It's too bad that we got here too late to go in the Visitor's Centre and educate ourselves about the lift lock as well as seeing the lift lock in action. We just admired from afar haha. We took the stairs to the top of the lift lock and found a helpful signboard explaining how the lift lock works as well as several interesting facts. I'd like to see the lift lock in action one day.

One of the greatest waterways structures, that was the # one in the world for years. It works using water and gravity , the best practical example of the Lift Lock is a Seasaw ! You can find many good videos online about how a lift lock works, but remember do not mix the lift lock with Lock !!!!! The Peterborough Lift Lock , has a great picnic area around the lift lock, very good visitor centre with great services, also there is a two hours cruise that passes through the lift lock. If you like engineering structures, do not miss this !!!!!

Very cool piece of architecture. One of eight lift locks in the world. This one states that it is the tallest. Don't just walk around at the bottom. Be sure to explore all the stairs and go up to the top. It's totally worth it. There are historic signs posted that help you appreciate it for what it is. Definitely a must stop place.

Tony Kwan

Was nice. Just walked around and saw several families set up a small BBQ picnic. Would go again if in the neighborhood.

This was a stop along our bike tour. There are free parking spaces on the road near the locks but it costs to use the ones at the centre.. Public bathrooms were clean and nice. The locks are an amazing feat of human ingenuity and very worth seeing There are paid boat tours available but we didn't do that with our bikes. Instead, we biked the paved trails, starting from here, to Trent University. It was a great trip of about 20K all together with a stop near the end for lunch and drinks at the Ale House which was awesome.

This was a surprising treat when I visited Peterborough. You don't really hear about it as a tourist but it's a wonderful feat of engineering of the time. The fact it's still functional is a testament that they built things to last. Definitely check it out.

Watching the entire lock lift itself is pretty impressive and if you like engineering, mechanics or just seeing how things work I'd say that this a good idea for fathers day. An even better idea is to leave the wife and kids at home they'd only get bored and spoil it for you with all the noise and smells.

The people were helpful and there was a small exhibit to explain how the locks work. When the locks were about to go up and down an alarm would sound so you could be ready to take photos.

Small but informative centre. There is a mini movie hall where the staff will play a short video that briefly explains the history of the Trent-Severn waterway - how it was conceived and how it was progressively constructed until completion. You can also learn about how the Peterborough Lift Lock (aka Lock 21 which is one the highest, if not the highest, lift locks in the world) functions. Its massive 2.0m diameter water pistons are pretty impressive. After that, you can take a quick stroll out to the see the lift lock in the flesh. You can climb two flights of stairs up to the upper level if you like. I managed to observe the lift lock in action. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes for the entire procedure.

Jody Mitchell

An old-timey engineering marvel!

Christina Brinklow

Really interesting and well maintained place! Parks Canada has a building beside the lift locks, full of historical information. There is a little movie theater, a museum, and staff available for any questions you might have. There is also a washroom! Surrounded by well maintained public areas, it's a nice place for a picnic... at the very least. If you're lucky, you'll get to see the locks in action as boats traveling up and down the river use the locks...as they were when they were first engineered and built! Apparently there are only 8 of these locks in the world! Kids and adults alike will learn and enjoy visiting here! There is also a gift shop.
