We have the opinions of people who used the services of Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology (Tourist Attraction) near Hamilton (Canada).
To this day this business receives a rating of 4.6 out of 5 and the rating was based on 127 reviews.
You must have seen that its rating is virtually the highest, and it's founded on a large number of feddbacks, so we may think that the rating is quite reliable. If people have bothered to give their score when they've done well with the business, it works.
As you know, we do not usually bother to put tatings when they are correct and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Tourist Attraction belongs to the category of Museum.
Great venue. Great staff. Great events.
Great place to visit and learn all about our history, as well as get some chance for interaction, and summer train rides!
Such a cool place
puff puff i love this place i have been here many times.
Beautiful place to rent, feels very secluded yet so close to the city, not mention right off the highway. Great for people out of town. Hope to get a chance to go back.
I've visited this location, but not for the museum, rather a gift show was running instead. I can't comment on the tour or museum info, but the buildings are interesting and I did see some information about the history of the location. I'll have to check out the museum/tour in the future and add another review at that time.
We had our son's first birthday here for a great price. The museum is beautiful and the staff is very friendly
The staff are friendly and take customer service to a whole new level of excellence. To think that this 200+ year old site could still function today is amazing. This is a great value for your price as a day trip.
"Coal" place to learn about the history of the water works of Hamilton. Good to blow off steam ^_^
One of the best gems of the city. We had an incredibly knowledgeable tour guide, she was amazing! We got to see the flywheel / walking beam move which was a real treat. If you love seeing how things work, you'll love this museum. As an engineer, yes the tour was simplified but my technical questions were answered well and i had a great time. Admission price was well worth it.
Amazing, must see
We used their woodshed venue and it was so perfect. Loved it. I'd def recommend
Fascinating snapshot of Hamilton and Technology's past. Well worth the visit.
Great staff
Learned alot about firs technology.
This is a must-see! The name may be little misleading, but consider it a museum of one incredible thing: a pair of 70-ton steam-powered walking beam pumping engines built into a cathedral-like Victorian building. And it is in pristine condition, and still works. Apparently, this is the oldest surviving example of its kind in North America. Even if you don't think you are interested in this type of thing, think again and go have a look. It only takes about 90 minutes. Our tour guide was Nancy, and she was full of knowledge, exuberant, and most excellent. The tour started in the wood shed, where we viewed a scale model of the pumping station. A short while later, you are literally inside that model. Except it's the real thing. Go see it, you won't regret it!
Great staff excellent information and engaging activities for families and school groups
Great place to bring the kids. Train ride was loved by everyone young and old.
It's a pretty small museum, so don't come expecting anything too grand. Given that, though, it's well managed and maintained, and offers a glimpse into Hamilton history. We came for the steamer day, and my preschooler got a kick out of riding the miniature train.
Not a big museum, but worth visiting for adults and kids.
Really nice place for adults and children alike. See how a 70-ton steam pump works in slow motion.
Helpful staff .
Loved it all the exhibits were fantastic. Loved going on the train rides .
Interesting small place but a bit pricey for a short tour.
Amazing historical tour of a great representation of engineering in the 1800's. Tour guide was well educated and very nice.
Excellent resource for understanding the history and technology of early Hamilton. The tour guide was informed and thoughtful.
Awesome tour for a really good price, staff 100% know what their talking about and are extremley friendly. 10/10 would recommend this to all age groups and an awesome place to stop in and learn about Victorian steam water pumps.
Husband, step mom and I brought my almost 4 year old son for the train ride and museum.. it was so fun! Everyone there was super nice and helpful outside and at the train station.. however the man inside sharing the history and giving demonstrations of the steam trains wasn’t so nice/friendly, when asked a question he would ignore and when asked again he gave an irritated short answer that really left more questions than anything.. try being a bit more chipper/positive…. informative booklets for the history! 8/10 would recommend still as it was a fun little ride and the conductors were extremely nice and even offered to take a picture of us on the train! Very kind man!
Very interesting
The biggest engine I ever seen in my life is inside this building built way back in the 1800s
Had so much fun on Live Steamer Days'. It was awesome.
Hamilton history, great staff and an interesting look at the older tech.
Beautiful museum for family outing and the live steam train track out back is great. Run by passionate volunteers who put on amazing events for families.
