closer to 3.5 stars. Food is tastey but also a bit hit or miss. I ordered the pork noodle soup for the first time a while back and was pleasantly surprised at the large portions of noodles and thick slices of pork meat. I was definitely going to order that again. The second time, the portion was much different. There were much less noodles and although there seems to be as many slices of pork, the slices were paper thin compared to before. The bulk of the food came from the vegetables. The taste is great but the portions are inconsistent. Red thai curry tastes great, pricey though as the prices listed on the menu is for the curry itself. With the usual add on of rice and chicken becomes too expensive for a single meal.
Can’t remember the name of the soup but the flavors were really strong, could not finish half of the bowl. The pad Thai was great !! And so does the tea!!
So good! I love the tofu in the curry’s, not sure what they do but it’s very yummy!
I put in my order at 5pm and was very surprised to see an 80 minute wait time for pickup, but when I arrived 80 minutes later I could see they were absolutely slammed with take out orders - there was probably over a dozen of them that went out in my 15 minutes there and more queued up to go. There was an incredibly rude woman belittling the staff as she told everyone around her how to do their jobs, accused the kitchen staff of all being on break, complained that people who had put in their orders earlier than her got their food, loudly told everyone who entered that their meal wouldn't be ready... the front of house staff were nothing but kind and patient with her as she absolutely belittled them. I picked up my food ~5 minutes behind the texted time (I was early), and all of it was delicious. I couldn't believe they were so busy and that it turned out so good - I'll be eating all week off of my $60 dinner combo for two, great value.
A little pricey but good sized portions of quality food The green curry is ????????????
Best Thai in the city. Everyone loves this restaurant and the staff are genuinely happy to work there.
Everything here tastes so good! I’ve been going for years and I think I’ve tried everything on the menu so it’s hard to pick a favourite but their curry is incredible and pork is better than I’ve ever had anywhere. Quick serving for lunch combos. Very accommodating for gluten-free people like myself. Huge portions. Great specials. Friendly staff & management. Can’t say enough good things about Baan Thai.
Only good for takeout. New chef or cooks, updated menu within the last few months and the proof is in the food!! Service is still absolute crap. Either understaffed and waiting 5-10mins on a drink refill or your waitress decides it's time to take a break in the middle of serving you and all professionalism is washed away as you listen to her whine about her personal life to another diner. Worth the delivery though!
Big portions, taste would be much better with little bit less onion.
This place was amazing. Best take out Thai I've had in a very long time. Will definitely be a repeat customer.
The food is great but their ordering system is terrible. More than once I’ve shown up to paid orders that have been lost and not prepared. The orders are then rushed but still take an hour. Just don’t order here when you have somewhere to be!
The food and the service were quite good. The veggies were nice and crunchy, and the sauces were delicious. The staff were quite pleasant and very fast to bring everything even while the place was packed. All in all a really great place to eat, however, I will never go back because they charged a mandatory gratuity. My level of gratitude cannot be imposed upon me and therefore I am supremely opposed to this practice.
Green curry... had it before not up to par this time. Actually kinda gross, more bamboo shoots then any other veggie in my tofu curry. Pretty upset on the quality. Usually love this place. Not tonight. ): But the spring rolls were delicious, just wish my main course was as good as the spring rolls. The two stars go to the spring rolls btw. No hard feelings BAAN Thai.
Our family's fave neighbourhood Thai food. Aromatic, flavourful, Love the flexibility and options of levels of spiciness and getting to choose your protein, add-ons, etc.. Have eaten in (nice atmosphere and friendly staff) but usually tend to get takeout or delivery. Perfect food on a worknight when you're too tired to cook, having a lazy weekend or in the mood for exotic ingredients. Love the aromatic coconut curry in wintery weather, and the perfect slightly smoky wok taste of the wok-fried items.
(EDIT - 3 years later) This spot's service has improved over the past 3 years so I'm updating my review to have a higher rating. The food has changed a bit, some has gotten better, some has gotten worse but that is all up to personal judgement. The environment is good. The food isn't always 100% accurate to the food in Thailand but they do a pretty good job regardless. Overall this is a pretty good spot to get some Thai food.
Baan Thai always has great food and great service. Gaeng Gai is my favourite. Their red curry sauce is very flavourful.
