REVIEWS OF Yukon Transportation Museum IN Whitehorse

No notice on their site or to anyone at the Visitor's Center that they were closed for a special event the only day a week that they are supposed to be open. We drove over 2000 miles to see this, but now will never get to see it.

Great history with pictures

Nice place that is well worth the visit, you can even buy a combo pack and go visit the Natural History Museum just a short walk down the road. The only reason I gave four stars instead of 5, is that some of the large exhibits on the outside of the building did not have any placards or information about them that left me kind of wanting to know more.

Lazy, lackluster, (college student?) staff who (A.) didn't seem to know much about anything there (B.) couldn't answer simple questions regarding the exhibits, (C.) wouldn't get off their butts for even 5 minutes to place the miniature electric train set back on its track, instead claiming they needed to call someone to come and move it the 3mm needed to get it back on its track (D.) refused to refill the empty water heater for tea/coffee and instead just removed it, then pretended like it didn't exist when I asked what happened to it (E.) failed to give guided informative tours. A complete waste of taxpayer dollars in my opinion paying a half dozen kids to sit around to do nothing but guard broken down, old, delapatated junk that's just been sitting there rotting with ZERO upkeep since I last visited 5 years ago. Which, is a complete shame as there's some cool stuff there. The only real plus was that admission was included with our Beringia center tickets (which was great BTW,) as I'd have demanded my money back. Also what's the point of telling people to keep off the badly delapatated outside exhibits if you're going to just leave it all to rot with no upkeep whatsoever? ...Pretty disappointed doubt we'll be back.

They opened especially for a tour, and let us join in. Very knowledgeable, and interesting history. A must-see for plane and northern history buffs

I had a great time here! There is something for everyone - the history of Yukon transportation woven in with local art, fascinating stories and outdoor displays.. A very warm & inviting atmosphere which a lot of museums lack! Over the summer there are plane rides available in an open cockpit biplane which I recommend!

Murray Lundberg

While the Transportation Museum (YTM) doesn't look very large, there's a lot to see, inside and outside around the property. The small gift shop has some really unique items. Watch for special events - they have some excellent transportation-related events throughout the year.

MATHIEU GUERY

(Translated) Very nice little museum. Well presented. Clean. Interesting and surprising. To have. (Original) Très beau petit musée. Bien présenté. Propre. Intéressant et surprenant. À voir.

Interesting range of transportation modes across Yukon, including modern dog sled racing. Nice to see the awards to recognize people who have contributed to Yukon transportation. Nice store front approach with each store featuring a different transportation more. Very cool model train display. Sadly, the trains were not operating on the day we visited. Look for the humour in the model train display. Small retail store by entrance. Admission fee. Check for combo admission package in partnership with the Beringia Interpretative Centre.

Dave Hardwick

If you like old planes, trains, and automobiles this is a nice little place to check out...my kids loved the model train set.

It's a great place to visit during a down day. If it's raining then give it a try. Be aware, it's only open on Saturday and Sunday during the winter. It's not huge and can take 30 minutes to see, but if you're into reading you could spend a few hours.

This is a really excellent museum. Lots of interesting exhibits, both inside the building and out and lots of wonderful old photographs. We really enjoyed talking with some of the museum volunteers...very interesting and very knowledgable.

What I like about this place is they have exhibit all kinds of vehicles from the past and turn it into a meauseam. Each vehicle tells it's tale.

Nicole Godfrey

There was a lot to see here. Worth a visit

Leslie James

A surprisingly enjoyable experience. I learned a lot about Yukon history here and finally know what the massive land train was for. I would recommend it to anyone who hasn't been here. But now I have a question, why are so many planes buried under the airport runway?

Alexia Oman

(Translated) Although disappointed for the whole museum, the outdoor facilities are not even explained. The only cool thing is the plane turns it into a museum ???? (Original) Bien déçue pour l'ensemble du musée, les installations à l'extérieur ne sont même pas expliquées. Le seul truc sympa c'est l'avion en fasse du musée ????

Jayme Hallstrom

Gail Arsenault

Very enjoyable. There were many displays and even a couple of places where children could climb on a buggy or in a cockpit.

Les Jones

If you are in Whitehorse anyway, it's worth a visit. It's right next to the airport so you can kill time and enjoy. Bring Canadian money.

Esther Kow

Lots of fun! Great history captured. Lots of old vehicles. $10 entry.

Biggest weathervane in the world. Interesting museum

Geoff Dyck

The is a wonderful museum. Truly a journey through time. The staff are incredible. There was one staffer named Janna who showed me around and was full of fascinating info on each piece in the museum. If you like all things motorized this is the place to be. I was like a kid in a candy store.

Janis Hoffman

Awesome displays here and a great source of history, worth your while to tour it!

Good place to visit in whitehorse. The Yukon Transportation Museum tells the story of transportation history in the Yukon which may be unknown to new generation. Historical Chilkoot trail alongside the intrepid stampeders as they forged their way by boat, foot and train to make it to the storied riches of Yukon’s Klondike gold fields. Tells the tales of the people that shaped the Alaska Highway, the road still essential to life in Canada’s famous Yukon.

A must do when you are in or passing through Whitehorse. So many artifacts giving you a glimpse back in time over the years of transportation in the Yukon. I would allow 2 hrs to tour the museum properly, but it can be done faster or slower if the need arises. Nicole from the museum made the visit with her knowledge of the artifacts and the history. We would recommend a visit to the museum if you can!

Mike M

This museum is really interesting. There is so much history and so many amazing people that have contributed toward the development of the Yukon and you can see how they did it and the machines they used. I liked the big road train outside, it must have been amazing to see it operating back in the day. The displays are well done and the machines are well restored, a credit to the museum. I would like to see it again one day. Souvenirs for sale there.

This is a great way to see the Yukon, a must see, come for the sights and stay for the history. We had a tour of the museum delivered with such Excitement it was so fun, Thanks to Nicole. The working model train was so cool. It travels through Whitehorse, Carcross and White Pass with awesome model planes in the sky over head. There were so many model planes, scrutinized for accuracy, plus the bonus of real ones as well. It was so cool to be immersed the amazing history of the Yukon.

Way better than expected! Great for kids and some great history.

A decent museum with exhibits Alaska's Transportation history. The inside exhibits were well kept and maintained. The museum was not super full but seems well-funded, judging from the two handicap lifts to move people to extremely small exhibit areas. The Highlight is the world's largest Weathervane, which consists of a former c-47 transport converted to a DC-3 and now used as a weather vane. It points with the wind so who needs a windsock at this Airport. Overall this museum is worth a visit if you're interested equipment Dream Machines of the era. A couple of the British World War two trucks were very unique as well as the restored Diamond REO truck. Outside they have the government huge wheeled cross country transport train shown in the image
