REVIEWS OF York Redoubt National Historic Site IN Nova Scotia

Darren Carr

What a great historical place to go for a walk in the summer

Scott Dixon

Amazing historical site!

S Norman

Really beautiful spot with lots of well maintained trails. Plenty of spots to photograph. A beautiful B&B near by Close to the ocean. Lots of endangered lady slipper flowers, glacial rocks, and little rivers.

Scott Gaddes

Great place to go for a walk. There is a fair bit to check out, cannons, fortifications. Take the trail down to the water, there are some old fortifications down there (graffitied) but still nice, nice views of the water.

Kyle “902Lancer” Fenner

Nice place for a walk. Offers much more if you feel adventurous.

Natalie Cantle

This place is so cool. It’s honestly now one of my favourite places to walk around In Halifax. Very cool to see all the old war architecture but also a great place if you just want to go for a hike as there are several trails ! And you can go right down by the water. Usually not very many people there so can hang out by yourself and it’s pretty quiet. 10/10 recommend

joanna latter

Awsome place haven't been there in years went there last week twice going to go again love it

james kelly

Beautiful park with a nice walking trail and views. Dog friendly. Lots of signs to read about the history of the fort. Has public bathrooms on site. Lots of parking. Picnic tables through out the park aswell.

Glenn Swan

Very cool place. I’ve lived in Halifax for 10+ years and never knew that it existed. So much history. Good parking. Easy to get into. Careful with the kids as there are some steep drops.

Erica Spinney

Had a great afternoon exploring, off the beaten path, with my love ❤

Tina Boutilier

Was a great day finding places to explore

John van Gurp

Love this site for its out-of-the-way location. Very unfortunately the most interesting part of the park is actually fenced off. However, many people have found a way around the fence to explore the ruins there.

Krista Whitehouse

Love this old fort. The park has been maintained really well, and the hiking trails are very extensive with beautiful views along the harbor looking toward McNabs Island. Spectacular views. There are a few geocaches in here to find if you are so inclined, and it is a great place for people to walk their dogs. You can see remnants of old structures that used to exist and see how this place was once used to keep a vigilant eye on any ships entering the Halifax harbour.

Anna H

Such a cool place! Definitely recommend!

Mike Foley

The graffiti on the structures at the water's edge of the Sleepy Cove battery is beautiful. I am torn about the graffiti as it is vandalism of a historic site but it brings so much more to enjoy while at the York Redoubt complex. There are 3 search light batteries 2 concrete lookout towers and 2 gun emplacements overlooking the Halifax Harbour. You can see Mcnab's Island and the lighthouse. The views are spectacular. Definitely worth checking out York Redoubt National Historic Site.

Jason Belliveau

Its nice they finally opened up the lower sections. Last time i was there they were not open.

Jason Quinn

Very beautiful park with much better views than point pleasant and is typically far less busy. Have been there many times. It's quite large and has a nice trail right to the water as well as trails high on hill with great views.

Kenny Mahar

Great walk. And a good history lesson. And also so talented graffiti artists.

Dawna McGladrie

Was a great visit. Snow on the ground but +5 degrees. Learned things I didnt know. Lots of people out enjoying the day. All doggies seemed to have a wonderful time also. Very happy to see that.

Antwon Christian

A very nice walk. Better on a non wet day. Unless you like mud.

Remo Williams

Best place for a picnic. One of the best views in the entire city!

Joshua Wong

Love this historical place. The open space, the views of the harbour, and the history told and marked by signs throughout the site makes it a perfect COVID outing for a quick stroll.

muffin

Spectacular views of the ocean if you take the trail around the site. The site itself is okay, might be more interesting if you are a history buff. Idk what's up with the graffitis they are everywhere.

Michelle E

York Redoubt is one of my favourite fortified parks to trip around in HRM. There are a lot of buildings still in great condition and a lot of history to learn and see.

Gray River Tarot & Healing

Very nice place to walk a dog, hangout on the rocks by the shore, walk through a gravel path to the water under the caponopy of oak trees, view from the top of the fort of lighthouse and ocean, great for pick nicks. This is definitely a local favorite!

Philip M Howard

They demolished some of the dangerous parts of the shoreside battery and reopened it... graffiti artists moved in to create some great art!

Zac Eisan

This place has the most beautiful views in Halifax! I went there for the first time and spent 2 hours exploring the place, so interesting and so much history.

Mark Sherman

Lovely place with great views of Halifax harbor. Some of the battlements are full of graffiti which won’t be to everyone’s taste. Well worth a visit

Cristi Yorke

Bitterly cold day for a walk but the Redoubt was sheltered and very clean! Beautiful views.

Catlady kimm

Really nice paths, And we found a super cool/creepy tunnel. Looking forward to going back.

Peter Fevens

Nice view of the entrance to Halifax harbor. Parking inside the fort entrance. Sign on the road is lacking.

Vikram Singh

A good historic site, could have been better maintained. Short hike to the water was nice.