A great place. I really like the pineapple fried rice! Delicious! I’ve also tried other dishes as well. Bankok noodles, etc. Worth the price!
Excellent food - Tricky Price struture! $16.95 for the Curries, and then the protein is $5.00 extra, and the white rice is $3.00. So one curry dish basically costs you $25.00 + 15% tip is $27.00 for Lunch! There are many other Thai Curries in town that are very tasty. Sorry, $27.00 for one dish is outrageous!
The vegetable red curry lunch special was absolutely delicious and a wonderful value!! Highly recommended!
Had to wait for an hour and still did not receive my food..did not order anything special..would never go there
Food is dynamite at this place and the customer service is AMAZING. I couldn't remember the name of the dish I wanted to order and ELLA said "no worries, we will figure this out together.. can you remember what is in the dish"? Absolutely in love with this young lady. She is going places my friends. Go check out Baan Thai Wok and Bar in Oak Bay and say hi to their wonderful staff (shout out Ella)
Is rice supposed to be included with the dinner for 2 options? You offer a curry with no rice? Is this meant to be saved as leftover’s? Tasty stuff just wish someone would think about how the food is eaten. 2 separate orders of D1 special, one came with less than one serving of rice the other with none at all.
The food was good, but will never order from here again. First order, they forgot one dish, sent two of another and forgot the spring rolls too. I called they offered to come back in 45 minutes with the forgotten food or put it on a credit. Decided to have it as a credit for next time we order. They said we would have one main dish and one appetizer for the mix up. Called again about a month later, placed the order (the credit plus a few more dishes). She asked for my name and phone number, then told me they didn't have a credit on file that matched my details. I told her the date and time we ordered and that it was through their website, she said it didn't matter. They obviously don't care about their service.
We arrived the restaurant by 5:30, placed our order by 5:45, and ordered nothing special but papaya salad, curry, and staff picked noodle soup. Waited an hour. All other tables after us got their food, we kept waiting and waiting and didn't even get our papaya salad which doesn't even need to cook!!! We asked friendly whether the waitress missed our order since it's been an hour. She said “of course not” and said it was very busy in the kitchen and we should “check the kitchen.” We understand it was rush hour and kitchen has been busy, but the response from the waitress was very disrespectful. If you don't want to sit here and wait until you arenhypoglycemic, do not come!!! The Baan Thai in dt is way better than here. We left angrily without eating anything...will never come to this place again.
Staff is always friendly. Thai dishes are good as well. :)
Came for lunch. Their lunch menu and prices are really good! $11 for spicy veg red curry + rice + soup of the day + spring roll. The red curry is absolutely amazing, the spice is just enough to taste all other flavours in the curry. Giving them a 4-star because tofu is an additional $4, really pricey for an add-on compared to all other places.
Meal type
I'm gluten free and if I'm going out for diner this is my choice for sure! It has great, friendly staff and great service. I always get pad thai and spring rolls, and they are delicious. The spring rolls are cooked in the same thing as wheat so if your seliac don't get the spring rolls but if not they are amazing! They have daily specials and on Wednesdays the spring rolls are a dollar!
Not good, but not bad. The lunch value pad thai with soup and a spring roll is unbeatable. Would recommend. Quality is ok.
The best thai food in VICTORIA will be back for more.
Wow. Absolutely amazing Thai food. The flavour and freshness was unreal… this is the best Thai I’ve ever had. It was so good we ordered an extra couple dishes to go for our native Thai friend to try… she agreed it was authentic, high quality Thai food. Excellent.
The food is delicious! The staff and environment top off a great meal! Always a "Go To" for us and when friends visit.
Wow wow wow ???? this has to be the best Thai restaurant in town and it has only gotten better. I'm usually a green curry gal but ordered the Gaeng Galee yellow curry with chicken and the flavor profile was something else. The prawns appetizer was delish also!!
I ordered takeout from this restaurant, the dining area is small and not very private, but nicely decorated. The service was very good, but the food was only average, maybe slightly below. I ordered Pad See Ew to go, and it was a very small portion for the price, and wasn't very flavorful or exceptional. It had more of a fish flavor than I am used to with pad see ew, and I will try other Thai restaurants before I visit Baan Thai again, it wasn't great food or good value, and I wouldn't order that dish again.