Was an extremely educational and entertaining experience! One of Hamilton's hidden gems, if you're visiting the city and have an interest in mechanics, engineering and waterworks, or just looking for something different and cool for the family, definitely check it out!
Rented for a baby shower, was a great space with option of Indoor and outdoor seating. Has 4 washrooms and a kitchenette available.
Interesting museum with the machinery and mechanism but there wasn't a detailed tour of the place other than reading the simple pamphlet. Would love to see a resemblence/model of how the machinery actually works back in the day
Nice experience with my family????
Great place to visit with small children when they have their train ride.
Friendly staff, great museum! Would be a wonderful place to take kids
Nice place
Excellent place to visit
Great place
The original 1859 Hamilton, Ontario water pumping station, complete with the two original steam pumps. Friendly guide Philip gave me a private tour.
A great place to take the kids for an educational and fun experience.
This National Historic Site of Canada built in 1860 is a very unique part of Hamilton's history with connections to Nikola Tesla and his alternating current and and electric vehicle related technologies. A nice place for events like the Nikola Tesla Electric City Festival where the famous inventor's various inventions are showcased.
This is the most awesome museum I've ever been to. The tour was fantastic, and the steam engine itself was incredible! The building was built in 1856 in a Tuscan architectural style befitting it's important place in civic society. The architecture, with it's large windows, is stunning, and the machine itself is beautiful, full of brass, polished wood, and iron. You can look at all the details of the machine, which is incredibly fascinating. And the guide is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable. Definitely the best thing we saw on our trip across Canada.
This place was amazing. The staff were so accommodating because I got there a little close to closing time. I got my tour anyway and it was the coolest thing! I’m definitely going to be going back! The tour guide Scott was extremely well-versed in all of his information and I didn’t just get history about the museum of steam but I got a history about Hamilton as well. This is a must to take your kids to place and the month of December is going to have all kinds of things to do over the Christmas holidays for your kids! The other thing that I learned from being there today is if you have a Hamilton library card admission is free. This is an amazing thing and is for all civic museums in Hamilton.
I was thorn between 3/4stars but after much deliberation and elimination :) I came to a conclusion that they deserve 4stars...Overall, my son loooved the experience. The trains, history, the art, lovely!
Must see museum in Hamilton
Very informative, train rides were fun and excellent mini maker faire
Something about this place is so comforting. Love Hamilton and all the unique thing to find.
Had a great day with the kids
Very good tour and explanation of late 19th century engineering and why they built it with the need to provide fresh drinking water
It's interesting enough but not worth paying to get in, that's just my opinion though, we went on doors open Hamilton and while I enjoyed it, it was also free and there wasnt a whole lot to do or see, maybe it would be better on a less crowded day so I'll say that if you really like history, dont take my review as a bad thing, you may really enjoy it, but for me it was just ok, also no bagels so dont go there hungry. I'm going to change my rating from 3 to 5 stars because while I still feel the same about my trip there, I have since found a new appreciation for it. For anyone who are fans of the show "Murdoch Mysteries", you will surely get a kick out of visiting this area and seeing areas around it you'll recognize from the show.
Amazing to see how it all started and the transformation. Soon we'll have the cleanest water around.
We didn't do much of the museum because my son was too busy having an absolute blast riding the trains!
To be frank there is not much here but what there is is very interesting both from an historical perspective and a technological one.
Amazing hugevdisplay of steam technology and it still runs.
It was great very informative. Personal tour, affordable, great for families
Had a great time there last Sat. Renee did a wonderful job explaining to adults as well as interacting with kids. Fanscinating to see the flying wheel in action.
Very informative
its a part of hamiltons history. also good for pokestops
Very interesting place for kids!
Every year they hold the Maker Faire which is free. They do take donations throughout the event so it can remain free so any child can go. The cost of food and drinks was really cheap and hosted by Jack Asters. They had so many children's stations to make their own toys and play with them. Most booths were interactive even if they were showing something like a model train station made entirely of Lego. They also had an ice cream food truck and access to the museum for free with one part having a liaison. Very enjoyable day!
It was an amazing learning experience. My 8-year-old enjoyed it immensely. As we pulled out of the parking lot he was already asking to return.
