the icing to the cake. Captain was friendly and funny but a good recommendation for further improvement would be to get a microphone and amp because a missed a lot of what was being said

Daniela

We really enjoyed this tour. We were able to see a couple whales and birds. It was an amazing experience.

Thanks captain brings us to watch the whales on Aug 24! Was a great trip! We counted there were like six whales, and one of them was so close to us! It was double number as I watched 5 years ago. Also saw the eagle. Enjoyed the time!

Amber

Wonderful experience, we got to see lots of seals, jellyfish, a whale, and beautiful scenery. The captain and staff were all very friendly and made every effort to make sure we had a great time.

Had an amazing time, even with the threatening fog. We were told that they will take us out, and if we don't see anything, the cruise will be free. We were not disappointed. The water was calm, with fog up high in the air. We were taken along the coastline, with incredible views of the cliffs, as well as a bald eagle. Once we headed out to sea, we came across a group of pilot whales, which swam around the boat for a good 30 minutes. It was amazing to see them so close, with the calm and quiet of the ocean. Thankful for the professionalism of the crew, and a great time on the ocean.

Listen. I cannot say enough good things about this company. We were touring Cape Breton by road and meandering our way around and wanted a whale tour last minute. Most places we called were fully booked out or not going out based on their location and the greater chance of wind that afternoon. When we called Oshan they weren't planning to because they didn't have enough people yet, but the bay was sheltered so the viewing would be fine. They took down our name and called us back within the hour. Another group was interested in a tour so they were going to add a new sunset viewing which was not normally on the books for that night only. We said yes immediately and made our way up there. You might be a little uncertain at first given a parking lot and a small shed sized building but it houses all the needed booking and card processing items. The boat is moored in harbor and while it can fit more we were lucky enough to have around eight on our tour. The boat driver was incredibly knowledgeable and respectful of space for the animals. He dropped a microphone in the water so we could hear a pod of nearly thirty pilot whales talking to each other. It was a really magical experience! Everyone working at Oshan (it's a family business) was wonderful and even if we hadn't lucked out and seen so many I would do this tour again in a heartbeat.

Thomas Williams

This was money well spent. The boat was big enough to not get beat up on the water, but small enough to allow everyone to move around and see everything. The captain did a great job finding a bunch of pilot whales and putting us in the middle of them.

Alexis Maisonneuve

Had a fun time. Spotted small whales but was expecting the bigger ones. Maybe not in season or maybe too far out. Also, boat captain didnt speak load so we couldn't understand anything. I would suggest a microphone system or something. It would also have been fun to learn a but more about the animals.

David Weinberger

Saw a few whales, even though it was off season. Had a great time

Captain Cyril Fraser's excellent seamanship and intimate knowledge of the seas of Nova Scotia is simply amazing. In the short time we were out at sea that morning he found at least six pods of up to eight pilot whales each including young pups glued to their mother's side and large males up close and personal for us, dozens of dolphins, grey seals and an ocean sunfish. He brought us up close to the cliffs that mark the most northerly tip of Cape Breton and to the very spot where the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of St Lawrence meet. All this while managing the oceans' swells and currents with a smile and a twinkle in his eye. You're the man Captain Fraser! Thanks for the memory!

Don Coleman

Oshan Whale Watch is on the way to Meat Cove in Bay St. Lawrence. If you have a little adventurous spirit, you'll love that you searched out Captain Cyril Fraser and the motor vessel vessel 'The Oshan'. It's a family affair and they make you feel like a part of the family, not one cow in a cattle car. First the weather was iffy, but Captain Cyril had us follow him to the top of a nearby hill to see the conditions and let us make the decision. He told us his plan to stay out of the rough area offshore and that we still had a good chance to see whales. We decided to go and what a great decision. Not only did we see whales up close, but Captain Cyril would aim the boat in the direction of the whales and then cut the engine so we could hear the sounds of the whales too. It was amazing! Once we found the pod of ten pilot whales we followed them around for a long time. Once we had our fill of whales, we went towards the high cliffs north of Meat Cove, right to the light at the tip of Great Breton Island. We explored every nook and cranny back to port. We saw tons of seals and even saw eagles. Captain Cyril got us up close and personal to the cliffs and a waterfall. If you like the cattle car approach to tours, this isn't for you. If you like close and personal, this trip is for you. No it's not a narrated tour, but no question goes unanswered. I can't recommend this trip any more highly. I am sure glad I didn't succumb to one of the 'cattle car' whale watching adventures. This one was just so much more! The three hour tour was longer than adventure was longer than advertised. It was the 'quickest' three hours I've spent in a long time! Thanks Captain Cyril and family for the great Gaelic experience!

Great time today. Boat is large with lots of seats. Captain is very friendly and knowledgeable. On our trip they pulled out of the dock to see a family running down the hill.. instead of leaving them behind. They did a quick turn around and back to the dock. To let them on board. it was really windy so a bit of choppy ride but we did see a number of pilot whales. Sometimes it seemed like we were surrounded by then. The captain and first mate both were knowledgeable about the whales and happy to answer any questions.

