Interesting local history

Brian Macdonald

A great local museum that tells the story of New Brunswick from our first nation, through Acadia and Loyalists, through the War of 1812, and the first World War, to the modern day!

It's a funky, oddball little museum and therefore I recommend it. As a tourist I found there was a lot of depth, but not always enough broad context. I felt like I was being shown the trees but couldn't see the forest. Some of the text and videos were overly long unless you're a local who's going to return often. And though I'm sure it takes a lot of time and hours to compile labels for all the artefacts, it seemed strange to have a label for a bucket, but not for a buckskin dress. (Was it Mi'kmaw? I was curious to know more about it.) BUT. There was also a spectacularly kooky exhibit about a Roswell investigator, and a funny room about a frog, and little frogs hidden throughout--and again, a lot of depth. So though not as coherent as the larger museums I've been to in my life, it's damn entertaining for $6 and definitely memorable. I think students, friends, families would all find something to amuse.

Lovely facilities, well managed but still has this weird oily smell on the grounds around it. Edit: Being fair to FRM, this review was posted then. I believe that's been dissipated now.

A nice museum with a good historic (and prehistoric) overview of Fredericton. The building is beautiful, but it is a self - guided tour. You are given a guide, but for the cost, I would prefer a guide to be available, even just wondering guides for if you have question. Other than a few focused exhibits, like the giant frog, it is very general, but informative. A good first place to visit in Fredericton.

Nice grounds to relax in. Near the waterfront so the breeze was a welcome for a hot, summer day. There are washroom facilities inside the building once you pay. As I entered the building, there was a strong musty smell. Visitors take a self guided tour. The handout was very helpful and easy to follow. Very good, varied informative exhibits. I am glad I spent the time to read through most of the exhibits. I wasn't there for any special activities but still enjoyed my visit. I saw some people setting up for a show, but didn't stay for it. Wanted to give four stars but it was musty, wish is typical of older buildings.

Beautiful museum, full of history, I visited it during November although its not quite the season, but still I enjoyed the visit so much I spent almost 2 hours really lost track of time. I loved the virtual reality and the simulation of the characters. Its really fun.

It is a very nice place to visit in the summer. Some enjoy a picnic in the park while many tourists come to see the changing of the guard. This happens mostly during the summer season and is interesting to watch. They also have summer movies outdoors here at night and the Calithumpians and other acts as well. On Thursday evenings we also have the cultural market there as well. They always have amazing food trucks and arts and crafts to buy.

This is a real gem with some really cool artifacts including a demonstration “real life trench”. Staff person was very informative and went out of his way to offer additional information and enrich our experience. He was obviously passionate about this museum and it appeared that continued work was being done to create new and improved displays.