Very interesting pieces from the past, upgraded facility, friendly knowledgeable guides.
Really neat museum. My boyfriend and I showed up to tour the museum and there was a tonne of kids. So the nice lady from the office took us on kind of a custom tour of the museum to avoid the kiddos as best as possible. I'm terrible with names - but you are amazing! And I had a blast ^_^ thanks for making my birthday better!!
Awesome place to have a nice family times enjoying the mini train rides.
We're new to Hamilton so it was a great way to get to know a bit more about our new home. (Loved that we could even find our street on the old map of the city's waterworks.) The space and machinery was beautifully restored. Amazing to think that this place once supplied the whole city with water.
What a treasure! History so clear and relevant to what matters most: fresh, accessible, heathful water. The guide spoke so enthusiastically, reading her 'audience ' ( 3 little ones and Grandma) as she demonstrated the power of water and the might of steam in a building that echoes the lives of workers as young as 8 years old. I like the appeal to younger ones and the details of fascination to older visitors. At a time when we hear the importance of getting away from the poison of coal fired power and heat, we see vividly what those fires initially provided for the city and its citizens. Later in the afternoon, elsewhere, I met a woman who said she'd been to a catered shower there in the wood building. Such a jewel! I'll return with the little ones. I saw the wide-eyed wonder on their faces!!
Historical place. Museum made of an old steam engine factory.
Fascinating steam powered water works, great tour
Funtastic interpreters. Wonderful steam engine. Truly amazing living museum.
Come here as a tour with City of Hamilton special event today. Good place to visit in Hamilton. This event as part of commemorations for Hamilton 175, tour through Hamilton heritage sites Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology on October 21 and Dundurn Castle on October 22 with special guest guide Mayor Eisenberger.
great
A great way to spend a couple of hours. Tour guide was excellent.
It was sad...the train rides are closed till may next year.
Best tour ever
Great place for school visits.
The model trains.
It was nice, small and not as accessible to people in wheelchairs but overall a lot of good information and the staff was friendly and helpful
Great place for family
Nest and unique history
Visited during doors open. Tour was very interesting and informative.
My girlfriend and I came to visit. There were a ton of kids there for a school trip. The wonderful girl there took us on a tour herself. I can't remember her name, but she is extremely nice and knowledgeable. Made my girlfriend's birthday amazing.
Visited this facility today 4 May, 2019. Was amazed at the efforts that dedicated residents of Hamilton have made to ensure that the population gets clean drinking water. The staff that took us on the guided tour of the museum & the water treatment facility were very eloquent & had all the facts at their fingertips. Thank you very much for hosting us.
Impressive
Less than an hour of museum content. Try to visit when the engine is scheduled to run.
I went during doors open Hamilton. The museum is small but very interesting.
Have taken the kids here a couple of times for some of the free events. Fun to ride the trains when they are running. There are always good educational displays and interactive events to keep young minds engaged.
What you learn here is another example of why Hamilton is great.
Awesome! Staff is wonderful and gives a great tour.
Wonderful place for Winter market. Fascinating seeing the pump running.Great tour guide explaining how it used to work.
great historical story.
Very interesting
A really enjoyable vist!
A great place to bring your school aged kids. My daughter enjoyed the tour and learned a lot!
Great machinery, unfortunately not operating.
Nice place to learn about the past history of how water was pumped for Hamilton. The train rides were super cute for the kids - not sure if they have this all year round or if it was just for the event we went too.
Awesome. Havent seen it work yet but the tour was spectacular
A piece of history you need to see. We spoke to the curator who spoke about workings of the pump house as though he there in the 1800's. Extremely informative and great personality. Even if you live in Hamilton it's a must see.
I visited when they had the Tesla Festival! They had actual Tesla cars and sat in one for the first time ever! The place had multiple buildings to go through and learn. It was a very cool visit and would go again!
We went for a guided tour today. My 12 to and I loved it. Our tour guide did an amazing job answering my son's many questions and his vast knowledge and love of the site made for a wonderful afternoon.
Very friendly staff will gladly show you how steam engineering benefited the City of Hamilton and how it works. They are very knowledgeable too. They have a great place for kids to play too. Great little museum.
Amazing display. The rideable trains were just a dream to experience!!!