Shalin Shah

The guide was good but spotted no whales. 3 hrs is a tad too long. Felt the place was overhyped from what I heard

I have to rate them a 2... we spoke on the phone a couple times and Mr Oshan was very pleasant friendly and very helpful.. he was very enjoyable to talk to and was able to answer all of our questions.. unfortunately that's all I can tell you as he cancelled the tour on the morning of the tour.. We booked over the phone and he was very clear that they might have to cancel if the weather is bad, which we were prepared for, safety first of course.. But we were out on a puffin tour not too far away from them when we got the call cancelling.. and the weather and the water was fine... So.. we were disappointed and at that point there was no time for us to book anyone else.

Awesome option for whale watching when traveling the Cabot Trail. Staff were friendly with great Cape Breton hospitality. Although we were warned that the sea was a bit rough which would likely limit the number of whales we saw, they found us a huge pod of Pilot whales! Also saw a Minke whale and dolphin. Well worth it not only for the whales but the great views of the northern coastline of Cape Breton. Affordable prices too!

Really see the whales! The captain is very experienced.

Perfect day! Perfect trip!

The Captain and First Mate were awesome. Super friendly and did everything possible to make sure we saw whales. A good size pod of Pilot whales were finally discovered and we very taken back. The start of the trip seem to be a bust with only an Ocean Sunfish followed by a dozen or so seals. The captain was disappointed that the pod of whales that had been around all day decided to move to new grounds. So he headed back as time was running out. But the pod was discovered on the return trip and we spent a good 30 minutes with them. Awesome experience and a great crew and company.

Daniel Morales

We saw around a dozen pilot whales. Then the captain caught some mackerel and offered it to the tourists. He even cleaned them for us. We got three of them and enjoyed them in our camp at Cape Breton.

Jack Wasylyk

The sea was angry and the whales were nowhere to be seen, so the captain kept our expectations realistic. We decided to go on a whale watch tour anyway, as there was plenty to see on the coast with our without whales. He showed us a beautiful cove, countless seals and even a sunfish. We were soon delighted to come upon many families of pilot whales that came right up to the boat! The captain even lowered his underwater microphone so we could hear the whales. We would absolutely recommend using Oshan Whale Watch!

The best for whales watching on northern tip of Cape Breton! The Oshan is a sturdy former fishing boat offering you stability and way more space to stand and move frome one side to the other than a zodiac. Once on the sea, don't be afraid to look around the horizon and scream WHALES! when you see something, captain and his aid cannot cover 360° but will quickly maneuver to delicately and respectfully approach the animals. Our trip was the day after hurricane Chris and not a good one but captain Fraser managed to find us dolphins, pilot whales, few beluga (which are quite rare fof the area), seals and bunch of sea birds as well. When close to whales he drops a microphone in the water and you could hear the whales communicating, kids found it to be awesome. Highly recommended.

Jordan Miles

Amazing tour! Even if we didn't see dozens upon dozens of pilot whales, dolphins and seals, I still would of enjoyed myself viewing the amazing coastline! Definitely one of the best tours I've been on!

We had a really great time exploring with the experts that were our guides. We saw pods of pilot whales and many bald eagles. It was incredible. It did rain, but the crew stayed positive! I loved hearing about how the tracked the whales and named them. I would definitely book again.

Pretty much a SCAM. Stay away from Oshan tours. Pay a bit more and try in the Fundy bay area more whales and reliable business and boats. Their boats are not capable of doing this job. We just wasted half a day of our precious time to see nothing. Captain was friendly though. One staff noted that this old boat is not good to go that far or deep. Update after Oshan response: Date of tour 1st Aug 1pm. When we mentioned to the Oshan employee at the desk that we were disapointed his response was "Thats Good" and he can't do much about that. Your business is well run in the Internet with fast responses and review responses... But from my experience operationally Oshan does not seem like a fit for this Job. (I have done many such tours in Canada and Europe Oshan was by far the worst experience)

Paul Carter

What a great experience. They take you out in a converted fishing boat around Meat Cove looking for whales. We ended up spending about 45 minutes hanging out with a pod of Pilot Whales. The scenery is stunning along the way as well. Couldn't be happier with how it all went. I absolutely reccomend them!

Thomas Miranda

Saw whales, seals, and bald eagles!

Very friendly, we unfortunately had to cancel due to the weather but they were extremely friendly and accommodating, would love to try again when I come back!

Seema Bovaird

We had a beautiful day on the water! The captain was charming and funny. We got excited when we saw fins peeking out of the water so we were blown away when a dozen whales came close to us and put on a show. Never seen anything like it! Great price and amazing experience.

BYT

The captain and his crew were very experienced in navigating the Bay of St Lawrence. We saw so many pods of pilot whales which swam close to our boat. We also saw the beautiful coastline of northern Cape Breton including rock formations, a hidden water fall which cannot be easily seen from land. We saw seals, a bald eagle and cormorants. The boat was very clean with bench seating. Given the choppy water in the bay, we were glad to be touring on a converted fishing boat instead of a zodiac. It was definitely worth it!

