Really cool

Easy short walk from the parking area. Excellent place to look at icebergs during spring to early summer. You can also get close to the light house and outer gun battery which was used during the war.

Chris Kiff

Nice views, off the beaten path but not hard to get to from downtown. Most of the areas were closed off due to covid but not sure why as they are just outdoor pathways.

Perfect place for a photoshoot and chill with close friends.

Some nice ruins around the lighthouse. A neat little lighthouse and the trail that starts nearby leads up the steep hill to a perfect pool of water

Beautiful scenery, but no parking on site. Parking IS available about 500 meters before the entrance. Great spot for photos and if you're lucky a whale or maybe even an ice berg.

One of those hidden not so hidden spots in St.. John's.. beautiful views of the ocean and city.

Whether you're here for the tourism of the fort Amherst lighthouse or the hike of the trail, you will not be disappointed. You can start here (Southside road entrance), and continue onto the ECT; hit up some swimming holes along the way, pick some berries (depending on the season); and see both Cabot Tower and Cape Spear in one of the most beautiful perspectives! Make your way right on through freshwater, cape spear, Maddox cove, petty harbor..etc....

Stef Budai

Beautiful vista, hike up the East Coast Trail for great views, just down the street.

Cute lil lighthouse with picnic table by the ocean. The old cannons are worth a visit but be careful as it is very worn down.

Iconic place to see in Newfoundland too bad it's in a condition of disrepair. Often in spring it's a great place to view icebergs!

It wasn't much to see. I would recommend Signal Hill instead where you can see the Cabot Tower and get a better view of both Fort Amherst and St. John´s.

(Translated) the East Coast Trail is a splendid trail, maintained by volunteers, the landscapes are fantastic, you just have to be lucky to have good weather. Beautiful view when the weather cooperates, also some neat ruins from WWII. This location is right along the entrance to the harbour as well and is a great location to watch ships enter and leave.

If you've never been here, definitely stop by and take a look. Unfortunately you cannot get down to the cannons any more because it has been fenced off for safety. It's a quick little 30-60 minute trip close to downtown that doesn't cost anything. **Note**You have to park about a 10 minute walk away. If you have mobility issues, it will take a bit longer. Also, there are steep cliffs. If you have toddlers, do not let them wander. The views are spectacular. Also very close to the beginning of several hiking trails on the East Coast Trail system.

Favorite spot in the city, the ruins are ruins and that means they're in disrepair. Slowly deteriorating into rebar and dust maybe asbestos lol I don't know. But it would be less cool if it had touristy signs everywhere with a gift shop. Inside the fence you can see the old tracks that the batteries swiveled on. But the fence is barely ever replaced now so you can just get inside the structures below with ease and very little caution. Ive never heard of anyone being kicked out let alone ticketed and haven't seen a no trespassing sign.

Amazing place for a hike. Parking is available 500m down the road, and things are currently closed for COVID, so it’s hard to access the main area of the lighthouse with the bunker.

Connor McBrine-Ellis

Really cool fort located opposite Signal Hill, with great views of those cliffs! Definitely in disrepair however it's great fun to explore. I didn't tell you this, but you can easily hop the fence and go into the ruins yourself. Most of the time the fence is broken anyway so go ahead and check it out. Salt is caked onto the sides of most of the buildings, and lots of people graffiti them.

Navjot Pal

Andrew Lawlin

Pretty neat place! Great to watch the ships come in without having to do the hike from signal hill. My only thing is there isn’t much to do, it feels very closed off and just gated. All the WW2 stuff you can’t even get close too unless you go though the broken gate which I saw some you get people doing. But it’s fairly nice none the less

Luis Fonseca

View the Battery and St-Johns Bay area. Use the parking lot and walk.

Well worth a night-time visit when in st John's so as to see the signal hill from another vantage (the signal 'hill' looks like a black abyss with the illuminated structure hovering above). You can visit in 5 minutes and it's kinda neat.

Even after 30 years of living here in St. John's, I never tire of the views of Signal Hill from nearby Fort Amherst and the surrounding area, at any time of year and in any weather. As one roadside interpretation plaque on the Bonavista Peninsula put it, hope for bad weather, because the coast line becomes that much more dramatic. It's a pity, though, that there is no longer a tea room next to Fort Amherst as there used to be.

I like this light house, I generally like all lighthouses, Personally its it's something to do with the historically tragic nature of a light house, the men of relied on them and those that were failed by it. but this one is special, built on top of a old abondend military complex, it likely has a profound history that should be told. Unfortunately the military complex is fenced off completely. I would have been happy to pay a few dollars to tour the site, such a wasted opportunity

Located on the other side of the Harbour opening opposing Cape Spear. A nice little walk down this road leads to some pretty nice views. Though, I'll admit there's quite the plethora of garbage down in the actual fort ???? C'mon people..

Carmen T

Drive up as far as you can until it says this is the last opportunity you can park then walk up towards the lighthouse. The walk up is somewhat of a hike but it honestly doesn't take too long and it is uphill but it will be worth it. On the way up, you will already have great views and can see Cabot tower on the other side. Once you are at the lighthouse, walk around and enjoy the scenery.

A definite historical landmark to check out when in the area!

Great place to visit view is fantastic and is free to see so please be mindful people do reside along the path to the Lighthouse so obey signage and please don't litter. KEEP IT BEAUTIFUL FOR EVERYONE TO SEE

Paul Brown

What a great place to start a hike on the east coast trail or to watch boats coming and going into St. John’s harbour. You can also spot whales and icebergs in season. Watch and listen to the noon day canon as it fires atop Signal Hill or look out across the Atlantic towards Cape Spear, the most easterly point in North America. Definitely worth the visit if you are in St. John’s.

It's a little walk to get to the fort. You have to park in a little section and walk through the residential zone. The lighthouse is locked up and there is a fence around the fort but there are big holes in the fence everyone goes through to go into the fort. Cool graffiti to check out. Just please respect the fort and everyone else who would like to see it and take your garage with you and not destroy anything!!

Iconic place and like other areas in NFLD, the scenery is worth the trip. It's neat to see some of the old stations, but there really isn't too much to do. It's not as grand as Signal Hill, but is still worth checking out if you're there in the area. Always wear a little extra as the ocean winds do make it a little cooler than when more inland.