Cooking is top notch with authentic flavors and ingredients. Portions are big enough to even take some of your food home. Nice atmosphere and great staff! Definitely would go again.
Good food, quick service & friendly staff
i often order take away from here and the quality is consistently good. highly recommend trying them out. ????????????????????
I really enjoyed eating here. The food was tasty and the service was good. I ordered the red thai curry and the spring rolls. The restaurant itself had a nice ambiance to it and was quiet when I went (Wednesday around 5pm). I will definitely be eating here again!
Dinner
Put in online order for delivery between 5:22 and 5:52. I received a text telling me my food would be dropped off at 5:42. Nothing showed up and when I called at 6, I was told my food was being "packed up" and wouldn't even be ready to go out the door for another 10 minutes. I know it's a rough time for restaurants, but change your online system if you can't live up to it!! Good thing there are plenty of Thai options in town.
Ordered over $100 worth of food online, given a 60 min wait time and order ID. When we called in after 45 mins, they said they didn’t have our order even though my card had been charged. Customer service was unapologetic, saying that we probably made a mistake online. They finally found our order, and said it could be ready in an hour (2 hours after we originally ordered). Had to cancel the entire order as our 4 year old and 2 year old were hangry by this point. Great food, terrible customer service.
I tried this place for the first time last week and I liked the food and the staff there was friendly.
We had a fantastic dinner last night! It is remarkable how smoothly things were running considering the restaurant is probably as short staffed as the rest of the industry. Despite having to work long hours, Anna and the rest of the staff were incredibly kind and treated us just like we were family coming over for dinner. Each dish we ordered was fabulous - so tasty and perfectly prepared. The veggies are vibrant and crisp, the sauces perfectly balanced and irresistible. I hear strories about how decimated the restaurant staffing situation is while also being overwhelmed with having too much volume of business. This is usually a good problem but in these past weeks it has pushed people in the industry to their max. It is remarkable that this restaurant is making consistently delicious food on a good day let alone under these circumstances. We will be eating our leftovers happily and gratefully today!
Amazing food! I order from here all the time and I have never been disappointed!
I feel like the food has been on a steady decline here for several years. The prices continue to go up, and the portion sizes and quality continue to go down. This used to be one of my favorite places in Victoria, but after the third consecutive lackluster meal last night, I'm thinking I'll be switching to Sookjai as my go-to.
Absolutely abysmal delivery experience. They sub contract their delivery though door dash and the food showed up an hour late and cold. I will never order from here again.
Very good place to get delicious food and good service. Very happy with the options and size of portions you get. Thanks
Really good food. The wait times for pick up are sometimes wildly optimistic.
Wonderful and cheerful staff helped us thoroughly with our order, and there was no rushing or impatient demeanor. The food was absolutely perfect, and the spice level sure knocked away the colds! Definitely five stars here! :)
Baan Thai is a great experience! The ambiance & mood is delightful. …
Very surprised by its smaller size in comparison to other thai places we've been to. We are travelling from Vancouver and usually the price reflects the portion of the dish. The flavour is wonderful. Pad thai is made with tamarind sauce instead of tomato sauce. It could be during covid and the size was smaller considering the extra cost of the services. I would recommend people trying this place however be prepared to needing to order additional food than other thai restaurants.
Baan Thai has really gone downhill. I have recently had meals in two Baan Thai locations and they were poor. We used to be regulars there but after eating at other Thai restaurants I will …
So after being on hold for 20 minutes on the phone, ordered online only to find out, after credit card info submitted and purchase is finalized, that wait time is 80 minutes. This info should be provided up front. …
Probably my favourite Thai restaurant in Victoria. I'm a vegetarian and I eat here often. The staff is so great for making dishes without oyster or fish sauce and the servers are always so friendly and accommodating. I'd say the best thing about this restaurant is the freshness of the food - the basil, broccoli, and peppers always taste like they were just picked. My favourite dish is their "Drunken Noodles".
Modern friendly ambience and staff. Very tasty and authentic, I've been to Thailand before. They were nice enough to give me an extra free spring roll! Which is very yumyumz too! Went with my dad last week too, and it was a good dinner meal! Only suggestion is I wish you use Thai Elephant brand Jasmine Rice instead. Thanks again for the free spring roll!
Every dish I've tried (and there's been a few over the last 3 years) is delicious!!!
