Laura Clingman

What a wonderful place to visit! So much to see! And a boat ride through the Soo Locks is well worth the time and money!

Taylor Pye

Fantastic canal! It was clean, smelled nice, and was fun to walk around. There's even boats that come up and go through the locks. It's like the Rideau, but way less busy. I recommend going around whitefish island too. Nice nature trails.

Ramneek Handa

Very nice. Make sure to rent a bike there.

Ciaran McIlwraith

What an incredible park! The canal operators are friendly.

kuang lu

it was really nice seeing the red brick houses built over a hundred years ago. however the air pollution from the nearby factory was insane

The park is a bit run down, but the locks are great!

Historical sites are in the process of being renovated. Park staff in mobile store is lovely, Despite the surrounding neighbourhood, it's still worth a drive to this site for a stroll around & walk some of the surrounding trails.

Chris Jordan

Nice brisk walk around the canal area will come back and tour the island trails too

Great place to stop by, cute little fishing spot as well.

bret spangenberg

Great spot to fish, but be aware, between the islands is a no fishing area.

Daniel Brosemer

Great short gravel trail for cycling or walking.

Pretty interesting to watch a ship go through. You'll know how a lock works when it's done. Nearby historical displays are worth it. But no food or shopping if that's your thing.

The water lock made the difference

Jagjinder Singh

It was really interesting to see the locks work and the history with it. Nice place for a good lakeside and nature walk; but be aware of animal's.

Mike Nik

Cool place to visit. Good fishing behind the locks near the bridge

Fwad Malik

Nice spot to visit in Sault. You can frequently see recreational boats going through and it's a great little 15-20 minutes experience especially for impatient kids to see. I highly recommend it for visitors. After seeing the locks in operation, it's worth taking a walk from here into the area where you can see the rapids, that's pretty nice to see as well. Overall lots to explore and learn here.

Robin Hillstrom

Nice hike White Fish Island

Autumn Mollet

Great place to watch the ships moving in the great lakes!! Loved watching all of them go through the locks. Nice double platform for viewing. We went every day of our trip and saw everything from a river cruise ship to a few 1000 footers go through!

Marc James

This is a great cultural experience with the surrounding historical building as well as the surrounding trials. The watching of the canal is interesting to watch as well `

Benjamin Groen

Visited via the Soo locks boat tour on the American side. Great up close experience with the locks. Several of the buildings have been restored here. The locks are free for any boat to use. Since the lock is small on the Canadian side it only accommodates pleasure craft.

Safri Financial

Enjoyed a lot. Though, last year we had crossed Panama Canal, this one was a unique experience too. Very sorry to see very few visitors on a Saturday evening on a long weekend. City should attract more visitors.

AnJie Havens

What a cool place to visit! It's great for families, with kids over 6-7 years old. This area has so much history to it. The cost is $31 in 2019, for a two+ hours tour. It takes you through the Soo Locks, as the actual 600'-1013' ships go through! Quite an experience

Vicky Gillespie

Was fun to see the Soo locks. Would be great if they had the museum open longer in the evening. I always enjoy going out there and then going over the walk bridge to White Fish Island. Unfortunately most of the trails have been washed away because of the high water levels we are having this year.

Robert Schmidt

Boat did not work very well! Would not go across the water.

Michael Marmur

Nobxbon

If you are local you know this area as “the locks” it’s a nice place to walk, explore or even have a picnic.

Bob Binnington

Easy lift to Superior. Would like it if we could tie up as we waited. Currents approaching are pretty strong to be idling in. Bikes thru parklands the day before ... outstanding ride!

Caleb Vander Ark

Really well done nature preserve. Trails were excellently maintained and had some good views. It's fun to cross the old locks as well. Note that during rainy or high water times some of the trails can be a bit damp if not completely submerged. Tip: great for a walk with your dog!

Steve Davis

Great tour. Very educational.

Angie Kostelyk

I love this park. The wildlife is so polite and friendly, probably because they're Canadian.

Rickie Meeuwsen

Loved the old buildings in the area. Cross the locks and explore the woodsy island. Nice display boards with interesting info about locks. On the way to the canal, you can sure tell that the water has a very strong current that you could never fight!

Keyur Patel

Good Place to see Locks working. Nothing much too see.

Nathan Perkins

Very cool attraction and trail.

Mo Cons

Beautiful place to go to on a summer's day, can bike, drive or walk there. Have lovely, scenic trails on whitefish Island, on the other side of the canal. Can walk across the canal bridge, and sometimes watch as they drain the canal to open the doors to let boats or kayakers through. They sometimes host events here too, which is nice in the summer. I highly recommend the trails on whitefish Island, they are easy, accessible, and great to see up close the rapids.

Sanje Ab

Visited there with the family. Check the boat schedule if u like to see the lift lock in action.

