Interesting perspective of the Canadian side of the war of 1812. You can see Fort Niagara in the distance.
It's like going back in time. Great place to take in the history of Fort George and the battles that took there. Highly recommend it to all families and history buffs!
Wonderful restoration of an old fort. I was there on a Saturday and the living history displays were fantastic. 15 red coats doing drills in the common. Tours of the block house and barracks. Description of camp life / the lives of wives in the fort. Beautiful grounds.
We were a party of 5. It was very informative. Way more than what we expected. All of the staff were extremely friendly and knew their stuff. Will definitely go again!
Very informative tours and loved speaking with the interpreters, could've spent much more time there
The Historic Fort George is a must see if you are heading to Niagara. Entry is very cheap and you get to experience a rich part of Canada's history. You can visit different buildings of the fort and interact with staff who educate you on the history of the not just the War of 1812, but the individuals both military and civilian who were affected. It is undergoing renovations and due to Covid-19 there are some things you won't have access to. I was able to show up in time for the weapons demonstration and an oral history of the fort and its relevance during the war. It is very family friendly. They have also done their part to include the significance and importance of First Nations people to the war of 1812, but also how they were failed after the war by both the U.S. and Canadian governments. There was mention of Black soldiers but it would have nice for more detail i.e name and more specifics (for example there is a burial ground for (black soldiers less than 5 minutes away) which would be a good tie in historically. There is also a giftshop on site.
If you enjoy historical sites, this place is pristine! One of the best reconstructions I have seen. I've been to several US Civil War battlefields and have seen some very impressive reconstructions over the years. But Fort George is definitely one of the best reconstructions I have seen.
A nice little self guided historical site. There’s not a huge amount to see here, but everyone is friendly and happy to answer all your questions. The price to enter is very reasonable. You can see everything within about 45 minutes. Though this can be extended by watching some of the shows (they occur multiple times a day). (I enjoyed the musket show the most.) ————————— For more food and travel, follow me on Instagram @yamisohungry
Just to the right is one of the forts on the American Side. On a hot day some have even taken to swimming in the water. Others were taking Kyaking lessons. There is a path where you can walk along. Few picnic tables, and the lawn well kept to sit on the grass.
During the summer months the site is alive with people dressed and reenactments of the time during the War of 1812. Each of the buildings are well-documented and young students in the area are hired to play the part of soldiers and townspeople on site. They are knowledgeable of the history of the fort. There is ample parking for vehicles and the price of admission is reasonable. I recommend that you check out the entire fort.
Beautiful, historic, gorgeous Niahata On The Lake. Say no more. It's a gem! Please dont visit, it's too nice to be ruined by masses!
A great fort to visit and learn about the war of 1812. Definitely, something to learn for all ages.
Very impressed with everything. From parking to presentation and the way this historical site is preserved. It's like going back in time.
It is not too expensive to visit, the fort is well maintained. The demonstrations and history were well worth the admission.
Fort George National Historic Site of Canada is a largely recreated 18th-century military fort located on the west bank of the Niagara River near the river's mouth. It is situated on the remains of the original Fort George, largely destroyed during the War of 1812
Absolutely unacceptable parking situation. We paid to get in and see Fort George and found out as we left we got a parking ticket. We did see the parking signs after we looked hard for them but they were nowhere near where we parked our vehicle therefore we did not see them upon arrival.
Friendly employees go out of their way to share what they know about the 1812 war era fort. Demonstrations throughout the campus, such as cooking or cartography. There is a ballistics demonstration every so often there. Good for visitors of all ages, and a convenient first stop after crossing the border.
I would highly recommend it. It's not just info you can read and see artifacts. There are many live demonstration all the time I have been there. The staffs know things very well and tell lots of good stories. They are passionate and nice people.
Very big area to explore with the kids .and fire readily available along the river
Musket and Fife/Drum presentations were very good. Not a place you could spend a long time, but good for what it is.
Thought we also had to pay for parking coming to see the fort its $6-9 so not bad but save money!!! if you go into the hut where they sell the tickets the can give you a pass for parking! Awesome place and amazing history!