Can’t fault Baan Thai as a go to Thai food option. Food is always good quality, reasonably priced and the place is open late. Can’t ask for much more.
I love the food and the generous portions but the spring rolls were just too oily!
So let me start out by saying I really like Baan Thai. They are, in my opinion, one of the best Thai places in city. However my most recent visit with some friends left us all very unsatisfied with experience. Myself and 2 friends arrived at roughly 6PM and got a table relatively fast. We then got our drinks, ordered our meals and some appetizers and waited. The appetizers came out in a timely fashion however our food did not. A table of 2 sat down beside us maybe 5-10 minutes after we ordered. They ordered, got their food, ate and left. We were a little perplexed by this, but thought maybe the kitchen was just busy. There was also a table of 5 that sat down after us and then they got their food before us. We hadn't been approached by any of the serving staff in this time (it was 715PM) so we piped up and asked what was going on. The server apologized and went to check. Our food was brought out to us at almost 720PM and we asked to have it packed up to go since we had to leave. The server was nice enough to comp us 25% for the inconvenience although we were never told why it took so long. We finally left the restaurant at 735PM still needing to eat after we got home. When I arrived home and got into my curry I was then disappointed to discover that while there was plenty of beef, beans and the other solid parts of the dish it was very lacking on the curry aspect. In the past I have ordered that same dish for take out and there has been more than enough curry. This time it was only covering about a quarter of the dish. One of my friends also had way less veggies in her Baan Thai Garden than her partner who had ordered the exact same meal as her except with one added ingredient. Unfortunately they were unable to split what they had due to food allergies. Again I would like to mention that I really enjoy the food at Baan Thai and I'm hoping that this is just a blip on the radar. I do not enjoy writing negative reviews and I believe this is my first. However my faith is currently quite shaken and it might be a while until I go back.
If a restaurant has decent reviews but my experience differs I always give the business the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately after several meals here that were ok to meh, tonight's dinner was the worst Thai I've ever had. Both dishes we ordered tasted like they were out of a can, with what can only be described as an industrial taste and what seemed like a tablespoon of sugar. Neither my husband nor I could finish our meal.
Friendly staffs, nice food. Love their Thai ice tea. I think the price is affordable
It wasn't busy nor loud when I walked in to order take out, yet I had to repeat every word at least three to four times while pointing to the menu. I even paused to give the waitress time to input into the system and she looked at me like she was waiting me to finish my order? I guess my fault for not confirming, just felt like I was repeating non stop and trusted her confidence. Surprise, I came home to find out there was no meat added like I had requested multiple times. One dish was extremely salty, and the other was too sweet..but at least it was made within ten minutes.
The Bangkok noodles are amazing! I was in Victoria for the first time last month and I really enjoyed eating food from here!
The green curry is my favorite, it can be pretty spicy and very rich (both good things). I've tried most of there menu both in house and lots of take out. The experience is always good, the servers are very nice, the place is pleasant. The food is best in house but it holds up very well for take out.
Worst experience ever ! Ordered chicken satay and Tom ka chicken soup in the restaurant .and sit waiting in there for an hour .
DO NOT ORDER FROM HERE. I placed an order online and got a txt message saying the food is ready for pickup. after driving to the location they proceeded to tell me my food wasn't quite ready yet..... 45 mins later i was still standing there, the 6 servers that were behind the counter finally said they never received my order in the first place... and i wasn't the only one. about 10 other people standing there waiting. i then asked for a refund and she told me they don't know how to do that. over all it is by far the worst managed restaurant in victoria. no sort of training was clearly done and no managment on site to talk to. I WILL NEVER ORDER FROM HERE AGAIN.
Should be called Bangin' Thai. Cuz that Thai food was Bangin'!
One of the best Thai restaurants i have had the pleasure of enjoying. Very flavourful and the perfect amount of spice. My new favorite on the island.
Used to be best around but has gone right downhill, always ordered same thing medium spice last 3 orders have been tasteless spice wise, phone service is next to impossible to get a answer tried to call again tonight to give them one last chance but after 20 mins on hold they obviously don't care goodbye thai
My fav Thai place. Amazing curries. The pad Thai is my only complaint, bland and the spice just gets thrown on top not mixed in when you order it hot. Anything else on the menu is a win.