Held a small event in the Woodshed, it was amazing! Great intimate venue, super friendly helpful staff. Highly recommend it!
Beautiful little gem. Very cool museum and great for photos.
Great historic site to visit
Fascinating Museum.
Fun, surprising find. A great way to spend an hour or so. Interesting history and science and a beautiful building.
WaterWorks History Abounds
Excellent place, lots of science made easy to understand here. Well worth a visit
Amazing location. Came here for a friend's wedding and everywhere you turn is a photo opportunity. Very unique spaces, and the staff are super helpful.
Went for family day. Was very cool to see all the trains. Our kids loved it.
Very interesting, hands on experience.
Part of our past, we'll presented and preserved for future generations to enjoy.
Not a huge museum, but a beautiful presentation of an important part of Hamilton's history. Loved our visit here.
Love the miniature trains and boats. My kids loved the experience!
Really knowledgable friendly staff
What a very cool place. Beautiful steam pump with amazing architecture. And to our hosts, Drew and Rene- thank you so much for your hospitality and knowledge. It was a treat to get a private tour today. Thank you. We will be back!
Very informative tour, beautiful building and machinery.
sweet pieces of history, but should add more for the price people pay to enter.
This was a lot of fun. Lots of things for kids. Adults would find this equally exciting. The staff were very knowledgeable about the engines and took their time explaining. Lots to learn!
Interesting place but very tiny.
Fascinating history, can't wait to be there for one of the live steam events!
My kids loved it. thanks for great tour
The cogs are running smoothly and the pipes where shiny and everything was oily.
Nice little museum to visit in Hamilton. Facility was clean and information was abundant. Staff was nice. The model train ride was fun. It's worth visiting during DoorsOpen.
Great spot
Absolutely love the Tesla Electric festival this year. Our children were greeted at the entrance where they all received school supplies. The event tents kept everyone interested (adults included) and wanting to participate. Food was available and smelt delicious but unfortunately we had eaten prior and did not get to taste it. We ended the day with the train ride. The line up was a little long but the wait was not too bad because it moved fast.
Great guide gave a great tour wasn't too long very appropriate for the building and our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging.
Fun afternoon for the little guy who's into trains right now
We watched the model boats here. My kids loved it! Visiting the museum is always a nice treat. And of course, the trains are awesome!!
Loved the raid with the "mini"- train
Good
Quickly popped into the museum during a March Break event. There were some lovely volunteers working and lots of activities for children. If you're in the area, at least stop by for some photos of the exterior. It's a beautiful building!
Renee gave us a tour and she was my absolute favorite person. She kept it fun and interesting and at a nice pace. Very clear and knowledgeable and just an absolute delight. We learned a lot, like this pumphouse is the only one left in all of north America that is anywhere near as complete as it was in it's hayday. 97% this one is!! I highly recommend a visit to this museum!
I went here with my daughter and classmates for a field trip. Very interesting museum and worth a visit.
Nice tour...thanks Hamilton for maintaining history
I had a great time here with my daughter today for the Nikola Tesla festival. The actual exhibits were quaint, quick and interesting. Everyone was very pleasant and though it is quite short (we did it within 20 min) it had some degree of interactivity. If you're not expecting the Science Centre or the ROM then you'll enjoy yourself. My daughter thought the train ride was the best part, and I can't honestly argue against her. The old timey feel was pretty fun and riding around on a tiny locomotive over miniature tracks was more enjoyable than it looks.
My son look forward to see the mini train. But we haven’t seen any. And it was so brief, we didn’t have any fun there. We wasted quite a few money for almost nothing!
Small museum but very well kept by the city. Tour guide was excellent in explaining both the science and significance of pump house
If you like history or engines this is the place to come!
Excellent tour guide and history of Hamilton. Very eye opening. Definitely worth the $7 entry fee. I recommend it to all ages.
Friendly knowledgeable staff ready to answer your questions. Informative tour that is really interesting for everyone.
Grandkids loved the activities!
The giant steam engines are incredible and the lady explaining them was very knowledgeable. These were the only technology examples on display so it was a little disappointing.
The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and highlighted the talk with personal stories of the real people who lived and worked there when it was first built. It was very interesting.