Ben Blissett

Beautiful! So neat being able to go under the bridge and see the border from the water.

Duncan Ritchie

Interesting. Good walking trails on island

Roma Skybin

Like to explore Nature's God Gifts

Coco Moulder

This is a beautiful piece of Michigan history that is not talked about during history classes or geography classes. Parents should take this trip to the U.P. just for a trip through the canals. We really enjoyed the tour and the information.

Elizabeth EAR

I love going for walks here! Great pictures. Great for wildlife watching. Great for picnics. Def go here nothing but fun times to be had.

Neo Cyberphile

One of the best getaways from the hustle and bustle of the Sault Ste. Marie’s city life. You can watch various recreational boats entering and leaving the canal locks - a historic Canadian engineering marvel - during the spring, summer, and fall. The locks will be closed during winter. You can also have a great nature stroll to Whitefish Island. I assure you that you won't be disappointed, and guaranteed to witness the sighting of birds, beavers, frogs and garter snakes, depending on the season. The only problem with the site is that Park staff occupying so many parking spots in the Visitor’s Parking lot.

Ashutosh Dutta

Good piece of basic but wonderful Engineering.

Bill's Bucket List

Took the 2 hour Soo Locks Tour. Beautiful area & narrator new her stuff + she was the ship's mate. Well worth the time & miney.

Liz Glodowski

So interesting watching barges! Can spend the whole day watching!

Lynn Smith

We took a boat trip through the Canadian Locks and the Soo Locks. Fantastic! It's a couple of hours and very informative. Hanging out by the locks gives one an opportunity to see the lake freighters up close.

Maher Jebara

Soooooo beautiful. Perfect place to discover and walk around. such a gem

Richard J Bergeron

Hi there. Well I made it. Left Delta BC on Sun. and am staying at Blueberry Hill rv campground about 20 miles from the "Soo ". I was born and raised here and left in my early 20 s back in the early 70 s. I'm here visiting family and friends for who knows.! I lived right in the Centre of downtown so all of these now historic sites were my friends and my playground. The locks were working back then with big lake freighters and small pleasure craft using it. We used to sneak across the lock gates and go on the little island there and walk through the bush that would take you right next to the Sault Rapids. This was the reason for the locks in the first place. They are pretty impressive in the spring with full water flow.! This all brings back lots of boyhood memories. There used to be a ferry right downtown that crossed to Sault Ste Marie , Michigan before the International Bridge was built. It was the only way to cross without driving all around Lake Superior . My buddy's dad worked on the ferry and sometimes he would let us ride back and forth a few times. Pretty fun stuff when your 11 or 12 years old. In the summer there were lineups for miles up the streets around my neighborhood. I was always amazed at all those "mericans " in their big , shiny , aluminum Airstream. And yes , as God is my witness , we used to get some of the tourists wondering where they could see some Eskimos and truly amazed that there was.no snow on the ground ! Me and my buddy's would just howl at these guys. That's why we used to talk them in the lineups. Hey , it was the middle of summer and we were goofing off. Anyway , I'd love to post some info and memories of other stuff if your interested. I have a good story about the mansion at the locks if it's still there. Oh Yeh , the locks are an awesome place to visit by the way. Used to be a fur trading post here back in the 1600 s. Want to know why all the old buildings on both sides of the river are built with that remarkable red sandstone ? Stay tuned . Later

Ninh Do

We did not take the tour, just took a walk around. No entrance fee, no parking fee. Nice area to walk, for kids to roam around and for adults to learn a bit of history, whether mechanical history or the history of the lock. Info on display was good and educational. There are some short urban trails that connect the lock and the Whitefish island, overlooking to US.

Carolyn LeCroy

We thoroughly enjoyed our Soo Salt Marie boat tour going into the locks on U.S. & Canadian side.

Jim Waycik

A major complex in the history of Canada. Located in the heart of Sault Ste Marie on the St. Mary's River offering many outdoor activities for all and a review of pre 1900 innovation and engineering of a major marine development partially responsible for uniting Canada.

Martin Roy

Great place to visit, can watch the boats go through the locks and enjoy a walk on whitefish island

Henry Lanouette

Very cool canal ride along the international border in a boat. The tours were great, showed us a steel plant on the Canadian side and the ships had bring them the supplies.

P H I L I P

Worth a stop! This place holds some interesting history, including a rare bridge that’s still in operation. Plenty of plaques & notable landmarks to behold.

Casey Lehman

We actually got to see a tour ferry go through! And, the islands are awesome as well!

Cerise Millington

Love having a bit of history so close to share with my girls. So happy to see some renovations happening to upgrade it. Definitely reccomend it for a nice walk and some time in nature with a bit of history too.

Christina Smith

What a cool place to watch boats and think about the building of these locks!