One the most beautiful town, I have been in Canada. Beautiful homes, which gives you a feel of being with nature, as well as modern city. A lake gives a feel of tranquility , peace, and connects you more with this nature. A place where you can do BBQ, Enjoy roadside trip, and the traditional wine & brewery. Must visit place. Plan it in morning, and then spend your afternoon at Niagara Falls . Enjoy :)
A fun place to learn Hands-On history. The tour guides are excellent and have a great enthusiasm for inciting discovery.
I would not want to have been on the loosing side of that canon embarkment. Lots to see, very large, good for a walk, the whole town is worth walking.
Great tour and history lesson. Staff are always in character and willing to answer any question.
EXCELLENT Remake of a Classic British/French wooden fort of the period. We walked around the whole area and enjoyed the atmosphere and history. Also really interesting to see how this fort and the American front over the river had many conflicts over there active time and even exchanged ownership once or twice. Great to bring children and they do a discount rate for families. Watch out for the parking however, it $5 for no really reason.
A fort that was invaded during the war of 1812. Not a big fort, I would say it's small enough to finish in about an hour. Costs about $12 for a ticket to enter. Has several exhibits of the barracks and quarters of the soldiers that would have fought and stood guard during that time. There's a musket firing demonstration at certain times and a talk about medicine during that time. Overall, it was a good dose of history for a summer afternoon, not too overwhelming. A good place to visit if you're in the Niagara on the lake area.
Great place to visit!
We went on Sunday to find out that the actual fort was closed. We only got to see if from the outside. A little disappointed but I guess that's covid! Still really beautiful to walk around the outside though.
Great location for some history. Living history impressions all over the fort. You can climb all over the cannon in the bastions. Kids (mine are 6 and 4) have their own "adventure" type book to explore the fort. Great experience.
Even during Covid lots to see and do. The musket demonstration was fantastic. The staff was all super friendly, extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer any questions you had about history. Even my young children enjoyed the trip.
Luckily we got in free due to a country wide national park celebration, else we honestly probably wouldn't have paid for it. The battlements are pretty cool and are definitely more interesting than reading solely about the family buildings. BUT more than anything, stay to watch the Musket Firing demonstration! Our re-enactor was both hilarious and skilled and made the entire visit worth while.
It's a restored site. The guides are all nice and explain well about different rooms and their application. It's 11$/person the entrance.
Visited on Canada Day 2018. Paid for parking but admission was free. Interesting history to be found here. Great to see the old artillery pieces and field gun. Bet they could still be fired with a bit of clean up and the right powder and cannon ball.
Enjoyed visiting Fort George, it was an interesting afternoon. Very informative the people who work/volunteer there are friendly and informative. Lots to learn here.
Interesting historical reconstruction of the military fort and it inhabitants. Demonstration of the preparation to firing, and musket firing, soldiers and officers uniform, all everyday duties of british solders and their wives. It's sad that building were closed in reason of COVID-19. The historical staff work hard - tell a lot of stories and do a lot of demonstrations. They are never tired to respond on all questions in details and friendly and kind. We are really enjoyed, I recommend.
I end up here with my sis and mom for the Canada day weekend and it has been amazing, fireworks omg amazing! Best I have seen in Canada ????????????
A must see in Niagara! Amazing historical site significant to the War of 1812 with countless Eng/Fr costumed interpreters and interactive experiences. Many special events so check their website for the schedule! Parking is $6 flat rate. Bathrooms on site are wheelchair accessible and include a single anyone washroom with change table. The gift shops has lots of treasures also!
This fort is set in the era of the war of 1812. The British fort was made of wood and was easily burnt to the ground by the America's. The American stone fort can be seen while standing on the bastion. They have an excellent musket demonstration.
Our family had a wonderful time here. Fun and educational. The musket firing demonstration was very fun to watch and learn. All staff are amazing, knowledgeable and show a genuine interest in their roles. We are truly impressed.
Learning about the war of 1812 all through school out west and actually seeing the site and learning about it more in person was amazing. Welcoming staff and lots of information and things to see. Even though it is the off season and there was no reenactments I recommend going to see the fort.
