(Translated) Nahanni National Park in Canada's Northwest Territories, about 500 kilometers west of Yellowknife, protects part of the Mackenzie Mountains wilderness. It has an area of 4766 km², and was created in 1976. In 1978 it was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. The park is crossed in its entire length by the South Nahanni River, which runs dotted with four large canyons. In the central area of the park is the largest waterfall in North America, the Virginia Falls; on a front of 200 meters, the river plunges from a height of 92 meters, twice that of Niagara Falls. In the center of the waterfall there is a glacial rock, called Mason's Rock in honor of Bill Mason, a famous Canadian canoeist, writer and filmmaker. There is a proposal to rename the falls after Pierre Trudeau, former Prime Minister of Canada. The natural environment of the park is made up of fir and poplar forests, alpine tundra, mountain ranges, sulfurous hot springs and a karst cave system, and is home to numerous species of fish, birds and mammals. There is a visitor center in Fort Simpson, the nearest town, where the geography, culture and history of the region are explained. The only practical means of getting to the park are by seaplane and helicopter. Superficie: 30.050 km²

(Translated) Nahanni National Park is located in the northwest of Canada near the Yukon. The Nahanni River is one of the most spectacular rivers in North America. Nahani National Park is located in the South Nahani River Basin. Only 1,000 tourists dabble every year to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Half of them came rowing along the South Nahanni River. Nahanni National Park is also one of the 18 World Heritage Sites in Canada. We recently went on a 14 day trip down the Nahanni River with Nahanni Wilderness Adventures (NWA). The group of 6 people and 2 guides was in canoes and a raft. These trips are expensive so chose the tour company wisely. Nahanni Wilderness Adventures is a family run company which employs family members as trip leaders despite the fact that they are not the best people available. This was the situation in our case and the leader hadn't been on the river for three years so was not familiar with the current conditions nor was he able to adjust as he relied on passé knowledge which resulted in us camping at sites which were marginal given the changes that had occurred over three years since he has last been there. Our trip leader was a têtu who ignored both group requests and well-founded advice from very experienced outdoorsmen. He viewed the participants not as mature adults rather as recruits to be dictated to. At Virginia Falls, he refused to allow us to make the hike up Sunblood and so we sat around the camp for a day. The tour company decided to lump a raft together with canoes so we in the canoes were always waiting for the raft to catch up. As a result the people in the canoes got cold waiting around and we got into campsites late when the sun had disappeared behind the hills so it was not possible to dry out the tents or clothing. On the lower part of the Nahanni, we were forced to lash up a catacanoe which takes away from the experience for capable canoeists. The owner of the NWA tour company is a difficult person to deal with and this should be born in mind. What he said before the trip and what actually happens once on the river proved to be very different. In fact, one couple was told that their trip would be cancelled even after payment had been accepted. The following are my recommendations should you decide to make a trip down the Nahanni River: 1. Do not go on a trip that mixes rafts and canoes. 2. If you are a canoeist capable of handling class 2/3 rapids then ensure that you be able to be in the stern for at least some of the rapids. 3. If you are a canoeist capable of handling class 2/3 rapids then ensure that you'll not be forced to be part of a catacanoe. 4. Ensure that you'll be able to do activities such as hiking Sunblood. 5. There are three companies licensed to provide trips in the Nahanni NP, so check out each one before selecting one. How the company selects their trip leaders and guides is critical – those using nepotism should be treated with caution. 6. Consider the time of the season since water levels change, bug density varies and better northern light displays occur towards the end of the season.

(Translated) This magnificent park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978, one of the first to achieve it. There you can find wild rivers with huge waterfalls, deep canyons, an ecosystem of limestone caves and miles of trails and paths to discover. Gray ???? and black bears or elk are also common along with dozens of wildlife species. The best way to get there is by plane.

Nahanni National Park Reserve is one of the most beautiful parks in Canada. An incredible experience for anyone. Experienced paddlers and hikers can take self guided trips through the many rivers and trails. For anyone with less than expert experience- it's highly recommended to take a trip with an adventure company (not only for your safety, but to get the fullest experience).

Undescribable and Amazing. Untouched by humans. An incredible place to explore and to see awesome wildlife and spectacular views. The park's sulphur hot springs, alpine tundra, mountain ranges, and forests of spruce and aspen are home to many species of birds, fish and mammals. Mammal species found in the park are black bear, timber wolf, Arctic ground squirrel, beaver, river otter and red fox.