My boyfriend and I had an awesome time On this tour! It was just to two of us and they still took us out. We saw seals and sunfish, we didn’t expect to see whales so we weren’t too let down. We were just happy to see the coastline. The skipper was good to chat with and to have a few laughs. Overall great time! We will be taking the kids next time!

We had a great time on the boat and encountered a seal and many pilot whales on our evening trip. While we love dogs, allowing 3 big dogs in a small cramped boat did not allow optimal social distancing. I hope patrons can be made aware of this

(Translated) Highly recommended, value for money unbeatable compared to other providers. Very friendly and informative. An experience you do not do every day. Specialized and super friendly captain. We would book again immediately.

Excellent time Whale watching with the family. Kids loved watching the Pilot Whales. Added Bonus was the crew, A research team from one of the Universities documenting and tracking the whales who were very informative and great with the kids. Captain was excellent and very respectful of the Whales getting us close but not too close as to cause them any stress. Excellent experience.

The crew were very knowledgeable and friendly. We saw a lot of long finned pilot whales and seals along the beautiful coastline. The Captain takes you along the coastline to see the beautiful scenery before heading back in from watching the whales. Definitely would go out again with the Oshan Whale watch your again.

Loved it. Unfortunately I didn't see any whales, but it was fun to be out on the water. Still got to see seals and spectacular views!

Best experience of my life!!!

Cheryl & Michael Robinson

Totally worth the drive as the view of this Northern coastline alone is spectacular and chances of seeing whales and seals are very good. The captain goes out of his way to search and he lets nature speak for itself but you are free to ask as many questions as you like. [Senior/youth rates available] After the cruise if you continue to Meat Cove for some spectacular views, optional short hike and lunch the deviation off Cabot Trail is truly rewarding.

Nemanja Ivanovic

The boat captain was super friendly and they had student whale researchers that are enthusiastic and very interested in sharing information about whales and other marine life. Not only did we see 6 playful pilot whales, huge tuna jumping out of the water, a bunch of seals, eagles, ganets, etc. but we learned so much. This experience was the highlight of our already amazing trip to Nova Scotia.

Elisabeth Rubenschuh

Definitely recommend Oshan Whale Watch. Staff was very friendly and eventhough we weren't able to find any whales on our trip, it wasn't because of their lack of trying. Typically, Whale tours would offer free second ride if you didn't get to see any whales, but Oshan, knowing that we wouldn't be able to go on second tour, didn't charge us for the trip. We spent over 3 hours on the water and enjoyed every moment of it.

Lindsay Clark

The captain was super friendly and informative! We saw a ton of long finned pilot whales, seals, bald eagles, and the most beautiful scenery ever. Amazing trip on the Oshan :)

Leanor Gemme

Loved our tour. We saw whales and seals...as well as some beautiful scenery. Captain was amazing.

Rachel Macleod

The captain was so kind and I really enjoyed my time on his boat.

Alanna Fiedler

Great tour! We saw pilot whales, seals, eagles and sea birds. The tour guide and captain were very knowledgeable and a joy to tour with. If we come back to NS we will definitely do this tour again!

This was our first whale cruise. It was totally enjoyable. Not just the whales but the amazing scenery. We loved every minute of it. I highly recommend it. Irene McArthur.

A great view of fantastic coastal cliffs, seals near the rocks, and we were surrounded by a pod of Pilot Whales! Captain Fraser was friendly and fun, and we'd definitely recommend.

Great tour! Not just pods of pilot whales, also get a very good look of the coastal line, with its beautiful ice-scraped rock cliff. The captain and crew are very experienced, in tracking down and sometimes just waiting for whales to come. I just wish they can have a speaker, to make it easier to keep everyone informed and engaged more.

Amazing experience to see whales, dolphins and seals with the most professional and nicest captain ever! Thanks Cyril!!!

Nadia Rodzinski

The cheapest and the best! Hands down best whale watching tour in the maritimes, and that's comparing it to more expensive more stuffy tours taken in the same high season same conditions etc. Funny captain, gorgeous views all along the way, and tons of wild life fit for a nat geo doc. Saw 10+ pilot whales, 4 seals (two sunbathing pups omg!), 2 bald eagles and everyone had a great view on all sides all the time. Amazing! Made the whole cabot trail trip worth it.

Alex Bangasan

Awesome excursion!! We saw multiple pilot whales cruising around, had a great ride on top of the boat and did some deep sea makerel fishing in the end. Great folks with amazing sense of humour. Highly recommended.

Felicitas Bauer

The staff was very friendly and the boat was big enough so everyone had a lot of space to sit or stand and have a good view to take good pictures.

Visiting from New Hampshire again this summer we have had many wonderful experiences going whale watching with Captain Fraser and his very knowledgeable daughter Cheryl with Oshan Whale Watches. We hate to leave but will be back late September. We wouldn't go out with anyone else. P.S. If the woman on the boat who gave me the recipe for easy cheese cake is reading this....THANK YOU! Awesome! On vacation from the states and got the special treat of seeing a whole pod of pilot whales right up by the boat.