National historic site. Battle fort to fight the Americans. Lost and regain it again back over 100 - 200 years ago.
Great historic site to visit. Lots of interesting things for the kids to see as well as do; demonstrations in nearly every building and excellent view of the river and across to the US and their fort. Definitely a worthwhile stop on the Niagara tour. #canada150
Wow. You can't have this experience anywhere else. Walking into the past over 200 years ago. The people there that keep it together as in the actors there are truly amazing. You feel like your back in the 1800's right away. So much to learn and see there. 100% a must do for anyone coming to Niagara on the lake.
Knowledgeable, friendly staff and excellent demos. Takes about 2 hours to do. A great insight into daily life during the was of 1812. Best historical site in Niagara so far
Start your walk or bike ride along the Niagara River here. The history of this fort is amazing. So many great stories of heroism that helped create this wonderful country of ours!
Great fort interesting information lots of wide open spaces....loved the drums ND musket demo.
Very interesting site. Staff extremely nice and informative. Spent lots of time explaining what life was like. Could have spent several hours here. A bit more historical markers and background would be helpful.
Visit on Friday 4th May, 2018. Great time of year to visit to avoid tourist crowds during the summer and before schools begin year-end field trips. Staff are excellent.
We had a great time. The demonstrations and actors really make this place come to life.
Nice experience walking through the sites and reading about the battles that went on here. Staff are friendly and dressed up in costume so it was a cool throwback to the times. Bikes aren't allowed past the fort gates so make sure they're locked up near the road entrance area.
Had such a cool experience at Fort George! Watched the musket demonstration and then got caught in an all out rain storm. The kitchen even cooked up some scratch cookies over the fire for us as we waited out the storm. Staff were extremely knowledgeable!
A great part of our Canadian history. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable about what took place during the time Fort George was active.
One of the greatest historic sites I have ever visited. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and polite. This isn’t your regular museum type of site, they specialize in historical animation, which really brings the site to life. In the summer months they have a group of about 15 students who portray the infantry of the Fort providing muskets demonstrations as well the historical drill and tactics. There are also another 5-10 costumed interpreters stationed around the site that will inform you about the daily life inside the Fort. The Fort also has a working officers kitchen which bakes fresh goodies for guest to try (outside of Covid times). With several activities to partake in for both children and adult, and with children under 12 getting free admission, I highly recommend spending and afternoon here.
It was interesting to see some history. We were shown a musket firing display. Plus they described all about the differences between muskets of the soldiers and rifles of the common folk/hunters.
Beautiful place, great people, don't miss a visit to the kitchen!
Cool place. Lots to see
A nice historical museum that makes you closer to that period of time ( 17-18 century )
Great historical stop for all ages at a reasonable price. We arranged for the Hands on History experience for an extra $12 and got to shoot the musket twice - totally worth the price. Our musket demonstrator was excellent - instructive and funny. Julia at the front desk was a huge help in making this a special visit for which I’m so grateful!
Awesome place to learn the histry. Kids love it. Breezy open ground to walk and let the kids run. Clean washrooms available. Super friendly service. Takes about an hour to look around. Beatiful place
It's a great recreation of a very historic fort. It has some amazing people around who are very informative, and are good to talk to. And I got deep flag envy, hence the photo"s
Nice spot, very nice presentation of firing muskets. Good spot to visit for about 1.5 hour time. Interesting to learn from employees of museum dressed in era's clothing. Nice staff of museum, and lovely service at the gift shop.
We went recently during the COVID restrictions so the indoor exhibits were closed. It was a little on the pricey side for what you currently receive. The grounds are beautiful and well taken care of with great views overlooking the Niagara River. The employees were friendly, inquisitive and forthcoming with information. We would like to go back another time when there is more to see. We stayed about an hour and a half. The musket demonstration was our favorite.
So much history and beautiful town
I know it says this is temporarily closed but we were still able to at least walk around the grounds and look at the outside of all the buildings. A great place for a walk around a historic site, even though the learning aspects of it are not open at the moment.
