Historic site well kept. Nice quite town and pretty neighborhood

somkietr rojanasathit

Recreation of the first Scottish immigrants who weekend the freedoms to preserve their cultural heritage and a better life in the new world. The ship landed in Pictou where the site is. You get a chance to see how they endured the hardship during the voyage. 189 persons cramped in the vessel more than 2 months in the rough sea. Sadly this recreation of the Hector now has shown sign of wood rot and will need a major restoration soon

An interesting exhibit to learn about the hardships of immigration. The museum was very informative and the staff quite nice with answering questions. Some of the decor seemed out of place ( I was distracted by a skull that was clearly a Halloween decoration) but ultimately it was worth the look. I agree that the ocean view was quite obscured by the pulp-mill pumping out fumes that could be smelled in the air.

Joseph Farias III

A wonderful old fashion history lesson with helpful guides and volunteers to answer questions!

Love the museum and the history. They had actors playing parts of the people on the ships and the ship itself was such an education. Outside the grounds, you can find a monument to the Scottish travellers who arrived on the ship and started their lives in Nova Scotia, encouraging other Scots to follow in their paths. Very fun and educational to visit while in Pictou.

Came here as part of an organized tour, so we were part of a fairly large group. The docents did a great job of describing the hardships endured by the Scottish settlers on their way to the new world. The reconstruction of the Hector really helped appreciate how hard the crossing really was. Well worth a visit.

Sandy Best

Never open when the customers are there

I'm not a big *museum* person, and I spent my life on ships, but I was quite impressed with this place. The Hector has a compelling history, of the family names you see in the area, first settlers it brought in, their hardship and stories, artifacts, photos, re-creations and videos. The staff is pleasant and helpful, and the actual Hector ship guide loves to tell you his stories. How they got so many people in just those few hard wooden bunkbeds? Why is the upper deck rotting and not the hull? What was the upper deck like, during the crossing? Ask those questions, and some of your own. For a non-museum person, I spent a great deal of time here, and enjoyed every minute. I would have been disappointed if I had traveled through Pictou area, and had not included this attraction. ENSURE you allocate a few hours, the town is small, but you will need additional time, per stop. Highly recommend you visit.

Intetesting exhibits and nice to be able to go inside ship and see the cramped quarters, but the ship is very rotted which is too bad. A new replica should get built. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Fraser Brodie

Excellent staff

Carolyn Bradshaw (PolythPam)

Fantastic setup and displays. Lots of information to read and learn about life of the settlers before they came over, and the harsh trip across the ocean to a hard life in the new world. Seeing the ship being restored is a once in a lifetime experience.

Joel Macneill

Very historic.

Rob Beaton

Awesome place to learn about the history of Nova Scotia's first settlers and the challenges they faced

Kim Rayko

Absolutely wonderful museum! The scenes make the stories come alive! So much history in a beautiful building.

Great way to have a local brew and enjoy the Harbor

Wayne Geiser

Amazing how deteriorated this boat has become since it was put in the water in 2000! The exhibits were very interesting, but had far too much reading (and I'm usually very good about that sort of thing). Still, the story is an interesting and important one.

Carlos Morales

Very interesting restoration project with a museum for learning everything related to this ship and its relevance in Canadian history

Hollie Howlett

An amazing part of history here, very near and dear to the local community. A shame they didn't keep up with the replica ship. When I was here 10 years ago it was afloat in the water and you got to check it out. Really brought to light what our ancestors faced coming to the new land.

Monkey Pig

Very informative well presented information. Gives you the appreciation of what hard ship the early settlers go through

Great museum

Mirosław Ławczys

Disappointing. We came here to see replica of Hector ship. Unfortunately, it fell into disrepair only 20 years after it was built. Seems like 18th century shipbuilders had better skills than 21st century ones. It really is a shame. Renovations are scheduled to last until 2023. Museum, however, is worth a visit. Description of 1773 Hector journey is well done.

gary thompson

Enjoyed the information video and looking around the boat.

Jean-Philippe Michaud

A must in the area, located only few kilometers away from the ferry. Hector replica is in bad shape and needs major repairs, donations are needed but craftsmen on site are doing a lot with very little.

Cameron MacLean

Mitch Henry

Great spot to see the history of Scottish immigration to Canada. Read interpretive panels ir watch a movie inside for the story of those who first came over on the ship Hector. Also a recreation of the ship is avaliable to enter outside and see how these poor souls lived for 2 months on their journey.

The board walk around the nautical museum, is picturesque even under cloudy skies. The museum itself is well maintained and includes a tour of "the Hector," a replica boat that brought the first immigrants over from Scotland. One can also visit the workshops of the blacksmiths and carpenters involved in building the replica. I was amazed at the craft- menship of the wood carvings, really beautiful. The only drawback is the odour in the air outside, along the board walk. It could be the pulp mill across the water ruining the experience .

Tom Harden

Informative and well-preserved.

Ronald Newcombe

Super interesting history lesson

Andreas Gorbach

Small museum which describes in good detail the history of the first Scottish people in Nova Scotia. Good to spend 1-2 hours with family. The ship itself is overrated.

Luke Jackman

A re-build of an historic ship that was built in the same ways the original was assembled. Down by the ship is a small Beer Garden run by the local Uncle Leo's microbrewery - they also served other local beers, cider, and wine. A must visit to enjoy the views of the Harbour (minus the pulp factory across the way) and enjoy the sunset.

Sasha MacLean

This is the most beautiful and scenic area in the town of Pictou. The town itself is beautiful but the waterfront is gorgeous...(except for the pulp mill)

Very nice scenery - picturesque . Looks like the displays and Quay area with workshops etc would be very interesting. Was here on Thanksgiving so of course closed as would be expected.

Sharon Macauley

Absolutely first class, ranks right up there with top in the world for displays, information and excellence in presentation. The ship is needing some fresh paint but no doubt is much better than the original when it crossed the Atlantic. You will not regret spending an hour or two at this amazing display of history, craftsmanship and emotion. The price is very low for the quality of the exhibit.

Frans Sanders

Nice museum outlining the history of a historic voyage to Nova Scotia. It describes things well and underscores the importance of this trip for the history of Nova Scotia. Unfortunately a lightning strike hit the mast and ruined a good portion of the boat. I have seen it in better days, see pictures in other reviews, but was saddened to its state now. Work has been set back a lot.

Rainer Fricke