Learned alot here
Too close to water treatment plant... It really stinks
Good for little kids
It is a nice place to learn how things work in the old days
Amazing buildings from 150 years ago mini railway
- great leanring oppurtunity for kids n adults - clean - friendly staff
Science day today. Free and fun. Lots to keep kids busy.
Have been here many times and would recommend it to anyone who would enjoy a look at how Hamilton was like around 150 years ago. Friendly knowledgeable staff ready to answer your questions. Informative tour that is really interesting for everyone. Our grandson was even allowed to 'bar' the engine, for those who don't know what that is there is a great reason to go, the staff would be more than happy to explain what that means. They also have special event days which can be found on their website. We found the museum to be a lot of fun and a Hamilton treasure that we can all be proud of.
Went for the science fair and saw the Steam Museum at the same time was a good day out with go again
Intimate tour, knowledgeable staff that are patient and excellent at answering questions. Very interesting piece of local history.
Wonderful interesting friendly
The steam train ride was fun!
So pretty!
A great museum with a wonderful staff!
A great guided tour. Much appreciated the blend of history and engineering. A very well-preserved site.
Tour was great! Very interactive.
Great place to visit. Peter was a fantastic tour guide!
Excellent food. Can be a little on the slow side however. Northern Indian, Nepalese cuisine.
The tour guide, Phillip, is enthusiastic and very passionate. He makes the history of this ancient water works municipal building and the equipment fascinating and interesting. Worth a stop if you have the time to focus and imagine what it might have been like to design, build and maintain this remarkable all in one steam engine/building from over 150 years ago... cool !
Shower there fantastic
Interesting bit of local history. Also liked the photo exhibit of undeveloped city plans (e.g. proposed projects vs what was actually built at a location). Hopefully the wheel is in fixed soon because it would be very cool to see it operational.
So much fun for the whole family. Loved this place as a kid and love taking my kids there now.
Great place to bring your kids, so much to learn and hands on!
We thoroughly enjoyed our tour with guide Phillip. This was a steam powered pumping station that supplied water to Hamilton in the late nineteenth century. It was state of the art for its time. If you are interested in history and steam technology you will find this interesting. On certain days in the summer the coal burning steam powered miniature trains are available for kids to ride.
Magnificent to tour! So much cast iron and brass and masonry! The leading technology of the period.
Great private tour
The Hamilton museum of steam is located at the water treatment facility of Hamilton. The museum tells the story of how water from lake Ontario enters the water treatment plant be how in the late 1800's water was pumped up the mountain with the massive steam engines. A fantastic heritage and historical site showing the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the late 1800's. There is a model railway where kids and adults can ride. A must visit for lovers of steam engine enthusiasts. Entrance was free. Guided tours were available. Donations are always welcome.
Great experience for the grandchildren.
Good place to enjoy one or two hours. Kids will love the train rides on electric and steam powered engines. Worth seeing the old steam pump inside the old building.
Excellent!!!
Great place for kids. Phil is an incredible tour guide. Very professional and knowledgeable Definitely coming back
Nice place
a big thank you to Philip who showed us around today! i took 4 kids 3yrs and under and they had a great time and were very happy. the building is beautiful and the history is so important. thanks again!
Nice museum and trains out back
Small but informative museum.
You learn alot on the tour.
Very interesting place
Had the undiluted pleasure of visiting this museum. The only thing better than the fabulous machines and gorgeous architecture was the guide. To my shame, I have forgotten his name, but his knowledge, irreverent tone and engaging manner made this an amazing tour. Well worth the visit!
We loved it!
It is very short, not to mention the money we paid(20 dollars!). And it is tiny, we don’t know why everyone says it is great because in the blink of an eye, the tour ended and there is nothing to do. We certainly did not enjoy it at all.
Fascinating!
Amazing experience
Wonderful day at the museum! The architecture and history of the buildings is interesting. Reading about the work life of those who worked in the pump house, and then seeing the big machines was awesome. Also took in mini train ride which was fun for kids and adults alike. Warning for those with physical limitations, there are many stairs and not all have railings.
Bridal shower friendly if you don't want a big kitchen, otherwise great.
Always a fun place to visit, and the events they have sometimes such as the Thomas the Tank Engine show and Harry Potter Triva are very entertaining
Lots of history!
Murdoch Mysteries Were Short Here Historical Building.