Erika D

Great walk along the waterfront. A ton of history for those history buffs, as I am one of them. We were fortunate to see the locks working as a sailboat went through. Bonus was crossing over the locks to Whitefish Island and seeing the St. Mary's rapids. Beautiful area.

Tonya Raisanen

Love to go hiking here

Nate Scheblo

This side of the lock system is great! Older, more historic, but it still functions and you can be up close and personal while it operates. Enjoyed exploring the lock site as well as the other islands. You can walk across the lock doors!! Would return, plus it's in Canada so it's awesome.

Sebastian Kluth

Sault-Sainte-Marie Canal National Historic Site is a nice place to walk around and take a few pictures of the river and the cities on both sides of the border. However, when I visited this place, there were a lot of dead fish in the river and there was feces from Canada geese everywhere. This place should be kept cleaner than it is.

David Harker

Tremendous historical significance and natural beauty

Dolce Vita!

It was okay, took boat ride through canals...the ultimate view was an industrial site on the Canadian side of water. The Locks were neat, but the area didnt look so nice.

Jane Van Horn

Very educational and so beautiful. You'll learn a lot about the locks and shipping in the Great Lakes.

Peaceful, informative and rejuvenating. Beautiful place. Highly recommended!

This was a nice place to visit even during the winter period. Of course it would of been amazing in summer but nature has its beauty in green or white. Was a very relaxing experience and I will be going back in the warmer periods.

Saundra Kiczenski

Nice place to walk around and take pictures. Also you will learn how the Locks work.

Andrew MacDonald

Beautiful paths, great for summer walks and picnics

Margot Pickering

Amazing place... the wetlands and the wildlife are beautiful.

Chris McCullough

A beautiful landmark of Sault Ste. Marie and a piece of Canadiana. There is a nice little museum operated by parka Canada. The canal will let you cross over to Whitefish Island which is absolutely beautiful. Bring some bird feed or bread to feed the chickadees. They will eat out of your hand!!!

Zsófia Halmai

It was a nice place to visit, but I feel like I spent too much of my time there. Going around the trail is only advised for bird lovers. It worth to check out the canal, it's really interesting to see how they open the gates for a boat. If you go there around 7 pm, you can catch the train bridge turn around.

Daphne Arlotto

Nice little track to take a walk in the city, surrounded by nature. A variety of birds live here.

Don Dillaman

Two hour tour through the US and Canadian locks. Very informative, however I could have done without political commentary at the beginning.

Mud Slingr

Interesting to see how the locks work. Not something you see everywhere. Worth the stop to visit.

susan manderson

Great place to visit

David Robinson

Great place for a walk. People catching salmon when we were there.

Well worth it. Know in advance when and where you're launching. Gentle cruise, don't worry about motion sickness unless you're HIGHLY susceptible. Do bring a camera.

Jessica Williams

Great place t walk around. Many trails and a lot of history to learn and read about. Historic buildings, gift shop and visitor center with free parking. Fun to watch to watch the vessels go through.

Joe B

Beautiful place to visit and close to some nice walking trails.

Sev Nampi

Small marina, there wasn't much going on thou.

Rob Cummings

What a cool place! I really like the Canadian side of the locks better than the American. They're much smaller. We took a boat tour through the locks that takes you up the American side and back down through the Canadian side. There were people waving at us from the side of the locks that were visiting from the Canadian side. Pretty cool!

W. Andrew Powell

If you can make it when there's a boat going through the lock this is a great experience and beautiful grounds.

Angie Smeltzer

Great place to watch the lock and dam up close!

Joe E

We went on a tour through the locks and everything was beautiful.

paul carn

Nice trail. Enjoy the wild life

Kathie Ditton

Just so cool to see how it works. Doesn't take long at all to get a boat through!

Jamie Montie

The ride would be better if they had passengers stay seated on top deck so all can see. That was annoying but the Soo locks were cool.

josh bergamin

White fish island is one of our family's favourite place to visit the wild live comes alive. Its awesome to see the the beavers and oetter, snakes and more. All come together too make it amazing place too go visit.

Great to see Gov't project that historically generated its own power making it "off-grid" in 1896! Need more sustainable projects like that today!

Andrew Overman

Beautiful site and lovely nature paths and boardwalk with scenic views of St. Mary's river rapids

Alana Samsonoff

Spent about and hour and a half here. Was able to see a few boats go through the locks in both directions. There are also walking/biking trails on Whitefish Island adjacent to the locks so I spent some time enjoying those as well.

A wonderful experience and historical information about the locks.

Beautifully maintained.

Angela Hughes

Gorgeous views of the locks, the river, the lake, ore boats, the bridges, the old Edison Power Plant, the museum ship SS Valley Camp...history at every turn. This is one of those places you want to just "be" in. Bucket list check-off. Something to tell your grandkids about. :-)

Chad Orton

It was a very interesting, with the history and how they let the water in, before you can travel out.