Worth a quick stop at this historic place, few blocks away from queen st at Niagara-on-the-lake. Parking is free before 10 am
An amazing and very beautiful site to visit. Had a good time with the family and learned lots of historical facts as well as saw many things that I learned in history class.
It was really interesting experience! We're already twice there. Beautiful nature, history stories good people around - what else do you need for happiness?
If you're a fan of military history then this may be for you. For me the exhibit displays could be more interactive but good enough for a short visit if you're in the area.
Great place of history in a beautiful area. Free to roam and people are there to tell you stories.
Great place for a change of pace and take in some history. All the staff were very articulate and could tell they care about preserving its heritage
Overall the staff that dresses to the era was fantastic and interacted by answering any questions and filling us in on all the details of every building. My only complaint is 6.00 for parking and no bills or debt only CC or coins.
I have been to several historic forts around Canada and this is one of my favorites. It wasn't busy at all when we went. The cafe and gift shop were amazing. They had amazing live demonstrations that happened frequently. (I usually end up missing them at other places). The entrance/visitor's center was very interesting. I found this was one of those sites that we didn't rush through and really took our time to enjoy.
This afternoon we attended the New Year’s Day levee at Navy Hall to welcome the first day of 2019. We were greeted by the Ft George Fife and drum unit of Fort George in full dress. We did a walk around this historic Fort with its various buildings and grounds. The out door skating rink, as shown in the photo was not in use due to the rains last night. You can check the Fort George web site for times the rink is available for skating. HAPPY NEW YEAR.
Highly recommend visiting. Especially as this year visits are free. Gives unique perspective of war of 1812. Also has one of the oldest buildings still standing in North America. Short hours 10-5, with musket demonstrations throughout the day
The site is excellent and undergoing a substantial facelift. We visited for an exterior walk around as the site was closed during the pandemic, and we knew that. We tried to pay for parking for the 15 minutes we knew we’d be there. But we could only pay for the full day, which seemed unfair. When we came back from our short walk about we had a $25 ticket from the Niagara-on-the-Lake parking authority. We specifically went to Niagara-on-the-Lake to help support local businesses and did this. So this ridiculous ticket, when there was only one other car in the huge parking area, spoiled our whole day. This is not the way to get tourists to come back.

Beautiful place to see history come to life. The live demonstration of old firearms was very unique.
The Canadian history is great. The volunteers that put on the demonstrations are very good and informative.
Came pretty much by accident. Nice place for a walk with some houses opened with little exhibitions inside. All staff members (period-clothed) were very attentive and provided entertaining comments. Nice short trip while visiting Niagara.
We had a great time at Fort George, it was better than I was expecting! Musket demonstrations, staff dressed up as in the 1800's, even "baking" real cookies in the kitchen! Lots of interesting information for kids and adults.
Great walking tour. Displays are fantastic. Reenactors are fabulous.
Only good if you know the history or have someone who does with you. Otherwise, as a visit, pretty dull. The park is great for a picnic though.
Fort George was a great place for the entire family....Parks Canada staff were amazing
What an amazing place to visit and get a better understanding of Canadian history. Self guide tours with a lot of wonderful people dressed in costume to explain what went on in the time. Highly highly highly recommend visiting
A well done, informative part of Parks Canada. Notably, tribute is paid to all the key partners in this formative piece of Canadian history.
Can't say enough about the re-created Fort George, a major military post in the War of 1812. It contains Ontario's oldest military structure (powder magazine), plus reproductions of the original blockhouses, officers' quarters, guard house, defensive walls, etc. The Fort has an excellent gift shop, and hosts a variety of events, year round.
Staff were very informative. I never knew I would enjoy a historical site so much. Bonus at the end was the gift shop.
Nice place for a quiet evening and a picnic. The hosts are very friendly and know a lot of historical knick-knacks. This is a lovely detour on the way to the falls.
Well-maintained. Beautiful. A timely reminder of the sacrifices the military have made to keep us safe. Open spaces for kids to run around. Muskets firing. Great guy in the mess hall. Great gal in the soldiers' sleeping quarters.