Shawn Langille

There are large restored guns which fired 256lb shells, interpretive signage, some remnants of buildings and fortifications. Mainly people seemed to be using it as a dog park.

Katie Enman

Great walking trail and green space for kids and dogs. Lots of tunnels to explore and leads down to close to the water with a nice view of the ocean. The water isn't really accessible so if you do plan to go down, use caution down the steep hills and rocks.

Steven Targonski

Nice place with really cool history, I actually liked some of the graffiti. But its really overgrown and run down. It is what it is.

Kelly Mercer

I like to take the family there to walk through the trails.

Jack Luke

Great park! Nice area to have a picnic, take photos and has lots of scenic views. Reason why I am rating it 4 stars and not 5 is because the amount of litter there was in the lower end of the park. Parks Canada should do a better job of having recycling bins around York Redoubt.

Josh Elliott

Very interesting historical park, with a decent walk and a reasonable amount of parking. Well maintained and fun for the size, good way to see the military side of Halifax without having to dive into the downtown core.

Villagemayor

There is a bus stop but not sure how frequent it comes, so driving might be recommended especially off-season. Lots of interesting buildings and cannons to see. Also plenty of interpretive plaques for a self guided tour.

Jason Wareham

It's a great spot to check out a piece of Canadian history that is completely free. The scenic views of the harbour are spectacular and it's a great spot for a picnic or leisurely walk. I have a 4 year old and two 2 year olds and they all love coming here everytime we go. Great to explore on your own or with family.

Rajesh Barua (Emon)

We loved the historic preservation... Nice place to look around...

Alain Girard

Great place to walk and explore, so much to see with amazing views of the Northwest Arm. Got to experience York Redoubt from the water by Kayak this summer, gives you an entirely different view of the place. One of my favorite places to photograph in the HRM area

Muhammad Taimoor Qureshi

Beautiful place to visit and have a nice time

Oneblueone Brown

Nice place for a walk. I am glad to see see many people using this beautiful park now. If you come please take your garage. Lately I am finding and picking up so much garage. Tim, starbucks cup, kids snacks /toys. It was never like this in years past. Pick up after your dog and don't leave the poop bag unless you are coming back for it. Pack in pack out. Please respect the animals who live here and don't litter in there home. Thanks and enjoy the trails.

Jolly Roger

A historic redoubt sitting on the bluff fending the entrance of Halifax harbour. It’s an easy walk around and the lighthouse on McNabs island is right in front. Well-maintained and well-preserved for people to remember the history.

BohoBabe

Another great place for a picnic. There are paths leading everywhere.

elizabeth prevost

A new find in Nova Scotia. Interesting and beautiful spot. We plan to go back once we can travel around the province.

Fiona Wilson

Beautiful views lovely walks. Quiet

Elizabeth Barrett

Great place for kids to run and play and use their energy! Learn some history too!

Peggy Matheson

Excellent history. If you get the opportunity to do so take a leisure walk on the back crushed rock trails. The sisters are breathtaking. Be sure to carry bottles of water with you.

James Vaughan

Beautiful view of the ocean and a great hike! Must see for sure. A lot of history.

BL Smith

A nice outdoor space within HRM. Limited parking the day we were there. A nice smooth gravel path for walking with some lovely views. Wide open space in the ruins of the old fort. Not too interesting as a historical site but a nice change of scenery.

smittyleafs

I've always enjoyed this national historic site. Explore the fort and take in the views, or walk down to the water and explore the remnants down there. Feels a bit like a mix of the Citadel and Point Pleasant, but much less busy.

narendran kumar

Lovely place . Do visit with family and friends . Wonderful view of the coast . Well maintained and is one of the historical places in Halifax. Never used Canons make you to admire.

jaclyn rivers

Beautiful location. Accessible for those in power chairs. The paths are lined with gravel, so some of it would Be difficult in a manual wheelchair. Great views of the city and the ocean! Can get pretty windy- a great place to fly kites. Bring a jacket!

May Zhagro

Close to the city and lots to explore at York Redoubt. There is parking right at the entrance and sometimes they allow parking within the walls as well. There are abandoned and spray painted buildings, different sized cannons, and a hiking trail. The higher areas overlook the waters and you can sometimes see boats and along the waters. Lots of history and stories behind this historic site. Only open during certain times of the year (June to Labour Day).

H A

Beautiful park, and kids will enjoy walking and running.

Courtney Rhynold

I had never heard about York Redoubt until a friend took me there. WOW, what an amazing place. So much history plus the scenery is beautiful, especially in the fall with all the leaves on the ground. I'll definitely be back. Worth your time.

Rob Furlough

Awesome place to explore. So much to see!

R Redden

Cool place to visit, but I was surprised at the state of some of the tunnels etc. Very muddy/slipper on stairs and had litter etc. Would have expected it to be a bit more taken care of . Other than that a very neat place to explore.