Well what can we say about this FREE visit to this steam museum? Only one thing AWESOME!! AMAZING!! Honestly, we didn't know what to expect from this. We were told by friends and family it would be too boring for our 6yr grandson. But it was the exact opposite. He was intrigued and genuinely interested in the details of history Renee shared with our tour group. Get a library card and go visit the steam museum because it is worth saving money just listen to Renee spreading her knowledge and engaging adults and children of all ages! My grandson loved every minute of it!! Thank you Renee for doing a great and memorable job!
I had my wedding here this past weekend, it was absolutely amazing! The venue turned out beautifully, and the staff were all so helpful when we needed assistance/questions. Very cool spot to take the family too!
I really enjoyed our tour. Such a cool place and such a beautiful old building.
My kids (4 and 6) were a bit young for the tour, but still got through it and enjoyed the info. The best bit though is visiting when the railway ride on is running out the back. My 4 year old lives for this! It's free and run by volunteers (donations welcome). It is set up like a real little train station. Brilliant fun for young and old train enthusiasts.
Super place
Small venue for an event
Really interesting history. The tour guide knew his material and presented in a way that kept your attention.
This place is the coolest place for an engineering geek.
A very good place to see and take the family or a date.
Good place to take the kids. For about 1 hour to 2 hours of fun
Fantastic experience. The tour guide made the experience fun and interesting.
it was fun...look at thier calender on thier website for next Sept event.
Went to the museum for the first time for my nephews birthday and we enjoyed it thru and thru .... it's a great place to host an event. Looking forward to the next event
The free train rides today were very much enjoyed by our little guy ????
Interesting look into part of the history of Hamilton and Sarah was very entertaining.
A great place to visit and to learn a little history about Hamilton
A historoic and very interesting museum.
Very interesting! You are bound to learn a great deal from the very Friendly staff!!
Steam Punk! Really awesome for kids, and there's a donation train ride. Really fun.
They have guide tour which is worth to do. Informative and friendly staff.
Worth a visit
Train rides for children (and parents!), and tours of the historical steam pump that once provided water to the whole city. On some days, there are other special events as well.
Not at all what I expected! Very informative and a lot of interesting facts about Hamilton's history. You get free entry if you have a library card
Had our wedding photos here, didnt go inside but the outside is beautiful!!
Great place to take kids and see how technology solved problems nearly two centuries ago. Try to go when the Golden Horseshoe Steamers are active for a special kid treat.
I found his place very much interesting, the tour guide really made it fun and pleasant...
Fascinating history and well preserved
Everyone there was super nice and helpful outside and at the train station.
Great place for kids and adults, the trains are awesome
Very cool inexpensive tour
Good learning experience for everyone. All about Hamilton.
I was really impressed with the place and wish I had gone their 40-50 years ago!!! It was totally fascinating! Our tour guide was awesome, and her knowledge was astounding. They tailor their talks to the age-group they are speaking to, but certainly make it come alive. There are hands-on teaching tools that really help you understand both the history and mechanization before you go into rest of the museum. My kids are grown up now, but I can't wait to take them there! Just amazing!
As an example of 19th century technology and architecture this installation is remarkable. They have preserved the machinery well and the building is well maintained. As an experience it is totally underwhelming. Renee had obviously given this tour before and told us so. She seemed not to differentiate her audience between the engineering aficionados and 5-year-olds accompanying their parents. As a result we were both bored. Having worked in tourism I can appreciate how difficult it can be to make a tour exciting even after the 30,000th iteration. That is the challenge. Rise to the occasion. Revamping the show would help too. A little sound and light would help.
I really don't like it at all because it's a total waste of time and money, and it is too small and barely has anything to see. And it cost 20 dollars for two adults and a child.
We’ve enjoyed our guided tour very much. It was very educational. According to our lovely guide, this museum is unique because the steam engines are believed to be the oldest surviving of their kind both in Canada and USA. Make sure to book a tour online before coming, because quite often, it is sold out. They also have a small gift shop, outdoor family scavenger hunt and lots of free information leaflets.
Fun for the whole family
This small museum was so much more fascinating than I thought it would be. The pump house has been beautifully preserved. Definitely worth seeing, this is the last pump house of its kind in all of North America.