Chris Hibbard

Nice tour, knowledgeable and friendly guide, *even to Americans*

Ric Carter

Great trails and scenery and fun to watch the lock fill up. Good view of the US across the river Lots of bridges Go Greyhounds

gino simiele

We enjoyed a 2 hour tour of the locks from the soo locks boat company in mid August. Fortunately it was a perfect weather day. The staff was very friendly. There are drinks and basic snacks available for cash. Recommend getting in line as soon as possible to get a seat in the front of the upper deck viewing area. You are able to walk around on the boat during passage. Masks are required to be worn.

Hugo Hackenbush

It is free to visit, right in downtown, and tons of free parking. There are lots of trails to walk on. There are 20 signs or so explaining the history & development of the site. It is however showing it's age and some neglect. But they're also restoring historic buildings, clean bathrooms open 12 hours a day, and it's free to visit. I spent about 45 minutes walking the trails and 45 minutes looking at the locks.

Judith Gamus

Beautiful place. We saw a lot of active beavers in the islands

Jordan Gilmore

Went and got some ice cream and walked across the road it was very clean and tidy very nice people working there lots of good information would recommend going here before walking up to the locks traffic wasn't too bad parking was pretty packed for the area my brother who is in the military Park in the VFW parking lot we appreciated them allowing us to do so without

This is such a beautiful place to visit. So many trails to wander around whitefish island that belongs to the Batchewana First Nations. Park is clean well maintained. Enjoy walking here a lot.

Gustavo Urtubey

Today May 4, 2019. All washrooms were closed and there are no washrooms around at least you go to the mall. Shame Parks Canada ! The Park has no maintenance at all. Canada is becoming a third world country. The area is very nice for a walk.

Ken Wilkins

We took the Soo Lock boat tour through the larger American lock up to Lake Superior and down the smaller Canadian lock to return on the Saint Marys River. We saw the power canal that by-passed the locks through the powerplant that generates electricity for the Sault Saint Marie Michigan city. We drove across the bridge to Sault Saint Marie Canada and had lunch. We then returned to Michigan and headed west to continue our trip.

David Hughes

Awesome place to spend a day!

A great place for history and nature. We visited during much construction, so many buildings were closed. The visitor's center was in a small trailer. The staff was warm and generous with their time. This was once the largest of the Soo locks, but has been replaced by the locks on the American side. A smaller "recreational" lock has been built inside the older 1895 lock, so you still get the see boats pass through (this is part of the Soo Locks Boat Tour), but to see the big ships, you need to go to the American side. However, unlike the American locks, you get to walk all around this lock and over the gates to the other side. There is little security, nor any reason for it. There are trails that lead over to the rapids on the river and board walks that allow you to get right up close. This is a popular running and walking spot for the locals.

William Carriere

Pretty simple to find. Very helpful and friendly staff. Engaging Explorer activity book kept the kids active over 2 hours. Lots of history. Currently in the midst of renovations but still oodles of charm.

Eva Badgero

Good place to walk the dog

I love walking here. It's a great place to bring the family or a date. I would recommend it for any occasion. Not the most inviting place after dark.

Rob B

Great spot for a quiet walk. Cross over one of the canal gates and explore Whitefish Island via the trails.

Brent Sandberg

Very nice, clean park for a hike and views.

Waruna C

A National historic site, a very exciting place for kids to see how a lock system works. You can walk across a lock to the other side and explore hiking trails that cover natural water ways. Some areas were partly covered by water even on a dry day. We managed to keep our feet dry by skipping over few rocks. Depending on water levels, the entire loop may not be possible. The shorter route making a left after entering the trails will get you to the closest observation deck, and the path was pretty dry.

Rose Holibaugh

My family and friends enjoyed the historical information given as well as the relevant use information as we were on the boat. During the cruise we saw first hand how the locks operate as the water raised then released our boat out the other side. After a short cruise we returned to the locks and were lowered. Beautiful scenery on the Canadian side as well as the USA side.

Awesome place to visit in Sault Ste Marie!!

Dylan Forester-Timmons

I mean...the Canada side is epicly cool. The U.S. side's most appealing attraction is a park with more security than fort knox. There's a 7 foot fence the whole way round it with a secondary fence, cameras the whole way. At the one entrance to the park theres cameras and signs stating That you can be subject to search by entering, leaving or at any time in the park.... Like what....we that worried that our allied Canadians are gonna swim across a busy canal at the lock where huge ships are crossing and theres enough security to combat a small insurgency? Lets get real folks....

Sam deZ

There are many different pictures all around the grounds that are very interesting . They explain how the bridge works ..when it was all built and how the large boats make it through . The scenery is amazing . Trails to walk through and lots of seats throughout the park to just sit and relax and take in the beauty of it all . Definitely a place for tourists young and old to visit and learn the history of the canal
